Hey does anyone out here know anyone at Gateway?
Seriously - I ordered and paid for a Restoration Disk on October 26th. Got a bunch of yada yada e-mails and tonight got directed to the Gateway Forum where I put down all the information again, said Becky employee #xxxxxx had told me on November 7th that the restore disk should be shipped to me via FedEx in the next 2-3 months. I received a reply from the "Forum" from a "Dean" that their records show that FedEx delivered the Restore Disk on November 4th under FedEx tracking #xxxxxxxxxxxxx.
I wrote them back, said I'd never recieved it, who did they send it too and would they please check with FedEx and see who the hell FedEx says they delivered it to.
No response yet.

Comparing the source between your current and previous post's comment forms, I immediately note a front-slash terminating the body of each input tag in the new form, not present in the old. There may be other differences as well.
Have you tried cutting the old comment form, pasting (to overwrite) on the new comment page, and incrementing the hidden comment post id value from 78 to 79?

Geek squad had a "new" motherboard, new CD/W system and new hard drive delivered. Installed CD, works just fine. Inserted new motherboard - kaput - apparently (according to Geek Squad tech who was doin' all this) Gateway musta reconditioned a motherboard, sealed it up in nice shiny paper and sent it out - but it's broken and can't put in new HD without the Disk that'll restore my OS and drivers.

How many here think that Al Franken will "win" Minnesota's senate seat?
Is the fix in like it was in Washington state when it was close and Christine Gregoire "squeaked" by Dino Rossi? If it is stolen what court is going to invalidate it?
Minnesota has a history of clean elections. The Republican governor, Tim Pawlenty, has been on TV over the past few days promising a fair recount. Based on what I've been reading, a reversal of Coleman's lead isn't expected, but, if it did occur, there's no reason to assume without evidence that it occurred for nefarious reasons.

Drivers License. One of the ways we know Sen Obama was born in Hawaii is because anyone without an out of State drivers license is required to bring in a Birth Certificate to get one. Obama drove here just fine. The State Dept Of Health has already confirmed he was born here. If there is anything about his BC that he does not want someone to see, it is likely inconsequential and an embarrassment in his mind only. Likely something the rest of us could live with without problem. Politicians are sometimes overly concerned about image.

Here's the story on the teen herself. The car she was in was racing with a teenager in another car. The driver of this other car had numerous complaints against him, but he always got off with minor fines and punishments because his father is a judge. The father/judge says his son will pay the full price for this one, but neighbors are skeptical with good reason.
Back in the '90s, when this first started happening, there was activity to get all sorts of laws, regulations and other means to stop it. After a few years of trying to stop it, everyone has basically given up on trying to prevent it. Now, we just wait to hear who the unfortunate victim is this year, and then move on.
On my street alone, which is just down from a bridge that goes down into a blind curve, I can point to 4 different memorials, all of which have happened since 2002!

