Personally, I'm lovin' it :-)

I've been day trading puts and calls on the QQQ ETF and doing pretty darned well. With volatility so high and with the market not about to go anywhere far beyond the limits of it's range for a long time to come, this is a great chance to make some moolah!

I trade intra-day for aliving and this has been the most rewarding experience of my life. I've got the best guidance ever and hang out in a room where we're all raking it in. My 401k stuff is all fixed rate, no mutual funds. So it's like entering another dimension when I hear the very sad stories of others whose life savings are evaporating. I don't mean to sound cokcy, and those stories would be mine if I were in any other line of work. All I can say is I hope the trend is changing soon (although my guy says no) so we can all feel strong and take on the new world odor.

Don't buy the rally. If the Dow gets to 9500 again go short in a big way. Check out SDS.

UltraShort S&P500 ProShares is an exchange-traded fund incorporated in the USA.
The Fund seeks daily investment results that correspond to twice (200%) the
inverse (opposite) of the daily performance of the S&P 500 Index.

I've been on Wall St for close to 20 years and I'd bet a kidney that we will see 7500 before we see 10000 on the Dow.

But if he says, "you know, I changed my mind. Let's keep everyone's taxes low" then there may be a quick reversal.

At $50 for a one time use item... I am not crazy about that. Realize it can be used by someone else. But not the kind of product I would buy that would be likely used only one time.

The minute our duly elected Looters start debating the 401k snatch 7500 will be the good old days.

I just know the Dems have been salivating for the day the stock market will crash so they can politically sell the idea of snatching our 401(k)s. I think the DOW will have to go below 6000 before that happens.

Oh that was a juicy thread. Noam ended with "bite me" in #800 and then cognito wouldn't relent on his insistence a 10 year old writing about Jendal and exorcism was adequate proof of a point Charles was making. Charles got fed up and finally drooped the hammer in #834 telling him don't bother emailing either. By #875 the pugnacious twit had already emailed Charles. Ha!

Pugnacious was the first thought to come to mind and upon looking this up in my book of synonyms I couldn't have chosen a better word to describe him: belligerent, bellicose, aggressive, contentious, warlike, combative, and quarrelsome.

157 karmic_inquisitor  Thu, Nov 13, 2008 2:30:27pm

I know there are traders and active investors here but I am not sure who follows technicals here. The DOW put up a technical signal today that says "bottom." It has put in an "inverted head and shoulders" pattern. It is a variation of a triple bottom except that it is A) rare in comparison and B) more reliable at predicting a reversal.

An explanation of this kind of pattern can be found here (scroll down).

What confirms this as a pattern is the relatively light volume on today's rally when compared to the other 2 drops. Patterns in charts basically record market psychology, and the light volume on the "right shoulder" (today's "V") tells us that we have run low on sellers. As scary as things got, sellers said "screw it - I will ride it into the ground but I am not selling" while buyers jumped in at the technical price point, betting that there was a floor.

The low volume also says that we may be clear of the forced liquidations - if we were knocking out stops and triggering margin calls, we'd have seen more volume. Look at today's volume compared to the other two "v's" in the pattern - smaller.

While a pattern like this won't convince many people, it will bring in traders tomorrow, and they will add buying volume knowing there is a floor. Shorts will sweat the weekend and we should see more volume starting Monday. If the volume sticks and the buying really kicks in, those still short will be running for cover and we should see some nice movement upward. If it works out we should get above 10,000 by XMAS and then go higher, then fall back and bounce off 10,000. That is called the "neckline" and 10,000 is where it would line up on the chart if we assume it takes us a few weeks to get there.

If volume doesn't kick in then the pattern fails and we see what happens next.

All speculation.

re: #12 Salem

Political implications aside, I hope the market continues to go up.

Your hope will be rewarded. Over time. The market has never done anything but go up, over sufficiently long periods.

