To the United States Marines, a government organization that is actually a force for good in the world...if they didn't exist, we've have to invent them.

Sorry to rain on your parade guys...but as a scrawny nerd who never even went through BMT I feel I gotta ask the vets here...

What exactly inspires you guys to keep on going against all odds, knowing that even a substantial portion of the general populace that you serve resents or otherwise despises you, knowing that your works will probably earn you more revile than respect, and with that nagging feeling that history will (or at least since Vietnam anyway) not remember you fondly?

What keeps you guys fighting?!

This

I'm just trying to be a father
raise a daughter and a son
be a lover to their mother
everything to everyone

Up and at 'em bright and early
I'm all business in my suit
Yeah, I'm dressed up for success
From my head down to my boots

I don't do it for the money
There's bills that I can't pay
I don't do it for the glory
I just do it anyway

Providing for our future's my responsibility
Yeah I'm real good under pressure
Being all that I can be
I can't call in sick on Mondays
When the weekend's been too strong
I just work straight through the holidays
Sometimes all night long

You can bet that I stand ready
when the wolf growls at the door
Yeah I'm solid, yeah I'm steady
Hey I'm true down to the core

And I will always do my duty
No matter what the price
I've counted up the cost
I know the sacrifice
Oh and I don't wanna die for you
But if dying's asked of me
I'll bear that cross with honor
Cause freedom don't come free

I'm an American soldier
An American
Beside my brothers and my sisters
I will proudly take a stand
When liberty's in jeopardy
I'll always do what's right

I'm out here on the front line
sleep in peace tonight
American soldier
I'm an American soldier

I think the majority of the population does support our troops. Those that don't are just very vocal about it.

I don't know what keeps them going, but I would think it would be their deep love of this country and it's ideals- that they may protect Her for their families today and pass it on to their children and grandchildren.

I love this country, and I was not able to sign up after 9/11, though I wanted to serve my country and protect her. I can only imagine this is what keeps our brave men and women going.

God Bless this great land, and God Bless our Troops.

Nope. They were created to deal with the British. Nowadays, we get along fine with Royal Marines.

37 freedombilly  Mon, Nov 10, 2008 4:36:27am

We owe all Marines, past and present, more than they will ever know. I have the opportunity to travel around the world playing music for a living and absolutely none of that would be possible without our armed forces.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart and happy birthday.

38 pfpfutureking  Mon, Nov 10, 2008 4:36:59am

From a Marine to all the devil dogs on the forum, happy birthday :

The USMC is over 230 years of romping, stomping, hell, death and destruction. The finest fighting machine the world has ever seen. We were born in a bomb crater, our mother was an M-16 and our father was the devil.
Each moment that I live is an additional threat upon your life. I am a rough looking, roving soldier of the sea. I am cocky, self-centered, overbearing, and I do not know the meaning of fear, for I am fear itself. I am a green, amphibious monster made of blood and guts who arose from the sea, festering on anti-Americans throughout the globe. Whenever it may arise, and when my time comes, I will die a glorious death on the battle field, giving my life to Mom, the Corps, and the American flag.
We stole the eagle from the Air Force, the anchor from the Navy, and the rope from the Army. On the 7th day, while God rested, we overran his perimeter and stole the globe, and we’ve been running the show ever since. We live like soldiers and talk like sailors and slap the hell out of both of them. Soldier by day, lover by night, drunkard by choice, Marine by the grace of God!

re: #8 BlueCanuck

Weren't they created to deal with the Barbary Pirates?

Fighting the Barbary pirates helped consolidate the early federal powers in order to raise money to build ships to take the fight to them.

Before I get to the replies, was watching CNN International and an article they had on "change.gov" and I think they might have made a Freudian slip...

They displayed a survey that showed only 39% of the populace watch cable news, 29% for network news.

re: #8 BlueCanuck

Weren't they created to deal with the Barbary Pirates?

The United States Marine Corps is in fact the oldest branch of the Armed Forces, in terms of formal date of inception. They were formed in Philadelphia, at Tun Tavern, in 1775 at the direction of the Continental Congress. Hence, technically, the Marines are older than the United States itself.

United States Marine Corps- Wikipedia

The first line of the Marine Corps Hymn,

From the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli

Commemorates the Corps' most distinguished accomplishments of the first century of their existence- storming Chapultepec Palace in Mexico City during th Mexican War of 1848, and their smashing of the Tripolitanian ("Barbary") pirates in 1821-22.

Other interesting facts;

The Marine Corps' motto, Semper Fidelis (Always Faithful) became official in 1883. Prior to that, it had been used for nearly a quarter-century, replacing an early preferred greeting, "Fortitudinus".

