And Now for Some Brawling Monks

Video | Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 8:56:25 pm PST

This isn’t the first time the competing religious groups in charge of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem have broken out in violence, but it’s one of the few times it’s been filmed.

They need to read the Gospels. It seems they have been worrying more about being close to the dead rather than the seeking the Spirit.

Looks like the entire set of Black Adder episodes is up on youtube.

Don't know how long they will last there, but they are pretty high quality.

The person who posted them has the season and episode numbers in the titles as well as part 1 through 4.

Anyways, start here if you want.

This is great British comedy that launched the careers of Rowan Atkinson (who later did Mr Bean and Johny English) and Hugh Laurie (of House fame).

re: #55 Noam Sayin'

there are some great war dog sites. I had a foster dog that would have been a good sniffer dog for the police or military --so I was doing all kinds of research on it trying to figure out if they would take her and how to go about it. She had some health problems, so I wouldn't work out. But, I learned a lot!

Mostly that a lot of the dogs that end up in shelters do so because they are not really "pet quality", they need to work and don't get propery placed. The funding isn't there to sort all the dogs out and get them where they should be. So sad. When I (if ever) retire, I'd like to go around to shelters and find the dogs the police /military need and put the two together.

Good evening all y'all - I'm sorry to go OT and I'm sorry for the repost I made waaay late in the prior thread, but I just feel that I have to post it - typos and all, again:

"You know you all - I read Bush's comments and said to myself "So what?" Who among us - hell who among any President of the United States hasn't had regrets?
Did he lie to us about 9/11 - NO - I was there and I saw us get MUGGED by terrrorism less than 9 months into his Presidency. His intelligence agencies and the intelligence agencies of Great Britain, France, Italy, Spain, Egypt and Jordan all INDEPENDENTLY reached the conclussion that Hussein had WMDS. Based on that Collin Powell went to the UN and Bush went to the Congress and recieved approval for invading Iraq, NOT JUST BECAUSE of the WMDs, but to enforce the 17 or 19 blatant, outright violations of UN Sanctions again Iraq.
And, most importantly of all, we've had no more 9/11 attacks on the US since he's been President.Something for which I'll always be grateful and for which President Bush DOES deserve the credit. His kissing up to the Arab nations, espcially Saudi Arabia and the UAE was to make sure that the US got enough oil to maintain our economy and fight two wars concurrently AND TO TRY TO KEEP Saudi and UAE money from goint to Al-Queda.
Could Bush have done a better job as POTUS - sure, but he DIDN'T LIE TO US, HE KEPT US SAFE and he did it all while being the most viciously attacked President by the MSM and the "loyal" opposition that I can remember.
Don't y'all remember FISA - how the liberals and the MSM wailed and cried that we were "Wiretapping" people making overseas phone calls in order to protect Americans (FISA)? And don't y'all remember that Obama - after lying through his teeth and saying he wouldn't support that intrustion on our civil liberties, wound up voting FOR FISA?President Bush saved us from another 9/11 because HE TOOK THE FIGHT TO THE ENEMY and kept them on the run and cut down on their ability to communicate and raise or obtain money to finance their operation.
I don't think he's a loser and I for sure don't feel that I'm a loser because I supported President Bush."

I did a little digging on that memorial, and the most likely result I can find is this.

The War Dog Memorial, an exact replica of the official memorial in Guam, was donated to the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine by Dr. Maurice Acree July 17, 1998. It honors not only the war dogs, but symbolizes the special connection people share with dogs.

92 logboy  Tue, Nov 11, 2008 9:31:22pm

Found it.

Disabled Veterans Life Memorial Foundation

Throughout our nation’s history, service men and women have gone bravely into battle, risking their lives and livelihoods, sacrificing their safety to defend America. When their duty is done, many return home to life as it was. Sadly, for over 3 million veterans seriously injured in the line of duty, leaving the battlefield does not mark the end of conflict. These permanently disabled heroes often carry home life-altering disabilities – stern reminders of the price of freedom.

America’s disabled veterans have honored us with their service and selfless duty. It is now our turn to honor them.

