From my son:

I wrote this today, in response to a bunch of people who were bitter and belligerent about the election. Thought you might enjoy it.

"We must always look forward as a people, and recognize the progress we have made along the way. Americans should take pride in the historic nature of this new Presidency, and we should all show our support for the office of the President, regardless of politics and previous rhetoric.

I am skeptical of any claims made by politicians of both political parties, and experience places this perennial "spirit of unity" on a razor's edge. In Washington, power is always in season as new alliances are formed and old unions dissolve. As much as we may desire change in Washington, there is no escaping the inherent positioning of every word and phrase. Politics is politics; there is no changing tautological truth.

But for America, it is time for us to return to our daily lives. It is time for rest, for resolve, for release. It is time for us to put down our signs and bring out our hearts.

For those who supported Obama, enjoy this moment, but understand that your brothers and sisters lost, are in pain, and cannot enjoy this moment as you. You need to help them see this moment as the triumph it is, not with the political rhetoric of the past, but with the common human connection that unites us all.

For those who supported McCain, don't let this loss overwhelm or define you. Realize that the ideas that unite us as ideological brethren are stronger than any one election, and that it is now time for transition and transformation, reflection and respect.

Democracy works to stabilize government via constant political turmoil and internal revolution. The winds have changed, but the landscape is the same. This is America. We are America. And it is a new day.

'Sun
Take some time, get away
Sun
Suicide is a shame
Sun
Soon, you'll find your own way
Sun
Hope has come, you are safe
And it makes me cry
Because I'm on my way

Hey, it's the sun, and it makes me shine…'"

On a more positive note, I filled my tank for $2.79/gal (midgrade) yesterday. Although higher than most of the country, that's almost two dollars cheaper than what I paid at the early summer peak, and according to Gas Buddy, the cheapest since January 2006. I never thought I'd see prices below $3/gal again.

The one good thing that will come from an Obama presidency is that he will take all of the cronies from our state, paving the way for REAL change and LEADERSHIP in Illinois!

POST ELECTION 2008
November 6, 2008

I guess now that the election is over and I have had time to reflect I can finally write a new post. I have been at work since so I needed some breathing room. First of all My previous posts were meant to reflect my feelings immediately after the election. The Doors video is appropriate to convey the way I felt that night. Morose. No one does that better than the Doors. (Pink Floyd can come close sometimes). The other video is meant to reflect my opinion of where the country is now headed. We will see.

Unlike democrats I am not going to engage in sour grape attacks on America’s new President. Barack Obama is the President-Elect of the United States of America. I will not work to UNDERMINE him for political gain no matter how much I disagree with his policies. I will not work to SILENCE opposition to him. I love my country too much for that.

I will however GIVE NO QUARTER when I believe his POLICIES or ACTIONS are detrimental to this country or it’s citizens as a whole. I will be savage in my criticism of any attempts to violate or eliminate rights guaranteed by our our Constitution. I will DEFEND the principles of Conservatism at every turn.

After a day & a half of gloom, the sun is coming out.

It's been unbearably sunny here. Just when I wanted to keep on sulking and sobbing and whining and whinging, I would drive past a line of trees where the sun lit up the multi-hued leaves and lift my spirits and heart. Then, I'd think of CBBHO again and go back to being in the pits. But, until I can make it, I'm gonna' fake it.

I agree with Krauthammer on this one. We found the painpoint on gas. It's $4.00. We need to keep near there and bank the difference to fuel (sorry) expansion into other sources and/or technologies. Incredibly cheap fuel has been like crack cocaine making us addicted to foreign oil.

Let me add a feel good quote for all to ponder…

“I feel like we got a righteous wind at our backs here, but we’re going to have to work. We’re going to have to struggle. We’re going to have to fight.” Barack Obama 2008

“The ill wind of opportunism is falling, the righteous wind of Socialism is on the rise. By the end of this year the victory of socialism will be greatly assured. Naturally there will be many struggle ahead and we must struggle hard.” Chairman Mao

Obama, McCain Campaigns Both Hacked, Files Compromised

"As the election ends, news is coming out from both campaigns on what happened behind closed doors. During the summer, the Obama campaign had their systems hacked, but so did McCain — and not by each other, but bya third party. '... both the FBI and the Secret Service came to the campaign with an ominous warning: "You have a problem way bigger than what you understand," an agent told Obama's team. "You have been compromised, and a serious amount of files have been loaded off your system." The following day, Obama campaign chief David Plouffe heard from White House chief of staff Josh Bolten, to the same effect: "You have a real problem ... and you have to deal with it." The Feds told Obama's aides in late August that the McCain campaign's computer system had been similarly compromised.'"