For those who haven't seen it before: 60 Second Refutation of Socialism, While Sitting at the Beach
Last week, there were several comments in Carnival of the Capitalists that people would like to see more articles highlighting the benefits of capitalism. This got me thinking about a conversation I had years ago at the beach:
Hanging out at the beach one day with a distant family member, we got into a discussion about capitalism and socialism. In particular, we were arguing about whether brute labor, as socialism teaches, is the source of all wealth (which, socialism further argues, is in turn stolen by the capitalist masters). The young woman, as were most people her age, was taught mainly by the socialists who dominate college academia nowadays. I was trying to find a way to connect with her, to get her to question her assumptions, but was struggling because she really had not been taught many of the fundamental building blocks of either philosophy or economics, but rather a mish-mash of politically correct points of view that seem to substitute nowadays for both.
One of the reasons I took up writing a blog is that I have never been as snappy or witty in real-time discussions as I would like to be, and I generally think of the perfect comeback or argument minutes or hours too late. I have always done better with writing, where I have time to think. However, on this day, I had inspiration from a half-remembered story I had heard before. I am sure I stole the following argument from someone, but to this day I still can't remember from whom.
I picked up a handful of sand, and said "this is almost pure silicon, virtually identical to what powers a computer. Take as much labor as you want, and build me a computer with it -- the only limitation is you can only have true manual laborers - no engineers or managers or other capitalist lackeys".
Yeah, I know what you're thinking - beach sand is not pure silicon - it is actually silicon dioxide, SiO2, but if she didn't take any economics she certainly didn't take any chemistry or geology.
She replied that my request was BS, that it took a lot of money to build an electronics plant, and her group of laborers didn't have any and bankers would never lend them any.
All too many defenders of capitalism would have stopped here, and said aha! So you admit you need more than labor - you need capital too. But Marx would not have disagreed - he would have said it was the separation of labor and capital that was bad - only when laborers owned the capital, rather than being slaves to the ruling class that now controls the capital, would the world reach nirvana. So I offered her just that:
I told her - assume for our discussion that I have tons of money, and I will give you and your laborers as much as you need. The only restriction I put on it is that you may only buy raw materials - steel, land, silicon - in their crudest forms. It is up to you to assemble these raw materials, with your laborers, to build the factory and make me my computer.
She thought for a few seconds, and responded "but I can't - I don't know how. I need someone to tell me how to do it"
And that is the heart of socialism's failure. For the true source of wealth is not brute labor, or even what you might call brute capital, but the mind. The mind creates new technologies, new products, new business models, new productivity enhancements, in short, everything that creates wealth. Labor or capital without a mind behind it is useless.
Read the whole thing.

DUMB GROWTH: TRADING SUSTAINABLE WATER FOR THE FOOLS GOLD OF GLOBAL WARMING (Part 1 of 2)
Economist Tom Sowell once aptly wrote that "there are no solutions; there are only tradeoffs." This can be no better seen than in the recent enactment of California Senate Bill 375 which will unknowingly trade precious groundwater resources for "Smart Growth" anti-urban sprawl policies. Under this legislation water will no longer be gold in California; ethereal concepts about reducing "global warming" and producing "green power" will be California's new fools gold. It is little wonder that California is experiencing a "perfect drought" with the adoption of such policies.
SB 375 is a piece of legislation which requires regional planning agencies to put into place "sustainable" growth plans. It will require the California Air Resources Board to double the targeted reductions in greenhouse gas emissions that local governments must meet in its land use plans. More specifically, it will require that new housing development be shifted from the urban fringe, where groundwater resources are more abundant (San Bernardino County, Morgan Hill), to highly dense urban areas near public transit and light rail lines (Pasadena, East Bay) where local water sources are patchy and often polluted. The environmental intent of SB 375 is to reduce auto commuter trips, air pollution, and gasoline consumption.
However, the legislation will unintentionally result in more reliance on imported water supplies from the Sacramento Delta, Mono Lake , and the Colorado River for thirsty cities along California's coastline instead of diverting development to inland areas which have more "sustainable" groundwater resources.
This can be clearly seen by viewing the California Department of Water Resources map of Groundwater Basins in California shown at this web link. As can easily be seen on the map, the populous coastal areas of the state have spotty groundwater resources while the inland areas have the most abundant water basins to sustain new development.
For example, the City of San Bernardino in the "Inland Empire" of Southern California has such abundant groundwater resources that it has long-range plans to draw down its high groundwater table to reduce the potential for liquefaction (ground failure) in the event of an earthquake, construct lakeside developments, and sell the surplus water.
Even if we ignore for the moment that diverting housing development to urban areas will increase reliance on imported water from the environmentally sensitive Sacramento Delta, the policy makes no sense from even a global warming perspective. Look at the drawing at the link provided below which depicts the geographic profile of the "Urban Heat Island Effect."

