But one thing it does change is a state of mind ... African Americans have been citizens for ... (generations ) but there is a real sense now that all things are possible," said Roberts.

All things will not be possible until 'they' have a canidate that does not take advantage of blacks and prop them up as a priveleged underclass. Obama is going to end up damaging the lives of blacks more that any other president. Is the average (poor) black person thinking all things are possible in the sense of hard work and achievement leading to personal success now that Obama is in office? Or are they thinking all things are possible in the sense that the fruits of previous hard work are now going to be shared with them?

When American history was made Tuesday, the much-maligned media responded.

No sooner was Barack Obama elected the first black president of the United States than newspapers around the country fired up their presses and cranked out millions of extra copies.

With headlines like "Obama Sweeps to Historic Victory,"

It's all about feeling good about not being racist, except all they can think about is race.

Henry Rivera, a longtime radical leftist, lawyer and former FCC commissioner, is expected to lead the push to dismantle commercial talk radio that is favored by a number of Democratic Party senators. Rivera, who resigned from the FCC nearly a quarter-century ago during the Reagan years, believes in a doctrine of "communications policy as a civil rights issue".

I wished I could ask him which one of Obama's forefathers had to pick cotton in the sun. The white ones, maybe?

The Jackson/Sharpton racism industry will never end til it is unfunded and relegated to the garbage heap where it belongs.

Things like reparations don't help anyone's psychology. It just would give money for people to blow away and the problem it was to help will be the same. If someone is feeling bad about the past history of slavery it's better to send them to a shrink or kick their ass. Success is always found by looking forward.

Let people volunteer if they think they need reparations or if they think they have white guilt. Then have the guilty white people pay for their own and the reparatees shrink bills.

Take up the challenge, Lizards. We keep talking about how we want to speak out against the left. Here is the golden opportunity.

Next time you’re in the company of Obama supporters, say something like: “You know, I didn’t vote for Obama. But there is one reason I am ecstatic that he has been elected. American has finally proven to itself and to the world that we are not a racist nation. If a guy like Obama can be president, then we are truly a nation that embraces diversity.”

Be prepared for the “Yes-but” response. Your rebuttal should be: “Many people said that by not electing Obama we would be proving that we are a racist nation. Now that we have elected him, we are proving we are not racist. We are not a racist nation. How can we be? We just elected a black president.”

If they say that not all people voted for Obama, tell them that not all people voted for Sarah. Does that mean those folks were sexist? And was the only reason to vote for Obama the fact that he’s black? Well if color of skin is not the only reason to vote for somebody, then color of skin is not the reason to vote against them, either.

Keep driving this point home. Be firm. Eventually, the claim will stick. I really believe the election of Obama, if played correctly, will take the wind out of the sails of the leftists.

And if the race card can be expelled once and for all, it will be a huge victory. It will spell the loss of one of the biggest tools in the leftist toolbox.

It didn’t occur to me until just now how important this could be. I am so indifferent to skin color, I can’t believe we even have to talk about it. But let’s not miss an opportunity to beat the lefties on their own terms.

All this talk of race, age, gender...makes me feel old.

Last night I watched a special that showed a clan of lions. The females run the show and do all the hunting. There was a very large scraggly male who was the king. He was all leathery and scarred and he couldn't even get up without obvious joint pain. There were all these other males circling the clan but not daring to come in. Well this group of lions was having a tough time because it hadn't rained in a while and game was scarce. At some point a couple of hyenias made a run at one of the lion cubs. That old male was on his feet like a shot and fired out of there and scattered the hyenias effortlessly and for good measure killed one or two.

So...maybe it is time for a change, but I wouldn't beard those old lions quite yet.

re: #26 Charles

Meanwhile, the Dow is plunging.

Well, it is. But it's plunging on more rotten financial news, not on political events or the President Elect.

It's also plunging on dismal psychology brought on by the panic atmosphere whipped up prior to the election, mainly by Democrats and their media water carriers.

Look for more plunging tomorrow, when the full jobs report arrives, if unemployment is higher than expectations. If not, we may see another small rally as people scoop up undervalued stocks.

The only way Obama will have an impact on the markets is through policy or appointment announcements that have some direct economic impact, like naming a new Treasury Secretary or announcing a firm commitment to raising the capitol gains tax.

