This is satire, no?

2 Jetpilot1101  Tue, Nov 11, 2008 10:04:58am

I learned more in this 1:56 clip then I ever learned from MSNBC and their lineup of useful idiots.

3 doppelganglander  Tue, Nov 11, 2008 10:05:08am

Pretty funny.

4 bosforus  Tue, Nov 11, 2008 10:05:32am

Well, CNN's "holograms" I believe is a more accurate description.

5 MrSilverDragon  Tue, Nov 11, 2008 10:06:14am

Holograms? More like hollow heads.

6 Jetpilot1101  Tue, Nov 11, 2008 10:06:14am

I only wish Olberman had made an appearance; maybe as the steak that was used to convince the tiger to try floating.

7 bosforus  Tue, Nov 11, 2008 10:06:18am

MSNBC is pretty entertaining as it is anyway, can you believe they're trying to pass as a reliable news source? Hilarious!

8 vxbush  Tue, Nov 11, 2008 10:06:24am

re: #4 bosforus

Well, CNN's "holograms" I believe is a more accurate description.

Actually, no. Based on what I learned, they digitally added her in. Wolf didn't actually see her, if I understand it right. She was just digitally added into the live feed.

9 Macker  Tue, Nov 11, 2008 10:06:45am

ha ha ha

10 Intrepid  Tue, Nov 11, 2008 10:06:52am

Heh. "Floating tigers in the news" - Rotating title.

11 wright1  Tue, Nov 11, 2008 10:07:14am

Very funny - have to give them their due.

12 Russkilitlover  Tue, Nov 11, 2008 10:07:37am

Oh! Holograms! I thought they said Hooligans.

13 The Pulchritudinous Patriot  Tue, Nov 11, 2008 10:08:18am

That was funny.

14 Russkilitlover  Tue, Nov 11, 2008 10:09:06am

"He said Florida!"

Now that's just funny.

15 subsailor68  Tue, Nov 11, 2008 10:09:32am

How about floating tigers wearing Olbermann and Matthews masks. Be kinda cool to watch 'em eating each other.

Oh wait, already seen that.

16 bosforus  Tue, Nov 11, 2008 10:09:33am

re: #8 vxbush

Right, hence my quotation marks for the word "holograms". :)

17 snowcrash  Tue, Nov 11, 2008 10:09:42am

Why not? Once the battleground states had a projected winner, what was left to watch? Tigers would be entertaining especially co-anchoring the election desk with Chris and Keith at MSNBC.

18 Killgore Trout  Tue, Nov 11, 2008 10:10:00am

Sigfried and Roy were ahead of their time.

19 SummerSong  Tue, Nov 11, 2008 10:10:16am

Perhaps MSNBC can get so "ahead of the curve" that they'll fall off the cliff...

Buh-bye!

20 lawhawk  Tue, Nov 11, 2008 10:10:20am

Anyone at MSNBC talk to Sigfried and Roy? I'm sure they'd have some insightful comments, especially the floating tigers. /heh

21 wright1  Tue, Nov 11, 2008 10:10:20am

Now that Olbermann has signed on for 4 more years I am going to take a wild guess that his ratings are headed for the basement since there is no more BDS to talk about. He starts criticizing his party, he will lose his looney left viewers.

22 FrogMarch  Tue, Nov 11, 2008 10:10:54am

Show me a tiger eating Olberdouche - and you've just won me over as a MSNBC viewer.

24 Sharmuta  Tue, Nov 11, 2008 10:12:18am

Funny, yes.

Diverse, no.

27 Intrepid  Tue, Nov 11, 2008 10:13:35am

As for CNN's hologram - I'd much rather watch a computer generated personality on CNN than Wolf Blitzer. He's awful. Truly awful.

That cracks me up for some reason.

I found the answer to my own question. Since many of us probably don't watch CNN here is a clip of the hologram episode.

The crappy quality of the recording serves to emphasize the editing. Watched live, particularly on a high-resolution TV, I could see how this might look more convincing. Nevertheless, it's one of the most amusing stunts I've ever seen in the business.

Still and all, the money spent on 35 cameras to make this happen would have been better spent...REPORTING/INVESTIGATING.

49 subsailor68  Tue, Nov 11, 2008 10:23:14am

Early on, my wife worked in television news, and actually had her own talk show in San Diego. She, and a good number of colleagues, resigned when the station brought in consultants - who immediately started implementing "happy talk" news.

The hologram is just another nail in the coffin.