Short to medium term, we're probably stuck in a trading range for quite a while. When prices drop - the low- to mid-8000s seem to be the bottom - bargain-hunters come in and scoop up underpriced stocks, driving prices back up. When prices rise - harder to say how much, but the low- to mid-9000s seem to be the ceiling - billions upon billions of dollars sitting in millions of 401k accounts starts cashing out in order to redistribute those accounts to bring them back into some semblance of diversified balance, with many if not most of them way too heavy in equities. So there's resistance on both ends.

A global recession is already factored into the markets, but really bad or really good news could break this pattern in either direction. Sadly, conditions are more favorable for downward movement as large corporations fail and unemployment soars over the next few months, without much hope of any really good news on the horizon unless major adjustments are made to past economic reports (which sometimes happens) and upcoming ones being unexpectedly rosy.

There's no limit. You can sell it 2 minutes later. Unless you have insider information in which cas you can;t do any trades in the stock.

The difference is the taxes. If you sell it in less than 1 year or 1 day any gain gets taxed at your regular income tax rates. If you hold on to it for at least 1 year dn1 day then your gain gets taxed at long term capital gains rate (currently 15% sure to go up to 20-25 under O)

FWIW, Cognito knew s/he got under skins and would play that angle too often.

Last night s/he was pretending that Jindal wasn't a kook of sorts because his exorcism story was old and only one source, thus implying it belonged in the Obama-esque "distraction" heap.

When one considers that the single source was Jindal himself, and that exorcism has yet to be demonstrated in a double blind study as an effective treatment of cancer, the kook label should be appropriate. Yet Cognito tried to play the game of "make them stand their ground" instead of perhaps contributing to the conversation.

Charles and many others have seen it before and got tired of it. Can't blame him even if I liked going at it with Cognito from time to time.

This board now has a vacancy for "dishonest rhetorician". Applications taken on the next open registration thread.

re: #150 Maui Girl

some investment advice please: let's say I want to buy some stock that's gonna pay big dividends in a few weeks. How quickly can I sell the stock that I just bought?

You have to purchase the stock before the ex-dividend date, and sell it after the ex-dividend date. So the shortest term you can own the stock is 3 days. Usually the stock will lose value equivalent to the dividend on the ex-dividend date.

i.e. If you bought a stock at 10.00 the day before the ex date, and it paid a dividend of 1.00 its share price would drop to 9.00 provided there were no other changes in the market on that day.

I was under the assumption that putting as much as possible into my Roth 401(k) will allow me to buy stocks dirt-cheap now, which are pretty much guaranteed to rise in value by the time I retire in 40 years.

Is this a valid assumption? Should I put even more of my income into my retirement savings?

If you're 40 years from retirement, and you're putting a set amount of money into a decent stock mutual fund every payday, increase the amount when you get a raise, and keep doing this for the 40 years, you will be in excellent shape when you retire. And yes, even with the market in the tank, you should be investing in stock mutual fund(s).

All I see is noise, at an unprecedented level.

But hey, if you can call a bottom the same day it happens, more power to you, and do you need a pool boy?

Around October 12, 27 and today. The volume numbers tell the story as well. Only way to be certain is if volume picks up in the next few sessions on an uptrend. If we hit the neckline it is a done deal, though any number of announced policy shifts from DC could cause things to spiral downward again. For now, look at a company like CF - seriously undervalued but beaten up like all else. No brainer buy. Ubiquitous fear is the only basis for selling it. Pull fear out of the market and things will roll again.

Yeah know, in the world of stocks when everyone is saying something, it is frequently wrong. Right now, it's common to hear that the current recession will be a long one. It's tempting to bet the other way.

Long or short, there's little doubt that current stock prices represent a buying opportunity for those with reasonably long time horizons.

I've maxed out my contributions to my 401k to take advantage of this, and will probably tap into my 50+ catchup allowance shortly for the same reason. I don't need the money for 10 to 15 years. Having the bargains continue for some time doesn't sound like a bad thing - it sounds like an opportunity.

