4 Ozark Mountain Daredevil  Sun, Nov 9, 2008 6:13:09pm

That's what the constitution will look like after 4 years of Obama.

6 Fat Bastard Vegetarian  Sun, Nov 9, 2008 6:13:42pm

As I was walking
I saw a sign there
And on the sign it said
No Trespassing
But on the other side
It didn't say nothing
That side was made for you and me.

"This is a man of our times, he is capable of restarting dialogue, all the more since the circumstances will allow him to get out of a dead-end situation. Barack Obama has not had a very long career, but it is hard to find faults, and he has led an election campaign winning over the Democratic Party and Hillary Clinton herself. We can judge from this that this person is capable of engaging in dialogue and understanding current realities."

Former Russian oligarch Mikhail Khodorkovsky, founder of now defunct Yukos oil giant, who is in prison on fraud and tax evasion charges, also used the word perestroika in discussing the future course of the Obama administration.

In an article published in the business daily Vedomosti on Friday, Khodorkovsky said Obama's election win was not merely another change of power in a separate country, but was important for all states.

He said that, "being a liberal himself, he thinks that the world will take a left turn," and that "a global perestroika would be a logical response to the global crisis."

"The paradigm of global development is about to change. The era inaugurated by Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher 30 years ago is over."

Thanks. I feel all warm and safe now.

That is fine if a coalition of voices will make a difference as Obama pens executive orders, or can influence congress. You have to have power over them to influence their decisions.

You have 3 choices: Fight, Conform or Flee. A coalition is only good for the first one, unless it is a coping session or travel planning.

98 jemima  Sun, Nov 9, 2008 6:41:56pm

Peggy Noonan must have been seriously imbibing the Kool-Aid. In her last WSJ piece she said the election was a mandate for moderation. I wrote in to ask what would give her that impression when everything in his life has been far left. They're heady, delirious, drunk on their mandate to create a socialist hellhole here. There's no middle about it, there's no moderation and there's no waiting for an economic recovery. Anyone who harbors hopey-changey wishes about coalitions or bipartisanship is just stupid.

99 Bos2112  Sun, Nov 9, 2008 6:42:06pm

A few classic quotes today:

When Harry Reid was asked about keeping Robert Gates --"He's not even a Republican," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada said. "Why wouldn't we want to keep him? He's never been a registered Republican."
So much for bi-partisanship. And ...since when a Senator in charge of selecting a cabinet?

And...say farewell to any new drilling :
On drilling, the federal Bureau of Land Management is opening about 360,000 acres of public land in Utah to oil and gas drilling. Bush administration officials argue that the drilling will not harm sensitive areas; environmentalists oppose it.
"They want to have oil and gas drilling in some of the most sensitive, fragile lands in Utah," Podesta said. "I think that's a mistake."

FYI - Oil is already up $2.86 overseas and dollar is weakening Vs. Pound and Euro. I am truly dreading the next 4 years

Apparently the jerk blocked me from commenting a little while after telling me to just "Accept" it. At least I can still down-ding, but I think a LOT of down-dings might make an impression.

After he posted "just enjoy the ride my friend, it's over, accept it and lets move on." I wanted to post this:

I wonder if moveon.org is having a clearance on Not My President bumper stickers...

But Youtube doesn't even tell you you're blocked, it lets you write, and then ineffectually hit the post button. So if someone wants to lend a hand on my behalf...

Folks - it appears that the Senate election in Minnesota between Sen. Norm Coleman and comedian Al Franken is undergoing attempted robbery right under our noses. Anyone able to go to Minnesota to witness the recount is encouraged to do so! Below is an email I received today:

