'Censored' Yet Somehow Still Whining

Weird | Tue, Nov 18, 2008 at 8:29:11 am PST

People banned from LGF for supporting fascists and/or being hostile obsessive jerks whine endlessly about being “censored” (with no sense of irony whatsoever) as the Infidel Blogger Awards nominates me for “Biggest Pro-Censorship Ass-Hat.” Apparently, speaking out against Eurofascists, and not letting the LGF comments pages turn into a racist cesspool makes me as bad as or worse than the Canadian Human Rights Commission and Mohammed Elmasry, in their strange little world of “anti-jihad” make believe.

Don't these assholes know the real meaning of "censorship"?

Yawn.

Ever notice how the people that accuse you of things like this are usually the ones that really practice it?

It's Charles' blog...if they don't like it, they can start their own. Which is much better than trying to institute some half-assed "Fairness" doctrine...

8 medaura18586  Tue, Nov 18, 2008 8:34:03am

That is a bit unexpected. I asked Pastorius to be removed from IBA a few weeks ago because I thought they were way over-the-top anti-Muslim. We got into an email exchange, in which he basically revealed that he was worried over Spencer for coalescing toward fascist elements.

Again, ignorance is not a card to be played by these people.

I guess expediency trumps all, if Muslims are seen as monsters, which is the kind of characterization that prompted me to leave anyway.

Last time I checked, this was YOUR blog... no one else.. you do what you want
if they don't like it start their own or read somewhere else. Easier choices as far as I can tell.

By the way, did anyone ever see this?

"Robert, can you answer one simple question for me. This would help a lot in deciding what is really going on here. Which European political parties do you UNCONDITIONALLY condemn because of their proven ties to racist nationalism?" (Walter L. Newton email to Robert Spencer sent on Friday, November 07, 2008 1:16 PM)

And his answer...

"Actually, I am fighting jihad, and have no interest in or intention to investigate these groups. Insofar as they are fighting jihad, I applaud them. Insofar as they are doing anything else, my endorsement is not implied." (Robert Spencer email answer to Walter L. Newton sent on Sat 11/8/2008 10:39 AM)

Oops. Wrong answer, huh Robert.

As I have always said, Charles, it is your house and you have right to run it as you see fit.

I guess insolvable internet arguments are inevitable but absent racism, I am not sure I would ever bounce anyone. I am not sure I care if you patch up with Atlas but Spencer, who should now be chagrined at Vlaams true colors has been fighting the right fight. 25 SpartanWoman  Tue, Nov 18, 2008 8:42:17am

I've always been very happy with the moderation here. It makes LGF a place where you can express views comfortably without feeling that you and your rep will be tarred and soiled by the presence of ugly remarks. Thanks Charles for your outstanding leadership and judgement. It's too bad there aren't more like you.

Just because people are online and sort of anonymous does not give them the right to spew forth every nasty thing that might cross their brains. Sad that that there is so little self- control left

26 strangelove  Tue, Nov 18, 2008 8:42:32am

Good on ya, Charles.

This place (the comments pages) was starting to get as foul as Lucianne. I've been called a traitor, an idiot, a liberal scumbag , you name it.....all because I'm willing to criticize the GOP and Bush's myopic policies. Some of the hard right in here are as bad as a any leftist in their blind commitment to failed ideology.

27 jaunte  Tue, Nov 18, 2008 8:42:38am

Since everyone is free to start their own blog, whining about being censored just shows that the whiners are too lazy to develop an audience.

Here's a hint: whining is boring. You can't bore people into reading your opinions.

28 medaura18586  Tue, Nov 18, 2008 8:42:45am

Forget whether you agree with Charles or not over the fallout. It's irrelevant in this context.

Just how in the world could managing your private blog be spun as censoring ass-hatness? You thought only CAIR types subverted Western freedoms to further their agenda? These freaks whom many here thought of as allies, just conveniently rewrite the definitions of free speech, subvert the cornerstones of individual liberties, so that they may justify a self-proclaimed right to spew bullshit on everyone's doorstep and be able to screech "censorship!" whenever anyone gives them the stick.

Somehow individual rights are only noble and worthy of preservation when their crypto-fascist religious supremacist agendas are not threatened by them.

30 Cast Iron Magnolia  Tue, Nov 18, 2008 8:43:43am

I haven't witnessed any censorship on here - and, hey! I down-dinged Charles and survived. (so far)

There's a weird blur out there with some people who feel that "Freed'm 'o Speech" means everywhere, anytime, all the time... even on private forums... and people like that aren't our deep thinkers.

Spencer is the run away winner for the "Best Infidel Blogger"

There you go.

