Bill Ayers: Becoming a target of 'terrorist' attack

For the past few years, I have gone about my business, hanging out with my kids and, now, my grandchildren, taking care of our elders (they moved in as the kids moved out), going to work, teaching and writing. And every day, I participate in the never-ending effort to build a powerful and irresistible movement for peace and social justice.

In years past, I would now and then – and often unpredictably – appear in the newspapers or on TV, sometimes with a reference to Fugitive Days, my 2001 memoir of the exhilarating and difficult years of resistance against the American war in Vietnam.

Then came this political season.

"The Office of the President Elect."

Please, please tell me I'm living in a nightmare. Please pinch me and wake me up.

Please tell me that just because so many Americans were too lazy and dumb to find out just what a disaster this man would be as President, doesn't mean that the rest of us have to commit national suicide along with them.

Why can't they have their President, and we'll have ours? We'll see which one our military will listen to.

I paid $1.96 in MN. Always strikes me as strange the gas is relatively cheap here. Each month I drive from the Twin Cities to Detroit and back and it's amazing how much more gas costs in Chicago and Detroit. Maybe they use their gas tax to keep crime rates low.

We have got to stand by the Poles. I think in case of hostilities the Poles will manage with fierce determination.
They remember the Katyn Forest.
They remember the battle of Warsaw [1920] and we should too, for that was the military defeat of communism in Europe.

Yes, we have to stand with them. That said, we have to also acknowledge that we may not be able to get much out of that ABM site if the Russians decide its a threat. Putin does have the conventional firepower to take out such a site in Poland if he is willing to pay the price. We should build the site but shouldn't count on it too much.

How do you figure that? Should the South have been allowed to tear the nation asunder?

I'm from the north, so I do not presume to speak for the southern man. However, the federal government was founded on protecting states rights, and the Declaration of Independence guaranteed that the governed had the right to dissolve the governmental contract. But when the southern states tried to enforce their right as sovereign states to choose their own form of government, Washington DC instructed them through force of arms that it is the federal government that decides what states can and cannot do.

As for your question whether the South should be "allowed" to "tear the nation asunder (sic)", I believe the Founding Fathers would have tried another compromise rather than going to war, but the war would have been fought inevitably since slavery is not tolerated in the modern world, to our credit.

Except that ending slavery was never a part of the Civil War until after the war was over and history was being re-written.

In terms of initial war aims, I agree, but that did change during the war, when Lincoln issued the "while we are at it" Emancipation Proclamation to free the slaves in states still in rebellion as of 1 Jan 1863, IIRC.

There is some truth to what you say. I would however note that people who made the decision to secede from the Union did not really represent the people of their states in the full sense. As their states contained slaves, they were seceding to protect their ability to deprive others of their freedom. Such a secession cannot be regarded as legitimate.

The Atomic museum in ABQQ was very kool. Probably the only museum left in the world that actually has a display that says the bombing of Japan was a good and necessary thing.

That place was just too cool. You drive onto the Air Force base and have to stop and pick up a pass. The AF security guard (Full dress uniform, with white gloves... my cousin would have married him on the spot) told us to drive down the street for about a mile and turn Right onto Colorado Avenue. Keep driving until we saw the plane on the right, that was it. No further explanation.

A plane on an Air Force Base? So we drove down the road, turned right onto Colorado, and about a mile later... a B-52. Couldn't miss it.

Any concessions made to a man like that need to be accompanied by parallel, verifiable concessions from him. Anything less and he'll just go right one pushing you and taking from you. I think that's a bit of an exaggeration. The slave issue was being bitterly contested even before the war, and it was mostly the slave states that left the Union. I'm sure many Abolitionists joined the fight under the belief that the defeat of the South would mean the end of slavery.

re: #269 Lee Coller

I don't think anything will happen nationwide, but here in Illinois it is getting nasty. Blagohair, Daley's puppet-in-charge, has closed most of the public hunting lands to hunting. Then, i get this in my inbox:

Illinois Wildlife Funds in Jeopardy
In an unprecedented move to reduce Illinois’ budget deficits, the Illinois Legislature passed a bill authorizing Gov. Rod Blagojevich to sweep $18 million from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, including $9.25 million from dedicated conservation funds, which are primarily generated through the sale of hunting and fishing licenses, stamps and permits.

