The last member of the Jimi Hendrix Experience is no more.
Mitch Mitchell, the drummer for the Jimi Hendrix Experience, and longtime fixture in the music business, was found dead this morning in his Portland hotel room.
Mitchell, 61, apparently died of natural causes, the Multnomah County Medical Examiner said. Mitchell was found dead at appoximately 3 a.m. in his room at the Benson Hotel in downtown Portland.

Say what you want, but he's spot on:
My rhetorical answer at the time was simple: Why should one be excluded from the Republican Party for believing and always voting for:
• Limited government power
• A balanced budget
• Personal liberty
• Strict adherence to the Constitution
All agreeable, and all necessary.
• Sound money
Nice idea, but we do not need a gold standard.
• A strong defense while avoiding all undeclared wars
A strong defense is good, but avoiding all undeclared wars is a little difficult in our times of Islamic/Jihadist terrorism.
• No nation-building and no policing the world
Again, difficult in our times. If the US does not maintain freedom of the seas, and take out idiots here and there, then the whole system collapses.

Just saw Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council on Fox News, spouting off about what the GOP needs to do.
For those of you who pooh-poohed the idea that McCain's moderate pro-choice stance was a serious problem for these people, and a major reason why he picked Sarah Palin (to appease them), here's what Perkins had to say back on August 21st:
“If he were to change the party platform,” to account for exceptions such as rape, incest or risk to the mother’s life, “I think that would be political suicide,” Tony Perkins, the president of the conservative Family Research Council, told ABC News in May. “I think he would be aborting his own campaign because that is such a critical issue to so many Republican voters and the Republican brand is already in trouble.”

They have no idea what the climate is going to be 10,000 years from now, let alone 50. Or 5. The models aren't nearly as sophisticated as they want people to believe, the data isn't complete (or corrupted in some cases), and it's possible that scientists aren't even asking the right questions about climate change, to say nothing of the effects of that great fiery orb in the sky.
Then, there's the blatant nonsense proffered by the likes of Hansen who says temps are up in October, but that's based on using September data for most of it's Russian reporting.
It's all part of the climate fudge factor.

I've never understood the whole 'gold standard' thing. If we put ourselves on the 'gold standard' and an ounce of gold is worth $800, it seems to me that any time the government wants to, it can print more money raising the price of gold to, say, $805/ounce. How is that any kind of limit on anything? And every time a bank makes a loan, money is created...again, the price of gold increases.
I'm probably just terribly confused...where's 3 Wood anyway?

I've never understood the whole 'gold standard' thing. If we put ourselves on the 'gold standard' and an ounce of gold is worth $800, it seems to me that any time the government wants to, it can print more money raising the price of gold to, say, $805/ounce. How is that any kind of limit on anything? And every time a bank makes a loan, money is created...again, the price of gold increases.
I'm probably just terribly confused...where's 3 Wood anyway?
Printing money makes it worth less.

My plan to fix the economy:
1. Hold govt spending flat for 2 years (no increases)
2. Cut long term capital gains tax to 0-10% for securities purchased after today, or purchased previously but held more than one year after today.
3. Reduce corporate income tax rate by 25-50%.
4. Reduce personal income tax rates 10-20% across the board.
And to make this work faster, the Feds need to lower the payroll withholding requirements immediately. That could start putting extra money in people's pockets within days. I've not heard anyone suggest this yet.
Isn't it economic orthodoxy to cut taxes going into a recession? Why isn't this being done now? Congress's idiotic stimulus plans aren't working...

No - they call that moral and all those who disagree as amoral.
It is also important to note that these are the same folks who throw around the term RINO when describing the very small minority (in their minds) of Republicans who do not see things their way. Yet they will have no problem with seeing all fiscal discipline lost as long as the moral purity of the party is maintained.
I am sick of it.
If we hit a depression, watch abortion rates soar. And they would soar anyways even if every kind of abortion were banned because abortions were performed long before they were legal. I am a Catholic and am pro life (though I wouldn't pass this guy's purity test), and I am damned tired of this tail wagging the whole dog.

Argh. I know it's been 30 + years, but can we all educate ourselves a bit on the impact of Roe v Wade and the most recent substantive erosion of the case; Casey v Planned Parenthood. Roe v Wade is a horrible decision--not for the morality issue, but because the SCOTUS took on the role it was never meant to have-- that of a super-legislature. it went far beyond the concept of judicial review--a role which the court created for itself and is now a legal reality. Whenever the Court engages in social engineering, it's always a bad result for the rest of us.
As you know by now, I am a social conservative. I am also a pragmatist. There are ways in which GOP contenders can get around the issue of pro-choice/ pro-life, starting with explaining to the electorate what would happen if the SCOTUS reversed Roe. The right to choose and the right to privacy would remain untouched. All that would happen is that the power to decided when the interest of the state in the life of the unborn supersedes the rights of the mother would be left to the states to decide. The federal government/Congress could not touch it because of the 10th Amendment (yes, it is still valid). The candidate would take a "Federalist" position and say he is in favor of letting a state's population determine the issue--not a court. This would do away with the whole pro-choice/life schism within the GOP.

On the 100% gold standard or silver standard a government can only produce as much money as the gold or silver held in reserve. The Fed got away from that ideal and started printing more money than the US had gold.

Oh, I know. But, look at what happens when the states themselves are left to determine these things. Thirty states oppose same sex marriages (while most if not all have civil union statutes--go figure). Abortion will still be legal in all 50 states--it's only at what point during gestation will it be prohibited is the question.