A big problem going forward: the market seems to be bouncing off a low of around 8500 - it has done so several times now, and this hints that the bad news of a recession is pretty much factored into stock prices already, with people buying the dips to take advantage of bargain prices. The next problem, though, is the massive imbalance in so many 401k plans, which are terrifyingly heavy on equities. With each rally, you'll see people fighting the rise by selling back into the market as they re-balance their skewed portfolios. There are huge sums of money that needs to be reshuffled, and this may keep the market trapped in a trading range for some time. It may have trouble breaking through 10,000 and holding that ground.

I know there were alot of really horrible things done in the past, but what has this generation done to deserve payback? People talk about racial profiling, but I have to say, at least in our state. There is the reverse. My husband is in law enforcement. And on the back of tickets you have to put the race of the person getting the ticket. If you get too many blacks that have gotten tickets, the officer gets into trouble. Who cares if you are in a location that, the odds are most people you stop are black. You are to just look the other way so the officer does not get his ass chewed and get into trouble at work.

the problems and incidents you mention might breathe life into some old institutions we thought had died; the Neo-nazis and the Klan. How's that for scary.

But let's not be so worried over backlash that we tolerate the "forelash."

Meaning lets not just see these events as bad because they could cause racism against blacks. They are bad and they are racist in and of themselves.

Why do we NEED to have a discussion? They will never be satisfied. If Obama lost, we would need a national dialogue on race. Obama wins, we still need to talk about race. America has an African-American President-elect.

They are so upset that now they can't whine about racism, that they attempt to cling to it, just like we cling to our guns and religion.

244 oh_dude  Thu, Nov 6, 2008 1:06:00pm

(I commented on this yesterday)

The problem is this:

How will we know when racism ends if we don't all agree on what the "success metric" is?

1. Giving blacks the ability to vote? Check.
2. Blacks rising to prominent positions in academia, science, law, etc. ? Check.
3. Black President? Check.
4. Kids from the ghetto signing multi-million record and sports contracts? Check?
5. Odds a black person rising to wealth and stature greater in the U.S. than any other country? Check.

What else?

I do project managment for living. You can't reach a goal if you don''t have a way to know when you've reached it.

Or maybe some "people" don't ever want it to go away? And that's the point.

I know there isn’t strict logical consistency in the equation “racism = not electing Obama” therefore “not racism = electing Obama.”

I have my eyes on the bigger prize. I want to eradicate once and for all the myth that minorities are held down in this country because of racism. I am not saying that there are no racists left. I am saying that the country as a whole is not racist. And I am using the logic of the leftist Obama supporters to prove it – however inconsistent that logic might be.

I didn’t set up this race equation. They did. Now let’s hold them to the internal logic of their own system and take away one of their biggest tools of manipulation. I won’t be sorry when old windbags like Jessie and Al finally shut up.

A revival of the fairness doctrine in its old form probably would not apply to satellite radio or cable tv. The old doctrine was an FCC policy for broadcast radio and tv channels (the ones that come freely into your home). Satellite and cable are considered alternative sources and haven't been regulated so far. However that doesn't mean the new administration won't try to rewrite the policy to include satellite, cable, and internet.

Racism has been dead for some time except that Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton have to make a living somehow. Fanning the flames is their only way.

Racism didn't impact my vote, I made a judgement based on content of character. Come on, its the 21st Century. Let's move on, nothing to see here.

Such a shame, at one point I thought racism was diminishing to almost zero except for the few bigots that need to select any personal characteristic to use as a hurtful referent. The only people using racism as a cattle prod is Obama and his cult following.

I say we ignore the race baiters.

Although my father in law (american of mexican descent) told me last week:

"Obama isn't gonna win because people won't vote for him because he is black, and that is why I am not voting for him."

I got so uncomfortable i didn't bother clarifying if he meant "i'm not voting for obama because others aren't" or, "i'm not voting for obama because he's black"

He doesn't have that "chip" on his shoulder or the baggage that many Americans Blacks have weighed themselves down with. I am sorry to say that they have chained themselves down. Its not the White Man keeping them down, its themselves.

My two cents: I live in a majority black city, and I've seen no untoward behavior of any kind in the last two days, of the sort from the Wal-Mart story.

I'm in Seattle, and neither have I - but I don't find it impossible to believe. Just the other day, Black Panthers intimidated people at a polling place. I never thought I'd see that either.

In any case, there is bound to be a lot of anecdotal stuff out there, but I think it will stay very limited. Hopefully, this sort of thing will die down quickly, after the post-election "euphoria" of some wears off.

It's an effed-up way to express happiness, I gotta say.

My pastor is black, and he would have straightened that situation out right quick. I am certain the vast, vast majority of black people want no part of that kind of thing.

