In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army

IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

McCrae's "In Flanders Fields" remains to this day one of the most memorable war poems ever written. It is a lasting legacy of the terrible battle in the Ypres salient in the spring of 1915. Here is the story of the making of that poem:
Although he had been a doctor for years and had served in the South African War, it was impossible to get used to the suffering, the screams, and the blood here, and Major John McCrae had seen and heard enough in his dressing station to last him a lifetime.

As a surgeon attached to the 1st Field Artillery Brigade, Major McCrae, who had joined the McGill faculty in 1900 after graduating from the University of Toronto, had spent seventeen days treating injured men -- Canadians, British, Indians, French, and Germans -- in the Ypres salient.

It had been an ordeal that he had hardly thought possible. McCrae later wrote of it:

"I wish I could embody on paper some of the varied sensations of that seventeen days... Seventeen days of Hades! At the end of the first day if anyone had told us we had to spend seventeen days there, we would have folded our hands and said it could not have been done."

One death particularly affected McCrae. A young friend and former student, Lieut. Alexis Helmer of Ottawa, had been killed by a shell burst on 2 May 1915. Lieutenant Helmer was buried later that day in the little cemetery outside McCrae's dressing station, and McCrae had performed the funeral ceremony in the absence of the chaplain.

The next day, sitting on the back of an ambulance parked near the dressing station beside the Canal de l'Yser, just a few hundred yards north of Ypres, McCrae vented his anguish by composing a poem. The major was no stranger to writing, having authored several medical texts besides dabbling in poetry.

In the nearby cemetery, McCrae could see the wild poppies that sprang up in the ditches in that part of Europe, and he spent twenty minutes of precious rest time scribbling fifteen lines of verse in a notebook.

A young soldier watched him write it. Cyril Allinson, a twenty-two year old sergeant-major, was delivering mail that day when he spotted McCrae. The major looked up as Allinson approached, then went on writing while the sergeant-major stood there quietly. "His face was very tired but calm as we wrote," Allinson recalled. "He looked around from time to time, his eyes straying to Helmer's grave."

When McCrae finished five minutes later, he took his mail from Allinson and, without saying a word, handed his pad to the young NCO. Allinson was moved by what he read:

"The poem was exactly an exact description of the scene in front of us both. He used the word blow in that line because the poppies actually were being blown that morning by a gentle east wind. It never occurred to me at that time that it would ever be published. It seemed to me just an exact description of the scene."

In fact, it was very nearly not published. Dissatisfied with it, McCrae tossed the poem away, but a fellow officer retrieved it and sent it to newspapers in England. The Spectator, in London, rejected it, but Punch published it on 8 December 1915.

I will stop as many times as I can today to pay tribute. From those who have given their lives to those who were lucky enough to come home, we owe them everything. And for those serving us right now, we salute you.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area on this gloriously sunny and bright morning. President Bush will be in town to accept an award from the Intrepid museum and partake in the reopening week festivities. So, if you're in the city and need to get around, stay away from the West Side as there will be closures and diversions.

With all my heart, Thank you veterans.

Well shoot - took me so long to type this that Charles has put up a Veterans Day thread already! Sorry for the re-post y'all but:
Good Morning all y'all - from a COLD (37 degrees going up to 60 degrees) but bright and sunny Charlotte!
I hope you all are doing well today and I want to extend my wishes to all y'all for a Happy Veterans Day - and especially to all my fellow veteran lizards and to those currently serving our nation in uniform.
Gotta run walk hobble outside now to put up our Flag,
but
If you would like to have your very own "Old Glory" flying on your monitor (you can locate it anywhere you want to - I have it just above my System Tray on the right side, natch!) FOR FREE, it's only about 3/4" by 3/4" and can be made darker or lighter in color and can be waiving in the virtual breeze or just flat, please go to: [Link: [Link: www.deskflag.com...]...]
and download it - it's pretty light on memory and just - well it's almost as good as putting out the real Flag every single time you have the puter open!
Oh and did I mention it's FREE?!? LOL!
AGAIN, Happy Veterans Day I'll be back right after I put out our real Old Glory!

The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

Armistice Day as well. Rememberance Day. Poppie Day.

Armistice Day is the anniversary of the symbolic end of World War I on 11 November 1918. It commemorates the armistice signed between the Allies and Germany at Rethondes, France, for the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front, which took effect at eleven o'clock in the morning — the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month".