Oh, I agree. While I didn't actually see this incident, or know of it until the illustrious Charles brought it up, it brings to mind the Chinese fauxtography of the fireworks over Beijing during the Olympics opening ceremonies. Why waste money on an elaborate hoax when you can do something much more productive for less cost?

This must never happen.

Yes, of course. Superior technology in graphics and imaging must mean they are doing a better job at their main purpose, which is to find the truth and report it fairly to The People.

Just think how much their ratings would improve if they hired some actual journalists that the public could respect and trust.

I wonder how long it will take before they realize that a good portion of the public is tired of the dog-and-pony shows. (Okay, maybe I would tune in at least once to watch levitating tigers.)

58 turn  Tue, Nov 11, 2008 10:28:47am

Come to think about it, O is really nothing more than a sophisticated hologram created by the MSM. The sophisticated part can be debated but not the holo part.

59 J.S.  Tue, Nov 11, 2008 10:29:11am

re: #45 thedopefishlives

Yeah. And the whole stunt was based on CNN's deceiving the public. Maybe that's really what CNN is all about -- deceit. Blitzer standing there, claiming he's seeing Jessica, whereas in reality, he sees nothing...(CNN was not using actual holography -- it was all a hoax.) How the MSM has descended...nothing more than fraud artists.

The CNN election night hologram is symbolic of CNN's actual investigative news reporting: not real, just the appearance of reality. All surface, no depth. Style over substance.

The hologram is just another nail in the coffin.

A new generation of consultants are bringing in "If it bleeds it leads" pioneered by WSVN-TV in Miami. It is stunningly stupid and drags the whole market down.

After WOIO-19 here in Cleveland adopted this model all the other stations tried to catch up. One of the most pathetic examples of sweeps week bottom feeding was an "investigative" report that caught some poor unemployed schlub masturbating to Internet porn at the local library.

67 midwestgak  Tue, Nov 11, 2008 10:31:14am

Mindless people who watch CNN believe what they see, pay no attention to what they hear unless it has "and Bush sucks" attached to it. Very effective mind control tactic for the shallow of mind.

While I know you're quite right, it still saddens me. Are there really so few real intellectuals out there in America who value the substance and who actually CARE about something? Have we collectively descended so low as to be mindlessly entertained by such cheap parlor tricks? I must admit, I'm not liking the answers to those questions, based largely on the voting results from a week ago.

72 bill-tb  Tue, Nov 11, 2008 10:33:52am

And the news ?

73 DistantThunder  Tue, Nov 11, 2008 10:34:39am

It's basically going to become third world TV. In Guatemala the news had the latest genocide update (the army was killing mayan peasants) and so we'd see the endless close-ups of the mutilated body, the blood on the floor, the sobbing relatives, more of the entrance wounds.

Quite brutalizing, which I think was the intention.

Reminds me of when the NBC affiliate here in Chicago brought in Jerry Springer to do nightly commentary on the 10 o'clock news. That lasted about 2 weeks and half the news team quit shortly afterward.

re: #71 thedopefishlives

While I know you're quite right, it still saddens me. Are there really so few real intellectuals out there in America who value the substance and who actually CARE about something? Have we collectively descended so low as to be mindlessly entertained by such cheap parlor tricks? I must admit, I'm not liking the answers to those questions, based largely on the voting results from a week ago.

Remember back a few years ago when a network, I'm thinking the Comedy Channel, polled young people (young adult range) about where they get their news from? Quite a large number answered, "Jon Stewart".

The dumbing down of America began years ago and we're now reaping the consequences of it. Our schools have adopted political correctness over critical thinking skills. Being entertained over being educated.

I think a great deal of it comes from too many parents allowing their children to be babysat by the boob tube or video games. "Who was voted off Survivor this week?" has replaced "Who survived the Great Depression, and how did they do it?"

When Hollywood entertainers are viewed as respected political pundits, you just know we've gone off the rails somewhere.

The people now running America think that Tigers and all threats are a video joke. Their concept of heroes also comes from television. The gruff but PC cop from Picket Fences is what they expect. A thoughtles shield for their posturing. Remember the "business man" negotiating with the terrorists in Die Hard?

Way off Topic I was wondering how we can be saved from the oncoming train wreck. Only by Divine Providence and not by human agency. Best hope we have is this scenario. The Electoral College submits it’s votes in December 15th and the votes are opened and counted in Congress on January 06th. If Obama passes away before December 15th then his pledged Electors can vote for someone else. We can speculate on whether it would be Hillary or someone else. If Obama’s prior unhealthy lifestyle were to catch up with him after the 15th but before the certification by Congress (remember that he never released his medical records) then we would have an interesting situation. In theory Joe Biden would be the elected Vice President and John McCain would be the elected President. The only sensible way to resolve the problem would be for McCain to take the oath of office and immediately resign. That would make Biden the President. If the Democratic Governor of Arizona promised to immediately reappoint McCain to the Senate the crisis would be amicably resolved.