USMC Gunnery Sgt. R. Lee Ermey, the more-or-less unofficial spokesman of the Corps, is a twice-wounded and decorated veteran of the Vietnam War.

The last two lines of the Hymn are;

If the Army and the Navy ever look on Heaven's scenes,

They will find the streets are guarded by United States Marines.

Happy Birthday, Marines.

/I have a few relatives who have worn the globe and fouled anchor

cheers

The only three I can recall with significant military service at Washington, US Grant and Teddy Roosevelt. Army all the way.

There was also Dwight D. Eisenhower (formerly General of the Army and Supreme Commander, Allied Forces European Theater in WW II).

Harry S. Truman was a Captain (U.S. Army, AEF, Artillery) in WW I.

Besides U.S. Grant, three other later Presidents served in the Civil War; Chester A. Arthur, James A. Garfield, Benjamin Harrison.

John F. Kennedy, Richard M. Nixon, Lyndon B. Johnson, George H. W. Bush, and Gerald R. Ford all served in the United States Navy in WW II. Jame E. Carter served in the Navy in the 1950s, attaining the rank of Lt. Cmdr. and the command of a diesel-electric submarine (not a nuclear submarine as has often been claimed- but not by him AFAIK).

Ronald Reagan served in the USAAF reserve during WW II, making training films. Our present President, George W. Bush, flew F-102A jet interceptors with the U.S. Air Force.

(Meaning at the Chosin Reservoir, I was at church). Oh, you know what I mean.

One of my uncles (recon) was at the Frozen Chosin. He and his squad spent a week in a cave watching the People's Liberation Army going by on the road at the bottom of a valley. They survived on crackers, water, and just being Marines.

And came back with a real good intel cut on the Order of Battle of the Chinese units they were spying on.

He regarded it as "just another day in the Corps".

Just so everyone gets it right. The United States Marine Corps is a separate service within the Department of the Navy. Marines are not considered sailors nor will they ever be. The Navy has their servicemen and the Marines have theirs. We work very closely with the Navy but have different missions.

Did a little research, and found out why they use a "fouled anchor" (truly a messed up anchor).

Ready?

Because it looks cool.

The Oxford Companion to ships & the sea, edited by Peter Kemp, 1976, has the following explanation:

The use of the foul, or fouled anchor, an abomination to seamen when it occurs in practice, as the seal of the highest office of maritime administration is purely on the grounds of its decorative effect, the rope cable around the shank of the anchor giving a pleasing finish to the stark design of an anchor on its own.

Schwarzenegger has some advice for the GOP:

Schwarzenegger urges GOP to move beyond ideology

Reporting from Sacramento -- In the wake of crushing defeats for Republicans in last week's national elections, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said Sunday that his party should regroup by moving away from some of its core conservative principles and embracing spending on programs that Americans want.

"I think the important thing for the Republican Party is now to also look at other issues that are very important for this country and not to get stuck in ideology," the governor said in an interview broadcast on CNN. "Let's go and talk about healthcare reform. Let's go and . . . fund programs if they're necessary programs and not get stuck just on the fiscal responsibility."

That's good coming from you Arnie, since your State is about bankrupt and is looking for a big handout.

Yep, let's abandon fiscal responsibility and just sent ourselves into oblivion.

Arnold denied rumors that he was going to take a position in the Obama administration.

But he said rumors that he would leave his post as governor to work in the Obama administration were not valid.

That's funny Arnie. Based on your comments it sounds like you already have taken a position.

The "Lewinsky" position.

Just remember to clean up after you are done servicing them.

Just real quick BaseballMom. Nobody was JUST in the Marines. Your Mom and your brother ARE Marines. Time is not a factor. As far as I know the only ones that completed bootcamp or OCS and should not be considered a Marine are Lee H. Oswald and John Murtha.

Just be careful not to confuse artistry with design. IDers (oh yeah, I'm gonna love using that acronym) design consumer products and the means that they can advertise on, among other things. I'm looking to get into cars.

Marine's Prayer

Almighty Father, whose command is over all and whose love never fails, make me aware of Thy presence and obedient to Thy will. Keep me true to my best self, guarding me against dishonesty in purpose and deed and helping me to live so that I can face my fellow Marines, my loved ones, and Thee without shame or fear. Protect my family.

Give me the will to do the work of a Marine and to accept my share of responsibilities with vigor and enthusiasm. Grant me the courage to be proficient in my daily performance. Keep me loyal and faithful to my superiors and to the duties my Country and the Marine Corps have entrusted to me. Help me to wear my uniform with dignity, and let it remind me daily of the traditions which I must uphold.