Which means that they havwe given fully into the ideology of the jihadists, that of fascism. These fools think that you can fight fascism with fascism. When one wins though, all one is left with is a variant of fascism, not the freedom we so richly desire. And by allying with these fascists, all they do is give the socialist enablers more ammunition to claim the anti-jihad is a racist endeavor.

Spencer, Dymphna, Bodissey, I'm looking directly at you. You fools. You think that allying with these fascists is the right thing to do? Don't you remember what these folks' ideological ancestors did in Europe? You fools.

Charles, keep on doing the right thing and oppose this craziness. Regardless of what they may think of your work, we lizardoids believe you are on the correct path. Thank you.

42 tfc3rid  Tue, Nov 18, 2008 8:47:26am

Not worth getting upset over... If they don't see their problem, let them rot in it...

43 Right mind left  Tue, Nov 18, 2008 8:47:38am

Obviously they don't understand that it takes wasted energy and oxygen to deal with the kind that are banned here by Charles (thank you for having such standards). The pointlessness of arguing with someone who will not acknowledge fundamental rules of existence is painful, at best.

They are of the same ilk that exists with anyone unwilling to deal with 'A is A' and through twisted mentality thrive in that insanity that they can somehow change it without changing its definition.

Life is short, just like not tolerating a toddler in a tantrum. They learn fast if you don't tolerate it they can't do it. The problem is that all these folks seem to be toddlers who have been allowed tantrums and REWARDED for them so they think they have some valid justification.

Thanks Charles, I think deep down they are either indignant that you banished them forever (to the corner of the universe!) or totally delusional about being stuck in their obvious paradigm.

As a newbie (as of a couple weeks ago) I've found this forum to be the most fair and intelligent that I've been on.
From what I've seen, fair warning has been given to all with the exception of the overtly malicious.
Anyone can start a new forum.
I don't go into mill bars full of union workers and start talking about Republican principles for what I think are obvious reasons.
Same principle.
For what it's worth.

59 Last Mohican  Tue, Nov 18, 2008 8:50:17am

"Censorship" is a term that has almost no useful meaning, IMHO. If I write a screenplay and Paramount Pictures declines to turn it into a movie, have I been censored? If I figure out your social security number and post it on the internet, only to have my site taken down, have I been censored? If I walk into a shoe store and start shouting "death to the Freemasons," and the owner asks me to leave, have I been censored? This is Charles' shoe store.

The thing that always amuses me about people whining about being censored is that they never own their own website or blog. They mooch off of others to post their comments.

It's pretty simple. Charles owns Little Green Footballs. He bought the web space and the storage for the information. He has the right to censor or ban anyone he wants. We post here at his discretion. He could remove all posting privileges and could ban anyone here.

The thing to remember that this is not a free speech issue. The First Amendment says "Congress shall make no law ... abridging the freedom of speech...." While "Congress" has been expanded to mean "government," last time I checked, Charles isn't a government representative.

He can do whatever the hell he wants on his website because it's private property. This is no different than someone putting a political sign on your property. You have the right to remove that sign because it's on your property.

People don't understand that "freedom of the press" refers to the guy who owns the press, not the guy who insists that you have to print his opinion on it. Nor does freedom of speech mean that anyone has the right to come into my home and stick a manifesto on my refrigerator. Your freedom to speak is not my obligation to print it.

Not that I'm really keeping up with this censorship awards thing, whatever it is, but did anyone nominate Obama for attempting to have law enforcement prevent Stanley Kurtz from discussing his anti-Obama book on various radio stations?

Your house, your rules. I would think that would be obvious. I get tired of people screaming censorship on personal blogs. Like blogs are democracies. As far as I know, we don't get to vote on the content of blogs. They are the property of the owner. I should think that people would be thankful that a place is provided where people of different localities and backgrounds can get together and share discourse on topics that we have an interest in.

I would also think it's obvious that since you have been instrumental in uncovering several shady "doings" in the press that you'd be a fool if you allowed your blog to become a hatefilled cesspool (well it's called that already, but I mean for real) where you can be discredited by the content of a few nutcases.

So, I would like to thank you, Charles Johnson, for the gracious host you are in creating a wonderful and homey place where we all can gather and share our thoughts, experiences and philosophies in a non hostile environment.

They call this "censorship"?

Ask any former government office-holder from the Soviet Bloc about "censorship" and the people who were imprisoned and/or murdered on any pretense, just for trying to be heard.

If Charles were engaging in "censorship" nobody would be around to nominate him for this phony, hypocritical "award."