The worst thing we could do is try to go back to specie money.
When you do that, you lose the ability to conduct monetary policy, and you allow foreign governments to play with your economy by buying their gold or whatever other substance you tie your currency to.
Also, there is not enough gold in the world to cover the US money supply.

In any event, and regardless of what he may or may not have sought to put in the platform, to call McCain himself "pro-choice" is stupid. With the sole exception of the embryonic stem cell issue, where he wanted safeguards but not a total prohibition, his votes have been solidly pro-life.
BTW, the Catholic Church speaks with one voice, even if Catholics as a group of individuals do not. In the case of the evangelicals, they do not even have one voice on the ecclesiaistical level. To speak, then, of "all the evangelicals" can be misleading.

I like it! Reward productive behavior! Encourage risk taking. Allow stupidity to go unnoticed!
Unfortunately, the economic stimulous plans (not to mention our incoming POTUS) have the opposite philosophy - penalize productive behavior and subsidize stupidity.

one of the tools that a government can use to control the economy
One of the reasons we went on the Gold Standard (BTW, Article I, Section 10 of the US Constitution prohibits states from "mak[ing] any Thing but gold and silver Coin a Tender in Payment of Debts") is because the original Continental Congress attempted to [mis]control the economy by printing worthless script.
The lesson learned was to keep gov't the hell away from the money. Sadly, that lesson has been lost. Maybe a few years of Mugabe-like inflation will remind us.

Here's what George Bush (in effect Bush here is speaking to Obama), from the CNN interview with Heidi Collins broadcast on Nov. 11, 2008:
Bush: "I think a president who tries to be popular is a president who could fail the country. And I remind people popularity is fleeting. Principles are forever. And there've been times when I've been popular and times when I haven't been popular. But the job of the president is to make good, tough decisions based upon solid principles that are etched in his soul. I know there's this kind of preoccupation by some by popularity polls, but for me they're just moments, they come and go. But what doesn't change [is] what you believe and can you defend those beliefs. And I assure you, as president of the United States you better have a core set of beliefs, because a lot of people are watching you and they are trying to determine where America will stand. A lot of people inside the White House, they are trying to determine whether this person is going to be making decisions based upon core principles or whether the person is going to be all over the map trying to chase popularity."

On the 100% gold standard or silver standard a government can only produce as much money as the gold or silver held in reserve. The Fed got away from that ideal and started printing more money than the US had gold.
Which is exactly why Nixon took us off the standard internationally. If he was to have been impeached, it should have been for that.

Add to that the fact that gold is an industrial mineral and has a demand independent of people trying to store value, and you set up a currency system that constricts growth severely.
If you want stability back in the US financial system, focus on mortgages going to qualified borrowers. It is the foundation of finance - screw with the foundation and you get what we are now dealing with.

Oh, I agree that it would be better to leave it to the States. Roe v. Wade was a real abortion of a case, if you'll permit the turn of phrase. The Left hold it up as if it were Holy Writ, though. And for them, perhaps it is. Certainly the Court has expanded and expanded it to the point that abortion is the most protected "Constitutional" right we have.
As a practical matter, though, I don't think we're going to see Roe v. Wade overturned. Obama will make it a litmus test for any judge he appoints, and the Republicans will go along because that's what they do. The Republican Party doesn't have the balls to filibuster a Supreme Court Justice, and they damn sure won't be able to block one outright.
As far as I'm concerned, it's about time we accepted defeat on this issue and turned to issues we can win on.
I disagree. It's worth fighting for, especially when you have legalized infanticide called partial-birth abortion, and aborted babies which survive are left to die. It's an abomination which cannot be allowed to continue.

One problem is that every time a Republican/Catholic/whoever wants to address the issue of teens getting abortions without parental consent (unlike getting an aspirin at school) or tries to point out that there are alternatives to abortion (abstinence education/adoption, etc.) that could use some support, they are immediately labeled "anti-choice" or "anti-women" or "anti-poor" or "anti-minority". The Left refuses to listen to reason on the issue and the bulk of the populace is conditioned to believe that anyone who isn't "pro-choice" is some sort of Bible-thumping Nazi.
I hate discussing abortion for this reason.

To Perkins and his crew, anything except a 100% hardline stance is "pro-choice." Of course, they wouldn't call it that.
As a Catholic pro-lifer living in an overwhelmingly Protestant area, I have observed that the 100% purity standard is less evident among pro-life evangelicals than among pro-life Catholics.
Maybe Perkins and his ilk distrusted McCain on this issue because, despite his strong pro-life record, McCain has never run around preaching and thundering about it. (I happen to consider that a great virtue, but some might not.)

If you think about it, most modern wealth is because things became cheaper or rather more affordable thanks in large part to technological advances. A value-based currency can accomodate that IMHO. Yes, I may make less in absolute terms, but boy is everything really cheap.

What you have there is a light black parrot...and if she's from Africa, she probably has slave parrot ancestors (they were once kept in cages and made to eat suet for dinner). The other parrots now owe her reparations for being held down for all those years.

I'm going to quit pretending I have the endurance or desire to swim against the current. America likely has a grim time ahead of it but it's citizens have the leadership they deserve for the long haul. It's clear to me that the Republican Party is going to continue to fracture and represent fewer and fewer Americans. I expect the collapse of the Democrat Party to be much more spectacular but there's no point in anyone holding their breath, IMO. They have too many roots down to be extracted for the foreseeable future. When it happens, the landscape will be different and maybe the choices will be more clear. Whatever party emerges from all this that rejects the left and right extremes, I will hopefully be in a position to endorse. Until then, I'll just try to manage my own existence and pleasure and try to stay out from under the inevitable debris of a senseless and futile conflict. I'm just one man.

