Unseasonably warm here in the Bay Area. Like a summer day, but not as long. I guess it's a last gasp of our "Indian Summer" before the cold and wet weather begins in earnest.

15 kynna  Sat, Nov 15, 2008 5:04:47pm

The sunset tonight is absolutely gorgeous. If I didn't know the cause of that beauty was multiple wild fires, I'd love it.

We were driving toward the sunset and it's about the first time we've ever been able to look straight at it because it was so filtered.

48 razorbacker  Sat, Nov 15, 2008 5:14:12pm

Alllrighty then.

Local business owner doesn't like the election results. Lowers American flag, substitutes Confederate flag. Stuff ensues.

Confederate flag raises debate in community.

"On election night, we lowered Old Glory from our flag pole because we are no longer the land of the free and the home of the brave (except for our military)," the letter stated. "The sound principals for which Old Glory stood have been abandoned. We raised the rebel flag of the Old South in protest. Since political correctness forces people into a limited frame of reference, we wish to say this loud and clear, this was not about race. We resent having a Marxist in the White House no matter color he is. If Mr. Obama had tried to enter the White House as an ordinary citizen, he would not qualify for a security clearance because of his past associations. We decided if Obama can refuse to properly salute the flag and his buddy, Bill Ayers, could stand on the American flag in a trash-filled alley, then we could take Old Glory down in honor and respect.

"We are angry with a biased, agenda-driven media. We are angry that for the past eight years President Bush and the Republican Party have been blamed by the Democrats and their cohorts in the media for the incomplete and irresponsible way that the group A.C.O.R.N. let down potential voters in the state of Florida in 2000. A.C.O.R.N. has used our tax dollars to carry out, contrary to the law, a partisan "get out the vote" effort of scandalous proportions. The other arm of this nefarious organization bullies and harasses banks and lending institutions to make the risky loans that have jeopardized our nation's financial security. We are outraged that the Democrats, who portray themselves as the great defenders of the night to vote, did not feel compelled to ensure the rights of our military to be guaranteed their full privileges during the election.

"Old Glory is still displayed on our American owned and operated sign. So far, the response from our clientele has been supportive and positive."

T'aint funny.

93 Tigger2005  Sat, Nov 15, 2008 5:24:08pm

Welcome to the Barack Hussein Obama Presidential Library! (We aren't shy of using his middle name any more!)

[Link: img186.imageshack.us...]

As you approach the Library, you are immediately blinded by the sun-like radiance emanating from His Eminence's mighty gold-plated statue, which is approximately ten feet taller than the Statue of Liberty (before it was destroyed in the tragedy of 2011). You can pause to read the inscription by Maya Angelou projected on the base: "By the rainbow's pulse, the sun of a new dawn rises upon the land, the indigo giant arises, the oceans fall, heed His call, O citizen of the world!"

Not to be outdone, the gleaming marble of the massive Main Hall (the Temple of Obama) now greets your eyes. White fluted columns support it. You mount the 57 steps and enter the citadel. What will greet you there? It changes day to day. A Code Pink/Breasts Not Bombs dance? A UN child choir concert? An Obama film festival? But always you will behold the Great Seal of Obama upon the marble floor, the permanent display of Revolutionary art, and ongoing services in the Worship Hall (you may have to visit the Secondary Worship Hall, as the Muslim worshipers have forced almost all infidels out of the main sanctuary).

Going on, you enter "The Bus," which pays tribute to the many influences on Obama's life. In this long building are halls for Frank Marshall Davis, Saul Alinsky, ACORN, the Reverend Wright, Louis Farrakhan, Father Phleger, Bill Ayers, Rashid Khalidi, and many others.

The Bus passes over the Meditation Gardens and the huge Meditation Pools. Stop, enjoy a latte, and listen to the gently lapping waters and flowing fountains as you breathe in the scents of the 100% organic gardens. For $50 you can rent a paddle-boat.