The problem is that the pirates have a nice cozy home in Somalia, where it's part of their frickin' economy. They have entire towns set up to service the pirates. No government to speak of means it's a lawless region. It's a failed state and that lawlessness means that terrorists can set up shop too.

The piracy aspect is just the tip of the iceberg, and the failure to deal with failed states in the past will continue to haunt the world for years to come.

Lieberman keeps committee chair

WASHINGTON – Sen. Joe Lieberman will keep his chairmanship of the Senate Homeland Security Committee despite hard feelings over his support for GOP nominee John McCain during the presidential campaign.

The Connecticut independent will lose a minor panel post as punishment for criticizing Obama this fall.

Lieberman's colleagues in the Democratic caucus voted 42-13 Tuesday on a resolution condemning statements made by Lieberman during the campaign but allowing him to keep the Homeland Security Committee gavel. He loses an Environment and Public Works panel subcommittee chairmanship, however.

The irony also, of course, is that while this Canadian allows a "vote" for the most "censorious," (and derides Charles), they also list websites which I would not be (at all) surprised to find taken off the Internet under Canada's anti-hate speech laws. Thus, true government censorship these "geniuses" have no qualms about...but someone who owns a blog and exercises/enforces standards, these idiots classify as "censorship" -- again, the sheer irony/stupidity...they obviously haven't a clue about what constitutes actual "censorship" -- must be a product of the Canadian educational system or what?

Blind woman threatened over unpaid 1-cent bill

"My question is, how come it wasn't paid when the (original) bills went out?" (City Collector Debora) Marcoccio said.

What kind of moron would even say that?

Years ago I heard a story about a woman who received a bill with "Amount Due: $0.00". So, she ignored it. She kept getting dunning letters, with threats to her credit, etc. She finally got so frustrated that she actually sent a check for $0.00.

The letters stopped.

I so don't care that I can't effen believe that I am even writing this crap.

Otherwise:

Nice to see that someone is finally demanding that the Palis fulfill their obligations set out by the damned Olso Agreement in 19 effen 94! (See Democasts spin off in the last thread) They were supposed to erase that crap as their first action, but of course Clinton called Bibi an obstacle to peace for demanding the same thing.

OT, but what the hell?

Blind woman threatened over unpaid 1-cent bill

Years ago I heard a story about a woman who received a bill with "Amount Due: $0.00". So, she ignored it. She kept getting dunning letters, with threats to her credit, etc. She finally got so frustrated that she actually sent a check for $0.00.

The letters stopped.

I thought at the time it was probably a joke. It appears not.

Maybe I read the same story - it was a detailed piece in Reader's Digest - a true story. It included fascinating copies of all the dunning notices and entertaining replies (that's what happens when a computer screws with a professional writer.)

re: #255 Bumr50

"Xenophobia' is a term used by people who support the illegal flow of people in this country.
There are proper channels.

And in my part of the world, there is no job an American won't do.

ILLEGAL immigrants are at issue. And most of the LEGAL ones agree.

Xenophobia as a term was conceived long before there was such a thing as a United States of America, much less when a controversy over immigration ever ignited in the country.

It is one thing to argue that illegal immigrants ought to not be given amnesty because a) such a concession would reward law-breaking behavior b) those who have entered illegally have not had their backgrounds checked and vetted and might constitute threats to security.

It is another thing completely to argue against amnesty because "Americans are losing their jobs as it is". The argument against cheap immigrant labor is as demented as any leftist's or union's argument against free trade. Any introductory economics course would teach you how indisputably wrong both positions are from a purely economic perspective. Free trade and free labor inflow helps the economy, and helps every "existing" American.

It's not so much about "there not being many jobs an American won't do". There's plenty of jobs Americans CAN'T do, not for the same wage as an immigrant for sure. Or other jobs that require unique talents...

That's not even the issue though. Most people's parents in this country, unless they are Native Americans, came here in ships from all over the world. How arbitrary to just close the doors once they are in to prevent competition.

I am a legal immigrant and I do not agree (with your statement above). After the abortion issue, the Republican Party's nativist platform is my major beef. Evolution vs creationism and the attitude toward homosexuals come after...

If censorship started to mean keeping one's blog away from becoming a sewer and a place infested with racist or idiotic comments then I'm sure most of us would fall in that category of "Pro-Censorship".
If censorship means not allowing such comments like this one below that is posted at Gates of Vienna, then I salute Charles for his censorship and for keeping this blog fascists-free:
Here is an example from Gates of Vienna. (I won't link to it here).

We need to clear our lands of Muslims like Fjordman says and isolate ourselves as much as possible from Islam. In the worst case we can use Serb style ethnic cleansing. It will be harder on them than on us.

