Bill Harris, superintendent of schools in Cumberland County, North Carolina, has put up a video statement on that teacher seen bullying students who supported John McCain; the incident will be “thoroughly investigated and appropriate action will be taken.”

Good on him for doing the right thing. (And it was a smart move to YouTube this.)

Hat's off to the Lizards (or anyone else) who got this to Mr. Harris.

I hope that some action is actually taken against that teacher. I have first hand reports from friends that this was going on in at least three other schools in a different town, same state. They reported it, but alas no video so it was just swept under the rug. Sadly, this incident would most likely have been as well without the evidence.

Good.

I was just listening to the New York teachers ad on WABC and thinking of all the GOOD teachers out there who work hard to do a good job. My parents were teachers, and they were superb. I thought of this woman as I listened to the ad and felt sorry for all the children who must put up with pitiful excuses for teachers.

Bravo! Now I, for one, want to see what action you'll take.

Speaking as a small employer, I am not always aware of all the actions of my employees. I do have the responsibility to supervise them and when warranted, to take disciplinary action. Giving the gentleman the benefit of the doubt, he's now aware of the situation. Knowing that there is an issue is the first step to fixing it.

26 arethusa  Fri, Nov 7, 2008 3:01:47pm

I heard that the child berated was the child of a serviceman. Which makes me question the teacher's behavior even further than I already was.

And don't you think that if this teacher and her dancing friends were willing to say these things on camera (I think it was a Euro station doing a documentary, right?), then how many other times has it happened? I think the teachers owe an apology to the military community for treating their kids like that. Imagine telling one of your students that her dad is fighting for nothing. Have they provided "grief counselor" type people for these kids? Talk from this guy is cheap. He needs to stand up and support the troops in his school district with more enthusiasm and if he can't, he should transfer to some area without military families.

2. Give this teacher a medal.

3. Develop a new program for each election, based on this teachers actions, to interrogate students in class and berate/humiliate anyone not supporting their political views and to harrass the children of military folks.

I consider people here with whom I disagree on a variety of subjects to be my FRIENDS. We are adults! This is the USA, where we can agree to disagree and still be comrades!

The producer of the film defends the teacher! (What a jerk)

Asheville – The producer of a film that features a former Asheville schoolteacher talking presidential politics in the classroom defended the teacher in an interview today.

Swedish filmmaker Folke Ryden said teacher Diantha Harris was “exaggerating” when she told a child her father would stay in the military for 100 years if McCain won the election.

Bloggers are off the mark in saying Harris was “belittling” a child during the May lesson in her Cumberland County classroom, he said.

Harris is a dedicated teacher who used humor – like saying “Oh Lord” and “Oh Jesus” when the fifth-grader said she supported McCain.

That language was intended to fire up her class and engage students in a discussion, Ryden said in a telephone interview from Sweden.

Another Spencer fan accuses me of "racism," for referring to that video of kids singing about Barack Obama -- he says I really was talking about Obama's daughters.

Yes it was certainly disturbing to watch this video, to see all those
fictional and real-life children brainwashed.

However, perhaps the most disturbing comment of all was the your own
comment with which you ended the piece.

“Admit it — you thought about this movie too when you saw the
creepy Obama kids.”

I personally have never found anything “creepy” about
Obama’s two daughters. They have always seemed to me like two
perfectly normal, sweet little girls.

Your comments might interpreted as racism. Whilst I will not accuse
you of such a thing, it seems to me rather a cheap shot and unwarranted
accusation, I do at least find your comments mean-spirited.

Goes on in this vein for a while, before telling me that I'm stupid (as well as a racist) and Spencer is a genius.

Of course now that Barack Obama is our President there'll be no way of preventing teachers from gloating over him in the classroom.

I have no doubt that right now teachers across the country are already hanging pictures of our new leader on classroom walls and teaching their students about the wonderful new age that we are all about to enter.

My German teacher, when I was in high school, was a Czech who lived in the Sudetenland. After that callow pacifist, Chamberlain, handed the Sudetenland to Hitler, Dr. Messerod had to go with the "new" curriculum. A deep and prideful man, the final straw was the obligatory picture of the new leader. He turned it around to face the wall, was denounced and fired. Through the grace of G*d he escaped and made his way to Long Island.

Students bullying other students = not okay.

Teachers bullying students = okay.

I've posted before about what happened to my oldest son. He didn't jump into the anti-Bush rhetoric and anti-death penalty/ anti-2nd amendment crap the teachers wanted and was "rewarded" by being made Larry Craig in the mock Senate they did. The bullies in the class were merciless and I thought we were going to have to pull him from school. I think the administration was also afraid of that (and the lawsuit the school district would have faced)-by the time I sent him back to school after a day off, he had been switched to another Senator and narry a peep was allowed about it in class. He did have some friends who avoided him afterwards.

I have run across people here in VA who think we don't have unions "like those big Yankee cities do" just because we don't have strikes.
You CAN opt out of the union in VA, if you're willing to go through a lot of bureaucratic nonsense. Very few teachers do, however, because it is the kiss of death. You can be fired on a whim and the union will cheer and support your elimination.

Democrats have been winning elections they should have lost for decades due their controlling the "education" of generations of children via teachers, teacher's unions and college professors.

