Plans Under Way for 'Obama Day'

Politics | Sun, Nov 9, 2008 at 11:45:26 am PST

Remember when presidents had to actually lead and accomplish things before they had national holidays named after them?

Planning under way for Obama holiday.

Plans are being made to promote a national holiday for Barack Obama, who will become the nation’s 44th president when he takes the oath of office Jan. 20.

“Yes We Can” planning rallies will be at 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. every Tuesday at the downtown McDonald’s restaurant, 1100 Kansas Ave., until Jan. 13. The goals are to secure a national holiday in Obama’s honor, to organize celebrations around his inauguration and to celebrate the 200th birthday of President Abraham Lincoln, who was born on Feb. 12 1809.

(Hat tip: Ethel.)

They sure picked a classy joint. I guess Obama hasn't gotten around to redistributing enough wealth to them so they could have it at the Sizzler.

It's wonderful we finally elected a black President, but why did it have to be this ass-clown?

And shouldn't the guy accomplish something other than getting elected before we start naming stuff after him?

I hope you are right.

Frankly, even if he acquitted himself nicely and became the greatest President in memory, his inherent modesty should keep him from feeling that he deserves a Holiday named after him when Washington and Lincoln have to share a day. If he thinks he does deserve a holiday at this early point, that will be an indication of what amount of honor he is really deserving of. Either way, the Obama Day never really happens, either because he balks at the idea out of a statesman-like sense of decorum and humbleness or because the idea isn't sanctioned by enough people to make it anything other than a joke. I'm thinking #2. But we'll see what his response is. I'm sure he'll be asked about it before it goes through.

capital or capitol
A capital is the town or city that is a country's seat of government: Berlin is now again the capital of Germany. A capitol is a statehouse in the USA, i.e. the building that houses a state's legislature: One of the USA's best known buildings is the Capitol, the meeting place of the Congress of the United States of America in Washington, DC, the US capital.

As Charles said, one would have to actually accomplish something before garnering a national holiday. They should consider sending a memo to the US Navy regarding naming a carrier after him.

Consider this however. Any national holiday means that the federal government is closed for business -- which is a good thing.

It may well do so, Charles, but I'm betting Obama would be too savvy to accept it, like Caesar with the crown. Not that I'm comparing Obama to Caesar or anything...

I think he's as aware as any other rational politician of just how pompous such an "honor" during his lifetime would be.

Which cabinet member gets to walk behind him and tell him, "Remember, thou art mortal" repeatedly?

If it gains any traction at all, we should demand that Ronald Reagan get a national holiday to honor the end of the Cold War and the collapse of communism. You know, based on actual achievements. They'd have to give such a proposal equal consideration if BOD was being taken even a little bit seriously, which would be enough to put both ideas down in a hurry.

Shortly after he fired me, he got caught in a monster lie to the VP of our division. He tried to tell him that a new project could be done in two weeks. You didn't think Husseini actually came up with anything original did you? The one speech he gave that I actually listened to was his speech on "racism" early on. Virtually every word was a quote or a paraphrase or a direct plagiarism of some other speech.

Very much so. You know that way of talking that liberals have, which sets our teeth on edge? Well, they can't hear it. The university is like working at a tannery, where the overpowering fumes are no longer noticeable to the people who work there evry day. They can't hear what I call the liberal accent. They don't notice that their vocabulary gives away their ideological background, that the authors of the books they have read are now speaking through them.

OT: I was reading an article on CNN about how all of Bush's Executive Orders are being reviewed right now by the Obama transition team. There's an underlying assumption in there: All of Bush's Executive Orders are flawed and need revoked until proven otherwise. How many military, or corporate lizards for that matter, ever had a new CO, Dept. Head, Sgt. or LPO who thought they'd change everything after relieving their predecessor? Has any of those transitions ever been seamless? How many of those transitions made the situation worse because of the incoming boss's arrogance or assumed infallibility? Starting from the 5th of Nov, there's only one word for the next few years: Chaos.