"Officials at the FBI and the White House told the Obama campaign that they believed a foreign entity or organization sought to gather information on the evolution of both camps' policy positions — information that might be useful in negotiations with a future administration."

Ladies and gents, I'd like to award the "Most Dramatic Leftie" award to "Daniel DeRito" of the Daily Kos. I guess his piece was supposed to be serious, but the language was enormously dramatic. A few excerpts:

"Like an unhealed wound, the announcement that Amendment Two was projected to pass tore it open and left me in anguish, alone on the floor...bleeding tears. How could it be that I'd found myself again at that oh so familiar juncture...lulled into a sense of safety and security...clinging to my trust in the decency of the human spirit...only to be clobbered by that brazen beast I'd come to know as bigoted bias."

Oh no!

"Many elections are bittersweet. 2008 was no exception. While celebrating Obama's historic election, California voters were dashing the dreams of LGBT children throughout the world. Today, they doubt voters will ever grant an LGBT candidate the same defining moment of acceptance."

Democrat Merkley takes Oregon Senate seat

(CNN) -- Democrat Jeff Merkley is declaring victory over Republican incumbent Sen. Gordon Smith in the Oregon Senate race, moving Democrats one seat closer to a filibuster-proof majority in the body.

"This is the beginning of a transformational change for America," Merkley said at a news conference at Portland State University.

He said he would be working with President-elect Barack Obama "to put this nation back on track."

Merkley said Smith called him to concede Thursday morning.

"I thanked him for his 12 years of service to our beautiful state," Merkley said.

Interestingly, there is a story in David Freddoso's book about teachers in Chicago, and the shorter workday they negotiated - they go home shortly after noon, IIRC; the teachers are paid very well, too (some making near $100K).

Apparently Obama went to talk to kids, and asked them about things they'd like to see, and they were begging for MORE SCHOOL!

Obama ended up siding with the teachers (maybe by silence on the issue) - apparently the union there is strong, and he didn't want to challenge them.

(I could be missing/confusing a couple of details, but that was the essence of it.)

My 85-year-old mother lives in a suburb of NYC that is predominantly white. There's a majority black community in the next city. A black female who lives in that city appeared at my mother's polling place election morning, and loudly demanded to vote. She wasn't registered in my mother's home town, and her presence caused chaos in the polling place.

The judges didn't know what to do. The lines of white voters grew longer and longer as her demands to vote grew more shrill, and eventually people late for work started to leave.

Question: Voter suppression by an Obama-campaign-trained activist? I think we'll see much more of this in the future, and we're not prepared to deal with it. Arrest her or evict her, and you'll be slapped with a civil rights complaint.

I believe Gordon Smith has lost in Oregon. It would be interesting to see how Wall Street would react to a Franken victory (and the dems having at 58 seats in the senate).

I've got a suggestion. Let's not wait till the Democrats start passing stuff we don't want to become law like the Fairness Doctrine or FOCA or goodness knows what else to speak up. Seriously, if we do we may be too late. Call or write your Congressman and Senators (well, those of you who know who both their Senators are - I'm in MN) and let them know that you are against such measures and that you will take your vote and donations elsewhere. Keep calling and keep writing, get your friends and neighbors to call and write. This will especially be effective with conservative Democrats, anyone facing a tight race next time, and any Republicans determined to lay down and be "bipartisan" no matter what.

It worked with the last immigration reform package and it had some effect on the bailout package. The voice of the people is constant, not an election-only thing.

Assign one poll worker to deal directly with her. let her know that for 'the sake of fairness' you need to record her complaint. Ask name, address, last time voted, etc. have a list of questions ready. then tell her if she brings her id and a fuel bill, phone bill, cable tv bill, back with her to prove residency, you will pop her up to the front of the line.

Hope for change? DJIA tanks yet again. The media is going to do its best to try and spin this as not the market taking Obama's presidency into account but rather find all kinds of other excuses for the drop (and ongoing drop).

