800+ households lost their homes in Southern California today. I'm fortunate to not be one of them and not even close. But I feel just awful for these poor people. Word is that the fire that destroyed 500 mobile homes in the Sylmar area was arson. Someone set that fire. It didn't have to happen.

Not everyone in L.A. is a filthy rich celebrity with multiple homes. Oprah and Rob Lowe will be fine. A lot of other normal, non-celebrity people, not so much.

Yeah, me and a buddy at work were just talking about that tune the other day. I just happened to start mentioning it, and immediately chimed in with, "Ray Charles and Willie Nelson? I love that version!" He's kind of a sod-head, so I've discounted his opinion on music from time to time. But he's also the guy who turned me on to Marty Stuart's "The Pilgrim."

So now I've figured out he has some cool bones.

From Moliere:

Act 2

Dorine: "To tell the truth, lovers are all insane!"

81 pat  Sat, Nov 15, 2008 10:58:04pm

In Xanadu did Kubla Khan
A stately pleasure dome decree:
Where Alph, the sacred river, ran
Through caverns measureless to man
Down to a sunless sea.
So twice five miles of fertile ground
With walls and towers were girdled round:
And there were gardens bright with sinuous rills,
Where blossomed many an incense-bearing tree;
And here were forests ancient as the hills,
Enfolding sunny spots of greenery.

But oh! that deep romantic chasm which slanted
Down the green hill athwart a cedarn cover!
A savage place! as holy and enchanted
As e'er beneath a waning moon was haunted
By woman wailing for her demon lover!
And from this chasm, with ceaseless turmoil seething,
As if this earth in fast thick pants were breathing,
A mighty fountain momently was forced:
Amid whose swift half-intermitted burst
Huge fragments vaulted like rebounding hail,
Or chaffy grain beneath the thresher's flail:
And 'mid these dancing rocks at once and ever
It flung up momently the sacred river.
Five miles meandering with a mazy motion
Through wood and dale the sacred river ran,
Then reached the caverns measureless to man,
And sank in tumult to a lifeless ocean:
And 'mid this tumult Kubla heard from far
Ancestral voices prophesying war!

The shadow of the dome of pleasure
Floated midway on the waves;
Where was heard the mingled measure
From the fountain and the caves.
It was a miracle of rare device,
A sunny pleasure dome with caves of ice!

A damsel with a dulcimer
In a vision once I saw:
It was an Abyssinian maid,
And on her dulcimer she played,
Singing of Mount Abora.
Could I revive within me
Her symphony and song,
To such a deep delight 'twould win me,
That with music loud and long,
I would build that dome in air,
That sunny dome! those caves of ice!
And all who heard should see them there,
And all should cry, Beware! Beware!
His flashing eyes, his floating hair!
Weave a circle round him thrice,
And close your eyes with holy dread,
For he on honey-dew hath fed,
And drunk the milk of Paradise.

re: #73 Syrah

I don't care. I was asking for other lizard's opinions about whether we are to assume that there is a woman, calling to her daemonic lover, or not.

From this part of the second stanza:

But oh ! that deep romantic chasm which slanted
Down the green hill athwart a cedarn cover !
A savage place ! as holy and enchanted
As e'er beneath a waning moon was haunted
By woman wailing for her demon-lover !

I never read that as requiring an actual woman. I'm rather pissed off at some academic who writes:

In the second stanza, the tenor of the poem shifts from the balance and tranquility in the first few lines to an uneasy suggestion of the preternatural. A woman calls to her daemonic lover and the Khan hearkens to “Ancestral voices prophesying war.”

The passages incorporating these statements are rather separate; one is a simile, the other is a statement in the poem.

I'm irate. But I could easily be wrong.

I'm soliciting other opinions.

This has to be one of the most disturbing things I've ever heard from the Left (I avoid KOS) and I CAN NOT believe the Libs talk about Rush. I had to click out of the video 15 seconds into it. My Lib friend sent me the link with the caption: "gotta love this guy".
I can only hope he was joking and just trying to get a rise out of me.
I'd hate to think he listens to this stuff on a regular basis. It is delusional and the lack of rational thought is scary. They could make any of us out to be demons worthy of the death penalty or incarceration. Again, there is no hint of rational thought here. Pure propaganda indoctrination you'd expect to hear in the old Soviet Union, the Chinese "...Cultural Revolution" or "Gang of Four". Here is the link - have some Pepto handy - you're gonna need it:

Gillian Welch swears that, if you want a good into at the Grand Ole Opry, you must wear rhinestones.