American Soldier

I will always do my duty
No matter what the price
I've counted up the cost
I know the sacrifice

Oh and I don't wanna die for you
But if dying's asked of me
I'll bear that cross with honor
Cause freedom don't come free

18 NYCHardhat  Tue, Nov 11, 2008 6:29:23am

This day began as a rememberance of the end of the Great War, the War to End All Wars. Let us all remember especially that it did not end all wars. That nothing can.

As long as people are human, we will have evil. And there will be those that seek to oppress, so there MUST be those that stand ready to resist them.

Here's to those that defend.

AMERICA ANSWERS - IN FLANDERS FIELD

Rest ye in peace, ye Flanders dead.
The fight that ye so bravely led
We've taken up. And we will keep
True faith with you who lie asleep
With each a cross to mark his bed,
In Flanders fields.
Fear not that ye have died for naught.
The torch ye threw to us we caught.
Ten million hands will hold it high,
And Freedom's light shall never die!
We've learned the lesson that ye taught
In Flanders fields.

The Soldier

If I should die, think only this of me:
That there's some corner of a foreign field
That is for ever England. There shall be
In that rich earth a richer dust concealed;
A dust whom England bore, shaped, made aware,
Gave, once, her flowers to love, her ways to roam,
A body of England's, breathing English air,
Washed by the rivers, blest by suns of home.

And think, this heart, all evil shed away,
A pulse in the eternal mind, no less
Gives somewhere back the thoughts by England given;
Her sights and sounds; dreams happy as her day;
And laughter, learnt of friends; and gentleness,
In hearts at peace, under an English heaven.

Rupert Brooke, 1887-1915

We aren't no thin red 'eroes, nor we aren't no blackguards too,
But single men in barricks, most remarkable like you;
An' if sometimes our conduck isn't all your fancy paints,
Why, single men in barricks don't grow into plaster saints;

While it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, fall be'ind",
But it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind,

The Greatest Generation had nothing on our WWI vets.

-Twice as many soldiers died in one year of WWI as in ten years in Vietnam.

-A third of the American soldiers who returned from France had venereal disease (this was before modern antibiotics-when treatment options were painfully limited)

-Returning soldiers were greeted by race riots, joblessness, and a raging influenza epidemic.

-Oh and while the soldiers were gone, Congress outlawed beer.

One of the things that conservatives can do is to encourage their sons and daughters to pursue the Military as a career. Too often families just don't think of talking up military service in their homes or schools.

'When I grow up, I want to be a soldier' is a grand dream for a youngster. Help them pursue it.

For several days leading up to November 11th, Canadians wear poppies pinned to their lapels as a public display of remembrance.
At 11:00am today Canadians stop whatever they are doing to observe a moment of silence as a common sign of our respect and gratitude. And at ceremonies across the nation Canadians hear the playing of The Last Post.

Also, for all those LGFers in the British Commonwealth who are today observing Remembrance Day, we extend our thanks and gratitude to the brave men & women who have served in uniform around the world.

In Flanders Fields
written in 1915 by John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Oh my gosh - that is a WONDERFUL piece ! from the link .....

The Next Time: You experience a rush of road rage because you are behind a hesitant and slow elderly driver on the interstate, a man so shriveled with age that you can’t even see his head above the headrest, consider the possibility that, as a young man, he sat tall and strong as he maneuvered a U.S. Army tank across the desolate battlefields of Europe under the command of Gen. George S. Patton

Thank you!

Excellent thread. We owe the fact that we can come here and have our political discussion and not go to prison to the fine men and women who have served the Republic so well. Most of the people in the World are less free than we are. That is something to keep in mind in the months and years ahead of us in the Obama Administration. Lightly surrendered freedoms are very difficult to recover if it proves to have been a mistake to surrender them.

Obama may or may not be the Second Coming of Benito Mussolini, but one thing is sure. He is one of the biggest jackasses to ever ascend to the Presidency. This when Bush is bending over backwards to ensure Obama a smooth transition of power. Sometimes it just doesn't pay to be nice to people.

Obama ran to the press after their first meeting, too, when O was a junior Senator.

Obama said that Bush was all smiles, and then turned "downright frightening" when they started discussing issues.

"Suddenly it felt as if somebody in a back room had flipped a switch," Obama wrote. "The president's eyes became fixed; his voice took on the agitated, rapid tone of someone neither accustomed to nor welcoming interruption; his easy affability was replaced by an almost messianic certainty. As I watched my mostly Republican Senate colleagues hang on his every word, I was reminded of the dangerous isolation that power can bring, and appreciated the Founders' wisdom in designating a system to keep power in check."