To which "Fjordman" replies:

I don't think we should say stuff like that, it only hurts the cause

Then the first commentator replies again,

I will avoid mentioning the EC nomenclature if you wish. Regular readers of my comments will know what I think when I refer to "Elmstreet".

These are the discussions going on there. And that post is old, such comments just remain.
This is just ONE example, but there are so many of them and I won't post such crap here at LGF.
This is the kind of comments you get when you invite fascists and defend them. I'm very thankful this blog does not welcome people who want to discuss ethnic cleansing, post racist comments about the US president-elect, spread rumors, and defend European fascists whose records are still there on the display for all to see.

-Sorry for posting the above comments here, but I wanted to make my point clear.
Readers: Again, these comments are not quoted from LGF, they are comments from Gates of Vienna.

re: #309 medaura18586

Obviously "xenophobia" is derived from it's Latin roots. I'm sorry. I was using it in the context you put it in.

I just graduated from college and work two jobs to support my household. One involves frying food and burning myself doing for as close to forty hours a week that they'll give me without having to declare me full time. The other involves cutting, wrapping, and moving Christmas trees.

While I plan on moving forward with my bachelor's degree, the job market is not exactly bristling right now given the economy.

I can't disagree with you more when you take the view that there are jobs that Americans refuse to do. Do you have one for me?

If the economy continues to decline (which I predict it will) these are jobs that Americans will not only want, but need.

it's much more than a and b, it is the refusal to assimilate with americans. I am sick of spanish ballots, push 1 for spanish, mexican flags flying above the stars and stripes. These are the turn offs.

I don't think that makes a whole lot of sense. There used to be Italian ghettos, Jewish ghettos, Chinese ghettos, etc, where all those languages were spoken in pockets of the city in NYC for example. It takes a generation or two before immigrants can assimilate. You can't expect Mexicans to be fluent in English immediately as they cross the border.

On the other hand, the infusion of Spanish is very one-sided because no other immigrant groups are allowed in to even out the balance. If immigration were much more open, you'd hear people talk in all sorts of languages, not just Spanish, and you wouldn't think much of it. Also, if these illegals had feasible ways of legalizing their status, they would have much less incentives to "stick with their own" and would assimilate much easier/faster.

Also, if priority were given to immigrants who speak English, they would have an incentive to learn the language and apply for legal status.

But there is no practical way to immigrate into this country unless you are a) a millionaire b) linked to a US citizen by family bonds c) willing to be a wage slave for 7 years to an employer sponsor, which are not easy to find still.

Both our ears! Another pet peeve about computers is when I go into a store to buy something, and they tell me the computers controlling the cash registers are down.

I always ask - you mean you don't know how to calculate a sales price plus tax on your own. The answer is almost always "No".

But this is the worst computer-related error I've ever heard of.

[On November 28, 1999,] an Air New Zealand DC-10, carrying 257 people, crashed into the side of Mount Erebus, just a few miles from McMurdo. The plane was part of a 'flightseeing' trip that originated in Auckland, New Zealand. These trips, giving tourists the opportunity to see Antarctica, were once very common.

Air traffic controllers lost radio contact with the plane and hoped that it had made an emergency landing somewhere on the sea ice. No one knew for certain what had happened to the plane. A rescue mission was organized and shortly thereafter, a U.S. C-130 (the plane on which I'll fly back to New Zealand) spotted wreckage on the northeast slope of Mount Erebus. Unable to land, the C-130 crew reported their findings and soon a Huey helicopter put three New Zealand mountaineers from Scott Base, at the crash site. They found no survivors. Only 213 bodies out of the 257 people on board, were recovered. For this reason, the site has been designated a Special Protected Area under the Antarctic Treaty. It has been preserved as a tomb for the 44 people whose bodies still rest on Mount Erebus.

Many years passed before investigators determined that pilot error and faulty programming of navigational systems, caused the plane to crash in heavy clouds. The plane was traveling at 300 miles an hour.

PBS had a program that detailed how it happened. Basically, for years, systems updates patches had been done to programming. One night, an update was fed into the plane by a programmer who thought he was updating the original program, but he actually was updating the patched version. The tiny course correction he made was enough for the plane to hit the mountain. It was a cloudy day, so the pilot didn't realize he was heading straight for the mountain.

re: #307 unreconstructed rebel

Well said. Upding.

You have got to be kidding. You approve of medaura attributing opinions and attitudes to me that I do not hold? It's now okay for posters to just make stuff up and claim that's what another poster's opinion is?

I made one simple statement. I said that the proponents of amnesty for illegal aliens (NOT all immigrants) would find it a tough sell in this economy to claim that they are needed in this country to do jobs Americans won't do. I stated no opinion on whether or not that was a valid argument.