Obama said from the getgo that he would do this. He also stated that he had every intention of prosecuting President Bush for war crimes.

One thing Americans tend to dislike is people who put themselves on a pedestal. We tend to like seeing them get their comeuppance. And Obama being nominated for a Federal holiday without having accomplished anything beyond getting elected is likely to trigger that resentment and that desire for some comeuppance.

A capital is the town or city that is a country's seat of government: Berlin is now again the capital of Germany. It's kind of like if you know nothing about cars, and you bring your perfectly-functioning car to a shady mechanic. The mechanic tells you that you'll need to pay $5000 for a complete transmission overhaul, because the whole thing was about to fall out of your car and potentially result in a deadly crash that killed you. Gotta protect that brand, which Obama is in a big way. Still, just like any other brand, Obama's can be challenged and even toppled. When your whole reason for being is based on marketing, that's an ivory tower that is not very sturdy, trust me.

No, it is not. This is not an individual, it is a branch of an international company using the company's logo, trademark and reputation to push a political point of view. Since the individual branch has seen fit to involve the company as a whole, I am entitled to take action against the company as a whole.

Charles has a policy prohibiting posting anyone's phone number or email address, even if the person himself publicly put it on the internet. I learned this the hard way, but I think it makes sense. So your comment will probably be deleted.

Could you instead post a link to wherever you found these phone numbers?

I have a very close friend. She's been a liberal and Democrat all her life, she's the daughter of a respected attorney, she's a righteous person. We share the same faith, same Protestant tradition.

Last we she told me that one thing she really likes about Obama is his "dignity". Seeing this friend being this deluded saddened me tremendously. All I could say to her is that what she sees as dignity I see as total coldness of heart.

We have incredibly rough times ahead of us in this country.

Obama's dignity.

Barack Obama gets down with Snoop’s “Drop It Like Its Hot” or for his daughter, “Drop It Like A Sock.”

Hmm... must be a song like "The Wheels on the Bus" or Raffi's "Baby Beluga," yes?

"Drop It Like It's Hot"
(feat. Pharrell Williams)

[Intro]
Snooooooooooop..
Snooooooooooop..

[Chorus - Snoop Dogg]
When the pimp's in the crib ma
Drop it like it's hot
Drop it like it's hot
Drop it like it's hot
When the pigs try to get at ya
Park it like it's hot
Park it like it's hot
Park it like it's hot
And if a n*gga get a attitude
Pop it like it's hot
Pop it like it's hot
Pop it like it's hot
I got the rolly on my arm and I'm pouring Chandon
And I roll the best weed cause I got it going on

[Verse - Pharrell Williams]
Uh! I'm a nice dude, with some nice dreams
See these ice cubes, see these Ice Creams?
Eligible bachelor, million dollar boat
That's whiter than what's spilling down your throat
The Phantom, exterior like fish eggs
The interior like suicide wrist red
I can excercise you, this can be your Phys. Ed
Cheat on your man ma, that's how you get ahizzead
Killer wit the beat, I know killers in the street
Wit the steel that'll make you feel like Chinchilla in the heat
So don't try to run up on my ear talking all that raspy sh*t
Trying to ask me sh*t
When my n*ggaz fill ya vest they ain't gon pass me sh*t
You should think about it, take a second
Matter fact, you should take four B
And think before you f*ck wit lil skateboard P

[Chorus]

[Verse - Snoop Dogg]
I'm a gangsta, but y'all knew that
Da Big Bo$$ Dogg, yeah I had to do that
I keep a blue flag hanging out my backside
But only on the left side, yeah that's the Crip side
Ain't no other way to play the game the way I play
I cut so much you thought I was a DJ
[scratches] "two!" - "one!" - "yep, three!"
S-N double O-P, D-O double G
I can't fake it, just break it, and when I take it
See I specialize in making all the girls get naked
So bring your friends, all of y'all come inside
We got a world premiere right here, now get live!
So don't change the dizzle, turn it up a little
I got a living room full of fine dime brizzles
Waiting on the Pizzle, the Dizzle and the Shizzle
G's to the bizzack, now ladies here we gizzo

