Ok, the voltage regulator wasn't the only issue with mom's car. Replaced the VR on Monday, went out to start the car today and got "clickclickclickclick".

My sister came over and I was able to jump off the battery, and it ran fine. Made three stops, one was over an hour.

What the heck is wrong with my mom's car? Battery?

I hate remakes of classics. It show's how little freshness there is in Hollywood. Like there's a remake of "The Day The Earth Stood Still" coming out. They'll use all their 21 century special effects wizardry and ruin it. I'll stick to the 1951 film.

stuck solenoid?

Dunno what that means. But we had no problems with the car until it turned a bit cold here. We got "clickclickclick" and jumped it off, it ran for a couple of days, and it was fine.

Coldish nigh - went out the next day, and nothing. No click click. Brother came over and jumped us off, all was well for a few days.

Then on Monday we had "nothing". Brother came and jumped us off, then we went to AutoZone and we figured it was the voltage regulator. $10, that was easy.

Then early this afternoon, it was "clickclickclick" again.

My sister came and we jumped it off, I made three stops and at the end all was well.

WACKY! STUPID! CARS!

One of the formulas (volume of a sphere, I felt smart for recognizing it) not only spelled out pi instead of using the symbol but they also spelled pi wrong, pie. Hello?!

62 coldwarrior  Fri, Nov 14, 2008 9:14:07pm

re: #58 Intrepid

nope, not solenoid.

the battery is not providing enough amperage to the starter motor to get it to rotate the engine. therefore the battery is not holding a charge or it is not getting enough juice from the alternator.

if it runs fine after it starts, the i'm gonna bet its the battery.

go to autozone and they will diagnose it for you and gladly sell you the parts to fix it.

re: #31 Intrepid

Could be a lot of things, really. I had a similar problem with my '82 VW Rabbit (Alice). Might be a battery cable thing. They sometimes corrode enough that they won't carry the charge needed to fully turn the started. Find a length of cable and make the connection once each on the + and - sides. See if that works.

The other suggestion would be to rap on the starter the next time you have that problem (heh, old school) with your tire iron. If it starts right after that, you've got a dead spot on the starter.

Another one, if a manual transmission. Put it in 4th or 5th gear and shove it a bit. Try to start it. This could also indicate a starter issue.

Keep in mind, it's been years since I've turned my own wrench on my vehicles, so I may have mixed up my tests/solutions.

Also keep in mind that I've been drinking bourbon.

Replacing the VR won't do any good until the engine has run long enough to restore the charge in the battery.

I'd look at three potential problems:
1. buildup of corrosion where the battery terminal clamp attaches to the battery; causes a high-resistance connection that mimics a dead battery. remove the terminals, and clean the mating surfaces with sandpaper or a wire brush.

2. the battery has gone bad; either of its own account, or because of chronic under-charging from the bad regulator

3. some device in the car is drawing current when it's not supposed to be, and draining the battery when left overnight. trunk light is a common culprit. you could check for this condition by disconnecting the (charged) battery overnight, and trying to start the car in the morning upon reconnecting the cable

Don't you have any "service stations" or Lincoln dealers (with service departments) you could take it too - even if it is 19 years old they should know if it's a common problem or not.
Still betting on the battery, though.

74 Randall Gross  Fri, Nov 14, 2008 9:16:58pm

re: #58 Intrepid

Have the battery tested, check the wires, and it could also be a bad starter solenoid if the battery's good. Cold weather shrinks cables, so if you have one that's loose it could be pulling away from good contact.

That reminds me of how my geometry teacher helped us remember the formula for the volume of a cylinder. He said, "Imagine a pizza, which is basically a wide cylinder with a very low height. If it has a height of a and radius of z, then the formula for the volume is: pi•zza!"

OK, my money's on the battery then. But I'd still check the alternator.
Don't you have any "service stations" or Lincoln dealers (with service departments) you could take it too - even if it is 19 years old they should know if it's a common problem or not.
Still betting on the battery, though.

Can check alternator by turning on all the lights and see if they are bright as should be or if dim...and car will start to die...everything pulling to much for alternator to do the job...
and if alternator is bad...then it would not keep battery charged up...

