The vets of the local VFW post where out selling flags at the grocery store today. I bought one for each my boys 5 and 4. Paid way to much for the flags, but they were worth every dime. I then had the boys say thank you to each of the vets. They don't know why yet, but they will learn later.

Best part of my day, shaking hands with some old men and saying thank you for something they did before I was born.

Veteran's day is Tuesday. Find a vet and thank them.

the 1st Marine Division off as being lost because they were surrounded by 22
enemy divisions. The Marines made it out inflicting the highest casualty
ratio on an enemy in history and destroying 7 entire enemy divisions in the
process. An enemy division is 16500+ men while a Marine division is 12500 men.

Wow. DUH stuff, huh? Doesn't he know that the whole embryonic stem cell thing is so yesterday? Science marches on beyond the old embrionic stem cell thing. The direct reprogramming technique, which transforms adult stem cells into an embryonic-like state, is proving more useful. People have actually been helped. ESC research thus far has helped no one and killed a number of lab animals, which is why the USA has thus far not allowed any human testing. And The O wants us to pay for all that.

88 Old Engineer  Sun, Nov 9, 2008 10:34:39pm

In commemoration of the upcoming Veteran's Day the minister of my church today asked all veterans to rise and be commended for their service.
I rose with perhaps twenty others, and heard applause through my tears.
Several members personally thanked me later for my service. I felt somewhat humbled, for, although I was Infantry-trained, I never had a shot fired at me, I never had to kill another human, I was not wounded, and was never truly deprived.
I sometimes feel gulty because I lived, have had a good life, while many of my buddies were not so lucky. Some were killed. Some were grievosly wounded, some went mad, and all but a handful have gone on to a better place. I am grateful for my blessings.
God bless this land and the people in it.

RUDY in 2012!

How about when primary season starts, Rudy and Palin announce they are going to run as Giuliani/Palin. Rudy for POTUS, Palin for VP?

I like that a whole lot better than Palin/Jindal. Jindal is a fantastic governor for LA, because folks down there don't mind his rather extreme religious stances. He'd even be a good US Senator from LA, if he's interested. But I would be shocked if he could pull off a national electoral victory---of course I'm shocked somebody who sat in "Rev Goddamned America Wright's" church just got elected.

What a fucking circus that will be. Can you see the defense subpoenaing the troops who captured the bastards being put on the stand.

Oh yeah - from the article:

Prosecuting all detainees in federal courts raises a host of problems. Evidence gathered through military interrogation or from intelligence sources might be thrown out. Defendants would have the right to confront witnesses, meaning undercover CIA officers or terrorist turncoats might have to take the stand, jeopardizing their cover and revealing classified intelligence tactics.

I'm worried about that right now. If BOzo pulls out of Iraq and fails us then our sacrifice has been for nothing. The demoncraps have been saying for years that Iraq is Vietnam. You on active duty swear first and foremost to uphold the Constitution. Remember that.

I let the Supreme Court and the various lawyers decide what is Constitutional... I follow the orders until someone tells me they are not lawful. I am not a constitutional lawyer, just an Old Sailor who does his best in any circumstance.
The American people have made thier decision and I am ready to live with it. If I find I can't live with it, then its time to go to PSD and hold my hand our for my DD 214.

The media double standard would sink the conservative though.

I could live with that. Rudy and anybody would be fine by me.

I just want a fiscal conservative, hawk, who will nominate judges who won't legislate from the bench and won't push religion in schools. Find me that republican and let's get them elected.

Karridine, I just read what you wrote and I must disagree. Domestic enemies that manage to get themselves elected are still enemies. What is it they say about two can play that game? We lost for two big reasons:

1. The media
2. McCain was too much of a Gentleman.

We can't do much about the second now, but we CAN put the MSM out of business. Literally. The NYT stock is tanking and we have more than a few people who play around or make their living in the stock market. Time to help it along.

Murdoch has issued orders at Fox that Obama is to be the man of the hour, immune from criticism. He can feel our displeasure too. Nothing says anyone HAS to watch Fox anything these days.