My worry is that enough bad behavior will ignite a racist powder keg that's been waiting to go off for a very long time. There are people on the far fringe of both sides who are just waiting for an excuse, it seems.

Ironic, isn't it? We elect a black president, and racial tension goes UP.

Sickening.

Yeah, well my CZ is half black and half white. . SO THERE.

Incidentally, I dislike (as in won't carry) pistols that have external safeties.

That's just one more thing to go wrong when your life is on the line and you have tunnel vision and loss of fine motor control from pumping adrenaline.

Its not that the safety itself can fail (although that is possible) its that in the heat of the moment, you can forget to disengage the safety, or (worse) accidentally re-engage it when you need that shot.

Obviously, this is a matter of personal preference, but I can't tell you the number of times I've been at the range or sport shooting where I've tried to pull the trigger on a locked gun by mistake. I'd rather not have that happen when someone is trying to kill me!

I believe not a word from the Obamas (or their devotees) about their purported desire for 'unity'. What I have seen is a willful (and successful) effort to construct a united front against diversity. All the long faces on the Left moaning about 'how divided this country is' have said nothing more to me than that they resent view points other than their own. Hahaha. Probably. Since I caused a little rukus with that Wal-Mart [true :) ] story, may I follow up with a story from the local paper?

A woman was campaigning for Obama and asked a middle aged man if he was really a "Marine for McCain?" He asked if she was really an "African American for Obama." They began talking, and another black woman showed up. They ended by holding hands in a small circle and praying for the fate of the nation.

Always remember, we have far more in common than we realize. Maybe even with the Kos Kids.

I think this will be the case with a great many of Obama's constituents. You probably saw the video of the woman talking about gas and the mortgage, and how Obama was going to "help her." Well, to me, her most important words were not gas and mortgage, but, "I don't have to worry." Meaningless or not--even if he is a great president--I think there are a whole lot of people who are going to be shocked that life is not just smooth sailing once "their man" is in office.

A 1911 is so diverse that it will allow Condition 1 carry (cocked and locked). The safety was forced into the design. Browning did not have it in the original.

When parody becomes reality...
Will the new president be a wide enough target for humor?

Will political comedy be easier or more difficult under President Obama? That was a key question discussed by a panel of experts here Wednesday night.

"The Daily Show" co-creator and political humorist Lizz Winstead, who hosted the debate, shrugged off the suggestion that the president-elect was too tough a target for real punchlines. She said likely jokes about Obama in the White House would revolve around how he handles power.

Roseanne Barr argued that the level of comedic sophistication will rise compared with the Bush era. "Obama is going to raise the level of intelligence (of jokes)," she said.

Reminds me of the clip Charles posted yesterday from the Onion. They have no idea what to do next.

On average African Americans earn less, are more likely to be unemployed and have higher rates of infant mortality and a lower life expectancy. They are more likely to be arrested and jailed and serve longer sentences than other racial groups

How much of this relates to their higher than average high school drop out rates, because "it doesn't relate to them"?

Perhaps a lot of this is also due to the Gangsta Rap being played. We live in a lower middle class neighborhood. We have several of these youths that dress like urban youth, talk like them, quit school when legally able to, flash the signs around and generally behave like they were raised in the inner city. They have never known want or need in their lives. The fathers (and in two cases both parents) are either senior NCOs in the Army or Warrant Officers. You got me as to a solution to this nationwide problem.

How much money has been thrown at racial inequality over the last 40 plus years? What has the return on investtment been?
Clearly the problem does not persist due to lack of funding.
An honest discussion on race relations would be great, but it is not possible. If anyone cocludes that the problem is not 100% due to White racism, that individual is of course a racist.

re: #394 DistantThunder

She would have to be found in the nude with some young boy to be booted from the school or even reprimanded - union you know.

I'm aware of these problems; I used to work for public school district, in their AV Department. We wound up being the dumping ground for incompetent, tenured teachers who couldn't be fired, but couldn't be trusted in the classroom, either. At least she can be reassigned somewhere out of contact with children.

For what it's worth, her actions are clearly abuse, by any modern definition of the term, if anyone in authority cares to press along those lines. In this case, tenure can be circumvented.

Several years ago, my son was involved in a similar, though far milder, incident with one of his middle school teachers. A series of letters to the principle and the school board wound up with this teacher moving on to an unspecified career somewhere else within the year.