Gradually it was disclosed to me that the line separating good and evil passes not through states, nor between classes, nor between political parties either, but right through every human heart, and through all human hearts. This line shifts. Inside us, it oscillates with the years. Even within hearts overwhlemed by evil, one small bridgehead of good is retained; and even in the best of all hearts, there remains a small corner of evil.

I hate remakes of classics. It show's how little freshness there is in Hollywood.

I'll disagree with you on this one. The De Niro version of Frankenstein was much more faithful to the book than was the Boris Karloff story, and the remake of Cape Fear (also w/ De Niro) gave me a whole new appreciation for the term "charming psychopath".

I now don't have to ask why so many Americans voted for Barack Obama. A friend of mine, a Canadian married to a Ukrainian woman and living in Ukraine, took umbrage at an e-mail I sent him criticizing Obama (he called it "neo-Nazi hate mail" and said I was attacking Obama before even giving him a chance, which he called "typical American" behavior.

But then he turns around and sends me this e-mail or post from another American, whose opinion is apparently more to his liking. I think my friend is just desperate to believe the best about Obama, because he doesn't want to accept that his adopted country could be screwed.

Anyway, here's the e-mail from the American that he sent me. It's incredibly delusional crap. Warning: you may be tearing your hair out in frustration at the stupidity and ignorance well before you finish reading.

Let me make this clear. I am white. Race had nothing to do with my vote. And I am more proud of my country, than I have been in my entire lifetime. I live in a nation that has been subjected to the most secretive and illegal government in our history. A government that shamed our nation by continually lying to us, breaking our own laws, and breaking the laws of the entire world. We found out that, in the name of a war we didn’t approve of, our leaders illegally imprisoned and even tortured people. We found out that our government was illegally listening in on the phone calls of our very own citizens. And we woke up. Finally, we did something that people in so many countries CAN’T do. We said “No!”. We said “No!” to those who told us that only the sons of the powerful, could become leaders. We said “No!” to those who told us that our sons and daughters should die for causes we didn’t believe in. That once we found out there were no
weapons of mass destruction, it was time to stop killing others and killing our own, in the name of the Holy Oil Company. We said “No!” to the idea that there are any limits, to what any American can achieve, regardless of upbringing or color. That is America.
I am just an average American but I can tell you with all certainty, America changed today. The torture which has been a stain on our flag, will end soon. The ignorance, arrogance and hubris with which our leaders have treated the entire globe, is over. Obama is black but we didn’t vote for Obama because he is black. Obama is smart but we didn’t vote for Obama because he is smart. Obama has the calm, humble temperament that is needed in a leader, during extremely difficult times. He has made clear that what is best about America is not found in our military strength but in the strength of our hearts. Gratitude does not come from protecting those who do not want your protection. Diplomacy does not mean weakness. It is the strength of our hearts and purity of our actions, by which others decide to whether to view us with admiration or disdain. That is what has made America great in the past and THAT is why we voted for Obama now. He is America at our
best. We have been a great nation dying of thirst for great leadership. I am just an average American but I promise you that soon, the rest of the world will see what I voted for. When I voted for Barack Obama, I voted for America.

Battery?

I had trouble when I moved to a new house with 2 of my cars. It happened when the seasons changed and was due to moisture condensate in the starter motors. Mine were parked outside on the north side of the house. Might not be the problem but it was hard to diagnose FWIW.

re: #67 Alberta Oil Peon

Your No 3 is particularly interesting, because this make/model car has lots of "extras". Some sort of weight control thingy that was supposed to be turned off...

Here's the etymology from OED:

talisman
1638, from Fr. talisman, in part via Arabic tilsam (pl. tilsaman), a Gk. loan-word; in part directly from Byzantine Gk. telesma "talisman, religious rite, payment," earlier "consecration, ceremony," originally "completion," from telein "perform (religious rites), pay (tax), fulfill," from telos "completion, end, tax" (see tele-).

(heh - please understand that my brother won't give up until he fixes it! Even if he's over his head. He's much like our dad in that way...lol)

I can relate to that!

Do check for stray current drain before buying a new battery. Because if a stray current drain (aka phantom load) exists, it will take out the new battery, eventually. Lincolns are complex cars with a mess of electrical gadgets.

