At least she's not wearing braids and a baseball cap in that one.
Not that there is anything wrong with braids and a baseball cap, just that it looks slightly less professional than the other photo.

I always seem to miss that thread change...(reprinted from last thread - thanks Charles, respectfully)
Charles - I just read through the thread(s). I have not been here long enough to know the history behind some of the people recently banned. But it does seem to be more frequent of late. So my question is, are the reigns tightening for what passes for appropriate comment? I am asking because having checked out the site before signing on, I got a handle on your politics and world view. And frankly that is why I tuned in. I sensed that much of your philosophy stemmed from your absolute horror and disbelief at the unfolding spread of violence in the name of Jihad that was being woefully under reported in the media and world in general. And on that count, I would argue that this is one of the commonalities that bind most persons on this site. Other topics have been introduced by you and have taken some degree of prominence. Some of these issues I do not agree with you on. However, I have sensed that contrary opinions do not engender wrath leading to "banning". But, repeated pedantic ones might. We disagree on issues labeled as "religious right issues" and social conservatism and the role of these ideas in politics. We probably also disagree to a degree on the urgency of sounding the alarm bell on the issue of creationism being taught in schools (although I am not too far from your position especially given my recognition of how creeping Sharia is contaminating our institutions in this country and abroad.). I guess my question at the end of this long-winded bloviation is this: where is the line these days? I like the fact that I can make my points, albeit in a cogent and hopefully well-thought out way, but made nonetheless even if I am swimming against the tide. I bear no similarity with Cognito except that I sense not many people agree with a lot of my more conservative/culture of life perspectives. Are my views welcome or am I one frank comment away from becoming extinct (speaking of evolution...). Lastly, asked in sincerity because I like the site a lot.

Since it is an open thread ...
One of the collective complaints of the banned is that the banning drive a uniformity of opinion.
It has been my experience here (for something like 5 years) that a lot of the banned tended to act like enforcers and tended to lead their own little clicks who would harp on dissenters. IIRC, these sorts of groups held court in comments during certain hours of the day such that, if you wanted to have an intelligent conversation, you'd log in in the "off hours". It got to where LGF had ideological shifts - not shifts of opinion, but different ideologies would hold court at different 8 hour shifts.
Anyway - I have seen the board get a little less mired in group think lately. Of course, the election being over and having lost plays a big part. But in 2006 there were not the sorts of discussions we are having now because the tone then was more intimidating, IMO. There was no point in posting an unconventional idea if you were going to get 100 people squashing you with the party platform, even if it lost (I remember a truly disturbing exchange I had with BabbaZee which ultimately boiled down to me being wrong despite my arguments because Biblical literalists are always right, even in matters not related to the Bible).
The flip side of all this is that, because this isn't Lord of the Flies anymore, some don't find it as much fun. Can't please everyone, I suppose.

Well, they ~do~ make it pretty damn obvious what they want. As a rule cats are usually self-maintaining fur bearing critters, but when they want something, they want it now.

I am not afraid of being able to make my points but it seems lately, the very existence of an oppositional idea causes consternation and after that, well... perhaps baning. Having said that, I completely get how things are here and how they have been. It is my sense however lately that their is more of a hair trigger to trounce ideas that are not conforming to either Charles and/or the majority. I can take the debating even when it is acrimonious, but as I said, the line demarking the water's edge seems a bit blurry these days. Frankly, how I put it in my previous post lays out the way I feel.

But none of that is anywhere near as important as those awful pants. Perhaps I've let my hatred of pleated pants on men go too far. It's like when you are thinking about buying a certain type of car and all of a sudden you see it everywhere. I start thinking about how unflattering pleated pants are and it's all I can see when they're in the room.

