RIP, Bali Bombing Victims

Images | Sun, Nov 9, 2008 at 9:27:22 am PST

El Marco has some great photos from Bali, including powerful images of the memorial for the victims of the Islamic terror attack in 2005: Bali Bombing Victims, R.I.P.

The monument’s design contains dragons and fierce spirits which envelop and protect the dead from evil. These are very powerful Balinese Hindu symbols which not only represent, but are believed to be real physical beings. Here they protect the dead of many religions and nations.

The plaza, with an area of 7500 square meters, is equipped with giant metal umbrellas (closed, in foreground) that open and close mechanically. The only other ones like this are in Medina.

If my skin crawls any more, it'll come right off my body.

“The Wahabis profess a life of exceeding austerity, and what they practice themselves they rigorously enforce on others. They hold it as an article of duty, as well as of faith, to kill all who do not share their opinions and to make slaves of their wives and children. Women have been put to death in Wahabi villages for simply appearing in the streets. It is a penal offense to wear a silk garment. Men have been killed for smoking a cigarette, and as for alcohol, the most energetic supporter of the temperance cause in this country falls far behind them. Austere, intolerant, well armed, and bloodthirsty, in their own regions the Wahabis are a distinct factor which must be taken into account, and they have been, and still are, very dangerous to the holy cities of Mecca and Medina” - Winston Churchill, House of Commons, 1921, The Culture and Glories of the Arab Race

A very beautiful memorial. May the victims rest in eternal peace.

10 alegrias  Sun, Nov 9, 2008 9:37:28am

Deterrence & eternal vigilance are what is needed in this fight. Dragons & symbols, not very helpful.

Lighting candles, singing kumbaya & giving "peace a chance" are not an offense. (Thought 52 million Americans want to truly believe it).

re: #22 MandyManners

How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property—either as a child, a wife, or a concubine—must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men. Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities. Thousands become the brave and loyal soldiers of the Queen: all know how to die. But the influence of the religion paralyzes the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science—the science against which it had vainly struggled—the civilization of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilization of ancient Rome.

Nice work El Marco. Very powerful presentation as well.
What some have come to call "The Long War" must go on. We must rid the earth of terrorist killers. My hope (Hope!) is that President-elect Obama continues the work of George Bush so that we do not have to build more memorials. If we let up now we will just give the terrorists a chance to regroup and come back stronger. Then we will have to change (Change!) the name of the WoT again. To "The Very Long War".

I don't have it, alas.

Not that it would make any difference even if I did. A generation that can elect Obama--in other words, a generation which does not remember Carter's presidency at all, barely remembers Ronald Reagan, thinks that "socialism" is either "cool" or "that thing that ended 20 years ago when the Soviet Union disappeared" will almost certainly respond to something as quaint as a Churchill quote with, "Who?"

And, they're lead by the quislings in the MFM.

WHO PROTECTS THE LIVING ?

Somewhat related:

The Balinese are famous for their ferocity in war when provoked. The term to run amok comes from the Balinese. It means to go absolutely violent in battle. When not provoked, they are the most peaceful people in the world. When most of the Indonesian archipelago was colonized by the Dutch, Bali alone remained independent for centuries because the Dutch East India Company refused to mess with them.

How much more before they're provoked? When the Jemaah Islamiah and their supporters take every last thing they have?

Makes me wonder if East Timor was just a dress rehearsal.

I don't see how that's philosophically possible for him or anyone surrounding him. I don't care what the circumstances are including our being attacked. We were attacked under Clinton and he managed not to do anything.

Unfortunately, those who refuse to learn from history are destined to repeat it. It's not unlike trying to provide life experience advice to a teenager - most of the time they are unwilling to accept it until they have learned themselves directly the impact of their decisions. If they don't feel the pain, then they don't accept the risks or consequences. The problem is - this can be a very expensive way to learn....in more ways than one.

On a quasi-serious note, the Tupperware which resides in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York is...melting. The plastic apparently becomes unstable after 30 or 40 years, and decays. The clear plastic bubble on the front of their Sikorsky helicopter is also decaying, and has now clouded to the point where it is practically opaque.

Considering that I--probably like most here--grew up on scare stories about how terrible plastics are because they "last forever," I find it highly amusing that the Perpetual Pollution of Plastics turns out to be a myth, and that plastics are far more volatile and fragile than metal, wood, etc.

Shouldn't confuse deforming, discoloring, and such as actually biodegrading. Biodegrading is when something reverts to basic molecules such as carbon, carbon dioxide, nitrogen....where it can be reused. Helicopter glass is polycarbonate and it does discolor when exposed to UV light (due to the aromatic ring structure from the raw material Bisphenol A, that it is made from). So at some point you can't see through it but it will take thousands of years for it to actually break down completely.

Oh, believe me, I know. I've mentioned many times to people whose memories might be a bit hazy: we're still living with the consequences of Jimmah's incompetence.

That was one of the main reasons I cried so hard after CBBHO won.

If you will recall, during the campaign Obadim was a bit critical of Bush/McCain for taking their eye off Afganistan to invade Iraq, as our real enemy was Osama. He said that he knew how to handle Osama.

I, for one, am fully confident in a quick resolution to this whole bwahahahaha.

Sorry.

I, for one, am fully confident *snigger, snort*.

Mercy. Please excuse.

Whew. I may have unshipped a rib there.

Charles, the Memorial is for the victims of the first bombings in 2002, although it may contain the victims names of the 2005 bombings, I'm not sure, but it is definitely 2002, not 2005.