I would be disappointed if I were not allowed to discuss current events with the folks here at LGF, because I find them well informed and frequently humorous. It is a virtual community made up of personalities that I enjoy associating with and whose posts I enjoy reading even if I disagree with them from time to time.

But I do agree that some people can be quite nasty, and the rest of us benefit from not having to read their disgusting and ill informed opinions.
There is no reason for those of us here to be overly concerned that a few obnoxious people are asked to post their statements elsewhere.

Good grief.

It's rather remarkable to think that at one point in mankind's history the idea of irrational numbers was considered akin to blasphemy.

There are prime numbers that are illegal to communicate, as the use of them would allow you to break into government databases. Considering that you'll eventually run across every possible number sequence in Pi, this means there are parts of Pi that are illegal!

I really don't think we need to go beyond the Feynman Point myself.

Trivia: If the universe were a perfect sphere (it isn't), you knew the exact distance around it, and you wanted to know the diameter of the universe to the nearest proton, you would only need to use Pi to 40 places after the decimal point.

As I type I have a Kimber with hollowpoints next to me. You must fire yours at the range with hollowpoints, see how it shoots. See if it jams. If it does, how often, and how familiar are you with clearing the jam? If it jams too much, first option is Kimber itself. Some Kimber have extractor problems. They can fix these. Or the feed ramp may need to be smoothed out. Or, it could be defective magazines, or maybe the magazines just need the cartridges tapped back in the magazine.

re: #221 Occasional Reader

True...(?)... 1911's get their "punch and knock down" power from the mass of ball ammo. Hollow points are really a gun dealers way of making you buy more expensive ammo. It is the MASS of the projectile that coupled with the kinetic energy (Physics and ballistics) create the knock-down power. The greatness of true 1911's as a combat handgun is the ability fire a round (Muz-Vel) of about 845 ft/sec that distributes kinetic energy of a Much higher rate than that of a 9mm.

Size Matters

Did that help?

Not as far as I know - Miguel suffered a stroke (and I suspect a very bad one or had a second one). His last posts here were about that and I e-mailed him and called him on the phone and he indicated he had trouble typing.
But no one answers his phone now. And I've sent e-mails just asking him to hit "reply" if he needed help and - nothing.

Hollow points are really a gun dealers way of making you buy more expensive ammo.

Now that, I don't agree with.

The dark art of wound ballistics tells us that delivered kinetic energy, measured in strictly physics terms, isn't everything. Ball ammo can overpenetrate.

And as I type, I have a Kimber loaded with... well, Snap Caps... next to me!

I like the fact that the Kimber manual encourages you to cycle your weapon with dummy ammo to familarize; I think that's a good idea.

I'll take a $75 battery solution over anything else! I'm thinkin' a cell has gone bad. It can't be the alternator, because once it's jumped off, it runs fine. I made three stops today - one was 20 minutes, the next was 10 minutes and the last was 1 hour - off the jump off from my sister. If it was the alternator, wouldn't it have quit before then?

We get a new battery, all is well. If it messes up again, then we'll go from there. Yeesh. Hate this, going into winter.

Not entirely, the equation for mass energy transfer includes a time component. The faster a round undergoes negative acceleration the more of that kinetic energy is transfered directly. A hollow point stops faster, deliver the kinetic energy faster. Size matters but so does velocity, and how fast a round transfers the energy to the target.

286 karmic_inquisitor  Fri, Nov 14, 2008 10:25:40pm

Doing a refresher tour of the hate sites there are a few common threads -

1) A need to be accepted - there seems to be a strong need for affiliation and validation among the banned. So you have Nodrog and ChenZen accepted into a circle of comrades who would otherwise condemn them for their views and vice versa.

2) A profound need to be seen as the reasonable one - have yet to see a "I had it coming" or a "CJ is entitled to his rules." Instead you generally get a round condemnation of Charles as someone who runs a cult and the accusation that dissent is not permitted and that we are all of a single opinion. Kinda strange given the recent threads on abortion, social conservatism vs RINOs and whatnot.