Since obviously medaura isn't going to stop smearing me, I may as well defend myself. I am neither a nativist nor a xenophobe and I resent being called such. I am in favor of immigration in general, but I believe the government has a right to control who enters the country. I believe those who are here illegally should be returned, through legal means, to their home countries. I favor a system in which all employers are required to verify the legal status of the person they would like to hire. I favor a secure border.

I also believe we should improve and streamline the immigration process so people don't feel the need to resort to illegal means to enter the country. It shouldn't take two years to bring one's foreign spouse to this country. I think the system should favor better educated applicants who have something to contribute to our nation. I believe mass immigration of unskilled individuals hurts the less educated and less skilled Americans, who find themselves competing for the same jobs that an immigrant will do for half the price. I believe it's wrong for American employers to exploit illegal immigrants by paying them less for the same job, often under conditions that no American will tolerate. If employers were forced to hire only legal immigrants, they would be forced to improve conditions because they could no longer hold the fear of La Migra over the workers' heads.

I realize that's a little long-winded, but it takes a while to express a coherent position, as opposed to flinging unfounded insults and accusations at someone you don't even know.

Time to revive the old joke about the Buddhist monk at the hot dog stand, telling the stand owner, "Make me one with everything."

The monk gets his hot dog, then hands the vendor a twenty. The vendor just pockets it. The monk then asks for his change, assuming that a hot dog can't possibly cost twenty bucks. To which the vendor answers, "Change must come from within."

/Someone is going to want their vessel back. They can pay a few million baksheesh or a few million more to hire a small army.

I am not liking this at all. Something smells extremely fishy with this one. There is no way on earth that these pirates had no clue that ship was not an oil tanker. They went and specifically picked out that oil tanker. One that was traveling well outside the "safe zone" that has been set up by multiple Navy's from around the world.

Maybe they got lucky on the cargo ship will all the T-72s and weapons, but this is way different.

Something is way wrong with this case.

re: #352 Killgore Trout

He also likes to use the term "smear artist".

Verbatim from Robert...

"I was informed that "Walter L. Newton" is here spreading his story about this allegedly "smoking gun" comment of mine.

Characteristic of the witch-hunt mindset that pervades LGF these days, Newton has ignored my explanation of the comment here:

[Link: www.jihadwatch.org...]

It's a long post, but search for "Newton" and you will find the pertinent material.

While Newton and others have repeatedly invoked my statement as somehow meaning that I would be indifferent to neo-Nazi activity, it was nothing of the kind. I would never work with neofascists or neo-Nazis or white supremacists, and would never endorse them.

What I was saying to Newton was that I am going to keep fighting jihad. I will never make common cause with neofascists. I am going to continue examining the situation in Europe in general, and VB, and sifting the evidence. But I am not going to turn Jihad Watch, as Charles Johnson has turned LGF, into a site devoted almost entirely to this question – and certainly not into the witch-hunting hatefest that LGF has become.

And evidence of this witch-hunting is in Newton's comment above.
Newton leaves out the fact that I have repeatedly and unequivocally condemned the BNP, LePen, and Haider's group in Austria -- precisely because of their racial policies. He ignores the fact that I have repeatedly and unequivocally condemned neofascism, neo-Nazism, and race-based approaches to the jihad resistance.

And while ignoring all this, he pretends that the statement I made to him in an email, isolated from everything else I said to him, somehow means that I am a crypto-fascist.

Walter Newton, Charles Johnson, and others at LGF are libeling me, repeatedly and enthusiastically, and attempting to destroy my reputation on false pretenses. Fair-minded readers should be on notice that what they read about me at LGF is just that, libel, and caveat emptor.

Cordially
Robert Spencer"

The bottom line is this. Spencer is talking out of many sides of his mouth. I have one single email with the thread of emails between him and I. Any one reading it will see that he concluded our conversation with the statement I have posted above.

Yet, in this post, he carefully concocts an alternative scenario. Nothing he says proves me otherwise.

"It's circular reasoning, since I said something against someone before, then I really don't mean what I said now, but no one understands what I mean..."

Spin away Robert.

If they were treated as equals and were made into Americans, if they felt like they belonged and were welcome here, if they had a legal stake in this country,.. all those would make them invest in the American economy. Even if they failed at that, their mere cheap labor is a great investment in the American economy, EVEN if they sent back 100% of their paychecks home, to Mexico.

They get paid in dollars, no? In Mexico they need pesos, no? The exchange rate makes sure the money gets eventually "reinvested" in the American economy anyway, even if they are not the ones doing it directly. Plus America is not at a shortage of foreigners investing in her economy. It's what sustaining the deficits. Maybe Americans need to save some themselves and invest in their own economy instead of drowning in easy debt.

