The Anti-Museum

Science | Thu, Nov 13, 2008 at 6:40:51 pm PST

Here’s a highly entertaining account of a trip to the Creation Museum in Kentucky, by Daniel Phelps, president of the Kentucky Paleontological Society: The Anti-Museum.

Well, it would be highly entertaining if it weren’t so very sad.

The Dragon Theater features a short video on dinosaurs that absurdly argues they were in the Bible and were around until at least Medieval times where they were called dragons. Much of the narration is done by the same actor that played the paleontologist in the “Last Adam” video and whose likeness was used at the “Dinosaur Dig Site.” Most of the film is taken up by a cheesy retelling of the legend of St. George and the Dragon. Widespread dragon legends in other cultures are also mentioned. According to artwork in the film, children in ancient Japan even had pet Stegosaurs. Creationist paleontologist Kurt Wise (a Harvard Graduate, who now works for the Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville, KY) tells the audience that Behemoth and Leviathan from the book of Job are likely to be dinosaurs. Wise also claims that dinosaur extinction was likely due to post-Flood climate change and the sudden rarity of certain gymnosperm plants that dinosaurs munched on before the Flood. This video is certainly the low point of Dr. Wise’s career.

Yea, and the foot and a half, 3 inch thick dino bone I have fossilized sometime after the flood, oh about 600 years ago.

Oh, and the 20-30 pounds of meteorites in my collection, which are made up of chondrules composed of the stardust that revolved around the proto-sun, they formed just a few eons ago.

Ah, and the...

A native of Australia, Ken Ham arrived in Northern Kentucky in 1994. Previously, he had worked for the Institute for Creation Research (ICR) near San Diego, California. During his stint at the Institute for Creation Research, Reverend Ham developed a reputation for being a firebrand for the creationist movement. For example, his most popular book The Lie: Evolution is intended for adult readers, but features cartoons of "evolutionists" dressed as pirates with cannons shooting up a castle labeled "Christianity" (as Dave Barry says, "I'm not making this up!"). While at the ICR Reverend Ham was one of the ministry's most in-demand speakers; often putting a strong social commentary in his anti-evolution sermons. According to Ham, almost every ill of modern society can be traced to the widespread acceptance of evolution.

Where have I heard that bit before... oh ya, at the Discovery Institute.

When close relatives marry today, there is an increased likelihood of deformities in the offspring because of the mutations (mistakes) that have accumulated in the human race since Adam's sin. The closer the relatives, the more likelihood that such people will have similar mistakes. If these mutations are inherited in offspring from both parents, then there is an increased probability of major physiological problems.

So 'sinning' is what causes deformities?

That is crazy talk.

In front of the ticket booth is a very nice composite wooly Rhino fossil from Siberia on loan to AIG from two of its supporters. I thought this was merely a cast when I first saw the skeleton, because only a thin strip of cloth blocked it off. Definition of a Christian; A person who, having accepted they are separated from God by Sin, ie the fallen human nature, see their need for a Saviour and turn to Christ, who suffered and died on a Cross as a once and perfect sacrifice for their sin (nature, not deeds), and in so doing, receive His Righteousness as an imputed free gift.

Definition of a Creationist; A person who calls themself a Christian but insists that if one cannot and will not accept in the literal 6 days of creation of the earth and all that encompasses, ie young earth theology, you CANNOT be a Christian.....like them.

"Judge not that ye be not judged" doesn't apply to them. Similar to science, they pick and choose from the Bible as to what applies as much as they pick and choose from the science what makes sense to them.

How can it be doubted? There are indeed dragons. For instance, I'm dragon my ass tonight, and cannot come up with decent puns.

But the Dragon Museum is an ass of a different color. Teaching this stuff is wrong. It's like telling children who are permanently unable to penetrate the deception that Santa Claus is really truly real. Educated people should not spin a web of lies to make fools of gullible people who trust them.

Evolution or not, fire breathing, flying dragons are just flat impossible in the natural world. As to sudden rarity of gymnosperm plants, well, the ceratopsians were grass eaters. Was there a sudden shortage of grass?