Al Franken and a highly partisan Secertary of State are collaborating to steal the Senate race in Minnesota. Though an official recount has not yet begun, in the days since the election, new Franken votes have appeared in a few counties, and Norm Coleman votes have disappeared. Much like landslide Lyndon Johnson's victory in the 1948 Senate race in Texas, some of the incremental vote tallies provided by Democratic leaning counties are 100% for Franken. Remarkable. Maybe as with Johnson, the voters signed in to vote in alphabetical order. Minnesota is not like Washington State, where the Governor's race was stolen in 2004, or Illinois, stolen by Mayor Daley for JFK in 1960. Maybe the good citizens will be upset by what is going on. And maybe not. In the meantime, you can help Norm Coleman attempt to insure an honest recount by contributing through the site linked below. It would be hard to imagine a greater mismatch in experience, judgement, and character than Coleman versus Franken. Franken is a bad guy, and I know no better way to put it. Coleman is one of the most stalwart defenders of the US Israel relationship. I encourage you to get involved. The powerline site, Minnesota based, is all over the story.

Subject: Coleman for Senate Recount Efforts

Thank you for all you have already done for Senator Coleman!

As you know, Senator Coleman emerged from Tuesday the winner of our Senate race. State law dictates, however, that an automatic recount be conducted when the margin is less than .5% of the total votes cast. We are only up by 236 votes in a race where almost 3 million votes were cast.

We expect a recount to commence within the next two weeks, to defend Senator Coleman’s victory, we need your help.

New limits are in place for donations to our Recount Fund. An individual may give up to $2,300 and multi-candidate federal PACs may donate up to $5,000. Please note that this is over and beyond any donations already made to Coleman for Senate ’08. These donations also do not count toward the overall biennial federal limit of $108,200.

This recount is going to be a very aggressive effort on both sides, and we need to have all of our resources in place to defend our victory ASAP. It would be great if you could consider making a contribution and collecting checks on behalf of the Coleman for Senate Recount Fund.

At least 20 shipbuilders and servicemen were killed Saturday 08 November 2008 when the fire-extinguishing system aboard a nuclear-powered submarine was accidentally activated. Local Russian news agencies were reporting that human error was likely to be the cause. The submarine was conducting sea trials off Russia's Pacific coast in the waters of the Sea of Japan when the accident occurred. The submarine was supposed to soon enter the Russia Fleet. The fire-extinguishing systems aboard many submarines use chemicals and foam.

Akula II class vessels are considered the quietest and deadliest of Russian nuclear-powered attack submarines. The construction of the Akula II class K-152 Nerpa nuclear attack submarine started in 1991 but has been suspended at 82% complete for fifteen years due to lack of funding. Funding for completing the boat was included in 2007 National Defense Procurement budget, and there was speculation that the submarine was probably intended for transfer to India. The Nerpa had started sea trials on 27 October 2008.

SNIP

Significant modifications were made to the original Project 971 Akula design beginning with the fifth unit. Classified as "Akula II", these modifications include a four-meter extension hull extension. They are sometimes called the "Walker-class," referring to John Anthony Walker, whose espionage data related to sonar detection was used to improve the submarine. Writing in 1999, Neal Stevens observed "The spying efforts of American naval personnel John Walker and radioman Jerry Whitworth made the Soviet Union's military chiefs aware of how far advanced American submarines were. Substantial efforts to marginalize the sound profile of the Akula can be traced to intelligence gained from the Walker spy ring. A separate but equally empowering sequence of events for the Russians was the illegal sale of propeller milling technology by the Japanese firm Toshiba and the Norwegian firm Kongsberg. The combined results generated a steep drop in broadband acoustic noise profiles."

What I sent:

Dear Sirs:

Peggy Noonan gushes over the coming Obama Administration, “What a thing this is going to be to see. What luck to observe it.” Funny, I don’t feel at all lucky: I feel incredibly apprehensive.

Ms. Noonan asks, “would the American people so terribly mind something that looked a little like Clinton 3? They remember Bill Clinton's years, holiday from history and all, as a relatively secure and prosperous era.” She seems to forget that the Clinton years were a period in which the world became progressively less secure and stable, in which the United States responded with apathy or weakness to mounting threats and thus allowed the plans and preparations for Sept. 11, 2001, to proceed unimpeded.