And we can resist. I, for one, will not cooperate with a single edict issued by the Obama "government." On January 20 I am going to raise the Gadsen flag in place of our American flag and drape it with black crepe. It will remain that way until my nation is restored.

People Who Can't Tolerate Disagreement

Do you know someone who cannot tolerate dissension or disagreement? It can be in the context of political or philosophical views, more day-to-day concerns -- or both. The inability to tolerate dissension is a confession that one's viewpoint was formed emotionally, not rationally or objectively. If a viewpoint was formed rationally, there is no threat posed by an opposing opinion or question. The inner reaction to such an opposing opinion will be something like: "He's mistaken. I can prove why, if it's worth my time and if he's interested. No threat, though." But if a viewpoint is emotionally held, it's another story. The inner reaction to dissension goes something like this: "I won't be proven wrong. I can't be proven wrong. I will not be questioned!"

Holding firm to a point-of-view is not proof that you cannot tolerate dissension. Holding firm simply means you're convinced you're right, you know why, and you see no reason to revisit old points of persuasion just because somebody is serving them up to you.

There are many ways someone can show they will not tolerate dissension. One is to cry. Another is to shout. Another is to calmly and cooly intimidate by getting personal. Another is to change the subject. Still another is to advocate shutting down freedom of speech in some context. There are many contexts, degrees and methods for displaying intolerance of dissent. They all spring from the same source: Emotional insecurity. The emotional insecurity, in turn, arises from a sense that one is probably wrong, and cannot accept it; or that one feels right, but cannot say why.

The least reasonable people are the ones who cannot tolerate dissent or disagreement.

I also think now is when various conservative groups begin forming PACs to deal with the 2010 and 2012 elections, and perhaps any other special needs that may arise such as legislation to lobby for or against, etc. Some of the republicans I work with are already discussing a PAC.

Murdoch has issued orders at Fox that Obama is to be the man of the hour, immune from criticism. He can feel our displeasure too. Nothing says anyone HAS to watch Fox anything these days.

I'm finished with Fox, too.

The entire MSM will try to cover themselves for what they've done.

At this point, I'll be avoiding seeing Obambi's face or hearing his voice online or on TV. I've had more than a lifetime's worth of both already (and not by choice.)

Here's some cause for optimism!

New Zealand's Helen Clark talked a good game, much like 0bama, and all she actually delivered was failure. So, something interesting happened this week:

Helen Clark's Labour Party loses to National Party in New Zealand vote

New Zealand prime minister, Helen Clark, is to stand down as Labour leader after conceding defeat in the country's general election.

The victorious National Party, led by John Key, took 59 seats in the vote and its partner ACT 5.

United Future leader Peter Dunne will join them, making a total of 65.

Labour has 43 seats, the Greens eight, and they are joined by Progressive Party leader Jim Anderton for a total of 52.

Mr Key said: "New Zealanders have voted for prosperity, for a brighter, more ambitious future."

Ms Clark said: "In politics we all experience the highs and the lows ... tonight is a night for the winners to savour, but we won't be going away."

She was first elected to parliament in 1981 and was made Labour leader in 1993.

"My job as leader of the Labour Party is complete," she said.

"I will be standing down and I will be expecting Labour colleagues to elect a new leader before Christmas, and I will give that new leader, whoever it is, the total loyalty I have enjoyed from every member of parliament for a very long time."

Despite the win by the centre-right Nationals, few major policy shifts are expected. Both the main parties promised tax cuts and extra spending to help cushion an economy already in recession and expected to suffer further fallout from the global credit crisis.

There are about 3 million registered voters, out of a population of about 4.3 million. It is compulsory to be enrolled to vote, but voting itself is not compulsory.

Over the last three elections, voter turnout has averaged 80.9 per cent.