3) A need to focus their angst at a person rather than the policies - the banning policies are only described in a context where they are seen as enforcing cult behavior.

4) An inability to let it go - some of these folks carry on for years and years and then cheer on anyone or anything that comes into conflict with LGF (current hero being Robert Spencer, with no mention of the substance of the disassociation - only trivialized as a linking / delinking spat).

I am by no means a psychologist and also understand that these observations are colored by my own perspective, but it seems you have some people who were very much "hooked" on LGF and can't let go. They sense an injustice in being banned where they don't seem to own the behavior that got them banned. Maybe a more qualified person could comment, but I don't see these folks coming to any closure or "agreeing to disagree" on some areas but moving forward together on others. It all seems very unhealthy.

Charles - I just read through the thread(s). I have not been here long enough to know the history behind some of the people recently banned. But it does seem to be more frequent of late. So my question is, are the reigns tightening for what passes for appropriate comment? I am asking because having checked out the site before signing on, I got a handle on your politics and world view. And frankly that is why I tuned in. I sensed that much of your philosophy stemmed from your absolute horror and disbelief at the unfolding spread of violence in the name of Jihad that was being woefully under reported in the media and world in general. And on that count, I would argue that this is one of the commonalities that bind most persons on this site. Other topics have been introduced by you and have taken some degree of prominence. Some of these issues I do not agree with you on. However, I have sensed that contrary opinions do not engender wrath leading to "banning". But, repeated pedantic ones might. We disagree on issues labeled as "religious right issues" and social conservatism and the role of these ideas in politics. We probably also disagree to a degree on the urgency of sounding the alarm bell on the issue of creationism being taught in schools (although I am not too far from your position especially given my recognition of how creeping Sharia is contaminating our institutions in this country and abroad.). I guess my question at the end of this long-winded bloviation is this: where is the line these days? I like the fact that I can make my points, albeit in a cogent and hopefully well-thought out way, but made nonetheless even if I am swimming against the tide. I bear no similarity with Cognito except that I sense not many people agree with a lot of my more conservative/culture of life perspectives. Are my views welcome or am I one frank comment away from becoming extinct (speaking of evolution...). Lastly, asked in sincerity because I like the site a lot.

My personal favorite is the .40. Terminal ballistics of a .45, handling of 9mm, plus a couple extra rounds in mag. Nothing against the big rounds, I love shooting 'em, but for practical purpose in my CC piece I've found the .40 to be a well balanced round.

Velocity is good when you want more penetration, like shooting at vehicles. Less velocity is good when you don't want the person behind the target, or on the other side of the wall dead. Hollowpoints promote expansion, and therefore less penetration on impact.

The 10 is an excellent round. And while I must say I have seen incredible shooting with the .45, including by some lizards, my experience is as yours. And this is a gun I shot since 8 years old. The .45 is a killer at under 75 yards, for sure. But to say it is accurate out of the box, with those sawed off sites and that blow back, and that long slide is wrong. The second shot except with the targeted gun is off.

To each his own. EXACTLY. I highly recommend, unless your collecting a variety of weapons. To head to a range that rents and try a variety of guns. Find the one that fits best and is the most comfortable to shoot. Terminal ballistics of a round is secondary to being able to put lead on target. In a primary defense weapon you need something that comes to hand easily, no need to adjust and think about the grip, and shoots comfortably.

Diameter no, the 10mm is a bit longer, more pressure and muzzle velocity. The FBI looked at but due to the size and recoil went with the .40.

.40 muzzle velocity is around 1200fps while the 10 is 1600fps.

re: #293 Occasional Reader

Cor Bon say they increase muzzle velocity in their hollow points due to a different powder load. I practice with cheap ammo I keep Cor bon in the gun. It may just be psych but they sell it well and make me feel better. I keep a P91 .40SW loaded with cor bon hollow points as my defense weapon. The higher velocity they sell is why I keep that in the emergency mag. Put enough through to feel comfortable with their feeding characteristics.

Gun Buying is complex
Pick the gun
Pick the caliber
Pick the ammo
They all equally influence the end effectiveness for the task you are trying to accomplish and this is the mix I picked for by the bed.

Started this post talking about just ammo and added stuff I know you already know but didn't want to delete.

