Little birds sit on your shoulders,
All pure and white.
Little birds sit on your shoulders,
All lovely bright.

Men and times of evil,
Nothing more is right,
Little birds sit on your shoulders,
And sing me through the night

Thanksgiving is next week, so here's some Thanksgiving classics to help get you in the spirit of things.

First, we'll start with some short Miracle on 34th Street clips. Staying with the short clips, let's not forget Schoolhouse Rock's No More Kings, to help remind us why we're celebrating.

Since Thanksgiving is partially about getting together with friends, how about the classic Thanksgiving 2000 episode of Friends? It's the one where Chandler doesn't like dogs, and Ross is being driven crazy trying to name all 50 US states!

Finally, I'll wrap things up with two unforgettable Thanksgiving classics. First, here's the complete A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3).

The other classic can be summed up by its final words: "As God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly."

Read the essay. I address that issue (near the end).

People of a certain generation have more of an emotional connection to Nov. 22 as a sort of anti-holiday. Perhaps it is time to give it a positive cast, just for one year?

Anyway, Victory in Iraq Day is just a one-time only event. Like I said, read the explanation. Next year, we can all go back to moping again.

I thought that is what I was trying to imply. Reread what I said again. I answered a hypothetical with a hypothetical. I did not say that Obama was going to take our guns. There is a pretty staunch opposition in Congress and the Courts at the present time that would even make such an attempt prohibitive. Obama himself probably recognizes that it would be damn near impossible.

And my thought at the end was intended to quell the stirring up of any fevor for such a thing.

I'm just wondering what the trigger event would be. Would it be something like another Waco, or something huge like Obama getting rid of the right to own arms?

I really don't think it's gonna happen.

There are way too many 2nd Amendment scare tactics and conspriacy theories floating around.

The Supreme Court just gave the strongest re-affirmation of the 2nd Amendment EVER. They ruled it DOES refer to individuals, not just militias.

That ruling is going to stand for years and years. Obama can't just outlaw guns, any more than Bush could not overturn Roe v. Wade, despite the fact that he was opposed to it.

The best/worst Obama could do is wait until some justices retire, appoint a couple of anti-gun leftists, then wait some more years for a case to reach the Court system, and then take about 5 years deciding it. It will be another ten years at least before any threat to the 2nd Amendment could appear. And then, the new ruiling will be challenged by a new cases, and new justices will be appointed, etc.

I'm just wondering what the trigger event would be. Would it be something like another Waco, or something huge like Obama getting rid of the right to own arms?

What would cause, a vast number of Americans to say, "that's it".
Maybe the better question is; is there anything, that would cause us to do that?

Since I write science fiction, I'm used to thinking about scenarios that I actually consider unlikely but not impossible. That is the case here. Having said that, the most most plausible trigger is not action by the government, but inaction by the government. This could happen in the face of massive abuses by the kind of shadow government that could grow up around federally mandated "community activists" and similar groups who would have many of the powers of government but not the accountability.

I am thinking about things like the local advisory groups postulated as a condition for broadcasters to retain their licenses. These would function as censorship boards, but would not be directly accountable through constitutional processes. This has already happened in the banking industry, under the guise of inclusiveness, and it could be extended to all businesses and other operations that are in any way connected to the federal government.

Collectively, these kinds of mandate empowered activists could eventually coalesce into a major national force, commanding vast power over politicians, the media, business, and, last but not least, the mob. This is the critical mass, but the trigger will be an attempt by this shadow government to force clearly illegal measures on the rest of the population in defiance of the law and of whatever remains of the constitutional government.

re: #104 realwest

Manilow's "Mandy" was his name for a Quaalude.

I thought we covered this... The lyrics for the song were written by a guy named Scott English, who recorded it in 1971, several years before Manilow did (another guy, Richard Kerr, wrote the music). The Scott English version was called "Brandy." Manilow did much better with his version, which was released in 1974. But by the time he released it, Looking Glass had already had a blockbuster number one hit with "Brandi, You're A Fine Girl." To avoid confusion, Manilow changed the name of the woman in the song to "Mandy."

Legend has it that Scott English wrote the song about his dog. But, according to English, that's just a lie that he invented to get rid of a reporter who called him early one morning to ask him what the song was about. Others have speculated that the song actually refers to alcoholic beverages, in light of the lyric "stopped me from shaking." Me personally, I think it's just a really lame lyric, with no special significance.

