Recount: Norm Coleman’s lead over Al Franken shrinks

With the first day complete tonight in a state-mandated recount in the contest for U.S. Senate between Republican incumbent Norm Coleman and Democratic challenger Al Franken, Coleman’s lead shrank by nearly 20 percent.

Based on a Star Tribune analysis of partial recount numbers released this evening by the Secretary of State’s Office, Coleman lost a net of 41 votes and now holds a 174-vote advantage. He started the day up by 215.

These new numbers come after the state has recounted 18 percent of the ballots. They come from 27 percent of the state’s precincts. At this point, Coleman has lost 86 votes, while Franken has lost 45.

Observers for the two candidates together are challenging 269 ballots so far. Coleman is contesting 146, Franken 123. The challenged ballots will go before a State Canvassing Board for a final determination.

It'll be interesting to see how companies in general will handle paying out their dividends in the quarters to come.

In general, the dividends get cut so current yields are in line with interest rates.

In theory, it doesn't much matter, the dividend becomes retained earnings and raises stock price by about the same amount.

Philly is about to let us move on up to .45s instead of the 9mm Glock 17. I almost had a heart attack when they told us. I guess losing five officers in the line of duty in 13 months makes the brass "re-evaluate" things.

Even proof of Jewish lineage on the land for thousands of years, and non-political digs which completely comply with agreements made by the P.A. are described as "occupation" and an attack on the Arab people by Israel.

If a completely legal dig, in accordance with an arrangement agreed upon by both parties is described by the media as a slight against the Arabs, what hope is there that once there is a final agreement between the parties that creates a Palestinian state that it will be seen as enough?

Israel must give nothing, because even everything wouldn't be enough.

I'll take my chances with being fired. I'd rather not have schoolwork. Like BlueCanuck said, I learn more outside the classroom. Not even about the teacher in this case, I'm just sick of constructing graphs using stupid programs and commands. Give me the graph and I'll interpret it, that's fine. Don't make me create the graph and deal with the handling of hard data.

Good News, Really

Believe it or not, I think this picture is actually good news.

This is a little flawed, since we would expect a constant trend to be a constant percent increase each year, which would be upward curving on this chart, not a straight line trend (it would be straight on a log scale). Never-the-less, it makes a point (by the way, it is interesting the 1980's are considered the decade of greed on Wall Street rather than the 1990s, from this chart).

Here is a better way to make my point. We get a similar chart if we look at PE ratios for the S&P500 (the chart in the full post is on trailing 10 year average earnings).

Why is this anything but depressing? Because I get the sense that many people, without any other general indicator of how bad things are in the financial markets, are using the steep drops in the stock market as a proxy measure. The stock market looks like a disaster, so everything else must be a disaster.

But in a large sense, at least so far, all the stock market has done in the last 2 weeks is return to historical norms. This tells me that there is nothing about the current level of the stock market that is screaming disaster signals. In fact, the current level of the stock market is screaming normalcy.

Of course, this does not mean the drop will stop here. PE's in the worst of times have headed on down to 5 (which would be about DOW 3000, yuk). And corrections seldom stop at the mean - they usually over-correct on below the mean. But seen on these charts, this recent move looks more like the completion of the correction to the late 1990's bubble rather than necessarily an indicator of current financial disaster.

However, I have an interview Monday afternoon, doing something I think I'll enjoy. The only drawback is that it's a 45-minute drive away, and winter hasn't yet hit us with her worst. But for a $5/hr raise, I think I'll find a way.

Gathering the information wasn't the bad part. I had to parse out only what I needed, then import it, and then mangle the thread #'s and the time stamps (broken into 15-minute blocks) into unique ID's. Once that was done, the rest was relatively easy.

Even so, on my 2.5GHz dual-core AMD64, OpenOffice.org 3.0 takes a good 3 minutes to open that spreadsheet. Yes, I still have it. It's one of my better hacks. ;-)

Franken's gonna win. Already bought this election. Personally, I think the voters in Minnesota should be ashamed of themselves.

Look on the bright side.

It will be bad for the denizens of the Gopher state, but great fun for the rest of us to have this loutish orangutang disgracing the halls of the Senate for six years. Trying to be serious and productive will be far and away the funniest thing he ever did, and his salary will be a pittance compared to what brain-dead pop-culturists normally pay him for his lame attempts to be deliberately funny.

There is no telling what he will do. Given his sixties inspired penchant for intolerance, for example, we may see the first senatorial fist-fight since the 19th century. A cottage industry will spring up around covering his gaffes, goofs, ignorance, and thuggery. This will all have to be on the net, of course, since the MSM will cherish him as one of their own (which he is).

Does This Graph Make Sense?

Just playing around with it. The prompt is;

"Make a labeled scatterplot showing the relationship between percentage change in Gross Domestic Product per capita between 1970-2000 and percentage change in youth literacy rate in the same period"

I created the X-variable as the % change in GDP Per Capita by generating 100*(GDP2000-GDP1970)/GDP2000.