For the first time, America will pay tribute to some of our most courageous heroes – our disabled veterans. The American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial will celebrate those men and women who may be broken in body – but never in spirit.

But since you've given me the opportunity, I read some of Charles' comments and had some difficulty divining/understanding how he feels, but I do know that LGF was instrumental in fighting the War on Terror and I sure as hell hope we will continue to be instrumental in fighting the War on Terror.

Custard pies at 10 paces.

Throw in the clint east-wood spaghetti western gunfight soundtracks and we could sell tickets.

Yeah, went shopping for a shotgun out of curiosity. You can't get a home defense weapon in southeast PA for love or money. Everybody expects the new guys to clamp down so the dealers can't keep stuff on the shelf.

"Baptist" is a very generic term nowadays. Do you mean "Southern Baptist" or "General Baptist" or "Missionary Baptist".....

There are lots of Baptist groups out there. The largest one is "Southern Baptist". But their theology isn't representative of all baptists.

Add to that The One's history in a madrassa, and the intrigue deepens. In some quarters, he's seen as a Muslim, because no doubt he did say the shahada as a child. But in other quarters, he's seen as an apostate, because he now goes to a place that calls itself a "Christian church."

141 kulhwch  Tue, Nov 11, 2008 9:51:12pm

Not exactly OT:

Somalis grow fearful of Islamists

Her 62-year-old aunt told the BBC that the teenager had in fact been raped by three armed men - and she took Asha to the police station to report it.

Several days later, after two suspects had been arrested, she was asked to return to the station with her niece.

To her surprise the girl was taken into custody too.

"I tried to speak to the police but they said they were not talking," she said.

Three days later, after Asha had been tried in an Islamist court, she was stoned to death.

"They said that the girl had chatted up these men and had confessed to adultery," she said.

But the aunt said the authorities clearly failed to notice her age, how mentally disturbed she was by her experience, or her history of mental illness.

"She was only 13 years old. I have got her card from Hagarder refugee camp which has her age on it. She might have looked a bit older, but you could tell her age by talking to her," she said.

Law and order

Other critics point to the lack of lawyers, witnesses or appeal process.

The Islamists were reported to have announced their verdict the day before the stoning from cars with loudspeakers.

But Asha's aunt was not informed of the court's decision - despite repeated visits to the police station.

"I was not even told that she was to be killed, I just heard it from people after it happened.

"I don't know what crime she committed other than being raped; and I was not even allowed to see her body," she said.

Al-Shabab in Kismayo has refused attempts by the BBC to discuss the stoning.

Agreed, but I think this is geared more toward Vets from OIF/OEF since most of us survive our injuries.

"During World War II, approximately 30% (almost one-third) of soldiers wounded in combat died from their wounds. In the Korean War, the number dropped to about 24%, and held steady at that rate through the Vietnam and Persian Gulf Wars. In the current action in Iraq, the number has dropped dramatically to just under 14%, or one in seven."

In an ancient monastery in a faraway place, a new monk arrived to join his brothers in copying books and scrolls in the monastery's scriptorium. He was assigned as a rubricator on copies of books that had already been copied by hand. One day he, asked Father Florian (the Armarius of the Scriptorium), "Does not the copying by hand of other copies allow for chances of error? How do we know we are not copying the mistakes of someone else? Are they ever checked against the original?"

Fr. Florian is set back a bit by the obvious logical observation of this youthful monk. "A very good point, my son. I will take one of the latest books down to the vault and compare it against the original."

Fr. Florian went down to the secured vault and began his verification. After a day had passed, the monks began to worry and went down looking for the old priest. They were sure something must have happened. As they approached the vault, they heard sobbing and crying. When they opened the door, they found Fr. Florian sobbing over the new copy and the original ancient book, both of which opened before him on the table. It was obvious to all that the poor man had been crying his old heart out for a long time.

"What is the problem, Reverend Father?" asked one of the monks. "Oh, my Lord," sobbed the priest, "the word is 'celebrate'.

