Video: The Future

Video | Sat, Nov 15, 2008 at 3:48:33 pm PST

This isn’t an official video for Future from Todd Rundgren’s Liars, but the vintage film clips from the 1964 World’s Fair in New York’s borough of Queens work perfectly with the song. Nostalgia for the future.

Robert Moses's last gasp, and his excuse to building a beautiful park in Flushing, Queens. A bit of trivia: the original United Nations building was located next to the Unisphere, and is now the Queens County Museum.

We were on home leave to the U.S. that year and went to the World's Fair. We arrived in New York on the "Maasdam" - sailed out of England, IIRC.

And here I thought all the hate was supposed to disappear when The One was elected.

Swastika painted on sign at Newton temple

NEWTON -- Someone spray-painted a swastika on the sign at a Newton temple Friday night or early this morning.

Rabbi Eric Gurvis of Temple Shalom said a number of teenagers and their parents attending a ceremony today noticed it, prompting him to scrap his planned comments and condemn it from the pupit. He also talked about the incident with members of a prayer group of about 40 people.

"There is a collective sense at a troubled time that we need to be optimistic and try to make things better," he said, paraphrasing his remarks. "Something like this reminds you how much more there is to do, and on how many fronts."

Gurvis, in his 10th year as rabbi at the temple, which is on Temple Street in the West Newton area, said there had been no similar problems during his tenure. The incident took place on the anniversary weekend of the Kristallnacht pogroms in Nazi Germany that marked the begining of the Holocaust.

Newton Police did not return phone calls this afternoon, but police could be seen patrolling the area frequently.

I hope they catch the f*ckers.

When I was in HS, I recall reading about a future with electricity too cheap to meter, Plutonium-powered SCUBA propulsion backpacks, and tires that would probably outlast the body, engine and drivetrain of your automobile. Ok, maybe we got that last one.

Some of those "long-gone attractions" weren't there yet last time I visited, which must have been in the 70's. I lived about 5 miles away and heard the fireworks every night in the summer. From the Wa-Po of all places....

5 Myths About an Election of Mythic Proportions

5. McCain made a huge mistake in picking Sarah Palin.

No subject is more likely to break up a dinner party early than the Alaska governor McCain chose as his running mate. Everyone not only has an opinion about her qualifications (or lack thereof) but also feels it necessary to share those opinions with anyone within shouting range.

Love her or loathe her, the data appear somewhere close to conclusive that Palin did little to help -- and, in fact, did some to hurt -- McCain's attempts to reach out to independents and Democrats. But just because Palin doesn't appear to have helped McCain move to the middle doesn't mean that picking her was the wrong move.

Remember where McCain found himself this past summer. He had won the Republican nomination, but the GOP base clearly felt little buy-in into his campaign. A slew of national polls reflected that energy gap, with Democrats revved up about the election and their candidate and Republicans somewhere between tepid and glum.

Enter Palin, who was embraced with a bear hug by the party's conservative base. All of a sudden, cultural conservatives were thrilled at the chance to put "one of their own" in the White House. In fact, of the 60 percent of voters who told exit pollsters that McCain's choice of Palin was a "factor" in their final decision, the Arizona senator won 56 percent to 43 percent.

For skittish conservatives looking for more evidence that McCain understood their needs and concerns, Palin did the trick. It's hard to imagine conservatives rallying to McCain -- even to the relatively limited extent that they did -- without Palin on the ticket. And without the base, McCain's loss could have been far worse.

The data on the youth and black vote is also very interesting indeed....

Sweet. Now I have to find some more of this guy. I've seen his name for 10+ years, never bothered to listen. I like it.

Here's what I was browsing yesterday...check these tall buildings out. Most are in Dubai (or will be), some are outlandish, to say the least. Cool site, too.

HAWT action: tall buildings

After seeing these, I used Google Earth (MS maps wasn't working yesterday) and zoomed into the coast of Dubai, N of Abu Dhabi...it's un-frikkin-believable what oil can build. Zoom way in and check out the Palm islands being built for the uber-wealthy. Or just go here and prepare your mind for boggling.

Then I thought...will this power-that-is allow this to enter production, ever?!?

Hyperion Power Generation

I hope these folks have some hefty bodyguards, and some hefty lawyers. The technological futureworld that is Dubai cannot (I think) withstand a loss of revenue, the likes of which a mini-nuke plant would create. From the site:

Hyperion Power Generation, Inc. (HPG) was formed to bring to market the unique Hyperion (formerly Comstar) small, modular, non-weapons grade nuclear power reactor invented by Dr. Otis “Pete” Peterson at the United States’ famed Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in New Mexico. Through the commercialization program at LANL’s Technology Transfer Division, HPG was awarded the exclusive license to utilize the intellectual property and develop a product that will benefit the U.S. economy and global society as a whole.

Just go look at those buildings. Holy moly. Been waiting for an appropriate thread to post these thoughts. I found the HPG site through the HAWT action site, as well.

Now Maui would be great! Here we were dressed up in suits and heels with our heavy winter coats, stuck in Phoenix where it was 100 degrees! Fortunately we each brought an extra set of undies and our toiletries in our carry-on bags. It was dreadful. I felt like we were living in a Chevy Chase "Vacation" movie. LOL

Was underwhelmed.