A tan to me always meant someone had way too much time on their hands to just sit around and sizzle.
There is a lot of research now that shows people have severe vitamin D deficiencies. I know one gentleman who tans now who was diagnosed with osteopenia at the age of 33. He previously avoided the sun like a vampire. His doctor told him to get out in the sun more. Vitamin D deficiencies can be linked to breast and colon cancers as well. The government has been engaged in a sun-scare campaign for years. The cosmetics industry is a billion dollar industry and has a strong lobby. Moderate sun exposure keeps you from burning and is the best way to maximize benefits from vitamin D.

Oh, I know it can be done, but the query was too good to pass up.
Interestingly, being tan was considered terribly low-class until the 1920s, because it indicated that you worked outside at some sort of low-end laboring job. Only after WWI--when most of the working class was pasty from working inside in factories--did having a tan begin to indicate the leisure to loll around and cultivate a crisp golden brown.
Yes and Coco Chanel ushered in the "tan" look.

I just spent about 15 minutes in a fruitless effort to find an article I read a few months ago about the problems caused and exacerbated by an adherence to the gold standard. It was well stated and made a number of points that I agree with. IIRC, the biggest problem had to do with not being able to avoid deflation and the very bad things that happen to an economy in that condition. I was hoping to grab a bullet list of the problems and list them, but alas, no joy.
Your suggestion that we will be subject to Mugabe-like inflation is irrational hyperbole. Carter-like is more in line with the worst case scenarios we could possibly see, and that is bad enough.

Those of us who are pale tend to get a lot of vitamin D just being near a window that has sunlight coming through it. I'll pass on the color.
Getting colored just for the sake of appearances is so unhealthy. I get what sun I need and get what color I get from the exposure I get. Just to look tanned and cool is so progressive.

Your point is well taken.
But on this question, as on so many other ones, the key issue is that of judicial activism and unrestrained federal power.
Give me a candidate who will fight legal deconstructionism!
The "social" issues should be fought out on the state level and in the legislatures (or popular referenda.) So far it has been the Left that has been shoving their moral vision onto society, but there are those on the other side who are willing to adopt the same strategy. A pox on both their houses!

Not for nothing, but MA is the most Catholic AND the most pro-abortion State in the nation. It's weird but true.
I'd go to Mass and very rarely hear an admonition against abortion, but I ALWAYS heard about 100 references that obliquely supported every Lefty notion you can think of. The State Rep. who represents my old district was an altar boy at my Church (I think he was actually a CCD teacher after that) and on his website he proudly lists NARAL as one of the organizations that endorses him.

I picked up my 3-year-old son at day care yesterday. The young boy he was playing with had a button on with the Obama "symbol" on it...no words, just the creepy "symbol."
1. That logo or whatever it is really weirds me out.
2. What kind of shit-for-brains parent puts any kind of political message on their 3-year-old? What, is the idea that my kid and other kids in his class will be "influenced positively towards The One" by this kid's button? This "indoctrination of the children" thing is perhaps the most disturbing part of the whole phenomenon.
3. My son was playing with his toy airplane the other day. When I asked him who the captain was, he said, without missing a beat, "John McCain." Attaboy. (Obviously he's heard Mom and Dad talking politics around the house and has no idea who McCain or Obama are). In a million years, though, I wouldn't dream of sending him to day care with a political message attached to him. That's just depraved.

Yeah, it's a strange phenomenon. People in MA often complain about the "Puritanism" that they contend exists up there when they don't like something, but we've got Ted Kennedy and freakin' Barney Frank winning in landslides every time they run. All sorts of conflicted people up there.
Plus, in my experience, the neighborhood Catholic Church is largely a center of "Society" (such as it is). People go to see and be seen, occasionally serve on a board or two, and consider themselves the cat's ass for two hours every Sunday. Sadly, these people often end up running the City Council, School Board, State Legislature, etc. on the backs of the "connections" they made at Church.

Unfortunately many on the far-right were unwilling to elect the most pro-life senator in Washington to the presidency, simply because they had an issue with "Shamnesty".
There's a lot of naked hatred on the right for people of Mexican descent, I'm sorry to say. All of them, even legal US citizens. It grieves me to say so, and I wouldn't say so if I hadn't seen it multiple times with my own eyes.
For these people, it is more important to get rid of the mexicans living in this country than it is to protect and save the lives of the unborn.

The Catholic Church teaches the same thing. No abortion. Period.
I am not sure what is the Catholic-evangelical percentage of the electorate but it is a pretty big number. Although Catholics are not single issue voters.
There seems to be a bit of nuance in the no:
Taken from the above newsletter.
4. Medical necessity. What about the argument that the Church must make exceptions to its teaching when abortion is medically necessary for the mother’s health or a child’s disability?
First, while the Church opposes all direct abortions, it does not condemn procedures which result, indirectly, in the loss of the unborn child as a "secondary effect." For example, if a mother is suffering an ectopic pregnancy (a baby is developing in her fallopian tube, not the womb), a doctor may remove the fallopian tube as therapeutic treatment to prevent the mother’s death. The infant will not survive long after this, but the intention of the procedure and its action is to preserve the mother’s life. It is not a direct abortion.
There also occur, very rarely, situations in which, in order to save the mother’s life, the child needs to be delivered early. But this can be done safely with a normal, induced delivery, or a caesarean section.

No republican I know is against the standard exemptions - except McCain.