A man is driving down the road and breaks down near a monastery. He goes to the monastery, knocks on the door, and says, "My car broke down. Do you think I could stay the night?"

The monks graciously accept him, feed him dinner, and even fix his car. As the man tries to fall asleep, he hears a strange sound. The next morning, he asks the monks what the sound was but they say, "We can't tell you. You're not a monk."

The man is disappointed but thanks them anyway and goes about his merry way.

Some years later the same man breaks down in front of the same monastery. The monks again accept him, feed him, and even fix his car. That night, he hears the same strange noise that he had heard years earlier.

The next morning he asks what it is but the monks reply, "We can't tell you. You're not a monk."

The man says, "All right, all right. I'm dying to know. If the only way I can find out what that sound was is to become a monk, then how do I become a monk?"

The monks reply, "You must travel the earth and tell us how many blades of grass there are and the exact number of sand pebbles. When you find these numbers, you will become a monk."

The man sets about his task. Some forty-five years later, he returns and knocks on the door of the monastery. He says, "I have traveled the earth and have found what you have asked for. There are 256,897,103,145,236,284,232 blades of grass and 231,281,219,999,129,382,756,124,512,999 sand pebbles on the earth."

The monks reply, "Congratulations. You are now a monk. We shall now show you the way to the sound."

The monks lead the man to a wooden door, where the head monk says, "The sound is right behind that door."

The man turns the knob, and behind that door he is amazed to find the source of that strange sound.

But we can't tell you what it is because you're not a monk.

Hell if we'd put half of McCain's money we'd a raised, iirc, something like $42 million dollars; if we'd put half of Obamas money we'd a raised about $340 million dollars.
So we would have had roughly $382 million to help disabled American Vets. That would have gone a long way to helping these men and women out.
And we wouldn't have had Obama winning the election as a bonus!

They should pass a law, mandating 3% of all campaign money earned is given to nonprofits (1.5% dems use, 1.5% reps use). At least that way, we all win the election.

I received this email today:

Dear Fellow Business Owners,

As a business owner who employs 30 people, I have resigned myself to the fact that Barack Obama is our next president, and that my Taxes and Fees will go up in a BIG way.

To compensate for these increases, I figure that the customer will have to see an increase in my fees to them of about 8%. I will also have to lay off six of my employees. This really bothered me as I believe we are family here and didn't know how to choose who will have to go.

So, this is what I did: I strolled thru the parking lot and found eight Obama bumper stickers on my employees cars. I have decided these folks will be the first to be laid off.

I can't think of more fair way to approach this problem. If you have a better idea, let me know. I am sending this letter to all business owners that I know.

Can you say Obacklash?

A man in the middle ages became fed up with humanity and decided to spend the rest of his life in a monastery. The abbot warned him that he would have to take a vow of silence and live the rest of his life as a scribe, to which the man replied, "No Problem. I'm sick of talking."

Ten years went by, and the abbot called for the man. He told him that he was a model monk and perfect scribe, and that they were very happy to have him. As per their tradition, he was allowed to say two words. Asked if he had anything to say, the man nodded and said: "Food cold."

The abbot sent him on his way. Ten years later, he was brought before the abbot again and once again told how pleased they were with his performance, and that he was again allowed two more words if he so chose. The man said: "Bed hard," and was sent back to work.

Another ten years went by and again the abbot sent for the man, telling him that he was the best monk they had ever had, and that he was allowed another two words. The man nodded and said: "I quit."

To this, the abbot replied in a disgusted tone: "Doesn't surprise me. You've done nothing but complain since you got here."

More on the Disabled Veterans Memorial:

Adding to the beauty of our nation’s capital, the American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial will soon become one of our country’s treasured landmarks, bringing together visitors of all ages and backgrounds—a fitting tribute to the brave men and women who stand watch over America.

Commanding an impressive two-acre site between Washington Avenue SW (Canal Street), C Street SW and Second Street SW, the memorial will be within full view of the United States Capitol, adjacent to the National Mall, and across from Independence Avenue and the United States Botanic Garden.