The Dragon museum is aiding and abetting pterarism.

So I've been told. We were way up in the North Atlantic, icebergs and such, 40-50 knot winds, 20-30 foot seas and trying to do a missle shoot for one of our subs. Had about 6 guys capable of working. Mass hysteria, and great fun.

Soup's on!

We have a boil once a year. All-day affair.

I was part of the "host committee" for a multi-state conference being held here in La. one year.

We thought we'd give everyone a real taste of Louisiana, a real treat, and have a really big crawfish boil.

Nobody from out of state liked 'em, OR they thought the crawfish were just an appetizer, ate 2 or 3. Who eats 2 or 3 crawfish? I think you're supposed to have 5 pounds for each person. We had a ton of boiled crawfish left over. Peeled 'em all, froze 'em, and the "host committee" had a great etouffee dinner one night.

The creation museum is what the creation museum is, but you know what, they built it all with private money & it sustains itself with its own revenue & ZERO help from government finance. They don't force people to go there & it is off the beaten path.

As far as I am concerned they can say that man was created when humans flew out of monkey's butts & that the Flintstones was a true story. It is their opinion & they are allowed to have it.

I don't see what they say as being any worse than the creative, and just plain untrue, reporting done by most of the media in this country every single day. Or than the politically biased text books that quietly rewrite history that our children are FORCED to learn at taxpayer expense in the public school systems all across this country. Or than the activist professors who spew their hate to our kids at state universities and receive huge funds from government grants to do it.

No, I don't really have a problem with the creation museum using a bit of revisionist history to tell their story when compared to these other institutions.

In some places - you're right! Wiki:

In North America prior to the 20th century, local lobster was not a popular food. In the Canadian Maritimes, eating lobster was considered a mark of poverty or as a food for slaves or lower members of society. Lobsters were also used as a fertilizer for farms.[citation needed] Outside of the rural outports lobster was sold canned.

I didn't laugh until later, after the mess was cleaned up. Poor guys, never been seasick and I'm told you think you're gonna die.

We had a guy that would report on board our MSO - come up the gangplank - drop his duffle bag - walk straight across the deck and puke over the far rail. And then would die for 3-4 days in his rack after we got underway.

He put in for carrier duty many times - refused.

I don't know WTH he was doing in the Navy.

There were only 5 of us out of 65 that never got seasick - thank goodness - because we had to run the ship for a week during a storm in the Med back in the 60s.

I worry about the texting because you miss the nuances of speaking face-to-face with someone, or even hearing their voice on the phone. Inflections, whether something is said straight or sarcastically - all sorts of things can be communicated verbally but not in text.

But, all in all - I think they'll grow up OK. Different methods, but they're doing the same things we did.

Very realistic advice. Too many people get to hooked on the process, and miss what's important. It took me four times to realize that.

It doesn't happen anymore. At 55, I've had some of the healthiest relationships I have ever had, because I look for the good, not the perfect. I look for what is working, not what is broken. I see myself for what I am, not what someone else wants me to be. It's all based on respect, for oneself and another.

"I ate his liver, dipped in butter, with fava beans and a nice chianti."

-H. Lecter

(btw, I disagree, I can definitely distinguish lobster from scallops, even dipped in butter)

Tomalley (lobster liver) is supposed to be a delicacy.

It's green when cooked. The only green food I want to put in my mouth is something like broccoli. Green seafood just don't cut it.

Besides which, it's poisonous.

uly 28, 2008 -- The FDA today warned consumers to avoid eating tomalley in American lobster (also called Maine lobster) because of a potential contamination of dangerous levels of toxins that can cause paralytic shellfish poisoning, which can be fatal.

The warning only applies to tomalley, the soft, green substance found in the lobster body cavity that functions as the liver and pancreas.

Now, don't that just make your mouth water?

I eat octopus at a local sushi place. The last time I was there, I ordered it at the bar, the chef reaches in to a tank, pulls out this huge monster, it crawls up his arm and I swear, it made a move for the knife. To no avail. Off came the head.