When I quoted from this passage to Bush during an Oval Office interview, the president seemed irritated to learn he had been taken to task by the senator he once counseled.

I thought I was actually showing some kindness," Bush said indignantly. "And out of that he came with this belief?"

The president added with a bit of a scowl: "He doesn't know me very well."

God bless all those who serve, those who have served in the past, those who never made it home.

I love you.

I echo mama winger's post. Thank you, veterans, for all that you do and have done to secure the freedoms we Americans and others enjoy.

My father was a WWII Navy veteran who served in the Pacific. I never bothered to thank him while he was alive for his service to our country. I grew up in the 60's & 70's and was a "peacenik" for so many years. Since those days of my wanderings in the liberal desert, I have thankfully come to my senses and now I see the many virtues of this great country that I took for granted for so long. And America's finest men and women who serve and have served in our military and who are willing to put their lives at risk to secure our freedoms is the best gift any American can receive. I honor your service to our country today.

And as a way to honor my father and our current troops returning home from overseas, I have decided to join Operation Welcome Home. This is a way that I can show my appreciation for all those brave men and women who serve our country. Thank you, Daddy. And thank you veterans. You are my heroes.

One of the things that conservatives can do is to encourage their sons and daughters to pursue the Military as a career. Too often families just don't think of talking up military service in their homes or schools.

'When I grow up, I want to be a soldier' is a grand dream for a youngster. Help them pursue it.

I won't get Gore-ish and say the election was stolen, but particularly in the house/senate races, we have MAJOR problems that must be addressed in the next to years.

re: #174 Dianna

Except Tommy hardly needs updating.

Outside the house Mr. Simpson announced
That Sally couldn't go to the meeting
He went on cleaning his blue Rolls Royce
And she ran inside weeping.
She got to her room and tears splashed the picture
Of the new Messiah.
She picked up the book of her father's dreams
and threw it on the fire.

She knew from the start
Deep down in her heart
That she and Obama were worlds apart.
But her mother said, "Never mind. Your part
Is to be what you'll be".

The theme of the sermon was 'Come Unto Me,
Hope Will Find A Way',
So Sally decided to ignore her dad,
And sneak out anyway.
She spent all afternoon getting ready,
And decided she'd try to touch him.
Maybe he'd see that she was free
and talk to her this Sunday.

She knew from the start
Deep down in her heart
That she and Obama were worlds apart.
But her mother said, "Never mind. Your part
Is to be what you'll be".

Flying into a hot LZ on a big ole LOUD Huey with that Cross painted on it (so the Viet Cong/NVA could better aim at your chopper), taking more fire thanin any three missions than I did the entire time I was there, is a true example of American bravery and heroism. Finest kind.

I posted a link in last night's "Black Helicopters" thread to a news article reporting that every batch of "found" votes reduces Coleman's lead. 100 ballots--apparently marked by the voting machine with Sunday's date--were found, and all were for Franken, and an elections worker found 32 absentee ballots in her car, all for Franken.

Nope, nothing suspicious there. It's even more blatant than the Washington governor's race, where each recount reduced the gap, until on the third recount the Democrat won by a slim margin, and then recounts were halted. Naturally; keep counting until you get the desired result.

Same thing in Florida, except SCOTUS stopped the endless recounts.

And there were multiple reports of Dem recounters shaking the cards and being rough with them, flicking at the chads to get them to fall out, there were chads all over the floor after each recount, they found a stack with the chads taped back into the Bush places and the chads removed from the Gore places, not to mention the voting machine (with which one could create endless new vote cards) found in the car of a Dem election "official".

Most of the greens and libs believe we pay far to little for gas and wish the price to remain permanently high to incite sustainable alternative energy supplies. My sister and I had the conversation years ago and she wanted gas 4 bucks a gallon. I advocate the Paris Hilton plan; we do it all mates, drill, plant, research and explore all avenues for a viable energy source that doesn't pollute. (at least not much). Also, IIRC, ballots were later found in flie cabinets, behind the drawers, in Broward county. I said it 4 years ago, I thought it 8 years ago...there will never be another "just an election" again in this country. They will all be like this from now on. Courts and chads and finding of votes. Not to mention tossing of overseas military votes. The election of Bill Clinton may have been the last really fairly-counted election in the U.S. Maybe even the election of G.H.W.B.