Obviously, such complaints carry a lot more weight coming from an in-district parent of a student. But school board members are elected, and they loathe negative publicity like all public figures do. If they get enough email, especially if it starts spreading over into the local news, they'll be forced into action simply through self-interest.

Again: keep it short and keep it courteous. I made sure to mention that I didn't know if Diantha Harris worked for their schools, and that I was sure they would take appropriate action on their own after viewing the video if she was in their employ. No poo-flinging, please. Unless they try to justify or excuse this behavior, or hide behind the not-from-our-district excuse. This last doesn't fly; as anyone else would tell you, child abuse is everyone's concern.

Mama Winger ... I would really watch him right now ...but I am sure you already are ...I had a nephew who killed himself about 12 years ago ...my oldest sister was his mother and they were extremely close ... she was beyond despair ... seven weeks later she killed herself ...suicide is such a difficult thing for people to comprehend and lends itself to feelings of guilt by those left behind especially the parents ...it is the worst kind of stress on a parent ...

Oh, how awful!

For you and MW both - thoughts and prayers.

re: #467 OldLineTexan

A 1911 is so diverse that it will allow Condition 1 carry (cocked and locked). The safety was forced into the design. Browning did not have it in the original.

I believe it was the GRIP safety (not the manual/thumb safety) that was incorporated into the design later to meet military requests.

The problem with the 1911 isn't that it will allow cocked and locked carry, its that you pretty much can ONLY carry it that way. . .unless you want to manually cock the hammer (or rack the slide) prior to firing it. (And to do the first thing, you'd have to decock it by pulling the trigger and thumbing down the hammer ON A LIVE ROUND). Again, both are things I'd rather not think about when someone is trying to kill me.

The other thing I don't like about the 1911, is that its well. . .a brick.
A loaded all steel one weights 2.5 pounds. That's fine for a service or target gun, but not ideal for concealed carry.

mama,

First off, I don't believe I have ever congratulated you on your parenting skills. Please consider this as such.

Second, consider a "Lady Smith" Revolver like this one.

Although it has been a while since I handled one, the last examples I saw were well-crafted. And revolvers are more forgiving of beginners and stress situations. If you find something in .357 Mag, you can "download" to .38 Special...more than enough for self-protection in most cases, and easier to handle.

I say this despite my continuing apprehension about S&W's former politics, since AFAIK the HUD agreement they signed is still enforceable.

We have a safe with a finger keypad lock system. There are little grooves for your fingers to rest in and you just press down on the little pad at the end of each fingertip - in some particular order that you set - and the case springs open. It is super fast. I takes about 3 seconds to access - I think that's reasonable for safety's sake.

I've always kept the gun around the house loaded and out of reach of the kids. The kids were taught gun safety and taken to the range themselves. They were brought up being taught every gun can be assumed to be loaded. They were taught guns were not toys and punishment could be expected to be swift and severed if they fooled with them. To my knowledge they never did.
An unloaded gun is merely a short useless club.

If you have young kids at the home, I would say the ammo should be stored separately AND LOCKED. A small child can get in a lot more trouble with a live round than with an empty gun.

In theory, you could keep a loaded gun stored in a way that's sufficently safe to 1) keep out of little hands, and 2) be quickly accessible. They have gun safes and gun locks that open with a scanned thumbprint.

re: #478 mama winger

Do you think I, a woman with small-ish hands and not much arm strength could handle a 1911 ? I have been looking at that one.

Try before you buy.
"Could" handle one. . .yes.
"Would like" to handle one. . .maybe not so much.
As mentioned, these are pretty heavy guns.
I see 1911s as more of a gun for gun buffs.
For a defensive arm, I'd suggest a Smith and Wesson model 66 revolver in .357 magnum. The .357 magnum round is just as good as the .45ACP round of the 1911, but the gun is pistol is far easier to clean and shoot, with fewer controls to worry about, and higher reliability. Plus you can shoot cheap and light recoil .38s in the revolver for practice.

Writer Mom...

No one can prevent you from keeping a gun loaded in your home (those living in major Marxist metro areas, check with your local gulag commander). You don't a concealed weapons permit in your home. However, you (meaning parents) must make a judgment on whether it is safe to do so with kids in the house. Their are products on the market that both safeguard a loaded weapon and allow for quick and easy access when needed (lock boxes that open with the proper code, even some that only open when your fingerprint is presented). Ultimately, I would be more worried my kid's friends (often from homes were their are no guns) gaining access to my guns than my own. My own will know to not touch (without me or mom present) and respect such weapons from an early age.

re: #546 looking closely

I have a Springfield Armory XD .40 with the grip safety...I won't carry it with a round chambered for exactly that reason...