I would say it is a major issue to all Catholics. And to dedicated Catholics it is without question a core requirement. And it will NEVER go away. It is a fundamental moral issue. We can debate foreign and domestic policy even the methods and structures of democracy itself, but if you believe that life begins at conception then that life has rights.
Politically we can try and hide from it as some have suggested. That may be our wisest course.
Then what are all those "Catholics" doing in the Democrat party?

Unfortunately, this is very far from a black and white issue. For some teen girls, telling their parents that they're pregnant will lead to them being beaten or worse. And for some, the father is the cause of the pregnancy. This is more common than most of us realize. There are a lot of sick people out there.
Mandating that parents be told in every case is not smart.

The land of Dixie is where most of the $10 bank notes of the Citizens Bank of Louisiana were circulated before the USA printed paper money in quantity. The TEN dollar notes, or DIX in French, were spent everywhere in the south.

re: #198 J.S.
Wow - try and image these words coming out of Obama's or Clintons' mouths.

I think there were two single issues at play in this election cycle, abortion and immigration.
I suspect that most of these myopic fools are Christian fundamentalists, and not Catholics... but I could be wrong.
I am not in favor of McCain's "immigration" policy, but Obama's was no different. And the true issue of unchecked unregulated crime-ridden illigal immigration (Mexican, Colombian, Salvadorean, Russian) was studiously avoided at least in the media in Texas.
Meanwhile, my government makes a star witness out of a dope runner and puts honorable Border Patrol agents in prison.
I'm not a myopic fool, and my Southern Baptist church (fundies to most, yes?) has NOTHING to say on the topic.
Next slur.

Whenever Presidents find they're in deep domestic troubles, they'll turn to the Middle East...see if that can divert the public's attention...(I think in the past, also, with a Democratic president in office, the President tends to go after U.S. allies -- Canada, "I think we'll renegotiate NAFTA" etc. -- it's an easy target to beat up on...because allies are friends, not enemies, you can talk tough and get away with it; ditto with Israel).

re: #454 Charles
I wholeheartedly, respectfully and passionately disagree.
The way I see it, who are you, or anyone other than the actual parents to say when a parent should not be told of their own child's intended life threatening medical procedure?
Let parents parent! It isn't our job to parent for them. If the parent is abusive, that definitely is a problem, but not one I need to be involved in, or try to protect the child from in this manner. They are separate issues completely. If the parent is abusive, the child should inform the police! This is the correct recourse. Your suggestion, or those against Prop 4, is akin to outlawing alcohol because some people drink and drive. The parent's abusive tendencies have nothing to do with whether or not they should be notified. Again, let parents parent their children, right or wrong!
That being said, Prop 4 in California allowed for alternative parental notification to uncles, or someone else in those cases of abuse (or incest).
If you wish to vote, or advocate on the basis of extremes, let us discuss the extreme where a 8 year old little girl, goes in to the doctor to get an abortion, and in the process dies. The first phone call that the parents would get regarding their child (whom they probably thought was at a friends home, or school) is that she is DEAD. "Mr. Jones, this is Doctor Smith, I am sorry to report that your child underwent an abortion today, and was accidentally killed. We are extremely sorry!" You the parent thought she was in school!

Actually paternal pregnancy is extremely rare. However pregnancy or sexual abuse by a step-father does occur fairly frequently and abortion should be an option. And there is no doubt that the girls life could be in extreme danger.
Maybe conservatives should actually be conservative and stop it with government intervention. Just a thought.

real confederate money esp if it isn't one of the rare ones isn't all that valuable i once got one for `10$ but a bill from the united states of America at the same time is worth a whole lot more.
___
DIX notes are PRE-Civil War by 20 years or so. Citizens Bank and Canal Bank were the two major banks in New Orleans that issued bank notes that were in widespread use throughout the southern and western US. The valuable ones are the ones actually signed by the Treasurer of the banks.
The same holds true for Confederate currency, signed bills are valuable but the unsigned were picked up as spoils of war and are as plentiful as Monopoly money.

I'm curious - I was wondering if anyone here has had any incidents with movers.
The reason I ask is that my intuition was really lit up last night when I started researching my mover to more of a degree than I had previously. The mover I was using sent up a couple of red flags, but when I was not getting a response on the date the mover would actually show up to load my things for my move that I got really nervous. Well, I went online and checked out consumer complaints that this is not a new thing for that particular company. And apparently the date of delivery is often suspect. So I fired the mover this morning before they could get their paws on my stuff. I did give a deposit but I was more than five days ahead, so they are supposed to refund the deposit. I sent a letter certified mail, so if worse come to worst I can get my credit card company involved. I finally hired a well-known mover with a stellar reputation. So, I may have to pay twice as much, but I think that is worth the peace of mind. I'm certainly not saying that anything would've happened, but the little voice inside my head was sure screaming at me to do something.
The funny thing is that the original scam mover has an "A" rating by the Better Business Bureau. I looked at the government's website for complaints on moving companies and they have a tremendous amount of complaints including holding property hostage. Clearly the BBB is not the best place to go for information.
Any similar experiences?

You may not like it Tex, but it is the truth.
I saw one guy over at MM's, a fundamentalist Christian, suggesting that we should deport all Mexicans here in the US, even legal US citizens, and send our army to the border to shoot all Mexicans on sight to prevent them from getting in or re-entering. And he had a LOT of support.
It's foolish to try and deny what is, and it makes no sense to try and supress information that is ugly simply because you feel like it threatens your religion. If you're a Christian you should be invested in purging these people from the faith, not enabling them.

This is an area where "legislating morality" is a must. Many liken at least some of the abortions to murder, which we clearly legislate against and no one argues that the government should stay out of the murder question. Some states have laws that consider the death of a fetus murder (or some form of it) if caused by battery, so this is not an extreme position.