I'm not saying it was a conspiracy on their part. It wasn't. But, generally speaking, liberals become teachers and professors. And as a result of that fact, even those that don't consciously try to be biased are going to impart, perhaps on a subconscious level, their ideas and belief system on the most impressionable.

Those of us who want to return to a society that values individual liberty, personal responsibility and a smaller limited government will have a difficult - if not impossible - task ahead of us unless we somehow reach the children that are being brainwashed.

But he's the only governor of a major state who is more than just a believer -- he's an activist, doing the bidding of the Discovery Institute. He signed a stealth creationist bill promoted by the DI into law, that will allow them to sneak their agenda into Louisiana schools.

None of us here have in any way posted anything remotely insulting about the Obamas' children. If anything we've been ultra respectful of Malia and Sasha and their rights to privacy.

Unlike the unhinged vitriol that came from the left about Track, Bristol, Willow, Piper and Trig Palin.

Track - drug addicted delinquent (with no evidence)
Bristol - egads, where to begin...
Willow - once Bristol's pregnancy was announced, the 2nd choice of moonbats for candidate as Trig's mother
Piper - unsanitary in her convention "spit-do" on Trig
Trig - Erica Jong (wasn't it?) speculated that Trig would wish he'd have been aborted

It's apparent that the IQ's of the adherents to Mr Spencer's POV have dropped precipitously since he and Charles parted ways.

re: #105 David IV of Georgia

Apparently Folke Ryden does not have a strong command of the English language. Nuanced remarks can be stronger and more telling than just blurting out how you feel. The teacher clearly expressed without humor or satire that supporting McCain was evil or wrong.

Also, being from "secular" Europe, it probably hasn't occurred to him that there are probably quite a few parents of those kids in that classroom who don't appreciate the teacher (an authority figure) taking the Lord's and the Son's names in vain in the classroom.

If it happened here in South Central OH (which a college professor of mine referred to as "the buckle on the Bible Belt"), the school board would already be getting demands from the local PTA for the teacher to be at least reprimanded, more likely suspended without pay, and preferably fired outright just for that, regardless of the context it was done in.

And yes, those parents are careful not to do it themselves in front of the kids or otherwise.

/we're all rednecks around these parts, ya know- ask any Columbusite, "transplanted" or otherwise ;-)

She wasn't using 'humor' but she was trying to draw the kids out. Into to admitting they supported McCain. (The Obama supporters didn't need reassurance that they wouldn't get into trouble.) Why? She had to reassure them more than once that it was okay to say so. And looking at them, one could see those kids were afraid to speak up about McCain in front of her.

They needed the reassurance because clearly they ALREADY knew the teacher's leanings.

So we know this wasn't the first time she had infused her politics into the room.

re: #169 Charles

I wrote this a couple of days ago, but I'll repeat it; if Jindal were a creationist, but never tried to push it into schools, it wouldn't be a major problem. But he's the only governor of a major state who is more than just a believer -- he's an activist, doing the bidding of the Discovery Institute. He signed a stealth creationist bill promoted by the DI into law that will allow them to sneak their agenda into Louisiana schools.

And then of course, there's that little "exorcism cures cancer" problem. If the GOP picks him as a rising star, they're cutting their own throats.

So noted and thanks Charles. I have heard his name bantered about as a 2012 contender. Conservatives and the GOP don't need a "cult-of-personality" that blinds people to a person's political flaws (like what just occurred this past Tuesday). I want someone who will draw on not only the 40% of conservatives in this country but also the 20% of moderates (the majority of whom swung left this time around).

Yes. It could also be that IF the Swede had recognized the teacher as "abusive", then what was he doing filming it? did he want to get her into trouble? (in other words, he's defending the teacher because he made her teaching-style public, and now he wants to deflect the heat. and the easiest way to do that is exclaim: "why, she's not being abusive!").

re: #133 Nuclear Ninja

I didn't bother looking up the OCSE to see who they are—I already know the basic facts of the story. Any cause from a tiny social group to a major country or even the UN can find someone who will print their version of a story. And if a credible sounding source can't be found to support the cause, it is very easy to create a impressive sounding organization whose only purpose is to make another organization look good. Happens all the time. When a story or "fact" is supported by some source, it is often important to research who published the source material in the first place.

Enact a Windfall Profits Tax to Provide a $1,000 Emergency Energy Rebate to American Families:Barack Obama and Joe Biden will enact a windfall profits tax on excessive oil company profits to give American families an immediate $1,000 emergency energy rebate to help families pay rising bills. This relief would be a down payment on the Obama-Biden long-term plan to provide middle-class families with at least $1,000 per year in permanent tax relief.

In CA the teachers union has a lock on the state.

And, huge amounts of money to throw around via CALPERS which the teachers union is invested in.

California is probably long gone. Let them collapse in on themselves so they can start fresh and hopefully abandon all the wacky people and ideas that make up that state. For example, there is probably no other state that has more energy alternatives (wind, solar, geothermal, etc.), that the looney left says will magically get us off oil, and yet each summer, year in and year out, they run out of power with their rolling blackouts. So perhaps we should not focus on them for the moment. They may have to learn the hard way the way the Soviet Union did.

But there must be a way in the other 49 states (or 56 if your Obama) to counter the looney left stranglehold on the "education" of children. I know people will say, "Home Schooling," and that's just fine. But there is no way home schooling will ever make a dent in the massive government-education near-monopoly in this nation. There has to be a way.

re: #16 MandyManners

Does the bully have tenure? What will the NCEA do?