I finally bought a Walther PPK .38. It at least has a 'decocker' (like a safety lever) that will release the hammer without allowing it to strike the cartridge. Yeah, I have to cock it before first use, but I don't know of any safe alternatives.

Any thoughts?

re: #551 WriterMom

Can I ask a gun question. When you have a gun at home, proper safe storage means the gun is locked and the ammunition in another place? Is that right or I am wrong. In either case, if a gun is loaded isn't that dangerous to have around if you have kids and if it's not loaded-how does it protect you if there is an intruder...etc..or are you allowed to carry a loaded weapon, or have a loaded weapon by your bedside, or wherever?

My father was a police officer. Every evening, his belt with revolver was over a dining room chair.

He didn't need to lock it up because he told us not to touch it. I know it sounds oversimplistic, but we obeyed. And we didn't obey everything of course, but that was clearly communicated to us that it was serious stuff. Plus, when he used it to shoot at groundhogs, it was so horribly loud that I wanted nothing to do with it.

I've told mine that they are not to touch it, but if they absolutely feel they must, come to us and we'll let them hold it while we supervize. They asked right then, of course, and never have cared since.

Never forget that Condi Rice is a contemporary in age with Barack and Michelle Obama. Though ostensibly a "conservative," she has shown in her attitude towards Israel and the Arabs that she adheres to the same equation between American blacks and "Palestinians" that the Obamas do--an equation concocted from the time the PLO was formed, by the work of the black separatists, Marxists, and Islamists who hijacked the Christian-led Civil Rights Movement from Martin Luther King.

But just think, for eight years she has been among the architects of the very policies that Obama successfully ran against.

How hypocritical would it be for her to vote for him. How could she face all who sacrificed so much? If she had any real core.

I am trying to make a good decision for myself, as after January he will be in Iraq again and I will be alone. I want time to practice.

I am a big, big believer in revolvers for self defense, for all but the most frequent shooters. It is as close as you can get to 100% reliable, and about three times as simple to operate as an automatic pistol. I carried and qualified with a 9mm for 10 years in the military, but still keep a .357 revolver accessible in my home.

A small .38 Special or .357 (the latter handling both calibers) might be just right for you...not knowing anything else about you other than what you've just posted.

FWIW, I think Barr is actually Conservative.
Wasn't she the one who said (paraphrasing) when she got on a plane she wanted a pilot who had actually flown one before, rather than the one who was most "inspiring"?

Roseanne Barr is an exceptionally flaky Obama supporter and hater of the right wing. She went insane on her blog to scream at Angelina Jolie for not coming out in support of Obambi:

Roseanne: Also miss jolie says she likes mccain too and hasn't decided who to endorse...huh? Aren't you supposed to be somewhat enlightened, or do you not know that the african daughter you hold in every picture had parents who suffered and died because of the republican party's worldwide economic assault on africa over the last few decades since reagan? whaaa...?! (for that matter, the thai and cambodian sons you are photo'd with weekly too who's pictures you sell to raise money to help the poor? Their families are victims of America's right wing military incursions too.

Mccain wants to continue with the idea of war for profit...the americans are over that thinking now! They have drugged our troops and lower classes into supporting their oil business atrocities for long enough. We want to save not lose our souls thank you. Now go back to making your movies about women who love to handle big guns that shoot hundreds of people to death. Ps...it might be good for your asian and african children's self esteem to know you support a brown man for the leader of the free world.)

Jon Voight

She was really yelling at Jon Voight for being a Republican but her viciousness spilled over onto Angelina.

Here's what she said about Jon Voight:

jon voight

is a frightened little girl in a pink ballet tutu, who acts like Obama just wandered in from the rain forest with a bone thru his nose and a communist pamphlet in his loincloth. The neocons who own jon voight and make him dance on the chabad telethons are the worst most elitist people on earth. glen beck and jon voight are their bitches... both of them are used tampons who must be flushed down the toilet immediately!

jon voight your evil spawn angelina jolie and her vacuous hubby brad pitt make about forty million dollars a year in violent psychopathic movies and give away three of it to starving children trying to look as if they give a crap about humanity as they spit out more dunces that will consume more than their fair share and wreck the earth even more.

I agree completely. I grew up around guns, and started shooting from age 8 on. My father put the fear of a serious ass whooping in me if I ever touched a gun when he wasn't around. Teach responsibility and disclipline and it's not a problem.