It seems the United States' FAA has a unique device for testing windshield strength on airplanes. It is a gun that fires a dead chicken at a plane's windshield at about the same speed the plane flies. The theory is that if the windshield doesn't crack from the impact, it could survive a real collision with a bird during flight. The British wanted to test the device on a new highspeed locomotive they are developing, so they borrowed the FAA's chicken launcher, loaded a chicken, and fired. The bird not only shattered the windshield, but also went through the engineer's chair, broke an instrument panel and embedded itself in the back wall of the engine cab. The stunned Brits asked the FAA to re-check the procedure to see if they had missed something. The FAA reviewed the test thoroughly and came back with just one recommendation. "Thaw the bird out first."

Ever see the Mythbusters episode where they revisited the chicken cannon experiment? Previous one they said was doubtful. The retake they corrected to plausible. Actually had a college teacher that worked on testing of the DC 9 wing. Fired everything at it, including frozen chickens. Their conclusion was that the fuselage would fail before the wing did.

C.I.A. Withheld Data in Peru Plane Crash Inquiry

An internal investigation by the Central Intelligence Agency has found that the agency withheld crucial information from federal investigators who spent years trying to determine whether C.I.A. officers committed crimes related to the accidental downing of a missionary plane in Peru in 2001.

The August 2008 report by John L. Helgerson, the C.I.A.’s inspector general, could lead the Justice Department to reopen its investigation into the shooting, examining in particular whether senior C.I.A. officers obstructed justice or lied to Congress by burying details about the episode and the C.I.A.’s broaer counternarcotics program.

I disagree.

Quite simply factionalism is the historical trigger for a civil war. When a country splits along lines that are so diametrically opposed that no amount of negotiations or compromise will reconcile them AND both sides make provocations and and antagonisms towards each other then war is sure to follow.

That may be, but I don't see how this is inconsistent with anything I said. You are simply reiterating some general historical principles, the questioner asked for specifics.

Of course, when comparing a bird flying at about 30 mph hitting a plane's windshield when the plane is flying at 600 mph and a bird hitting a train's windshield, when the train is traveling at at 50-80 mph, you have to consider the different types of windshields.

Well, I guess there's the possibility that, although Barry didn't write the song, when he was choosing a suitable substitute for "Brandy," he picked "Mandy" because that was already his nickname for Quaaludes.

But more likely, I'd think, is that he first recorded the song in 1974, and then later decided to start calling Quaaludes "Mandy," perhaps because they stopped him from shaking.

Unfortunately, I've now got this mental image of a skinny, androgynous Barry Manilow in the 1970's, partying it up in his groovy shag-carpeted bachelor pad, wasted off his ass and ushering a steady stream of googly-eyed babes back to his bedroom. This is gonna make it hard to get to sleep.

And, the report from Mythbusters on this?

Episode 9:
A frozen chicken launched in a bird strike simulation can penetrate aircraft or train windshields better than a thawed chicken.
PLAUSIBLE*
Originally, impact time or force transferred was the same for both frozen and thawed chickens, but this test was not conducted using airline-qualified glass, which has a thicker consistency than normal pane glass. This myth was later revisited in season 2.
*The original result was "busted," but when revisited in episode 14 it was changed to "plausible."

Episode 14:
REVISITED: A frozen chicken will penetrate aircraft or train windshields better than a thawed chicken. (From Episode 9)
PLAUSIBLE
When re-visited, frozen chickens could penetrate sets of layered glass panes better. Listed as Plausible because it’s uncertain the original myth actually occurred.

Cool! If you're not already familiar with it, check out Earth Abides by George R. Stewart. Written in 1948, this was one of the first really plausible end-of-the-world novels. It is a thoughtful and understated character study rather than a thriller, but there are some powerful images and clever plot turns along the way. The technical extrapolation is excellent, probably the best in any of these works. I strongly suspect that King lifted some of the plot elements for The Stand, but the work is completely different in tone.
Btw, Pournelle and Niven are reportedly working on a new collaboration with the tentative title Lucifer's Anvil. I don't know if this is a sequel to Lucifer's Hammer, but it would be great if it were.

White Guilt Is Dead, By Tom Adkins

(Editor's note: This originally appeared in the Philadelphia Inquirer.)

Free at last, free at last!

Look at my fellow conservatives! There they go, glumly shuffling along, depressed by the election aftermath. Not me. I'm virtually euphoric.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not thrilled with America's flirtation with neo-socialism.. But there's a massive silver lining in those magical clouds that lofted Barack Obama to the Presidency. For today, without a shred of intellectually legitimate opposition, I can loudly proclaim to America: The Era of White Guilt is over.