So, he said, it might be good to look at companies that provide parts and maintenance services on existing rigs, rather than companies that build new ones.

I think that this one, with his hubris, will be very concerned about his legacy - so he will do everything he can to adjust the legacy. This goes double if he is replaced by a conservative in the White House. Just as Carter has little respect for the traditions of the office - I doubt that Obama or his closest staff will as well....as evidenced by their inability to keep a private conversation private.

Obama will have to rehabilitate Bush in order to defend his adoption of Bush’s policies. He can’t say that Bush went far beyond necessity and the constitution and then turn around and do the same thing. No, he will patiently explain that it turns out that Bush had most things right and that we need to respect the wise decisions that he made and to finish the work he started.

You would think. Obviously, this whole subject, the election, etc occupies most of our minds these days.

The only logical conclusion I can come up with, is that he really does not posses all the qualities that are sung of praises to him, and he is modeled to be what the inner circle wants him to be.

Seriously, in this day and age, being in camera and scratching your middle finger with your face, twice? Especially after the attention the first episode received?

Or the lipstick on a pig? Everyone knew what he was getting at. Even better, quoting Reagan on the campaign trail to your benefit, and then coming off with a low class swipe at his wife in one of his latest attempts at living up to the hype.

I think he really feels some righteous wind behind him. He went through 2 years campaigning, and the media gave him a pass.

I won't put all of the bad taste on him, because I am not convinced he is totally in control. People he has decided to make bedfellows with, I would put on the level of the U.N. shoe incident, but this is all that cool inside the beltway stuff.

The only one who I think might have enough sense to understand how this can hurt them is Biden. Moreover, I think this is his reasoning for making the statements he did. He is great at putting his foot in his mouth, but I think he still might know the premonition of what can hurt them in office.

Too true! At the seminar, Home Depot (and Loewes) were two he recommended looking at - for about the same reason as the trucking deal. In down times, folks may not buy new homes, but they still need to maintain and repair the ones they have.

Not to mention the foreclosure houses going on the market within the first six months of '09. Once people are hit with the cluebat of reality and discover that Obama is not going to pay their mortgages for them, "For Sale" signs will be everywhere.

It will be the homes of those who wisely shopped Home Depot and Lowes and replaced fixtures and painted walls that will sell first.

I just tried accessing google using a proxy that is based in the US, and the logo is there actually. So yes, the logo has been made for US users only, as if it's something to hide from the world.
Look what holidays google celebrated before on their international .com site

I remember many years ago being invited to a special investors meeting at the telephone company. They explained the new 1-900 numbers. You place ads in newspapers telling people they can hear jokes, or news, or something. You charge $1 a call, with an answering machine to give out the sports scores or whatever..

I left the meeting thinking it was the stupidest idea I had ever heard...

From your link:

Obama is expected to escape that level of scrutiny mostly because he declined an $84 million public grant for his campaign that automatically triggers an audit and because the sheer volume of cash he raised and spent minimizes the significance of his errors.

What the He$$? It would seem to me that the "volume" along with the suspicious sources would "trigger" an audit, not make it more unlikely.

As long as we're talking about eating weeds, those blue flowers that grow along the interstate in summer, chickory, make a so-so substitute for coffee. Early settlers would mix chickory with their coffee to make it last longer.

And some folks in Louisiana still drink coffee & chicory.

282 legalpad  Tue, Nov 11, 2008 11:30:54am

Just doing some office/home work and watching Band of Brothers for Veterans Days. I'm on Part 9,Why We Fight. They show the concentration camp scenes here. I cannot help but reflect on the hatred that fuels the left. No matter how much they deny it, the hatred and contempt they hold for those who do not conform to their political views is what defines them, not what they will allegedly do for their constituents. Add to that their toleration, even encouragement of the Muslim hatred of - everyone else, especially the Jews.

I think it was an O'Reilly-Donahue discussion where Donahue's response to O'Reilly's question about the slaughter of 2 million Vietnamese after the American withdrawal was, "I think we should all quit calling each other names." That is comparable with whatever Fonda said about what happened to the POW's after she turned their letters over. It is comparable with Chomsky's long denial of the Cambodian holocaust.