The Memorial was sponsored by Senator John McCain (AZ), former Senator Max Cleland (GA), and Representatives Sam Jonson (TX) and John Murtha (PA)

When a good Veteran leaves the 'job' and retires to a better life, many are jealous, some are pleased and others, who may have already retired, wonder if he knows what he is leaving behind, because we already know.

We know, for example, that after a lifetime of camaraderie that few experience, it will remain as a longing for those past times.

We know in the Military Life there is a fellowship which lasts long after the uniforms are hung up in the back of the closet. We know even if he throws them away, they will be on him with every step and breath that remains in his life. We also know how the very bearing of the man speaks of what he was and in his heart still is.

These are the burdens of the job. You will still look at people suspiciously, still see what others do not see or choose to ignore and always will look at the rest of the Military world with a respect for
what they do; only grown in a lifetime of knowing.

Never think for one moment you are escaping from that life. You are only escaping a 'job' and merely being allowed to leave 'active' duty.

So what I wish for you is that whenever you ease into retirement, in your heart you never forget for one moment that 'Blessed are the Peacemakers for they shall be called children of God,' and you are still a member of the greatest fraternity the world has ever known.

Civilian Friends vs. Veteran Friends

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Get upset if you're too busy to talk to them for a week.
VETERAN FRIENDS: Are glad to see you after years, and will happily carry on the same conversation you were having the last time you met.

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Have never seen you cry.
VETERAN FRIENDS: Have cried with you.

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Borrow your stuff for a few days then give it back.
VETERAN FRIENDS: Keep your stuff so long they forget it's yours.

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Know a few things about you.
VETERAN FRIENDS: Could write a book with direct quotes from you.

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Will leave you behind if that's what the crowd is doing.
VETERAN FRIENDS: Will kick the crowds' ass that left you behind.

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Are for a while.
VETERAN FRIENDS: Are for a lifetime.

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Have shared a few experiences...
VETERAN FRIENDS: Have shared a lifetime of experiences no citizen could ever dream of...

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Will take your drink away when they think you've had enough.
VETERAN FRIENDS: Will look at you stumbling all over the place and say, 'You better drink the rest of that before you spill it!' Then carry you home safely and put you to bed ...

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Will talk crap to the person who talks crap about you.
VETERAN FRIENDS: Will knock the hell out of them --- for using your name in vain.

A veteran - whether active duty, retired, or national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America', for an amount of 'up to and including my life.'

From one Veteran to another, it's an honor to be in your Company.
Thank you Veteran!

re: #227 dkorta

That's good.

That's one of my two favorite monk jokes. Here's the other one:

There once was a monastery that was very strict. Following a vow of silence, no one was allowed to speak at all. But there was one exception to this rule. Every ten years, the monks were permitted to speak just two words. After spending his first ten years at the monastery, one monk went to the head monk. “It has been ten years,” said the head monk. “What are the two words you would like to speak?”

“Bed… hard…” said the monk.

“I see,” replied the head monk.

Ten years later, the monk returned to the head monk’s office. “It has been ten more years,” said the head monk. “What are the two words you would like to speak?”

“Food… stinks…” said the monk.

“I see,” replied the head monk.

Yet another ten years passed and the monk once again met with the head monk who asked, “What are your two words now, after these ten years?”

“I… quit!” said the monk.

“Well, I can see why,” replied the head monk. “All you ever do is complain.”

We all served and we are all brothers (and now sisters as well, but not in Vietnam, damnit!).

Hey JCM - I recall posting this somewhere before, maybe on the overnight or on the Veterans Day Thread, but, speaking as a former infrantryman, I have a great deal of respect for all those medics, truck drivers, cooks, mail clerks, payroll and transfrer order clerks, and ever "Rear Echelon Mother Fucker" or "REMF" as we fondly called 'em, cause without them, we'd a been eating grass, throwing stones, instead of lead, and woulda bled out from wounds - and we are very aware that, at least in my experience in Vietnam, the REMF's were mortared, rocketed and shot out during the course of their duties as well. We all served and we are all brothers (and now sisters as well, but not in Vietnam, damnit!).

