Both Candidates' Websites Were Hacked by a 'Foreign Entity'

Science | Thu, Nov 6, 2008 at 2:03:11 pm PST

We don’t know what the McCain campaign’s excuse is, but way back in June we pointed out that the Obama campaign’s web administrators were making ridiculous, amateurish security mistakes: Highlights: Newsweek’s Special Election Project.

The computer systems of both the Obama and McCain campaigns were victims of a sophisticated cyberattack by an unknown “foreign entity,” prompting a federal investigation, NEWSWEEK reports today.

At the Obama headquarters in midsummer, technology experts detected what they initially thought was a computer virus—a case of “phishing,” a form of hacking often employed to steal passwords or credit-card numbers. But by the next day, both the FBI and the Secret Service came to the campaign with an ominous warning: “You have a problem way bigger than what you understand,” an agent told Obama’s team. “You have been compromised, and a serious amount of files have been loaded off your system.” The following day, Obama campaign chief David Plouffe heard from White House chief of staff Josh Bolten, to the same effect: “You have a real problem ... and you have to deal with it.” The Feds told Obama’s aides in late August that the McCain campaign’s computer system had been similarly compromised. A top McCain official confirmed to NEWSWEEK that the campaign’s computer system had been hacked and that the FBI had become involved.

Officials at the FBI and the White House told the Obama campaign that they believed a foreign entity or organization sought to gather information on the evolution of both camps’ policy positions—information that might be useful in negotiations with a future administration. The Feds assured the Obama team that it had not been hacked by its political opponents. (Obama technical experts later speculated that the hackers were Russian or Chinese.) A security firm retained by the Obama campaign took steps to secure its computer system and end the intrusion.

I, for one, look forward to Obama applying the rigorous security of his campaign to the secrets of the nation.

I have every confidence in him.

And now it's time for my pills.

Can I get you to redistribute those? After all, I have none. . .

5 Thanos  Thu, Nov 6, 2008 2:07:00pm

Russian Cyber mafia collecting credit cards, or just the normal ChiCom hackage? I wager the latter.

The Feds assured the Obama team that it had not been hacked by its political opponents.

Don't worry, it wasn't your political opponent, it was your country's worst enemy.

Isn't Sorros in Greece? May be we should look there. But then, why would he hack into Obama's web site?

I feel sorry for the idiots who gave Obama their credit card numbers.

Well, that makes it OK then.

Terrorists are no problem, President-elect Obama has been friends with at least one for quite a long time, and he is willing to negotiate with them with out preconditions.

But if it had been a Republican doing the hacking, then he would have had a major problem.

I'd agree that this sounds like the Chinese.

Actually, it's encouraging that it was detected and recognized for what it was, albeit after the fact. And I'm presuming that security was patched once the incident came to light.

Using the word "yet" implies that they previously have not been.

The MSM has been printing Obama talking points for over 20 months now.

No big deal, their just scouting the new team, or perhaps Chinese donors who merely made a wrong turn when searching for information about why their inaugural bowl tickets have as yet arrived? They will be looking toward even brighter horizons than Clinton ever provided/sold them.

Well there is absolutely nothing to worry about.

All that Obama had was Terrabytes of "Hope" and "Change".

If Tom Brokaw and Charli Rose have no friggun idea of what Obama will do, do you think any of his campaign staff did? Do you think Obama knows?

If they want good intel on the next four years, they need to sift through the garbage at the Dohrn/Ayers household.

I'm sorry to go OT, I hate that, but can I ask you extra smart lizards a technical question?

I've always had this problem and just lived with it, but lately it's annoying me. If a thread gets a lot of comments - say more than 400 or so, sometimes even less - I can't get the comments to load. If I click on the comment count or the last comment or any of the many ways to get to the thread from the front page, if there's a large number of them, the page I get gives me everything except the actual comments. I get the article with the green box below it, telling me the # of comments and the rules; I even get the links that let me click to "hide comments" (tried that, doesn't work), and "jump to bottom" - clicking that takes me back to the LGF home page. That's where my page ends, nothing below those links.

What really sucks is, if I'm working on a thread and commenting on it, or just reading or whatever, everything will be fine until the comment count gets high - then, when I click "new comments" to refresh the page, it just resets the page with all the comments GONE, just the stuff at the top that I already mentioned. I even downloaded and use Safari, thinking that might help, as I've heard it's more robust....just wondering if anyone else has had this problem or has any suggestions? Just really bums me out, especially if I'm really into a thread, to have it suddenly ripped away because the comment count gets high - and if I see from the get go that a thread has a high comment count, I don't even bother clicking it, I know I can never see them!

"Everybody is looking forward to Obama's change, for a change in the U.S. policy, particularly in the Israeli-Palestinian equation, which is the mother of all conflicts."

81 marcusa  Fri, Nov 7, 2008 10:54:39am

My understanding is the attacks were not centered on credit cards, but the campaign's policy documents. No doubt the details of those documents are out of date, but there is little doubt the general frameworks are still in place. They would be able to provide a general understanding of what to expect.

Wretchard at the Belmont Club thinks they may have been after their GOTV database, but I am skeptical of that, but no doubt contributor and especially volunteer databases could prove valuable. Not as a means to extract wealth but for other nefarious ends.