Yup! We made fun of them all the time. Oh sure, they do their best to look battle hard while walking to the DFAC. But it was clear by the look on their faces when we rolled in the gate fresh off a covoy who was doing the dirty work.

same same in peacetime... i had someone in the PX at Club Bob one August complain that i smelled bad, not to my face mind you, just loud enough to hear as she bitched to her friend.

another time at Ft Hood, some remf in my hospital unit was complaining that there wasn't enough water pressure for her to take a shower that afternoon, and that she'd only had one shower all day.

i offered to walk her over to the wash racks, where the line dogs were washing 2 weeks of texas crud off the AFV's, so she could make her complaint in person.

unfortunately, someone stopped us. %-)

King Obama Ready to RULE on Day 1!

(Video At Link)

The co-chair of Barack Obama's Transition Team, Valerie Jarrett, appeared on Meet the Press this weekend and used, shall we say, an interesting word to described what she thinks Barack Obama will be doing in January when he's officially sworn into office. She told Tom Brokaw that Obama will be ready to "rule" on day one. It's a word that reflects the worst fears that people have for Obama the "arrogant," the "messiah," that imagines he's here to "rule" instead of govern.

Jarret told Brokaw that "given the daunting challenges that we face, it's important that president elect Obama is prepared to really take power and begin to rule day one."

Someone needs to get to Jarrett and inform her that American politicians are not Kings and do not "rule" from office. But if this is the attitude of Obama's transition team, what does The One himself imagine he is about to unleash? Could the fears that Obama thinks he is being anointed America's King be far off with this sort of talk flying about?

My own Floride Panhandle county, for the first time in living memory, went for the Dems, and Obama, even though our black population, though matter-of-factly visible, is kinda laid back and casual. I mean, my home county actually went to the left of the Log Cabin Republicans, who went for McCain, and had their bid for civil unions shafted, 70-30, by those selfsame black and hispanic voters who they stood beside when they voted Obama. And I never saw it coming. Nefver even had a nightmare about it.

Dammit, we were the ones that put Dubya over the top in the popular vote in 2004. That should give you a clue as to how deep and wide the socialist rot has spread here, and nationwide. But we might have our gay equivalent of the PUMAS headed our way. Please, Mr. Messiah, may we have an organic farm on the White House Lawn?

As The White House Organic Farm project lays out in its plan, the farm should involve school children and Americans with disabilities to help grow the farm’s produce. The farm should also be built with compost from the food waste of the three branches of government. Its produce, in addition to supplying the White House itself, should be delivered by bicycle to local food pantries and schools.
Inauguration day is January 20th, 2009, and it will no doubt be an historic gathering. It is also a good time to begin breaking ground for spring planting. It is my hope that the invitations that go out for the great celebration of this new president will include a note at the bottom indicating “BYOS: Bring Your Own Shovel.”

absolutely nothing... but they do have a song that includes lyrics like "gee if i only had a future, gee if i only had a plan..."

on a side bar, suboptimal came up with redone lyrics for California uber alles" with Juggy as the subject the other day and. GFI may be covering it. if so, it may be appropriate for LGF.

Good Morning LGF.
Nov.9-10 is the anniversary of Kristallnacht which marked the beginning, in Hitler's 1938 Germany, of the wholesale destruction of Jewish synagogues and businesses, the confiscation of their property, and the eventual implementation of the "final solution" - the Holocaust.
While it might be tempting for some to use German language to describe or characterize the policies of President Elect Obama, it would behoove us to exercise restraint in doing so. Not only are such parallels minimal and extremely strained but they tend to diminish the memory of the Holocaust.

When presented with Dear Leader Obadim's 'mandate' I urge you to do as I shall.

Paste on an uncomfortable smile and ruefully say, "I don't care about Dear Leader's mandate. His sexual inclinations should be a private matter between Dear Leader and Most Gracious First Lady. If she doesn't mind, I don't."

It's enough to make one go fishing.

But, what would happen to the Sadie Hawkins' dances?