Off by itself across the South Pool is the Hall of Sealed Records. You can't go there. All potentially incriminating stuff from Obama's past and his years in the White House is in there under lock and key, until the last of his political enemies who might dare attempt to stain his glorious legacy is eliminated. Some particularly sensitive material has already been shredded and atomized. (But his nirth certificate is still there!)

We hope you've enjoyed your visit. Please visit the gift shop back in the main hall and pick up your Obama booty and signed copies of his biographies (purchase several of each). You can also get your copy of 6,785 page Global Constitution, to which Obama was the first signatory!

Tigger2005

California Fire Season. Sorta like Tornado Season in the Midwest. You know it is coming, you know people are going to lose all their stuff, yet it's simply amazing to watch every year (I've been through the tornado shit personally).

A lot of the fires -- including the ones burning now -- are in areas where the house prices read like telephone numbers. Some of them read like long-distance telephone numbers.

I don't know...there is a reason he earned the "Velvet Hammer" moniker. Is there a correlation between how personable a party chairman is and party numbers? How many people even KNOW who the head of the RNC or DNC is? Can you get much more grating than Howard Dean? For all of you who were merrily trashing the unions a couple of threads back, a little tale from Studs Terkel, who died at the age of 96 on October 31:

About 25 years ago, Studs Terkel was waiting for a number 146 bus alongside two well-groomed business types. "This was before the term yuppie was used," he explains. "But that was what they were. He was in Brooks Brothers and Gucci shoes and carrying the Wall Street Journal under his arm. She was a looker. I mean stunning - Bloomingdales and Neiman Marcus and carrying Vanity Fair."

Terkel, who is 95, has long been a Chicago icon, every bit as accessible and integral to the cultural life of the Windy City as Susan Sontag was to New York. He had shared the bus stop with this couple for several mornings but they had always failed to acknowledge him. "It hurts my ego," he quips. "But this morning the bus was late and I thought, this is my chance." The rest of the story is his.

"I say, 'Labour Day is coming up.' Well, it was the wrong thing to say. He looks toward me with a look of such contempt it's like Noel Coward has just spotted a bug on his collar. He says, 'We despise unions.' I thought, oooh. The bus is still late. I've got a winner here. Suddenly I'm the ancient mariner and I fix him with my glittering eye. 'How many hours a day do you work?' I ask. He says, 'Eight.' 'How comes you don't work 18 hours a day like your great-great-grandfather did? You know why? Because four guys got hanged in Chicago in 1886 fighting for the eight-hour day ... For you.'

"Well, he was scared and nervous and the bus was still late. I've got this guy pinned up against the mailbox. He couldn't get away. 'How many days a week do you work?' I went on. Well, then the bus came and I never saw them again. But I think that every workday morning she was looking from the 15th floor of their apartment block to see if that mad man was still there."

And by the way, all those European car drivers out there? Your cars are also union built. I know. I worked as a vacation replacement for Daimler Benz when I was a student in Germany. Helped me get through university. See, the union workers there got six week vacations and could take them all in one chunk.

The European manufacturers still have union labor forces, and they still turn out cars, and people still buy them. The unions are not what destroyed US auto companies.

So trying to have a chance to show that she (Palin) is nothing like what the Left portrayed her as is now a bad thing? Having principles of willfully ignoring a large bloc of people is going to be electoral death.

You're right, every worker at GM should get a 6 week vacation and a big raise!

Actually, I think they should fire every last executive and promote the actual guys building these cars. Then, hire away some designers from the Japanese companies and tell all the workers they are taking a pay cut and a reduction in benefits. And, as much as it hurts, cut some of the benefits from the retirees.

Too high of a liability with the retirees, too high labor costs, too many unimaginative designs all conducted in a 1950's time warp business model. Welcome to the 2000's GM.

It would be very foolish to "bail out" big Auto if they plan on conducting business as usual once they get their billions.

OT - Decided to take the dog for a walk in nearby Kensington Metropark, during a break in the rain/snow. It was invigorating for both of us. Way too much time spent indoors of late, worrying about politics, the economy, and illness in the family.

