Islam is the reason British teachers are suddenly happy to teach creationism

One in three teachers believe that creationism should be taught in school science lessons. Why? It's not because they've developed a sudden respect for fundamentalist Christian interpretations of the Bible. It's because devout Muslim pupils - and their parents - regard Darwin's teachings as blasphemous.

The science of evolution contradicts a literal reading of the Koran, just as it contradicts the seven-day creation narrative of Genesis. The difference is that most devout Muslims - more than 90 per cent worldwide - accept Islam's account of creation as the simple truth, whereas in Britain only a small minority of churchgoers are creationists.

In the last five years, Harun Yahya, a Turkish-based Islamic creationist propaganda machine, has been flooding the developed world with sophisticated material, including an incredibly glossy, huge and heavy 800-page Atlas of Creation which "proves" that all living species were created simultaneously. "Living beings have not undergone the slightest change for hundreds of millions of years," it asserts.

Multiple copies of this "atlas" have arrived at the two newspaper offices where I work, the Telegraph and the Catholic Herald.
.....
Meanwhile, as counterknowledge.com reports, the influence of Adnan Oktar, the fundamentalist who runs Harun Yahya, is growing enormously. Oktar has managed to block access in Turkey to numerous websites that challenge him, including at one stage Google groups.

re: #172 VMA211Dan

Nope. Industrial Arts are no longer taught in our public schools. That's why there is such a profession as handyman. Making a comeback.

Modern "vocational education" consists primarily of "information oriented" training aimed at starting the student off in a white-collar job earning enough to get hit with BHO's first tax hike ($40K/year minimum). This is why high-school graduates (who often can't read or write above what I would define as a third-grade level) go into the work force thinking that doing things like working in a major company's mailroom, etc., are "unsuitable"- they want the corner office, and they want it now.

Thanks to their equally-unrealistic instructors' attitudes, instead of telling their secretaries to get them their lattes' immediately, their actual job-related dialogue is more likely to be "Do you want fries with that?"

Assuming that they can even do that effectively.

/My recent experiences as a customer at local fast-food places tends to make me believe otherwise.

I will check with the high school. But even back in the late '70's, one could not get into shop or trades classes in my high school without making grades LOWER than C's.

Boy, your local vo-tech system sucks! That certainly does not describe our local system at all - in fact, it's the only area local schools aren't totally inculcated with all the PC bullshit. And, they are learning useful trades!

Most of our local trades work on what used to be called the apprenticeship system. Precisely because "vocational education" no longer actually has anything to do with anything like an actual blue-collar job.

On the one hand, the local small business contractors, garages, etc., really hate having to take applicants "on spec" and hope they're smart enough to train. On the other, as one told me, "At least I don't have to un-teach them a lot of B.S. first."

This is looking more and more like the "High Renaissance" to me. In which, as James Burke related in The Day The Universe Changed, the early industrial revolution that began during the medieval period continued in the trade guilds, while the universities (where all the "people of quality" sent their scions) had become "temples of irrelevant logic-chopping" teaching what should have been serious subjects (politics, medicine, etc.) in a manner totally unrelated to reality.

And on that note, I'm really outta here, while I'm still awake enough to say...

Good night, Lizards.

Sleep tight.

cheers

Two Bathroom Poems

To the Faucet

you're not an ocean
a river a lake by the bay
but you're my galaxy
my bringer of life and form
with the sway of a hand
or an engineer's torque
screws gaskets and pressure
swig me your gorgeous noise
fountain's cousin hydro pour
stand and twist and obey
your power is you own us
and we ignore you in return

To the Toilet

white empty may you always be
a clean throat of many favors
a courier not unpleasing in shape
(an elephant embryo no less)
you let us decide anytime your hospitality
firm or choked your gargle your flush
recedes all from the surface
how you welcome our hugs when at our lowest
we give back to you our blasphemed essences
without reproach blameless dutiful
with such joyful sush and rush
you force on us the celebration
of commodious internal wash

316 grandma  Sat, Nov 15, 2008 7:47:31pm

Is this the Saturday thread where we tell tales about the plumbing problems we’ve dealt with? If so, I’ll entertain you with an story that’s 30 years old, just for fun.

The bathroom sink became clogged. I mentioned to my mate at the time, George, that I had to get a plumber to unclog it. George suggested that we could do it ourselves, save the $$, and he knew just how to help. So I let him at it. At the time, George was the fixed asset accountant at his company. He checked out, with a property pass, a tool called the "Plumber’s Friend". He brought it after work to my house. Back then, George (as a bean counter) wore a suit and tie to work every day. The tool came in a large metal case and operated as a tire pump on steroids with a trigger, a pressure gauge, and rubber fittings. The concept was that when the air pressure hit the water in the clog, the clog would act as a bullet and force the water and junk down the drain.

George’s right arm suffered motor nerve problems, so he couldn’t hand pump the tool up to the 60-psi required. That’s when he got my 12-year old son involved. He told the kid to pump it up to 100-psi on the gauge (Oy vay). My son complied.

Then George put the proper rubber fitting on the end, stuck it into the drain of the sink and pulled the trigger. What George missed was the overflow opening at the backside of the sink. Well, pressure will find the easiest way out, and all that pressure blasted onto George out of the overflow hole right in his face and all over his suit. It was not clean. My son ran out of the bathroom very fast and disappeared (he knew a sh*tstorm when he saw it coming). I fell on the floor laughing until I almost cried. And George hardly knew what hit him.

I gave George some spare clothes, took his to the cleaners, and called the plumber the next day.

Hope I gave you a giggle on this chilly Saturday evening in the Carolinas, and have a nice day with no plumbing problems.

Charles -

My Personal apartment is being renovated - New Paint and Tile Floors - Love the idea of "artsy" throw rugs instead of the "Indoor/Outdoor" wall to wall when it is done. The renovation will leave the place acoustically "bright," which I like. Getting a new kitchen as well. When the old sink was taken out, a leak developed, solved by, of all things - A FAUCET!