[Chorus]

[Verse - Snoop Dogg]
I'm a Bad Boy, wit a lotta ho's
Drive my own cars, and wear my own clothes
I hang out tough, I'm a real Bo$$
Big Snoop Dogg, yeah he's so sharp
On the TV screen and in the magazines
If you play me close, you're on a red beam
Oh you got a gun so you wanna pop back?
AK47 now n*gga, stop that!
Cement shoes, now I'm on the move
Your family's crying, now you on the news
They can't find you, and now they miss you
Must I remind you I'm only here to twist you
Pistol whip you, dip you then flip you
Then dance to this motherf*cking music we crip to
Subscribe n*gga, get yo issue
Baby come close, let me see how you get loose!

[Chorus]

[Outro]
Snooooooooooop.
Snooooooooooop..

Ahh. So glad my daughters are out of pre-school, if this is what Head Start has them listening to these days.

I was assuming chocolate. Is that racist?

Here's the recipe I am thinking of. Guaranteed nutritious enough to survive on, and bland enough not to offend anyone. (Which is why they use it in prisons as a disciplinary measure.)

Special Management Meal
Yield - Three Loaves

• 6 slices whole wheat bread, finely chopped
• 4 ounces imitation cheddar cheese, finely grated
• 4 ounces raw carrots, finely grated
• 12 ounces spinach, canned, drained
• 2 cups dried Great Northern Beans, soaked,
cooked and drained
• 4 tablespoons vegetable oil
• 6 ounces potato flakes, dehydrated
• 6 ounces tomato paste
• 8 ounces powdered skim milk
• 4 ounces raisins

Mix all ingredients in a 12-quart mixing bowl. Make sure all wet items are drained. Mix until stiff, just moist enough to spread. Form three loaves in glazed bread pans. Place loaf pans in the oven on a sheet pan filled with water, to keep the bottom of the loaves from burning. Bake at 325 degrees in a convection oven for approximately 45 minutes. The loaf will start to pull away from the sides of the bread pan when done.

This raises the unpleasant question of why Bush reached for the Executive Order so much, instead of taking his proposals to Congress. I'm similarly ticked that what few proposals he did send to Congress he allowed to be butchered with an "expiration date" once enacted. Especially when Repubs held both houses and there was popular support for bills involving tax cuts and the elimination of that abomination, the Inheritance Tax.

Did it work?

Yes, it did.

Of course, there was the time when I took my daughters to Italy. I had listened to the Berlitz tapes and was feeling pretty good. Went to the train station in Florence to get reservations for our ride back to Milan, and as I waited in line, I kept repeating to myself: "Vorrei dei prenotazione per il treno a Milano."

Got to the ticket counter, and the clerk was a little bald guy with glasses. I said, "Vorrei dei... dei... um..."

He said, "Scusi, Signore, but do you speak English?"

I admitted defeat. "Yes, I do," I said.

He replied, "This will go much faster if we do it in English."

At least I tried, dammit!

The Obama Day will occur on the Day of the Rapture.

The Decline and Fall of the America starts on January 20th, 2009.

Once Obama's social programs are instituted that will be the final death nil to the America fought, lived for and died for.

There are too few Red States to save the Union now. The blue states deserve what they voted for.

Now is the time for Israel to attack the mullahs and throw the middle east into chaos. I'm sure Bush will send our troops to the aid of the Israelites.

Some thoughts on the Republicans. They don't deserve to lead this country. I can forgive Reagan for a 4 trillion dollar deficit, but since then the deficit has grown to 11 trillion dollars. That other 7 trillion is the republicans fault who held power for 12 of the last 20 years.