Of course, Obama and Company are already salivating over all that dough piled up in 401k accounts beyond the reach of taxes. I'm waiting to hear how everyone who did the responsible thing and saved for a retirement free from dependence on government aid is now "rich" and needs to be taxed into place. An announcement of anything along these lines will pretty much scotch any hope of economic recovery for several years.

It may make sense to buy the stock just before it goes ex-dividend, but then hold the stock. If you buy the stock just before the ex date, you will pay a premium for the stock equivalent to the dividend. So it is really no bargain.

The Museum of Science and Industry is one of the few buildings remaining from the 1893 Columbian Exposition (which is also where the first Ferris Wheel was built). It is near the University of Chicago campus, which is beautiful (that is also where the Oriental Institute is). The Midway Plaisance there was designed to be a Venetian canal, but was never flooded because to do so would have inundated the South Side. It was the Midway Plaisance that housed the cheap attractions at the 1893 Fair, which gave the term "midway" to such areas in carnivals and circuses.

The Museum of Science and Industry has a captured German U-boat which one can tour. It is also, btw, where Edward Teller gave my late father the go-ahead to develop his process for producing tritium, which made the hydrogen bomb possible.

re: #157 karmic_inquisitor

Although I don't put much faith in graphology, I'll agree that somewhere in the low- to mid-8000s there seems to be a bottom, for whatever reason. The Dow has bounced off this level four or five times now.

I also agree that a close above 10,000 would mark an important psychological milestone. But graphology only seems to work at all when there isn't news driving the markets, or at least no news other than what the graphologists are generating. A huge spike in layoffs, the collapse of a large auto company, or an unexpectedly favorable string of profit announcements could all drive the market into new territory very quickly, making hash out of the charts.

re: #254 GeeWiz

In this market, I've seen major company's P&E's drop into single digits which is very rare. On my account I track Cisco Sys., ADM & Conagra Foods among others. They all have P&E's in the 8 range. Talk about bargain basement prices! If I had the money, I would be buying into them big time but alas I do not. This is a market that will reward investors with a long term strategy very well.

Can only agree. I also rebalanced my 401k a few weeks ago - the plummet in stock prices had left me with a too-large cash percentage, which I solved by using it to buy more stocks.

The P&Es are screaming "Buy!" like I've never seen before. As you mention, even tech companies like Cicso have dropped into the single digits, which is unheard of.

Of course, there isn't a whole lot of E around to ratio against P these days. But levels like these seem artificially low.

Just my two cents, but I'd stick with Kimber mags, were it up to me. Since conceivably the time could come when you'd have a lot riding on them, and you probably wouldn't want to have any nagging little doubt about proper feed. The manufacturer knows that its name rides on all its equipment performing at its best, including magazines. A third party doesn't necessarily have the same level of concern. Like I said, just an opinion.

President-elect Barack Obama, plotting his strategy on Iran, is getting this advice from a panel of American diplomats and other experts: Don't pile on economic and military threats; it doesn't help.

"An attack would almost certainly fail" while coercing Iran with economic sanctions has very little chance of success, the experts say in a report to be presented next week at a conference on the future of US-Iran policy.

Far more likely to succeed, said former US ambassadors Thomas Pickering and James F. Dobbins, Columbia University scholar Gary G. Sick and 17 other experts, is to "open the door to direct, unconditional and comprehensive negotiations at the senior diplomatic level."

I got into the market in the late 80's and did pretty well. P&E's in the 11 to 18 point range were considered "buys" anything from 19 to 25 was considered risky and anything over 25 was considered dangerous like betting on a long shot at the races.

I got divorced in the mid 90's and lost my holdings. I maintained my account by paying the quarterly maintenance fees. When Anthem BCBS went public (my health ins provider) I was given 24 shares of stock valued at $960.00. I transferred it into my account and thru trading turned it into $6300.00 by December of 2007. It was free money and I played with it. When my account fell to less than $500.00 during this sell-off, I deposited 1K into my account to take advantage of bargain prices. I'm now debating whether to duplicate it or double it since I know that there will come a day I will regret not putting more cash in to purchase stocks.

