LGF: Now with Instant Karma Checking

Science | Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 11:32:04 am PST

If you’re registered and logged in to your account, you can click the icon next to the username in comments to show that commenter’s profile. Now included in the profile information is the “karma,” the sum total of all the “up” ratings Username X received, minus the “down” ratings Username X received.

This is similar to a feature originated by sites like SlashDot, purportedly another tool to help the community moderate itself. We shall see.

  • Comments are open and unmoderated, and do not necessarily reflect the views of Little Green Footballs.
  • Obscene, abusive, silly, or annoying remarks may be deleted, but the fact that particular comments remain on the site in no way constitutes an endorsement of their views by Little Green Footballs.
  • Posts that contain phone numbers, street addresses, email addresses or other personal information will also be deleted, as will posts that consist only of a variation on the word, "First!"
  • Comments that advocate violence will be cause for immediate banning with no appeal.
  • Disagreement and debate are welcome, but insults and abuse are not, and may cause your account to be blocked.
  • REMEMBER: posting comments at LGF is a privilege, not a right. Abuse that privilege, and your account will be blocked.

Whoa. If that's true, that means that someone has been *really* nice to me.

2 Kragar (Proud to be Kafir)  Thu, Nov 20, 2008 11:33:13am

Dare I?

3 Catttt  Thu, Nov 20, 2008 11:33:42am

WOW, Charles. That is really AWESOME.

4 WrathofG-d  Thu, Nov 20, 2008 11:33:58am

Wow. Now we get instant feedback on how popular or unpopular we are. I actually love this idea.....a bit scared to see how my "karma" is.

re: #3 Catttt

WOW, Charles. That is really AWESOME.

Okay, but so is your picture. Isn't that a new picture? I like the bubbles.

Just another way big Karma can keep us down!

7 Kragar (Proud to be Kafir)  Thu, Nov 20, 2008 11:34:47am

Holy Crap. I'M OVER 9000!

Too bad Cog is gone before we got to play with his Karma

9 CynicalConservative  Thu, Nov 20, 2008 11:35:12am

I'm just posting so I can see how dismal my Karma is. Guess I gotta post more.

12 Ringo the Gringo  Thu, Nov 20, 2008 11:36:01am

So who's the most popular?

13 Walter L. Newton  Thu, Nov 20, 2008 11:36:17am

But what's the Karma scale? Do we have a bench mark to compare the metrics against?

14 HoosierHoops  Thu, Nov 20, 2008 11:36:26am

Well what about a government bail out program for dings?

15 vxbush  Thu, Nov 20, 2008 11:36:43am

re: #13 Walter L. Newton

Lol. As soon as I posted that comment, I realized that could be taken two ways. I meant the FEATURE is awesome, not my karma. :D

I've had that pic for a while now. That's my reaction to some really crazy troll comment. Heh.

21 Last Mohican  Thu, Nov 20, 2008 11:37:43am

Charles: I have 1152 comments and 1030 karma points. But almost none of my comments got any dings either way. What accounts for all the extra karma? Maybe the dings that my submitted links got?

Instant Karma

22 dhawken  Thu, Nov 20, 2008 11:37:54am

Wow. Now we get instant feedback on how popular or unpopular we are. I actually love this idea.....a bit scared to see how my "karma" is.

5,367 at this moment.

To be honest I really am not all that concerned what my karma is, or my up/down dings are. I won't stop saying what I say, or even modify it, just to be popular. Doesn't me I will be argumentative for argument's sake or a pain-in-the-ass with our host and fellow lizards.

28 Joo-LiZ  Thu, Nov 20, 2008 11:38:35am

I am VERY curious to see Cognito's karma rating

29 lawhawk  Thu, Nov 20, 2008 11:38:44am

Very cool. Now, if I could only monetize this, combine it with my bailout efforts of the First National Bank of Lawhawk, and the Pirate Collective, I might be able to quit my day job.

Dang! I've cost meself 'bout 1000 karma points with all those deleted posts and dings. Oh well, karma...

35 Ringo the Gringo  Thu, Nov 20, 2008 11:39:13am

I don't think that is the point of the Karma rating, although it might have that kind of an effect.