I went to the one in Knoxville, TN. That was in the 80s, but I don't remember the exact year. It was great for us, b/c a relative was on the Board, some kind of big-wig, and we never had to stand in line the entire time... I learned some new cuss-words on that trip. LOL!

Florida Gulf Coast sand is better, like baby powder- and I've been to Destin many times and love it also- but Maui is gorgeous.

Driving the Road to Hana is awesome (and scary!), we pulled off the road several times and walked a bit to find hidden waterfalls. Gorgeous.

Ford had a prototype of a futuristic city, and you drove thru it in their new concept car (which was mounted on a monorail type pulley system you really didn't actually drive the car),a little convertible called the Mustang. I now own a 1964 1/2 Mustang convertible, one of the first one's built. life's a funny circle sometimes.

I'd like to find a the cartoon I saw when I was a kid, sort of a spoof on the World's Fair. There were a few, IIRC. One was about future cars, one about appliances, houses, etc. I think it ran on Tom & Jerry, so it would have been MGM, and it was a hoot. The cartoon was narrarated in that 60s style, like a showcase. It could have been Hanna-Barbera, for all I know.

The gist of what I had read about him:
Random "music" sounded like poop. Random art looks like poop. Static on a TV is almost random, and, as art, looks like poop.

The earth, the universe...are beautiful to behold. As is Bach to the ear. As is Matisse. Good points, though, I know...un-scientific. Randomness is not pretty, created-ness is.

In the field of mycology, randomness gets one dead, quick.

Welcome to the Barack Hussein Obama Presidential Library! (We aren't shy of using his middle name any more!)

[Link: img186.imageshack.us...]

As you approach the Library, you are immediately blinded by the sun-like radiance emanating from His Eminence's mighty gold-plated statue, which is approximately ten feet taller than the Statue of Liberty (before it was destroyed in the tragedy of 2011). You can pause to read the inscription by Maya Angelou projected on the base: "By the rainbow's pulse, the sun of a new dawn rises upon the land, the indigo giant arises, the oceans fall, heed His call, O citizen of the world!"

Not to be outdone, the gleaming marble of the massive Main Hall (the Temple of Obama) now greets your eyes. White fluted columns support it. You mount the 57 steps and enter the citadel. What will greet you there? It changes day to day. A Code Pink/Breasts Not Bombs dance? A UN child choir concert? An Obama film festival? But always you will behold the Great Seal of Obama upon the marble floor, the permanent display of Revolutionary art, and ongoing services in the Worship Hall (you may have to visit the Secondary Worship Hall, as the Muslim worshipers have forced almost all infidels out of the main sanctuary).

Going on, you enter "The Bus," which pays tribute to the many influences on Obama's life. In this long building are halls for Frank Marshall Davis, Saul Alinsky, ACORN, the Reverend Wright, Louis Farrakhan, Father Phleger, Bill Ayers, Rashid Khalidi, and many others.

The Bus passes over the Meditation Gardens and the huge Meditation Pools. Stop, enjoy a latte, and listen to the gently lapping waters and flowing fountains as you breathe in the scents of the 100% organic gardens. For $50 you can rent a paddle-boat.

Off by itself across the South Pool is the Hall of Sealed Records. You can't go there. All potentially incriminating stuff from Obama's past and his years in the White House is in there under lock and key, until the last of his political enemies who might dare attempt to stain his glorious legacy is eliminated. Some particularly sensitive material has already been shredded and atomized.

We hope you've enjoyed your visit. Please visit the gift shop back in the main hall and pick up your Obama booty and signed copies of his biographies (purchase several of each). You can also get your copy of 6,785 page Global Constitution, to which Obama was the first signatory!

re: #117 Spider Mensch

I was at the 64 worlds fair. I was 3 1/2 years old. I do remember one thing.

Circle, indeed.
I remember a few things about the fair--feeling lucky to be allowed to go with my older siblings, the crowds, the blacklight tunnel making our clothes glow, sitting at the fountain by the globe wishing I could take off my shoes and dip my aching feet. The excitement of thinking about the future.
And now I live in Seattle. The future looks a bit different from this vantage point.

I was there at the '64 worlds fair. I got lost and security rescued me and returned me to my family. When my mother heard my name being announced over the public address system by security, she was pissed!

Hey! I was captivated by an exhibit when my family walked away, without telling me. It wasn't my fault!

See what you started Charles!

277 harry catbox  Sun, Nov 16, 2008 12:13:52am

Great post Charles. The 1964 world's fair was the highlight of my childhood and this triggers many memories. It was bicycling distance from my neighborhood. I will never forget the sights and sounds, even the smells. My cousin had a job helping to close it down and we were both sad it was ending. I asked my Dad when it would come back and he said in twenty five years. The next year I told him, "Only twenty four years until the fair comes back!". Alas, it never has, but many of the structures are still there and as a teenager i trespassed and explored them all.

Unfortunately, I think the threat of terrorism in New York may prevent it from ever happening again.
