I know you've made numerous improvements here, and, iirc, you did indicate some sort of tech problem with adding a gif or whatever back on Memorial Day last year, but was just curious.

I have been avoiding Google for some time owing to their apparently anti-American, anti-military slant. They seem to be the very best search engine.

What puzzled me is that "Veterans' Day" is what the day is called in the United States (at least). I seem to recall, that, at one time, the day was celebrated as Armistice Day by most of the Western world.

So why, in years past, did Google not recognize Armistice Day?

That's what I am trying to say above. If you use a toolbar Google plug in, your search item is transmitted directly to Googles search engine and you will see the first page of found items.

On that page, the Google logo is ALWAYS the standard Google logo. All the time, never changes.

If you go to their HOME PAGE, [Link: www.google.com...] , then you will see the modified logo for today.

Google can also tell what country you are in by your IP address. It is possible that they are displaying different logo depending on the origin of you dynamic or static IP address.

Yeah I happened to catch a couple minutes of that on Soapnet this morning. I was very impressed and I thought he did as good a job as most actors new to the show and a lot better than some I've seen. (Kelly Ripa was horrible in the beginning of her stint there.) It seemed to be handled well. AMC has always been cutting edge about the stories they tell.

Remembrance Day remains in many parts of the country remains a big thing. It just seems as if it is the same old Google in Canada and Britain. That does add credence to the speculation as to why they've suddenly found patriotism in the US.

Regardless, I still avoid using their products because of their past insults and omissions.

And, it would depend on where you actual service provider's server is located. If you have a server in Canada, your IP address that are issued to you may be registered in Canada, and the Google site probably re-directs you to Google Canada.

Unless Google has some script that is randomly selecting the regular logo or the holiday logo, there is NO WAY that you can go to Google.com and get a different logo.

Clear your cache. You browser will use what's in your cache.

I have been avoiding Google for some time owing to their apparently anti-American, anti-military slant. They seem to be the very best search engine.

What puzzled me is that "Veterans' Day" is what the day is called in the United States (at least). I seem to recall, that, at one time, the day was celebrated as Armistice Day by most of the Western world.

So why, in years past, did Google not recognize Armistice Day?

Not so at all. Remembrance Day is indeed observed here in Canada, & throughout the Commonwealth. I just came from the ceremony at my employer and was pleased to see it so well attended.

BTW, the 4th of July is the US National holiday, up here, Canada Day is the 1st of July. Different country, different day.

Who is your service provider? Where are you located? I can do a whois search and find out where your server is located. If it is out of the US, that may explain why Google sees you as a non-US IP.

Okay, I found the answer -- the female hat on the "o" is definitely USN because it has a black background patch behind the gold insignia, whereas USMC hats have the gold insignia directly on the white background, as on the "e."

“A Soldier Known But to God” Dane Mossgrove

01 “A Soldier Known But to God”

In 1921, an American Soldier-his name “known but to God” was buried on a Virginia hillside overlooking the Potomac River and the city of Washington. The Arlington National Cemetery burial site of this unknown World War I soldier became the personification of dignity and reverence for America’s veterans. This memorial gesture took place on November 11, giving recognition to the ending of World War I hostilities at 11AM, November 11, 1918 (the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11month). The day became known as “Armistice Day.”

Armistice Day officially received its name in America in 1926 through a Congressional resolution. It became a national holiday 12 years later by similar Congressional action.

If the idealistic hope had been realized that World War I was “The War to end all wars,” November 11 might still be called Armistice Day. But shortly after the holiday was proclaimed, World War II broke out in Europe and shattered the dream.

An answer to the dilemma of how to pay tribute to those who had served in the latest great war came in a proposal made by Representative Edwin K. Rees of Kansas: Change Armistice Day to Veterans Day, and make this an occasion to honor those who have served America in all wars.
President Eisenhower, in 1954, signed the bill proclaiming November 11 as Veterans Day, and he called for Americans everywhere to rededicate themselves to the cause of peace.

I had a kiddie party for my daughter's 3rd birthday on Sunday, and most of my friends being Democrats, I was quite disturbed to see how emotional they still were 5 days after the election. Each time another mom or set of parents arrived with their kid all of the other parents would rush over for the big self-congratulatory group hug. Many of the women had tears of joy in their eyes as they greeted each other, while the men patted each other on the back.