Question: assuming Drudge is the biggest eyeball-grabber on the net, how do his stats compare to the viewer numbers for CNN? I'm guessing he's way short, but I don't know. Are there any internet "channels" so to speak that can credibly rival the major networks in terms of "viewership" numbers?

Drudge has a short blurb on his site a while back saying that his traffic for October beat out all the major news outlets on the web.

581 goddessoftheclassroom  Mon, Nov 10, 2008 4:04:24am

I've got to go, but I do want to state that those who say that Obama;s "pro-choice" stance doesn't really matter (from Mark Hemingway at NRO)

From "Obama Positioned to Quickly Reverse Bush Actions" in today's WaPo:

Obama himself has signaled, for example, that he intends to reverse Bush's controversial limit on federal funding of embryonic stem cell research, a decision that scientists say has restrained research into some of the most promising avenues for defeating a wide array of diseases, such as Parkinson's.

Bush's August 2001 decision pleased religious conservatives who have moral objections to the use of cells from days-old human embryos, which are destroyed in the process.

But Rep. Diana DeGette (D-Colo.) said that during Obama's final swing through her state in October, she reminded him that because the restrictions were never included in legislation, Obama "can simply reverse them by executive order." Obama, she said, "was very receptive to that." Opponents of the restrictions have already drafted an executive order he could sign.

The new president is also expected to lift a so-called global gag rule barring international family planning groups that receive U.S. aid from counseling women about the availability of abortion, even in countries where the procedure is legal, said Cecile Richards, the president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America. When Bill Clinton took office in 1993, he rescinded the Reagan-era regulation, known as the Mexico City policy, but Bush reimposed it.

Absolutely -- Beer should be a requirement. Maybe the extra day should be a holiday once every 4 years. As it is if you are salaried the company gets an extra day of work out of you during leap years. -- Except for the time spent at the water cooler talking about the extra day of course

An inspirational event for all minorities? For sure.
But living proof of the end of racism in America? Get real.

Well, I really wish they WOULD think that. I mean, as far as I'm concerned racism in America did in fact end a long time ago. Of course it will never be completely gotten rid of, but it's completely fringe now, or would be, except minorities themselves won't let it. Many of them now act increasingly and openly racist themselves, as we see with Jeremiah Wright and LaRaza, etc. But this racism is "acceptable."

Visiting Union Station the other day I saw two interracial couples (black and white) with children in the space of a few seconds. At the WalMart near my dad's I see white/Hispanic and white/black interracial couples all the time. Nobody thinks it's a big deal.

Well I watched as much of the Sunday morning talk shows as I could stand. The hardest question I saw asked of a Democrat was "We you moved to tears Tuesday evening when the election results became official?" The only tough question I saw asked was of the lone Republican they had on to beat up on.

Get used to it folks.

Pravda is celebrating their victory and they are going to have a 4 year slobberfest. Every host is obviously competing for a position with the Obama administration, the "Lewinsky" position.

From what I could see of what little was actually asked, the Dem's want to spend another $50 billion on the auto industry with no strings attached and they have no clue what to do about a Treasury Chief.

The thing is, it's all done under the oversight of Congress, which they control.

If they want to help settle the markets, name a Treasury Chief so the markets know who they are going to be dealing with.

Looks like Obama will use executive orders to get around things like, well, the law.

GOP to Act as 'Check and Balance' Against Obama and Democrats

Meanwhile, Obama's transition chief said the incoming administration is reviewing President Bush's executive orders on stem cell research, oil and gas drilling, and other matters. John Podesta says the idea is that a president can use such orders to move quickly without waiting for Congress to act.

AIG just got another bail out.

U.S. to Pour $40B More Into AIG Bailout

WASHINGTON — The government on Monday provided new financial assistance to troubled insurance giant American International Group, including pouring $40 billion into the company in return for partial ownership.

The action, announced jointly by the Federal Reserve and the Treasury Department, was taken as it became increasingly clear that an original financial lifeline thrown to AIG in September would not be sufficient to stabilize the teetering company. All told, the moves boost aid to the company to around $150 billion.

