It was a great game. And Belecheck not kicking that field goal on fourth down from the 24 yard line in the third quarter came back to bite him in the butt. Terrible call there.

Probably the Jets right now, because they're playing so well. The Habs are a good team, but Buffalo and the B's are the class of that division.

I heard Womanizer for the first time earlier today. It bugged me immediately because it sounded familiar, but I couldn't place it. Every so often through the day, I'd hum the section that sounded familiar without the words.
While making dinner tonight, I found myself singing, "In the middle of the summer, in the middle of a park . . . " and it hit me it was Lidsville! I ran to YouTube (yes, dinner was saved anyway), searched for Lidsville, and there it was!

My uncle works at a music store in western mass....apparently one of the perks (prior to the advent of MP3s) was he could get a good deal on imported CDs.
One afternoon he was listening to some random Hindi pop CD and thought 'Hey...this sounds familiar'. It was 'borrowed' (to use a generous term) by the Black Eyed Peas for one of their songs...he never specified which one. He initially thought it was the other way around until he saw that the Hindi-pop song was from 1996 or thereabouts...

#27: Wyatt Earp
Girls or boys, take what comes, love them and let them know it.
I'm an old guy, veteran, disabled, but still enjoying life to the fullest. My plumbing doesn't work anymore the way it should, not like a young guy, but when it did I fathered one son, three daughters, and two stillborn. My wife still grieves the ones we lost, although it happened over fifty years ago. The son is a fine man, but he does his thing, he is a professional, and about all we see of him, mostly a function of location, is regular phone calls and a visit every year or two.
Our daughters too are professionals, but they cling to family, and we see them at least weekly.
We have grandchildren as well, four girls and four boys, all fine individuals.
It is my opinion that girls are more needful of tight family relationships. I would like to have had more boys, I guess to propagate the proud family name. That is certainly selfish of me, but I suspect many men feel that way. No matter, I have three grandsons who will do that, also two nephews.
To me, family is what life is all about. How lonely and uninteresting my life would be were there none.
Old Engineer

Honestly, I don't even credit wealthy liberals with being stupid. I think wealthy liberals they are greedy and cynical; greedy because they would never give that money to someone in true need and cynical because they think less wealthy liberals wouldn't give unless the government forces them too. Wealthy conservatives on the other hand would prefer to give directly to the needy and believe correctly that less wealthy conservatives will give to the needy without government coercion.

I have never seen this before laughed my ass off. Enjoy
Dear Diary...
December 8 - 6:00 PM. It started to snow. The first snow of the season and the wife and I took our cocktails and sat for hours by the window watching the huge soft flakes drift down from heaven. It looked like a Grandma Moses Print. So romantic we felt like newlyweds again. I love snow!
December 9 - We woke to a beautiful blanket of crystal white snow covering every inch of the landscape. What a fantastic sight! Can there be a more lovely place in the Whole World? Moving here was the best idea I've ever had. Shoveled for the first time in years and felt like a boy again. I did both our driveway and the sidewalks. This afternoon the snowplow came along and covered up the sidewalks and closed in the driveway, so I got to shovel again. What a perfect life.
December 12 - The sun has melted all our lovely snow. Such a disappointment. My neighbor tells me not to worry, we'll definitely have a white Christmas. No snow on Christmas would be awful! Bob says we'll have so much snow by the end of winter, that I'll never want to see snow again. l don't think that's possible. Bob is such a nice man, I'm glad he's our neighbor.
December 14 - Snow lovely snow! 8" last night. The temperature dropped to -20. The cold makes everything sparkle so. The wind took my breath away, but I warmed up by shoveling the driveway and sidewalks. This is the life! The snowplow came back this afternoon and buried everything again. I didn't realize I would have to do quite this much shoveling, but I'll certainly get back in shape this way. I wish l wouldn't huff and puff so.
December 15 - 20 inches forecast. Sold my van and bought a 4x4 Blazer. Bought snow tires for the wife's car and 2 extra shovels. Stocked the freezer. The wife wants a wood stove in case the electricity goes out. I think that's silly. We aren't in Alaska, after all.
December 16 - Ice storm this morning. Fell on my ass on the ice in the driveway putting down salt. Hurt like hell. The wife laughed for an hour, Which I think was very cruel.
December 17 - Still way below freezing. Roads are too icy to go anywhere. Electricity was off for 5 hours. I had to pile the blankets on to stay warm. Nothing to do but stare at the wife and try not to irritate her. Guess I should've bought a wood stove, but won't admit it to her. God I hate it when she's right. I can't believe I'm freezing to death in my own living room.
December 20 - Electricity's back on, but had another 14" of the damn stuff last night. More shoveling. Took all day. Goddamn snowplow came by twice. Tried to find a neighbor kid to shovel, but they said they're too busy playing hockey. I think they're lying. Called the only hardware store around to see about buying a snow
blower and they're out. Might have another shipment in March. I think they're lying. Bob says I have to shovel or the city will have it done and bill me. I think he's lying.
December 22 - Bob was right about a white Christmas because 13 more inches of the white sh#t fell today, and it's so cold it probably won't melt till August. Took me 45 minutes to get all dressed up to go out to shovel and then I had to pee. By the time I got undressed, peed and dressed again. I was too tired to shovel. Tried to hire Bob who has a plow on his truck for the rest of the winter; but he says he's too busy. I think the bugger is lying.
December 23 - Only 2" of snow today. And it warmed up to 0. The wife wanted me to decorate the front of the house this morning. What is she nuts! Why didn't she tell me to do that a month ago? She says she did but I think she's lying.
cont..