gmsc Tue, Nov 18, 2008 12:00:42am |
DUMB GROWTH: TRADING SUSTAINABLE WATER FOR THE FOOLS GOLD OF GLOBAL WARMING (Part 2 of 2)
Concentrating housing development in already highly dense urban areas will only worsen the urban heat island effect and thus increase "global warming." The obvious solution from the greenhouse effect resulting from pollution is housing dispersion, not concentration.
Moreover, by virtue of shifting to reliance on imported water supplies California will need to generate more electricity to pump that water to urban centers located far from the sources of water. No doubt that electricity will also come from imported energy sources outside the state. Green power (solar, wind) cannot be used to pump water because it is too unreliable due to the unpredictability of the weather. Thus, SB 375 undercuts California 's Global Warming Solutions Act ("Green Power Law - Assembly Bill 32).
Fortunately, the new law doesn't yet mandate local governments to comply with the plans. No real changes are expected until regional planning agencies adopt the "sustainable communities" growth policies called for in the law three years from now. However, if cities choose not to comply, then state transportation tax funds can conceivably be diverted to compliant cities. That SB 375 is a license for greedy coastal cities in Democratic strongholds along the coast to capture the taxes of inland cities in Republican territory is never mentioned in the media. Environmentalism serves as a cover for politics by other means.
Laws like SB 375 continue dependence on costly imported wholesale water, say at $500 per acre foot (a football field of water one foot high which sustains two families per year) compared to cheap local groundwater at roughly $50 per acre foot.
That this piece of legislation was passed by "Green Governor" Arnold Schwarzenegger without dissent by local water agencies and even air quality resource boards, is indicative of how environmental policy often defies science and common sense and is based on powerful cultural images spawned by government and unquestioned by the media. Incredibly, the implementation of SB 375 will even be granted certain breaks for transit oriented development under the California Environmental Quality Act.
California is shifting from valuing water as gold to a Fool's Gold Rush to reduce global warming and generate green power. Unfortunately, the public has already bought the fake for the real gold thanks mostly to the media. Paraphrasing a Latin proverb, "(political) hay is more acceptable to a donkey than gold."

Yeah, the danger is big parks and conservation areas where there can be large, aggressive dogs. Or pit bulls, which I don't consider to be dogs.
My last dog got commandeered by my late mother. She (the dog, that is) was a little chihuahua-terrier cross, about 15 lbs and a great lap dog. My Mom babysat the dog a bit and the two fell in love, so I let her keep the pup.

While Disney certainly celebrates Mickey's birthday as November 18, 1928, because it's the release date of Steamboat Willie, it's not the first time Mickey appeared on screen. He was also in Plane Crazy, which was released on May 15, 1928. Steamboat Willie was the first sound cartoon, which is why it's considered more significant.

I've found that, if you can just remember a few classic lines from a cartoon you otherwise can't remember, usually a quick google search to find the cartoon's name helps. Plus, once you have the cartoon's name, a google video search will usually locate the cartoon itself somewhere online.

Besides being the last 'true' transcontinental, Canadian National snapped up the Wisconsin Central (which itself absorbed several smaller midwestern railways in the mid 1990s), British Columbia Railway, Duluth Missabe and Iron Range and Illinois Central in the last 10 years....and they're pressing hard to acquire the Elgin, Joliet and Eastern to help them bypass the Chicago-area bottleneck.
I think some Wisconsin Central crewman posted "I for one welcome our Canadian overlords" in an online forum...

Good morning, littleoldlady and Lizards in toto.
Well, they're starting early, aren't they? I especially like the bit about calling it the "Recreational Firearms Protection Act." In the end, of course, our "recreational firearms" will be "protected" by being locked up in a vault at the local (government-run) shooting range, where we may visit them on weekends- under close supervision, naturally.
(And while on a government "watch list" for ever having owned them to begin with, of course.)
I expect Orwellian NewSpeak to reach epic levels during the new regime'- and not all of it will emanate from the Lightworker and his chosen minions. A good bit will come from those on the other side of the aisle who are trying to suck up to TEO.
Oh, and if you're looking for a good manual can opener, I'd recommend the military-type P-51 over the smaller, and harder to manipulate, P-38. I've found it is easier to deal with due to my arthritis. I have several of both, however. One of each hangs next to my sharpening steel over my knife rack on my kitchen counter, and the rest are stashed in my various pocket emergency kits, my bug-out bag, etc.