The markets are trying to factor in what they expect Obama to do, and none of it is good if they are expecting higher taxes and cap gains tax increases.

I expect that when the market does finally bottom out and begin its slow, painful climb back up to the 4 digits range, we'll hear about how it's all because we elected the Messiah and how he implemented "change" by "hoping" that the market will recover. Or, whatever--It'll be pure propaganda BS by the MSM.

Without the wiggling butt, the back-and-forth motion goes back into the knife blade, and makes it move the wrong way. Wiggling the butt sends all but the slicing motion away from the knife blade, giving a nice thin slice every time.

Well, shake that thang then, babay!

Bill Whittle lost me on this one. What'd he say --if there's an emergency Barry will have his unqualified support?

I can think of several instances of emergency when I absolutely would not back The One. Like if Israel is attacked and he stands aside? Why should we be required to be "patriotic" and support actions that negatively impact our allies or go against the Judeo-Christian ethic? Does anyone believe Barry is really committed to doing the "right" thing or is he simply committed to his socialist thing?

Recounts generally speaking usually don't change the results (well, unless it's the 2004 Washington gubernatorial race). I'm hoping that rule holds for Coleman and Stevens.

I think we had another one like that in Washington - Cantwell and Gorton, maybe? Somebody will have to refresh my memory...'cause I'm probably screwed up on that one.

I don't have any confidence in recounts when large pockets of Democrats are involved.

See the movie trailer: "Stuart Smalley Goes to Washington": "I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and doggone it, a lot of people hate my effing guts, but that's...okay."

Police Called After Obama Campaign Scrimps Workers On Pay (Video)

The Obama Campaign workers were upset they were not getting paid.

Video:

Police were called on Wednesday after the Obama Campaign shortchanged their GOTV workers in Indiana.
Eye on the World and WTHR reported:

Lines were long and tempers flared Wednesday not to vote but to get paid for canvassing for Barack Obama. Several hundred people are still waiting to get their pay for last-minute campaigning. Police were called to the Obama campaign office on North Meridian Street downtown to control the crowd.

The line was long and the crowd was angry at times.

"I want my money today! It's my money. I want it right now!" yelled one former campaign worker.

A former spokesman for the Obama campaign said 375 people were hired as part of the Vote Corps program and said people signed up to work three-hour shifts at a time. Three hours of canvassing got workers a $30 pre-paid Visa card.

The large gathering of around 375 people prompted police to call in extra officers and set up temporary barricades. The barricades helped keep the crowd from spilling out onto Meridian Street. Police say the several hundred people in line were for the most part orderly.

"No arrests. Some of the people were upset at first because the line wasn't moving as fast as they thought it should. But we really haven't had any problems," said Major Darryl Pierce, Metro Police.

Eventually people did start getting paid, but some said they were missing hours and told to fill in paperwork making their claim and that eventually they would get a check in the mail.

"Still that's not right. I'm disappointed. I'm glad for the president, but I'm disappointed in this system," said Diane Jefferson, temporary campaign worker.

"It should have been $480. It's $230," said Imani Sankofa.

"They say that they gonna call you or they going to mail it to you, but I don't know. We'll see what happens," said Antron Grose.

"Talking about they'll mail it to us. I ain't worried about that, man. They're not going to mail nothin'," said Martin.

No. Gas needs to sell at market prices with no artificial hikes from the gub'mint.

re: #168 quickjustice

More likely just a voter who didn't know where she was supposed to vote (maybe she worked in the area). If you're going to actively suppress votes, at least do it in a state that you might actually lose.

Now he says the City faces nearly a BILLION dollar deficit in their five year plan. It is simply ASTOUNDING that this could happen when the City was placed under a fiscal watchdog years ago when they nearly went bankrupt. Under Governor Ed “Fast Eddy” Rendell the Philadelphia Intergovernmental Cooperation Agency (PICA) was created to oversee the City’s finances. This after City workers were economically devastated by the Rendell administration to balance the budget. Ah yes another Democrat looking out for the workers. But I digress.

No. Gas needs to sell at market prices with no artificial hikes from the gub'mint.

The gov't has some power to control prices simply by adjusting the federal tax on gasoline. I fully expect the tax to go up under Obama (even though the gas tax is one of the most regressive), especially if gas prices remain low.