re: #10 wright1
In my 5 or so years here, Charles has been consistent in allowing dissent. There are banned persons that will scream foul at that last statement. Nodrog and ChenZen live an afterlife of self adulation on the supposition that they were banned for being just too damned effective in advancing their arguments. But that is the perspective (and behavior) you'd expect from those who use the web to argue as sport, have inflated self opinions and don't argue fairly (such as refusing to concede any point where they have been proven wrong) in the process. So it isn't just pedantic tone, it also comes down to simply arguing dishonestly.
Now I have to be honest in saying that arguing dishonestly is not always banned - there are plenty here that aren't familiar with formal debate and don't distinguish naked assertions, opinion and fact from each other. They may post their take on something and it may not pass the entry exam for the Oxford debating society, but no one challenges them on it. It simply sits as an orphaned comment. Nothing wrong with that - everyone is entitled to an opinion (even malformed opinion). And if it turns out to be an opinion that supports consensus, who is going to be a prick and say "I agree with you, but your argument is flawed"?
But such people will often attract predators - folks who know their way around debate and will then pick on someone and then shift the argument or the standard of support to simply irritate the other into frustration and some indefensible outburst. Cognito liked doing that by insisting people post "facts" (wherein some might just do that, and he'd sometimes shift the standard of "fact" based on his expertise as a journalist - and he was playing that game with Jindal's acknowledged exorcism when he got banned).
ChenZen and Nodrog (to varying degrees) would do much the same more clumsily in that they'd continually blur assertion and fact and the shift arguments, all sprinkled with insults about how their interlocutors were morally inferior beings.
As for the pantheon of banned folks who "fit the mold" remember that was a self reinforcing mold which started to color public opinion of Charles himself. When this started out, Charles idealistically followed a Laisez Faire policy on comments. You had to pretty much post a credible death threat to get banned, and (prior to registration) a ban didn't mean anything. So the idea that Mr Johnson wants to run a Jonestown like cult here is a bit wild to me having seen what looked more like a yeast culture in the comment section. Those who started to feel emboldened by those around them (as happens in mobs) and would express over-the-top desires to kill large groups of people or kill particular people were initially tolerated. That started to bite Charles in the ass as MSM columnists started harshing the site as an "online Nuremberg Rally" and whatnot. CAIR even started filing complaints with the FBI. Regardless of why, Charles changed the policy and has enforced it since. That banning policy led to the hate sites, which led to more bannings as people tried to play both sides. As the more rabid ideologues got weeded out, they fed more animus and now Charles has to sniff out "friend or foe." In all, it sucks to be Charles Johnson having to put up with the crap, and I think his frustration is showing itself in less patience for ass holes.
Point is, I think you could post any argument "against the grain" relative to a thread that you are honestly willing to support and are prepared to argue fairly. If you argue "with the grain" the standards are lower simply because such arguments don't stand out that much.
As for what Charles posts on, this is just a dude's blog. Photo of a cat? Blog post. New shifter for bike? Blog post. Fatwa against mini skirts? Blog post.
Just remember - If you go to a friend's house and don't like the curtains, compliment them on their kitchen

OK - now how about explaining the Braille on those drive-up ATMs?
Drive-up ATM buttons are marked with braille because federal regulations require it. To be specific, section 4.34.4 of the ADA Accessibility Guidelines for Buildings and Facilities (Appendix to Part 1191, 36 CFR Chapter XI, issued pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990) says, "Instructions and all information for use [of an automated teller machine] shall be made accessible to and independently usable by persons with vision impairments."

that way the company only has to make one machine for drive-ups and walk-ups; instead of two different face plates.
Now explain why a restaurant mens room has its sign in brail? I asked a manager about that one time and he told me that an employee would tell them where the door and sign was. I asked why couldn't the employee just tell the blind guy which was the male and female.

re: #42 wright1
I am not afraid of being able to make my points but it seems lately, the very existence of an oppositional idea causes consternation and after that, well... perhaps baning. Having said that, I completely get how things are here and how they have been. It is my sense however lately that their is more of a hair trigger to trounce ideas that are not conforming to either Charles and/or the majority. I can take the debating even when it is acrimonious, but as I said, the line demarking the water's edge seems a bit blurry these days. Frankly, how I put it in my previous post lays out the way I feel.
Sorry for the delay - I was answering emails.
Clearly, wright1, you didn't go back and read the thread as I suggested, otherwise you wouldn't be making that statement. I say this as someone who likes mama winger, and joked with her frequently on this forum. Charles noted that she was trashing him on another blog, and was offended by that. Even so, he allowed her to continue to post here. I don't know what went on at the other blog, but if I witnessed it, I would have certainly said something to her about it. I consider her a friend, as I do most of you with whom I communicate with on a near daily basis.
And no, there is not a "hair-trigger" here as to what Charles or the rest of us will accept as acceptable commentary, other than calls for violence or bigotry. If you state something that is bullshit, someone more knowledgeable will call your ass on it. Back up what you say with links to legitimate sources and you'll be just fine. If you're going to play with nut-job conspiracy theories about Obama's alleged muslim heritage, or some bogus issue about his birth certificate (and persist so) you'll be warned, warned, then blocked.
In my mind, no one "played" this blog better than Cognito. I remember when he first came on the scene - fully five months after he originally registered. He was a contrarian from the start, but learned to temper his comments - even make "sympathetic" commentary - in order to stick around and win friends. I saw through his bullshit completely, and was even somewhat frustrated as Charles came close to banning him a couple times, but relented. I always thought he was always an unfaithful debate partner, but respected Charles' decision to keep him around (dude even got a hat tip).
I know you've probably signed off, but as I think about your post, and reasons you may have ignored my suggestion to go back and read through the shuttle thread, I'm growing skeptical of your motivation.
Anyway, it's 2:00 am here, and I must be going. Feel free to catch me on another thread if you wish to continue this conversation.