It's more-so just a really cool tool to gauge how thoughtful and/or agreeable a certain users comments are... Or how often a poster's comments hit a point on the head.

Don't ask me what the number mean since a high or low score won't effect what I say. ;)

114 Walter L. Newton  Thu, Nov 20, 2008 11:44:29am

I am going to petition Charles for a temporary bailout of Karma points. If you could give me about 7000 billion new Karma points, it would help my self image.

And then I could distribute them to other Lizards. Maybe I will get Killgore to do the oversight of distributing the Karma points, but not right now.

Just give me the Karma points, I'll worry about the details later (did you fall for that bullshit?)

Charles: I have 1152 comments and 1030 karma points. But almost none of my comments got any dings either way. What accounts for all the extra karma? Maybe the dings that my submitted links got?

Instant Karma

No, that's the accurate count of all the ratings you've gotten for comments. It doesn't include the ratings for links.

You know, I hate to admit it, but some lizards made a point of noting that the ability to upding and downding posts would results in a hierarchy of lizards based on the number of quality posts. If we're not careful, we may go that way. I would rather that karma not be posted anywhere else, other than on our info page.

132 CyanSnowHawk  Thu, Nov 20, 2008 11:46:07am

Would a ratio of Karma/Comments Posted be a better indication of this?
It would be sort of like a batting average, but not quite, since theoretically, you can have more Karma points than Comments Posted or a negative value.

133 ClosetConservative  Thu, Nov 20, 2008 11:46:16am

The current distribution of karma is clearly unfair to the working people of Little Green Footballs. If I am elected, I will institute a 4000 karma refundable credit in return for service to LGF.

My extensive research* shows that newer (post 2005) lizards have a lot more karma than old school lizards. It's a conspiracy! Now to figure out whether it's a soconspiracy or a fisconspiracy. Better hope it's not a neo conspiracy or the dreaded paleoconspiracy, because that would be frightening.

Here's an apology...

"How you have felt, O men of Athens, at hearing the speeches of my accusers, I cannot tell; but I know that their persuasive words almost made me forget who I was - such was the effect of them; and yet they have hardly spoken a word of truth. But many as their falsehoods were, there was one of them which quite amazed me; - I mean when they told you to be upon your guard, and not to let yourselves be deceived by the force of my eloquence. They ought to have been ashamed of saying this, because they were sure to be detected as soon as I opened my lips and displayed my deficiency; they certainly did appear to be most shameless in saying this, unless by the force of eloquence they mean the force of truth; for then I do indeed admit that I am eloquent. But in how different a way from theirs! Well, as I was saying, they have hardly uttered a word, or not more than a word, of truth; but you shall hear from me the whole truth: not, however, delivered after their manner, in a set oration duly ornamented with words and phrases. No indeed! but I shall use the words and arguments which occur to me at the moment; for I am certain that this is right, and that at my time of life I ought not to be appearing before you, O men of Athens, in the character of a juvenile orator - let no one expect this of me. And I must beg of you to grant me one favor, which is this - If you hear me using the same words in my defence which I have been in the habit of using, and which most of you may have heard in the agora, and at the tables of the money-changers, or anywhere else, I would ask you not to be surprised at this, and not to interrupt me. For I am more than seventy years of age, and this is the first time that I have ever appeared in a court of law, and I am quite a stranger to the ways of the place; and therefore I would have you regard me as if I were really a stranger, whom you would excuse if he spoke in his native tongue, and after the fashion of his country; - that I think is not an unfair request. Never mind the manner, which may or may not be good; but think only of the justice of my cause, and give heed to that: let the judge decide justly and the speaker speak truly. "

183 DeafDog  Thu, Nov 20, 2008 11:51:28am

For those curious few.....

The philosophical explanation of karma can differ slightly between traditions, but the general concept is basically the same. Through the law of karma, the effects of all deeds actively create past, present, and future experiences, thus making one responsible for one's own life, and the pain and joy it brings to him/her and others. The results or 'fruits' of actions are called karma-phala. In religions that incorporate reincarnation, karma extends through one's present life and all past and future lives as well.

So to extend the metaphore to LGF, Cogito's Karma paid off with reincarnation, right?

re: #195 Joo-LiZ

Okay lemme rephrase... I agree with you.