Hello, seems I missed a set of shiny threads. For the record I have looked over Victor Davis Hanson's argument. It is as usual tempeerate, incisive, erudite and worthy of contemplation. Upon reflection I have found my answer.
No.

The Democrats have raped our fair sister of Democracy and now they are going after our mother the Constitution. They have used every vile trick available to debase public discourse to poison and inflame politics, to coarsen and infantilise the young electorate and to reduce whole communities to the status of bigoted ignorant servitude. They have engaged in fraud and sold themselves to foriegn money and potentates. Their hireling Obama has no claim on my loyalty. My oaths have been to the Constitution and not to any man.

re: #168 quickjustice

WTF? "The judges didn't know what to do"? Registration in NY ended October 10. She should've been told to leave, pronto.

Listen up lizards! One thing each and every one of can do is LEARN THE LAW. When you go to vote know what your rights are - as well as what they're not. If I had been at that election place, I would've threatened to call the police on that woman and I promise you she would've left. We're going to have to learn to be in your face and up to the challenge of dealing with Chicago-style politics in the future.

Here in NY State:

2008 GENERAL ELECTION DEADLINE
MAIL REGISTRATION - Sec. 5-210(3)
Applications must be postmarked not later than October 10th and received by a board of elections not later than October 15th to be eligible to vote in the General Election.

IN PERSON REGISTRATION - Secs. 5-210, 5-211, 5-212 - Press Release( 24KB)
You may register at your local board of elections or any state agency participating in the National Voter Registration Act, on any business day throughout the year but, to be eligible to vote in the November general election, your application must be received no later than October 10th except, if you have been honorably discharged from the military or have become a naturalized citizen since October 10th, you may register in person at the board of elections up until October 24th.

Green power is bad for salmon...

You see, when the wind is really blowing and the farms are operating at maximum capacity, the present system will not be able to handle all of that electricity, which ultimately affects fish.

This isn't just a theory - it actually happened recently. At the end of June, there was an unexpected surge in wind power and too much energy was created for the regional grid to handle. To compensate, the dams cut their power by spilling more water.

Spilling more water is dangerous for fish because water plunging from the dams into the river becomes saturated with air. Air is mostly nitrogen and salmon do not like nitrogen saturation.

Neither do I. But they may not rise as quickly as you think. Ironically, the subprime mortgage/financial crisis actually contributed to the drop. Apparently a lot of the same companies heavily invested in mortgage backed securities also invested in oil. When the market tanked, oil followed (lack of trust in the market prompted investors to pulled out). It was pretty interesting a few weeks ago to hear the Saudis announce that they were cutting production to stabilize prices; in spite of the announcement the price per barrel dropped another two bucks that day.

When I was a poll Inspector, tried to late this year after telling everyone else to, we knew what to do. First you ask their home address, then you offer to make a call and get their correct polling station. Finally you can hand anybody a paper ballot, if it doesn't deserve to be counted that is supposed to be somebody elses problem. Once it goes in the "challenged" box the irate person should go away. The envelope gets sent to the Board at the end of the night. Since she was in the wrong district the candidates would have been wrong for some offices, no idea what if anything would have been counted.

This op-ed from 2006 just came true today,

Waiting Bush out

Mr. Ahmadinejad believes that the world is heading for a clash of civilizations with the Middle East as the main battlefield. In that clash Iran will lead the Muslim world against the "Crusader-Zionist camp" led by America. Mr. Bush might have led the U.S. into "a brief moment of triumph." But the U.S. is a "sunset" (ofuli) power while Iran is a sunrise (tolu'ee) one and, once Mr. Bush is gone, a future president would admit defeat and order a retreat as all of Mr. Bush's predecessors have done since Jimmy Carter.

The mullahs are smiling.

i wish i was a cartoonist, as i have a great idea for an Inauguration Day cartoon. The setting is an old West town that has obviously been thru a lot, buildings shot up, on fire, etc. The grizzled, rugged ol' sheriff name of Bush, bullet holes in his hat, is getting ready to ride off into the sunset but is just waiting on his replacement to show up. Next panel is a silhouette of the new sheriff riding into town, with the sun rising behind him (the rays reading "Hope!" "Change!"). But the next panel shows the new sheriff, Obama, riding into town on a squeaky toy horse, wearing a shiny new Woolworths cowboy outfit, toy sixshooter in one hand and a huge lollypop in the other, badge and hat way too big for him (thank goodness for those big ears!) while bullets labeled "Russia", "Nuclear Iran", "Hamas" etc. fly overhead. Sheriff O's speech bubble would be something like, "Don't worry, people, I'll grow in to it! I HOPE!".