You could add more to this mindset. That malaria rates in Africa skyrocketed (55 million more dead) after DDT was inappropriate banned by a single (leftist) bureaucrat after a court made opposite conclusions. That much of the world still supports slavery and genocide, and the rest of the world tolerates them and does business with them, making no efforts to restructure their energy and economy so they won't feel like they have to.

The bottom line is this: The left doesn't care about any of this. They are so full of their own ideological garbage that they do not care who suffers and dies, or how many, as long as it is not them or theirs. They generate hate and division faster than any Nazi ever did, and just deny doing it.

The funny part is when I find myself in a group of lefties and say these same things. They are all just like deer in the headlights. They have nothing to say, and they don't care. They would never admit that their policy of destroying all check-and-balance in a power structure is what leads to this sort of thing - every time.

And in the More Glorious News from our new Overlords department:

Obama and Gun Control:
"Address Gun Violence in Cities: As president, Barack Obama would repeal the Tiahrt Amendment, which restricts the ability of local law enforcement to access important gun trace information, and give police officers across the nation the tools they need to solve gun crimes and fight the illegal arms trade. Obama and Biden also favor commonsense measures that respect the Second Amendment rights of gun owners, while keeping guns away from children and from criminals who shouldn't have them. They support closing the gun show loophole and making guns in this country childproof. They also support making the expired federal Assault Weapons Ban permanent, as such weapons belong on foreign battlefields and not on our streets."

At the blog that came from, there is also talk of the Obama Administration coming after the Right to Carry laws. Nothing will get us into a shooting Civil War quicker than going hog wild with gun control. I've said before that I expect gun control to be one of the first priorities of an Obama Administration. It sounds like Obama is going to head that way. Hopefully, the Republicans will filibuster it all. If they won't, then what's the point in voting Republican in the mid-term elections?

Becoming Democrat-lite isn't the path to political victory for the Republicans. it is the path to irrelevance.

A few months ago, in a rather loud debate with some hard core leftists, in front of about a dozen moderates and conservatives, I got a Nathan Jessup moment when the loudest of the leftists admitted that he couldn't care less about any who died as long as they weren't Americans and that his goal and desire was to remake the US because the US didn't deserve to be a superpower or global leader - it had abdicated it's right to be one.

Needless to say - when it dawned on him what he said, from the sudden silence in the room, there was no apology...just a move of the goalpost by changing the subject. My question on why, since he felt that way, he was applying for US citizenship went unanswered. I'm sure he feels better after last Tuesday.

I'll tell you where they come from. From the families of veterans. We reproduce ourselves, the ones that come home. My grandfather and his three brothers all served in WWII and made it home. It was always kind of understood that service was not asked for but expected. I enlisted in 1982, we had a terrible economy then too. But not many I served with went in for the money. E-1 in USMC, I don't think I made $100 a month. There are those who will always serve.

It's just smoke and mirrors. What they are talking about is a way to sell prohibiting the ownership of existing weapons to the masses. "We're trying to protect the children" is a convenient cover for prohibition and confiscation. Just like the "Assault Weapons ban", the NFA, proposed legislation against "sniper" rifles, etc.

None of it is about safety or controlling crime. It is all about controlling the populace. Ultimately, enslaving the populace.

Have no way of proving it, but after listening to the numbers, this election wasn't much different that 2000 or 2004. Voter fraud is the only thing that truly makes sense to me. We are still a centrist nation.

I guess common sense and logic aren't what they're cracked up to be.

Well, they are all they are cracked up to be.... they just aren't as prevalent as they used to be. Logic isn't taught anymore, nor is critical thinking.

Common sense is inherent I think. Don't know if it can be taught. But, I seem to be surrounded by a lack of common sense. ;-)> Don't know why it isn't as common as it once was.

re: #316 Athos

he couldn't care less about any who died as long as they weren't Americans and that his goal and desire was to remake the US because the US didn't deserve to be a superpower or global leader - it had abdicated it's right to be one.

Without the most moral force on the planet as a global leader, more of everybody, including Americans, will die. What does a crazy lefty, without facts or history, know about who deserves what? And who should be a global leader? Russia? France? China? It's as if the spoiled child of affluent America is pouting and throwing a fit in a virtual world where his parents provide him with everything. They will probably force a showdown. Too bad.

re: #338 bellamags

It gives me no pleasure to make it. But we have to be honest and realistic about what the next 2-4 years is going to be like. Clinton started his Presidency with a hard drive for gun control that ended only when he lost both the House and the Senate. Without the election of 1994, I think there would have been major bloodshed in the US over the issue.