The point of the karma system is to show how "popular" a comment is.

However, being able to see the popularity of someone shouldn't make someone else change their views.

Kind of like in real life. We shouldn't conform our views to those that are "popular", because "poupular" doesn't always equal right.

As long as I don't go against lgf policies I don't give a flaming rat's ass if what I say is popular or not. Diversity of opinion is good for discussions as long as there is civility of speech and manner.

And I do agree with ya, I just don't do sycophant. ;)

I would like to see the total up and down dings on each comment. A comment may have been so controversial that it attracted 100 ups and 100 downs but it will appear as a zero, with no clue that it provoked so much reaction unless you click on the total.

I'm opposed to the karma feature. I'm not sure pleasing the crowd is a conservative virtue.

As I was trying to say above...

Pleasing the crowd is not necessarily a conservative virtue, but it is upto the individual to decide what motivates them. Having an accurate gauge to measure public opinion doesn't necessarily mean everyone will begin to conform.

Besides, so long as people decide to try to "conform", there will be equal number trying just as hard to be non-conformist. It's all Ying-Yang, everything balances in the end.

3. Ate ice cream.
4. Felt glad that I had the intelligence to buy a vehicle I can sleep in (and yes, that is one of my requirements in a vehicle - call me paranoid).
5. Need to shop for that gun I keep planning to buy. And ammo.

Addendum: I'd like to point out that I am currently using a damaged, swaying (I braced it) computer desk that I pulled out of the trash as a nightstand. So there.

Green Technology

This proprietary design allows consumers' to drive the car emission free for up to 50 miles (80km) a day provided the car is charged every evening. It's conceivable that if consumers follow this daily routine, they will only need to fuel the car but once a year. This means it will not only cut down on pollution and global warming, but on a consumer's gasoline budget as well. This Q DRIVE technology will provide a base for all future derivatives from Fisker Automotive.

This sets us up for a "Posting Quality" index. Divide your karma score by the number of posts you have. The closer to '1', the higher the perceived quality.

Not to be one of "those guys", but I don't comment as much now, as I do back before the "updings" thing was introduced (2007?).

So I have a lot of comments that were chock full of entertainment value, and garnered a lot of "virtual karma". But those comments had no opportunity to be updinged. I feel marginalized.

I can see but two solutions:
1) I will attain a respectful ratio of 1:1 if a mere 2304 people upding this comment,
2) I move to the DailyKos with all the other unpopular people.

Stinky, any way to tell who's got the best and worst?

Buzz has me beat by around 13k.....

Just sayin'.....

re: #411 buzzsawmonkey

You gotta sea monkeys every night, or you can't sea monkeys at all.

I remember that song (well, the original), but NOT because I was alive then. I absorb and remember details.

Did you ever here Ethel Waters' song "Take Your Black Bottom Outside?" We had an old 78 RPM of it - hilarious song.

I only have enough for the sea monkeys.

Do they still sell those out of the back of comic books? Along with Charles Atlas "dynamic tension" exercise programs?

Heh, the only first comment I ever posted (wasn't a "first" comment) was so poorly worded that I probably got at least that many down dings.

Not a problem. I found this after I'd posted. It's more than you really want to pay, but it'd be a real investment grade weapon. Of course to keep it at its maximum value you'd have to leave it sealed in its box. Where's the fun in that?

:-)

This is very elitist. Some have better karma than others. Charles, has almost 8 times as much Karma as I do. We need Karma Equality/LGF Justice...

We really should just spread the Karma around.

Let's form a union!

We can go on a "comment-strike" until Charles agree to pay us all 5 karma points per post.

Or my worthless airmiles...sheeesh!

Historically, I've done okay with airmiles. Although I haven't really tried to use them lately. Actually, yes, I did, to try to upgrade to Business Class to go to Argentina on vacation. They said, sure, we'll charge you 90,000 miles (which I had)... and a $700 "copay". Sheesh. No thanks.

Karma tax.
Redistribute the karma.

"I don't want to punish you for doing good works and having lots of good karma. I just want to be sure that those of us who don't give much of our income to charity, like me and Joe here, don't get reincarnated as slugs."