I always thought the M1911 was the perfect Army handgun. It rode easy on the hip or shoulder holster. It could easily fit in an AWOL bag. It was incredibly easy to fire and hit what you were shooting at with little aiming. It had great knockdown power. I have never had one fail and mine went through mud and wading through rivers. And it can take a silencer that actually is quiet. Where is the downside?

Ok. Pilots couldn't handle it I guess, so they gave them the .38s. Now everyone has the Beretta?

Don't let folks scare you off the 9mm. Yes, it has terminal ballistics that are weaker than bigger rounds. But 2 in the 10 ring will stop 'em. If you are comfortable with the 9mm an put lead on target, don't worry too much about it.

nice. I read somewhere that S&W autoloader is not as reliable as the Glock, maybe just an opinion. Has yours ever jammed up on you? any truth to this?

I've never had a jam. I tried both the Glock 27 and the MP Compact. Glocks just don't fit my hand. I had to work at getting nice groups with the Glock, the MP they just happen. That was the main reason for my going with the S&W, my first choice was the H&K PS2000, but at another $350, just couldn't do it.

Which is why picking the gun that feels natural in your hand and that you can put most of the mag into the target when fast firing is more important than caliber. Hitting the target is what counts most.

re: #323 shanec99

I carried a 9mm for 4 or 5 years. Now, although I have a .45 at home, I carry a .38 S&W. But that's all about concealment. It's good to be able to shoot headshots on the range, but you never know how it's going to go in a fight. Aiming for center-of-mass training is what is recommended. You can get pretty shaky in a fight.

outstanding! thanks for the info. I think I'm sold. the polymer frame models also shave a couple hundred bucks off the price tag

re: #55 Bumr50

Check to see if the headlights, dome/interior lights still work even if the engine won't turn over. If you are getting only a 'clicking" sound but you have lights than most likely the starter. If the battery connection is loose or the battery is bad, you won't have headlights interior lights etc. nd you'll get the "click". A faulty alternator will drain the battery dead every time - not allow it to start here and there as you described. It takes driving at 60 miles per hour for 14 miles with no headlights, radio etc. to fully recharge most batteries. I head out for 7 miles at 60 (cables in the trunk) and 7 miles back. This always charges a dead battery (from leaving headlights on) nicely. I metion this because if you replace a belt and only drove 3 miles at 30 mph and back home, replaced the belt or something similarly simple, you still need to charge up the battery. Short trips at low RPMs, frequently starting and stopping will still leave you with a weak or dead battery !
So
1. If you have no power to he headlights and you just get a "click, click" I'd check the battery cable connections first, right at the terminal/posts.
2. If you get the above but also an intermittent "Grrr..." the next turn of the key and then you get a "click" again, its probably a faulty starter. They have contacts that can go bad - you "bump" around the contacts every time you turn the key. If it never begins to turn over, well, the starter may be dead completely. This can explain the reason why sometimes it starts, other times not - not the only reason though (the contacts here).
3. If you have power to the headlights but just hear a "click" (rather than a Gggrrr...) when you turn the key, probably the starter. If the belt was bad the alternator wouldn't be doing its job so no headlights either (or very weak lights) - same for a bad alternator - it wouldn't "get better" and start after a drive/stop for an hour as you describe. A bad altenator or loose belt just drives the battery in one direction - down...to... nothing.

You could have a "drain" on the battery - when the car sits overnight, the drain goes on long enough to kill the battery. After you jump it the next day and drive from here to there, the alternator is making up for the slight drain and that why it starts again after sitting for an hour.

**But ! 'Tis the season ! If you have weather like the northeast is having, this is the time of year you often find that your battery needs replacing ! The car sits out in below freezing temps over night. Once it warms up from the sun, temp hits the 40 -50's the car starts - no problem. Next morning its dead again ! Been there, done that more than I want to remember ! This is when people find out about their furnace too ! Also, if the car needs a tune up theres nothing like the colder weather to alert you ! This is when a part is "marginal" and on the way to "bad". Cars always run fine in the warm weather with marginal battery or plugs. They can be hell in the cold morning light though. Good luck. Just do the headlight/dome light test first though - it will point you in the right direction at least.