December 24 - 6". Snow packed so hard by snowplow, l broke the shovel. Thought I was having a heart attack. If I ever catch the s.o.b who drives that snow plow I'll drag him through the snow by his ankles and beat him to death with my broken shovel. I know he hides around the corner and waits for me to finish
shoveling and then he comes down the street at a 100 miles an hour and throws snow all over where I've just been! Tonight the wife wanted me to sing Christmas carols with her and open our presents, but I was too busy watching for the damn snowplow.
December 25 - Merry frigging Christmas! 20 more inches of the damn slop tonight. Snowed in. The idea of shoveling makes my blood boil. God I hate the snow! Then the snowplow driver came by asking for a donation and I hit him over the head with my shovel. The wife says I have a bad attitude. I think shes a fricking idiot. If I have to watch "It's A Wondeful Life" one more time, I'm going to stuff her into the microwave.
December 26 - Still snowed in. Why the hell did I ever move here? It was all HER idea. She's really getting on my nerves.
December 27 - Temperature dropped to -30 and the pipes froze, plumber came after 14 hours of waiting for him, he only charged me 1,400 to replace all my pipes.
December 28 - Warmed up to above -20. Still snowed in. THE BITCH is driving me crazy!
December 29 - 10 more inches. Bob says I have to shovel the roof or it could cave in. That's the silliest thing I ever heard. How dumb does he think I am?
December 30 - Roof caved in. I beat up the snow plow driver and he is now suing me for a million dollars not only the beating I gave him but also for trying to shove the broken snow shovel up his ass. The wife went home to her mother. 9" predicted.
December 31 - I set fire to what's left of the house. No more shoveling.
January 8 - Feel so good. I just love those little white pills they keep giving me. Why am I tied to the bed?

What strange weather I've been having in Sydney. Just today it was 95F followed by a severe thunderstorm - electricity was out 30 minutes. And now it's freezing cold outside. Expecting snow on the weekend on the "higher" peaks.
Usually the really hot weather doesn't kick in until after Christmas and it's 2 - 2 1/2 months of tropical weather (with the chance of a few cooler days interspersed).

Election over, BBC re-initiates two-minute hate against Israel
As Charles mentioned yesterday, now that the election is over and Obama is safely elected, the Pali war is heating up again. At the behest of Hamas, the press is kick starting the usual biased memes to re-groove the public mind back into the rote about Israel and her enemies, in case our brains got a little rusty during the election campaign when we weren't allowed to think about such distractions as the jihad.
The BBC is among the first to re-establish the correct line of thinking about who the heroes and villains are. In their effort today, note how they place Israel's response as a separate issue to the original Pali rocket attack which brought about Israel's response:
[Link: news.bbc.co.uk...]
Gaza air strikes and rocket fire
Israeli aircraft have fired missiles at targets in the northern Gaza Strip, injuring two Palestinian militants.Militants fired rockets into Israel on Friday.
No, that is not a second day lead. It is a biased interpretation.
The UN is of course playing ball right along with the media to get the game going again. Here the UN executes a well-timed forward pass to the BBC that eliminates no doubt about who we are to single out for public and political displeasure.
'Disaster'
John Ging, of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (Unrwa), said on Thursday that handouts for 750,000 Gazans would have to be suspended until Saturday at the earliest, and called Gaza's economic situation "a disaster".
Now that the MSM has done it's superlative job presenting in-depth coverage of President-elect Obama's background and record, someone has decided it is time for them to re-apply these same skills and standards to ME coverage again.
BBC does not note anywhere in its coverage -- ever! -- the odd coincidence that what they call the "five-month truce between the two sides", which was really Hamas' cessation of rocket attacks, just happened to coincide with the American election season to the liberal's advantage. We did here. McCain should have!

Woke up thinking about Bambi's plan for a civilian defense force and Rahm Emmanuel's' idea of a mandatory three month youth service. If Bambi is thinking along the lines of the CERT program, it isn't a bad idea but it doesn't need to be as well funded as the DoD. For one thing it's volunteers.
If they are serious about mandatory service then they are looking at the draft, with a choice of military or civilain service. How do you sell that to the typical 18 year old? Or her parents?

unclassifiable -- Gaza has Israel on two sides, Egypt on one, and the sea on the fourth. The map in the article shows that well. Israel may control or influence the Egyptian crossing. That's never really made clear in this article or anywhere. The Palis seem to be able to blow out the apartheid fence that pens them in from Egypt when they wish to.
The real issue is, and it is only mentioned way down in the article, that Israel closes it's crossings when the rocket attacks flare up. There were more than 35 rockets in the last week. To me, that seems the minimal response anybody would make.
There is no good reason why Gaza should be at war with Israel. It's not their country. Less than 5 percent of Gazans ever lived in Israel. If Gaza were interested in any wholesome development, they could turn that place into Miami Beach, with or without Jews.

Good Morning Lizards!
Too bad all bank robbers aren't this smart:
Bank robber threatens to file a complaint with management after finding empty cash drawers
YORK, Pa. (AP) _ Police say a central Pennsylvania man tried to rob a bank — but tellers' empty cash drawers thwarted his attempt. Springettsbury Township Police Lt. Scott Laird said the tellers were waiting for their cash drawers to be filled when a man entered a Susquehanna Bank branch Thursday morning and demanded money. The first teller fainted and the next two showed him their empty cash drawers.
Laird says the robber then threatened to file a complaint with bank management before leaving.
A customer at the drive-through called 911. A 48-year-old man was arrested about 10 blocks away and was held in the York County Prison in lieu of $25,000 bail. He was charged with criminal attempt to commit robbery.
I hope he goes through with his threat to file a complaint. I want to read the banks reply.

I feel silly ranting about the Israel Pali war. I feel like I'm playing the script the media is handing me. In cooperation with Hamas, and with the liberal movement in America, Israel Pali news was blanked out during the entire election season under cover of a so-called truce. Hamas could have just such a truce anytime they wish if they would just stop dropping their munitions on the heads of innocent Israeli townsfolk.
I'm off. Have a nice day.