On the other hand, the infusion of Spanish is very one-sided because no other immigrant groups are allowed in to even out the balance. If immigration were much more open, you'd hear people talk in all sorts of languages, not just Spanish, and you wouldn't think much of it.

Actually it's imbalanced due to a large influx of Mexican and S.A. Illegal immigrants, if Iceland were on our Southern Border instead, we'd be complaining about the invasion of the illegal Bjorks.

Bumr50, I greatly respect what you are doing.

But let me be clear -- immigration creates jobs, whether that immigrant wants to cut your grass or write software. Productive and profitable employment adds to the country's capital stock, which is what drives American productivity (we are able to invest more capital per worker than any other country in the world and have the highest average wages because of it). An increasing capital stock is the fuel for the American dream.

I remember all the motherfuckers waving the Mexican flag in the streets during the pro-illegal immigration rallies a couple of years ago. They don't want to assimilate. They want to change our culture to be more like their old third-world hellhole world. If I moved to Germany, I'd expect to have to learn German. If I moved to Russia, I'd expect to have to learn Russian. Why then is it too damn much to ask that the people immigrating here learn to speak English?

OMG, HEEEELP! A 'friend' just sent me this article by George Monbiot. I'm stunned that this person is this profoundly ignorant. Where do I begin?
[Link: www.monbiot.com...]

Full blown moonbat. An article promoting communism. I'm just sitting here stunned...mouth open....blood pressure rising....

I checked that piece out. To me, Mr. Monbiot's "Americans are ignorant hicks" screed is the flip side of the "Americans are mongrels" coin that comes from all too may Europeans. The fact that we elected a black man as President is bringing a lot of this kind of comment out of the closet. Here is a recent quote from an NPR story:

In the days following Barack Obama's historic election as America's 44th — and first black — president, expressions of congratulations and joy have filled the pages of newspapers in Europe. But mixed in with the glad tidings have been inappropriate, insensitive and downright racist remarks from politicians and journalists.

In Germany, Poland, Italy and other countries, statements about Obama's skin color by public figures have caused an international stir.

Julian Bond is quoted in the article, and I wholeheartedly agree with him, that we in the USA are eons ahead of Europe in confronting the issue of race and prejudice.

This brand of racism coming from Europe extended, in two different articles I personally read in the news, to Americans as a whole, who, according to those Europeans, are mongrels - not racially or culturally "pure."

Who knows if these remarks would have received attention if Obama had not been elected? But he was, and they have.

I have to say, my immediate reaction to these comments is similar to the kind of thing where you're fighting with your sister, but if someone ELSE steps up and targets her, you both turn on him. I immediately felt like stepping in front of President-elect Obama and saying - you gotta come through me to get to him, buddy.

This essay from 8 years ago predicted this mess and explains exactly why:

The Trillion-Dollar Bank Shakedown That Bodes Ill for Cities
by Howard Husock

The Clinton administration has turned the Community Reinvestment Act, a once-obscure and lightly enforced banking regulation law, into one of the most powerful mandates shaping American cities—and, as Senate Banking Committee chairman Phil Gramm memorably put it, a vast extortion scheme against the nation's banks. Under its provisions, U.S. banks have committed nearly $1 trillion for inner-city and low-income mortgages and real estate development projects, most of it funneled through a nationwide network of left-wing community groups, intent, in some cases, on teaching their low-income clients that the financial system is their enemy and, implicitly, that government, rather than their own striving, is the key to their well-being.

The CRA's premise sounds unassailable: helping the poor buy and keep homes will stabilize and rebuild city neighborhoods. As enforced today, though, the law portends just the opposite, threatening to undermine the efforts of the upwardly mobile poor by saddling them with neighbors more than usually likely to depress property values by not maintaining their homes adequately or by losing them to foreclosure.

Why is it wrong to expect people who want to move to the United States to do so legally? Other nations control their borders and immigration policies. As an example, I know an elderly Japanese lady who came to the United States after WWII. When she goes home to Japan, she gets a 90 day visa. And she better damn well be on the plane on that 90th day, too. None of this "overstaying your visa" shit that goes on for years.

And she worked in a munitions plant during WWII. She had been a cog in their war machine. She still has to get a visa.

Why is America held to such different (and IMHO harmful) standards?

You'd have thought he tortured the family dog to death. There was AFAIK no attempt to rationally discuss the issue, rather Charles (and by extension us) was vilified at the various sites. While the groups he had questioned were being praised without apparent concern for the factual basis of Charles' misgivings.