If I am inclined to doubt, steady my faith; if I am tempted, make me strong to resist; if I should miss the mark, give me courage to try again.

Guide me with the light of truth and grant me wisdom by which I may understand the answer to my prayer.

re: #197 DistantThunder
What an excellent analogy.
It's funny too, because my best friend and I (he was with the 82nd Abn until he became a gunship chopper pilot during Vietnam) were talking about this not too long ago.
There hasn't been a draft since Vietnam. We also haven't had a "major" war since Vietnam (and of course I know about Iraq and Afghanistan but I'm talking about the number of casualties and the duration of the wars themselves; Iraq is at year 5 or so and we've suffered 4,150 or so dead young Americans; Vietnam was 11 years and we suffered 58,000+ dead and over 350,000 wounded. And ANY American military casualty is a reason for sadness for all Americans) BUT - we have helped to raise 2+ generations of young Americans who have never been in the military, much less in combat; it's been some 63 years (end of WWII) since the Nation as a whole "went to war" and we are, therefore faced with a unique situation in American History: I think there are currently more Americans who've never been in the military since any time since Vietnam and yet somehow a disturbingly large percentage of Americans - roughly 40 years of age and under - think that the freedom and prosperity we enjoy are out natural "birthright" or somesuch. And nothing could be further from the truth. And moonbats though they may be, I think - if you listen to ALL the words, this song by CSN really expresses it well:[Link: www.imeem.com...]
For we do indeed find the cost of freedom buried in the ground.
Happy Birthday Marines and
God Bless America.

Juan Williams has a good article in the WSJ Opinion Journal, What Obama's Victory Means for Racial Politics.

The idea of black politics now tilts away from leadership based on voicing grievance, and identity politics based on victimization and anger. In its place is an era in which it is assumed that talented, tough people of any background will find a way to their rightful seat of power in mainstream political life.

The Jesse Jacksons, Al Sharptons and Rev. Jeremiah Wrights remain. But their influence and power fade to a form of nostalgia in a world of larger political agendas, such as a common American vision of setting the nation on a steady economic course and dealing with terrorists. The market has irrevocably shrunk for Sharpton-style tirades against "the man" and "the system." The emphasis on racial threats and extortion-like demands -- all aimed at maximizing white guilt as leverage for getting government and corporate money -- has lost its moment. How does anyone waste time on racial fantasies like reparations for slavery when there is a black man who earned his way into the White House?

Let us hope.

Jefferson most certainly DID negotiate with the Bashaw of Tripoli via US Consul General to North Africa, Tobias Lear who signed the Treaty of Triploi ending the Barbary War and selling out William Eaton and the Marines who made their assault upon "the shores of Tripoli"

I don't doubt that the detainees can be held securely here in the U.S. That's not what worries me. What worries me is that war must now be a court proceeding - evidence must be properly collected, terrorists must be read their rights, and a civilian prosecution must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that they have committed a crime, subject to endless appeals. LOL. Curly fries....

It just feels funny....my dad is being very generous. I'm scaling it down as best as I can.

Hey! Have a "Japanese Theme" wedding - it's customary for guests to bring special envelopes in which there is at least 10,000 yen (about $100) as a "congratulations and thanks for inviting me to the wedding" gift.

You'd just have to find someone who could help you get into a multi-layered wedding kimono...

(there are actually people who are licensed kimono dressers in Japan...)

Juan does very well as far as Democrats go. He says Obama won a 75% majority, when the electoral vote is not quite 70% and the popular vote less than 55%. He speaks of lingering bigotry against minorities, but, of course, apparently no one hates "white" people. Being a Democrat, Juan has a problem being accurate occasionally.

The plans are coming along - slowly. I just received a quote from the place I really fell in love with and it came in a little high. Times are tough financially for us so it's hard to plan an expensive party while going through our current situation....

The Mrs. and I paid for our own wedding and reception. Cake, cookies, finger sandwiches and pop in the church basement. It was quite nice and we are just as married as if we had spent $30,000.

25 years and still counting.

Sometimes the smaller weddings are the best.

Speaking of which, I notice The One did not go to church yesterday. He worked out and then watched the Bears get beat by the Titans.

Well, that's as much of a Sunday ritual as going to church.

For years my youngest son stated he wanted to be a Marine. (The commercial where the Marine used a sword made quite an impression on him.) I even asked him if he wanted to be a Marine Pilot at least, and he said no, he wanted to be a Regular Marine.

Then, in the third grade he came home and asked “Is it true? Marines can’t live at home and have to move out of state?” When this was confirmed, he was crest fallen. He wanted to be a Marine, but only if he didn’t have to move, He has a hard time with change.