Perfectly understandable retaliation by Israel. Restrained actually.
My point is that even if Israel could trust the Egyptian and the Gazans to conduct peaceful trade (they can't -- it's fantasy thinking) Egypt STILL will not provide investment (as well as Gaza's other Arab supporters) because they have always taken the attitude that the Gazan's are more useful as human bulldozers to push the Israelis out.
There are numerous article's on the Arab League's refusal to do anything other than insist on Israel's self-destruction and resettlement by the Gazan and West Bank Arabs.
There is no argument here from this quarter on Israel's actions.

It's so hard to yell at misbehaving students when I have a sore throat from a cold...
LOL. I once had teacher, Grade 4 or 5 IIRC, who used to whisper very loudly when she had a sore throat, sort of like a hissing noise.
It was amazing how quiet the class got.
We were all so startled and fascinated by this technique.

Look for the market to open sightly down today. The futures are pointing down slightly this morning. Also, the pattern has been for a sell off the day after a rally as the short sellers go back to hammering stocks again. I see no reason for them to not do that today.
In looking at the market, you have to understand that the dynamics have changed from what they were before.
To begin with, a lot of people who used to be buyers when the market was dropping are now gone. With all of the lay offs, Lehman Brothers closing, and so many people cashed out of the market and standing on the sidelines, there is very little buying pressure now when things are headed south. There are a whole lot fewer buyers to step in front of the train, so to speak.
Second, you have so much bad news out there that the short sellers are just hammering these stock prices. That's a big reason why you saw the market jump up yesterday about 900 points for the low point, once it turned you had all these short seller scrambling to close out their positions.
Congrats to Obama for the rise in the DOW yesterday. Now the market is only down about 1,100 points since he was elected.

Some Guinness was spilled on the barroom floor

Here in PA, we have what's known as a "closed shop" state. I took a job at a local grocery store a few years back, and as soon as I was hired they started taking union dues out of my $8.00 an hour paycheck.
I told them I wanted to strike for higher wages and they laughed at me.
I've since informed the union that since I no longer work there, they can remove me from their rolls.
I still get a statement six years later for my $7.00 worth of pension that I accrued.
The parking attendants here in Pittsburgh have a union, and I was even approached by a Food & Beverage local when I waited tables.
I guess my point is that it's just unspoken "reality" here and all through the rust belt that the union is your friend.

They just start talking about how evil Bush is or about how Obama is going to lower sea levels or anything else. But they do it in a very condescending tone that is completely looking down on any opposing view point which they assume is not me.

It is a tough spot. You hate to go The Pill route because it is like giving her permission, but on the other hand if you figure she will do it anyway then it avoids a terrible situation. God I am not looking forward to those years.
I know...it's a conundrum. Both of the girls know my views on sex outside of marriage, but that didn't stop me and thank God my parents were open with me and smart enough to make sure I knew the consequences. I'm doing the same with my girls, even though my youngest thinks it's gross when I talk about womens things.

3 wood Fri, Nov 14, 2008 4:47:26am |
I mentioned this yesterday, but I;ll repeat it here FWIW:
3 Wood's five step plan to prosperity
1. Open exchange desk for the mortgage backed securities. This will provide a clear, transparent, market based price on these securities so finally we can all know what these things are worth. I can get a price for any publicly traded stock, I should be able to get a price for these things too. I know this is in the works.
2. Cut capital gains tax and corporate earnings tax to zero for the foreseeable future. Capital would flood back into the market and corporations would start expanding, and employment would jump. Foreign capital would shift to the US and the dollar would jump in value as well.
3. Set up a payback schedule for every company that got a bail out to pay back every dime within 5 years. Every company that does not make that goal will have the senior management fired and replaced for 1 year. If they are not paid up current at thend of year 6, fire that management group and so forth.
4. No bail out for the auto makers. Let the 3 auto makers declare chapter 11 bankruptcy and restructure themselves. That would let them renegotiate their agreements, unload excess staff, fire the senior management that screwed this up, and come back leaner and competitive. The plant and equipment is there. Someone will use it.
5. Fire the head of the SEC Cox today and start putting handcuffs on the people who committed fraud in all this. There has to be an accountability brought back to the system.
By the way, the timing of the market surge yesterday was very closely aligned to when Moonbatr Dodd said that he doubted the Democrats had the votes to bail out the auto makers.

re: #355 NYCHardhat
My favourite artists are the Pink Floyd (RIP Richard) and it irks me to no end that Roger Waters, the guy that played the giant concert celebrating the fall of the Berlin Wall, bashes Bush and the US unapologetically in"Leaving Beirut" and supports Obama and the same type of socialism that eventually leads to big heavily guarded walls.
In an interview on the Making of The Dark Side DVD, Waters states that his philosophy is that we're all basically the same person that we were when we were two or three years old. I'm not sure if success at a young age reinforces this belief that no doubt leads to a liberal way of thinking, but it got me to thinking that many successful artists probably have absolutely no idea what work is, and wealth has always been there for them.
I'm seeing more and more Deadheads and jamband lovers coming over to our side though.
I'm more of a Dave Gilmour guy anyway.

I just wish that more people that find themselves in the spot that my neighbors are in would consider adoption. The child would definitely be better off, and I believe that the mother would be too. I know a couple of women who have done this and have gone on to live happy, fulfilled lives. On the other hand I know couple of women who went the abortion route and they are as screwed up as they can be. As for single motherhood, I think that for some that is fine and commendable (I am not talking about divorce situations here), but for a 14 year old girl it is just not in anyone's best interest.

Watch any MSM news broadcast for an hour, if you can stomach it. At some point it will degrade into a "I hate Bush" fest, where the commentators actually cheer each other on to say ever more nasty things.

Because she was a 'good girl' who wouldn't do that sort of thing. Her friends might, but she wouldn't. After all, that is what she told her mother during those 'open' discussions. I don't see any stats of either kind on their website. Presumably, though, if a pregnant girl or woman is uncertain about what course to take, they would discuss both adoption and abortion w. her. So one consultation would address both possibilities.