That is not a strategy designed to win over people who might not have been sure about the whole issue. Who are they going to hook up with next? Confederate Hammer? AB?

Actually it's imbalanced due to a large influx of Mexican and S.A. Illegal immigrants, if Iceland were on our Southern Border instead, we'd be complaining about the invasion of the illegal Bjorks.

Actually, there wouldn't be very much to complain about in that scenario, because Iceland has a tiny population with a nearly 100% literacy rate and many Icelanders (perhaps most of them) already have a significant degree of competency in English as a Second Language.

Whereas with Mexico you've got a very large population of potential illegals that is supplemented by immigration into Mexico from other L.A. countries south of it; moreover, many of the immigrants not only speak zero English, but come from the rural peasant class and may not be literate in ANY language, including Spanish.

The argument that illegal immigration is beneficial for the economy is completely morally bankrupt. Chattel slavery would be even better for the economy. The massive American illegal drug trade is greatly beneficial to the economy as well.

I can't say I am terribly supportive of any of those institutions. Just because something increases the quality of life for Americans doesn't make it inherently good. There isn't any inherent right possessed by American citizens that they deserve indulgent, comfortable lives built on the backs of exploited non-citizens that we live side by side with, or black market economies.

Yes, but it's only an observation, not an argument. The use of Spanish in the US is constantly falling. It is not a threat to our security. On the other hand, our apparently unsealable borders are a grave threat. See page 3 of this. (Caution: it's a .pdf)

Some of my ancestors were already here. That kind of makes me look askance at new waves of immigration. Especially the kind of immigration we are seeing in certain groups of minorities, who seem to want to bring their whole country and culture with them when they immigrate. We don't need to have little racially (and voluntarily) seggregated enclaves all around like the USA were the Balkans.

There are always acceptible standards that society brings to bear on citizens. None of us would voluntarily associate with (or employee) members of the Ku Klux Klan. My question is why do we condone others with racist or otherwise harmful ideologies/worldviews? Off the top of my head why should we allow anyone affiliated with La Raza, MS 13, or the Muslim Brotherhood into the country? No matter how pretty they talk.

Of course, you could've said similar about the (great-)grandparents of many Americans today, but the current situation with Hispanics may be different in that the influx is occurring faster than one can reasonably expect the newcomers to assimilate linguistically and culturally -- even assuming that all of them feel highly motivated to assimilate, which isn't always the case.

I was not arguing, I was explaining why immigration remains such a poser for people in general.

You have a number of good points. This issue isn't an easy one, and I don't think most of the talking heads try to thrash it out as clearly as we do, here. They're too busy propping up their points.

re: #466 Charles

Still over the top. There are a lot of people concerned about America's immigration policies, and they aren't all nativists or Pat Buchanan fans.

Alright. Buchanan made me sick over the immigration issue long before his anti-semitic views were aired out. I suppose in this environment any reference to Buchanan is tainted with anti-semitic allusions. That was not my intention.

I could have said "Then go and campaign for Ross Perot" instead. I also did not say or imply that whoever is concerned about America's immigration policies is a nativist, much less a Pat Buchanan fan. It's the rationale that matters, and "immigrants steal American jobs" is a nativist's red flag in my book.

I believe I made it perfectly clear that I do not paint all anti-immigrant positions with the same brush.

There needs to be reciprocal expectations in such relationships.

Wat too many of these countires south of our border have not done the right thing by their populations.

Any concession to Mexico needs to be predicated on them cleaning up their act too. How great would it be for everyone if Mexico was equally free and respectful of property rights?

Oh, man, you really wanted to jerk my chain :-)

Tookie was a fucking pussy. If he'd been a man, he'd have walked the talk until they excecuted him. The whining and whinging that went on just before his execution was pathetic.

Back in the '80's there was an Outlaw on death row down in, IIRC, Florida. Everytime they set a date for his execution, he'd shave his head and get ready for it. I can't recall what they did with him, but I remember the attitude. I hope I have that big a pair when it comes time for me to check out.

"Ploome", I must admit that I am shocked by the anger you seem to retain for me. This is especially true since I still think quite highly of you. It is not my intent to get into a personal pissing match with you over an issue from numerous days ago. It seems to me that the bottom line of this is that we disagree. To me that doesn't make you a bad person, nor does it cause to have hard feelings about you. I just accept that we do not share the same feelings on this issue.

If it is your desire to rehash that conversation, then I will do my best to explain my position to you again. If however, all you are looking to do is start a personal fight with me, then I am not interested.