Keys that jingle in your pocket
Words that jangle in your head
Why did summer go so quickly?
Was it something that I said?
Lovers walk along a shore
And leave their footprints in the sand
Was the sound of distant drumming
Just the fingers of your hand?
Pictures hanging in a hallway
Or the fragment of a song
Half-remembered names and faces
But to whom do they belong?
When you knew that it was over
Were you suddenly aware
That the autumn leaves were turning
To the colour of her hair?
Like a circle in a spiral
Like a wheel within a wheel
Never ending or beginning
On an ever-spinning reel
As the images unwind
Like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind

I know that feeling. Fortunately, the difference between a P-38 and P-51 at my local surplus store is the difference between twenty-five cents and thirty-five cents. In spite of the '51 being about two and a half times bigger in terms of "thumb area" than the '38. I rate it a "best buy".
I gave up on electric can openers after my last one blew its motor trying to open a can of Manwich. As for the crank or key-turned jobs, I have three, none of which will open a paper envelope, let alone a can. And the opener on my Swiss Army knife is mainly good for making a semi-permanent groove in my thumb. The P-51 wins by default- it's cheap, sturdy, reliable, and actually easy to use.
The '38 and '51 were actually first developed by a canned food company here in OH back in the 1920s, to be included in a flat of canned goods as a sales gimmick. They worked so well the Army adopted them in 1939, and they remained standard for the U. S. Armed Forces until the 1980s. They are still used by soldiers today (who get them at the modern equivalent of the PX, whatever it's called) because not only can they open cans, they make fast work of opening MRE packages, too. Not to mention driving screws, cleaning under your nails, etc.
I only "discovered" these little gadgets a year or so ago, but now I can't keep house without them.
cheers

Working from memory, I was reluctant to give Bannon the name 'Race', as I thought that I'd confused his name with his former occupation.

Can opener + Sarah Palinesque story...
When I first joined our synagogue years ago, Sisterhood called me to volunteer in the kitchen for some event. They had an old table-mounted can opener, the kind that opens gallon cans, and I had to open I-don't-remember-what so I used it. I grew up in a restaurant. No big deal.
All of a sudden I was a kitchen-hero, because evidently it took some people a long time to figure out how the thing worked. I was told, "You know, the major qualification to becoming Sisterhood President here is knowing how to use that can opener."
HA HA, I said.
HA. HA. The next year I was Sisterhood President.

The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest
An original production by Hanna-Barbera for Cartoon Network, it ran from 1994 to 1997. There was a girl in it- Jessie Bannon, Race's daughter. Thing is, she was by far the most likely of the entire group to resort to lethal force.

Well, let us see.
Mainly, McFadden (starting back for the Raiders), Jones (starting back for the Cowboys), and Hillis (starting back for the Broncos) are gone, with only a 5'7" Michael Smith (who is, admittedly, on track for a record setting year at running back) left.
Mainly, new coach and system, lack of talent, and general turmoil.
It was a bad scene when they ran Nutt off. Going to take a while to recover.

Good morning folks.
I know this is getting repetitive, but look for yet another down day for the market. The overnight futures are down, with the DOW down 151, NASDAQ down 28.25, and the S&P down 19.10.
For anybody keeping track, the DOW is now down about 1,500 points since The Messiah, The One, the man with all the answers was elected.
Of course, the market had serious problems already, but I would point to the week or so before the election, when it looked like McCain had a good chance of winning, and the market was making some nice gains. But since he won it's been pretty much bombs away.
I would also be remiss to not point out that he still has not selected a Treasury Chief. Don't you think, if you were President elect in conditions like this, that choosing the Treasury Chief would be one of the first things you would do to provide some assurance to the markets?
And the market continues to drop while Obama votes "present".