Actually, Planned Parenthood does provide adoption counseling and referrals to agencies that handle adoption.
From the link:
Here are some things to consider if you are thinking about adoption.
True False
1. I can accept not being my child's primary parent. [ ] [ ]
2. Adoption feels like what I ought to do, not what I want to do. [ ] [ ]
3. I don't feel I can fulfill all my child's needs and parent, now. [ ] [ ]
4. I'm choosing adoption because abortion scares me. [ ] [ ]
5. The child's father will approve of adoption. [ ] [ ]
6. No one is pressuring me to choose adoption. [ ] [ ]
7. I'll know my child will be treated well. [ ] [ ]
8. I can cope with the feelings of loss that I may have. [ ] [ ]
9. I have people in my life who will help me through the pregnancy and adoption. [ ] [ ]
10. I respect women who place a child for adoption. [ ] [ ]
OK. Let's look at the highlighted questions. Number two implies that she is only doing it out of a feeling of guilt. Number four implies that she is doing it only because she is scared of abortion. Number five implies that she is doing it only because the father would approve, not because she thinks it is right. Number six, what about the feelings of loss after an abortion.
I'm sorry, but I doubt Planned Parenthood's motives here.

Yeah, I Noticed all the legal speak(legalese) in the adoption portion too. Probably intended to scare those persuing adoption as a means out of it with the impression of legal fees and loss of rights crap thrown in. Like the wouldn't lose the option of visiting their kids after an abortion.

Did you notice that one sentence which said that adoption leaves the mother feeling worse than they had thought they would? Worse than abortion would have?
I didn't notice it but I'm not surprised.
Placing a child for adoption is very painful process.
But in the many adoptions these days there is communication with the adoptive parents and the baby, pictures, visits - and of course, the knowledge that you did the right thing.
I'm going to reveal something personal. I am 55 years old, and have some health issues. 2 years ago, when my daughter was 15, she got pregnant.
She finished the school year (the school worked with us on this), and because she was too young to be raising a child, and I was too old and decrepit.
After the initial shock, and with much prayer, my daughter decided to place the baby for adoption. My daughter chose the couple. We have regular communications with them, and just visited with them last weekend.
The couple is glowingly happy - told us their life is now complete. The baby is beautiful and a really happy baby. They love him as much as we do, and they are mature, settled and financially stable enough to give him a great life.
We have taken some flak for 'giving away' the baby, but we didn't. We planned the baby's future. And it was the right decision. But the day we put the baby into that couple's hands was one of the most painful days of my life. But the right thing to do. And we can live with ourselves.

Of the three moonbats I have discussed this most with at work, one hates Dick Cheney, one hates Bush and the other hates Palin.
On Palin he justifies this by asking what magazines the reads (Katie Couric interview). I can get nothing of substance when pressed, yet the hatred is there.
The bush hater wont even engage in discussion because he knows he has no idea what he is talking about.
And the Cheney hater is simply a troofer.
This is what elected O and they have no idea what they have done.
Mark Levin is wrong, there aren't 56 million of us, there are far more its just that a large number of them have no idea what they voted for. All they were doing is parroting the anti-bush mantra.
And they are sucking us all down the rat hole with them.

Many I know are forced to go to foreign countries because the wait is so long here. and we all know that it has been glamorized to have children without fathers. This is one hope I have for Obama. Now that he no longer has to kowtow to African Americans, he will address the huge problem that community has with black males and marriage, responsibility, etc.

Well, certainly, they provide services that are hard to get elsewhere, and they are interested in ensuring that those services remain legal. No surprise there. There are many agencies that provide adoption services, and there's also the possibility of placing kids for adoption through lawyers (i.e., without an agency of any sort being involved). It would hardly make sense for them to duplicate those services.

I have no experience myself, but have read that women after they have an abortion think of their child on what would have been their first birthday, day dream about feeling their little hand holding onto her finger, wonder what they would look like at age two, wish she could throw them a birthday party at age three. On and on it goes. Dreadful.
I don't think there are any data to support those claims. Most women who have abortions do very well psychologically. There's actually quite a lot of research on this topic. You might want to check out this summary.

Sorry, JustMyView. PP is wholly and completely in the abortion bag. They "earned" over $1B dollars last year (" " because they're a non-profit) with over $300M coming from the taxpayers. They are the leading provider of abortions in the country and spent $10M on electing candidates who are 100% pro-abortion. This is sad window-dressing.Well, certainly, they provide services that are hard to get elsewhere, and they are interested in ensuring that those services remain legal. No surprise there. There are many agencies that provide adoption services, and there's also the possibility of placing kids for adoption through lawyers (i.e., without an agency of any sort being involved). It would hardly make sense for them to duplicate those services.
Well, I figured you knew that. I was just stating that them pretending to be in favor of adoption is just for public consumption in case their tax status is ever questioned (any congressmen listening?).

I saw Bill Ayers on Good Morning America when I was getting ready for work. He was on there as smug and unrepentant as ever. The anchor pressed him and said something to the effect "you have to see how a guy running for president..how your association would be questioned." To paraphrase: He said he absolutely rejected that assertion. Just because we had coffee, served an a few boards together and helped him with his political career. That's just quilt by association. unbelievable. Someone surely will get a full transcript later. Through the whole thing I just kept thinking "what does it matter now, a little late guys".