The continual attacks on American interests and citizens during the Clinton Administration should have clued President Clinton in to the magnitude of the threat posed by Salafist terrorism. Add to that Iran’s bid for regional and Islamic hegemony, the chaos of ethnic and ideological conflict across Africa, Bolivarista socialism in South America, the resurgence of Russian imperialism and the rise of the People’s Republic of China as a global military power, and you can appreciate that the scale of security threats to the United States is daunting – and President Obama will not be able to claim that there was no way to foresee them. Having run on a platform explicitly pledging to withdraw from Iraq without regard to the consequence of its becoming a new base for Al-Qaeda or a new satrapy of the Islamic Republic of Iran, President Obama may seek to “save $10 billion a month” through that withdrawal and end up precipitating a security crisis that will have a far greater cost in American blood and treasure.

Best regards,

[stuiec]

Anyone able to go to Minnesota to witness the recount is encouraged to do so!

Fell free to donate money, but please don't just flock here without being invited to physically help. Contact the campaign first.

Norm's up by 221 at last count, possibly minus the 32 "trunk" absentee ballots, although it's hard to tell because MN SoS ACORN Mark has stripped the vote count off the State website.

They can't realistically pull anymore votes out of their cars, it's been almost a week. All precincts have, by now, had plenty of time to play shenanigans or hold their peace during canvassing. The election will be certified a week from Tuesday and the recount will commence the next day and will be complete in December.

/if Norm's up 100 going into the recount, he wins, it's almost statistically impossible that the recount will be that different from the canvassing

OTOH, we can't take any weapon off the table. If we define levels of violence that are completly off limits, then the path to victory to the Jihadis is clear: reach and surpass that level and they win when we fold up and go home. It really is that simple.

I've been dishartened by our conduct in the War on that level. We very pointedly didn't take nuclear weapons off the table after 9-11, but we didn't use them. Likewise, we let the Mohammedans brow-beat us into currying favor with them from the start. We changed the name of our war from "Infinite Justice" to "enduring Freedon" lest we offend the Mohammedans. That was a mistake.

The Muslim world should have been giving thanks that we didn't decide that this was a war between the US and Islam. We have taken the kid glove approach to fighting this war, and it has cost American lives.

Haar mate, the one thing that has worked is the US approach to suburban fighting taking extra casualties to avoid collateral damage to human shields. The Iraqi citizen finally realized that the Americans were the only ones trying to help them. America has won the Iraqi hearts, as much as Al Quaada with their mass suicide attacks drove them into American arms. I couldn't be prouder of our troops mate!

The mistake the left is making this election is thinking we live in a democracy.

We do not, and never have.

We live in a Representative Republic governed by rule of law.

They are under the impression everything is subject to change with an election.

Somethings in this were considered to be immutable, above the provence of any majority no matter how great to change.

This immutable, unchangeable portions of founding laws were called rights.

No majority, no government, no person, power or potentate has the authority to change those rights.

Even so, the boat still sucks. Soviet engineering at its finest. What's the score now on Soviet sub disasters? Nukes, a specialty?

From what I understand, the Russian boats are actually pretty good, its the training of the crews that has been their worst killer, the Russian submariners are not near as skilled as their western counterparts and subsequently run into some disasters of their own making. Reportedly the Soviet nuclear icebreaker Lenin was contaminated when a cook used radioactive steam to clean a dirty pot and was out of action for years before they got her decontaminated.

Well, that was the theory, but given time and about 200+ years, the lawyers have figured out ways to deny those rights. For example McCain-Feingold=direct suppression of the free speech formerly enshrined in the 1st Amendment; DC, NY, and Chicago gun laws=direct abrogation of 2nd Amendment rights; and I could go on, but I get depressed easily these days.

Saudi "beautiful goat" pageant.

Owners of pedigree "Najdi" goats from around the Gulf region converged on Riyadh this week, hoping to win the prize for top male and female goat, following in the footsteps of lucrative camel competitions which have taken off in recent years.

"The Najdi goat is a pure national product like nothing else in the world," said Sheikh Faisal al-Saadoun, a leading Saudi breeder who organised the show. "They are different in terms of beauty, shape and how eye-catching they are."