I only have enough money for a small flotation device. :)

If you're looking for something for home defense, and have a limited budget, I'd got with a shotgun. More effective than a pistol, and you can get a perfectly fine new shotgun for $200 - $250; even cheaper used. If you're worried about recoil, get a 20 gauge instead of 12, they get the job done just fine.

Much as I love the 1911, were I to purchase a carry pistol, I would almost certainly go with one of Dr. Glock's fine products.

I don't think Gaston Glock actually holds a Doctorate (and that's a big deal in Austria).

There are people who swear by them, but I also don't like Glocks. Apart from having a weird grip angle, a blocky grip, and a spongy trigger, the standard trigger pull on a Glock is 5.5 lbs. So now you have a gun that is essentially like a cocked and UNlocked 1911! No thanks.

Its not an accident that there is a high rate of accidental discharge among Glock carriers, and its also not an accident that Herr Glock spends gazillions of dollars hyping the "safety" of his pistol.

Check out the Walther p99 (or its American clone, the Smith and Wesson P99). This is the current "James Bond" pistol, I think.

Its conceptually similar to a Glock, in that its a polymer framed gun with no external hammer or safety, using the exact same finish as Glocks (overhyped) "Tenifer". In fact some members of Glocks design team also helped design this one. Unlike the Glock it has a nice ergonomic grip which is adjustable with inserts to fit different hands. This one has a traditional double action, with an internal hammer (and cocking indicator). If you WANT to carry it cocked (eg a Glock), you can, though you can also use the decocker to safety carry it double action.

One of the Russian dissidents who wrote about the gulag said they spent years in prison kicking themselves for not resisting more when the civil defense forces came for them. "What if those coming to arrest us wondered whether or not they would come home that night?"

Solzhenitsyn in The Gulag Archipelago sardonically congratulates the Stalinist secret police for their boundless creativity in the ways they dreamed up for arresting people. E.g., you'd board your normal morning bus to go to work, and the driver and ticketman were replaced with secret police - they drive you to the Lubyanka. Or someone greets you in a public place, says "don't you remember me from school?!" offers to buy you tea... and you're arrested.

As Solzhenitsyn notes, these incredibly theatrical subterfuges were completely unnecessary; nobody ever resisted.

OFF TOPIC - IMPORTANT

The 5 month old child I mentioned a few times last week, Katie is not doing well. They almost lost her last night.

Katie has Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome and needed heart surgery when she was born, was doing better but got sick last weekend, and had surgery last Wednesday. It wasn't quite "Emergency Surgery" but it took place a lot sooner than the doctors had planned. She was inproving, but suddenly all the readouts went south and they had to take her back to the OR.

Just to give an idea of how serious it is, she was in the operating room less than 15 minutes after the surgeon decided that they needed to go back in; and the entire surgical team slept at the hospital last night, just in case.

using the exact same finish as Glocks (overhyped) "Tenifer".

I read something from Massad Ayoob to the effect that in New Orleans post-Katrina, among cops and assorted others wading around in brackish water for days, the only guns that didn't rust were Glocks. And I don't think Ayoob is on the Glock payroll, so I trust his word.

I don't mind the Glock grip, and as to the trigger pull you can always get the "New York" trigger. And I like the simplicity of the thing. If you pull the trigger, it fires; if you don't, it can't. What could be simpler? One easy rule to remember.

Far be it from me to hold myself out as an expert, but a couple of observations/research results: 1. A shotgun is far superior for home defense. Try a medium gauge with a relatively short barrel. 2. An automatic is a special challenge. If you don't hold it firmly, you may get an incomplete ejection of the spent cartridge, often termed a stove pipe. This must be cleared before another round can be chambered and fired. I think you might want to consider a revolver. That said, a fairly large caliber is best for its stopping power. I favor .40 SW, although 9 mm will do if you can put it in the X-ring. Not easy under stress. Hence the shot gun for home use.

re: #686 Iron Fist

The best storage is to have the weapon and magazine in the same place (i.e. drawer) but not actually in the weapon. It can quickly be loaded, but it is unlikely to be accidently loaded. I've been around a lot of guns. I know a guy who's step-dad (we thought) was in witness protection. Loaded guns in every room of the house in places where they were easily accessible, and never an accident. OTOH, my best friend was killed in an accident with a shotgun.

Good safety instruction coupled with good discipline and guns are safe to have around. If there are small kids around, you have to be more careful. I'd keep the weapon under lock and key, but still with the magazine ready to be inserted into the weapon if it is needed.