Then I created the Y-variable as the % change in Youth Literacy Rate by generating 100*(ylit2000-ylit70)/ylit2000.

Remember Germaine Greer, celebrated 70s feminist she-devil?

Believe it or not, the old crone is still alive and she surfaced this week in Al Guardian.
Seems she didn't like the admittedly odd dress Michelle Obama was wearing the other night. Called it a "butcher's apron" and accused the media of being "too high-minded to refer to it." Greer and Al Guardian could never be accused of high-mindedness, excessive or otherwise:

"Greer was a powerful voice of feminism in the 1970s, and her books were international best sellers, but over the past decade she has become better known for her contrary and controversial remarks."

That is; a bitter, shriveled up old prune with Trotskyite pretensions.

"When nature lover Steve Irwin was killed, she famously remarked that the animals would be relieved. She also described Princess Di as 'slow'."

She fits right in with the rest of the bigoted sluts who make up Al Guardian's notoriously vicious contingent of alleged women.

Shell-shocked veterans of the sexual revolution, all; they need therapy and meds, lots of meds, rather than a public forum for the display of their sadistic aberrations.

No, I didn't vote for Michelle's husband, but she is going to be first lady of the United States; and the sniveling insults directed at her by a washed up hag in a depraved British propaganda sheet could not be more offensive or irrelevant.

What really bugs these failed dominatrices of the left: Michelle's successful marriage to a powerful and handsome husband.

For some reason, I can't edit the text size on the graph. Seems like that might make it a bit easier to read. Otherwise, I'd have to drop some countries. I don't think they care much. It's moreso in the analysis of the slope and all of that. Causal, substantial, and statistical significance.

From The Corner this morning:

Whither Oogedy-Boogedyism? [Jonah Goldberg]

My email box runneth over with nice attaboys and more than a few interesting criticisms regarding my post about Kathleen Parker. Keying off some of the criticisms, here's one thing I want to know, as I sit here at the Whither Conservatism conference. What aspects of the Christian Right amount to oogedy-boogedyism? I take oogedy-boogedy to be a perjorative reference to absurd superstition and irrational nonsense. So where has the GOP embraced to its detriment oogedy-boogedyism? With the possible exception of some variants of creationism (which is hardly a major issue at the national level in the GOP, as much as some on the left and a few on the right try to make it one), I'm at a loss as to what Kathleen is referring to. Opposition to abortion? Opposition to gay marriage? Euthanasia? Support for prayer in school?

There are all sorts of legitimate positions on all sides of these issues and I don't necessarily agree with the conventional religious right view on all of them. And as a committed federalist, I'd like to see most if not all of them settled as locally as possible. But I think it's silly and offensive to describe the mainstream social conservative positions on these issues as "oogedy boogedy" stuff. Moreover, as a matter of political analysis it's beyond absurd to think the GOP can become a majority party by adopting a rhetorical tone toward religious conservatives usually found at the Huffington Post or the Daily Kos. I'm sure Bill Maher agrees with Kathleen. But normally, at least for people who call themselves conservatives, when Bill Maher agrees with you it's a sign that you took a wrong turn somewhere.

But it's pressing hard to invest in bonds and T-bills that return less than the inflation rate. I can understand, being one myself, those who simply keep looking for a rate of return greater than negative.

COPENHAGEN - At a time where anti-Semitic acts seem to be on the rise in Europe, a bill was proposed in Denmark that will affect mainly Jews – the banning of male child circumcision.
Denmark's National Council for Children has recommended the legislation of a law banning circumcision of boys under the age of 15.

The passing of this law would make the Jewish mitzvah and tradition of circumcising a child on his eighth day a crime.

What in the world?!

I would have thought the $US would also be at least somewhat, but its not. Any ideas?

Oh sure, that's easy. If you think we are screwed, we are on easy street compared to most of the rest of the world. We have more economic tools to fight this with (long story) and we reacted much faster than most of the rest of the world.

So investors around the world have been liquidating out of their local currency and buying dollars to then buy things like t-bills.

So, the dollar appreciates in value and the other currencies depreciate.

The US is still viewed as a safe haven in tough times.

I can't quite put my finger on it yet, but I'm smelling a rat. Yes, there's a lot of bad news out there, but this has been going on for months now.

re: #258 MandyManners
What's the origin of that word?

Mixed responses on that one. Whip "cracker". Saltine cracker (opposed to a brown graham cracker) I've heard others.

As found in the Century Encyclopedic Dictionary, 1910 version:

"CRACKER: One of an inferior class of white hill-dwellers in some of the southern United States, especially in Georgia and Florida. The name is said to have been applied because cracked corn is their chief article of diet; it is as old in Georgia and Florida as the times of the revolution. Also called 'sand-hiller'.