That depends on what the investigation finds. If there is a finding of actual abuse - which doesn't seem at all unlikely - she could be history very quickly and the teacher's union won't waste a minute of their time on it. Child abuse. In a school. By a teacher. Bad Juju all 'round from their perspective, and they'll help shove her out the door, tenure or no. There are usually specific exceptions to upholding tenure when the act is grievous enough.

Failing that, if they can't break her tenure she'll probably be assigned to some job within the district that doesn't involve contact with children in any way. I used to work for a large school district in their AV department, which served ten schools and was in it's own building. We wound up with a handful of teachers so incompetent they could barely find their way into work in the mornings, and they stuck them with us because they couldn't fire them, and they figured our department was the place where they would do the least harm. Some sort of purgatory like this may also be an option.

But to be honest, this superintendent came across VERY strong. If you've never heard the careful way such incidents are normally addressed, you'll just have to take my word that this guy's statement sounds like he's calling for a witch burning in comparison. I think this woman's done. They're going to find a charge serious enough to break tenure and give her the boot, or he wouldn't be issuing statements this strongly worded.

It will take some time to complete a thorough investigation, which will involve interviews with many former students and parents. I'm betting it won't be hard to turn up more horror stories, and the threat of airing that laundry in public on top of the video will probably be enough for her to pack her bags voluntarily.

One note: the kid and her parents seem OK with this incident, or at least don't want to be involved in all the media attention. At least that's the story as told by another teacher. I'm sure they're near the top of the list of people the superintendent will want to speak with.

Outrider (#210),

Well, money time! Of course gas and heating oil prices are going to jump.

It's sad when mathematical illiterates get elected.

Exxon Mobil reported second quarter profits of 11.7 billion for this year. "Exxon's profits amounted to about 8.5 cents per dollar per of sales verses 11.6 cents per dollar for the companies making up the Dow Jones industrials."

re: #246 Steve Rogers

If you think there is a way to counter the Loony Left in New York or Massachusetts (where that shit started and was exported here to California in the '60s and '70s, btw), you're crazy.

2. Posthumously appoint Ronald Reagan or Charlton Heston RNC Chair in Perpetuity. On the principle of, "If you're going to work here, imagine them looking over your shoulder when you get ready to do something, and ask yourself, 'would he do that?'"

And then there's this - how many of her friends will now refuse to associate with her because the "teacher" has "taught" them so well that this little girl and her family are to be ridiculed based on their political preferences?

I don't know, but there must be some web-savvy folks here who do know. Any one?

In Win2000, most sites can be archived by right-clicking the mouse. Go down to "Save Page As...", click, and you will get the files screen of your computer. Pick a folder to save it in, click again, and that folder opens.

You will see "Save page as ..", with a field for the file name. Under it will be a pulldown field saying "Entire Web Page" or "html". Click on whichever one you prefer ("Entire Web page" would be the best choice), click "Save", and you're done.

I'd either;

1. Appoint Governor Palin- to reforge the Party into something worth believing in again, as opposed to its present RINO status. or

2. Posthumously appoint Ronald Reagan or Charlton Heston RNC Chair in Perpetuity. On the principle of, "If you're going to work here, imagine them looking over your shoulder when you get ready to do something, and ask yourself, 'would he do that?'"

Either one would be an improvement over the present situation.

The problem I have with Newt is that he has strayed from his own principles. And to be blunt, so has McCain and that's why we were not so pumped until Palin was tapped for VP.

Gov. Palin freaked out the RINOs because she is a conservative. She upset the status quo in the GOP RINO group. Tough. They better get used to it.

Decent kids are taught to respect their teachers. I could see in the girl's face everything she wished she could say back but was taught to zip it up. It was humiliating for the child to listen to the teacher and have no supporting forum to respond.

I saw the same thing, and I saw her suppressed tears of humiliation and anger. I believe there were other kids in the class who had parents in Iraq. They were all cowed by that bull. I felt even sorrier for the kid who gave the 'correct' answer. Who does she go home to?

Incidentally, I thank God that as a child I didn't have to witness the spectacle of badly dressed teachers jumping around on a stage waving cheer leader thingys. The kids in the video didn't seem to be enjoying the role reversal either.

Newt Gingrich wants to teach creationism in science classes.

I saw him do this in New Hampshire in 1995 during his first test-drive of a presidential bid. There, a local school board had been taken over by religious fundamentalists who were trying to introduce the biblical account of creation into the science curriculum of a school district in a town where many of the citizens worked in the high-tech sector.

"I think you can certainly refer to both creationism and evolution as something that people ought to be aware of -- together," Gingrich told me at a press conference in Manchester, N.H. "If you look at chaos theory and the degree to which the certainty of the 19th century is beginning to be replaced, I don't think there's any problem with teaching both."

Tried to find Mr. Harris' email. Couldn't. Came across this transcript of his YouTube statement.

11.7.08

I was shocked when I saw the clip of an interaction between a Cumberland County Schools teacher and her students as posted on YouTube. While neutral discussion of the political process is appropriate, at no time, particularly with elementary students, should a teacher infuse his/her political views into the discussion. Most disconcerting was the military slant that made its way into this discussion. We are a military community, serving over 15,000 military students and their families. We value the sacrifices, not only of the military parents but also those of their families.