I disagree. You should not keep a magazine for a semi auto loaded as the spring may become permantly compressed and it may not fire when needed. Keep the ammo handy but out of the mag. IMHO

I disagree. You should not keep a magazine for a semi auto loaded as the spring may become permantly compressed and it may not fire when needed. Keep the ammo handy but out of the mag. IMHO

Rotate your magazines weekly.

It's a wonderful sign that the Republican Party didn't even wait a week to start grooming young leaders for the future after this election loss.

It seemed as if the Party just sat around waiting to see who would show up to run for President this year. I like the idea of grooming young future candidates who have a lot of time to work on everything (even if they're already inspiring speakers.)

Go Paul Ryan from me, too!

Fact is I'm still trying to remember when McCain showed up. I didn't recall seeing him at the onset-I was going for Fred. Then it seemed all of a sudden, J. McCain is leading.

Obama just promised "hope", "change", and everything else under the sun and many people were gullible enough to believe it. I'm not 100% convinced anyone could have run against what we were up against this time. Really.

This plus the $600 million and the MSM campaigning for him 24/7 was a lot to be up against, indeed.

767 Bubblehead II  Thu, Nov 6, 2008 2:28:51pm

Then why not just cycle the ammo to a another empty magazine and let the previously loaded one decompress? Having to try and load a magazine in a emergency isn't going to cut it.

re: #729 rustynail

I didn't see anything in Birmingham, Alabama, either, although there were some gunshots late in the evening. I think in the interest of fairness, I should point out that the police officers that responded and hustled the Panthers off were black. That said, I worry about the mindset of some of our population who believe that everything is there for the taking by those who dare.

For the record only: I wasn't trying to be unfair. I didn't think the race of the officers was an issue, one way or the other - I didn't even know what it was.

When we had the Rodney King dustups in Seattle, a friend of mine (an armed security guard, at the time) who is American Indian but looks white stood in an alley with a black man, watching the situation unfold...the man turned to my friend, said, "Are you armed?"

My friend responded that he was, and the black man said good - revealing that he was a cop in plain clothes. Together, they kept a close eye on what was happening.

What I said is in no way intended to be an indictment or assumption about black people in general. I don't believe that the majority of black people are anything but extremely proud right now, and I am genuinely happy for that single aspect of this election. Having said that, I would guess that there is a small segment of the black population that has heard an awful lot of Jeremiah Wright-speak, who may be inclined to express their pride in a less-than-desirable way.

And of all the things I can blame Obama for, that is not one of them.

I think a lot of people think that life is smooth sailing for whatever group they considered privledged.

They might be shocked to find out that white anglo-saxon protestants still get rejection letters from job interviews, have store security watch them to make sure they don't shoplift, get pulled over for suspicous driving, etc.

Gee. Although I am not Protestant, I am a English-Irish-Scottish-German-French-Danish-American and I work for a living. My grandmother could and did pick a bale of cotton a day—I grew up sleeping on a mattress stuffed with cotton she picked and a pillow filled with feathers she plucked. I work hard for a living. This Saturday I get to do a job that will likely kill me and/or make national news if I screw it up. My biggest problem with job interviews is that my resume looks too good. I have some people in my family that Obama would consider rich. They got that way by working 12 hour days and weekends, moving to parts of the country they didn't want to live in to do jobs they didn't like, and such. None of them got rich because of inheritance or government handouts.

Like the war in the Middle East, sort of. It's an entitlement mindset.

Hezbollah recently made it clear that if Israel did absolutely everything they've been asking for all along, it wouldn't be enough. They now say that Northern Israel has some old Shiite villages from 60+ years ago that they will also need to claim (inside Israel.)

As for the "Palestinians," they say they need Jerusalem. They say they need 500,000 Jews moved to places inside the green line. They say they need to pour millions of Arabs into Israel to become citizens. They say they need for all these millions (and anyone else who calls himself a "Palestinian") to get reparations for Israel having existed for 60+ years. Even then, the "armed struggle" (terrorism) wouldn't be over. They've made this clear, too.

Meanwhile, Israeli Arabs say that the name of the country needs to change. (Too Jewish.) The flag needs to change. The national anthem needs to change. All Arabs must be as well-off as prosperous Jews.

It goes on and on.