Thank ya'll.
Once we got over the shock, we took the approach that the activity that got her pregnant wasn't what we wanted her to be engaging in (no kidding), but once it was a fact - the condition of being pregnant is not "sinful" or evil in any way.
Not to be insensitive, but look around you. There are 6 billion plus human beings on planet earth. We all got here the exact same way. Sex is about as normal and natural an event as there is, and the whole point of sex is to get the female pregnant. Yes we engage in it for recreational purposes, but the whole point is reproduction.
Because of the complex economic society we live in today, many wise people have taken to discouraging young people from reproducing before they are financially capable of supporting their offspring, this view however wise and prudent it may be, is physiologically at odds with what tens of thousands of years of evolutionary biology has hardwired into human beings.
I commend you for the wisdom of your actions, but find it a bit disturbing that you were shocked that your daughter behaved in a totally natural human manner. I could see you being disappointed that she failed to follow your advice and teaching. But to be shocked that she followed perhaps one of the strongest of all biological imperatives?
I have little doubt that your daughter is a good person, she is after all your daughter, and I have no doubt that you have taught her well. At the end of the day however she is her own person, and as she gets older she will make more and more of her own decisions and will have to live with the consequences of those decisions.
That you continue to love her and encourage her to make wise decisions shows the nature of your character, your character will shape her character and that is a good thing.

Morning, Ya'll. It's a rainy/drizzly and chilly Friday morn here in the Mid TN boonies. Mom and I have an appointment with a social worker who is coming out to the house at 10 to interview us for a financial assistance program that would help pay for adult day care for mom. It's a private non-profit, so I'm glad it wouldn't be pulling any more resources from the Gov.
From what she's said so far, they would pay most of the costs of two full 8-hour days per week for mom's Adult day care fees, and then mom would only have to contribute $58 per month. That would mean this non-profit group would be chipping in upwards of $200 per month. Woot!

[ ] [ ]OK.
Wow, this is an eye-opener. I worked for a crisis pregnancy center that focused on emotionally supporting the mother. Some choose to adopt, most choose to keep the baby. They knew we were not an abortion provider. The Birthright tag line is ...every child has the right to be born.
Obviously PP isn't making money if the baby is being kept or adopted.

Let me see if I understand Ayers' thinking...
1. Ayers admits he engaged in bombing and wishes he did more.
2. Ayers claims his bombings were "education" not terrorism.
3. Ayers admits he had a long and close association with Obama.

Dorian - I was not shocked that she was sexually active. It is natural to humans, and the teen years are the most difficult. Teens have been having sex since the beginning of time; people used to be married at that age, but that's no longer the case.
It was simply a surprise, I'm very open with my daughter and had told her often that if she believed she was going to become sexually active, to let me know so I could get her to a doctor for the proper safeguards.
But she didn't. The 'shock' was mostly trying to figure out, where do we go from here? How does she finish school? What sort of derision will she face (the final answer: NONE).
She's a good kid, always was.

I'm sure there are women who've had abortions who regret it, but, heck, there are women who've had kids that regret it. I don't minimize it, but I do think it's important to look at systematically collected data, and the people who show up in a pastor's office are not a random sample of people who've had abortions. They're people who have problems, people who might have had problems no matter how they handled the pregnancy or even if they'd never gotten pregnant. Again, there's a lot of high-quality research on this topic, summarized at the link I gave above.

For anybody unfamiliar with how the Chicago Democratic Machine works, here is a good example.
Rep. Danny Davis was found not guilty Wednesday of "driving left of center" in Lawndale last November -- a ticket Davis had blamed on racial profiling.
The Traffic Court trial did little to shed light on what happened when Chicago Police curbed Davis' black sedan and ticketed him for an alleged lane violation. The Chicago Police officer who spoke to Davis during the traffic stop did not appear in court. That officer's partner, Police Officer Laura Kuhlmann, testified that Davis was driving a gray car on 16th Street and crossed the double yellow line when turning left onto Kedzie.
Cook County Judge Martin Coughlin kept discussion focused on Davis' alleged left turn crossing the center line and refused to hear testimony from Kuhlmann about a second time she claimed Davis' vehicle drifted over the double yellow lines. Davis remained silent.
Coughlin dismissed the charge, saying "of course" Davis crossed the double yellow line -- that's what happens when you make a left turn.
Last November, Davis made headlines for filing a complaint with police claiming the traffic stop was an example of racial profiling.
After court Wednesday, Davis said he hoped the white officers who ticketed him simply had made a mistake and that he wasn't stopped for "driving while black."
"I hope this was not a case of racial profiling," Davis said. "All I know is that I was driving a black car. The officer said I was driving a gray car. . . . The officer said I made a left turn off 16th Street onto Kedzie. And I've never been on 16th Street."
Danny, Davis, former City Alderman, is one of the leading candidates to be appointed by Governor Blagojevich to fill Obama's empty Senate seat.
As you can see from the story, the Cook County Judge carefully controlled the testimony allowed in court, and gave Davis a walk. Davis then slandered the cops involved alleging racism.
This is par for the course in Chicago. Late great columnist Mike Royko (who interestingly enough once tried to punch me out by a cab stand on Michigan Avenue, but that is a long story), used to write about this stuff often. Royko often wrote about how the "fix was in" in Chicago.
My guess is the officers involved will get punished by being transferred to the sticks for the rest of their careers, banished to working the midnight shift and chasing humping teenagers out of parks.
This is how the Chicago Machine works. They control the courts, they control the elections, they control the media (you have to dig to find this story) it's all about who you know and who you politically support. They are used to having it all their way.
The PR Dept. at City Hall has a slogan, calling Chicago "The City that Works".
For those of us who lived there, we would alter that to say "the city that jerks together, works together".
Get used to this folks, some of these folks are now coming to Washington.

Wikipedia? Give me a break. Don't think a lot of them don't hurt. There have been stdies that showed higher rates of depression and suicide among post-abortive women. As for "choice"? Most of them don't feel they had a choice, as they were pressured by boyfriends, husbands, or families to have abortions. Abortion is all about abortionists making money, plain and simple.
I was very disappointed how all those black churches supported Obama, knowing that millions of black babies have been aborted over the years. Because of abortion, the number of Hispanics have overtaken blacks in the population.