As Sean Penn put, it is 'pre-emptive' censorship. If people keep saying bad things about him, then everyone will think he is a kook and not take him for the serious thinker that he really is. As such we should all just keep our mouths shut as he and his ilk defame others and make them look like kooks, with no rebutal in order for there to be no 'censorship'.

Makes sense right?

Dr. Douglas Owsley, curator for the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History and forensic scientist "reads bones like most people read books." He also gains as much knowledge from them. In No Bone Unturned: The Adventures of the Smithsonian's Top Forensic Scientist and the Legal Battle for America's Oldest Skeletons, Jeff Benedict presents a double story: a sensitive portrait of this extraordinary scientist and a thorough reporting of the landmark 1996 lawsuit, Robson Bonnichsen et al v. U.S. et al. Benedict admits that his initial plan was to focus on the lawsuit, in which a group of scientists sued the federal government for the right to study the remains of 9,600 year-old Kennewick Man--the oldest complete human skeleton to be found in America and claimed by the Umatilla Native American tribe for reburial, but shifted his focus after hearing about Owsley. The result is a fascinating account of how one man's commitment to science and knowledge could help rewrite North American human history.

Robert Spencer really has some nerve to complain, when I have posted not a single front page article on this subject, have limited my own public comments on the matter, and have even told a few people to pipe down when they started gloating over something or other.

And he whines about "libel" in the midst of a thread full of whacked out comments dripping with personal insults and hatred directed at me, while at his site, he links to a blog that's run by some seriously disturbed stalker types banned from LGF for posting comments about violence and other deranged activities. All while whining about "libel."

Blogger owners can point out a million times that the views expressed by blog readers don't necessarily reflect the views of the blog owner, but the bottom line is that the blog owners are held responsible for comments about these views online anyway.

Charles has absolutely every right to protect his forum by taking action when comments are made that he feels are inappropriate. These comments would reflect on him personally and on his blog otherwise. Sometimes they reflect on him badly anyway.

At this point, the kind of hyperbole and venting that a lot of people would like to do about various subjects in modern life belongs mostly in private. There's just no way of getting around this. Even text messaging isn't private enough these days.

Differing opinions are welcome (people agree, as well as disagree, with me all the time here. . .which is as it should be).

That's not censorship, that's simply working to keep the conversation from turning into a frustrating circus of trolls.

This included tests for TB and other diseases some of which would have kept her from being allowed in. She went through all the procedures required to become a citizen, a 5+ year process. Well I'll naturally take your word for it Charles - but my memory is that you did mention something about Spencer sending you increasingly strident e-mails - as I said I'll gladly take your word for it - it may be that you were referring to Jihad Watch - I've only gone over there twice since the recent unpleasantness but I just had to make the posts I made; it's one thing for them to be, as I so eloquently put it, STUPID, it's quite another for Mr. "Cordially yours" to say you've defamed him out here. In fact it's just ridiculous for him to say that.
We've had our disagreements over the years I've been on LGF (December 3 makes my 5th anniversary!) but I've NEVER seen you ban someone just because they disagree with you and I just couldn't be silent in the face of those specious attacks on you. To quote Kos: Screw them!

Reading the comments, I'm wondering who "Medusa" is.

Certanly seems to have them in a tizzy. My favorite whine is "He said we're all fascists! LIAR!" which makes me wonder what they made of the "supporting fascists AND/OR being hostile obsessive jerks".

re: #581 Tom on the rez

Charles does seem kinda "touchy" on some subjects (eurofascists and Southern christians). Awful quick to ban, rather than let them have their (sometimes goofy) say.

I think Charles' point is that this is not the place for eurofascists or intelligent design propogandists to have their say. Jihadwatch etc is where you go for that sort of thing.

That's medaura18586. She's got a few people in a tizzy, others in a state of permanent meltdown it seems. She makes an excellent contribution here imho.

I found her blog.

I think I'm in love.

I reckon I'm a bit late to come on this thread, but I'd still like to say to Charles that he should take no notice of the criticism of the banned.

For all it's worth, I'm completely with you on the care you take not to allow this blog to be taken over by any extremists of any kind.

Others, who think nothing of collaborating with one kind of Fascism against another kind of Fascism, are in fact entering what I call "a mutual useful idiot alliance". In such alliance every side considers the other to be a useful idiot to be discarded at will, and ignores the possibility that the other side may eventually win this contest.

Charles, you are absolutely right to avoid such alliances and to ban the trolls who would promote it. You don't need me to tell you that many are with you; you can see this in your statistics.

re: #589 blowtorch

With so many complaints why are you here, if I may ask?

Heh. This kind of thing always amuses me. "Free speech as long as I agree with it". Gotta agree with anat a couple posts up the line there.