What ever happened to smaller government? I'm going to have to change my party affiliation now. Anyone want to start a new political part called the Conservative party, one that excludes any former Republican who held office in the past. I always liked Gingrich's "Contract with America" pact. It held republican candidates accountable in writing for what they voted for.

And you President Bush: On September 12th 2001, America should have become impenetrable. So when the next islamic terrorist attack happens, I will not support sending our troops anywhere except home to deal with the islamic terrorists on American Soil.

Good stuff from Powerline:

The only news Barack Obama made in his first post-election press conference was when, in a classless moment, he falsely ridiculed Nancy Reagan for holding "seances" in the White House. He was then compelled to call her to apologize for what he termed his "careless remark."

It appears that Obama may have been careless again yesterday, with international consequences. He spoke with the President of Poland, Lech Kaczynski, on the telephone. Afterward, Kaczynski wrote that Obama "said that the missile-defense project would continue." The Obama camp then released a statement to the effect that Obama had said no such thing: "President Kaczynski raised missile defense but President-elect Obama made no commitment on it."

It's possible that President Kaczynski deliberately misquoted Obama, but that seems highly unlikely. It's much more probable that Obama indulged in his usual ambiguity, failed to choose his words carefully, and thereby conveyed a misleading impression.

Obama thinks he is a good talker, but he is often undisciplined when he speaks. He needs to understand that as President, his words will be scrutinized and will have impact whether he intends it or not. In this regard, President Bush is an excellent model; Obama should take a lesson from his example. Bush never gets sloppy when he is speaking publicly. He chooses his words with care and precision, which is why his style sometimes seems halting. In the eight years he has been President, it is remarkable how few gaffes or verbal blunders he has committed. If Obama doesn't raise his standards, he will exceed Bush's total before he is inaugurated.

The reason I quoted the whole thing is that it made me realize a huge danger: President-Elect Obama has made a campaign, certainly, perhaps a career of being all thing to all people. When he speaks, people hear what they already think.
It may be that this style of speech gave the President of Poland reason to believe that the missile shield was absolutely on track. No doubt it made the phone call go very smoothly. He won the Pole's vote.
But he is no Longer a State Senator or an American Senator. As much as I loath this truth, he is now (soon, anyway) truly "the one"--the leader of the free world.
When he speaks, it is not votes and popularity which matter. It is war and peace, life and death, Armageddon or not.
He just made the Polish President look like a fool. Being no fool, the Pole will not return the favor--he knows the way this works--large animals trample small ones when push comes to shove.
So President Kaczynski won't call Obama out on this. But have no doubt where it comes from. We'll see this again and again, until his handlers get him to kick the habit of being all things to all people. It may be a long time--it's all he has.

But when they were three? Raffi, and Sharon, Lois and Bram, and Peter, Paul and Mary all the way. The occasional Pete Seeger and Burl Ives thrown in. And when I say Pete Seeger and Peter, Paul and Mary, I mean "Way Down Yonder on the Yankity-Yank" and "Puff, The Magic Dragon."

Who in their right mind would be so oblivious as to play gangsta rap for a three-year-old?

How many times have we seen this out of Obama? This is why McCain, in the last debate, warned people to listen very carefully to what this man says, and the way he says it. "We'll look at that," does not mean he will do it. It means he'll "look at that," and do whatever the hell the left tells him he will do.

Granny,
In Spanish for eggs (it seems eggs are controversial in many western languages) you ask, if you want eggs, if there are eggs, not if someone has eggs, which would be the equivalent of asking someone if they have "balls."

One funny thing I witnessed was a friend talking to a Panamanian girl and she was having a glass of milk. He told her, because we always talk about "chupando una cerveza" which literally means, "to suck down a beer," that that he wanted to "chuparle la leche," a request that was innocent, he thought he said, "I want to drink your (that glass) of milk." She smacked him so hard he had to put his eyeballs back in his head.