Its almost 4am here and I can't get this "Ayers" (spit) outta my head.
Think "Columbine". Think fat M.M. and his "Bowling for Columbine". Or Bevis and Butt Head a few weeks ago "plotting to kill BHO".
All 3 groups, the "Trench Coat Mafia", "The Weather Underground", and "Bevis & Butt Head" plotted to kill innocent people - people that were "guilty' of something in their eyes though. The power of the press is astonishing. It seems how the country en masse views these 3 groups and their deeds (the 3rd never actually did anything but "plot") is in the hands of the MSM. I'm sure any kid that hung around with Harris or Klebold were considered "creepy" and not someone you'd be seen talking to or driving around with and certainly not visiting at their home. The "Weather Underground" WERE the "Trench Coat Mafia" of the 60's/70's ! What the hell is the difference except Harris & Klebold et al were not as "visionary" - they only wanted to kill a few dozen, not millions ! The FBI heard them making plans no different than Harris/Klebold. They didn't like "jocks" and Ayers et al didn't like "authority figures". One used propane and guns, the other high explosives and guns. At least the former had the decency to end their lives and spare us the trial (I have to interject here - I feel horrible for the parents and I'm not nearly as pissed at these kids as I am Ayers). Beavis and Butt Head were headline news - they just talked ! So, the news makes nothing of the Obama association with Ayers and wife - it becomes "gaze" for the voting citizens ! What ? They (MSM) aren't making a big deal of it so it must not be a big deal ? I think the answer is "yes" that is exactly how happened ! If BHO was a known sometime/onetime "associate" of Harris/Klebold", what would people have to say then ? And they were nowhere near as bad as Ayers ! The last 2, without seeing the evidence, sounds like the weakest case of all. What if John McCain's son were to be friends with one of them ? I'm 100% sure that not one of my Lib BHO voting friends would have anything to do with me if they thought I had an association, no matter how minor -with a guy who committed manslaughter - once. If they found out I went over to a guys house that was just released from prison for manslaughter, having killed someone in a bar room brawl, that would be it !
I'd have a hard time even talking to another person that killed a man in the street. And yet this Ayers group did same and worse over and over again until they had to go "under ground". Pure speculation but I have no doubt they would have hooked up with ME terrorists and, at the very least, aided them in a 9/11 type attack. That was small potato's to the "vision' they had according to the FBI agent ! It has to all come down to how the MSM reacts - no thinking, no independent thought in the least. "They ain't sayin' it (MSM) so it must not be so". Think what can be perpetrated right under our noses, as long as the MSM doesn't report it, over the next 4 to 8 years ! Why don't these "sheeple" get it ? How can they not be bothered to draw these comparisons/conclusions themselves ? Even if it was shown that BHO never met the guy, you'd think the "outing" of Ayers alone would bring on an outcry - after all he is a freakin college professor ! If the Catholic Church has a few child molesters amongst the ordained the world goes bat shit (as we should) but, in a school were their kids are sent to learn, they find out through this story that Ayers is a "respected" prof. and nothing comes of it ? He gets an interview as his book is being distributed with the new "forward" by Ayers ? WTF ? i shouldn't have tried this at 4am - been up 22 hours now. time to end but I had to get this out of my system. Thank you for the space Charles, hope this isn't too embarrassing - I'm just too damn impetuous...always have been. Nite Crazy World !

Did a FIND on CHORDS and I guess they aren't that important anymore... No mention.

Some beautiful changes in Mr Jarrett's rendition and a few chords that were not in keeping with the rest but then, S*** happens... :)

It's way better than I could play!

The way he transposes and finds common notes through his altered changes is just incredible in this recording. It's from a DVD that's one of the greatest live recordings ever made: Tokyo Solo.

Listening to this piece reminded me of a quote about physicist Richard Feynman:

"There are lots of people who are too original for their own good, and had Feynman not been as smart as he was, I think he would have been too original for his own good."

That describes Keith. Extremely smart, extremely original, and not infrequently both at the same time. He is my favorite living musician.

Thanks for this video, Charles. Forget economics...if I can hear music like this, my life is rich.