Thanks.

re: #234 IslandLibertarian

The reference is Jesus response to a fight. Fairly straight forward.
Matthew 26: 52,53
Clear?

My Bible says that Mathew 26:52-56 says:

Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.

Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels?

But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be?

In that same hour said Jesus to the multitudes, Are ye come out as against a thief with swords and staves for to take me? I sat daily with you teaching in the temple, and ye laid no hold on me.

But all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled.

That's the whole paragraph of the specific quote you posted. Take the whole context into consideration when you quote scripture. It's been a down fall of many when they don't.

265 jcm  Tue, Nov 11, 2008 10:50:19pm

A rabbi, a priest, and a minister are discussing what they do with donations to their respective religious organizations. The minister says that he draws a circle on the floor, throws the money up in the air, and whatever lands in the circle, he gives to God, and whatever lands outside the circle, he keeps.

The priest uses a similar method. He draws the circle, but whatever lands outside the circle, he gives to God, and whatever lands inside, he keeps.

The rabbi has a slightly different method of dividing the money. He throws all the money up in the air. Whatever God wants, he keeps...

Yeah, this joke just doesn't do it for me. I'm possibly too removed from the Roman Catholic faith, and don't see where the word "celibacy" as opposed to "celebrant" could ever have been confused in the literature to a meaningful extent. I mean, where would "celibacy" as opposed to "celebrant" even be mentioned in the Bible? Not to be a wet blanket or anything, but these thoughts do intrude.

But the thing about the Abbot and the Monk. Now that was believable. And funny.

Sorry, have I ever said I was your "spiritual adviser"? You quoted scripture TO ME, and I quoted the context back to you. Never did I claim any kind of "adviser" role over you, dude/dudette.

I was a missionary for 20 years, so I have also studied scripture. Trained it it extensively. I lived it in foreign lands, where being a "Christian" was not acceptable. Often was ridiculed for my faith. Sometimes had to hide it because of danger.

So perhaps you should consider the whole mote/beam thing over again.

I must say the WWII guys have my utmost respect (as do all Vets). Many were gone 4 years at a time. And the fighting they endured? I feel negligible in comparison. Don't bring a sword to a spiritual fight.

Brawling in a church. Maybe it is "The End of Days".

That was the beginning, for me. I then brought the fuller context of the quote up. You ridiculed what I posted by stating you trained to be a minister. Then I told you of my experience in being a missionary.

Now others have come in and said "let it go". I'll agree with them. I'll let it go.

But honestly, I am feeling slighted more than a bit. And if you're a "trained minister", then you'll understand what I'm saying.

Just wait until BO is President. Time magazine seems to think he's Jesus.

How does one get film into a video camera?

They damn sure are not Shaolin Monks. In fact, I didn't see a good right cross (pun intended).

Reminds me of Jesus' commandment to his disciples: "Love one another."

And like these guys, they disobeyed him.

Who won? I'm beginning to wonder if there's something in the drinking water in the ME that causes severe wackiness.

re: #302 IslandLibertarian

"But to be honest, your opinion of me is none of my business"

That's serious wisdom.

Ladies and gentlemen, let us all take a moment out of our busy days to feel superior for a moment.

For the Israelis who are constantly condescended to by the Jimmy Carters of the world with the message that if we Jews would only embrace the message of Jesus's love, everything would sort itself out, it must have been secretly satisfying to have to sort THIS out between people to whom Jesus's love is the most important thing on earth.

I am not being sarcastic, not really. Life is complicated. Christians fought bloody wars for centuries. But they preach peace. Should they have stopped preaching peace? Of course not.

Moral? Listen carefully:
I AM NOT A HYPOCRITE WHEN I'M DOING SOMETHING RIGHT: I'M A HYPOCRITE WHEN I DO SOMETHING WRONG. Peace be upon all lovers of peace.

Religion of peace!

Oh, wait... wrong religion.

This would not be the first time in history that people have engaged in turf battles. It's as common as everything else that is connected to human nature.
