The Evasions of Bill Ayers
ABC News has put Chris Cuomo’s interview with William Ayers online, and it’s exactly as we predicted; he doesn’t deny anything in his past, but claims he was smeared by the “blogosphere.” According to Ayers, he wasn’t a terrorist. He was a hero, fighting injustice, who never intended to hurt anyone—despite those bombs filled with nails and shrapnel. And yes, he was close to Barack Obama, but he wishes he were even closer.
Cuomo never really follows up on any of Ayers’ evasions, which is what we’ve come to expect from the mainstream media.
The interview is in two parts:
Ayers: Obama Relationship a ‘Myth’
Ayers: ‘We Never Committed Terror’
Whatever you think of Ayers, he played this one smart. He stayed out of the news until Obama was safely elected, because he knew if he admitted the personal friendship, and expressed his real opinions about radicalizing students, reparations, abolishing prisons, etc., his relationship with Obama would—rightfully—become a major issue in the campaign. And he counted on the media not to investigate him.
UPDATE at 11/14/08 11:29:29 am:
The ABC article about this interview absolutely reeks of condescension and bias: Campaign Boogeyman William Ayers Talks to ‘GMA’.
“Boogeyman,” of course, is one of those technical terms used by journalists.