The bill authorizing the sweeps is designed to restore more than $220 million in state budget cuts that reduced services and closed some state parks. However, hunting and outdoor groups have come out saying that sweeps from dedicated conservation funds would devastate Illinois’ natural resources by crippling the already budget-ravaged DNR and harm Illinois’ hunting and fishing industries, which pump more than $1.2 billion into the state’s economy.

Under federal guidelines, the sweeps would also compromise federal funds and could be illegal. Both state and federal law prohibits the use of funds raised through license, stamps and permit sales from being used for any purpose other than for wildlife and fish restoration and management.

“Hunters and anglers pay for the opportunity to hunt and fish by purchasing licenses, stamps and permits, as well as through the federal tax on firearms, ammunition and sporting equipment,” said Kent Adams, National Wild Turkey Federation regional biologist for Illinois. “These funds are dedicated for conservation, wildlife management and public land acquisition, and sweeping them would cause Illinois to lose $15 million in federal funds that would be used for wildlife conservation. That loss would continue annually, until the swept funds were restored, so this action does nothing to solve the state budget deficit.”

Conservation and hunting organizations banded together to request Gov. Blagojevich veto SB 790, but on Oct. 7, 2008, Gov. Blagojevich quietly signed it into law. Now, many are contacting the Governor’s office asking that he not harm the future of conservation and hunting in Illinois, or the state’s economy, by sweeping dedicated sportsmen’s funds.

Call the Governor’s office at (217) 782-6830 and request that Gov. Blagojevich not fix the looming budget crisis by sweeping wildlife funds, which will hurt the future of Illinois’ wildlife and economy.
Potentially affected conservation funds:
• Illinois Habitat Fund
• Wildlife and Fish Fund
• Fish and Wildlife Endowment Fund
• Illinois Habitat Endowment Trust Fund
• State Migratory Waterfowl Fund
• State Pheasant Fund "

I don't hunt, but all this deeply concerns me. It's the sportsman that have maintained so much of our wildlife and natural lands. The greenies don't have a clue.

Except that ending slavery was never a part of the Civil War until after the war was over and history was being re-written.

Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. The catch is that it didn't actually free any slaves -- it was only in effect for those states "in rebellion," who weren't going to acknowledge his authority in any case.

A lot of the soldiers who volunteered for the Union army were motivated to volunteer to free the slaves.

I wonder if he thought I was going to just go fetal in a corner or something!

Hey, I just about did.

I felt kind of stupid about it because I know how so many lefties acted after Bush won re-election, but this is something so fundamentally different. If it had been Hillary I would have shrugged it off easily. She's liberal, sure, but she's no idiot. I think she would have been much stronger than Bill on defense, and I don't see her trying to push forward some kind of utopian 'we're gonna change the world' vision. Plus she wouldn't have created so much division. If Hillary had been nominated and won I would have felt like America was still America.

With Obama I feel like we have made a very dangerous shift toward becoming something very, very unlike the America I grew up in and the America the founding fathers envisioned. True, we've already moved quite a ways from their vision, but I always felt we could find our way back. But with Obama's election, for the first time, I feel like we're in grave and urgent danger of losing our way for good.

Second student says science teacher burned his arm

A second student said his eighth-grade science teacher burned a cross on his arm with an electrical device, but that he didn't tell his parents or complain about the incident.

Simon Souhrada, 17, testified that Freshwater used a high-voltage static-electricity device to burn a cross on his arm four years ago. But "it never even registered with me as being anything, really," he said.

Souhrada also recalled overhearing Freshwater tell a group of students, "Catholics aren't Christians."

Auto industry bailout.

No where do I see the part where Unions must go away, or an agreement to be responsible for efficiency and doing what is best economically for the company (GM, Ford).

I have worked in the auto industry for 20 years, in IT and design engineering. For the last 4 years, as a short-term contractor. For this, I went to college and got a degree in Mathematics?

Screw that, those jobs ain't comin' back to Michigan. My primary income now is from the Zionist Emporium and I am working on a series of historical articles, maybe I'll write a book. For years I have been fooling around on a spoof of the "Da Vinci Code" genre. It can't possibly be any worse than the crap that makes the best seller list.

I'm not against Chicago getting the Olympics. But we don't need a Democratic governor to do that. And if Daley is distracted, so much the better. With Acorn involved. I truly wonder if Illinois is lost.

