Audio: The Devil in Dover

Science | Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 4:13:56 pm PST

Here’s an interesting podcast from the San Francisco Chronicle, featuring an interview with journalist Laurie Lebo, author of The Devil in Dover: An Insider’s Story of Dogma v. Darwin in Small-town America.

Lebo grew up in a small town near Dover, Pennsylvania, where in 2004 the Board of Education tried to sneak creationism into science classes under the disguise of “intelligent design,” aided by the Discovery Institute. Her own father was an evangelical Christian vehemently opposed to Darwin’s theory of evolution, and she discusses the effect the trial had on her relationship with him.

Judge John E. Jones, a life-long Republican appointed by George W. Bush, absolutely destroyed the “intelligent design” side in his decision, excoriating the school board and their attorneys for the “breathtaking inanity” of their attempts to lie about their religious agenda. The decision is one of the most entertaining, well-written legal documents you’ll ever read: Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District.

If you’re interested in learning more about this landmark case, I also recommend Monkey Girl: Evolution, Education, Religion, and the Battle for America’s Soul by Edward Humes, and The Battle Over the Meaning of Everything: Evolution, Intelligent Design, and a School Board in Dover, PA by science writer Gordy Slack.

OT:

I've noted a lot of press about how "Obama ran a tight disciplined campaign", "ran a fantastic campaign", "kept campaign on message" etc. etc.etc. as why he won.

Being FLUSHED DOWN MEMORY LANE right before our eyes by the msm is the fact that he ran the dirtiest campain in U.S. history, with massive credit card fraud, massive voter registration fraud, and God knows what else.

This should not be permitted to happen.

Stop the leftist rewriting of the narrative by keeping this issue on the front burner until it is burned so thoroughly into the search engines and archive.org that it will notbe forgotten by 2010 or 2012....

For those wondering where I got "creationism" as a force that brought down the Republican Party in California, here is an article form the NYT in 1993 on one such battle that happened locally.

This happened at the time when socons started a campaign to purge the party in California of "liberals" amd "country club" Republicans, and when they ran socon candidates for a variety of positions, making sure the candidates ran as moderate republicans.

Look at California now - no one has benefited from the "purification" of the party that occurred back then. Republicans suffered in numbers and the state is suffering under a Democratic monopoly in the legislature.

And while Vista is/was a fairly conservative place, the creationists that got on that board did not represent the typical household in the area.

If the Republicans have a purity purge, they can see their future in California.

The problem isn't religion, or this or that tenet thereof. The problem is that a certain group (Discovery Institute) is on record (the Wedge Document) as wanting to establish a fundamentalist Christian hegemony in America, and (on record, again) is using the push to get I.D. taught as a science in science classes ... in order to further that overall agenda.

For context, I am something of a "extremely-long-term creationist", in that I believe God triggered the creation -- call it a Big Bang, who th' heck knows. I believe evolution is one of God's tools. I believe that I.D. has absolutely NO place in the science classroom. I believe that pushing Christian doctrine into the classroom is equivalent, in its own way, to imposition of Islamist Sharia. While I'm adamantly against teaching creationism or any religion in science classrooms, it is important to mention dissenting ideas and to encourage students to enter the sciences by presenting the anomalies, mysteries, and challenges facing scientists. Otherwise, Science education will be reduced to memorizing vocabulary lists.

I'm currently reading an interesting book called "The Future and its Enemies" (1998) by Virginia Postrel that describes the conflict between creative scientists and dogmatic "technocrats."

For example, here are some You Tube videos demonstrating how scientific prejudice works in Astronomy.

Slightly OT:

For her Psych & Religion class at UC Santa Cruz, my daughter wrote a story for the assignment "Your Personal Myth" using the premise of a solar-system-scale catastrophe and how Earth's inhabitants would react. One of the threads of the story is that she decides to commandeer a spaceship and go talk to God face-to-face, on the theory that if the Universe is expanding, then God must be out there in the whatever the Universe is expanding into. It makes for a neat sci-fi story, but also a surprisingly moving spiritual account of how she comes to grips with the mortality of humankind -- and herself.

There were plenty of "anomalies, mysteries, and challenges" in my 50's science classes. We didn't need religion to discern them.