I haven't seen these people so happy in many years. All of them were talking about how they can finally travel outside of the country again without being mortified.

Obama voters really do feel like they just saved America.

I spent most of the party playing with the kids. My friends are more insufferable now then when they had BDS.

During the Battle of Britain, many Americans crossed the border into Canada to enlist with the Royal Canadian Air Force ... they knowingly broke the law in order to fight Hitler’s Germany.
John Gillespie Magee, Jr., born in Shanghai, China, in 1922. When Magee was just 18 years old, he entered flight training and was sent to England, on 30 June 1941. He flew the Spitfire being promoted to the rank of Pilot Officer. German bombers were crossing the English Channel regularly to attack Britain’s cities and factories.
On September 3, 1941, Magee flew a Spitfire V test flight which inspired him to write his poem. That same day he wrote a letter to his parents, which included this now famous poem. Three months later, on December 11, 1941 (three days after the US entered the war and four days after Pearl Harbor), John Gillespie Magee, Jr., was killed. He was just 19 years old.

Yes, I am looking at the page source for the google.com home page. They have a folder under INTL/en_all/images/logo.gif.

They are reading your IP address and if it is out of the US, they are directing the page to load the logo residing in the INTL/en_all/images/ folder (en_all refers to English, all)

The latest MSM leak about our covert ops has me scratching my head. Basically, the news is that the US has (gasp) sent special forces on tactical kill missions in nations such as Pockey-stan. Just the sort of strategy that the ONE advocated during the campaign (as did McCain, except McCain said shut your cake hole and do it, don't blab about it).

So why would the MSM spill this particular pot of beans? Surely they wouldn't want to undermine the ONE's policy and they don't have to worry about helping him win the election any more? I suppose that there's some satisfaction for them in continuing to beat the dead WH horse on his way out the door. Or is this simply a force of habit for them?

In 2004 I was staying at Caesar's Palace in Vegas when she was performing there. There wasn't a square inch of that place that wasn't saturated with her likeness or music. They even piped her music into the men's rooms.

We should be insuring that Obama has access to all the information at the Bush Administration's disposal, and essentially watch and learn until Jan 20.

Bush should have learned by now that the media will leak these details and programs - anything to harm this administration, consequences be damned.

This is the second remembrance day since my son, Capt. Matt Dawe, was killed in Afghanistan on July 4, 2007.

It is high time I thank the many people who offered condolences and who spoke favourably of Matt and, indeed, the Dawe family in general.

The hundreds, if not thousands, of cards and even more e-mails we received remind us of the many people we have known over the years and it is humbling to know they made the effort to reach out to us.

Even more humbling is receiving many messages from people we have never met and who wrote from countries all around the globe.

While our hearts literally ache with the loss of one of ours, we can take a large degree of solace and comfort from the show of support from these notes, especially the people of Kingston and Canada. It is high time I make the painful effort to express our thanks for all the thoughtfulness directed our way.

Our ordeal started with the news that Matt had been killed in action by an enemy Improvised Explosive Device (IED) along with five other Canadian soldiers and an Afghan interpreter.

To be fair to the UK, we have 2 days we honour. The first was last Sunday - Remembrance Sunday - when the Queen and the whole Royal Family turn out along with representatives of Government, living former Prime Ministers, representatives of major religions (including Muslims) and High Commissioners of Commonwealth countries. There is a solemn service of National Remembrance at the Cenotaph in London, followed by a march past by about 8000 veterans, some of them now very frail. The oldest veteran (110) and one of 3 survivors of WWI laid a wreath at Yeovil. This was repeated across the country at local War Memorials. The previous evening the Queen attended a Festival of Remembrance which honours our servicemen. Both the major national events were on television.

This is the National day of Remembrance. The 2 minutes silence was kept at the Cenotaph and most people would keep the 2 minute silence in their homes as well.

Today is the 11th day of the 11th month and it is a normal working day. I was in the local town shopping and the 2 minute silence was kept in that store and most (probably all) other stores. At my grandson's school they had an assembly in the morning which focused on Remembrance Day. He had an exam mid-morning and the exam was called to a halt at 11.00. They all stood up for the 2 minutes silence and then continued with the exam.