Maybe, maybe not. There's been enough shennanigans in Cook County for decades, and we managed to elect people in spite of them. I'm a little pissed at the Dem wins in Will County this time, but that's all coattails. Coattails they won't have in 2010. They'll, instead, have massive buyer's remorse.

The Big Zero will live up to his pre-election icongraphy as president. He will be the worst president we've ever had. It's possible, if some people get their act together, and win in 2010, he may be the first impeached and removed from office, if he's bad enough. Obama is more Nixonian than Nixon, and as far as I can see, incompetent as Carter.

The Civil War was not fought because Yankees were overbearing and uppity or because Southerners talked funny or refused to be subjugated or some such nonsense. "States Rights" was a convenient rally cry and euphemism for the perpetuation of slavery. Period.

Southerners were pushing for an improved political position with the expansion of slavery into the the territories in protection of their immoral society. Nothing more nor less.

Unimaginable numbers of good people were slaughtered to make men free. It is wrong to try to write it any other way, though here we are a century and a half later and folks continue to say that fight was not about slavery.

It most certainly was.

Exercising your right is also a great responsibility. Anyone who misuses a firearm gives another bit of ammunition to the anti-gun crowd.

Joining the NRA is a great step--only if you actually take them up on their training classes. Don't add to the mis-stereotype of "clinging to their guns and religion'''

I've received so many lectures about gun safety in my lifetime, I could recite them in my sleep. And I don't shoot.

Lincoln did not approve of slavery. He felt it would die a natural death. On that he was proven wrong as the South pushed the issue beyond repair - and a war was fought.

That Didn't Take Long... Obama Surrenders To Russia

Earlier this week Russia warned the US about the planned US missile defense pact with Poland.

Video:

Today Obama surrendered.

He may not be in office but Barack Obama already backed down on his commitment to Poland to go ahead with a missile defense system.
The BBC and LGF reported:

US President-elect Barack Obama has not given a commitment to go ahead with plans to build part of a US missile defence system in Poland, an aide says.

He was speaking after Polish President Lech Kaczynski's office said a pledge had been made during a phone conversation between the two men.

But Mr Obama's foreign policy adviser, Denis McDonough, denied this.

Russia opposes the US scheme and has announced plans to deploy missiles on Poland's border as a counter-measure.

I am afraid we are going to see more of this in the years to come.

I just got a email update about that and can't find it to link the source. The lawsuit was settled between the Second Amendment Foundation? and NOLA. I can't remember the details, but the 2nd Amendment won.

What I can't figure out is why people truly thing the confiscated guns (in any situation) are truly going to be melted down or whatever. There's too much money there for all of them to be destroyed. Not all cops are good cops.

___
Lately there have been a lot of court "evidence" missing from storage in New Orleans [especially cash money]. That's another excuse they give for not returning the guns.
Having armed citizens prevented a lot of looting and there was a LOT OF LOOTING. Favorite gun was a shotgun.

Good point. Suppose there was no slave trade, no slaves anywhere in the South. What, indeed, would have they fought about? What would have gotten tensions that high.

Slavery was our legacy from Europe, and many Africans were complicit. The Arabs had it then and they have it now. Why some Africans think Islam is a not slave related religion is beyond me.

Our real guilt is Jim Crow. Of course, once slavery ended they were free to leave the area. If no other place was better - then what's the point of blaming America?

No, those factors were peripheral. Those issues would have been subject for lively debate in the Congress but would not have triggered the 4 plus years of brutal, open warfare. It was slavery and its press for expansion that spilled all that blood.

After Push for Obama, Unions Seek New Rules

Labor’s No. 1 priority is a piece of legislation called the Employee Free Choice Act, also known as the card-check bill. The bill would give workers the right to join a union as soon as a majority of employees at a workplace signed cards saying they wanted one. Business groups have attacked the legislation because it would take away employers’ right to insist on holding a secret-ballot election to determine whether workers favored unionization.

And they began to think long and hard about it in the late Roman Empire and early middle ages. Western Europe, once Christianized, became the first significant society in history to abandon chattel slavery.
It was only in the early modern era, when the desire for colonial labor provided a terrible temptation, that Western Europeans reverted to accepting it.
And then, at last they repented and abolished it entirely.