We believe that military children are our children, military spouses are many of our employees, and military service men and women are our heroes. We proudly serve our military children and have received national awards for our support of military families.

I was particularly disturbed to see the uncomfortable position in which our children were placed due to the inappropriate actions of one of our teachers. Please be assured that the actions exhibited in this video are not consistent with the vision of the CCS. Moreover, the actions of one teacher do not represent the 7000 employees in our organization.

Once the video was brought to my attention, I immediately launched an investigation. Personnel laws prevent me from releasing information regarding individual employees and personnel action taken. I can assure you that upon completion of the investigation, I will take appropriate action.

What that teacher did was just so awful, so terrible . . . I just can't imagine. That child looked so completely all alone, sitting there.

And then there's this - how many of her friends will now refuse to associate with her because the "teacher" has "taught" them so well that this little girl and her family are to be ridiculed based on their political preferences?

What that teacher did has effects far beyond that particular moment in the classroom.

Yep - peer pressure at that age is awful. Hopefully, she will not be subjected to torment. The other kids seemed rather hesitant as well. Looked like a decent group of kids.

Glenn Beck played the audio on his radio program today. Since my computer speakers are not so swift, and my car radio speakers are so much better - I could hear the teacher's *sighs* and "Oh Gods* after the kids who said "McCain".

Horrible.

Kids should not be asked about politics in a classroom environment - they are too young. Only freaky unprofessional totalitarian jerks do that.

If the teacher was competent enough to actually discuss politics impartially in a friendly way it can help teach children about diverse views and such—I had teachers that would do such things when I grew up. This teacher was not able to exhibit such behavior. Children are fragile enough without a teacher fishing for comments to belittle them for.

I think the crux of the problem with Libs taking over is that they are working at the local and state level with their groups Vote America, ACORN, etc., and putting out their message constantly. Repubs are assuming the message is getting out. I don't know how many people I talked to who had no idea about Ayers, Wright, Alinsky, or anything else about Obama's socialist, anti-American connections and beliefs. And this was right up to election day. We are not doing a good enough job in getting the facts out. Yes, I know the Obamabots could care less what the facts are, but many other small government/pro National Security people may have been motivated to vote against the socialist extremists taking over our country. Newt Gingrich wants to teach creationism in science classes.

"If you look at chaos theory and the degree to which the certainty of the 19th century is beginning to be replaced, I don't think there's any problem with teaching both."

Friggin' pseudo. Come on, Newt, a lot of us look to you for some kind of intellectuality in politics, this is third-rate litcrit. 19th century certainty - was discarded in the 19th century, in favor of empiricism, which is the basic metaphysical flavor of socialism. Really, 19th century certainty is a contradiction, certainty was earlier and either theological or Newtonian, if you will. What Newt garbles badly is the replacement of 19th century determinism with the 20th century stochastics of quantum theory, but then again, Poincare knew about chaos theory in the (last days of the) 19th century, and deterministic chaos is as slippery as quantum mechanics. If anything, the most modern trends are to a new romanticism, the sterility of the lack of certainty in the twentieth century, has spawned a counter-revolution, just as one would expect, very dialectic. Creationism is an atavism, which is best sold as new romantic poetry, not science. Of course, in the Obamanation, science will be replaced by pixies and rainbows anyway, and Newt will soon be teaching basic auto mechanics as his public service assignment.

Newt Gingrich wants to teach creationism in science classes.

Chaos theory (derived from Heisenberg and Einstein) replaced determinism (which I assume is what the Newtster is talking about) because determinism required physics to behave in ways it clearly did not; the Michaelson-Morley experiment which disproved the existence of the "ether" is just one example of the negative proofs involved. To compare "Creationism" or "Intelligent Design" to the pre-Uncertainty Principle view of physics shows that Gingrich knows nothing about evolution, natural selection or physics.

He apparently isn't too clear on the scientific method in general, either.

re: #368 David IV of Georgia

If the teacher was competent enough to actually discuss politics impartially in a friendly way it can help teach children about diverse views and such—I had teachers that would do such things when I grew up. This teacher was not able to exhibit such behavior. Children are fragile enough without a teacher fishing for comments to belittle them for.

Exactly. She kept saying the Iraq war was pointless. That's her opinion - and nothing more. That's not teaching. That's preaching.
She not only shamed the kids who were forced to say who they were "supporting" (I guess now that ACORN has made it legal for kids, dead people and mickey mouse to vote - what the hell?) - she didn't discuss the topic in an educational manner.

And since that child's has at least one parent in the military, I bet she was indeed taught to respect her teacher.

I can recall as a younster, maybe 5th or 6th grade, when John Kennedy was running. I attended a Catholic grade school (and eventually a Catholic Boy's High School) in NYC. To this day, I remember the Felician Nuns (Polish order) lecturing us about how we needed a Catholic President. No dissent was allowed, I admitted to supporting Nixon and my parents were called and it was made very clear to them that my tenure as a student would end if they didn't change their politics.

My father took me with him the day he confornted the parish priest (Holy Name Church, on West 95th and Amsterdam Ave. if any NYC lizards recognize it) and confronted him. He threatened to go to the Bishop if this intimidation continued, and he was again threantened. To make a long story short, the priest was transferred, mother superior shut up and never said another word, and I went on to Power Memorial Acadmey for Boys (Catholic) to High School. I was never prouder of my dad the day he stood up to the Catholic church and called them on it.