I need to mention that I own a small business and I have to balance the needs of my business versus wants for my portfolio.

I say let President Barack H. Obama talk to them all he wants. Hell, in Tehran, even. Screw it, invite Putin, too.

To get the U.S President into talks dignifies the Iranian Thugocracy.
Prior to any talks they would have to renounce their call for the destruction of Israel & cease activity in Iraq at a minimum.
To me though, the biggest problem is that Obama is too smitten & would get steamrolled.

That will happen. There is no way that the Dems will leave about 2-3 Trillions dollars out there untaxed. I am already hearing grumblings at work from folks saying they will take their money out now and pay a huge tax penalty instead of it all getting eaten up over 10-15 years by taxes. People are getting scared and pi$$ed.

The 'race nationalists' in Europe are just pissed they aren't under the radar anymore via LGF. So now they are playing the whole, 'our fight is better than yours'. This makes me ask, what 'fight' are they referring to? The only 'fighting' going on is an exchange in the 'arena of ideas'. Every so often some of these 'ideas' leads to action, the uncovering of evidence, a letter to government, a phone call...etc. In the 'arena of ideas' it is necessary to be intellectually honest and be willing to stand by what you say or change your opinion when shown to be wrong.

These 'race nationalists' aren't capable of 'intellectual honesty' for they are driven by their emotional desire for racial purity and that desire trumps all. In that alone they lose on all fronts.

If, in the event the fight against Islamofascism spreads and expands out of the theatres of conflict...Iraq and Afghanistan (it has, is, and will), it becomes necessary for the fight of 'ideas' to become a real fight of 'physical' that will still not change my perspective. They are as physically weak as their cause is mentally.

I wouldn't trust them watching my six as much as a six pack. First ones to stab you in the back.

And the GOP could portray Obama as the "Robbin' Hood."

First off I would like to congratulate my fellow citizens for being so generous and so smart as to make this investment. Of course this company will not create any more shares out their ass.

Item 3.03 Material Modification of the Rights of Security Holders.
On October 28, 2008, The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. (the “Company”) issued and sold, and the United States Department of the Treasury (the “U.S. Treasury”) purchased, (1) 10,000,000 shares (the “Preferred Shares”) of the Company’s Fixed Rate Cumulative Perpetual Preferred Stock, Series H, liquidation preference of $1,000 per share, and (2) a ten-year warrant (the “Warrant”) to purchase up to 12,205,045 shares of the Company’s voting common stock, par value $0.01 per share (“Common Stock”), at an exercise price of $122.90 per share, for an aggregate purchase price of $10.0 billion in cash. Cumulative dividends on the Preferred Shares will accrue on the liquidation preference at a rate of 5% per annum for the first five years, and at a rate of 9% per annum thereafter. The securities were sold in a private placement exempt from registration pursuant to Section 4(2) of the Securities Act of 1933.
The securities purchase agreement, dated October 26, 2008 (the “Purchase Agreement”), between the Company and the U.S. Treasury, pursuant to which the Preferred Shares and the Warrant were sold, limits the payment of dividends on the Common Stock to the current quarterly cash dividend of $0.35 per share, and limits the Company’s ability to repurchase its Common Stock or its outstanding preferred stock.
The Purchase Agreement, the Warrant and the Certificate of Designations relating to the Preferred Shares are exhibits to this Report on
Form 8-K. The foregoing summary of certain provisions of these documents is qualified in its entirety by reference thereto.
Item 5.03 Amendments to Articles of Incorporation or Bylaws; Change in Fiscal Year.
On October 27, 2008, the Company filed with the Secretary of State of the State of Delaware a Certificate of Designations to its Restated Certificate of Incorporation establishing the terms of the Preferred Shares. This Certificate of Designations is an exhibit to this Report on Form 8-K and is incorporated by reference into this Item 5.03.