The $40 billion infusion comes from the recently enacted $700 billion financial bailout package. The government is buying preferred shares of AIG stock, giving taxpayers an ownership stake in the company.

Unfortunately, it is too late to do away with this extra-legal "executive order" business. A sitting president can issue an executive order without ever even revealing what it says. Nobody has the power to review it or overturn it. They've always seemed like the quick road to dictatorship to me.

Hi, I doubt China can afford to buy the US right now

China's export-driven economy is starting to feel the pinch of weakening U.S. and European economies, and the government has already cut key interest rates three times in less than two months in a bid to spur economic expansion.

Economic growth slowed to 9 percent in the third quarter, the lowest level in five years and a sharp decline from last year's 11.9 percent.

That is considered dangerously slow for a government that needs to create jobs for millions of new workers who enter the economy every year and to satisfy a public that has come to expect steadily rising incomes.

But then again...the US might be a bargain buy soon

Anyway

G'day from Down Under to {everyone}

616 TaeJohnDo  Mon, Nov 10, 2008 6:43:52am

A quick Monday morning story. I'd say it is OT, but can anything be OT in an open thread?

So I come home from work one day last week to find the youngest son (age 13) pacing in the kitchen with his hands clasped in a prayer position in front of his chest.

This usually indicates trouble. As in, he is in trouble. The last time he was this way involved a girl, a lunchbox and a one week bus detention.

Before I could even ask, he Blurbs "I feel really bad, Dad, I screwed up."

It seems the BB Gun required reloading. The box spilled, the BBs were every where. But it was where he was reloading the gun. Not on the deck. Not in the garage or basement, no, the boy wonder decides to reload over the sink, on the side with the garbage disposal.

He tells me, in a panic, he doesn't know what to so to get the BBs out of the disposal, so he turned it on...

He said, "BBs were flying out and hitting every where. I watched them come out and I was conflicted -- on the one hand, I thought it was really cool, but I also knew that that was a really bad idea, and I was probably dead."

So, other than they have fresh legs and can go into the basement to get drinks from the second fridge,

Why do we have kids?

What Obama's Victory Means for Racial Politics
By Juan Williams

QUOTE … How does anyone waste time on racial fantasies like reparations for slavery when there is a black man who earned his way into the White House?

Make no mistake, there is still discrimination against people of color in America. And inside black America, there is still disproportionate poverty, school dropouts, criminal activity, incarceration and single motherhood. But with the example of Mr. Obama's achievements, from Harvard Law to the state legislature, U.S. Senate and the White House, the focus of discussion now is how the child of even the most oppressed of racial minorities can maximize his or her strengths and overcome negative stereotypes through achievement. END QUOTE
- - - -
Gee, what a great vision, Juan. Here are some ideas to achieve it:

---let’s invent public housing so even the most poor and oppressed families can have decent places to live at costs they can afford, or even for free

--let’s invent food stamps so no poor and oppressed parent has to tell their child he must go to bed hungry

--let’s invent welfare so that the poor and oppressed can buy more than just food, but also clothing and transportation and other needs

--let’s invent a nation-wide program and call it “Head Start” so poor and oppressed children can get the same kind of pre-school education that rich non-minorities take for granted for their kids

--let’s invent a free-to-all TV program and call it “Sesame Street” so that poor and oppressed kids can get the same kind of literacy coaching at home that rich non-minority kids get from their parents

--let’s invent a program and call it “Affirmative Action” that gives racial preference to poor and oppressed kids and young people to make sure they get into schools and colleges and professional schools, whether or not they’re prepared to succeed there

Uh, what you say, Juan? All that stuff is old ideas? Done already?

Oh. Gee, I’m at a loss then to understand what you mean…………………

When the Republicans were in control of the government lawmakers such as John McCain looked to reach across the aisle to the Democrats. Less than a week after Republicans got thrashed in the latest election, Democrats are wasting no time in strengthening their position and doing what they have to do to stay in power.