More than any objection to tainting science with religion ... the closer one pushes religion toward the compromises required in governance, the more corrupt religion becomes. That is precisely the most enormous problem facing Islam today. Since the beginning of the Medina Era, it has become corrupted by too much contact with the secular.

Creationists are absolutely SCREWING their own religion. They themselves will be the death of it, and they don't have a frickin' CLUE that they're doing it.

The fact that I post dozens and dozens of stories that have nothing to do with creationism never stops people from telling me I'm "obsessed" about the subject. Every time I post anything about it, no matter how much other content I put up, I get email like this:

They invariably claim not to care about the subject, but they are invariably on the side of the creationists. It's a sleazy guilt-trip tactic to try to get me to shut up about this subject.

Not gonna work.

Yet....for all those people claiming they don't like LGF 'as much" anymore (due to evolution threads), every time you open registration, you get a hundred new lizards in about a nanosecond.

Ironically, some plasma cosmologists claim that the big bang is "stealth creationism!" What they need now is a court to rule in their favor.

What you are calling stealth creationism here is not what was called creationism in Dover or by the discovery instititute. In reference to the disucssion on LGF the cosmologist were either using the term creationism in terms of science or using it in terms of politics. They probably were using it in terms of science without any regard to the court cases.

You reference to it then would be a 'strawman'? Was that your intent? Or are you just throwing wet sticks in the fire til one burns.

BTW - for anyone who thinks that shoving Intelligent Design down the throats of Americans via public schools is a GREAT way to win back the White House and win a supermajority in both houses (and fulfill every other political fantasy), they might want to take a look at this article from 1993 which provided a mainstream rallying cry of the then-dead left in California.

It got play in the Village Voice and the Nation and then entered into various education journals. Nothing like creating an irrational boogie man for your enemies to unite against. Especially when that boogie man offers no chance of surviving the next election cycle (2 of the 3 stealth socons that landed on the Vista School Board lasted a whopping 2 years).

But hey, the left uses the incident to raise money and elect candidates across this state TO THIS DAY.

I've read parts of the Miller book. "Lying for Jesus" is probably an appropriate description. Well we know it is because they are weak in their faith and feel the need to overcompensate by getting their neighbors to agree to their views by bullying. Even if they don't understand their beliefs completely themselves.

It brings to mind to me what are they trying to steal? This is how thieves operate. And when they get caught. Total Denial. Even in the face of video evidence.

Anthropologically, I believe they have embraced a culture that can't evolve into modern times and eventually genetically weans itself out of business. History is littered with cultures that crept away shocked by more advanced cultures. Couldn't cope. What that need to do is find the modern that they can grasp and integrate themselves with it.

And of the dozen scientists that I know personally, they have not once tried to tell me that their field of work is there to contradict religion. If they do it like in Washington state, they will let bad ballots from Democrats be re canvassed post elections with the correction to the democrate made legal. Or they will "Discover" ballots behind something in the Democrat district. All the time ignoring ACORN and ACORN like activities. And they will do this til they get the votes. Then they will give the Republicans a shortened time span to contest the recounts, and move through the court system on technicalities to say "Voting over, Case Closed, Your lead is now gone, you lose, be a good citizen now and don't ask any more questions" Slade Gorton lost that way. Dino Rossi lost that way. If the election is close the Democrat will try and steal it.

No. Just, no. They didn't lie in His name. They lied to promote themselves, and that's not what Jesus Christ is all about.

That's true but I think they think of themselves as representing Christ's work. The lieing is a sin. A bigger one to me if they pretend to advocate Christ's work in the process. If it is just about the one person. Then that is their problem.

For me though, I would say they are really working the hand of the Devil. Capital D. The people who get upset about this and can't resolve it should be asking themselves what religious side they are really on. You can be a YEC'er and be productive in life. But the ones we see complaining here and the ones in court are not productive.

They invariably claim not to care about the subject, but they are invariably on the side of the creationists. It's a sleazy guilt-trip tactic to try to get me to shut up about this subject.

I'm not so sure it will be a bad thing if Helen, David Gregory, et al stick around. The bias has been pretty obvious to most of us over the years, but the exposure will come full circle when j-whore-nalists are writhing in ecstasy on the press room floor.

The "Helen" we have just removed.

re: #244 lone_wolf_in_illinois

It's certainly not wrong to question Obama's intentions vis a vis Israel. Where you'd be over the line would be if you expected him to put Israel's interests ahead of those of the United States. That would be wrong if he did. His oath is to protect the United States.