Next step: Call The One on this statement, and directly ask him why he lied during the campaign. Establish the fact that he's a liar in the public mind early, and reinforce it at every opportunity. It will help build opposition to any shenanigans he tries to pull, like raiding 401k accounts or expanding entitlements, if no one feels he can be trusted.

It has the advantage of being the truth, as well.

I am already hearing grumblings at work from folks saying they will take their money out now and pay a huge tax penalty instead of it all getting eaten up over 10-15 years by taxes. People are getting scared and pi$$ed.

As tempting as this may be, the downsides to such a raid are enormous. Politically, of course, you will wind up alienating pretty much the entire middle class, and a good chunk of everyone else higher up on the earnings chain.

To make matters worse, you'll see a sudden, massive disinvestment in the stock market as the tax-deferred benefit of regular investment loses it's attraction. The stock market will plummet, wiping out savings - and destroying the very asset that the government had been hoping to tax in the first place.

And the failure of 401k investments will place enormous pressure on the government to come up with a replacement for the just-ruined retirement funding the middle class had been counting on. If you think the current credit and banking crisis is bad, just wait: the total obligations of the US government to those people who will enter the Social Security system over the next 15 years - the bulk of the Baby Boomers - will top $73 trillion dollars.

That's correct. $73 trillion. With a 'T'.

There is no plan to fix this - Congress scotched attempts to address this looming catastrophe for the most venal of partisan reasons when Bush tried to open a dialog on it a couple of years ago, and now no one wants to talk about it at all. And destroying 401k accounts for immediate plundering, instead of simply waiting for the long-term tax windfall these accounts represent in their current form, will only increase demand for government assistance toward retirement, an impossible demand.

I'm certain the Dems are drooling over this opportunity, but any rational analysis shows that it would be a disaster, both long and short term. Politicians generally don't care much about long-term disasters, but the fallout from this could wipe out political careers almost overnight, beginning with the 2010 midterms if the idea even begins to gain traction before then. It will be very, very difficult to ram any change in 401k status through, and there will be massive bloodletting if an attempt is made, even if it is unsuccessful.

re: #415 Iron Fist

Absolutely. The same thing is true of the gun control issue. I'm afraid that Obama is going to see it as a safe bone to throw his base. He couldn't be more wrong. Gun control was a critical factor in the '94 election, at least where I could see it. Sasser went down because of the issue. He had been considered a safe seat for the Democrats.

The problem is that the Republican's didn't do anything to retain this part of the base. Oh, the House passed a repeal of the "Assault weapons" ban, but the Senate let it die without comment (and the House only acted when a group of Democrats told them essientaly told the Republicans that they were going to introduce it without Republican aid if necessary). They didn't try to pass any more laws, but "hey, at least we didn't ass rape you" isn't exactly the kind of thing that keeps you coming back election after election.

In 2006 there were a number of pro-Second Amendment Democrats. Even our Democrat Governor was vocally pro-gun. It is something that allows some hope on the National front. Maybe the Democrats will not do anything for fear of the reprocussions.

The country has been drifting rightward for decades now; the Democrats are simply co-opting a strategy that works. They're becoming more Conservative than the Republicans.

This will make for an interesting couple of years at least, as the freshman from the last couple elections butt heads with the senior party leadership. I don't think they see eye-to-eye on a lot of hard-core liberal issues.

Obama is also giving signs of flushing the extreme Leftist kooks that supported him. Why shouldn't he? They're an embarrassment to him when he's trying to work with the much larger, moderate middle of the electorate; and they're not going anywhere else, anyway. It's not like Medea Benjamin is going to vote for Mitt Romney. Gun control is an awfully big bone to throw to an awfully small voting bloc, especially when it's held up against the size of the bloc any such move is going to not only piss off, but mobilize.