While I feel for the dead and their families, I can't find myself mourning the damage to the sub itself. It was like that with the Kursk, too. My heart went out to the sailors who died for their country and their families, but I damn sure was glad the the Kursk went to the bottom. It carried something like 27 nuclear-capable cruise missiles. It was mainly in existence to hunt aircraft carriers and to kill them.

No, it didn't break my heart for her to go down.

That hyper cavitating torpedo they we testing that blew would have been a game changer in naval engagements. The shelved it since the Kursk and maybe sold the plans to Iran since they've been playing with it.

I was half-listening to 60 Minutes tonight when Ted Turner was on. I think he said he thought that George Bush was the most dangerous man in the world.

This, to me, is why we are at where we're at. We have a media that thinks of an American president as more dangerous than Osama bin Laden, the leaders of Iran, Castro, Kim Jung Il, etc. They convinced the public that the conservatives/Republicans are to blame for all their problems. And the public bought it. Bush Derangement Syndrome was an easy sell.

I certainly do not think the right should have Obama Derangement Syndrome. But, the right needs to get tough and passionate to regain at least the Congress.

We're starting to see what that really means.

Chales,

I have to say that I notice quite a few differences not only between what you post here as threads, but also the views of the individual posters and the links that they post also. I would say that any site that can proudly post anti-creationist views (or as the creationists like to term "anti-intelligent design views"), and pro-Israeli threads on the same day means that it is far from "right-wing blog" and as close to addressing the issues of today as you can get. And just because we don't drink the kool-aid of the demonrats, doesn't mean that we take to labeling very well either.

Who labeled this site as a right-wing blog anyway? I would be curious to know.

Strategy page reports the boat is be leased to the Indians as they learn to crew and build nuclear subs.

The Kursk went down due to a fire in the Torpedo room with a monster 23 inch torpedo designed specifically to kill our big carriers. The Torpedo mate was inexperienced, the huge torpedo required special handling. A fire erupted just before the torpedo was to be launched, and the torpedo warhead cooked off destroying the front quarter of the sub and killing all who were lining up to enter an "escape pod" housed in the sail. The only unflooded compartment was the stern compartment and about a dozen sailer's took refuge there, but the compartment was slowly flooding, at some point water got to their oxygen packs and a flash fire erupted killing the survivors. When European rescue divers opened the rescue chamber they saw dark bubbles exiting the compartment and knew that was bad news. The stern compartment uninhabitable but the men left notes and letters for their loved ones. Thats how we know what happened in the forward torpedo room. A sad story mates!

Osama and Satan are planning an attack from Hell, in between kissy-poo. Satan will rule on earth when the first innocent Canadian blood is shed.

Interesting you should use that word, "rule".

I was just listening to the radio in my car, and I heard a woman who seemed to be speaking for the incoming administration, in an interview with Tom Brokaw. (Sorry, don't know who it was.)

She actually said that Obama would be ready to "take power and rule on Day One".

I'm probably being overly sensitive, but that was the language she used, and I found it disturbing.

The russians were in denial, the Americans had to wait until the American sub was safely out of the area before we could tell the Russians they had a dead sub.I think the Russian admiral lost his job over the lack of response to the known "transient" heard by the sonar crews...

01/21/2009 - the day the training wheels come off. Obama better get himself up to speed, or it's going to be a very long and interesting four years. For someone who the pundits and experts claim to be such a gifted speaker, his language is quite imprecise, and that can lead to serious problems.

Given his halting "uh" filled way of expressing himself when not reading a script, I thought he was being abundantly careful. Off script, I don't think he's capable of hiding the political calculator in his head, which is why people get mixed messages and (I predict) he will lose the good will he previously earned on the campaign trail. Sarkozy called him on being an empty suit (if rumours can be trusted - "formulations empty of all content").

While I certainly would prefer the subsidies to go to family farms, I was thinking more along the lines of simply ensuring the food supply. If the big firms get subsidies, too, it's still less of a waste of my tax dollars than a lot of other things. Food is a critical commodity, no matter who grows it. I want a lot of it to be grown here.