(I wish C&F were still cranking them out, I can see them as having the perfect style for this.)

(Yes, I know Woolworths has been out of business for years, I was trying to evoke an earlier time when Westerns were the big thing.)

We talked about referendums and socon's yesterday. I think a lot of people make the point the socon is good but they don't want it in the party platform. There seemed to be a lot of socon's that can't understand that. They have to have it all or they won't vote. That seems to be election illiterate to me. It's pulling the independents to your sides that wins the elections. It's not running a conservative candidate unless that candidate can persuade the non socons. The educational system turns out greens not socons. Until they get their first mugging.

Barry Goldwater had it right.

I think the real referendum in the election is that people do want more government sponsored socialism. Enron, the banking crisis have shown that big institutions that get to create their own free market rules produce power and corruption. And it's the everyday voter that gets hurt the most. Capitalism isn't going to work well if the markets aren't fair and well regulated.

Things like insurance, health care, mortgages, credit reporting are all pretty much stacked against the voter. Your credit follows you into places it shouldn't be allowed to go, you change jobs and your pre existing conditions are no longer covered. You retirement fund also goes up in flames. There is no human liquidity when moving jobs that favors the voter.

Everyone that had a low end sub prime mortgage has that story. Banks advertise personal service with a smile, but when you do go talk to them about a problem without a high prices lawyer or accountant then you will get stonewalled by every person working for the bank. The confidence loss in the banking system starts right there.

Corruption eroded the Republican base 4 years ago and it still does today.

The first thing to do if Ted Steven's serves another term is to give him the worst office in DC.

Then I tried it. You know they say it only takes once and they are right.

Good afternoon, Gak!
I'm so glad you survived your older brothers.
I had 3 younger brothers, and also survived!

What's Amy up to nowadays? Chelsea?

(Amy) Carter went on to pursue a master's degree in art history at Tulane University in New Orleans. There she met James Wentzel, a computer consultant, whom she married in 1996.

Today, Amy Carter (she kept her name) lives a quiet life in Atlanta with her husband and seven-month-old son, Hugo James Wentzel. She declines to be interviewed. She is a board member at the Carter Center, the human rights and diplomacy center established by her father.

That's the election of The One driving oil down.

re: #581 Iron Fist

Everything is racist to racists. The Nazis tried to come up with "Aryan" mathematics, "Aryan" Chemistry, etc. In this country we have Ebonics...

One of the difficult things for President Obama is going to his character of leadership over all people. I have had successful black bosses in the military and out of it. They all had one thing in common. They didn't let race blind their job decisions. They wanted performance. A lot of the black fringe supporting Obama are clueless about that mindset. In the military people of any race that thought racially were set back and not promoted. At least in my area. They were flagged as "couldn't lead"

We will see how Obama wields power. It will set a standard for minorities in public office. He can set them back or move them forward. If he Chicago machines it, I think he will get in trouble. They are people he needs to put under the bus.

When the inexperienced reach new levels of power, they often get religion and see things in a new way. And in a new perspective. But they are also inclined to make huge bozo like mistakes til they reach a better experience level. I think the only thing here that can help President Obama is Bill Clinton.

So after the election what the headline?

Gregoire faces problems aplenty

As budget deficit looms, economy and creating jobs are top priorities

Any further comments on the media will earn me a serious *whack* from Stinky.

You cannot survive if you do not know the past. We know why all the other civilizations have collapsed--from an excess of welfare, of richness, and from lack of morality, of spirituality. The moment you give up your principles, and your values . . . the moment you laugh at those principles, and those values, you are dead, your culture is dead, your civilization is dead. Period. —Oriana Fallaci

And unfortunately, we see far too many so-called "conservatives" doing this as well. They laugh at reason, they laugh at education, they belittle the Enlightenment, they attempt to undermine the Constitution to advance their religious and moral beliefs.