This seemingly impossible event occurred because the vast majority of white Americans didn't give a fluff about skin color, and enthusiastically pulled the voting lever for a black man. Not just any black man. A very liberal black man who spent his early career race-hustling banks, praying in a racist church for 20 years, and actively worked with America-hating domestic terrorists. Wow! Some resume! Yet they made Barack Obama their leader. Therefore, as of November 4th, 2008, white guilt is dead.

For over a century, the millstone of white guilt hung around our necks, retribution for slave-owning predecessors. In the 60s, American liberals began yanking that millstone while sticking a fork in the eye of black Americans, exacerbating the racial divide to extort a socialist solution. But if a black man can become President, exactly what significant barrier is left? The election of Barack Obama absolutely destroys the entire validation of liberal white guilt. The dragon is hereby slain.

So today, I'm feeling a little "uppity," if you will. From this day forward, my tolerance level for having my skin color hustled is now exactly ZERO. And it's time to clean house. No more Reverend Wright's "God Damn America," Al Sharpton's Church of Perpetual Victimization, or Jesse Jackson's rainbow racism. Cornell West? You're a fraud. Go home. All those "black studies" programs that taught kids to hate whitey? You must now thank Whitey. And I want that on the final.

Congressional Black Caucus? Irrelevant. Maxine Waters? Shut up. ACORN? Outlawed. Black Panthers? Go home and pet your kitty. Black separatists? Find another nation that offers better dreams. Go ahead. I'm waiting.

Gangsta rappers? Start praising America. Begin with the Pledge of Allegiance. And please, no more ebonics. Speak English, and who knows where you might end up? Oh, yeah, pull up your pants. Your underwear is showing. You look stupid.

Black Fraternities? Seek diversity. Race card? It’s now the joker. Miss Black America? Get in line with all the other lovely ladies. Reparations? Paid.

To those Eurosnots who forged entire careers hating America? I'm still waiting for the first black French President.

And let me offer an equal opportunity whupping. I've always despised lazy white people. Now, I can talk smack about lazy black people. You're poor because you quit school, did drugs, had three kids with three different fathers, and refuse to work. So when you plop your Colt 45-swilling, Oprah watchin' butt on the couch and complain "Da Man is keepin' me down," allow me to inform you: Da Man is now black. You have no excuses.

No more quotas. No more handouts. No more stealing my money because someone's great-great-great-great grandparents suffered actual pain and misery at the hands of people I have no relation to, and personally revile.

It's time to toss that massive, obsolete race-hustle machine upon the heap of the other stupid 60s ideas. Drag it over there, by wife swapping, next to dope-smoking. Plenty of room right between free love and cop-killing. Careful, don't trip on streaking. There ya go, don't be gentle. Just dump it. Wash your hands. It's filthy.

In fact, Obama's ascension created a gargantuan irony. How can you sell class envy and American unfairness when you and your black wife went to Ivy League schools, got high-paying jobs, became millionaires, bought a mansion, and got elected President? How unfair is that? Now, Like a delicious O'Henry tale, Obama's spread-the-wealth campaign rendered itself moot by it's own victory! America is officially a meritocracy. Obama's election has validated American conservatism!

So, listen carefully…Wham!

That's the sound of my foot kicking the door shut on the era of white guilt. The rites have been muttered, the carcass lowered, dirt shoveled, and tombstone erected. White guilt is dead and buried.

However, despite my glee, there's apparently one small, rabid bastion of American racism remaining. Black Americans voted 96% for Barack Obama. Hmmm. In a color-blind world, shouldn't that be 50-50? Tonight, every black person should ask forgiveness for their apparent racism and prejudice towards white people. Maybe it's time to start spreading the guilt around.

The temperature at 39,000 feet is close to zero degrees Fahrenheit. Think about it... any chicken flying that high would be frozen solid.

That's precisely why you thaw the birds. Very few birds fly that high - even on long migrations, you'll be hard pressed to find a bird that flies above 20,000 feet. Most of them fly in the 2,000 to 5,000 foot range, so the bird problems are encountered most often during take-offs and landings.

Sweet, it's still in print!

By the title, I wonder if it is a sequel or a reboot? Either way thanks for the heads up!

I have been tempted to watch Expelled myself. Ben Stein is a very smart and very sophisticated man. I've been curious to see how and why he pulls off what appears to be promulgation of a viewpoint that is antithetical to intelligence and sophistication.

Nevertheless, I suspect the best thing to do in this case is avoid watching the movie with your dad, drop the subject, and hope it doesn't come up again.