Practice makes perfect. They're perfecting fraud. They've been practicing it for nigh on 12 years, this current system/technique, anyway.

I wish we would emulate Mexico on this. FINGERPRINTS. PHOTO ID. No fingers? Wouldn't want to disenfranchise the fingerless. RETINAL SCAN FOR YOU. There are many usable biometric data.

Democrat fraudsters: GO DON A TOE TAG.

I'm not sure why schools are closed today, they already have too many holidays...I think the kids should be in school today and learn about the military. Have soldiers, sailors and Airmen come in and tell the kids about the jobs they do and why its important for America that they have support at home.

When I look at a man, I'm sizing him up for how to handle him in a fight. Things like his height, reach, how he carries himself, etc. Is he carryiing a knife or a gun? Based on my experience what I would consider "attractive" to females doesn't work with actual females. I've had friends who haven't had date for years that I'd have thought would have had to fight the girls off with a stick. And I've known guys that I'd evaluate as ugly as sin that got hit on by girls in the line at a fast food joint.

Yeah, I've heard that argument....and it makes economic sense, but it's an unneeded burden on the economy. I suspect we'll eventually all be driving electric cars powered by electricity generated with nuclear power....cars much more powerful than the current batch.

I agree 100 percent. This can be done without killing ourselves economically.

Today we thank, honor and remember our Veterans.

How does one thank all those who have secured our Liberty, maintained our security, and assured our peace and prosperity?

Words fail to convey the depths of my gratitude to all those who put on the uniform of this great country. I am left with a simple, humble, heartfelt;

It's been said that if fraud is going on, it's already been committed. Norm has a sharp staff working on this, so new tampering is unlikely. If someone was adding votes for crazy Al Franken, they have already done it and put them in the materials being sent to St Paul (or whereever the recount is occuring).

To my Father who served 1942 to 1946. 29th Div. Artillery Batt. .

On the morning of June 6th, 1944 a scared and seasick 21 year old Italian immigrant boarded a troop transport to take a piece of beach codenamed Omaha. En route to objective all the artillery was lost in channel, and upon landing the men left were told by the commanding officer “Well men, you are ALL infantry now”. My father grabbed a weapon and proceeded to fight his way inland.

My father never really spoke of that day ..maybe once..he told me how the sea was not just red, but a deep dark red from the blood of 1000s. He saw 20 of his friends die that morning.

I remember watching the 40th anniversary of the invasion and telling my fater I would like to go there with him some day. His response was simple but spoke volumes, he said “I don’t EVER want to go back to that f*&cking beach”.

Once, when I asked him why he did it ,he said “So you don’t have to”.

I can not imagine what he went though on that day, or the pain he endured though his lifetime when the visions of that beach would return to haunt him. But I do know one thing …he did it for me.

Thank you all for your service.

Thanks Dad.

Somehow, some way, we MUST come up with election security.
This *finding votes* stuff has to STOP!
Either our votes count, or this is a total waste of time.
I won't get Gore-ish and say the election was stolen, but particularly in the house/senate races, we have MAJOR problems that must be addressed in the next to years.

Those one party elections that they used to stage (as a ritual of legitimization) in the former Soviet Union were more honest.

Just in case some do not understand what our troops do nowadays, here is a quote from a recent event

"November 10, 2008: Last July 13th, the Taliban managed to carry out a surprise attack on a new base being built in the Afghan town of Wanat. A force of 72 U.S. and Afghan troops suffered 39 casualties (nine U.S. dead, and 26 American and four Afghan wounded). The 200 Taliban suffered about a hundred casualties (up to fifty dead, but it was difficult to get an exact count because smart bombs were used, which tend to blow bodies apart, and the Taliban will try to drag their dead away, to prevent identification.)

The U.S. Army investigated the battle, but did not answer the question of why it took so long (95 minutes) for MEDEVAC (medical evacuation) helicopters to arrive. It also took nearly two hour (108 minutes) for the first reinforcements to show up. Before then, there was artillery support (over 90 shells), smart bombs, Hellfire missiles (from a Predator UAV) and a helicopter gunship. The UAVs and AH-64s arrived within 30 minutes. There are still questions about U.S. intelligence work, and how the Taliban were able to assemble that large a force, so close to U.S. troops, without being detected."

re: #346 Bos2112

Thanks Dad.