Maybe so. However, you are thinking logically; those in favor of Obama are not.

It isn't politically risky at all. They control the whole shooting match. The only thing standing between total control of the US government by the Dems are two senate seats. And you are not really naive enough to believe that the playing field in any courthouse in the land is truly level are you?

That and the Bill of Rights.

Granny,
In Spanish for eggs (it seems eggs are controversial in many western languages) you ask, if you want eggs, if there are eggs, not if someone has eggs, which would be the equivalent of asking someone if they have "balls."

ONe of my friends was foolish enough to ask for nuts in a restaurant one night. Luckily the waiter was a cute young male. . . .

Roberts Rules don't apply in the UK. In the UK to table a discussion means to sit down and have the discussion. Here of course it means we won't talk about this right now - or maybe ever.

No, that's based on MLK's own quotes regarding the Vietnam War. The plagiarism was proven by a retroactive look at speeches written by other clergy and social activists of the time. The FBI wiretap story admittedly is hearsay but the hookers angle has been corroborated by former associates of his. At dusk we will sing the leaders song..Obama Superstar.
Then we return to our home on the corner of Ayers and Wright in Obamaville, to anxiously await the next Obama day.

Because, you know, it stinks.

Don't public figures have to be dead to have their own national holiday?
This may be ominous . . . .

Actually we can simply rename an entire month after him (like August and July). Replace October with Obamer.

Is that 'Obamer' or 'Oh, bummer'?

Yes, yank the Godlike Comrade 0 away from his magic teleprompter and you find his tounge NOT to be silver and his feet made of clay.

I'll say it again, would give my eyeteeth to be a fly on the wall when Vlad Putin rips his heart out of his ribcage and eats it!

I have been flying the American flag in front of my house ever since I moved in. On November 5th, I rigged so that I could fly it upside down and backward which seems fitting. It shall remain this way until the incoming President becomes the outgoing one.

I remember when my parents had like a 12 percent mortgage in the early eighties.

I also remember turning in reusable glass Coke bottles for gas money for my 1977 Ford F-250. If I remember correctly, I had to scratch up about five bucks a day to drive that big, beat-up bastarad to and from high school...ahhh, the salad days of youth.

Have you ever wondered why the MSM (everyone really) is always saying that the current situation is the worst economic disaster since the Great Depression? Really? 25% unemployment that lasted for years.

I suspect that they started using that phrase to get out in front of the more truthful idea that we're in the worst economic crisis since Jimmy Carter. People today have no idea what a real depression is...yet.

Today is the 70 anniversary of 'Kristallnacht', the day when hordes of SA and other Nazis stormed Synagogues all over Germany, vandalized Jewish stores, beat and killed Jews, as an opening event for what led to the systematic extermination of European Jewery.

It will be nice. Children could be required to write poems for Dear Leader and he could come out onto the front lawn to inspect a huge military parade in his honor.

Not military. He will review a parade of the new National Civilian Service Corps!

No, that's based on MLK's own quotes regarding the Vietnam War. The plagiarism was proven by a retroactive look at speeches written by other clergy and social activists of the time. The FBI wiretap story admittedly is hearsay but the hookers angle has been corroborated by former associates of his. But don't get me wrong, unlike BHO, Dr. King had many terrific achievements in his lifetime with the civil rights movement.

He had me at content of character.

I wouldn't put any big money on this actually turning into naming a national holiday after BHO.... we have crazy proposals for national holidays all the time.
Just don't let them rename Reagan National (DCA) , dammit.

But, whenKENYA declares it a national holiday it makes you wonder...

696 Kulhwch  Sun, Nov 9, 2008 5:56:15pm
Plans are being made to promote a national holiday for Barack Obama, who will become the nation’s 44th president when he takes the oath of office Jan. 20.