People ask, "Why isn't it over? Why can't people just sit down and solve the whole thing in an hour? What's so difficult?"

why not look at a makarov? i love the one's i have.

re: #551 WriterMom

Can I ask a gun question. When you have a gun at home, proper safe storage means the gun is locked and the ammunition in another place? Is that right or I am wrong. In either case, if a gun is loaded isn't that dangerous to have around if you have kids and if it's not loaded-how does it protect you if there is an intruder...etc..or are you allowed to carry a loaded weapon, or have a loaded weapon by your bedside, or wherever?

We always had loaded guns around the house. My dad kept them high and out of reach. On several occasions he said in that voice that meant there would be neither mercy nor appeal, "If I see you touching, reaching, standing near or even looking at one of these guns without my permission, you will get a spanking." We had to practice safe gun handling even with toy guns. I've had a spanking or two for carelessly pointing a toy gun. We never had problems.

Think of all the variations that could be used for a graduated worsening of the 0bama administration: "O D@MN", "O H3LL" , "O F*CK" "O G-D@MN F*CKING H3LL" (that one for when the whole country goes down the sh!tter...)

I have to agree with the idea that loading a semi auto in an emergency is not the best solution. However, having a gun that wont fire when you need it is just as bad. Personally thats why I went with a revolver .357 and keep a quickloader at the ready.

I can. Obama sat in that church for 20 years. He could have spoken out with a counter message. He didn't say a word, never once complained about the hate. Blacks should be ashamed to liken Obama to King. Obamabots don't want to even the playing field. They want to get even. re: #203 calcajun

I grew up in New Orleans and remember when the African American
machine succeeded in controlling the mayor's office and most of the
city council. It was the politics of payback--big time. This may not be
any different.

What Change?

That machine just re-elected Congressman "Dollar" Bill Jefferson, after an endorsement on Monday from "Suga Ray" Nagin in "Chocolate" City, with all 17 indictments still pending against Dollar Bill! The opposition Dem candidate was a very clean and new, Helena Moreno, a TV News anchor, and aggressive investigative journalist ( used to be all journalist investigated, by definition).

We have a blueprint here of what to expect from this mentality, after it has ruined one of the most charming, beautiful and romantic cities in the US these past 28 years of AA administrations, and the indictments just keep on coming.

Three of Dollar Bill's family members have been indicted, or convicted this past year for stealing from a charitable fund set up by them to help poor children in the 9th Ward, among other charges, along with a State Senator, and a City Councilman. "Let'em out" judges have been booted by the LA Supreme Court or rejected at the polls, and former Mayor Morial has had four of his cronies and his brother indicted or convicted these past four years. Morial is now head of the Urban League.

Chicago's got nothing on NO, the book on political corruption was written here, as I have previously posted.

Their claim has long been, "it's our turn - the white politicians were corrupt before us, so, so what?" ACORN has a massive presence here.

Let's hope the appointment of former Clinton administration officials by Obama will moderate the efforts to repeat the pattern set here.

Can you imagine an Obama admin response to a national emergency similar to Dems Blanco/Nagin - before, during, and after Katrina?

Bush urged them to declare a mandatory evacuation on Friday, 3 days before landfall (I saw the press conference on local TV)- and of course, it was all his fault, with all the Metro and Public School buses left in place to flood to their roof lines.

Blanco refused Bush's request to allow for federalization of her National Guard for almost a week - after the deaths of about 1600 and the suffering and misery of tens of thousands, all because the city was a war zone without the 82nd Airborne, locked and loaded. They are what saved this city from total destruction by the local thugs via General Honoree', his intelligence, will and admonishment to the media - "don't get stuck on stupid". This AA General was not afflicted with "it's our turn" syndrome. So, there's hope yet.

Nagin/Blanco finally ordered it, the morning before Katrina hit, after repeated calls from Bush, too late to those too dependent on their Dem leaders after three decades, to take responsibility for themselves - and the world watched in horror the aftermath.

Compare/contrast that to Jindal/Gustav this past August - 1 to 2 million evacuated in an orderly, efficient manner - the biggest ever accomplished in US history. But the "our turn" dependents bitched when they returned on free transportation back to NOLA - their temporary evac accommodations were less than 5 star.

World events may postpone, by necessity, any efforts to quickly apply the NOLA blueprint of "its our turn" to our national government! If not, this attitude and the incompetence it fosters will cause sever breakdowns at the national level - and the corruption and waste will be of historical proportions.

Pray, if you can, for God-given wisdom to be granted to our pres-elect. He's surly going to need it! But, he can do a lot to dispel this notion of "our turn" now, if he so chooses? We'll see soon enough. Pray baby pray!
