The left-wing veterans’ group called Vets for Peace has been occupying the National Archives in Washington DC. What, you didn’t hear that? Well, they’re occupying a scaffold outside the National Archives anyway. Well, sort of milling around on one level of a scaffold, to be precise. Nobody seems too anxious to evict them. Jonn Lilyea has pictures: Veterans for Peace at the Archives.

Features this classic photo of one of their support vehicles.

Republicans for Voldemort?

Is that Obama they're talking about? Not quite sure what's going on with that one.

And it's a bit tough to impeach Nixon, not only is he dead, but Ford pardoned him for any crimes that may have actually been committed.

I was shot at while in a guard tower [1971], Ft. Hood stockade perimeter tower. Idiots passing by in cars pelted the tower using slingshots. I wish I had had permission to shoot back. I got tired of that temporary [3 month] duty.

I think Liberals tend to be more "political" in nature, and wear their political opinions on their sleeves moreso than Conservatives. Government is very important to a Liberal, so they're very outspoken about it, and are more willing to plaster their snarky opinions all over their cars. Conservatives want government out of their lives as much as possible, and don't fixate on it, so they're less likely to obnoxiously display their opinions in public.

Conservatives also value their vehicles more, and don't want to ruin their paintjobs with stupid stickers!

Just my opinions!

The radicals that brought him there become a liability and are the first against the wall afterwards. You would think that after Russia, China, Cuba and a thousand others people would get that.

Oh, and the first thing we learn from history is that no one learns from history.

Remember the Kelo vs. New London Supreme Court case, where the Supreme Court decided that cities could condemn peoples’ land to give to private developers provided the government had written an economic development plan for the project?

The homes of Susette Kelo and her neighbors have been torn down for New London's Fort Trumbull project. So, how is the project progressing?

It isn't. The deal fell through, and New London, Connecticut is the proud owner of several vacant lots, including the one where Susette Kelo's home used to be.

Woe!

I also don't want my car vandalized by "tolerant" liberals. God help me (and them ) if I catch one in the act.

More importantly, doing so during a time of economic downturn that ought to be absorbing every moment of their attention will not play well with the majority of the country. It might delight the lunatic 5% fringe, but most people, on both sides of the aisle, would see it as a travesty; a mean-spirited, pointless waste of resources at a time when such diversions are least acceptable.

I would expect a public reaction similar to that against Tom DeLay in the Schiavo case. But worse.

curious...from here on Electoral College

The electors meet in each state on the first Monday after the second Wednesday in December to cast their votes for President and Vice President. The votes are documented on Certificates of Vote, and the execution of these certificates is witnessed by the Governor, who sends the certificates to the President of the Senate and the Archivist of the United States. As the Certificates of Vote are delivered to the National Archives, attorneys examine the certificates for legal sufficiency. They then make copies available to the public and secure the originals.

The Most Anti-American Nation

Dear President-Elect Obama: As you take office, I am enthusiastically watching your desire to win hearts and minds around the world. But I am concerned in particular about Turkey. This nation is the embodiment of what the United States and the West want to achieve around the world. It is predominantly Muslim, yet Western and democratic. But the Turks are vehemently anti-American, so much so that they consistently rank in polls as the most anti-American country in the world. According to the Pew Center's latest poll, only 12 percent of the Turks like the United States -- fewer, even, than the percentage of Pakistanis. Obamania in Turkey will help you change America's image, but given the dismal numbers, I am afraid that might not be enough. Despite the close cooperation with the United States on Iraq, Turkey's ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) government has taken the easy way, bashing America at home in an attempt to boost its own popularity. But you should not ignore Turkey. Because of its strategic location, Turkey is a key partner to the United States in tackling many foreign-policy challenges. You will need Turkish support and the Turkish base at Incirlik to achieve many of your goals, such as withdrawing troops from Iraq.

So allow me to make some suggestions on tackling anti-Americanism in Turkey.

Nope

David Rice Atchison was president for one day.

So technically, everyone from #13 Taylor on forward should have a different number.

James K Polk ended his term on March 4th, as prescribed. But that was a SUnday, and Zack Taylor was a religious man and refused to be sworn in on a Sunday, so he was sworn in on Monday.

During the interval, who was president?

The VP had stepped down too. Under the law, the Presidency then fell to the President Pro Tem of the Senate, David Rice Atchison.

Although he was never sworn in.

Just a little story here. This past Saturday I had to pick up my eldest son at a computer science competition hald at a very distant school. It was held at Waller High School which is about 30 miles North West of Houston and is really out in the country. Well #1 son's competition was delayed so I had to cool my jets and wait in the school cafeteria. I started to wander the halls. Along one long hallway, and it was obviously from some class, the kids had pictures of just about every local person who had ever served in the military dating back to WWI. The wall was named the Hero wall. They had obviously contacted people and gotten these pictures, some with the person in their late teens in uniform and underneath was a little description of what the person had done, what their military service had been, what medals, if any they had won, and if they had been killed in action or how long they had lived. It was quite poignant. There were more women than I thought there would be, and quite a few from WWII and Korea. In fact, I noticed that there was quite a bit of diversity not only in gender but in race. Most of the people had rather bland service records but it was really nice to see what ever they had done being recognized. It was interesting because most of the WWI, WWII pictures were formal poses in uniform but by the time my war (Vietnam) rolled around many of the pictures were of GI's lounging around.