I thank your father as well as my own for all that they did for this great country and thank you for sharing that.

Many years ago, my late husband, Walt, was going through some of his old photographs that he took during WWII. He served as a member of the Army Air Corps in the South Pacific. Walt returned after five years and lived until 1974. The day he was looking at the photographs he came across one of a fellow serviceman whom he met in the Solomon Islands. He and Bill hit it off and Bill hailed from the city right next to ours. Bill’s last name was quite unique, so my husband picked up the phone book and looked up the last name. He was wondering whatever became of Bill, because he had lost track of him.

Walt found the name and called the number. He introduced himself and told why he was calling. He got Bill’s father on the phone. I could only hear one side of the conversation, but Walt just kept saying, “I’m so sorry”. Apparently, Bill never returned; he was killed in action. Walt felt terrible about calling, but Bill’s father reassured him that it made him feel so good that after so many years, Walt remembered his son and still cared enough to make the call and say so.

So that’s my Veteran’s Day story that I remember each year. Thanks for listening to Grandma, and never forget what these men and women have done, and continue to do, for the rest of us.

Huh, and how much electricity is wasted in Las Vegas and Reno? I say shut down the casinos!

But this is an example of how powerful the Presidency is. Especially with a same-party congress. It's not the short-term day-to-day workings of the country. It's the big picture long-term things. It's who gets in federal judge positions. It's things like the above. Obama-Reid-Pelosi can kill the nuclear power industry by using stealth methods.

Not really a good idea. Vitrification is the best option, contains the material on leeching or escapes from containment. Storage at Yucca Mountain avoids water table issues and is as geologically stable as an area comes.

If only they could feel the millions of grateful minds and hearts thinking about them throughout time as they realize what they are experiencing. I have told my sons in many ways to think about the many who are being helped by what they do, from those of us here at home to the children of Iraq who are not dying at the hand of Saddam's regime because of what they do. I tell them that if they buy it in the field that we here will not be crushed by the knowledge, that we will be genuinely proud, that the life they lived, however short, has more meaning and value than most who have ever lived, and that we will all be joining them at one point or another, and we are not afraid.

IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

High Flight

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long delirious, burning blue,
I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew -
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untresspassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God.

A heart felt thank you and may G*d bless all of our veterans; past, present, and future.

From Concord bridge to New Orleans to Chipultepec to Gettysburg to San Juan Hill to Belleau Wood to the Coral Sea to Bastogne to Berlin to the Chosin Reservoir to Da Nang to Greneda to Kuwait to Sarajevo to Tora Bora to Fallujah to wherever the cause of Liberty may call you in the future you have never failed us- and you never will.

THANK YOU!

THANK YOU VETERAN'S! LAND OF THE FREE BECAUSE OF THE BRAVE!

Btw...anysoldier.com is a great way to connect with some of the soldiers abroad. They love to receive things like beef jerky, baby wipes, good smelling body wash, CARDS AND LETTERS of appreciation and news back home, and all kinds of other things they ask for specifically to remind them of home. I'm getting a couple of packages together as we speak.

God Bless the USA and it's Veteran's and those actively serving. We love you!

The French do that. Off Tahiti. There were riots in Tahiti over it a few years back.

Can you imagine if the US were caught dumping a decommissioned reactor in the ocean?

Some of the missing ballots were "found" in an election officials car in Mpls (75% Democratic town) 96 hours after the election.

Somebody posted on a thread the other day: isn't it funny that the only votes that are "found" in these recounts are for democrat candidates?

Odd that...

I just came back from the Remembrance Day ceremony at my employer. It was very touching to see so many people there, including several small children with their home made poppies, so darling.

The words "Lest we forget..." are not in vain, for we have not forgotten.

The torch of freedom is still held high.

One last post.

Operation Ward 57 helps the wounded from Iraq in Afghanistan recovering with amputations.

Ward 57 is in an older building and tends to be a bit cold.

You can buy a blanket for service member in Ward 57.

Scroll down, second item is 50 x 60 Fleece Blanket for *a Patient*

Buy several!

Is it really that case that our wounded vets need private donations to provide them with good blankets?! If so, that's truly shameful.

429 Dave the.....  Tue, Nov 11, 2008 8:22:58am

It's interesting how things change. When I was a little boy (mid-late 70's), we had a WW 1 vet living across the street. He'd be out in his yard, swinging his golf club around.

WW2 & Korean vets were those store owners, famers and just ordinary guys.