So in Ayers' mind, bombing is not terrorism and associating with somebody is not associating.
That justification is reminiscent of Robert Spencer's for his support of Vlaams Belang. He supports their anti-jihad stance, but as for their other little pesky anti-semitism, well, he has never said he supports that.
The problem with Obama associating with Ayers is that Ayers contributes nothing positive to education - only the goal of raising little communists - so the whole thing stinks to high heaven.

Not in my experience. 23 years of being a Pastor's wife and counseling young women. Husband also the head of a crisis pregnancy center. Family members. Friends.
Lots of pain out there. Don't minimize it.
I have close personal friends, one had an abortion and the other gave her baby up for adoption. I think we've broached the subject only one time many years ago and I can still feel their pain.

Damn right. First, they make money selling women birth control. Then, when the birth control fails (for whatever reason), they make money off the abortion.

Women who kill their unborn child are not bothered by it at all.

Executing convicted murderers is wrong.

Found this in a commodity forum my hubby visits, it's long, but interesting. Any financial Lizard thoughts?
If you think this weekend's G-20 meetings in Washington are only about designing short-term fixes to the financial system and regulatory reforms for banks, hedge funds, brokers, mortgage companies and investment banks ... think again.
Behind the scenes, a far more fundamental fix is being discussed — the possible revaluation of gold and the birth of an entirely new monetary system.
I've been studying this issue in great depth, for many years now. And given the speed at which the financial crisis is unfolding, I would be very surprised if what I'm about to tell you now is not on the G-20 table this weekend.
Furthermore, I believe the end result will make a $2,270 price target for gold look conservative, to say the least. You'll see why in a minute.
First, the G-20's motive for a new monetary system: It's driven by and based upon this very simple proposition ...
'If we can't print money fast enough to fend off another deflationary Great Depression, then let's change the value of the money.'
I call it ...
'The G-20's Secret Debt Solution'
It would be a strategy designed to ease the burden of ALL debts — by simultaneously devaluing ALL currencies ... and re-inflating ALL asset prices.
That's what central banks and governments around the world are going to start talking about this weekend — a new financial order that includes new monetary units that helps to wipe clean the world's debt ledgers.
It won't be an easy deal to broker, since the U.S. is the world's largest debtor. But remember: Debts are now going bad all over the world. So everyone would benefit.
Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke ... Treasury Secretary Paulson ... President Bush ... President-elect Obama ... former Fed Chairman Paul Volcker ... Warren Buffett ... and central bankers and politicians all over the world agree a new monetary system is needed.
So they'll start hashing out the details to get the new financial architecture deployed as quickly as possible.
If you think I'm crazy or propagating some kind of conspiracy theory, then consider the historical precedent ...
To end the Great Depression in 1933 Franklin Roosevelt devalued the dollar via Executive Order #6102, confiscating gold and raising its price 69.3%, effectively kick starting asset reflation.
Only this time, it won't be just the U.S. that devalues its currency. The world is too interconnected. Instead, the world's leading countries will propose a simultaneous and universal currency devaluation.
This time, they will NOT confiscate gold. There would be riots all over the globe if they even mentioned the 'C' word.
But they don't have to confiscate gold. Here's one scenario ...
They cease all gold sales and instead, raise the current official central bank price of gold from its booked value of $42.22 an ounce — to a price that monetizes a large enough portion of the world's outstanding debts.
That way, just like in 1933, the debts become a fraction of re-inflated asset prices (led higher by the gold price).
to be continued....

Cook County Judge Martin Coughlin kept discussion focused on Davis' alleged left turn crossing the center line and refused to hear testimony from Kuhlmann about a second time she claimed Davis' vehicle drifted over the double yellow lines.
I wonder if there was a valid legal reason for the Judge to exclude the evidence. Maybe it was hearsay evidence which the witness was told by the other cop who did not show up to testify.
If so, then the legal result was correct and there was no "fix".
And why would the reporter have chosen to omit the Judge's reason for excluding the evidence?

Continued....
And this time, instead of staying with the dollar as a reserve currency, the G-20 issues three new monetary units of exchange, each with equal reserve status.
The three currencies will essentially be a new dollar, new euro, and a new pan-Asian currency. (The Chinese yuan may survive as a fourth currency, but it will be linked to a basket of the three new currencies.)
The new fiat monetary units would be worth less than the old ones. For instance, it could take 10 new units of money to buy 1 old dollar or euro.
New names would be given to the new currencies to help rid the world of the ghost of a system that failed. Additional regulations and programs would be designed and implemented to ease the transition to a new monetary system.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) would implement the new financial system in conjunction with central banks and governments around the world.
Keep in mind that the IMF is already set up to handle the transition, and has had contingency plans allowing for it since the institution was formed in 1944.
Included in the design and transition to a new monetary system ...
A. A new fixed-rate currency regime. Immediately upon upping the price of gold and introducing the new currencies, a new fixed exchange rate system would be re-introduced. The floating exchange rate system would be tossed into the dust bin along with the old currencies.
This would kill any speculation about further devaluations in the currency markets, and drastically reduce market volatility.
B. To sell the program to savers and protect them from the currency devaluation, compensatory measures would be enacted. For instance, a one-time windfall tax-free deposit could be issued by governments directly to citizens' accounts, or, to employer-sponsored pensions, to IRAs, or Social Security accounts.
Income taxes may subsequently be raised to pay for the give-away, or a nominal global type of sales tax could be enacted to help pay for the new system and the compensatory measures.
C. Additional programs would be designed to protect lenders and creditors. Lenders stand a much higher chance of getting paid off under the new monetary system — but with a currency whose purchasing power would now be a fraction of what it was when the loans were originated.
So programs would have to be designed to help lenders offset the inflationary costs of their devalued loans, probably via the tax code.
Naturally, all this is a bit more complicated than I've spelled out above. But that gives you a big-picture outline of what the plan could look like. And I think major changes like these are going to be set in motion at this weekend's G-20 meetings in Washington.
Would they work?
Yes. They would help avoid a repeat of the deflationary Great Depression. But don't expect even a new monetary system to put the U.S. or the global economy back on track toward the high rates of real growth that we've seen over the last several years. That's simply not going to happen. Not for a while.