Juxtapose this museum exhibit with the Dragon/Mythological Monster special exhibit at the Boston Museum of science which I visited last weekend.

They put forth the assertion in numerous exhibits that fossils discovered by ancient peoples are likely the source of many a mythological monster. Mammoth skulls have a similarity to Cyclops, bones of dinosaur species could easily be interpreted as griffins or dragons.

Wait until you visit Sicily and make the mistake of ordering Fruita de Mare (translation fruit of the sea), assuming that its a salad with kelp and see portions of tentacles. Yowza... I was a foot-messenger in Boston for quite a few years. Developed the accent and all. It's (wicked) hard not to. Museum of Science is a must-see. Been there many times myself. They have the world's largest (I think) Van deGraff generator, and a sweet lightning exhibit. I wonder if they still do the Pink Floyd laser show at the planetarium?

I haven't been back for 10 years or so, but I'd love to go visit. I knew those streets like the back of my hand. Used to bring my git-fiddle into this big stone gazebo behind the Rowe's Wharf Hotel when nobody was around. You could whistle five notes in succession in there, and hear a chord for a minute or two. Downtown to the Back Bay, quite a beautiful city.

Back in the 60s - the divers on our boat - MSO 495 - with a temp home port of Charlotte Amalie (MinDiv 43Ville) would collect longusters and give them to the cook - who froze them. When we had over 150 - we had a beach party for the crew. Longuster (lobsters w/o claws) and beer - yes!

My dad became an avid scuba diver when we lived in Gitmo ('76-'78) and langustas (the Spanish spelling) were a favorite treat!

These critters (there are quite a number of related species, all in the family Palinuridae) also go by the names "spiny lobster" and rock lobster.

The "true lobsters," with the big-ass front claws, are in a separate family, Nephropidae.

When I was stationed in Japan, some Marines decided to take me out to a Sushi bar one night (about a month after I arrived), they ordered Sushi and Hubu Saki (its a rice wine with a dead snake in the bottom of the bottle).

Never heard of the drink, but it's almost certainly "Habu," not "Hubu."

Habu is the Japanese name for several species of venomous snake found in the Ryukyu islands of southern Japan, including Okinawa. It's also a nickname for the SR-71 Blackbird.

When we lived in Okinawa, we would occasionally discover small, deceased specimens of habu outside the front door -- courtesy of our cats, Smokey and Miss Patches.

Something they did in the late '70s to jerk the Communist chain: An SR-71 flew from its base in England to the Arctic.

It then commenced a speed run down the East-West border, turned around over Austria, and made another speed run back to the north.

IIRC the Czechs were the only ones who even got a look at the thing. The Soviets and East Germans were caught flat-footed.

An A-12? Huh, the plaque next to it said SR-71 Blackbird - I was there when they put that ID Plaque next to it.

When I was there about 2 years ago, it was clearly an A-12
And that's what they say on the web site

Initially flown in 1962, Blackbirds performed sensitive reconnaissance missions while flying at speeds over Mach 3. The aircraft was the creation of Lockheed’s famous “Skunk Works” division, headed by Clarence “Kelly” Johnson. Single-seat Blackbirds flew at altitudes up to 100,000 feet (30,480 meters). Its top recorded speed was 2,269 mph (3,651 kph). Fewer than 50 were built. The early A-12s were used for CIA surveillance missions until 1968. Later YF-12s and SR-71s served through the 1990s in reconnaissance and test missions for the Air Force and NASA.
This A-12 was the first production unit. It served as a radar-test example early in 1962 at the secret base Area 51.

Wow, you were on one of the old mine sweeps... good lord... I served on MHC 51 (one of the Osprey classes) down in Ingleside. Talk about an emesis boat, I used to walk around with a plastic bag in my belt when we were underway.

Now, see, all my fellow American citizens who voted for Barack Obama or refused to vote for John McCain, had you exercised just a little bit more judgment, we would now, perhaps, have a crusty old naval aviator who endured five years of imprisonment and torture in a Communist P.O.W. camp facing off against the bad nasty KGB man.