Vietnam vets tended to have the longer hair and were just getting started in their careers.

Now, the WW1 vets are pretty much gone, WW2 are long retired. And our Vietnam vets are approaching retirement age.

Unreconstructed Rebel - breeder reactors should be investigated again.

Dave the - Dems/Progressives/Communists are very good at stealth methods of killing things. Not only is nuclear power in their sightss, but do some research on how California is trying to ban legally owned weapons by outlawing ammo that contains lead from condor areas. Or making non-coded ammo illegal.

Deep sea burial is a bad idea because it just may leak. So far with USS Thresher, the US Navy has been lucky they designed her reactor vessel so well. But its only been 50 years. Yucca Mountain is for stuff that will remain dangerous for thousands of years - hence the need for geologic stability and far from a water table. Another spectre that just may haunt Europe is the post WWII dumping of German chemical weapons into the sea by the UK.

The Dead

by Rupert Brooke

BLOW out, you bugles, over the rich Dead!
There’s none of these so lonely and poor of old,
But, dying, has made us rarer gifts than gold.
These laid the world away; poured out the red
Sweet wine of youth; gave up the years to be
Of work and joy, and that unhoped serene,
That men call age; and those who would have been,
Their sons, they gave, their immortality.

Blow, bugles, blow! They brought us, for our dearth,
Holiness, lacked so long, and Love, and Pain.
Honour has come back, as a king, to earth,
And paid his subjects with a royal wage;
And Nobleness walks in our ways again;
And we have come into our heritage.

I don't get the whole Fabio thing. Give me a good Marine buzz cut anyday. Okay, not for me, but for me to see. On other people. Men, to be exact. But you all understood that. I'll shut up now.

No need to worry Silhouette, there are plenty that would be happy to be eye candy for you. I, however, spent the majority of my early life being told to cut my hair for some reason or other (Catholic school, Military, etc.). As a result, when free from such restrictions, I have a tendency to let it grow out. Something of an internalized rebellion leaking out I think. My glorious blond hair is currently about half way down my back, I typically wear it in a pony tail, and women profess their jealousy to me on a regular basis. When I am in my Viking garb at SCA events, I look every bit the part, especially since I grew out my beard this year.

As a kid though I always liked getting my birthday off from school and didn't give much thought to those who served. In 1971 I spent my 21st birthday in Quang Tri, Vietnam with the 3/5 Cav. To see men who would have served in their twenties and would have never thought they would live so long now look on memorials just for them. They look sad but not quite broken. They are a testament to war and the selflessness needed to secure freedom. They don't see themselves as heroes but that is just what they are.

On this Veteran's Day - consider making a donation to Soldier's Angels - Project Valour-IT

Every cent raised for Project Valour-IT goes directly to the purchase and shipment of laptops and other technology for severely wounded service members. As of November 2008, Valour-IT has distributed over 2700 laptops to severely wounded Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines across the country, and is now expanding its mission to include other technology that supports physical and psychological recovery.

458 Killer Tomato  Tue, Nov 11, 2008 9:04:35am

Many, many, many thanks to all the Vets on this board (and elsewhere - my grandfather, dad, two uncles, brother, and one nephew).

For those of you who may be interested, the oath of enlistment is:

"I, _____, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God."

The oath for commissioned officers is slightly different, as is the oath for members of the Army and Air National Guard. (you can find the history of the oaths online at http://www.history.army.mil/faq/oaths.htm )
People are frequently surprised to learn that it is not an oath to defend the country or the President or the flag, but is an oath to defend the Constitution.

One of the things I have heard from literally hundreds of other Vets is “I never ‘untook’ that oath; it’s still in effect”. (that would be the ‘defend the Constitution’ part – never heard anyone say they’re still taking orders… I’m sure as heck not)

Interestingly enough, I noticed the following on Wikipedia (should always be considered suspect – too much shenanigans goes on there), and wonder who posted it: “Note also that there is no duration defined in the Oath, once taken it is a lifetime affirmation.”

In any event, Happy Veterans day to all our Vets, and may God please continue to bless the United States of America and all who serve her.

Don't forget - thank a Vet!

You don't even see other men aesthetically? I'm about as hetero as a woman can get, but I do appreciate other women's looks.

Conversely, I'm about as homo as a man can get, but I very much appreciate feminine beauty (in women, that is!).