I was in the audience at the Fillmore when she told us that.

Fine for a lady.

I felt Mr. Stuart's pants were a bit tight, and perhaps a bit girly, for the Grand O'l Opry (in that video). Could use a haircut, too - for the Grand O'l Opry.

I say that as a man who's hair once reached his own buttocks, and wore pants far tighter than that, and I'm not nearly the musician as Marty Stuart.

Reminds me of a story from about eight or nine years ago. Steve Earle was touring with the Del McCoury Band. It happened one night that Mr. McCoury heard Earle utter a profanity back-stage at a gig and promptly kicked his sinnin' @$$ off the tour.

The thing is, Steve Earle brought an incredible amount of new faces to the tour that have never heard mountain music, and didn't understand that McCoury is a legend in his time.

Gotta respect a man with standards.

You're right, more disturbing than a lot of stuff, and I just wonder how many listen to this truly insane lunatic. I don't care. I was asking for other lizard's opinions about whether we are to assume that there is a woman, calling to her daemonic lover, or not.

From this part of the second stanza:

The passages incorporating these statements are rather separate; one is a simile, the other is a statement in the poem.

I'm irate. But I could easily be wrong.

I'm soliciting other opinions.

I meant no offense.

To answer directly. No. I don't think we are supposed to think that we are "to think that there is an actual woman calling for her daemonic lover."

"e'er" is the key to that.

This is a line to ilustrate the primordial, dark and wild place, completely unrestrained by reason and wholly given over to the passions that is the chasm that is the well spring of that river.

Nothing more.

"To seek the sacred river Alph
To walk the caves of ice
To break my fast on honey dew
And drink the milk of Paradise...."

I had heard the whispered tales
Of immortality
The deepest mystery
From an ancient book. I took a clue
I scaled the frozen mountain tops
Of eastern lands unknown
Time and Man alone
Searching for the lost ---- Xanadu

Xanadu ---- To stand within The Pleasure Dome
Decreed by Kubla Khan
To taste anew the fruits of life
The last immortal man
To find the sacred river Alph
To walk the caves of ice
Oh, I will dine on honey dew
And drink the milk of Paradise

A thousand years have come and gone
But time has passed me by
Stars stopped in the sky
Frozen in an everlasting view
Waiting for the world to end
Weary of the night
Praying for the light
Prison of the lost ---- Xanadu

Xanadu ---- Held within The Pleasure Dome
Decreed by Kubla Khan
To taste my bitter triumph
As a mad immortal man
Nevermore shall I return
Escape these caves of ice
For I have dined on honey dew
And drunk the milk of Paradise

Ward, a former Roman Catholic priest whose KGO broadcasts included the Sunday morning "God Talk" program, "had an opportunity to think long, hard and deeply about the problems of child abuse" in the Catholic Church. Why, the judge asked, "when he encountered his own predilection (for child pornography), didn't he seek treatment, seek help?"

Ward pleaded guilty in May to distributing child pornography and admitted sending between 15 and 150 pornographic images by e-mail, which he said were part of research for a book.

Ward holds a master's degree in theology and spent two years in the priesthood before leaving to get married. He worked for three years as a legislative assistant for then-Rep. Barbara Boxer before joining KGO in San Francisco as a reporter in 1985. He became a talk-show host in 1992 and held forth on news and politics for three hours every weeknight, while discussing religious issues on Sunday mornings.

The station, which nicknamed him the "lion of the left" for his outspoken manner and liberal views, fired him in December after his federal grand jury indictment was unsealed.

Ward was investigated after a woman in Oakdale (Stanislaus County) contacted police in 2005 and said a former priest, later identified as Ward, had been having sex chats with her by e-mail and had sent her a photo showing child pornography.

Police got a search warrant for the online account and found about 100 images showing minors, some as young as 2 or 3, engaged in sexually explicit conduct, prosecutors said. They said Ward exchanged the pictures with a group of 10 people for about a year.

At times, in that twilight-zone state just before I wake up, I even think, I'm about to wake up, and I'll be sure to remember this, but then I do wake up and the details are gone all the same, only the general setting remains. At times, in that twilight-zone state just before I wake up, I even think, I'm about to wake up, and I'll be sure to remember this, but then I do wake up and the details are gone all the same, only the general setting remains. So many books, so little time.

Interesting, especially considering that reading and dreaming are done on two opposite sides of the brain. Most people can't actually read in their dreams.