I find it interesting that even today, so many in the Catholic church can overlook abortion support in favor of socialist polocies. So, long story short, it's not just black teachers, or democrat teachers, its most teachers who try to project their leftist views on others.

If it is a site that you want as evidence of some sort, then what you want is print screen, not saving the pages. Pages that have been saved as HTML can be altered easily. Pics not so much. If you are using Firefox, there is a plugin called FireShot that will snap an entire page at a time, no matter how long it is.

This brings up an interesting point: Sarah Palin is an evangelical and non-apologetic Christian, but she doesn't advocate teaching ID or creationism in science classes; Newt Gingrich, who has never (that I know of) claimed any particular strongly held religious affiliations, does.

Because Gov. Palin's faith is her own and she doesn't believe in using the government as a tool of oppression.

Apparently, Newt hasn't got that message yet and thinks that pandering to some percentage of the voting base is to his advantage somehow.

From my experience with the Church today, and I fully admit to being very lapsed, my last visit was a memorial service of the victims of 9/11, my brother included. What I heard, delivered by a woman lay person, not a priest, was just as damaging as anything Rev. Wright might have to say, but insidious in its manner. Yes it was a tragedy that so many were killed, but we have killed so many ourselves. I walked out.

The local catholic church here advocates for illegal immigrants, universal health care, and all out welfare state. Even though they pay lip service to anti-abortion policy, they overlook it enough to support any anti-life politician as long as he is social Democrat.

I hope that my experience with the Catholic Church today is not indicative of the church nationwide.

There is no way, if the people voting on party chair knew what I had in mind, that they would elect me. Besides- I wouldn't know what to do.

Also- I have two guys here I need to get elevated to state chair and deputy.

So you can be the power behind the throne? I like it.

Oh, goodie! I get to tell my wacko teacher story! All my notes on this incident died in a disk crash, so I have to summarize from memory, alas.

One day my oldest son came to me with a problem. "I've been told to write a paper about Michael Jackson molesting children." Oh REALLY, now.

It turned out the teacher (let's call her Ms. W) had been discussing Michael Jackson's legal problems, and asked "Do you think he did it?" Some kids insisted, oh yes, of course he's guilty. This set her off. "How do you know? Were you there? Raise your hands if you were there."

Of course, a few wiseacres raise their hands. "Well, since you were there, I want you to write a paper on what happened."

Well, then. Okay, she lost her temper and said something stupid. I can relate to that. I told my son, "I don't think she was serious. I'll send a note asking her to give you an alternate assignment, and if she asks for this paper, give her that." She didn't. And that was the end of that.

Or so I thought. Fast forward to our next parent-teacher conference. I actually liked this teacher quite a bit. She taught a lot of multi-cultural stuff, other cultures and holidays, etc, and I rather liked that. She was praising my son to the skies, and we were all getting along famously, so I decided to lay out the aforementioned incident, as a heads-up that her remarks might have caused her a lot of trouble in different circumstances.

Big mistake. Even though I phrased my comments diplomatically, or so I thought, she went into a spittle-flecked, screaming tirade. The meeting ended with her pursuing us down the hallway in front of some very saucer-eyed parents waiting their turn for their conferences. She insisted we meet with the Principal so she could SET US STRAIGHT.

So I called the Principal the next day. He seemed rather wary, but soon mellowed as he realized I wasn't quite the fire-breathing monster Ms. W must have described.

In the meantime, my son was angry with me. "Yeah, she's crazy, but I've figured out how to handle her. You shouldn't have mentioned that. I just want to keep going to the same class because I have friends there."

So I decided on how to handle the meeting with the teacher and the principal: I was going to lose. Deliberately.

I started with a statement that Ms. W seemed to have taken my remarks as a personal attack, and that this was not my intention, and that she was not deserving of such. The principal asked about the incident I had referred to, and Ms. W denied it had taken place, insisting my son had made it up.

And then it was her turn. She lambasted me up one side and down the other, for 15 minutes. "I'm a VERY BUSY teacher with a lot of important duties, but now I've got to come down here and waste my time (here she glanced at her watch, a nice touch, I thought) to defend myself from a lot of racist claptrap! I am outraged!"

Huh? Racist? What? Is she a RACE? I honestly hadn't noticed until now, but I looked and her skin WAS a bit dark... What race IS she? It wasn't obvious to me, nor would it have mattered.

After it was all over, the Principal walked me to my car. He looked rather shocked. "I have never before seen anyone be so conciliatory and reasonable, and I have never seen it so poorly reciprocated. I just saw a side of Ms. W I have NEVER seen before."

"Good," I replied.

My son stayed in her class, and had no more trouble from her the rest of the year. Soon thereafter she was kicked upstairs into some Department of Racial Something-or-Other, and I have no idea where she is now.

With all due respect Charles, those are Newt's words
supposedly made in 1995 to a reporter for an on-line magazine that says

The American Prospect was founded in 1990 as an authoritative magazine of liberal ideas, committed to a just society, an enriched democracy, and effective liberal politics. Robert Kuttner, Robert Reich, and Paul Starr launched the magazine initially as a quarterly.

Since then, the Prospect has grown into a magazine with a paid circulation of more than 37,000, a special in-depth report in most issues, and a daily Web magazine with more than 1 million unique monthly visitors.