“Yes We Can” planning rallies will be at 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. every Tuesday at the downtown McDonald’s restaurant, 1100 Kansas Ave., until Jan. 13. The goals are to secure a national holiday in Obama’s honor, to organize celebrations around his inauguration and to celebrate the 200th birthday of President Abraham Lincoln, who was born on Feb. 12 1809.

They've gotta be farking kidding.

As a student or Roman history, I recognize the trend.  When is the deification to take place?

}:P     [When does the Library of Congress become a mosque?  Unfrickenbelievable!]

As far as I know free speech is still allowed in the USA. I have it the way I described as a symbol for they way I believe this country has lurched with the past election. An upside down flag is used to signal dire distress? ( 186 a) I have also considered keep the flag at perpetual half mast as sign of mourning.

Recipe for the new Obama cake.

Take 3 pounds of empty slogans
Add one teleprompter
Mix in an adoring and unquestioning media
Stir in a healthy pinch of white liberal guilt
Bake for less then two years in the Senate
Serve with kool aid

================================================== ========

Serve quickly - it begins to stink when left in the light of day.

704 Mark1957  Sun, Nov 9, 2008 6:50:29pm

If "Obama Day" ever comes to pass, I will....

1. Work a full 8 hour shift on "Obama Day."

and then

2. Call in sick on Washington's Birthday, Lincoln's Birthday, Jefferson Davis's Birthday, and Robert E. Lee's Birthday.

I think using up four sick days for "Obama Day" would make for an even trade. ;)

Watch. I'll bet this catches on.

Charles -

Tell you what. Lets celebrate "OBAMA DAY" on 2/19/2009 - the day that Analog Broadcast TV goes dead in the US - AND - when many viewers, unaware of what happened willl blame "The President" - in this case -
Barack Obama.

Oh no, if you do that he will just give everyone a free digital TV as part of the celebration. Then they will love him more.

I hope that Obama Day is really satire. The can't be serious.

Wake me when it's over, say about 2012....

711 Mike P  Sun, Nov 9, 2008 9:45:40pm

How about merging "Obama Day" with Earth Day, and moving both to February 29th? Then all the days that people with lives couldn't care less about will be compressed into 24 hours, and annoy us only every fourth year.

Nice idea, I recommend the extra leap day that we skip once a century, that way we can celebrate HIS nothingness.

713 Skyhawk07  Sun, Nov 9, 2008 10:30:29pm

The more devious part of me (read manipulative obamanous ) would suggest the first Tuesday in November that we can all remember "The One" as we vote for him over and over and over and over....

714 landline  Mon, Nov 10, 2008 12:30:29am

Perhaps he will use an executive order to make this new holiday the law of the land.

715 nightops  Mon, Nov 10, 2008 3:49:18am

If this is serious there will be a lot of people with egg on their faces and angry villagers with torches should he make a hash of things.

So far he's treading carefully by keeping it very broad and vague. The most detail we got the other day was on the type of dog they were looking for.

716 freedombilly  Mon, Nov 10, 2008 6:05:49am

I would like to form a new organization to counter "Yes We Can". It will be called "Do We Have To?".

An Obama national holiday? I think I'll just vomit.

719 duketheinfidel  Mon, Nov 10, 2008 7:00:30am

Maybe they should put his face on a three dollar bill. The banner underneath can read "yes we can"!

720 Lanzman  Mon, Nov 10, 2008 7:06:10am

Meh. I can sorta see it. First black president and all, which has historical significance independent of any other consideration. Still, I'd rather he actually, y'know, do something before being honored in such fashion.

721 MarcoPolo  Mon, Nov 10, 2008 11:49:34am

I actually don't mind this being started for the simple fact that he's going to be the first black President of the U.S.

In a country that started out with black slaves, fought through civil rights and the right to vote and such, I think it's historic enough to warrant giving the guy a day.

Heck, if anything, I'll take another day off work.