Why, the judge asked, "when he encountered his own predilection (for child pornography), didn't he seek treatment, seek help?"

Because he didn't want to. So why the hell did the Judge say this?

Ward's case is a "personal tragedy," and a prison term may not be the best way to help him or the children exploited by pornography, Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker said as he imposed the sentence in a San Francisco courtroom.

Typical, we need to help this perp? No, we need to protect the public and that is accomplished by putting him away forever. There is no rehabilitation for pedophiles, even castration doesn't work.

I strongly suggest you keep a notepad and pencil by your bed. As soon as you realize you've had one of these dreams, get up and write down every detail you can remember.

I had "vivid dreams" for a six-month period a few years ago. I set up a private weblog for them, so that I could go back to them later. I learned an incredible amount from them, including a very important lesson: "Pay attention to the signs."

Oh my God, we were listening and shouting together, I swear....I could not agree more, not only does speculation do NO ONE any good (like the crap about Obama being Muslim or being a non-citizen), but it gives the libs more ammo against the conservative commentators. All it would take would be one lib to grab that snippet from Hannity and, if it's not true, use it to impeach everything he's ever said, 99% of which is true and fair and responsible. They take stuff out of context easily enough, let's not give them something to aim at IN context! But at least he did quickly say he wasn't sure it was true....and during that same show, he was begging Ayers to come on and talk to him, to answer some real questions, I would truly buy tickets to that interview.

Chief: No evidence to justify Iraq war
Saturday, November 15, 2008 10:48 GMT
A report by Australia’s former military chief Admiral Chris Barrie pointed out that there was no evidence to justify going to war in Iraq in 2003. Barrie, who headed the Australian Defense Force at the time, made the comments during an interview for a new television series about former Prime Minister John Howard's decade in power.
“I have to say, even up until the day I retired, I never saw any evidence that said suddenly we had to go off and do a job in Iraq,” Barrie said, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) reported on its website. Read article in Arabic

I don't recall whether or not I've read in other dreams besides this one, but I've had this one several times in different versions.

I heard the same thing a long time ago, that it's impossible to read text in a dream, but always wondered if its true, because I swear I have had dreams where I read something. Check out what i found, it looks like someone else out there has the same dreams as you:

Supposedly an impossible thing to do, since dreaming is done with the right brain, and reading is done with the left brain, and the one cannot create the functions of the other. This is almost accurate. During sleep, certain parts of the brain are inactive, including those responsible for making out forms of letters and words (parts whose failure causes disorders such as dyslexia or dysgraphia). However, this does not preclude reading, only making out the forms of letters and words.

There was a study on the relation of dreams to memory, in which amnesiacs who played heavy amounts of Tetris reported dreaming about the game. Any sufficiently intellectual addictive activity puts enough strain on the memory to affect a person's dreams. This is straightforward enough in the cases of games like Tetris or Devil Dice, but also applies to activities such as text-based MUDs or Everything.

In my days of psychological addiction to MUDS and to Everything, I have often dreamt of doing these things, as odd as that might sound to someone less neurotic. I sometimes dream about reading books, only to be disappointed when I wake up and realize that I can never figure out how the story ended, since it was being written by my subconscious and no hard copy exists. Once I dreamed that I nearly missed an important math test because I didn't have a ticket marked "5 pm" and everyone else did.

What is impossible in dreaming is the sense -- not the perception -- involved in reading. Therefore it is possible to read in a dream, but not to focus on actual letters and words.

I am watching Cavuto and there are talking about Freddie May and Fanny Mac helping people who have missed 3 or more payments.

Question from Cuvoto: What will stop people from saying/doing, "I will miss 3 payments and let them help me." This even when these people can make their payments?

I just had this conversation today. A guy blew off his payments for a few months, and the mortgage company gave him a 4% 40 year fixed mortgate. Um, kinda sounds like a plan, doesn't it?

Gratuitous gun post.

Bought a maintenance manual for my new (to me) SKS this afternoon, then spent a fun and instructive evening taking it apart and cleaning it. Fair amount of dirt inside there, but nothing that didn't come off quickly, and the firing pin moves nice and easy. 1952 Russian Tula Armory, never been rebuilt. I love my new Commie gun, and am looking forward to shooting it.

I can't argue with your assessment!

O'Reilly covered the NAMBLA-ACLU story pretty thoroughly. Does ACLU even make a pretense anymore of caring about the civil rights of anyone who doesn't share their political ideology? Let's ask Joe the Plumber...