Actually, Wrath, for teachers (I believe this is true both in the States and in Canada) the legal position of a teacher (with respect to the student) is that of a parent..."in locus parentis"...and if a teacher suspects that a child is being abused (sexually, phsyically) then there are procedures which must be followed. In most cases the teacher must, must immediately inform the principal of the school -- typically this is followed up by a social worker being informed -- then a parent/teacher conference and/or police involvement. But if you don't report a case of abuse (if you ignore your suspicions) then, the teacher can be fired (job termination).

As for the one person at MM (I presume Malkin and not Michael Moore?), the existence of one racist person isn't evidence of anything, because it was never that racism existed, just the amount. And of course that person could be a lying Moby.

Here is my thing on abortion:
Let the states handle it. That way voters have more control of the issue. They also get to deal with the consequences either way. Want to ban abortions and have adoptions? Well it is the state that deals with the adoption costs, so let the voters in that state take that on.
Not a single woman in California won any new rights when Roe v Wade was decided. In some ways the existing abortion law in California (signed into law by Ronald Reagan) was more "liberal" than what Roe initially laid down.
Point is that I don't want the Federal Government making those decisions when the states have to deal with funding the consequences.
Republicans should be opposed to Roe on the basis that it isn't the Federal Govts business to be involved in for either side.

Furthermore, in that Austrian case, Elizabeth Fritzl did run away several times only to have the *police* return her to her "father", who then when she turned 18, faked her joining a cult, imprisoned her in a bomb shelter he built, and raped her repeatedly for the next *24 frickin' years*, fathering 7 kids (1 of whom died at 3 days), leaving her and 3 kids to live their lives in that cellar with no outside light (he took 3 up to live with him), until this past May when the gig was up (complicated ending). While most parents should have the right to know their daughter is having an abortion, the girl should always have the option of getting permission via a judge (who is not a creationist).

I was thinking the same. It sucks that I bought a home I could afford and make all my payments on time, whats this world coming to!
Way back in 1999, I left my job at MCI, because I could see from little cubby hole just how mismanaged the place was. Two years later the execs were sent off to jail. In 2000 I saw my life savings evaporate when the Clinton bubble burst. In August of 2001 I was laid off from my job at a place called "Avant!". That was after their execs were found guilty and sent off to jail. I was still unemployed on 9/11 and was not able to get a job until March of 2002.
I accumulated debt, but was never late and never missed a mortgage payment or any other bill payment. For the next several years I saved and denied myself things that I wanted and paid back every last dime and kept never was late with a mortgage payment. I ate rice and beans and beans and rice.
Where was my bailout? Who was going to keep em in my home if I fell behind? Actually, I'm glad to say NOBODY, because I worked my way out all by myself without burdening anyone else. I know what hard times are and I don't wish them on anybody, but when they come I sure as hell resent others putting the burden on me!

Comparing child abuse and the inherent obligations of the State to intervene ie., DYFS, to parents losing their rights to be made aware of a serious medical procedure that may likely have tremendous psychological harm on the child if not potential medical harm through negligence, is inappropriate. Of course children cannot have the sophistication to notify authorities of child abuse. But the parent's loss of rights there was brought on by them (presuming they are guilty). In an abortion situation, the child is subject to surrogates performing parental roles giving advice they often is monstrous and more importantly, leading to irrevokable results. Sorry, I don't get your point.

There are some issues that transcend States rights...Brown vs. school board or racial discrimination..dred scott..whatever..
I think child abuse is one of those issues.. I don't care what Alabama or any other State thinks of it../using Alabama only as an EXAMPLE.

But banning all parents from being notified is the solution? I'm no zealot, but I have experience with public schools and I can assure you that the motive behind the law is not necessarily protecting children from physical, even fatal (if that's what you're implying) consequences. It's a way to inculcate the values of the school admin./nurse into the child, rather than allowing the parents to convey their values to the children.
Man, I really hate talking about abortion.

Yes, there are. Those "issues" can be found in our Constitution. If it's not in our Constitution it has no business being in our Federal government. Anyone who wants abortion to be a right (or to federally banned) should work to amend our Constitution. That is how our nation was designed to function.

The word ‘British’ can be as offensive as ‘negro’ and ‘half-caste’, according to a race relations body.
The publicly-funded organisation’s views have been adopted by Caerphilly council in South Wales for a leaflet advising staff on how to deal with the public.
In a section on what words or phrases not to use to avoid causing offence, the leaflet solemnly informs the council’s 9,000 workers: ‘The idea of “British” implies a false sense of unity – many Scots, Welsh and Irish resist being called British and the land denoted by the term contains a wide variety of cultures, languages and religions.’

Who's watching the counters? From what I heard on Hugh Hewitt, the Lt. Gov is a Dem and he can appoint 2 judges from a heavily Dem district to oversee it. Each ballot that is clearly marked for a candidate goes into one pile or the other. Any ballots with smudges, non-stright lines or that are questionable go into another pile to be scrutinized and either certified for Coleman Franken or tossed