We saw several deer, including a nice buck with at least 8 pts on his rack. I'm not a hunter, but I'm not against hunting -- in fact, they have had to hold brief hunts in this park, due to the overpopulation of deer, despite its location close to residential areas. I think they restrict it to bow-hunting and shotguns.

We also managed to sneak up on a Great Blue Heron, doing a little fishing on his way south. He was only about 30 yards away from us, about 10 feet into the water, which reached his knees at that point. He snatched a fish out of the water with such speed, I'm not sure I would have seen him move, if I hadn't seen him horking it down afterwards, his neck elongated towards the sky. He appeared to give us a look then, kind of like "How'd you like that one, boys?", before flying off towards the treeline.

Is there a bird on earth that looks more dinosaur-ish, than the big heron? I don't think so. Maybe an ostrich or an emu, but the fierce, predatory look in that heron's yellow eye seemed right out of a book of imaginatively-illustrated dinosaurs. In flight, it looked just like a pterodactyl. Admittedly, it was a little dark and foggy out there, and my eyesight isn't 20/20 anymore. ;)

This is one heck of a coincidence:

The owners of a Huntsville motel insist their decision to replace the United States flag with a Confederate flag following Barack Obama's victory last week in the Presidential election had nothing to do with race. In a written statement to The Record, the owners of the Faubus Motel did say that the reason for the change in flags was politically driven.

I had to check to see if that wasn't from the Onion. Anyone flying a Confederate flag over a motel with the same name as one of the most well-known segregationist governors should know what to expect. The owner can't be that tone-deaf.

We've both lived in Detroit our whole lives, moved to the deep suburbs about 17 years ago when we had our first daughter. We both want to live further away from the city, and closer to nature, but right now reality intrudes. Someday.

Wargames.

Yes! It was young Matthew Broderick, with his cute little girlfriend, who met up with the scientist and his dino-plane. Then, they all saved the world, thankfully.

Yeah we think it's bureaucracy as well.
San Diego has two at this moment
Los Angles County has two. At this moment.
So perhaps someone does know, because we've certainly supported them down there before.
Kills us to see these folks suffer needlessly when it's so containable.

re: #238 garycooper

OH then you'll love it garycooper, we still have one in College, and just a bit early for the retirement plans, but decided to make this bold move anyway.
I won't be working for a while, no second car, but the other expenses not incurred are already showing us in the black.
We saw the housing markets going down and decided to jump before our house - in the burbs, lost value when we had originally planed to sell at retirement.
We got lucky, even with carrying two home for three months.
Had a back up plan, well two actually. Thankfully didn't need them. Phew!
Being fiscally responsible finally paid off.
Had we done this in 6 -7 years from now this property would likely be out of our range.
Our hope is that after retiring, hubby who works on these yellow birds can consult to companies that own them, as the retirement funds are not to be counted on now.

re: #241 leap_frog

Our retirement and college funds took major hits this year, and our home has lost about a third of its value, based on what we could have sold it for five years ago. Michigan has been in a recession for about that long, but it took the last couple of years of DEEP recession to put us behind the eight-ball. We're making out fine, compared to lots of people around here, and luckily we don't have to move like so many of our former and current neighbors have had to do. We're hoping for better times ahead, in the next ten years or so. In the meantime, we hunker down and keep our noses to the grindstone.

A cold rainy day in the Midwest--a perfect day to read. I decided to re-read Atlas Shrugged.

What is man's fate? Hasn't it always been to hope, but never to achieve?

Sounds Obama-esque to me...

Same here on the funds for education and retirement, things are now not as secure as we'd like or thought it would be. Five years old car in excellent running order, hoping to get another five, instead of buying newer. Don't really need it until the cost of repairing exceeds the purchase of a newer one. We never bought brand new, never.