Semper Fi, Mac, may the USMC always serve the nation with the dignity and honor so richly earned from past sacrifice.

This weekend, six Marines from Camp Pendleton, who were likely enjoying their well-earned long weekend, raced through a burning motel warning sleeping guests that it was on fire. All hotel guests escaped unharmed, thanks to their actions. One elderly man was carried out by a Marine.

Yes, at war or at peace, the U.S. Marines stand on guard for you.

Some unsolicited advice - Remember it is about the two of you, not anyone else..0, 10, 100 guests cannot change that. Many people wake up the next morning with "buyer's remorse" - for spending all the money on the wedding/reception, not for their spouse (although I guess some people have that too!) Good luck

Semper Fi and Happy Birthday to all of my fellow Marines. Even though I got out in 94 it still feels like yesterday that I was a proud Lady Leatherneck . . . . . Remember, the Marines are not only looking for a few good men, they need a few good women, too!

I saw this years ago in Leatherneck Magazine. I'm not sure who wrote it but I've always liked it.

MARINE

You earned the title "Marine" upon graduation from recruit training.
It wasn't willed to you.
It wasn't a gift.

Happy Birthday Marines!
A special "shout out" to the Chosin Marines which included my dearly departed friend and mentor, Lt. Col. Olin L. Beall and the Baker Company, lst Motor Transport. (Repost from last night)

"On December 2, in temperatures that reached minus 24 degrees, U.S. Marine Lt. Col. Olin L. Beall, 52 years old and a 30-year veteran, went out on the reservoir ice for 12 hours with Pfc. Ralph Milton and Corpsman Oscar Biebinger (by midday, three more men had joined) and searched for survivors, despite sniper and automatic-weapons fire. They brought 319 men into Hagaru-ri. The next morning, after rescuing four more men on the reservoir, Beali went alone and unarmed to the silent string of trucks. He walked the length of the convoy and saw the wounded now lying frozen in each vehicle. No one was alive."

I've never been fortunate enough to know a United States Marine, but the Royal Marines I've know have been amongst the most faithful, reliable and brave men I've had the privilege of calling friends.

I'm sure their fellow-servicemen with the funny salute are just as capable on and off the battlefield.

Oh, and there may never have been a president from the USMC, but there was a viceroy of Bosnia from the Royal Marines (Paddy Ashdown, who had the sort of career that would make some fictional characters jealous).

324 chedub  Mon, Nov 10, 2008 10:49:26am

I've always loved this speech comparing the branches and praising the Marines.

A speech by Radm J. Stark, USN, President of the Naval War College, made in Newport, RI on 10 Nov 1995...

It occurred to me that the services could be characterized by different breeds of dogs.

The Air Force reminded me of a French Poodle. The poodle always looks perfect...sometimes a bit pampered and always travels first class. But don't ever forget that the poodle was bred as a hunting dog and in a fight it's very dangerous.

The Army is kind of like a St. Bernard. It's big and heavy and sometimes seems a bit clumsy. But it's very powerful and has lots of stamina. So you want it for the long haul.

The Navy, God bless us, is a Golden Retriever. They're good natured and great around the house. The kids love' em. Sometimes their hair is a bit long...they go wandering off for long periods of time, and they love water.

Marines I see as two breeds, Rottweilers or Dobermans, because Marines come in two varieties, big and mean or skinny and mean. They're aggressive on the attack and tenacious on defense. They've got really short hair and they always go for the throat. That sound like a Marine to me!

So what I really like about Marines is that first to fight isn't just a motto, it's a way of life. From the day they were formed at Tun Tavern 221 years ago, Marines have distinguished themselves on battlefields around the world. From the fighting tops of the Bonhomme Richard, to the sands of Barbary coast, from the swamps of New Orleans to the halls of Montezuma, from Belleau Wood, to the Argoone Forest, to Guadalcanal, and Iwo Jima, and Okinawa and Inchon, And Chosin Reservoir and Hue City and Quang Tri and Dong Ha, and Beirut, and Grenada, and Panama, and Somalia and Bosnia and a thousand unnamed battlefields in godforsaken corners of the globe. Marines have distinguished themselves by their bravery, and stubbornness and aggressive spirit, and sacrifice, and love of country, and loyalty to on another.

They've done it for you and me, and this country we all love so dearly. They asked for nothing more than honor of being a United States Marine. That's why I like Marines!

328 freeus  Mon, Nov 10, 2008 12:29:19pm

I have no words to properly thank the Marines for what they do each, and every day for myself, my family and our nation. To say we love you, thank you, and are so proud of you does not in any way convey the true depth of our love and respect for the U.S. Marines.