It's only, ahem, "Mini-Me" who doesn't respond at all to beautiful women, if you get my drift. (But Mini-Me really, really digs the rugged beauty of physically masculine men -- as do I, at the same aesthetic level that I appreciate physical femininity.)

Though I am an American citizen, my parents were both Canadian. So my deepest thanks today goes out to the valiant veterans past and present of both the US and Canadian military.

Those who have passed...
grandfather - WWI -Canadian Expeditionary Force - earned the Military Cross, was the kindest and most gentle man imaginable
father - Royal Canadian Air Force - WWII
two uncles in RCAF during WWII - one flew night bomber missions
uncle in Royal Canadian Army during WWII
father-in-law - 23 yr career NCO in U.S. Air Force - Vietnam
and
Lt. Thomas Pilkington, USN - POW/MIA - Vietnam, as I promised long long ago, you will never be forgotten.

Huge thanks to those veterans who are still with us, especially all the Lizard vets! And an extra special thanks to the men and women serving their country today, especially my nephew-in-law Nick C. who is serving with the Army in Iraq.

May God bless you all.

Tsk, that's very rude. Let me fix it:

breeder heterosexual reactors should be investigated again.

"Straight" or "str8" is also fine, but calling them "breeders" is never acceptable.

Similarly, British people should henceforth stop referring to cigarettes as "fags," and instead say, "Hey, mate, could I bum an LGBTQ person from you? No, I don't mind that they're menthol. Got a light?"

My long-departed father fought in Flanders' Fields, as an Aussie soldier after surviving the hellhole of Gallipoli.

He never spoke to me about it. His generation never did. All I really knew as a kid was that he had been wounded in action, would never have full use of his right arm, was often very ill - and he would always take his hat off if the London No 11 bus passed the Cenotaph, our main memorial "To the Glorious Dead." But I treasure his faded ANZAC papers that show where he fought and suffered, and I treasure the memory of a simple, brave man. The best man I ever met. I always feel sombre this time of year, he is much in my thoughts, the fear and horror he must have endured in those dreadful years.

May they never be forgotten. And God Speed to all who are serving "the allies" for freedom now.

(I go to New Zealand every year these days - in every town or city there is a fitting memorial to the ANZACs (and now blessed to the memory of all who have fallen since WW1) In Auckland, a fine museum on a commanding hill. In Rotorua - an entire lakeside. In Nelson, a small park of select and beautiful trees...... Proper remembrance of those who served and gave their all. And throughout Australia and New Zealand there are town parades on ANZAC Day, with the young descendants of servicemen and women marching - and learning and remembering. Sadly, we mark the 2 minutes' silence at 11 am here in Britain, but on the whole it is all far too perfunctory.)

God Bless the three frail Brit survivors of the WW1 carnage, they were on duty again today at the Cenotaph.

These words are just as meaningful today as when they were written in 1938.
The intro is often left out, but here's the whole thing.

GOD BLESS AMERICA
"While the storm clouds gather far across the sea,
Let us swear allegiance to a land that's free,
Let us all be grateful for a land so fair,
As we raise our voices in a solemn prayer. "

God Bless America,
Land that I love.
Stand beside her, and guide her
Thru the night with a light from above.
From the mountains, to the prairies,
To the oceans, white with foam
God bless America, My home sweet home.

A thoughtful and reflective Rememberance /Veterans Day to all.

For my (much missed) grandfather who served in the British military police in Palestine and Eritrea. Happy Armistice Day.

Thanks to the "eleventh-hour soldiers" from America.

Kaltari

We should remember that in WW1 Canada suffered proportionately more losses than any of the allies.

Very true. My grandfather would never talk about what sort of hell he went through, but his regiment saw action at both Vimy and later Amiens. He earned the Military Cross, but you would never would have guessed from looking at him that he was a war hero. He was a quiet bookish, banker type with a kind heart and a big soft spot for his loving granddaughter.

Again, my thanks to him and to all our veterans past and present for their service and dedication to duty.

It's really sad that the front page of the NY Times does not mention anything to honor our veterans on Veterans Day [Link: www.nytimes.com...]
The Los Angeles Times front page has a very small article on the bottom right about a WWII pilot makes a final journey home.
[Link: www.latimes.com...]
Its really bothers me that the MSM wishes to down play the sacrifices of our veterans on Veterans Day.

As a veteran myself, I'm truly grateful and proud for our past, present men and women who served in our Armed Forces.