Still, on the day it happened, I was celebrating something else at a bar, so, this pomegranate margarita's for you Charles. Strange, I feel a bit like Wile E. Coyote, when he finally caught the Road Runner and waved the sign that said "what do I do now?" Oh well, it's still like Christmas in November.
I would like to put in a good word for Mama Winger, who is a patriot and a mother of patriots, who worked so hard to try to stop Mr. Obama's election in the face of terrible odds. She's a good person, and I always enjoyed her posts. Still, Charles has an absolute right to moderate his posts however he sees fit, and I'm sure mama winger will do fine wherever she ends up.

I did not know Mama winger had been banned before and was bad mouthing Charles on other blogs. I can see why he would be angry. As for Song and dance man, he is always over the top and he is quite religious (Charles is the opposite).
My sense is that now the election is over their will be retailiation against those who supported McCain – as Charles did.
There is a group of hostile websites that watches Lgf and cherry pick posts to show that Lgf is a “hate site.”
I suspect that Charles is under pressure to clean up some of offensive posts. If no clean up occurs, I suspect that Obama’s communication consulting professionals with attack Lgf at every turn.
Charles is located one of the most heavily moonbat populated areas. I can see him being an easy target for retailiation – they did it to Joe The Plumber. Now, that is just my uninformed speculation (I am not up on things and I rarely post).

re: #195 Outrider
now that would be nice. Fishing? Get the limit.
Drunks out in the alleyway creating noisy problem? Chuck a grenade down the fire escape-problem solved.
Drunken argument next door? In goes the grenade-out goes the problems.
Smoke grenades would be fun to fool with also-company picnic getting boring? Pop purple and land a news chopper (whose pilot flashed back) in the middle of the 3-legged race. Boring sales meeting? Pop a red and escape under cover.
possibilities abound.
Smoke and Pyro
White Smoke---Covering/Screening only
Yellow Smoke---Designated target (Fire at will)
Purple Smoke---All after is sarcastic
Green Smoke---Kook Identifed
White Star Cluster---All Clear
Yellow Star Cluster---Cease-fire
Red Star Cluster---Danger
Some Examples:
Red says something smart and instead of "ducking," pops white smoke and disengages.
Anyone needing assistance might designate a post (or a thread in the subject line) with yellow smoke.
Prior to typing a sarcastic remark, "pop purple smoke." When removing tounge from cheek, send up a White Star Cluster.
Green star clusters would probaly be most effective for the person on SGT Casey's duty roster with an addition to a subject line.
Yellow star clusters used to designate a friendly under fire or to initiate compromise under a misunderstanding.
Red star custer, any kind of warning.

Actually, I was shown a used German police-issue SIG 9mm earlier today. Pretty good deal, but I was less than impressed with the sorta wimpy 8-round stick magazine (looked like the grip could've easily accomodated a staggered mag that squoze in a dozen rounds- or at least 8 rounds of something a little more powerful a-la .40S&W or .45ACP.
But then I got to thinking- isn't the IDF gonna retire their Jericho 9mm in favor of the newer, polymer Barak 9mm? (Yes- the only thing named 'Barak' that the Israelis can depend on)...
It really would be a shame if those otherwise-serviceable Jerichos were melted down into scrap metal. I'm hoping that some IDF-surplus ones might be able to find their way over here...

that said, there is a point where someone is just being obtuse or is out to create friction.; in which point they are a liability and just drag things down.
Then, the author does have his own self interests. If racist or hateful stuff is routinely posted, the author gets a bad reputation and reputable people don't come to the site. It quickly turns into chaos, with no benefits derived from coming there.