Even the kid has realized it, and is considering joining our military this summer as way of getting though her course in one shot.
Want's to be a chef.
We're delighted of course, especially that she came up with it on her own, and of course the is a family military history going back to WW ll on both sides for her.
Our ace in the hole is hubby's skill and endorsements for air worthiness on aircraft such as the 'super scoopers' ( we love that name BTW - distinctly an affectionate American handle).

Kind of like the people who don't make mortgage payments for over a year, get mad at the bank and destroy the house on the way out.

re: #237 I heart the USA

Then I have no idea why they aren't being used. Are you sure they're not being used on any of the Cali fires? If not, I have no idea why not, except some bureaucratic bs red tape. :-(

Are those the ones that reload water from the ocean? With that in mind, do they only work coastal fires like Malibu? I can't believe I don't know this.

I did see the big DC-10 that drops the fire retardant make a couple drops today on the news. Watching that big jet flying so low and daring is just boggling.

The military is an excellent option for many young people, and it worked out perfectly for several of my siblings. We've got a long military history in our family, too. I have a very hard time seeing my two daughters in the military, though. The older one is a very sensitive musician/writer/artist kind of girl, and she stands all of 5'1" tall, just like her mother. The younger one is taller, and more athletic, but she has her future all figured-out at age 15: graduate with a perfect academic record, get a scholarship to the college of her choice, and then on to medical school...that last part is the part that scares me, financially. My brother's a doctor, and he was sharp enough to have the Navy pay for his med school, in return for 4 years of touring the world, living mostly in Okinawa and Japan.

Well, it's off to sleep for me. A full day of family-obligations awaits in the morning, starting with a hospital visit to Mom at 7am. All fun and games, eh?

re: #258 garycooper

Yes I agree gc, and the options for her are great now here, compared to when I was her age.
She'd do well in the military, she's a hardy kind of person. Not necessarily a most popular one, but a leader in her group of peers and long standing friendships that she values. One of our closest friends did the military route and has no regrets, and my daughter admires her.
Your daughters sound like great kids, bet their parents spent real time with them while they grew up.
Can recall friends saying 'oh, get a babysitter and come along'
Never had an evening babysitter. She stayed with trusted family members or we stayed home. We don't feel we missed out on anything at all.
:)
And thanks for the chat, best of luck with the fires, will be checking back tomorrow, g'night.

Fires, Tornados, Earthquakes

I appreciated the candor in this writer.
Tough times all around, flames are good video. We had a close encounter near here, but it got put down quickly by two beautiful drops.

The world is big, complex, and dangerous. There is no place to go, to build, and to live where nature cannot give some self-righteous critic the ability to blame us for living.

The fires will go out. The smoke will clear. The trees will grow back. Nature is pretty tough. The houses will be rebuilt. Human beings are amazingly resilient and filled with hope and healthy denial.

Life is not safe. We see walls of flame, burning homes, forests and whole communities swept away by wind and flood. The world is dangerous and nature capricious. Chaos theory indicates some hint of order of patterns, but the sea cannot be controlled any more than the winds, flames or the tectonic plates. We are always vulnerable, tied by the thinnest thread to this fragile miracle of Life

Well, I'm late to the party but the first thing I thought of when I saw this was an old Stargate SG-1 episode called Red Sky which still bugs me to this day because the science it in was terrible.

Saw a funny sight on The Hogue shooting range near San Luis Obispo a couple years ago. While waiting for my turn I saw several Great Blue Herons up on the side of a hill near some rocks. Every now and again one would strike and come up with a ground sqirrel, flip it into the air and swallow it down headfirst. Amazing!

re: #260 Mel Lono

That's California. God is angry at California, always going Biblical on your free-living asses.

Here in Michigan, the worst we see is an occasional tornado, to liven up our boring days. Sometimes it snows, in the winter. One time, when I was a teenager, there was a hailstorm during rush-hour, that put a lot of tiny dents in people's cars, requiring the insurance companies to shell out for a lot of paint jobs. Boy, were they miffed!