I have a problem with people using my tax dollars to lobby my government for more tax dollars.

Yes, it is true. Firearms are being studied as a public health issue. I saw a book talk on BookTV a couple of years ago. The author was a Phd in Public Health --which I've decided is as worthwhile as having a Phd in Underwater Basketball. He concluded that American's were not going to give up their handguns, the best we could do is to implement safety protocals similar to what has been required for automobiles. He seemed to think that trigger locks were comparable to airbags, seatbelts and 5-mile per hour bumpers.

Not once did he mention: enforcing laws that were already on the books; reintroducing shooting sports in high schools for non-JROTC students; or increasing public funding for firearms training for the general population.

Driving is a privilege, firearm's ownership is a right.

Uh huh. Name me one "right wing" site that isn't also called a hate site - not necessarily accurately but you know that's where Kos, Huffpoo and DU are going - hell they sometimes just skip over the right-wing and go straight to the hate part.
And btw, Charles once described himself - in the very early days of LGF - as a liberal who had been mugged by 9/11 (sort of a take off on the idea that a conservative being a liberal who'd just been mugged).
OTOH, LGF has supported Bush in his WoT - and of course properly criticised him when appropriate, but we haven't opposed Gitmo or FISA and Bush, Gitmo and FISA = right wing, immediately followed by hate. A right-wing hate site. That this is not true is manifest and anyone who would accuse Charles of being much more than center or maybe center right is being critical to a higher degree than Charles or LGF deserve.

Obama thinks he is a good talker, but he is often undisciplined when he speaks. He needs to understand that as President, his words will be scrutinized and will have impact whether he intends it or not. In this regard, President Bush is an excellent model; Obama should take a lesson from his example. Bush never gets sloppy when he is speaking publicly. He chooses his words with care and precision, which is why his style sometimes seems halting. In the eight years he has been President, it is remarkable how few gaffes or verbal blunders he has committed. If Obama doesn't raise his standards, he will exceed Bush's total before he is inaugurated.

Naw, can't remember the organization. I thought it was 2nd Amendment Sisters, but i can't find it on their site. IT is a downloadable brochure/contract that you can present to a pediatrician who asks that question of your child.

The last doctor we saw asked my son what he did for fun. He said he shot skeet. The doctor replied (in an honest gutteral Tim the Toolman grunt) "Coool".

That's great!
I'm pretty sure that's the reaction we'd get here. The pediatricians don't bother to ask because everyone has them. The most hunters and soldiers per capita, I believe.

I am sure we have more injuries from gun accidents than random violence. I guess that's a fair swap.

re: #286 Iron Fist

Great post. I think we've been way too soft, and now no one is scared of us. With Obama it will be worse. We need to be fearsome. That will help keep us, and everyone else in the world, safe from the maniac jihadists.

Very good. I liked this one, and wrote a similar thought upthread.

8. Learn to Fight Back. John McCain suffered (in part) because Democrats were able to link him, successfully to George W. Bush. The President, in turn, became a pariah because he was defined in terms selected by his political opponents and their allies in the MSM. How did Mr. Bush respond? Mostly, he didn't. Apparently, he believed that getting down into the political mud sullied his office and the nation's view of it. That's a touching idea, but it is horribly misguided in a era of non-stop news cycles. For only a brief, shining moment--during the late Tony Snow's stint as press secretary--did the White House forcefully engage its critics, and present its message with clarity and vision.

Hey Bro' - yeah and after all Charles - or perhaps more accurately, LGF was definitely for Bush against Kerry, big time and - I really mean this - it's truly unfortunate that the Democratic Party doesn't have time for liberals anymore.
There used to be a time when you could be called a liberal - and maybe a conservative, though I don't recall that - and all it meant was that you subscribed to a particular set of values - not dishonorable, not dishonest and most assuredly not unwilling to discuss rather than rant and rave and definitely not un-American. Geez, guys like Scoop Jackson for example were socially liberal but foreign policy hawks. I think the same is true of Clell Miller as well.
Of course conservatives haven't helped ourselves by appearing to alway be "Anti" social things and foreign policy hawks. And Republicans and conservative Republicans in particular used to virtually paint themselves that way. On abortion, on Gun Rights, on homosexuality on a whole raft of social issues that frequently and unfortunately went into individual's religious and constitutional freedoms.