Effectively, we voted a Revolution. The system works. Unfortunately, the Republicans have provided weak leadership ever since then. That's why they lost the House and Senate in 2006. The Bush Whitehouse was sufficient to shield us from these kind of attacks. But with control of the Legislative and Executive Branches the Democrats may feel that their long-term goals are not reachable without disarming the populace. This even in the face of the Heller decision.

I've been very bleak in my accessment of what I think the Obama Administration will be like. I have likened Obama to Mussolini, and been troubled over his proposed "Volunteer Corps". Things like this simply re-enforce what I have based my opinions on.

I would love to be wrong.

If there is any hope for the Repubs now, it is that we are going to have to change the party fundamentally now. Will we move to the left or return to our conservative principles? We can win in 2010 if we return to our core and we still have a center-right country. The RNC is leaderless now. There is talk of Gingrich or Michael Steele running the RNC. Gingrich was the leader in 1994. There is still hope. Don't give up yet.

Don't know, I'll ask him on the next phone call. Buck and Bob are truly great men, of real character and integrity, the best of America. We need more of 'em these days. They were both victorious, and never forgot what they learned in battle, or in life - I'll bet!

Buzz, if it was me, I'd go with the "illegal" weapon.

I'd rather be going to jail for a dead intruder than be defenseless against that intruder.

re: #343 buzzsawmonkey

That is a very difficult question. I don't believe that the people buying guns today are planning on turning them in. Just having filled out a 4473 means that there is a way to trace the weapon from the store to you. I think that it is legal to purchase long guns in a state that you don't live and transport them back to your home if it is legal for you to own them in your state. Depending on the State, you may not have to register them in your home state.

It is leagal in most States to buy firearms without having to go through a dealer. That is the so-called "Gun Show Loophole" that Democrats want to get rid of. In my State you can buy pistols that way, too. If I were making a new purchase, that is the way I'd go about doing it.

It is a problem if you live in a place like NYC, where simple possession is illegal. If you are found with it there are serious legal consequences. It would be like me owning a Class III weapon. I stay away from them because I don't want anything registered to me, but the consequences of getting caught with one outweigh the benefits of owning one.

It is best to stay legal. At the same time, I expect MASSIVE civil disobediance if Obama is able to get new gun control laws through. Gun control creating an entire class of "criminal" by virtue of it's existing. This is one reason among many that I oppose gun control.

I've gotta run right now. Talk to you more this evening or tomorrow.

re: #343 buzzsawmonkey

So, here's the question. If you live in a state and city with strict gun controls--as I do--what is the point of running out to buy a weapon before Obama starts his war on gun ownership? I buy a gun legitimately, I'm tagged and registered via permit; he tries confiscation, he knows where to get my weapon.

If I buy something in a state with looser controls and bring it back here, then I have an illegal weapon; if I use it on an intruder, I am on a one-way ticket to Riker's Island. If I merely have it and it is found, I am also in jeopardy.

So: what do we residents of strict control states/cities do? What is the purpose of holding a weapon which is tagged and numbered for confiscation if things go that way?

I think people are trying to beat the ban on sales of certain firearms rather than the possession of them. Remember Clinton's vague semi-auto ban and the ban on 10 round-plus clips.

In a city like Chicago you can't really register a firearm but it's illegal to possess an unregistered firearm. A legal purchase takes place out of the city or state limits, where the local laws of the purchaser's home city don't matter, and FOID information is recorded and must be legally kept on file by the seller for 5 or 10 years, I think. The gun is taken home and, since the state FOID database isn't shared with the city, local police enforcement is none the wiser that you've got an unregistered piece.

To really answer your question, though, I've had cop friends tell me that if it got to the point of the government rounding up guns based on gun sale records, people would claim that their guns were lost or stolen and they never reported it.

And then there's always the "Better to be tried by twelve than carried by six" mentality.

Funny video, but what CNN did IS NOT a hologram. It's a simple overlay on the TV screen. Why do people always abuse words they don't know? It's not a hologram.

My hometown grocery store had tacos and spaghetti in the "foreign food" aisle.

And I talked them into carrying eggplant just for me. So of course I felt honor-bound to buy one every week. Boy did I get sick of eggplant.

I loves me some fried eggplant....mmmm

If they would let a tiger chase Chris Matthews around I might actually watch MSNBC. I wonder if the MSM realizes how many viewers they have lost forever due to their overt bias & rude childish covergae of republicans.

I mean honestly, Sarah Palins cloths? Did any news organization ever in the history of electons run articles about how much a democrats cloths cost? EVER ? IN HISTORY ? A bunch of spoiled children, that is what they are. No more credibility than Tiger Beat Magazine in my mind.