May God keep you safe. May you feel our love as you are in some far away place, and are separated from you families. May God bless you, and your families for being being so self denying that you would volunteer to go out, and defeat the evils of this world, and give much desired peace where it did not exist. You are the heart beat of this nation. You make us strong, and proud of our military.

We in no way could ever repay you for loving us and America so much that you volunteered to lay down your life for us and this nation. We could never repay you for the good you have contributed to this world! You have liberated millions all over the world. Each generation of Marines has risen up to smite oppressors who would deny a child food, life and joy. How great is that!

So, happy birthday Marines and long may you be around! We are nothing without you!

Husband a Vietnam Vet Marine, father-in-law one of the Korean Chosin Few... ARRUGHAH!

On November 10, 1775 the United States Marine Corps was officially formed by a vote of the Continental Congress. Captain Samuel Nicholas was named the first Commandant of the Marine Corps. Robert Mullan was appointed to raise two companies of Marines. Mullan was also the proprietor of Tun Tavern which had a long reputation for having the best beer in Philadelphia. So it was that the very first Continental Marines were recruited in Tun Tavern, and it became the birthplace of the U.S. Marine Corps.
Marines have a long tradition of remembering their roots, and Nov. 10 is a date remembered every year wherever there are Marines. On that day all Marines remember Tun Tavern. Fittingly enough for Marines over the centuries since, many of whom have earned something of a reputation as strong drinkers, the name of the tavern originates from the name for a special kind of old English beer barrel called a tun. Nicholas and Mullen immediately began recruiting Marines, and legend has it that free beer was offered to new recruits as soon as they signed the contract. The Navy had just been created about a month earlier on October 13, 1775, and Marines were needed aboard the new ships. Congress voted that all Marine Officers should have the same rank structure and pay as equivalent ranks in the “land service” (Army).
Almost from the very start, every Marine was a rifleman, and marksmanship from the yardarms or crow’s nest was a famed early Marine skill. Shooting accurately from high in the rigging during boardings and close ship to ship fighting Marine sharp-shooting became legendary by the end of the time of the great sailing ships. Marine officers to this day wear a special cover (hat for you landlubbers) which distinguishes them from above to identify them to their sharpshooters in close on deck fighting.
During the Revolution Marines captured or made successful hit and run assaults on several British positions both in the Caribbean, and the British Isles including the only successful incursions on British soil in over 700 years. In 1776 Nicholas’s Marines captured Nassau in the Bahamas. They took Fort Montagu, captured the British Governor, and brought back numerous cannon and thousands of shells for the American cause. Nicholas was promoted to Major after this victory. Marines fought successfully on the Isle of Jersey, and Marines under John Paul Jones landed at Whitehaven where they burned shipping and captured Lord Selkirk’s family silver. They were attempting to capture Lord Selkirk himself to trade for American war prisoners, but he wasn’t home. From then, Marines have distinguished themselves in every American engagement of any size or duration, and it all started at Tun Tavern (sometimes spelled Tunn Tavern) in Philadelphia in 1775. If you live anywhere near a base that houses Marines, and you are up early in the morning, you might hear them singing as they are on their morning run, “Back in 1775. My Marine Corps came alive.

re: #11 laZardo

...

Our work brings us respect from our enemies, our companions, and our friends, those who know what we do. The others are bystanders, and their opinion, built on ignorance and disbelief, is that, their opinion, and the world will forget it. We're happy to provide the freedom for them to express it, because we understand that one of the best ways to insure our freedoms is to give them to others. History will remember us as those who willed to put their lives on the line for others, as well as our brothers and sisters in the Corps.

Not all Marines are Christian, but they know this to be true: "... This is my commandment: love one another, as I have loved you. There is no greater love than this, that a man should lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends, if you do what I command you. ..." John 15:12...

We use a fouled anchor to remind ourselves that that is when we're going to be called: when the world's messed up, it will be Uncle Sam's Misguided Children sent to break things, kick ass, take names, and set things to rights.

You asked "what keeps you fighting"; we received freedom as a gift from those who came before us, appreciate it, and feel a need to "pay it forward". (Scratch a Marine and you'll find an idealist or a romantic or both.) As a recruit, you pour your idealism and teenage immortality into the Corps, and then you can draw on it for the rest of your life, whenever you need it. Even when maybe you shouldn't or don't (ask any old Marine's wife!)

"Happy Birthday!" to my brothers and sisters in the Corps, past, present, and future, and "Thank You" to the Marine Moms and Dads; without you, we would not make it.

Thank you, too, to all of you who've thanked us over the years. It was an honor and a pleasure.

Semper Fi!