re: #530 Charles
My position has nothing to do with Abortion at all actually. This I find is where most of the emotions, and confusion on this issue stem.
A child must get permission from a parent to get a Tattoo, to go on a school field trip, on their report card, and pretty much to do anything other than this specific medical treatment. I am expecting the rules to apply equally to all decisions made by minors, and disagree with creating specific treatment for any serious medical treatment, including Abortions. What has happened, is that those that believe in a "right to abortion" have carved out a special exception to the standard and universal notification laws, to give Abortion special treatment within the law. This is not right.
Furthermore, there are many reasons why an abusive parent might be encouraged to be abusive upon notification of their children s actions. These would include a child that gets a tattoo, a child that gets a piercing, a child that goes on a field trip without permission, a child that gets plastic surgery, and so on. All of the aforementioned, I am pretty sure, require not only parental notification but actual parental permission before they can be performed. According to the logic that a horrible abusive parent might beat their child upon knowledge that the child wants these treatments, or others unmentioned., it seems that parental notification in general should be discouraged, or made unlawful. Thus, it would be the State that is not making the decisions for our children, instead of their parents.
Child abuse is horrible, and that is why it is illegal. Notification is solely that. However, I believe that the abuse scenario, which I 1st heard used by an advocate against Prop 4 who worked for Planned Parenthood, is really just an attempt to tug on well meaning voters heartstrings.
Again, your proposed solution (special notification treatment for Abortion) is like outlawing alcohol in general because of the great harm of drunk drivers.

How is it enabling child abuse? If a child has marks, authorities intervene and the parents are now under investigation. As they should be preliminarily. The child should be encouraged to tell school officials especially if the abuse is occurring in the home. Can this situation be abused? Of course. I do DYFS defense work (as an attorney) so I know all about it. Many parents are falsely accused. But what does that situation have to do with a child who wants to potentially (at least arguably) harm herself by getting an abortion when no other medical procedure like that would ever be permitted w/o parental consent? They are distinct situations.

I don't get it.
There is no federal murder statute. You murder someone, you are up on state charges (unless it is a federal agent or whatnot).
Point is that :
A) Murder is bad
B) The states handle it
When people beat murder charges, the Federal Government can still step in and prosecute as a civil rights matter (which is oddly argued as an interstate commerce matter, IIRC). Feds prosecuted murders as civil rights violations during the civil rights era when jurors would let lynch mobs off.
So, if something is universally regarded as heinous, the Feds can still act. Even on child abuse - as a violation of civil rights.
But the precedent is clear - the states are supposedly sovereign and Republicans are supposedly for protecting that. I don't want the Federal Government making and enforcing those laws, even if I agree with them, because it gives them the leeway to make the ones I don't agree with. Let me work within my community to make the laws that work for my community.

If the same thing had happened to a gay activist, the media would be screaming "hate crime" from coast-to-coast. It would lead on the evening news all over the world. As with the terrorist assault on the Michigan church, it is media hypocrisy that empowers these thugs, and nothing else. Leftists are acutely aware of the double-standard, and media complicity, and they exploit it whenever possible.
I learned this when I started receiving death threats from Dixie Chickistas a couple of years ago, for nothing other than publicly asserting that Americans do, in fact, have a constitutional right to criticize media figures.

Doesn't it seem wrong to limit parents' rights in the case of abortion, when any number of other things parents must be notified of could just as easily set off an abusive parent's rage? Why are we picking and choosing?
It also seems that there must be a way to accommodate the abusive parent in the law without throwing the baby out with the bath water (no pun intended).

If the reason for not informing parents about the situation is that they may get mad and abuse the child once they find out, then do they offer the same consideration to a kid who had to get his stomach pumped after OD'ing on drugs. Mom and dad might get pretty pissed when they find out about that.

Just So. This prompts me to relate something I know about these situations. A long time ago, while still a college student, I took a job (because I needed one) with the Neighborhood Youth Corps. I don't know if this organization is even still around, however I will relate that my duties consisted of handing out free condoms (counseling) and checking with employers to see if my kids were going to work (they weren't). I have many great stories about my time there and the insights I gained as a pretty innocent kid suddenly immersed in the social welfare system. But this I can tell you for a fact - the number one problem was INCEST. Think about that when you get righteous about parental reporting.

If a state should be found to regularly offend against legitimate federal protections, recourse can be had to the federal courts. If, for example, we find that Oregon physicians are bumping off an extraordinary number of Bulgarian-American patients, we might check into it with the 14th amendment in hand.
In the meantime I, being foursquare against euthanasia, am free to do eveything in my power to stop it being adopted by my own state. And I am also free to try to persuade the people of Oregon to change their hearts and minds.

re: #632 Charles
I've already answered that. A certain percentage of teenagers who get pregnant come from families where they will be beaten or worse if their parents are told they're pregnant. If you mandate informing the parents in all cases, you're enabling child abuse in a certain number of those cases.
Then you have laws that kick in to protect those children shoud that occur as I have discussed. There are thousands of situations where children do far worse things than get pregnant that lead to corporal punishment if not child abuse. I handle my share of juvenile criminal defense cases and I have spoken to more than on parent over the years who has kicked the s--t out of their kid for breaking a law or for even lesser transgressions. The balance here is your desire to police the parents vs. the rights of parents. This is an old argument. There are no degrees required for being a parent and many a piss-poor at it. It it no way excuses their bad behavior. Child abuse is intolerable - obviously. But, you cannot let children run around as if they are adults just because they do horrible things with horrible consequenses. They are children. The fact that they commit an "adult act" does not earn them the privlege of avoiding parental scrutiny.

re: #615 Charles
I am sorry that you consider my concerns for the right of parents to parent their children is "callous and unfeeling". I personally believe they are quite the opposite. I am thinking of all the parents who are going to be cut off from their ability to make the decisions for their minor children, especially when it concerns any medical procedure that can be life threatening.
that being said, I will repeat that the Prop 4 that was proposed in California, actually had a clause to allow children in the situation you have described (abusive parent, incest, etc) to bypass their actual parents and instead us another relative or guardian. (This of course however allows simply for the child to claim abuse to bypass the notification requirement)
I notice however that you did not respond specifically to any of the arguments that I made, but instead just made a broad dismissal of the messenger. This, of course however is your right.
I am sorry that I am not able to change your opinion, and expect that this last sentiment is mutual.