Our mission, simply put, is to rise to the momentous occasion that confronts all Americans who seek a just society built on our greatest traditions. Contemporary conservatism stands to thwart those traditions; it advances its agenda by way of stealth, fear-mongering, and a massive propaganda apparatus. It is our mission to expose that agenda and the lies that support it.

[emphasis realwest]
Mind you, I'm not a "Newt for President" fan or anything of the type, but it would seem to me that the American Prospect might have an axe to grind, no?
Not to mention that this was from 2007 (the article I mean) and I don't know if Newt really believes this or not - he is every bit the political animal that John Podesta and Emanuel are.
Anyone know where to reach Mr. Gingrich so I can ask him point blank if these are his words and if he still believes in them?

Palin denounces her critics as cowardly

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin called her critics cowards and jerks Friday for deriding her anonymously and insisted she never asked for the expensive wardrobe purchased for her use on the presidential campaign.
"I never asked for anything more than a Diet Dr. Pepper once in a while," Palin said as she returned to the governor's office from her two-month odyssey as the GOP vice presidential nominee. She said the Republican National Committee paid for the tens of thousands of dollars in designer clothes and accessories.

She particularly lashed out at the anonymous Republican campaign sources cited in a Fox News report who said she did not know Africa was a continent, not a country, and could not name the three countries in the North American Free Trade Agreement — Canada, the United States and Mexico.
"I consider it cowardly" that they did not allow their names to be used, she said.
Palin said those allegations aren't true. She recalled discussing Africa and NAFTA with aides who prepared her for the vice presidential debate with Democrat Joe Biden.

logboy (#490),

In her October 21 New York Times column (subscription required), Maureen Dowd wrote that potential Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama (IL) is "intriguingly imperfect," citing as one example the fact that "[h]is ears stick out." In a December 11 weblog entry, Chicago Sun-Times Washington bureau chief Lynn Sweet wrote that Obama, following a press conference the previous day in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, "headed toward New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd and chided her -- in a kidding way -- for a comment in the 12th of 14 paragraphs in an Oct 21 column. She wrote that Obama's 'ears stick out.' " During the exchange, Obama said: "I just want to put you on notice. I'm very sensitive," adding, "I was teased relentlessly when I was a kid about my big ears."

Ya got big ears Barry, deal with it.

No, he's going to "put you notice."

Thanks for the reply and it's something I'm seeing even in Southern Catholics. Id-dominated religion, the crackpipe of socialism.

I'm really bummed out now. I'll see everyone tomorrow.

re: #495 rickadams

Yeah, so he's going to "investigate" the situation...before I congratulate him too much, I'll wait for the outcome of the investigation. Is this woman still in the classroom? Is she just going to get a little letter in her file but still continue on?

Public schools get extra federal dollars for each active duty dependent child in the classroom. And most military parents teach our kids respect for authority and for education. This public school system isn't going to want to lose most of their military dependent students.

Those are his words.

I understand opposing creationism each time a locality tries to bring it in (because when the wider community finds out what's happening, they generally object). But I'm wavering on choosing candidates or leaders based on that item. Because when you look at the schools, there are lots of things that get in there as an agenda that are at the very least detracting from quality time on the 3Rs and at most are brainwashing. There are the prayer circles around the flagpole praying to Jesus (we've raised the kids Jewish)... the coaches blessing the players and praying to Jesus... the sex ed way too early and with an acceptance of promiscuity that lots of people wouldn't agree with if they knew. Because, while these issues need to constantly be pursued and opposed, I'm thinking in the bigger picture, I don't want the lefties to be in charge very long as it will bring on starvation around the world and drudgery (and possibly starvation) in the U.S. The conservative mix is what lifts up people everywhere. The left gets so upset about the gap between rich and poor, but I'm always evaluating countries by how well the poorest are doing vis a vis hunger. I've been poor before and it's not the end of the world as long as I wasn't hungry. The opportunity is the thing.

I hope that my experience with the Catholic Church today is not indicative of the church nationwide.

My experience with the Catholic Church on the East Coast of Australia goes something like this:-

During the 1970 a faction of hard core leftists pushing 'Liberation Theology began to take control of the seminaries, especially the Main East coast seminary at Manly Beach on Sydney's north shore. That seminary is now an up-market hotel! It was closed down after the academic leadership were found to have instituted an activist homosexual agenda that negatively discriminated against straight young men. Homosexual seminarians were often seen in 'gay bars' in east Sydney picking up 'friends. Eventually when the numbers of seminarians fell to single digits per year out of an East coast population base of 15 million, and the average age of parish priests rise alarmingly the whole 'shitbag' was closed down on orders from Rome. A similar thing happened in convents where Liberation Theology was pushed even harder that in the seminaries. The numbers of nuns both teaching and nursing fell lower and lower until there are virtually no nuns left except for a few in their 80s and imported Philappina nuns. Catholic schools are now staffed by lay teachers almost exclusively. Many are still liberal but most of the strongest and most academically successful are traditional conservative and religiously based and produce well rounded and superbly educated young men and women.