For a while I was just irritated and thought "you're just jealous."
I got over that and now I'm just sickened.

Glad you got over "that". What I think made you mad, is the same thing that's making me mad. TAKE DOWN THE POLITICAL SIGNS! The election is over. When Bush won, our sign was down the next day. There's two BHO signs on our street, one right across from us, and they're still up. Bad enough I had to look at them every day during the campaign, but it's over, now take them down! I think there use to be city ordinances for this, but god knows if there's any now.

There is another initiative underway by Obama's Union friends to eliminate secret ballots for Union elections. The thugs get to go around with a clipboard and ask each employee whether or not they want to join the union. Even George McGovern has spoken out against that idea as being undemocratic.

They're good. The SP 101 basically replaced the Security Six. A very good, reliable, and concealable revolver. The Girlfriend is looking at buying a .38 either late this year or early next. I'm trying to encourage her to get a .357 even if she never fires anything out of it other than .38s.

Keeps the option open.

So say the mental titans who voted for Obama because he's for hope ...and change...and because "I just like Him" (actual comment from one of my clients, as I was counseling him about the five-figure increase in his tax bill that is likely as a result of the President-elect).

What he didn't tell them was that they were really McCains positions. If people thought they liked McCain's policies, but they liked the hopey changiness of Obama. Never mind that his positions are going to wreck the Country.

Astute comment. And now a depressing thought:

The top 50% of us pay almost all of the federal income tax. Therefore, it's up to the half of us to continue to innovate and work hard to pick up for the slackers. And as vote-whoring politicians continue to push "innovative" government-based solutions for "poverty" (what a nebulus term; a hundred years ago, a third of the country didn't even have indoor plumbing), I suspect those of us who produce will continue to be less representative as a voting bloc, thereby continuing the inexorable slide to the left.

One aspect of Obama breaking the color barrier is that he is a refined, educated individual, and doesn't resemble anything close to a hip hopper or a fiery preacher or a first round draft pick. If he replaces them sorts as the idol and role model for African American kids, the USA will be better off.

I wonder if any of these ‘gimme-gimme’ idiots ever thought this through? Remember the last half of the sentence? “…according to his needs.” Hey – you don’t need that crossover vehicle – your family will fit nicely into a mid-sized sedan. And you only need one car – use public transportation. Now, about that 5 bedroom, 4 bath house with the 3 car garage and backyard pool… oh, and lawns are also a huge waste of water. How many kids do you have? Two of the same sex? Then you only need a two bedroom condo.
Change!

From Eye on the UN:

UN Releases New Draft of the Durban II Final Document:

Israel is guilty of apartheid, crimes against humanity and genocide

Hot off the press. The latest effort in fomenting anti-semitism, delegitimizing the Jewish state, defeating the effort to end terrorism, destroying free speech and manufacturing Muslim victims of Western human rights atrocities. Also known as, the Durban II Outcome Document.

The UN Preparatory Committee for "Durban II", the Durban Review Conference scheduled for Geneva in April 2009, has just released the latest version of the "outcome document" which is scheduled to be adopted at the Conference itself. As described by the UN Secretariat, the draft reflects the current state of negotiations. And it isn't a pretty sight.

There are four main features of Durban II and its assault on human rights in the name of human rights.

(1) The Demonization of Israel and of Jewish Self-Determination - Modern Antisemitism

(2) Attacking Freedom of Expression

(3) Attempting to Thwart Efforts to End Terrorism

(4) The Victimhood Game - Alleged Discrimination Against Muslims

Why Did The Chicken Cross The Road?

SARAH PALIN: Before it got to the other side, I shot the chicken, cleaned and dressed it, and had chicken burgers for lunch.

BARACK OBAMA: The chicken crossed the road because it was time for a change! The chicken wanted change!

JOHN MC CAIN: My friends, that chicken crossed the road because he recognized the need to engage in cooperation and dialogue with all the chickens on the other side of the road.

HILLARY CLINTON: When I was First Lady, I personally helped that little chicken to cross the road. This experience makes me uniquely qualified to ensure right from Day One! that every chicken in this country gets the chance it deserves to cross the road. But then, this really isn't about me.

GEORGE W. BUSH: We don't really care why the chicken crossed the road. We just want to know if the chicken is on our side of the road, or not. The chicken is either against us, or for us. There is no middle ground here.