That said, it is generally the case that American and Israeli interests coincide, especially if you take a long term view of those interests. It would never be in the interests of the United States to permit the destruction of Israel. What happens to Israel (the Little Satan) will ultimately happen to the United States (the Great Satan).

Our defensive posture should take this into account. Whether that means expanding our nuclear umbrella or not is an open question. I don't know that setting that policy in stone is helpful to us or the Israelis. Sometimes implicit threats are better than explicit threats.

OTOH, don't I recall a Democrat (John Kerry?) making explicit reference to Israel's nuclear capability? This certainly hurt both the US and Israeli interests. Israel's ambiguity on this issue is in both parties interests, while openly admiting Israel is a nuclear power would make America's position vis a vis Iran more difficult.

As far as to whether or not you pay too much attention to it is really subjective. It isn't a sign you are as nuts as the L³ were about Iraq. unless you start calling for the military defeat of Israel and the United States. Then you'd be getting there.

Broun cited a July speech by Obama that has circulated on the Internet in which the then-Democratic presidential candidate called for a civilian force to take some of the national security burden off the military.

"That's exactly what Hitler did in Nazi Germany and it's exactly what the Soviet Union did," Broun said. "When he's proposing to have a national security force that's answering to him, that is as strong as the U.S. military, he's showing me signs of being Marxist."

I don't really think that will happen. That said we need to make sure we win any run-off in Georgia and do not let Franken steal the election in Mn. We still should have 43 seats in the Senate. That should be enough to prevent Obama's worst scheme, if really bad ones emerge. For now, we need to figure out our own agenda going forwards. And it can't just be "Not Obama!"

I am really getting to feel bad vibes about those announced as staff and cabinet members for the "Mighty O". McCain sounded more bi-partisan from the start of the election and I feel no comfort on who has been announced as Obama's staff. Hunker down, mates!

America Serves

"When you choose to serve -- whether it's your nation, your community or simply your neighborhood -- you are connected to that fundamental American ideal that we want life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness not just for ourselves, but for all Americans. That's why it's called the American dream."

The Obama Administration will call on Americans to serve in order to meet the nation’s challenges. President-Elect Obama will expand national service programs like AmeriCorps and Peace Corps and will create a new Classroom Corps to help teachers in underserved schools, as well as a new Health Corps, Clean Energy Corps, and Veterans Corps. Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by setting a goal that all middle school and high school students do 50 hours of community service a year and by developing a plan so that all college students who conduct 100 hours of community service receive a universal and fully refundable tax credit ensuring that the first $4,000 of their college education is completely free. Obama will encourage retiring Americans to serve by improving programs available for individuals over age 55, while at the same time promoting youth programs such as Youth Build and Head Start.

He thinks this is a Monopoly game...every time you pass go, collect a new service...it's free!

Obama's domestic security thing is about helping old ladies cross the street and planting trees. It's not a new military wing.

Here's what the Big O said:

We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we've set," Obama said in July. "We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded.

'Nuff said.

#384 Iron Fist

Hitler made the same kind of statements about Germany and the Nazi Party. Something to the effect that the Nazis had effectively replaced the Weimar Republic with the Party apparatus before they won power, and that it was a trivial matter to sweep what was left away immediately on gaining Power.

If there were such a thing as a political spectrum going from freedom to socialism/communism, I'm wondering where we'd be on that line. I'm preaching to the choir here, but obviously a very, very large portion of our population (52%) does not know history, which means the inevitable doom of it being repeated.

There is a good thing about the election of Obama. We essentially gave the middle finger to Europe.

Europe is quietly racist. They were absolutely stunned at our election. They NEVER thought he would win. Even though most (if not all) of us don't agree with his policies, electing a black president in a country like ours is a big deal. It says something about our electoral process. It didn't matter about skin color. This country voted in a man who it thinks will do the best job (weather we agree or not).

Larger countries in Europe would never be able to elect a black president. It showed the rest of the world that we have a wonderful election process and we will indeed look past race and elect who we think will do the best job. I don't agree with Obama on anything, however, he did win the majority and that says something about our country. It was a big F U to the rest of the world and those who think we are a bunch of racist rednecks.