The rot stopped in the 1990s when Cardinal George Pell gathered about 20 strong dedicated priests with good formation around him and set to cleaning the 'stables' in the Victorian Catholic community.
Cardinal Pell then moved to St Mary's Cathedral in Sydney. Closed Manly Seminary and opened a traditional seminary South of Sydney staffed by academically excellent and well rounded theological scholars. Most of the parishes are still being cleaned out of their liberation theologically inspired priests and Catholic vocations to the cloth are increasing once more.

Queensland is the next state in line for the Pell theological juggernaught. There exists in Brisbane the State capital of Queensland a single traditional Catholic parish headed by a mate of mine, a Jesuit priest. In his parish alone he had 3 vocations last year. The rest of the State of Queensland combined has had zero vocations for the past 3 years. Pell asked my mate whether he wanted to be posted to a Sydney parish as he was getting older and had been fighting all alone for two decades. Barney said that he couldn't possibly leave his parish so Pell sent a curate from Sydney to help out as Barney's parish is bursting at the seams with Catholics who travel for hours on a Sunday just to attend masses in his parish.

Cardinal Pell intends to move a Monsigneur who is an strong theological academic and administrator experience, plus a few young Parish Priests with good theological formation, up to Brisbane within a year or so. He will re-establish the traditional Catholic Church in the State, once more and sweep away the frauds who are still 'making up the numbers' in the clergy there.

So to answer your question. Shop around and vote with your feet. When you find a decent parish tell your Catholic friends.

It would seem the result of NC having teachers like this was a dismal result in the 5th to 8th grade testing this year. According to the gov. elect, the reason for the scores being bad is that the test is "harder". I think it is because the school is so busy teaching about social programs, they don't teach a child to read, write, and add and subtract any more.

The foundation is the most important. Instead, they spend time in the early grades learning not to offend anyone, how to "share". No individuality, no challenge, no learning to be responsible.

But then the "tests" got sooo much harder...

AS far as I am concerned, the argument that children have so much more to do these days is bunk. There is a bit more history now then when I went to school...but the basics are the same. And it is the basics people should be concentrating on.

So while she teaches about McCain wanting to be in Iraq for about 100 more years, she failed to teach them about the electoral process. She should be neutral...but I am afraid that isn't going to happen.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the military kids in those classrooms were telling their parents what was going on. We'll never know if there were previous complaints unless the parents come forward. My experience working in different schools over the last 20 years is that the administration initially is pretty monolithic in their support of teaching staff. If complaints continue from different parents, the teacher might have to apologize or write a letter. Here in CA unless the teacher has molested students, it's rare that they're fired. It's also rare that they're caught red-handed on YouTube.

re: #246 Steve Rogers

California is essentially bankrupt, and I expect its bonds to be classified as junk within the next month. Ahnuld is talking about raising the sales tax -- I heard on the radio today that combined with the local sales taxes, the bite in LA County will be a bit more than 10%, Expect a lot of businesses to move out of state very shortly.

/Although I know this is serious shit we're dealing with here ... and Obama hasn't got the stones to do what needs to be done ... and McCain probably wouldn't have, either.

Oh, screw them. Unless we get to have a huge chunk of our national debt erased like we did for Iraq and are always pushed to do again and again for countries in Africa. Here's the quote:

EU leaders: World has 100 days to fix system
By AOIFE WHITE – 8 hours ago

BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) — European Union leaders backed a 100-day deadline for world's leading economies to decide urgent global finance reforms, French President Nicolas Sarkozy said Friday.

Sarkozy, who chaired a special meeting of EU nations, said the financial crisis and economic downturn required a quick deal on an overhaul at a Nov. 15 summit in Washington bringing together leaders of the world's 20 largest industrialized nations and emerging economies.

"We are in an economic crisis. We have to take this into account," Sarkozy said. "We have to react and we have no time to lose."

"I'm not going to take part in a summit where there is just talk for talk's sake," Sarkozy told reporters after talks between the heads of the EU's 27 nations. "We want to change the rules of the game in the financial world."

The EU is calling for a second global summit next spring to flesh out changes to the way the world economy is governed. They want to see far more supervision of big financial companies and are urging governments to jointly monitor them.

They want to prevent a repeat of the Wall Street excesses that caused havoc in markets worldwide — and are bringing emerging economies China, India and Brazil on board for talks on shaping a new world economic order.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said the Washington talks should be a "decisive moment for the world economy."

A text agreed by EU leaders says they want an early warning system that would watch for financial bubbles and prevent "world imbalances" — such as the swelling U.S. trade deficit.
They also suggest making the International Monetary Fund the world's financial watchdog, giving it more power to curb financial crises, with more money to aid countries in trouble.

I didn't get free gas yet.
I didn't get free money yet.
I didn't get free government cheese yet.
I still don't when I am supposed to start calling people comrade.

And I still don't have free medical care to treat this headache.

re: #257 Outrider

Anyone that hasn't read Obamas web site:

http://change.gov/agenda/economy/

should do so when the opportunity arises. He has a book written there that has expanded his Blueprint for Change and his promises. Don't know how this stuff is going to work out.

Probably not that well.

Congressional Democrats will overreach, as they are already doing. (House liberal Henry Waxman is moving to unseat fellow House liberal John Dingell -- who he doesn't find liberal enough -- from the Energy and Commerce committee.) This means tension with a President Obama, who may not be so eager to throw out his "bipartisan" image on Day One. Republicans can sit back to watch that fight.