Gorelick was vital in covering up Clinton admin missteps pre 9/11 and is up to her neck in the Fannie Mae debacle...she wouldn't ever investigate anything to do with those, and other sorry Clintonian episodes.

The thing is, the Bush DOJ didn't lift a finger against Sandy Berger or anybody connected with Fannie/Freddy either. Maybe the Clintons were worried that a McCain DOJ wouldn't treat past criminality with kid gloves?

I guess the Gorelick appointment along with Hillary as Sec State (?) could have been enough to get Bill out the door.

I'm coming in late to the discussion, but here is the text in Job 41 that describes Leviathan. You have to admit it does sound a bit like a huge reptile that breathes fire.
I will not conceal his parts, nor his power, nor his comely proportion.

13Who can discover the face of his garment? or who can come to him with his double bridle?
14Who can open the doors of his face? his teeth are terrible round about. 15His scales are his pride, shut up together as with a close seal.
16One is so near to another, that no air can come between them.
17They are joined one to another, they stick together, that they cannot be sundered. 18By his neesings a light doth shine, and his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning. 19Out of his mouth go burning lamps, and sparks of fire leap out. 20Out of his nostrils goeth smoke, as out of a seething pot or caldron. 21His breath kindleth coals, and a flame goeth out of his mouth. 22In his neck remaineth strength, and sorrow is turned into joy before him. 23The flakes of his flesh are joined together: they are firm in themselves; they cannot be moved.
24His heart is as firm as a stone; yea, as hard as a piece of the nether millstone. 25When he raiseth up himself, the mighty are afraid: by reason of breakings they purify themselves. 26The sword of him that layeth at him cannot hold: the spear, the dart, nor the habergeon.
27He esteemeth iron as straw, and brass as rotten wood.
28The arrow cannot make him flee: slingstones are turned with him into stubble. 29Darts are counted as stubble: he laugheth at the shaking of a spear. 30Sharp stones are under him: he spreadeth sharp pointed things upon the mire. 31He maketh the deep to boil like a pot: he maketh the sea like a pot of ointment. 32He maketh a path to shine after him; one would think the deep to be hoary. 33Upon earth there is not his like, who is made without fear.

re: #692 So?

Well, there is also the theory that other intelligent life seeded Earth. Also very plausible.

It is difficult to tell but I have listened to religious people talk, and according to them the Bible is not inconsistent with Science. I have given them an ear, and it is interesting.

Here is the argument: Time lines of millions or billions of years were not useful to people in Biblical times because they were scientifically unsophisticated. So they said thousands of years or many generations... an ambiguous time to mean a long period.

They advised me that the Bible said that before creation God said "Let there be light." Scientist suggests that in the beginning there was a massive expansion involving the release of energy. Well they would not be able to articulate the "Big bang" theory, so the best they could do was let there be light... to explain the release of energy.

According to Scriptures... the Earth was without form, and void... well according to science, in the beginning, the earth was a glowing ball of hot gas (about 5 billion years ago), a glowing ball of hot gasses is by any definition without form and void.

Well according to the Bible, the earliest organisms were found in the sea, the scientifically illiterate people who wrote the Bible would not have been able to explain single celled organisms that were motile or other simple marine organisms, what they understood was that sea creatures were fish and other such complex organisms. Well so they say that God created the fish.

Well the Bible says land animals came next... according to evolutionary theory, land animals evolved from sea creatures.

Then according to the Bible came birds of the air... well science tells us that birds are probably (most likely) evolved from flying dinosaurs.

Man according to Genesis was God's last significant creation. Well on a clock of earths existence... man came on the scene within a few minutes to 12.

Then Cain slew his brother Abel... Well they suggest that Homo Sapien may have existed with other hominids for a while and through competition destroyed the related species in the hominids. More and more scientists are coming to that view.

Now I know that this explanation wont satisfy many people, but I forced myself to be open minded when I listened to what they had to say... and it may be that they are on to something, or they might just be cherry picking the Bible. It was an interesting discussion though.