I'm getting a lot of emails from folks wondering if they should switch their money to precious metals.
I don't tell people what specific investments to pick, so do what you think is right. But I will point out that precious metals are more volatile than the stock markets, so they are not necessarily a safe haven either. There is no safe haven out there right now.
Fixed income is returning almost no yield and the markets are dropping.

What some people don't get (and I'm surprised Colmes can even feed himself he's so stupid) is that the market is basically a bet on the future. Right now the market is telling you that it does not like the future with Obama calling the shots and the De's in charge of Congress.
Back when Clinton got elected the first time, the Dem's were taking credit for any up day on the market before he got sworn in, and they said the same thing about the market. OK, if it was appropriate then,it's appropriate now.
Colmes wants to keep forgetting that the Dem's have been in control of Congress, and therefore fiscal policy, for over 2 years now.

If one examines subtextual discourse, one is faced with a choice: either reject Lacanist obscurity or conclude that the State is capable of significance. If dialectic neosemioticist theory holds, we have to choose between Lacanist obscurity and the dialectic paradigm of reality. It could be said that Marxist class states that language is fundamentally a legal fiction, given that the premise of Lacanist obscurity is invalid.
Many theories concerning subcultural socialism exist. Therefore, Foucault promotes the use of Lacanist obscurity to challenge and modify society.
The subject is contextualised into a that includes sexuality as a paradox. In a sense, Baudrillard uses the term ‘Lacanist obscurity’ to denote the dialectic, and some would say the fatal flaw, of materialist sexual identity.
Porter[1] holds that we have to choose between capitalist libertarianism and neodialectic narrative. Therefore, an abundance of theories concerning the role of the reader as observer may be revealed.
How much education did it take to make so much stupid?

I don't know, but I have gotten the distinct impression that sometimes the Bush silence at the left's relentless and ridiculous attacks was no accident. Ain't that the truth? Some of what they show is just plain ugly - the drawing is not smooth or easy to look at - the themes are ridiculous and usually center around adults too stupid to think for themselves. Jimmy Neutron is visually well done, but the adults are portrayed as clueless.

Businesses that hire illegal workers do so to save money on salaries and employee benefits and pensions, including health insurance. That shifts costs to taxpayers who have to pay to support overcrowded emergency rooms and social services that the illegals use because they don't have insurance.
That's why we should crack down hard on businesses that employ illegals.

re: #405 legalpad
Of course, but they will never admit it. No one asked Obama which Bush policy adversely affected the economy.
It was him just being there. Democrats -- including some relatively intelligent ones -- seem to believe that there is some sort of magical power associated with the presidency. The personality of the office-holder, his relative virtues and vices, determine the nature of the economy, foreign relations, domestic tranquility, and, in the most extreme cases, the weather. The world smiles on the right sort of leader and all is good; the world frowns on Bush and everything goes to hell.
Now there is some truth to this perception. The way a leader is perceived does have an impact on the market and foreign relations (albeit not the weather). As 3wood said, the market is a measure of faith in the future. But the character of the officeholder is not the issue: it is the matter of policy. And the president has no magic wand or special charisma that allows him to fundamentally alter economic and political realities. Indeed, one could argue that the president does little in the way of "decision making." There are choices among a limited range of options, but generally it's a matter of following the flow of events and trying to just stay on top of them. In other words, the president does not have the power to determine the direction things take, only the power to manage those situations as well as possible.
An arrogant man might believe that he has the power to change the flow of events in a decisive manner, and that his mere presence in the office will effect such a change. That is a foolish thought, but one the president is encouraged to have. If he takes the bait, the results can be disastrous. Never forget, Roosevelt's "decisiveness" deepened the depression and extended it; Carter's "charisma" brought us stagflation, political chaos, and encouraged our enemies' boldness.

My question about Bush was, why was he for this crazy version of immigration "reform" anyway? I always felt that the term "comprehensive" meant that they were going to piggyback something in there that no one likes. Why would Bush want something like this. It isn't fair, it isn't conservative, and it empowers the left - permanently.