And keep the secret feline rule
To NEVER tell a human that
The world is really ruled by CATS!

I've been on wide open blogs and news groups where the moonbats are allowed to congregate. Sooner or later, in the name of fair and open dialogue, they end up pushing out everyone else. If they ever get in a position to do so, they kick everyone off who doesn't accept their ideological twists and turns.
I'm here because this blog is a proven quantity - this Charles fellow has already caught none other than Dan Rather of CBS out in a Big Lie campaign, and has clipped Reuters more than once - and thus far I rather like the policing that's been done here as well. This membership is a two-way street; if I didn't like what is going on here, I could always go elsewhere. Instead I remain, as clearly do many others.
Others might feel differently, but I for one am glad the riff-raff is kept out. There are plenty of places elsewhere that I can get the opinions of Left-wing fascists, often without any contrary interference allowed whatsoever. So I hope this remains a twit zone for at least the near future.

Audit: Sharpton campaign owes US nearly $500,000
Federal auditors have concluded the Rev. Al Sharpton's 2004 campaign owes the government nearly $500,000 for illegal donations and other financial improprieties. Sharpton has been feuding with the Federal Election Commission for years over his accounting in his failed run for president, for which he received $100,000 in so-called government matching funds that authorities later concluded he did not deserve because he hadn't followed campaign laws.

Morning Lizards a joke to start your Sat. morning.
A lawyer married a woman who had previously divorced ten husbands.
On their wedding night, she told her new husband, "Please be gentle, I'm still a virgin."
"What?" said the puzzled groom.
"How can that be if you've been married ten times?"
"Well, Husband #1 was a sales representative: he kept telling me how great it was going to be.
Husband #2 was in software services: he was never really sure how it was supposed to function, but he said he'd look into it and get back to me.
Husband #3 was from field services: he said everything checked out diagnostically but he just couldn't get the system up.
Husband #4 was in telemarketing: even though he knew he had the order, he didn't know when he would be able to deliver.
Husband #5 was an engineer: he understood the basic process but wanted three years to research, implement, and design a new state-of-the-art method.

Motto: Momma loves morals and Papa loves cats. - Susy Clemens (daughter of Mark Twain)
A cat is more intelligent than people believe, and can be taught any crime. - Mark Twain who was a passionate lover of cats...
Next to a wife whom I idolise, give me a cat - an old cat, with kittens. - Mark Twain in a letter to Olivia Clemens
One of the most striking differences between a cat and a lie is that a cat has only nine lives.
A home without a cat, and a well-fed, well-petted and properly revered cat, may be a perfect home, perhaps; but how can it prove its title?
By what right has the dog come to be regarded as a noble animal? The more brutal and cruel and unjust you are to him the more your fawning and adoring slave he becomes; whereas, if you shamefully misuse a cat once she will always maintain a dignified reserve toward you afterward - you will never get her full confidence again.
Ignorant people think it's the noise which fighting cats make that is so aggravating, but it ain't so; it's the sickening grammar they use.
Never try to teach a cat to sing. It wastes your time, and it annoys the cat.
The cat, having sat upon a hot stove lid, will not sit upon a hot stove lid again. Nor upon a cold stove lid.
The man who carries a cat by the tail learns something that can be learned in no other way.

Chester and Earl are going hunting. Chester says to Earl, "I'll send my dog out to see if there are any ducks out in the pond. If there aren't any ducks out there, I'm not going hunting."
So he sends the dog out to the pond. The dog comes back and barks twice. Chester says, "Well I'm not going to go out. He only saw two ducks out there."
Earl says, "You're going to take the dog's barks for the truth?" Earl doesn't believe it, so he goes to look for himself. When he gets back he says, "I don't believe it where did you get that dog? There really are only two ducks out there!"
Chester says, "Well, I got him from the breeder up the road. If you want, you can get one from him, too."
So Earl goes to the breeder and says he wants a dog like the one his friend Chester has. The breeder obliges and Earl brings the dog home, tells it to go out and look for ducks. Minutes later the dog returns with a stick in it's mouth and starts humping Earl's leg.
Outraged, Earl takes the dog back to the breeder and says, "This dog is a fraud. I want my money back!"
The breeder asks Earl what the dog did. So Earl tells him that when he sent the dog out to look for ducks, it came back with a stick in its mouth and started humping his leg.
The breeder says, "Earl, all he was trying to tell you was that there are more f**king ducks out there than you can shake a stick at!"

