US official: Taliban sought wedding party deaths

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Taliban fighters held a wedding party captive and fired on U.S. forces in an attack designed to draw U.S. airstrikes on civilians and stoke anti-American sentiment, a U.S. official said Friday citing "firsthand" reports.

The official declined to give further details of the reported events leading to the U.S. bombing Monday in the southern Afghan village Wech Baghtu, where dozens of civilians and insurgents were killed.

But such a tactic by the Taliban could mean significant complications for U.S. forces and allies — forcing them to break off attacks and pursuit of extremists in populated areas for fear that the Taliban would try to maximum civilian casualties.

Is Obama's New FCC Transition Head Talk Radio's 'Executioner'?

Brian Maloney at Radio Equalizer warns that Barack Obama is signaling his designs on conservative talk radio with the rumored appointment of former FCC Commissioner Henry Rivera as the head of his FCC transition team:

Henry Rivera, a longtime radical leftist, lawyer and former FCC commissioner, is expected to lead the push to dismantle commercial talk radio that is favored by a number of Democratic Party senators. Rivera will play a pivotal role in preventing critics from having a public voice during Obama's tenure in office.

Rivera, who resigned from the FCC nearly a quarter-century ago during the Reagan years, believes in a doctrine of "communications policy as a civil rights issue".

His exit during the Reagan Administration paved the way for the Fairness Doctrine's repeal when the late president appointed Patricia Diaz Dennis in 1986 to fill out the rest of Rivera's term. Had this not occurred, talk radio as we know it today would not exist.

For unknown reasons I was reading the lyrics to Pink Floyd's "Wish you were here" The lyrics fit earily well with the events of the election and the "administration" that is to come:

So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell,
blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?
And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change? And did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?
How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have you found? The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

Wrath, I was thinking about your advice on the last thread for the "Obama Haters" to chill & give the guy a chance until he does something as president.
Let me take a swing at that. In my mind the jury is in on this guy, proven terrorist relationships, 20 years listening to the rants of an anti-American, anti-Semitic, racist preacher & subjecting his children to it, his brutal treatment of the grandmother who nurtured him.
He was the only IL State Senator that opposed administering medical treatment to a baby born of a botched abortion. He preferred that the full born American citizen die a horrible death.

Yes! That was my battalion staff, and the picture was taken in my company's parking lot in Tallil AB. (The vehicles you see behind them are 3rd platoons).

I actually had the young lady who made the banner ride along in my gun truck for a mission up to Baghdad International Airport (BIAP). Her name is SPC Ward, shes the one on the far right in the picture. She was an RTO for Battalion. Nice girl. Dirty mind!

You will do whatever you are comfortable with.

My concern is that LGF will become a Conservative version of Kos (Kos Green Footballs if you will), and swim around the deep end of Obama Derangement Syndrome, just because he is not "our" guy. That would be greatly immature, and stupid of us (as it was of "them" with Bush). But I don't have any power over LGF, so if it happens, its up to Stinky/Charles to ban people, or whatever. But to me LGF is my corner of the larger Republican Party, then Conservative Movement, and ultimately American people. I would advise every Republican, Conservative and American to give the guy a chance, keep an open mind, and temper our emotions over the "other" guy.

I saw the destruction that the Left's BDS had on OUR President's ability to get anything done, the harm it had on OUR Country's reputation, and ultimately OUR National security. If we do the same, then all of the above will only get worse. I do not want that to happen. I'd rather build with "our" guy, but that isn't who we got, we got "their" guy, and I pledge, and hope (*ding) that we now treat him like what he is.......AMERICA"S guy!

We can pile on when he puts his foot in it, but our country cannot afford a POTUS that gets our service people killed because of a combination of ineptitude and hubris.

Besides, we need to keep in mind the "boy who cried wolf" If we always attack, bitch, kvetch, gripe, carp, etc. about what BHO is doing, then we won't be heard when he does something really awful. Keep it respectful until the vitriol is really needed.

Being respectful of the office is not mutually exclusive to doing whatever we can to slow Obama down, because if we let him do too much, some things will never be undone (like the unfairness doctrine, the naturalization of all illegals, and end to the border fence, etc.). The progressive Dems have a mission: to rig the game so that the Republicans remain a minority power forever.