This being inhabits the Southern States under various names. In Virginia he is known as the "mean white" or "poor white." And among the negroes as "poor white trash." In North Carolina he fluorishes under the title of "conch." In South Carolina he is called "low-downer", and in Florida we salute him with the crisp and significant appellation of 'cracker'."

G'day from Down Under to {everyone}

Don't say g'day to an iphone! Gets confused with Aussie accents....

DON'T try saying "G'day" to an iPhone - it will think you want to search for a PA. And if you ask it to be true blue, it will start searching for Triple A.

Google's new voice-recognition search tool for the iPhone has problems understanding Australian accents, leading to some bizarre answers to spoken queries.

Users down under have noticed searches for the word "iPhone" can return pages of results for "priceline", "mustang" or simply a message saying "try again."

The number eight becomes a search for "ike", seven turns into "Clinton", and don't even try searching for the number six.

Google recommends the tool, which is available as a free download for the iPhone and iPod Touch in Apple's Application Store, works best with a North American accent.

and....

An Australian search for news returned the following results: movies, mutants, muse, and - with a Kiwi accent – music.

Google voice search won't understand Aussie slang like dag, sanger, or bugger. And even the word Australia returns search results for scalia or sharia if you say it like a local.

Hours of fun to be had with this iphone feature!

GMAC has now applied to be called a bank holding company.

That is so they can go to the Fed discount window and borrow money at 1%.

Another of the now you see it now you don't. One day a credit company not being accessible to bailout money. Tomorrow a bank holding company and the spigot is turned on.....

Can I file to become a bank holding company? If they give me a billion in bail out money, I think I might personally help the economy a whole bunch as I would not hold on to it, but rather inject it in numerous businesses as I buy everything I see and a couple of politicians on the side....a win/win situation....

I'm with 3 wood on this. I started watching ag commodities futures very closely last January when soybeans went thru the roof and there were riots in Jakarta. It made no sense. There was no supply problem. Then EVERYTHING went thru the roof - and the only thing I could think of was hedge funds fleeing the equities markets. It was simply not rational. Then the dollar started to fall against the euro. Why? No good reason. I'd like to say Soros - when economies start falling two things generally happen - industries get nationalized and/or they get really cheap and get bought by private investors. At heart, Soros is an ogliarch. He wants cheap stuff. And he's very very good on economic feedback loops.

At heart, Soros is an ogliarch. He wants cheap stuff. And he's very very good on economic feedback loops.

/he'll want to make Obama look good so we'll all benefit, no?

If you think we are screwed, we are on easy street compared to most of the rest of the world. We have more economic tools to fight this with (long story) and we reacted much faster than most of the rest of the world.

Iran is screwed. Iran's oil party is over, economists warn

Crude income accounts for 80 percent of foreign earnings, making the economy highly vulnerable to oil price shifts, and Iran is calling for a two million barrel per day output cut when OPEC meets on Friday. (Oct 23rd article, Rancher)
-------------------------------------------------- --------------
The budget for the year to March 2009 is 307 billion dollars, 25.6 percent up on last year, adding to concerns that the government's expansionary policies are stoking inflation now running close to 30 percent.
-------------------------------------------------- --------------
"If the oil price falls below 85 dollars a barrel for a long time, the government will have to make it up by collecting more taxes and this means more economic pressure on people," he told AFP.

Tax is the government's second biggest source of income but this month it faced nationwide strikes in major bazaars over an increase in value-added tax.

The protests led to a suspension of the tax, but the government has now drafted legislation calling for the staged removal of subsidies -- currently estimated at 100 billion dollars -- on fuel and water.

Cut those subsidies and the stuff will really hit the fan!

Job numbers not looking good - more pain to come.

All we have to do is give the Big Three 35 Billion dollars, so that they can continue to lose $1,000+ plus on every unit that rolls off of the assembly line. That should fix it.

Thanks, I'll email the quantities just in case it's not too late

Just have to find the directions again as it's one of those 'bit of this, bit of that" things without me bothering to look up the written recipe

Why are we allowing "pirates" to continue seizing ships? If we just sank several pirate ships, they would get the message they have to stop.

I really don't get that... was in the bank the other day, a very attractive young lady was texting while moving ever-so-slowly through the line. She could actually keep pushing buttons with her thumb, without looking at it!

She typed what seemed to be a few paragraphs into her phone. Could have spoken to the person in 20 seconds, and have been done with it. Instead, she spent nearly 5 minutes doing the "thumb-poke"

/shakes my head, as the yoots are losing critical communication skills

I'm lucky I can even answer my phone. Still don't text.

LOL! I'm with you - can't ever hear the thing ringing anyway and if I do I can't find it in my bag

As Mark Steyn said: "They lose money on every unit they sell, but they make up for it in volume".