Democrats also can't depend on President Bush to save them from themselves. All but one of Mr. Reid's 51 caucus members voted last year to proceed with legislation eliminating union secret ballots, and all 50 knew it would never become law. Mr. McConnell has his own list of vulnerable Democrats who he -- with the help of the business community -- will remind of the electoral consequences of enacting a measure hated by 80% of the country, according to polls. Maybe Nebraska's Ben Nelson, who hails from a right-to-work state, will vote to allow his constituents to be bullied by union thugs. Or, when it comes down to it, maybe not.

Mr. Obama and his party are meanwhile now the sole political proprietors of a major financial crisis. Revenues will contract, even as Mr. Obama promises tax cuts. That alone may temper ambitions on issues like health care, which Democrats may now have to approach piecemeal. But also expect to see the GOP rediscover a devotion to fiscal responsibility. Any Democratic proposal, for anything, will elicit howls of "deficit spending." Some Republicans are actually looking forward to January.

I wonder what kind of specialized training Lamont needed to figure that out?

Oh, he's sharp as a tack. I summed it up. He used a lot of big words and long sentences, all at 100 mph.

Not one word? Explore the possibility that he's a closet conservative. Do it gently and don't embarrass him in front of the kneeJERKs he has to work with.

Not a chance. When I say "Moonbat #1," I speak from experience. We used to talk politics, until I decided it was an unnecessary aggravation to discuss Topics On Which He Is Always Right. Now we have what we describe as a "mutual non-aggression pact," which is supposed to be sort of like "we don't discuss politics" but usually is more like "he slips in the shiv every so often and I pretend not to notice."

But he IS trying to be sensitive to my feelings at the moment, and I do genuinely appreciate that.

This blog and its owner--Charles Johnson, are among the handful of guardians who help the rest of us focus our attention on episodes like this. They are the Fourth Estate, as the old guards are toothless, larded curs now, totally abject and fawning at the feet of power, bribed and torpid and blind.

Freedom of information on internet, radio, and yes the one and only outlet on commercial television for our worldview at Fox News, is all that remains of the Fourth Estate. Without Charles, and Roger Simon, and Rush we would have the bland and smooth deceptions, the bludgeoning of propaganda, that constitutes the rest of media. Imagine the terrible acceleration in abuses such as this bullying Stalinist "education" session. Sunlight is the best disinfectant. We are all along the watchtower, like Orwell's "rough men." Without our eyes and ears and shouts of warning--all hope of resisting our enemies will vanish.

I always thought it was a teacher's job to teach children how to think. That is what I call education.

In this case, this woman seems to think a teacher's job is to teach children WHAT to think. That is what I call indocrination.

My left moonbat sister school teacher can shove it.

Did folks notice the way this mean woman ambushed the kids? She demanded, in encouraging but authoritarian voice, "Come on! Raise your hands!" Implying, it's safe and also it's mandatory to share. She betrayed their trust in her as an adult "safe" person, she betrayed decency and is a mean person. Just mean. Excusing herself without remorse, oh, and the little girl's parents are "okay" with this bully? Nah. Their kid probably begged them not to make a fuss, that is what most kids do--they fear reprisals, they hope it will all go away.

I hate this bullying leftist culture, it makes me vomit.

I double checked with my students today - 5 weeks on Electing the President and they didn't know who I supported -- until I told them AFTER the election.

I will wear that as a badge of honor.

I did the same thing with my students - cant' say the same for some of my colleagues. One teacher told her students that Palin was a lier.

Sarah should agree to 0prah- but make her haul her ass to Alaska for it.

That's a hell of a good idea. But don't just make Oprah come to Alaska for the interview; arrange to hold the interview in the diner of a work camp at a drilling rig or on a pipeline construction site. Make sure the cameras see the type of conditions that the workers in the industry endure, so that lard-ass TV viewers in the lower 48 (or is that 56 now?) can watch the O's show. Sure, the guys and gals in the oil patch get paid well for their trouble, but it takes a certain amount of guts to put up with the conditions of the job.

re: #332 Charles

Newt Gingrich wants to teach creationism in science classes.

I went to the link, and scanned through the article. That Adele Stan comes off as quite the moonbat. Even if she has quoted Gingrich correctly, I find myself having to ask: does Gingrich a) really want to teach Creationism in science classes, or b) or does he simply want to pander to the Creationists on the right, and buy their support with meaningless platitudes, or c) simply not know enough about science in general to understand that Creationism (and/or I.D.) is not and cannot be science.

Given the sorry state of education these days, (c) is a definite possibility. Apologies for the convoluted sentence structure.

I hope they fire her. As a professional educator, I know how important it is to never make a student feel bad about non-topic issues (it's another thing to get on them about things they should know and even then there's an appropriate approach -- humiliating a student is never right). Her comment about her father being in Iraq for 100 years, besides being an outright lie, was vicious and designed to hurt -- you could see that the poor girl was almost in tears. It was an assault on her personal life, which is none of the teacher's damn business.

If the superintendent gets any grief for doing his job (and I imagine he will from the marxist, military-hating NEA), I'm sure the 15K or so military families the school serves will stand behind him.

What I'd like to see is a public apology from the teacher.

The ridiculous, hateful teacher doesn't think she did anything wrong.

These people shouldn't be around our children.

Perhaps someone should create a database, like Ohio's online sexual predator repository, to identify these psychos /half serious snark