DICK CHENEY: Where's my gun?

COLIN POWELL: Now to the left of the screen, you can clearly see the satellite image of the chicken crossing the road.

BILL CLINTON: I did not cross the road with that chicken. What is your definition of chicken?

AL GORE: I invented the chicken.

JOHN KERRY: Although I voted to let the chicken cross the road, I am now against it! It was the wrong road to cross, and I was misled about the chicken's intentions. I am not for it now, and will remain against it.

AL SHARPTON: Why are all the chickens white? We need some black chickens.

DR. PHIL: The problem we have here is that this chicken won't realize that he must first deal with the problem on this side of the road before it goes after the problem on the other side of the road. What we need to do is help him realize how stupid he's acting by not taking on his current problems before adding new problems.

OPRAH: Well, I understand that the chicken is having problems, which is why he wants to cross this road so bad. So instead of having the chicken learn from his mistakes and take falls, which is a part of life, I'm going to give this chicken a car so that he can just drive across the road and not live his life like the rest of the chickens.

ANDERSON COOPER, CNN: We have reason to believe there is a chicken, but we have not yet been allowed to have access to the other side of the road.

NANCY GRACE: That chicken crossed the road because he's guilty! You can see it in his eyes and the way he walks.

PAT BUCHANAN: To steal the job of a decent, hardworking American.

MARTHA STEWART: No one called me to warn me which way that chicken was going. I had a standing order at the Farmer's Market to sell my eggs when the price dropped to a certain level. No little bird gave me any insider information.

DR SEUSS: Did the chicken cross the road? Did he cross it with a toad? Yes, the chicken crossed the road, but why it crossed I've not been told.

ERNEST HEMINGWAY: To die in the rain, alone.

GRANDPA: In my day we didn't ask why the chicken crossed the road. Somebody told us the chicken crossed the road, and that was good enough.

BARBARA WALTERS: Isn't that interesting? In a few moments, we will be listening to the chicken tell, for the first time, the heart warming story of how it experienced a serious case of molting, and went on to accomplish its lifelong dream of crossing the road.

ARISTOTLE: It is the nature of chickens to cross the road.

JOHN LENNON: Imagine all the chickens in the world crossing roads together, in peace.

BILL GATES: I have just released eChicken 2008, which will not only cross roads, but will lay eggs, file your important documents, and balance your checkbook. Internet Explorer is an integral part of eChicken 2008. This new platform is much more stable and will never crash or need to be rebooted.

ALBERT EINSTEIN: Did the chicken really cross the road, or did the road move beneath the chicken?

COLONEL SANDERS: Did I miss one?

I think the best way to "fix" the economy right now is to restore investor confidence. And then the all-important consumer confidence will follow. How to do it is the real question. You could start by eliminating the capital gains tax. At the current share prices, that might just cause a flood of money back into the market.

I believe in the Constitution, but I also believe respect is earned, and just because the bastard holds a respected Office doesn't mean I'll be granting the scum any portion of respect I'd normally use to describe the Office and person holding the title.

You can call the SOB whatever you wish, but even after Jan. 20, he'll still be a Marxist inspired smooth talking SOB to me! Fuck him, and the bugs he rode into office on!

re: #640 Mich-again

One aspect of Obama breaking the color barrier is that he is a refined, educated individual, and doesn't resemble anything close to a hip hopper or a fiery preacher or a first round draft pick. If he replaces them sorts as the idol and role model for African American kids, the USA will be better off.

I couldn't disagree more. He does resemble the hip hopper, the fiery preacher and first round draft pick.

The hip hopper idolizes violent criminals, Obama was mentored by domestic terrorists like Ayers and idolizes foreign terrorist PLO spokesmen Rashid Khalidi.

The fiery preacher teaches hatred and scorn for white people and America. Obama was a member of racist Trinity United Church of Christ for 20 years, donated $20,000 to them, had their racist, rabidly anti-American preacher marry him, baptise his children and has named him as his spirtual and moral compass.

The first round draft pick thinks he is eminently entitled to granduer, regardless of experience. This half-term senator with zero executive experience and not a single piece legislation to his name has embraced the highest office in the land as his presumed right since he made his keynote address at the 2004 Democratic convention.

This man is one of the worst role models for young black people I can imagine.