Behemoth and Leviathan are mentioned exactly four times in the Bible.

Job 40:15 Behold now behemoth, which I made with thee; he eateth grass as an ox
Job 41:1 Canst thou draw out leviathan with an hook? or his tongue with a cord which thou lettest down?
Psa 74:14 Thou brakest the heads of leviathan in pieces, and gavest him to be meat to the people inhabiting the wilderness.
Psa 104:26 There go the ships: there is that leviathan, whom thou hast made to play therein.
Isa 27:1 In that day the LORD with his sore and great and strong sword shall punish leviathan the piercing serpent, even leviathan that crooked serpent; and he shall slay the dragon that is in the sea.

It strains my intellect to fathom how anyone can believe that humans and dinosaurs existed at the same time.
The scientific evidence demonstrates that the dinosaurs did not exist past the K-T boundary (about 70 million years old).
The oldest human fossils are about 3 - 4 million years old (Lucy). There is a period of about 65 million years that separate humans from dinosaurs. What is wrong with these people?
But then as my 10 year old puts it (not her words). Good lord... T Rex or any other carnivorous dinosaur would have eaten every human... how would they defend themselves against animals as big as buses with teeth over a foot long.

Whether Leviathan was a Dinosaur or not is irrelevant to me. When it comes down to it, no one could ever understand God's mind. If he were ever to explain to us how life began, our brains would melt from overload. We can tell ourselves that man came from dirt or from a single cell organism, but both versions are likely infinitely more simple than what actually happened.

Salamantis's objection is exactly right, in my opinion.

Now, suppose that in the distant future, Earthlings finally travel to other star systems, and happen to discover an Earth-like planet that's not only biochemically suitable for humans (yet conveniently free of human-like intelligence) but is also teeming with a huge diversity of life, as today's Earth is.

But subsequent geological exploration turns up something very strange: the planet is confirmed to be less than 1.5 billion years old and has been cool enough for oceans of liquid water for only a few hundred million years. Moreover, geologic samples taken from locations all over the planet reveal a rich fossil record -- but a record that seems to suggest the abrupt appearance of lifeforms ranging from bacteria to terrestrial vertebrates and flowering plants about 90 million years in the past, with a total absence of fossils prior to that.

Now, in THAT scenario, we might be quite justified in "kicking the evolutionary can down the road" and hypothesizing that the young planet may have been artificially seeded with life 90 million years before, by an advanced spacefaring civilization that had evolved elsewhere.

But in the case of our Earth, there appears to be no necessity to speculate about ancient extra-terrestrial visitors planting a Garden of Eden on a previously lifeless planet.

And would "creation science" in school curricula be any more absurd than some of the left-wing junk science (and junk history) that they are already teaching in public schools? If we are expecting them to teach only the truth and no propaganda, I'm afraid that ship sailed a long time ago.

754 A Reasonable Man  Fri, Nov 14, 2008 8:02:23am

Evolution tells us that our earliest mammalian ancestors were alive at the time of the dinosaurs. It strikes me as reasonable to assume that a natural fear/aversion/awe of large lizards was implanted at that time and remained through the human portion of our evolution. It is fascinating that dragons have been such a frequent subject of human myth and folklore, and it's hard to explain any other way.

It was about States' Rights in the border states. Virginia, most famously, only quit when the Union called up the troops.

But nowadays we hear that argument most loudly from places like Mississippi, which left because, duh, the anti-slavery candidate won. There was nothing in Lincoln's platform which mentioned interference in Mississippi's affairs. I much prefer honest racists to the hypocrites in the Confederacy-apologetic movement.

754, dragons started out as snakes, not lizards (or birds, the dinos of today). The "dragon" in Revelations is supposed to bring to mind the serpent of Genesis; the Asian dragons are all long-bodied; even the Mexicans have a winged serpent (Quetzalcoatl).

Our ancestors didn't care about harmless lizards. They did care about poisonous snakes.