Oh, SUCH a good point...I didn't see anyone running to his defense when his entire life was ripped apart (illegally, I might add) for political gain. Can you imagine if the tables were turned? Know Rosamond. Used to drive thru to Tehachipi. I remember the bar/stop at the corner with the only stop sign for miles. I like the desert, but then I was born in AZ.

I guess I like it, too, but I was born and raised in Austin, TX....lots of hills and green and RAIN....that's what I miss most, the rain and the thunderstorms. I haven't heard thunder in about 10 years, and rain is cause for a national holiday in these parts. Now, Tehachapi, that is a lovely town - way higher elevation, so they get seasons and precipitation and stuff.

Now I'm curious to look into this more, because in my memory of these dreams, I definitely was reading letters. The whole thing made me sick.

It made me sick and scared...to think that all these agencies can just start digging your life up because they disagree with your politics? Are you kidding me? I mean, I'm not naive, I know stuff like this goes on, of course, but it was so blatant, and everyone was just so matter of fact and unapologetic for it - almost like, "well, he had it coming! he put himself in the public eye, so he's fair game now." Really? Standing in your front yard, and a candidate comes to YOU, and you ask him a question, that's putting yourself out there? And even if he had been the initiator of that contact, so what? In NO WAY does that make it ok for government agencies to start stripping apart your private details - and oh yeah, publicizing them! - to try to discredit you. What really irritated me was the lack of response from anyone in power - authorities, the media - even the conservative media wasn't as appalled as I thought they should be, it's like they've even started to give up the fight, they knew nothing would be done about it.

You're so right - I just imagine if I had a microphone, no WAY would I be able to restrain myself the way these guys do. And it sends me into fits n tizzies when I hear someone accusing THEM of being biased or hateful or whatever adjective they're using today.... what they say IS negative and hateful, of course. Because it's the TRUTH, and the truth about the left is negative, there's no way around it. That's what I always said when people said McCain was "going negative" with his campaign - well, when there is nothing nice to say about your opponent, but you're required to say SOMETHING, well, I guess it's going to be negative.

It is incredibly frustrating, and knowing that if it weren't for the internet, I would know about 2% of what I know is even more frightening, cause that means there are a lot of folks out there who are just truly in the dark - cause they only know what the MSM wants them to know, and they take it as gospel. And it's only going to get worse with the Dems in power - Fairness Doctrine, my ass. "Left Wing, 'Listen To Us, Dammit, You HAVE To Now!' Doctrine" is more like it.

Reconciliation and Independence:

A question and concerns of T.J. 1775:

DEAR SIR, -- I received your message by Mr. Braxton & immediately gave him an order on the Treasurer for the money which the Treasurer assured me should be answered on his return. I now send the bearer for the violin & such music appurtaining to her as may be of no use to the young ladies. I beleive you had no case to her. If so, be so good as to direct Watt Lenox to get from Prentis's some bays or other coarse woollen to wrap her in & then to pack her securely in a wooden box. I am sorry the situation of our country should render it not eligible to you to remain longer in it. I hope the returning wisdom of Great Britain will, ere long, put an end to this unnatural contest. There may be people to whose tempers and dispositions contention is pleasing, and who, therefore, wish a continuance of confusion, but to me it is of all states but one, the most horrid. My first wish is a restoration of our just rights; my second, a return of the happy period, when, consistently with duty, I may withdraw myself totally from the public stage, and pass the rest of my days in domestic ease and tranquillity, banishing every desire of ever hearing what passes in the world. Perhaps (for the latter adds considerably to the warmth of the former wish), looking with fondness towards a reconciliation with Great Britain, I cannot help hoping you may be able to contribute towards expediting this good work. I think it must be evident to yourself, that the Ministry have been deceived by their officers on this side of the water, who (for what purpose I cannot tell) have constantly represented the American opposition as that of a small faction, in which the body of the people took little part. This, you can inform them, of your own knowledge, is untrue. They have taken it into their heads, too, that we are cowards, and shall surrender at discretion to an armed force. The past and future operations of the war must confirm or undeceive them on that head. I wish they were thoroughly and minutely acquainted with every circumstance relative to America, as it exists in truth. I am persuaded, this would go far towards disposing them to reconciliation. Even those in Parliament who are called friends to America, seem to know nothing of our real determinations. I observe, they pronounced in the last Parliament, that the Congress of 1774 did not mean to insist rigorously on the terms they held out, but kept something in reserve, to give up; and, in fact, that they would give up everything but the article of taxation. Now, the truth is far from this, as I can affirm, and put my honor to the assertion. Their continuance in this error may, perhaps, produce very ill consequences. The Congress stated the lowest terms they thought possible to be accepted, in order to convince the world they were not unreasonable. They gave up the monopoly and regulation of trade, and all acts of Parliament prior to 1764, leaving to British generosity to render these, at some future time, as easy to America as the interest of Britain would admit. But this was before blood was spilt.