Last Section:
Instead, I'm talking about a massive asset price reflation, negative real economic growth in the U.S. and Europe — but continued real GDP gains in Asia.
The Big Question: What gold price would be legislated to reflate the U.S. and global economy?
I can't tell you what gold price the G-20 would ultimately agree to. But here's what they will be looking at ...
To monetize 100% of the outstanding public and private sector debt in the U.S., the official government price of gold would have to be raised to about $53,000 per ounce.
To monetize 50%, the price of gold would have to be raised to around $26,500 an ounce.
To monetize 20% would require a gold price a hair over $10,600 an ounce.
To monetize just 10%, gold would have to be priced just over $5,300 an ounce.
Those figures are just based on the U.S. debt structure and do not factor in global debts gone bad. But since the U.S. is the world's largest debtor and the epicenter of the crisis, the G-20 will likely base their final decision mostly on the U.S. debt structure.
So how much debt do I think would be monetized via an executive order that raises the official price of gold? What kind of currency devaluation would I expect as a result?
I would not be surprised to see the G-20 monetize at least 20% of the U.S. debt markets. THAT MEANS ...
Gold would be priced at over $10,000 an ounce.
Currencies would be devalued by a factor of at least 12 to 1, meaning it would take 12 new dollars or euros to equal 1 old dollar or euro.
The return of the Gold Standard?
You ask, 'how could this be accomplished when we no longer have a gold standard? Further, are you advocating a gold standard?'
My answers:
First, you don't need a gold standard to accomplish a devaluation of currencies and revaluation of the monetary system.
By offering to pay over $10,000 an ounce for gold, central banks can effectively accomplish the same end goal — monetizing and reducing the burden of debts, via inflating asset prices in fiat money terms.
Naturally, hoards of gold investors will cash in their gold. The central banks will pile it up. At the same time, other hoards of investors will not sell their gold, even at $10,000 an ounce. But the actual movement of the gold will not matter. It is the psychological impact and the devaluation of paper currencies that matters.
Second, I do NOT advocate a fully convertible gold standard. Never have. There isn't enough gold in the world to make currencies convertible into gold. It would end up backfiring, restricting the supply of money and credit.
Good trading to you all. LOL

Half of all pregnancies among African Americans end in abortions and half of all abortions performed in the US are of African Americans. There have been 40 million abortions since Roe vs Wade. Which suggests there would be up to 20 million more African Americans alive today if they had not been aborted. That would significantly alter the demographics of the country.

Levin is wrong... Liberalism is not the philosophy of the stupid... it is the philosophy of lies.
I disagree, partly. It's both. The deceivers and the deceived. The deceivers are anything but stupid. They are wily, crafty, sly, quite intelligent, and they know exactly what they are doing and who they are fooling. Just like the Serpent from Genesis, they are "subtil". Anything but stupid. The people who are stupid are the fooled. They are deceived by the deceivers, for many reasons, not least of which is because they have been programmed. Programmed by their schools, by the television, by the popular culture. It's a cycle, too. They are stupid for watching TV, for believing all that they hear on it, which makes them stupid. Rinse and repeat. For generations. The schools' methods of "teaching" are quite (hate to say this) intelligently designed, by intelligent, EVIL people. The de-educational programming on television? Likewise. It is knee-jerk to claim that these people are stupid, and just as much to claim that the recipients of all this programming are plain evil. Al Gore is not stupid, although it's fun to say this, and probably cathartic. He is quite intelligent, and knows exactly what he is doing. Liberalism is twofold - the .1% who decieve the 99.9%, quite intentionally. For the 99.9%, I try to say Forgive them, for they know not what they do. The others? I have nothing to say that would not make Charles' site look bad.
Over on the Ayers thread at ABCnews many commenters are saying things like, "What's the big deal? Ayers is just a stupid ex-hippie." I want to SCREAM at them, "NO! He is FAR from stupid. He is a consciously evil liar, manipulator, and communist revolutionary, and he daily plots evil against you, your neighbors, and, most insidiously, your kids' minds." Even Rush falls into it. "How can they be so mind-bogglingly stupid?!", he'll say, about someone who is obviously on the Deciever side of this dichotomy. I know he knows, but it's just so darn EASY to take that road.
Morning all.

I have to run folks, but I'll try to check back later. Before leaving, though, I want to say that I'm not arguing for or against the morality of abortion. That's a decision each person has to make for him or herself. But I am arguing for attention to empirical reality in discussing the consequences of abortion. I jumped into the conversation above because of blanket assertions about the psychological damage suffered by women who have abortions. Those claims just can't be supported. No doubt, there are some women who suffer post-abortion psychological trauma, but the number is small, and some evidence indicates they are women who have other psychological problems such as depression.
Arguing about "a woman I knew" or "the people who consult me as a pastor" is interesting, but it's not empirically compelling because there are no comparisons, no control in the selection of observations, and no systematic observations of the person's psychological condition.
See you later.

Good morning, all...
Well, I glanced at Charles' post below about the myserious genome, and that may explain the screwy DNA results I just got back on my dog.
The first test (when it only tested for 38 breeds) said that the breakdown of influences was: significant DNA contribution of Cocker Spaniel, small contribution Whippet. Labrador Retriever didn't show up at all, though it was in the original list of breeds covered.
The new results, which test for 105 breeds, are: significant DNA contribution Whippet and Labrador Retriever, small contribution Cocker Spaniel and -- wait for it -- "German Shepherd Dog."
Maybe it's too early in the morning, but I can't seem to do the mental origami that would cause the relative contributions of the Whippet and Cocker Spaniel DNA to reverse themselves, nor can I figure out why Lab wasn't picked up in the first test.