The Left and the Liberals live in a dream world. They don't know what reality is. On one hand, I hope they never learn. On the other, I hope they get a wake-up call sometime before the United States goes totally down the tubes.

Too many people are too stupid for their own good, Turner being one example.

Right after it happened I thought of the quote from the Great General himself. He said that it was "well that war was so terrible;otherwise, we would become too fond of it". We need to try to bring this war to a close, and get on with the next one. We have to make war terrible for the Islamonazis, for they have grown too fond of war.

3 years in Club Gitmo working on your plans for terrorisn when you get out isn't doin' the job. If anything, it is preforming a valuable service of giving the top Jihadis a place to vacation. Treating your enemyes with kid gloves doesn't make them love you. It's just giving them a little break at taxpayers expense.

The problem with that, and I agree with you, is that the Islamonazis are also found of the destruction we visit upon them.

That changes the equation somewhat, the enemy has to fear the death and destruction we can visit on them. When they don't, we start getting into territory even we cringe at.

To go there takes a very united front on our part, something which we don't have.

May I repost -

Ode to the Marines

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was God. In the Beginning was God - and all else was darkness, and void, and without form. So God created the heavens and the earth. He created the sun, and the moon, and the stars, so that light might pierce the darkness. And the earth God divided between the land and the sea, and these He filled with many assorted creatures. And the dark, salty, slimy creatures that inhabited the murky depths of the oceans, God called sailors, and He dressed them accordingly.

And the flighty creatures of the air He called airmen. And these He clothed in uniforms which were ruffled and fowl.

And the lower creatures of the land, God called soldiers. And with a twinkle in His eye, and a sense of humor that only He could have, God gave them trousers too short, and covers too large, and pockets to warm their hands. And to adorn their uniforms, God gave them badges. And He gave them cords. And He gave them ribbons… and patches… and stars… and bells. He gave them emblems… and crests… and all sorts of shiny things that glittered… and devices that dangled. When you’re God, you tend to get carried away in a big way.

And on the 7th day, as you know, God rested. And on the 8th day at 0730, God looked down upon the earth and was not happy.

GOD WAS NOT HAPPY.

So He thought about His labors, and in His infinite wisdom, God created a divine creature and this He called a Marine. And these Marines whom God created in His own image, were to be of the air, the land, and the sea. And these He gave many wonderful uniforms.

He gave them practical, fighting uniforms, so that they could wage war against the forces of Satan and evil.

He gave them service uniforms for their daily work and training, that they might be sharp and ready.

And He gave them evening and dress uniforms. Sharp, stylish, handsome things, so they might score with the ladies on Saturday night, and impress the hell outta everybody!

And at the end of the 8th day, God looked down upon the earth, and saw that it was good. But was God happy? No!

GOD WAS STILL NOT HAPPY.

Because in the course of His labors, He had forgotten one thing… He did not have a Marine uniform! But He thought about it, and thought about it, and finally satisfied Himself in knowing that, well, not everybody can be a Marine…

Ever wonder how a sniper could put a round clean through the enemy sniper's scope?

Well, Carlos N. Hathcock II actually did it.

Hathcock returned to Hill 55 unscathed. In one incredible incident an enemy sniper was killed after a prolonged game of "cat and mouse" between Carlos, with his spotter, and the NVA sniper. The fatal round, fired at 500 yards by Hathcock, passed directly through the NVA sniper's rifle scope, striking him in the eye.

/he used to also hold the sniper shot distance record, but that's been usurped by some Canadian lads, using special U.S. match grade ammunition at 2430 meters

All I can say is that it just seems like a pro-Israel, anti-idiotarian site to me. If that is far-right, then label me all you want.