The Secret Service called me one time. I had reported a death threat against Vice President Cheney and they called me back in under half an hour. It was pretty cool.

I'm not looking forward to future phone calls. Pat Dollard, someone I had respect for, lost it a few days ago by putting a picture of Obama with a target on his head on his website.

*sigh*

C'est la merde!

Look, the "canon" was the invention of deluded Trekkie dweebs. The third episode has a roguish Spock in a yellow shirt. The Klingons grew bumps on their heads, for crying out loud! Loosen your sphincter. Or not. The movie is going to make a frikking mint in spite of the shriekingly annoying anal-obsessed Trekkies.

Yes and no. Some of it came from the TOS script bible, most mentioned in the series itself. And yes some of us are/were anal obsessed. But when Braga got his mitts on the franchise, it went down the tubes. personally I think DS9 should have been the last series for a long while.

No offense intended. But the fact that Trekkie purists are going to hate this film is a GOOD thing.

I thought TNG had it's moments but I've only really been enthused with the original series because of the chemistry of the main characters. If this movie doesn't do that justice, I figure I can continue to indulge in my TOS DVDs until the pain subsides.

My son just got back from seeing the new bond film. He was fairly disappointed with all the America bashing.

I predict that very soon, the moonbats will become incensed with all the foreign America-bashing that will still be going on -- or, in the case of Eastern Europe, intensifying (seeing as how we are going to make their lives a lot more precarious in the Obama Era). When it turns out that the rest of the world doesn't prostrate itself at the feet of Obama's America, the Lefties will be sooooo pissed.

I was wondering 10 years ago what would happen if we had voluntary control of where our tax money is spent? The liberals could throw their taxes into socialism and the conservatives would finance defense and law enforcement. Oh, I could probably get a template and do a blech job of it, but I don't know how to make a page that looks the way I want it to and does what I want it to.

/ya see...if I'd won the Powerball I could afford to hire someone. :-(

Some of the dummy books, and complete idiot guides would be a good start. I used "The Complete Idiots Guide to HTML" when I was taking computer programming back in college. It was cheaper and better then the text book we had to use.

/and more informative then the bloody teacher.

What are the Libs gonna argue now that the Iraqi government has asked us to stay until 2011?
Are they still gonna say that Iraqis want us to leave?

Hmmm. A book. Didn't think of that! (DUH.) I've been trying to find tutorials on the web.

Thanks!

Wouldn't surprise me at all. With the amount of knowledge you would need to know, you can't memorize it all. One thing I understood before I melted down.

There are a lot of good tutorials on the net. At home I think I have a bunch bookmarked from back in the day.

It would be nice if we produced a "life for dummies" book to avoid getting getting knocked up at fifteen or gaining a bad drug habit. Perhaps a parent wielding a 2X4 might have some effect, but parents are becoming more and more distant from their offspring. Our society is declining because we are neglecting our children. I am not talking about financial neglect, this is educational and emotional neglect by parents who should not of born children in the first place.

One of the problems is that there's no decent Parents' Manual or documentation out there. I asked for one in the hospital after I had MNTS, but all they said was, "Here, let us show you how to change a diaper."

/thanks. I really could have figured that out for myself...

Arr! Never had a child 'me-self! But I do have experience with children and was one a while back. They are all good, you just have to provide some guidance!

And, you wouldn't believe how many dummies I've seen within IT.......

399 littleoldlady  Sun, Nov 16, 2008 3:17:30am

So....do I need a program (like Dreamweaver) to do this?

And am I better off on the PC or the mac?

And if anyone here knows this stuff...does QuarkXpress have a web design module? because I already know how to use Quark.

I was referencing more of the mgmt side than not....and I'm in the mgmt side so I have the PoV towards it.

That's ultimately the secret - finding a good mgmt team and philosophy.....which seems, remarkedly, to go hand in hand with success.

Of course, success is a bad thing these days, what with companies wanting to become banks to collect a share of the 700 billion....

It's kinda crazy nowadays, and stats show Americans are not spending nothing in the current crises. Extremely difficult to justify saving an entity that just delivered obscene profits to upper management.