I went to a Christian summer camp in Arkansas, twice, first at 12 and then 13. My second visit, they attempted to browbeat me into believing that evolution was a lie and that Noah's Ark had been found. To that last they claimed that they had seen this on PBS's show "Nova", with complete archaeological evidence and such. I was branded a non-Christian and questions were raised as to what I was doing in a Christian camp.

I was wholly opposed to the whole of Christianity as a result from the ages of 13 to about 20. And then it didn't "take" too well because after about six months I'd run afoul of what we might call "neo-fundamentalists" - the Campus Crusade for Christ preaching out of Josh MacDowell's books.

The most damage fundamentalists inflict, they inflict on Christians.

Um, while slavery was a major factor, the Civil War WAS largely about states' rights. . . even the dispute over slavery boiled down to (in the eyes of the Confederate states) meddling by the Federal government in their ability to conduct trade as they saw fit.

Oh my! It's too bad this thread is dead. It's a long review and taking me some time to get through while trying to attend to other things. But this part is just too funny!

Unfortunately, I didn't pay too much attention to the short video on the creation of Adam. It was revealed about a week after our visit that the actor who played Adam is an individual named Eric Linden. Apparently, Mr. Linden is a more talented performer than the Creation of Adam film gave him credit for. His other performances include a website named [I'm trying to omit the link...]www.bedroomacrobat.com. AIG was scandalized by this development and yanked the short video. Oddly, nothing has appeared on the AIG website about the incident. I thought they were proponents of the rule of all publicity is good publicity. I guess there is a naughty bits exception to this concept.

Minority report: I personally believe Job 41 -- permitted to speak for itself -- does describe a dinosaur.

Job lived perhaps some two thousand years B.C. (that means "Before Christ," which is terribly impolitic of me, I know!).

Uh, the implied answer is: "No, there is NO WAY I, Job, can draw out Leviathan with a hook. He is too awesome and fearsome." The other implied point is that: "For God it is a small thing to draw out leviathan with a hook."

Where's your physical evidence? The newest dino bones that have been found date back to 65 million years ago, when an asteroid struck around the Gulf of Mexico and wiped the dino population off the face of the planet. And Homo Sapiens hasn't been around more than a quarter million years (before then, there were other hominid species around, such as Neanderthals and Homo Erectus - and they were not around for more than a million years themselves; before them were Australopithecus Afarensus and Boisei and Robustus and so on). So you obviously have an unexplained 64 3/4 million year gap between the end of the dinos and the emergence of the first true (like us) humans.

Ok, except no one actually knows when Job lived. Or if he lived. So even if God did talk to him about dinosaurs (but it could as easily have been any number of actually real fearsome creatures that could be romanticized into the descriptions found in the book of Iov), the whole story could be an allegory (which a lot of scholars believe it to be) or God could have been talking about mythical creatures commonly used to scare kids around campfires or creatures that had been extinct for a few hundred million years (which to God would be only the blink of an eye) in order to make a point. The fact is, you just don't know.

"Substantive arguments?" Against the view that dinosaurs lived at the same time as human beings?

Well, yes, but only secondarily. Primarily, I was asking for any substantive arguments -- ideally based on sound exegesis of the original Hebrew -- debunking my take on the sense of the text of Job 41: Namely, that it describes a dinosaur.

If, however, my understanding of Job 41 is correct, then, yes, I will ask for substantive arguments as to why dinosaurs COULD not have lived as recently as 5000 years ago.

P.S. Arguments like "one million" scientists assert that is impossible mean as little to me as "one million" scientists assert that the sky is falling due to global warming. (Too many 'scientists' today, I fear, are little more than grant-writing whores.)

Empirical evidence of the dinosaur extiction event 65 million years ago:

[Link: en.wikipedia.org...]

But of course either all the scientists who discovered and evaluated this evidence are 'grant writing whores', or else a lying god actually placed the dispersed and precipitated iridium signature from the collision in 65 million year old strata for thousands of miles around the impact crater in order to falsify his own testament, so that believers would be forced to rely on faith alone, in opposition to all empirical evidence (snort!).