Clearly the students, or the class that had done this, had taken a lot of time and they had done this with real care. I was quite touched that a high school and high school students would do this.

perhaps it's this...?

Certificates of Ascertainment
Immediately after Election Day, the Governors of each state and the Mayor of the District of Columbia prepare Certificates of Ascertainment that identify their slate of electors. The states send these certificates by registered mail to the Archivist of the United States who is required by law to administer the Electoral College. As the Archivist and the Office of the Federal Register receive the Certificates of Ascertainment from each state, attorneys check them for facial legal sufficiency. When all certificates are received, the Federal Register makes copies available for public inspection and transmits certificates to each House of Congress.

Oh, that's right. GM is is huge sponsor of Hannity's! So much for intellectual consistency. ;-)

Since it was Buchanan, did he advocate seizing the assets of "the neocons" (wink, wink) to pay for the bailout?

Well, at least she doesn't have to worry about lint. Reminds me of the bad TV movie, Genesis II (written by Gene Roddenberry!), where Mariette Hartley's character, "Lyra-a" (pronounced "LEAR-uh-AH") has two belly buttons (she's a clone).

...and had someone pushed her off a bridge they could have been charged for making an obscene clone fall?

In defending the Detroit bailout, Hannity said, "We can't afford to lose 300,000 jobs." I'd say Detroit Big Three management should have figured that out twenty years ago, maybe more. Can the taxpayers afford to carry 300,000 unproductive Detroit jobs that pay more (including benefits and pensions) than most taxpayers make?

I agree totally. We should let the autos go into Chapter 11 reorganization and get those union contracts back to some semblence of what the market will support. Apparently the Japanese companies can find workers.

In any case, I suspect the taxpayers are going to end up footing the bill for the pension plans of retired workers.

What a fish story... I can't get the taste of vomit out of my mouth.

But he was probably dodging sniper bullets all over the place for those six seconds. And and and, um, well, he's a really cool looking dude.

They probably then drive it to their local protest in support of the union workers. My somewhat moonbat son has a totally moonbat girlfriend who is rah-rah union. When its time to get a car, does she buy a union made car? Not on your life. She gets a non-union made Japcrap. I think the recent Ace of Spades piece on the difference between liberals and conservatives on loyalty matters was pretty straight on.

Can the taxpayers afford to carry 300,000 unproductive Detroit jobs that pay more (including benefits and pensions) than most taxpayers make?

The problem is that the job losses would extend far beyond GM's insanely overpaid illiterate workforce. A whole slew of suppliers would fail, along with untold numbers of businesses large and small that depend on those knuckle-draggers to spend their earnings at their establishments. The ripple effects on the economy as a whole are potentially staggering.

One has to wonder, though, about a huge corporation that can't take a downturn of just a few months without bleeding to death. Especially when their top-tier executives are pulling down vast sums as a reward for riding a once prosperous company into a smoking hole in the ground.

I was totally opposed to the Chrysler bailout back in the 80s. They proved me wrong - paid back every penny of taxpayer money, and paid it back early. But it certainly appears that the industry as a whole has learned nothing from that episode, or any of the other regular, cyclical downturns it has suffered over the decades. If a loan - rather than a bailout - can keep the economy as a whole from tanking even more than it already has, I don't have much objection. But if the end result isn't long-term reform, I question whether it wouldn't be best just to take the painful hit of failure now and get it over with, rather than dragging it out for another ten years.

When I hear the President of Ford Motor Company making statements like, "We can't afford the R&D to develop better cars; if the government wants them, it'll have to pay for them," I feel like throwing up. Or slapping him. Whatever happened to market leadership, where companies spent their own R&D money trying to come up with innovations that anticipated market demand? Apparently, that model has been replaced by a corporate culture focused solely on personal gain in as short a time as possible, even if it means leaving behind a huge mess for those following behind.

China will be producing world-class cars on their own within ten years. Maybe it's best to let our auto industry throttle itself and simply be done with it now.

I want them to fail. I want the UAW to be completely destroyed.

I don't care how many jobs are lost, I don't care about the short term effects on the economy. Propping up a system as corrupt as the Big 3 is far more evil than letting it fail.

These are some of America's ever-shrinking number of manufacturing jobs we're talking about here, you know. The UAW is a plague on the industry, no doubt, but letting the Big 3 fail just to destroy the UAW will yeild LONG term consequences to our economy. . .not just short term ones.

I'm not saying a bailout is the right approach. . .I don't think it is, really. And at this point, I'm not sure ANYTHING can save GM or Ford. . .but if a good solution can be found, it would behoove our nation to maintain these manufacturing jobs.