Steffan,
I meant I wasn't even close. ;-)
--------------------------------------
Raining AGAIN! :-( And the leaves are falling in order of color; first yellow, now orange, and the red next week.
There's a thunder storm 'a brewin'
And the day is turning gray
There ain't much to say about the weather
The shower stall is leakin'
And the ceiling's fallin' in
And I'm getting twenty bills to every letterI've got to move myself out to the country
I'm lookin' out for any place at all
I'm gonna spend another fall in PhiladelphiaA roving band of youths beat up on Johnny
Everybody's gettin' richer sellin' that dope
Say, the stolen bikes are gathering by the thousands
Along with seven million people without a hopeI guess I have to face the fact as real
I think I feel my back up against the wall
I'm gonna spend another fall in Philadelphia--- Hall & Oates, Fall in Philadelphia, 1972
Of all the gazillion songs on YouTube, this one's not there. :-(
Good day, ALL!™

Can't tell you how often that happens.....
I have no weather complaints. :)
The fun part is that at my sister's place in the central part of San Jacinto CA, the wind was strong enough to nearly sweep you off your feet -- strong gale force on the Beaufort scale. Half a mile south of that, there was a fitful breeze, hardly enough to notice. Near my place in Hemet, there was no breeze at all.

We used to have a joke in our family that listening to Grandma was like listening the cat, if it could talk.
Coincidentally, my cat this morning issued THE MOST PERFECTLY ARTICULATED "meow" that I have ever heard not enunciated by a human. Just thought I'd mention that.

that said, there is a point where someone is just being obtuse or is out to create friction.; in which point they are a liability and just drag things down.
Then, the author does have his own self interests. If racist or hateful stuff is routinely posted, the author gets a bad reputation and reputable people don't come to the site. It quickly turns into chaos, with no benefits derived from coming there.
You've just articulated the "broken windows" theory of policing that worked so well for NYC. But unlike Mayor Giuliani, our host has an understandably stronger concern that the community here reflects personally on him, especially where he's been vocal in criticizing others for their unsavory associations (i.e. Robert Spencer with European "blood and soil" nationalists, Barack 0bama with well... nearly everyone).
So far as I know, there's never been an occasion where he's felt the need to cloak a commenter with such an extensive history on the site before (usually it's just trolls with less than several dozen comments). But as jaunte alluded to, there's no reason to expect anyone to want to wade through that history separating the wheat from the chaff.
But there's another sort of cloaked history here to consider. Many (including myself) who've been participants here for a long time have no idea which commenters have said what on other sites, one, because we don't read those sites (for the very reasons you articulate above), and two, when the Big Lizard has chosen to give someone a second chance he's been discreet about it. Sometimes he'll post about stuff like that, more often not. No doubt there's a lot of behind the scenes drama and angst that only occasionally bubbles to the surface, and which would make LGF rather dull self-referential reading if it did so all the time. If our host talked about himself as much as Rush Limbaugh does (hi, Rush!), LGF would have a decidedly different tone, to be sure, and wouldn't be nearly so effective.

Comments that aren't just little silly things (like the things that I post) slow down a busy thread. They downright paralyze a slow one.

Yes, some of it is being caused by enviro whacko thinking. Controlled burns sometimes stop being controlled all on their own, and so would probably not be used in populated areas, but they could use them in other areas, but in response to environmental concerns, they don't use them as much as they could.
Fire is a natural forest "cleaning" process to get rid of all the stuff that's fallen and died. If you don't want these kinds of fires, you've gotta clear the forest some other way. But many environmental folks don't like that idea.

Got into a show (local/professional) right out of high school. Was going to be the next Gordon MacRae (my style/voice was/is similar). Found out that my talent while comparable to the NY cast that was with me, was not any better.
Then looked around and realized that this NY cast was starving, and began thinking of a job where I could get fat. (I was also an 18 year old homophobe in a cast with 25 men, two of which were straight. I was one of them).

It's only natural. I've heard the Beatles song hundreds of times and only watched Singin in the Rain maybe 3 times.
In my defense, I actually do realize there were people making "music" before the Beatles. (Some of them may actually have been as good, but I'm not sure.) John Lennon did not put strings on a piece of wood and create the guitar, after all.