What blew my mind was Prop 1A passing. $20 billion for a train that supposedly will go from LA to SF. Actual projected route will not go SF but to Gilroy down by San Jose. Proponents also claimed a two-hour transit time. No train on earth currently goes that fast, and the projected route has hardly any straightaways. Not quite a bridge to nowhere, but close.

The Dem's are closer to a filibuster proof majority.

Democrats still have shot at filibuster-proof Senate

LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) -- Thanks to a late Democratic victory in Oregon, the party still has a shot at a filibuster-proof Senate but it may take several weeks to sort out as tight races in Alaska, Minnesota and Georgia will force delays in determining the chamber's ultimate makeup.
The plot thickened in the Democratic Party's quest for 60 Senate seats when it was determined Thursday that Oregon House Speaker Jeff Merkley has unseated Republican incumbent Gordon Smith in that state. Smith had been leading that race, but Merkley pulled ahead overnight and Smith conceded the race early Thursday morning.
The gap between the two men was just a few thousand votes, according to the Portland Oregonian. Smith had been a senator in Oregon for the last 12 years, and his ouster puts all Democrats representing West Coast states in the Senate.
Democrats need exactly 60 seats to thwart any future Republican filibusters; Merkley's win gives them 55. Two independents, Joe Lieberman of Connecticut and Bernie Sanders of Vermont, sit in the Democratic caucus, making the filibuster-proof Senate possible.

You may have been delayed in the General Election of 2008 but I am confident that you have been afforded an incredible opportunity in 2012! This will be the election where my two oldest children will have the opportunity to vote for the first time for President of the United States. It will be a moment that will once again define history and shatter that glass ceiling once and for all! You are an inspiration to many and an incredible example of the type of individual that we need to lead our country. I want to personally thank you for your selfless and tireless efforts these past three months. You have stood strong in the face of incredible adversity and personal attack. Your grace and consistency in staying focused on the tasks at hand were so deeply appreciated by myself and all of my family. Govenor, we wish you all the best in these next several years and look forward to seeing you on the campaign trail in the future. You have our support and our deepest admiration. As a mom of a special needs child myself I also want to thank you for the messages you shared with the many families that you met. It is through the commardarie and companionship of those who have gone ahead of me and are here with me now that we face the unique challenges and opportunities that make our children the unique and special people that they are. Our prayers are with you and your family as you continue on your very special journey with Trig. May God continue to give you strength of your convictions and the peace that only He can provide. With Warmest Regards,

re: #168 quickjustice

I don't understand why this happened. I worked the polls in NYC myself- we went to a training course where what to do in this situation was made very clear. if someone is at the wrong polls you direct them to the correct one. If they still insist, you offer a provisional ballot. If they still insist on using the machine to vote, you give them a certificate to obtain a court order. If they become loud and disruptive, you call your coordinator to deal with it. If you feel you are in danger, you call the police. (we had Police Officers at the polls all day) This situation should not have impeded other voters in any way.
What to do is very clear- I am wondering if the poll inspectors just panicked?

They are blowing big money on funding terrorism, their military, and their nuclear weapons program, and theft by the religious kleptocracy. They are so incompetent that they ship their crude oil to other countries to be refined into gasoline, then re-import the gasoline. They are cutting subsidies that are used to placate the population.

Oil is their only significant export.

They are not making any money at all.

Sweet.

re: #651 Suihei Deloi

I thought it $10 billion, not 7. But who's counting right?

What blew my mind was Prop 1A passing. $20 billion for a train that supposedly will go from LA to SF. Actual projected route will not go SF but to Gilroy down by San Jose. Proponents also claimed a two-hour transit time. No train on earth currently goes that fast, and the projected route has hardly any straightaways. Not quite a bridge to nowhere, but close.

I voted against that idiotic vanity project. I can't beleive it passed.

I just can't imagine Barry sitting in a room with Bush and all the other grownups getting his intelligence briefing. I bet he wets his pants. Hey man-boy, time to leave the lefty loonyism behind, grow up and take this responsibility seriously. You were NOT given a mandate to screw the American people.

He thinks this office is going to be a walk in the park, just like his campaign and election. Hmph!

Wasn't CA requesting some bailout money?

Big cojones passing a item like this without any money...no offense, but hope state taxpayers pony up.