On the other hand, I never see a thread about abortion, gun rights, promotion of any one religion, and I rarely see anything on wasteful spending.

I don't think LGF is far-right without all or most of these things.

/I don't think it is far, middle or near-left either!

Hi Neighbor!

The only reason LGF has been labeled "right-wing" is because there are so many people today who don't have a voice (like me). The jihadist threat has been minimized by the MSM. The people who fear Obama's lack of credentials have been marginalized by the MSM. The fact that people who caused the Great FannieMay/FreddieMac/Banking Crash of 2008 are still in charge of the government is quite worrisome.

These aren't "right-wing" issues, but they're labeled such by liberals who will brook no dissent on their favorite subjects, like "No War for Oil," and "Fight Global Warming."

Nope we have not.

And while I think the our response should make anyone considering attacking us shit themselves. Collectively, now, we don't have the cojones. What it would take to grow them in itself is horrible, I don't think we be able to get that cohesion until we lose 250,000 in a single incident.

A significant portion of that 52% will come to regret that decision - either through buyers remorse, or disappointment that Obama couldn't deliver on a fraction of what he promised; there's $650 million reasons why Obama will disappoint. All those favors, and some are quite contradictory.

Yup. I wonder how many of those 52% (probably more like 48% plus voter fraud) will later deny they voted for "that guy"? :D

Thanks to your Dad for his service. They do love their "docs".

Happy Birthday Marines!

Thank you. He always thought of himself as a sailor and a Marine; this used to puzzle me when I was a little girl (I thought you had to be one or the other), but I finally understood what he meant when I read Flags of Our Fathers. (I am fortunate enough to have inherited his Marine dress uniform.)

Another relative of mine was with the Fifth Marine Division/28th (Bobo's Bastards) on Iwo...he was KIA on Hill 362A. He was my dad's best friend. I neglected to mention his service in my other post - so I have to correct that.

To all our Marines out there (once a Marine, always a Marine), again, Happy Birthday.

The thing that gets me about Farrakhan though, is his blatant antisemitism. Here is a quote from him after he had returned from Libya:

"Now that nation called Israel never has had any peace in forty years and she will never have any peace because there can be no peace structured on injustice, thievery, lying and deceit and using the name of God to shield your gutter religion under his holy and righteous name. "

Course it didn't hurt that Obama - defying a tradition that went back 20 years for both Democrats and Republicans - rejected public financing and essentially bought - or if you prefer rented - America.
And in my entire long life I've never EVER seen a President elect - and this includes Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton, stand at a podium with a seal that said "President Elect". I can't tell if that's his ego - he did do something no one else has ever done before - or his insecurity, like if he says it enough it'll really be true! LOL!

The miniature reactors will be factory-sealed, contain no weapons-grade material, have no moving parts and will be nearly impossible to steal because they will be encased in concrete and buried underground.

Happy Birthday to all of the Korean War Marines, especially Baker Company, lst Motor Transport and my dearly departed friend and mentor, Lt. Col. Olin L. Beall.

"On December 2, in temperatures that reached minus 24 degrees, U.S. Marine Lt. Col. Olin L. Beall, 52 years old and a 30-year veteran, went out on the reservoir ice for 12 hours with Pfc. Ralph Milton and Corpsman Oscar Biebinger (by midday, three more men had joined) and searched for survivors, despite sniper and automatic-weapons fire. They brought 319 men into Hagaru-ri. The next morning, after rescuing four more men on the reservoir, Beali went alone and unarmed to the silent string of trucks. He walked the length of the convoy and saw the wounded now lying frozen in each vehicle. No one was alive."

Hi Folks,

Just for the fun of it tonight I decided to do some checking on the "MANDATE" Obama received in this election. In order to do that I took the time to go and enter in a spread sheet all 56 Presidential Elections that have taken place here in the United States from 1792 to today. How many electoral votes were cast in each and what percentage of the electoral votes each winning President won with. I also put in every Popular vote since we kept track of those. (Just the last 47 elections, prior to that the popular vote was not kept, or at least I could not find it.) Here is how Obama ranked - you tell me is this a mandate.