re: #606 WrathofG-d
Wrath, I feel for you and as a father of a teenage daughter, I can say that I would almost feel the same way, but would put it a tad bit differently. For me it is simply having the chance to inform my daughter that even though she may have made a mistake, we still love her and want what is best for here, which means in my view, to have the baby and for us to help her if possible.
For the notification thing, I believe that there could be a compromise by having a mediator decide if the minor should have to notify or not. This could mean that they ask teachers, acquaintances or even psychiatrists to determine if there is a "special" need to not notify the parent. Either way, this is tricky, because no one on both sides, wants to see child abuse because of this.

re: #632 Charles
There is also the issue of child rape.
As it so happens, a child who is raped is often raped by someone s/he knows and is sometimes a family member. This was a matter of concern when the death penalty for child rapists was debated - sounds good on the surface, but it creates an incentive for the child to never report the rape. Put a dollop of pregnancy on top of that, and you have a very complicated situation. Complicated practically and ethically.
Most readers lead lives full of love and compassion that they only recognize as humdrum family life. Some of the most defenseless people in our society don't have that. Legislative dictats don't help them. What you hope for is that a teacher or a school nurse can gain the child's trust and get her the help she needs, and one hopes that teacher/nurse has the ethical capacity to make the right decisions, including being able to distinguish between a girl in trouble who fears shame of mom and dad and an incest victim who fears death.
I'd rather have a group of concerned, dedicated people try to work those details out within my community than have the outcome predetermined by legislative dictat from Washington (one subject to radical swings in interpretation from administration to administration). If one is libertarian minded and seeks a just outcome, he will tend to support the local professionals rather than the blind dictat from above.

It seems to me that if the school system is somehow able to discern that the child is in a condition that requires surgery without parental knowledge, then they should probably know enough about her to figure out if she'd be in danger of abuse upon parental notification. The school is taking that responsibility on themselves (in my view, for political/social reasons), so maybe they should be required to actually take responsibility. It's all WAY too much government involvement, in any case.
I imagine that 100% of 13 year old girls are terrified upon finding out that they're pregnant, and I can also imagine a bunch of them saying "My parents will KILL me if they find out", but they say that about a D on a book-report, too.
I have no solution for the problem, but the blanket denial of parental rights rubs me the wrong way, big time.

I Disagree.
If there is reason to suspect that the child's life will be placed in danger because of informing her parents she is pregnant, then the child needs to be removed from that situation and placed into protective care. Other than that the parents should be told. I am very disturbed that people are willing to leave a child in a horrible situation in order to protect her "right to choose". Protecting children is one of the things everyone feels is vital that is why we have Amber Alerts and Megan's Law. But when it comes to abortion somehow the only way to "protect" the child is to let her quietly have an abortion and then go back to the place where she was abused to begin with.
If my daughter cannot have a life saving medical procedure, Pierce her ears or get a tattoo with out my consent and knowledge why on Earth should she be allowed to have an abortion?

They have the right to civil unions which give them all the "privileges" afforded married people. They get all the bells and whistles of marriage. They can even tell friends they are married. They just cannot legally hold themselves out as a married couple since "marriage" has another legal meaning.
No, I do not want to be drawn into a "separate but equal" argument on this. This is not a Civil Rights issue.

Yes this is a tough issue especially with rape or incest. No one is saying it is not. But, the rights of the parent are paramount here. I am sure most parents here would be loving and understanding to the degree possible. Many in the world would be angry and unsupporting. Again however, that is the nature of parents. They do not always do what is right. The answer is not however to deny them this otherwise precious right to counsel, support and love their child at the most vulnerable time of their child's life.

re: #663 lone_wolf_in_illinois
I appreciate the compromise, but your response shows that you obviously do not live in California. :) My point here is that although I disagree still with your compromise as it simply creates more people to have the right to parent the child before the parents, giving this right to "mediators", teachers, social workers, etc., would still simply mean that the parents NEVER get the right of knowing what is going on with their own children.
It is not the job of the State to control what goes on within the household in this manner. The act itself is illegal, and that resolves that issue. In this instance the State is taking it upon itself to tell individuals how they should parent their children. That to me is just wrong. The extreme argument that some parents might abuse their children if they found out that they are having sex, or needed an abortion is simply designed to use a small minority experience to confuse us with emotions to what all of our HEADS know is right.
There are a small amount of negative consequences to every action in the world. Allowing alcohol to be legal, allows drunk driving. Allowing couples to have children, allows for sexual abuse. Allowing women to walk around in public allows for rape, etc., etc., etc.
Like I have said over and over again, if you are going to carve out a special law based on the fear factor that knowledge might cause abuse, you would have to outlaw notification in general. Because when it comes to an erratic adult abuser, pretty much anything COULD set them off.
Its my child, and I have a RIGHT to know when some stranger is going to cut her open, and put her very life at risk!
You want a horrible extreme situation? Imagine, as a parent, getting a phone call from a doctor you have never heard of, at a time you thought your daughter was playing with friends, that your daughter is now DEAD!
If the State believes that a child is no mature enough to get her ears pierced without parental notification, how can we allow her to get life threatening surgery!?