Hi John, excellent post. Everyone hears all about Gallipoli here in New Zealand, what everyone forgets is that the ANZACs went from there to fight along the Western Front, and saw some of the heaviest work of any Allied division -- Third Ypres, Passchendale, etc.

You can still go to parts of France today, and in little towns along the old Western Front find Le Kangarou cafes, announce you're an Aussie and old ladies will hug you and cry "Merci!" Would that French with more recent memories still feel the same way about America, but I digress.

John, you'll want to get a new book, The Western Front Diaries by Jonathan King, [Link: catalogue.nla.gov.au...] We saw a program here in New Zealand based on it last night, excellent stuff. One thing I learned is that Diggers who were wounded in France would tell the folks back home they were wounded at Gallipoli, since that's all anybody in Australia knew or cared about -- it shocked me how few Australasians even know about the ANZACs in Europe, although as the show said, five times as many served and five times as many died there as at Gallipoli.

My thanks to all of the men and women who serve, have served, or who are preparing to serve in our armed forces. And to the families of those who serve, my thanks as well and I wish you all of the comforts in the world.

May the God whom you pray to bless and keep you all.

This peacekeeper veteran salutes those in uniform, in particular(!) who gave the highest sacrifice, and those who risked all in combat--"an infinite price for perfect value".

Non sum dignis. God bless and keep you. RK.

Ditto my Uncle Tom (1912-1982). A skinny, nebbishy, uxorious little guy with a thin moustache who looked like Mr. Fishcake of 1954. Was a union negotiator in Detroit.

You'd never guess he piloted LSTs in landings at North Africa, Sicily, Salerno, Anzio, Normandy, Southern France, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Married his wife on New Years' Eve 1940, enlisted three days later in the Navy, didn't see his wife again 'til 1946.

Once his ship was sunk beneath him, at Normandy (German shellfire, after placing his load and pulling back to sea), losing all hands but himself and one other.

Didn't learn any of this until his funeral.

Truly. Non sum dignis. I am not worthy.

To us here in the UK, this is Remembrance Day, when we remember all those who have laid down their lives for their country.

Whether the cause was glorious, unworthy or disgraceful, whether their lives were laid down as a necessary sacrifice, or wasted by a commander unworthy of his command, whatever the circumstances, any man who has taken up arms for his family, community and nation and laid down his life for that cause has done something worthy of our remembrance.

The customary recitation is of a verse from Lawrence Binyan's "For the Fallen":

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

, but if I'm quoting a WWI poem, it's going to be Wilfred Owen:

Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs
And towards our distant rest began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots
But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots
Of tired, outstripped Five-Nines that dropped behind.

Gas! Gas! Quick, boys! – An ecstasy of fumbling,
Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time;
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling,
And flound'ring like a man in fire or lime...
Dim, through the misty panes and thick green light,
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.
In all my dreams, before my helpless sight,
He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.

If in some smothering dreams you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin;
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie; Dulce et Decorum est
Pro patria mori.

I'm going to celebrate it in a way specifically designed to make liberals puke their guts out.

I'm going to have my 5 year old daughter make her Marine big brother a card in crayon showing all the family saluting him and saying "Happy Veterans Day from your family who loves you and is proud of you. This card good for your movie of choice and dinner out with us tomorrow night."

Sicky sweet, patriotic, flags drawn by 5 year olds, it's got everything to make a liberal want to choke on his copy of the Communist Manifesto.

Heh heh heh.

501 docremulac  Tue, Nov 11, 2008 1:27:09pm

And thanks to all you wonderful vets out there who made Little Green Footballs and all other free media possible.

Really.

I have a relative that was one of the very last to die in World War I. He was shot four days AFTER the Armistice was signed, by a German unit that apparently did not get the word, or felt like getting the last shot in. He died three days later in a French hospital. He is buried in Colorado. He was my grandfather's first cousin, so that would make him my third cousin, or first cousin twice removed, I think.

Thanks to all that have served and are currently serving. Had a couple of people that know I'm retired military thank me today. I feel strange when people do that, because to me, I was just doing my job.

Hey, there! So you know pBMb? My heartfelt condolences.......

I'm the tech that keeps a bunch of test engineers in line, and from breaking my hardware.

re: #304 pre-Boomer Marine brat

Hey, how you doing this morning?

Thank you for your condolences! As you know pBMb takes every opportunity to *WHACK* when he can. Perhaps, together, we can keep pBMb in line! ;-)