In electorial votes, of all 56 elections Obama ranked 32nd. In other words 31 elections were won with a higher percentage of electorial votes than Obama received in this election. (He received 69.0702% of the electorial vote.)

In popular votes since they have been tracked 47 elections - Obama ranked 28th. In other words 27 Presidents were elected with a higher percentage of the popular vote. (He received 53.2546% of the popular vote.)

Oh the other one I hear a lot - He won with more votes than anyone has received in history. Well of those 47 elections since we have been tracking 31 of them were won with "The most votes in history."

So... in both electorial and popular he was not even in the top half of presidents winning with the highest percentage. Fun little project, opened my eyes to what a mandate is.

Maybe the Poles should partner with the Israelis and get the Arrow.

re: #644 realwest

Multiple Sclerosis is rarely fatal. It is a difficult to kill myth about the disease. If you hear that someone died of MS, you have most likely heard wrong. Often it is the easiest explanation for loved-ones who don't understand the disease. Also, the disease wasn't well understood until recently -- treatments are totally different from even 20 years ago.

Unless the lesion or "sclerosis" attacks the part of the nervous system that controls breathing or the heart, and that lesion goes untreated, it is unlikely that a person died directly from MS. Now, they may be immobile and develop pneumonia or something similar, and die from that, but MS itself is very, very rarely fatal.

That's bringing back memories...

Had a collection of ever 100 Doc Savage books, not very long, and I liked the early books of the series the best. I think the "Sargasso Ogre" was my favorite!

Oh, I wanted to add that this is not an unusual case. I've seen it in the paper several times. The Crow tribe has homecoming ceremonies, too. I think the warrior ethic is alive and well among the Native Americans in this area of the country.

Hey there {newsjunkie_ky} congratulations! I don't watch the news anymore except at breakfast when Mom insists on watching that jerky show Fox and Friends.
But I can't really say I'm boycotting them because of this election - I stopped LONG AGO.
BTW -someone posted something out here about an interview Charlie Rose had with Tom Brokaw, gave a link to it - I recall it as being post #51 on some thread in the last two days - but the transcription of this interview -which was performed on October 31, 2008 indicated that Brokaw and Rose HAD NO CLUE as to who OBAMA was - they said it in exactly those words!

Respectfully, I think the warrior ethic is alive and well and in much more than just in the tribal lands of the First Americans.

re: #655 LoFlyer

I loved the old Skylark of space series by EE "Doc" Smith till the very end where the villain kills the hero and steals the hero's willing girl-friend I was always a little distrustful of women after that, but I got over it! I was also a big Doc Savage fan even if he wouldn't kill the bad guys!

(Emphasis mine)

Er... what?!? I don't remember that happening! And I read all those books, too.

I do remember that the recurring villain, vanquished in the penultimate novel, came back in the last one and wound up at the end... settling down on some planet somewhere and becoming less of a villain, taking along his new live-in girlfriend. Sorta like happened with "Jaws" in the James Bond movies.

You gotta publish those data and results somewhere online, or hand them over to Charles so he can post them while giving you the hat tip.

I once had so many many paper paperback books that I filled up the bed of pickup truck with them when I moved out of California. I left them at at a secondhand book shop in Mountain View, California. I could not fathom throwing them away and I could not afford to take them with with me.

An unavoidable regret.

I can't find my old skylark books.

I fear that they were left behind.

Such is life.

I wonder if Giuliani/Palin 2012 would work.

Yep. I think they should announce early on in the primary season that they are going to run as that ticket. Romney would be done before the first campaign stop...as would Jindal.

I hope Rudy calls her, and I hope she's open to the idea. Rudy was out there campaigning like crazy for the ticket, and he went public calling the Romneyite/NRO critics jerks a couple of weeks ago...

Did you know the distance from Tel Aviv to Moscow is equal to the distance of Las Vegas to Chicago?

But Moscow is due North of Tel Aviv.