One of my sons came home and told us that his girlfriend was pregnant (several years ago). He was 16 and she was 15.
My reaction? I told him that he was in for a life sentence and that he would be taking care of that child for longer than he was alive. He asked what he should do and my comment was for him to get a job, save the money and take care of the baby. He eventually dropped out of school, got a GED and now is in his Junior year of college at the age of 28.
He's shocked some of the post high school crowd with reality.

Political opinions have nothing to do with the intelligence or stupidity of a person. You can always find some very smart people who hold very "stupid" political beliefs and visa-versa. Politics are all about ethics, morality, and the psychology of the person. You believe the political philosophy you do because you believe it is ethically or morally correct. The set of values you judge issues by is formed by your upbringing, your experiences, your moral framework and your personal psychology.

Trust me when I say to you that EVEN UNDER KING RICHARD, Chicago is NO WHERE nearly as corrupt as it was under KING AL CAPONE. Not by a long shot.
IIRC, the real Eliot Ness wound up have more than a quarter of the cops in Chicago fired, got the Feds to clean out the local judiciary and the like - then let the Feds take Capone down on a tax evasion charge!

I need coffee. ;)

More on that almost duke out at the cab stand 3W?
I worked a private security gig for a major bank in Chicago for a while when I was in college in Chicago, and got around the City a lot. I used to run into Royko here and there, we knew each other enough to say hello on the street.
One day I had to go find one of the bank top executives who had a habit of getting lost at lunch and would try his best to drink some dive bar dry. So I started hitting the joints on Wells and then Michigan Ave. I found the guy in a sleazy dive wrapping himself around a pitcher of martini's, and Mr. Royko was right there matching him drink for drink.
What these two guys did not notice, but I did when I walked in, was there were a couple of street skells hanging out by the door, lining them up to roll them as soon as the two inebriated guys left to leave.
So, not wanting to just take my guy and leave Royko to rolled, I grabbed them both and escorted them out to the cab stand. I got them to a cab and got the back door open, when Royko decided to go back in and finish off his drink. I stopped him and he started swinging on me.
Royko was a mean drunk.
So there I was, a 20-something, wet behind the ears Chicago kid with local legend Mike Royko drunkenly trying to punch me out on the street on broad daylight.
I bobbed and weaved, realizing that if I so much as tapped him I was toast in that city. After a few wild swings by Mike, I pulled his coat up over his arms like you see the hockey players do in a fight to tie him up, threw him into the back of the cab, tossed the cabbie a ten-spot and told him to get the H*** out of here.
A couple weeks later I ran into Mike on the street and he apologized.

Sorry for the delay in responding folks -- I'm back to the damn home page reloading problem when I hit the "reply" button and the usual fix isn't fixing it.

Good morning, and thank you kindly -- I could use a cup that size -- yesterday was one of those rare 14 hour days I have to put in...

The full test is now $120 but I didn't pay near that for either the original or the upgraded one.

It seems like it, that's for sure. Or at least running the business. Took them three weeks to get me the sample kit and over 7 weeks to get the results, which they say will take four weeks.

How much did you pay, if you don't mind me asking? I won't be offended if you don't reply, it's just that we have a schnoodle that I personally don't think has any poodle in her at all.
The DNA test we use costs about $160. There are about 4-5 different ones out there now, and prices may vary depending on which one your vet uses and what area of the country you are in.

Take your calcium - My 90 - something year old grandmother said she wanted to die falling out of a tree, and she almost did.
I'm scared of heights :-)
And yes, calcium it is, as I'm NOT having a broken hip when I'm older for sure

I wonder if there was a valid legal reason for the Judge to exclude the evidence. Maybe it was hearsay evidence which the witness was told by the other cop who did not show up to testify.
If so, then the legal result was correct and there was no "fix".
And why would the reporter have chosen to omit the Judge's reason for excluding the evidence?
I was carful to put "Cook County" in front of the word "judge".
For anybody familiar with how the Chicago Machine works, that is all you need to know.
The legal reason the judge did it is cause the judge felt like it, and in Chicago, when you are tossing out a charge against a machine politician, that is all you need.

Ok, I could argue that some experience or change in values led you to read those books or that reading the books was the "experience"... but that's up to you to determine. My point is, you did not suddenly get smarter after reading those books. Your political opinions are not tied to your intelligence level.

I moved half-way across the country when I was about four months pregnant but the fucker STILL tried to cause me mental anguish. I sicced my attorney on his attorney.
I am so very glad that you and the Kid are here and doing FABULOUS.

My wife talks about her ex doing the mental shit. I had no idea how that worked. Not a psych major! Nor an abuser/manipulator. She showed me how that thing, I refuse to call it a man., did the mental crap. Absolutely insidious and evil.

I've got one for you. My friend divorced her abusive husband 8 years ago after he broke down the bedroom door and raped her. You can still see all the damage to the molding around the door frame.
Anyway, now they have been ordered by the divorce judge to attend parenting counseling together. She has to sit next to her rapist while he lies to this woman who tells them that parenting is a 50/50 proposition. My friend called me last night after their first session, and she said she felt sick to her stomach as he sat there giving these Mr. Child Psychologist answers.

Seriously... I've never really seen an election be stolen this obviously... And no one is making a big deal about it...
Just when I think we have sunk to our lowest we keep digging...
Maybe the Iraqis could come to Minnesota & teach them about honest elections.

re: #839 Ward Cleaver
Me too. I want the Dems and Obama to screw up and overreach as much as possible in the next two years, so that in 2010 the GOP pick up seats in both the House and Senate.
One would hope... Especially since in 2012, Congress will get to redesign their districts post-Census...
And, there aren't that many more seats for the GOP to seemingly lose...