I'll do what it takes to stop that, no matter how many Dem's feelings are hurt. Honestly, do you think anyone at MoveOn.org, the Daily Kos, or DU right now are thinking, "Gee, I wish we hadn't been so partisan and so deranged in our attacks on Bush, we could really use some bridge-building."? Puh-leaze. Their efforts and the online cash they generated through passion (though deranged) alone, got their man into the White House.

Just got this email, regarding the new WH Chief of Staff:

Rahm Israel Emanuel is a mysterious fellow, as evidenced by his biography which is readily available on Wikipedia and elsewhere on the internet. But there are a few things missing or not fully explained.

First, Emanuel's physician father was an Israeli èmigrè who also worked during the 1940s with the notorious Irgun organization. Here's a link to the Irgun website:
[Link: www.etzel.org.il...]

Second, during the 1991 Gulf War, Rahm Emanuel was a civilian volunteer in Israel, performing the task of "rust-proofing brakes on an army base in northern Israel." (Wikipedia, New Republic). This is peculiar, because when the U.S. went to war with Iraq, Rahm Emanuel, a U.S. citizen, volunteered not to serve his country, but instead to be a truck mechanic in Israel. Moreover, here was a well-connected Illinois political figure with a father who had been in the Irgun, who is assigned to "rust-proofing brakes" on an army base.

Third, immediately upon his return from his desert sojourn working on Israeli army trucks, Emanuel at once became a major figure in Bill Clinton's campaign "who wowed the team from the start, opening a spigot on needed campaign funds." Where and how did Emanuel get this magic Midas touch, after being isolated working on truck brakes overseas and with no prior experience in national politics?

Fourth, after leaving the Clinton White House, evidently he decided that he needed some accumulated wealth and "security" if he were to stay in politics. So he went to work for Bruce Wasserstein, a major Democratic donor and Wall Street financier.

--Which leads to another example of Emanuel's 'Midas Touch': Over a 2 1/2-year period he helped to broker deals -- often using political connections -- for Wasserstein Perella. According to congressional financial disclosures, Emanuel earned more than $18,000,000 during that short period. His deals included Unicom's merger with Peco Energy and venture fund GTCR Golder Rauner's purchase of SBC subsidiary SecurityLink. Friends say his compensation also benefited from two sales of the Wasserstein firm itself, first to Dresdner Bank and then to Allianz AG. Again, for this newcomer to haul in $18 million in two years is almost miraculous. How did he do it?

Then in 2000 and 2001, Emanuel held a seat on the quasi-governmental Freddie Mac board, which paid him $31,060 in director's fees in 2000, and $231,655 in 2001.

In 2002 he won a seat in Congress, and by 2006 he was chair of the DCCC. And now today, he's the new White House Chief of Staff.

Somehow, Rahm Israel Emanuel became a boy-Cinderella who really lucked out.

261 PeeveCharlie  Fri, Nov 7, 2008 4:59:45pm

I was just on a leftie blog and, not being a wordsmith, needed a new Obama lexicon to describe this behavior. (do we need "the one" logic and lexicon now?)

I see the One. And I think "Obone"....then I think about what the next prez says about the widow of an excellent president and I think...he pulled a Boner...no a "Oboner".

Can someone with some worsmith talents look up to see if this new word exists in any lexicon?

Can we submit "Oboner" as in, "pulling a boner" by "the one", it is a short hand for Obama and the One speaking without a teleprompter and pulling a boner.

So we now have the "Oboner"...which he, the one, can only perform by himself, in his one-i-tude.

We need a new lexicon to describe the new depth and breadth of his meaning.

THE FIRST - only as "President-Elect" - Sen. Obama HAS Made others in the past one or two years. HOPE ONLY, that this WILL be his last. If NOT - HE is not as good a student of Alinsky as I thought HE was. If so, That Is GOOD NEWS!

Dude, you are blessed -- I was just taking a look at your web page, and I'm guessing you must've had surplus brains, because even if you're functioning at "<100%", you write a lot more lucidly than some of the professional "journalists" I encountered in my years as an editor in NYC. And, from looking at that photo of you log-rolling, all I can say is that your lovely wife's girl friends must be envious of what a sexy husband she's got. What I'm saying is, basically, you ROCK.

re: #259 Cato the Elder

Over at Pat Condell's website, he has a link to a petition against the establishment of parallel Sharia courts over in England (which are already a reality).

You have to be a Brit to sign.

I can't. Our family left the green and pleasant land in 1974. Because of the socialism.