GeeWiz Wed, Nov 12, 2008 4:02:22pm |
Charles, I understand your position and I'm just as concerned with abusive parents. As a father of two daughters, I reject the state's interference with my parental authority. If my daughters, while driving caused an accident with mortal causalities, I would ultimately bear the consequences of their actions as they were minors under my control. I would like to know just where we are willing to draw the line of parental control and parental responsibility. Both the car accident and an abortion include the cessation of an individual's life. Just how can the state dictate two different positions for parental responsibility on a singular issue?
I suspect that your concerns are correct but I do not agree that they are as common as parents that love their children a would appreciate the knowledge of a pregnancy and assist their daughter in making a decision that would be in her best interest. I, for one, would appreciate that ability without the interference of the government. I think that most people that have children would support my position. I love my kids more than life itself and I think I have their best interests at heart. I cannot say that about Planned Parenthood.
BTW, all of my 3 children are now productive adults and never presented me with this situation. I guess good parenting does work. State solutions never do.

Maybe already posted, but OT: Augsburg College freshman apparently called a racist and attacked on Election Night for wearing a McCain-Palin pin. Police on campus and in Minneapolis believe her. Also apparently a pattern of harassment on campus against her. Kid's from AK, a hockey player and hunter, and a big Sarah Palin fan.

She's become a truly despicable person.
I don't know what happened to her. I seem to recall that she used to be pretty reasonable. I can only guess that she's become poisoned by the toxic nature of our politics these days.
I'm very grateful that you and the other lizards have not allowed this site to degenerate in to a mirror of the sites and people who have gone out of their way to make themselves so contemptible.

As a parent of 3 children, I cannot say here what I would do to an abusive parent without being banned by you. I suspect that I am the norm and the premise you present are the exception. I have noticed that discussions of this nature create a problem between those that have children and those who do not. Those that have children and abuse them do not deserve the privilege to live never mind the ability to pro-create. Like I've said before, most parents love their children more than anything and should not be punished by the actions of the few. Evil exists and government dictates cannot expunge it, only love can.

Rather than give a negative ding to a post I disagree with, I am more likely to give a positive ding to a post that expresses what I thought about the post I disagree with. It probably won't make you feel any better if I go down-ding your post directly, but I think I'll do it anyway.

Speaking of screwy abortion issues, here's one we had locally about a year and a half ago.
According to the linked story, a 14-year old girl went to DSS for an abortion. A detective (not sure how he got involved) wanted to make a case for statutory rape against a 27-year old suspected of being the father (age of consent here is 16). The sheriff claims that the DSS worker advised the kid to get the abortion when the detective was off duty, such that he couldn't get DNA evidence to use against the guy. So, what does the sheriff's office do? Charge the DSS worker with obstruction of justice. Charges were later dismissed.
Two things jump out at me from the story -- first, the girl is only 14, and there is not a single mention of a parent or parents in the entire story. And second is the quote at the end from the DSS attorney, regarding the warrant to gain access to DSS files in order to further the case: “The issue is what is necessary to preserve the integrity of the department’s records (emphasis added). While I’m asking the court to quash the search warrant, I’m also asking that if the court will not do that, it will limit the disclosures of the records and not allow them to go on a fishing expedition (emphasis added)."
In other words, she's interested in protecting DSS. I guess the welfare of the 14-year old kid and the possibility that there might be a man twice her age out there statutorilty raping kids is a secondary issue to her. But then, she is the DSS attorney.
The entire situation is just strange.
For what it's worth...

10,000-plus ''unwanted'' sites
Australia's mandatory internet filter is being primed to block 10,000 websites as part of a blacklist of unspecified ''unwanted content'', Broadband Minister Stephen Conroy revealed in Federal Parliament. The 10,000 blacklisted websites would be blocked in addition to 1300 websites identified by the Australian Communications and Media Authority.

Just for the record: my comments about the issues of proposition 4, mentioned above through conversations inter alia, with Charles, are not about Abortion, but instead Parental Notification.
The issue has nothing to do with Abortion rights; but instead Parental rights.
I'd also add that the law is sexist against males.

As a divorced male parent, with once custodial authority of 3 children, I can heartily agree. It works both ways folks. The left can never understand how some rules they support can turn around and bite them in the ass. The left needs to understand the meaning of Karma.

re: #454 Charles
Unfortunately, this is very far from a black and white issue. For some teen girls, telling their parents that they're pregnant will lead to them being beaten or worse. And for some, the father is the cause of the pregnancy. This is more common than most of us realize. There are a lot of sick people out there.
Mandating that parents be told in every case is not smart.
Thinking out loud here -
Once the mother drops the sentence "I don't want this baby", the state has to take an interest - if only because if she keeps the baby it may end up in foster care, or be abandoned.
It should be easy enough to find out if an immediate relative is the cause. The baby's DNA would be almost the same as the mother's. Seems to me that there should be mandatory DNA testing if the mother says "I don't want the baby". Not enough to incriminate anybody who wasn't a relative (but if she out-and-out said it was rape, then a fuller DNA profile can be taken, to get an idea of the perp).
If it turns out to be incest (or rape) then arrest warrants would be served, and the woman gets her "right to choose". If the mother's dad did it, then the slimeball would be behind bars before he even knew what happened.

re: #685 The Shadow Do
Most here are reacting as responsible parents naturally react. In fact I react the same since I try to be a good parent. However, the problem cases, victims of incest and rape, are not served by blanket reporting dictates - and there are many of them. They just aren't served in spite of what one might hope. Hurt on hurt for the innocents.
Incest, no. By definition you couldn't trust the family.
But a rape? The only drawback I could see in not telling the parents is that daddy might grab a gun, a rope, and torture implements and track down the boy. Stopping that form of 'rough justice' really isn't high on my list of priorities...