As a matter of fact, I have seen color films from 1929. "Rio Rita," starring Wheeler and Woolsey, and "Whoopee," starring Eddie Cantor and Ethel Shutte, are both two-strip Technicolor films from 1929.

I believe "King of Jazz," starring Paul Whiteman and his band (also 2-strip Technicolor), is also from 1929. The "Sweeping the Clouds Away" finale from Broadway Melody of 1929 is also two-strip Technicolor, in the right prints.

When was Birth of a Nation filmed?

I think you can go even earlier than that to find some hand-tinted films but I'm drawing a blank at the moment. The mind can only absorb so many pastry disasters before it collapses itself.

However, Buzz, I love Paul Whiteman and offer you (and anyone else, of course) this site for a vast collection of terrific tunes all or most in public domain and downloadable. Not just PW.

Think about the effects on our kids in 30 years.

Jimmy Carter had this habit of informing our enemies about us and our allies' military secrets, e.g. US stealth bombers in the 1970's and Israel's nuclear weapon capabilities last year. I wonder what Carter's heir apparent Barack Obama plans to divulge to our enemies over the next years or decades.

Do people who voted for Obama have any idea what they've done to this country and to this world?

Spider Mensch, believe brother, believe. The only reason we have a Marine Corps today is the American people WANT a Marine Corps. Yes, even most liberals. Otherwise we would have been gone long ago.

hey
maybe the world , like Obama, will see real "change".

A list and picture of victims of the Bali bombing

So many.

And the rabid dogs who did this were laughing up until the end.

113 el2995  Sun, Nov 9, 2008 11:24:41am

Great article and photos. We visited Bali for 5 days last year, though we did not make it to Kuta to see the memorial; most of our time was spent in and around Ubud, but we were able to spend the late afternoon and evening of our last day in-country at Jimbaran Beach enjoying a medley of a balmy sunset, grilled fresh seafood and Bintang Beer. The Balinese are among some of the most warmest and friendly people I've met during my travels in Southeast Asia, and I sincerely hope that they are able to maintain their soul, spirituality and way of life in the face of the threat of increasing Muslim immigration.

I'm planning a trip to Bali this winter. I have to see it before the island transforms into an Islamic hotbed like the rest of Indonesia. I'll be taking lots of pictures, and if I capture anything that might be of interest to Lizards I'll be sure to share.

Admittedly I'm in a very bad mood today--my cake just collapsed--but seriously, do you think Barry has any intention of fighting any war? I don't see how that's philosophically possible for him or anyone surrounding him. I don't care what the circumstances are including our being attacked. We were attacked under Clinton and he managed not to do anything.

Barney Fwank has sworn a 25% cut in military spending. They are looking to bind us, gag us and cut us off at the knees balls.

There, fixed that for ya!

Just out of curiosity, why did they hand the bodies back to the families of these terrorist douchebags? I for one think that they should have been buried in unmarked graves or burned and their bones left to the dogs. Why make martyrs?

Depending on how long you plan to be there ... rent scooters and get off of the "ring road" ... go thru the rice paddies on the dikes and get into the country villages.
There you will find Bali.

Dress very casual - you will get the lowest price that way. There are 3 price tiers in Bail. One for the Japanese tourists - the highest (the Balinese smile and take their money but haven't forgotten WWII). Next for general tourists and finally the lowest tier for "hippies".

I was first there in '66 and lived at Kuda for 6 months back in '75 - just before the building boom. It was heaven.

Late again. :(

It is truly saddening that we have not yet completed a memorial for our fallen on 9/11.

Flight 93 memorial cannot be completed because.....drumroll please...they continue to insist that it is in the shape of a CRESCENT and that it's number of fatalities includes the terrorists.

For information on this atrocity please see: [Link: errortheory.blogspot.com...]

- that is what the Russians do. By Russian law, the bodies of dead terrorists cannot be delivered back to the families but must be destroyed and disposed of at an undisclosed location. They don’t execute death sentences anymore, so this is only for dead suicide terrorists and such.

124 Ward Cleaver  Sun, Nov 9, 2008 2:16:42pm

I wish they'd bury the recently-executed bombers in the landfill.

125 Cutty Sark  Sun, Nov 9, 2008 2:18:17pm

They were always seen as martyrs . If Australia hadn't been so close and the entire world watching , I doubt they'd be executed at all . And the way "pardons " were issued to celebrate religious holidays , one more could have bought them out of the death sentence altogether .
Go to any Indonesian blog or islamic blog and you'll see , even among those who wont argue the execution , an underlying current of the notioin that some sort of injustice is occurring by their execution .
having sdaid that , let me qualify it by saying , that sentiment is not held by the Balinese Hindus .

126 Bob Dedmon  Sun, Nov 9, 2008 3:58:47pm

When I first looked at the title I misread it and thought you were referring to the bombers (my bad)...for them I give you RIH (Roast in Hell). I haven't heard of any unrest over there since the executions...good on them. Maybe they can/will get beyond this foolishness (I'm not holding my breath though).

127 baligeek  Sun, Nov 9, 2008 6:11:39pm

Alegrias,
The Balinese don't rely on Barong alone. There were many missing muslim bakso venders in the days after the bombing and their cart are probably still being found in river beds. The Balinese can, and have, kill with a passion when threatened as shown by the 80,000 communists killed in 1965-66. Everyone, even grandma, carries a big rice knife.