Mayor wins sexist 'award' for inviting ugly women to town

SYDNEY: An Australian mayor who invited ugly women to move to his outback mining town, saying even they would find a man there, has won the top "award" for the most sexist public comment of the year.

Mayor John Moloney of remote Mount Isa was chosen by the volume of boos, jeers and stamping of feet that greeted his nomination at the annual women-only Ernie Awards in the New South Wales parliament on Thursday night.

Moloney won the Golden Ernie for telling a newspaper that his town, where men vastly outnumber women, was a place for "ugly ducklings to flourish into beautiful swans."

He called on large and "beauty-disadvantaged" women to flock there, saying he often saw unattractive women in Mount Isa who looked like they were enjoying life in the northwestern Queensland town.

"Quite often you will see walking down the street a lass who is not so attractive with a wide smile on her face," he said.

"Whether it is recollection of something previous or anticipation for the next evening, there is a degree of happiness."

Must be what happened in College Station, generations ago from the look of things.

Free Dr. Pepper, courtesy of Chinese Democracy!

Dr Pepper to deliver on its free-soda promise

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Dr Pepper is making good on its promise of free soda now that the release of Guns N' Roses' "Chinese Democracy" is a reality. The soft-drink maker said in March that it would give a free soda to everyone in America if the album dropped in 2008. "Chinese Democracy," infamously delayed since recording began in 1994, goes on sale Sunday.

"We never thought this day would come," Tony Jacobs, Dr Pepper's vice president of marketing, said in a statement. "But now that it's here, all we can say is: The Dr Pepper's on us."

Beginning Sunday at 12:01 a.m., coupons for a free 20-ounce soda will be available for 24 hours on Dr Pepper's Web site. They'll be honored until Feb. 28.

Dr Pepper is owned by Dr Pepper Snapple Group, Inc.

It's been about seven years since the dot.com explosion. This one may go on longer, but we will see growth when it's done. In fact after every bear market the bull market after wards tends to rebound higher then the previous bull market.

I highly doubt the smaller states would agree to give up one of the few means they have to effect elections- the Electoral College. No way I see that ever passing.

Why was it delayed and why does Dr. Pepper care?

The whole story behind the 15-year delay can be found at Wikipedia's Chinese Democracy article.

Dr. Pepper has been backing the band on its tours, and as a marketing strategy, they stated that if the album were released in 2008, they'd give everyone in America, with the specific exceptions of Slash and Buckethead (former Guns N' Roses members) a free Dr. Pepper.

Iowahawk introduces the Pelosi GTxi SS/Rt car:

[Iowahawk]

All new for 2012, the Pelosi GTxi SS/Rt Sport Edition is the mandatory American car so advanced it took $100 billion and an entire Congress to design it. We started with same reliable 7-way hybrid ethanol-biodeisel-electric-clean coal-wind-solar-pedal power plant behind the base model Pelosi, but packed it with extra oomph and the sassy styling pizazz that tells the world that 1974 Detroit is back again -- with a vengeance.

But the changes don't stop there. Sporty mag-style hubcaps and an all-new aggressive wedge shape designed by CM's Chief Stylist Ted Kennedy slices through the wind like an omnibus spending bill. It even features an airtight undercarriage to keep you and a passenger afloat up to 15 minutes -- even in the choppy waters of a Cap Cod inlet. Inside, a luxurious all-velour interior designed by Barney Frank features thoughtful appointments like in-dash condom dispenser and detachable vibrating shift knob. And the standard 3 speaker Fairness ActoPhonic FM low-band sound system means you'll never miss a segment of NPR again… With an MSRP starting at only $629,999.99, it's affordable too. Don't forget to ask about dealer incentives, rebates, tax credits, and wealth redistribution plans for customers from dozens of qualifying special interest groups. Plus easy-pay financing programs from Fanny Mae.

However, it seems that a larger percentage of New Mexican quarters are being collected than any other state. When a news team investigated, they discovered that many New Mexicans are keeping at least 1 New Mexico state quarter on their person to prove that their state is a part of the U.S.!

WASHINGTON, Nov 20 (Reuters) - U.S. economic and political clout will decline over the next two decades and the world will be more dangerous, with food and water scarce and advanced weapons plentiful, U.S. spy agencies projected on Thursday.

The National Intelligence Council analysis "Global Trends 2025" also said the current financial crisis on Wall Street is just the first phase of a global economic reordering.

The U.S. dollar's role as the world's major currency would weaken to become a "first among equals," the report said.