Do not rely on the Daily Star as an indicator of UK opinion. In my opinion, it does not rate the title "newspaper" other than with "scare quotes". The main interest in the paper is the daily nipple count (I understand, typically about 5). Would you want the National Enquirer to be thought to represent the deeper feelings of the USA? The Daily Mail (right wing and a newspaper, but not on the level of the broadsheets) had a Flanders poppy on the masthead which is nationally the symbol of Remembrance.

I note that GOOGLE UK does not have anything different on its plain heading for today. My normal home page is YAHOO and on Sunday and today (I did not check Monday) they have an animation of a Flanders poppy growing and flowering. Tasteful and appropriate.

I'm glad GOOGLE US have responded. A pity it did not extend to the UK.

I haven't panicked, but I think we should really examine what Obama has said on the issues. While he has been deliberately vague on most things, a pattern emerges if you look at the whole picture. He is a narcissist (psychologically), possibly even a sociopath (lack of effect, self-aggrandizement). He encourages his followers to view him as some kind of pseudo divinity. He associates with racists and anti-American terrorists.


A lot of things would have to change for the Obama Youth to drag you or I off to the Gulag, but Obama is preaching change. He never really says what we are changing them to. So far he has floated to build a massive Federal infrastructure to be fueled by coerced labor from kids and young adults. He specifically said that he wanted it to rival the military in its size and scope.

And he says he'll bankrupt the coal industry.

I think that it is perfectly reasonable to believe that he will try to do everything (or nearly everything) he has promised to do. He will have a receptive House and Senate, at least for the next two years. I think we'll know by June if he was just spouting words for public consumption or if he intends to govern as he has pledged.

If he tries to do everything he has said he'll do, he will be the worst President in American history. We've seen in his campaign how he will treat people that don't toe the Party Line. This is unlikely to change when he gets more power. It is said that Power corrupts, but I think that there is more to it than that. Power attracts the corruptible. The potential was there long before Power was attained.

And Obama appears to have the potential to be very corrupt. The seed that was nurtured by William Ayers and the Chicago Machine has been planted in fertile soil. His actions to date are not reassuring.

There's always the potential that he could turn on his handlers, but I wouldn't want to bet the farm on it.

Yeah, I didn' tlike McCain, but I voted for him. I never bought into the "send them a lesson" crowds bullshit. We're the ones who are going to get schooled.

I think it's because google.ca is still run from the headquarters in the US and they have no idea about our history or traditions. Heck, Google barely knows anything about US history or traditions.

Obama appears out of his depth on all this, but the gushingly friendly media have given him a pass on every groundless claim or gaffe. It's time for journalists to start asking him tough questions - to press him when he doesn't give serious answers. Isn't that their job?

Those who knew Obama in his university days claim that he couldn't be persuaded to study history. It shows. And his lifelong lack of interest in the military is self-evident.

The response that "he has knowledgeable advisers" isn't enough. Obama's military and counterterror "experts" compose a unique collection of the dismissed, the discredited and the dysfunctional. Most appear to be out to settle personal grudges rather than to advance our nation's security.

Did I not say that it was blatant? Do I not express enough skepticism for you?

Will the decision makers at Google find accidental enlightenment? Who knows? But they've been yelled at for years for not putting a graphic up for Veterans Day and Memorial Day. So am I going to yell at them again when they finally do it? Regardless of their motives?

Frankly most people looking at Google today don't even know that the company has been dissing American troops for years. What they're seeing is a tribute. I'd like to keep that tribute in the rotation. Acting like an ass about it isn't the way to do that.

Pop Reject served in the USN in the Pacific during WWII; he always told me about how much respect he had for the coxwains, many of them Coast Guardsmen, who drove landing craft full of Marines to invasion beaches while standing up in the back of the boat like a huge target.

God Bless Pop! From one Coastie to another. The only Coast Guardsmen to be awarded the Medal of Honor did so pulling Marines off a beach on Guadalcanal [Link: www.uscg.mil...]

Anyway, we're kinda used to being forgotten or at least overlooked at times.
But it does warm this old Chief's heart to see more and more people notice.