Good morning, Lizards.
The answer is, "generally, yes". Ecology groups oppose clear-cutting and cleaning up thrash (the forester's term for fallen limbs, etc.) because they believe it (a) encourages logging, which they oppose and (b) changes the "natural environment". Well, yes, it does (b), but it also (c) reduces the potential for catastrophic wildfires like this, especially in areas with the sort of hot, dry climate which encourages them- like southern California. (Trivia fact; the overwhelming majority of such fires are weather related, usually started by lightning strikes. Nothing sets dried thrash off faster than several megavolts of DC electricity heating it to over 1000 degrees Centigrade in an eyeblink.)
Environmentalists of the political type value "wildness" above all else. If you tell them that cleaning up the forest bed will prevent fires, they accuse you of trying to "civilize" the forest primeval. If you try to cut fire roads, you will be hit with a court order preventing you from "encouraging logging".
And if you point out that wildfires destroy peoples' homes, they will retort that "they had no business building them there, anyway."
The modern environmentalist movement has strayed far from the days of Theodore Roosevelt and Ernest Thompson Seton. It is now more inclined toward the mystical views of Henry David Thoreau and John Muir. Both of whom had a low opinion of humanity and wished fervently for a "return to the wild"- while living comfortably in the bosom of the Victorian society they affected to despise. When Thoreau wrote On Walden Pond, in which he rails against "Man's civilization", he neglected to mention that he was living about a mile from the city limits and had the local grocery delivering three days a week, and the milkman coming by every day.
Modern environmentalists want all their comforts, but expect civilization to deliver them out of nowhere. I suppose they think food, clothing, etc., should come out of a Star Trek; The Next Generation-style fabricator widget that works on transporter technology. (But since they also oppose any power source but Wind and Sun, what will they power it with?)
Their hypocrisy is only exceeded by their ignorance- and their utter and complete contempt for the rest of humanity.
/just IMHO
cheers

Bush Backs Plan to Release $25B Loan to Automakers
The White House on Friday threw its support behind a plan to speed release of $25 billion in existing loans to the Big Three automakers but rejected a Democratic proposal to use money from a financial bailout to help the troubled industry.
The $700 billion financial rescue package was never intended to help automakers and shouldn't be now, White House spokeswoman Dana Perino told The Associated Press. But since Democratic leaders in Congress are pressing forward with a proposal to carve out a piece of its for the auto industry, she said the White House has decided to pursue a different approach: accelerating the availability of federal loans Congress first approved in September.
Those loans were approved to help automakers build more fuel-efficient vehicles and become more competitive companies in the global marketplace. The administration now supports allowing the loans to be released more quickly than the original legislation prescribed and to be used for more urgent purposes as the companies struggle to stay afloat.
"Democrats are choosing a path that would only lead to partisan gridlock," she said. "We are now actively calling on Congress to amend the loan program."
This is a big mistake.
They are calling them 'loans" now, but you watch. After Obama takes office these will quietly be changed to be gifts.
And then we will be subsidizing the auto industry ongoing.
The auto makers will have no reason to change and provide a more competitive product. And what we will have done is hooked the auto workers union up to the taxpayer checkbook.

Look at this bullsh*t from Obama big shot Robert Reich, the economist. He wants the government to have utter control to manage the failure of GM. The last thing in the world he wants is for the procedure to go through bankruptcy in a normal way. No, that would protect GM from government meddling. He wants the government to manage it.
The headline sounds like he wants to tough it out with the union to get them to take the painful wage cuts the market unfortunately requires. But that's not what he really wants. He really wants to play political games to allow the union to maintain supremacy, under government supervision, in telling GM how to function.
[Link: www.bloomberg.com...]
Obama Adviser Says Auto Workers Should Take Pay Cuts in Bailout
Nov. 14 (Bloomberg) -- An economic adviser to President- elect Barack Obama advocates wage and benefit cuts for auto industry workers and executives as part of any government bailout of the industry.``In exchange for government aid, the Big Three's creditors, shareholders and executives should be required to accept losses as large as they'd endure under Chapter 11'' bankruptcy protection, economist and Obama adviser Robert Reich wrote on his Web site this week. ``And the UAW should agree to some across- the-board wage and benefit cuts,'' he added, referring to the United Auto Workers union.
Major auto-parts suppliers also should eventually adhere to the same conditions, wrote Reich, a former labor secretary under President Bill Clinton.
He wants to tell shareholders and executives what to do. He wants to extend government dictate beyond GM to the parts suppliers. He wants to put major elements of the economy under government control.
He wants to rule.
