Joe the Plumber Searches Were ‘Improper’

The dirtiest kind of dirty politics: Report: Records search on Joe the Plumber improper.

TOLEDO, Ohio – An agency director improperly used state computers to find personal information on “Joe the Plumber,” a government watchdog said in a report released Thursday.

There was no legitimate business purpose for the head of Ohio’s Department of Job and Family Services to order staff to look up the records, Inspector General Tom Charles said.

Investigators weren’t able to determine whether the searches were politically motivated, the report said.

I'd love to see the amount of evidence needed to prove that something is politically motivated.

Of course they were improper. And even if they were prompted by pure curiosity, the dissemination of the results was politically motivated.

Perhaps the searchers were religiously motivated. Someone had blasphemed The One.

Only Republicans are capable of conducting improper searches. And, of course, the searches were not politically motivated. Of course.

He'll have the paperwork set up so this becomes routine.

Amusing to see "progressives" whine about privacy laws, and civil liberties, yet stand mute as a common citizen was run through the ringer because the Chosen One walked up Joe's driveway.

On a not-so-side note, most Americans also don't realize all their private data (social security numbers, mother's maiden name, etc, etc) are shipped offshore to 3rd world countries such as India.

23 mattm  Fri, Nov 21, 2008 8:48:56am

If this was NOT politically motivated, then I a a bridge for sale. Really a average citizen question to The One Deal Leader and all of a sudden people look up info about him and leak it to the press before a election. No political motivation there.

24 harrylook  Fri, Nov 21, 2008 8:48:58am

"Improper." Meaning, ILLEGAL...

25 unclassifiable  Fri, Nov 21, 2008 8:49:17am

Come to think of it, I'm not sure anything has ever been proven to be politically motivated, seems that whenever that accusation is brought against someone it's rejected outright and replaced with a "noble cause" excuse.

Come on, so they dug into the guy's background a little. Who among us wouldn't expect the exact same treatment if we dared to raise our peasant's head and presumed to embarrass the Lightworker? Yesterday, I was up in San Francisco to see my dentist for an afternoon appointment (verdict - four watch areas, so I need to be careful and floss more.) I went to Union Square in the heart of the city, about a block from the dentist's office, to get an espresso at Cafe Rulli (it's a good espresso, usually.) As I sat outside at a table, watching people on the ice skating rink (they're doing that now in the Square during the holiday season), I couldn't help but overhear a loud and exuberant conversation happening at the table next to me. There were 6 guys talking about politics - all in their mid twenties to mid thirties, rather preppy looking, not exactly the dirt under fingernails type of guy...Anyway, a tall skinny grey haired one was discussing the fact that he was a journalist (SF Chronicle? I didn't really catch who he worked for), and they were discussing journalistic malfeasance and lack of objectivity in the last election. This guys response: "Ya know something? It's true, but I don't care. The fact is that I know much more about public policies than most people, and I can tell them what they need to know, because frankly I know better."

They can't figure it out due to being political hacks instead of real investigators. Real investigations call for finding the facts, and sometimes interpreting those facts to determine the motive that the perp had for the crime.

Political hacks find the facts then get told by the "boss" to shut their yaps and let it all die away. That way they both get to keep their jobs.

The media has gone far beyond giving Obama perpetual home field advantage, the wind at his back each quarter and last bats. They now have now entered into an evil bargain with the refs, umpires and linesman. This would be scary were it not for the fact that Obama machine wrote so many cheques to so many believers that when the cheques start to bounce in a few weeks even the true believers are going to realize that they were scammed. For example, gays in San Francisco are about to find out that Barak will soon turn his back on them, and not in the way they like.

I think a book was written about it.

The SF journalist was half-right.

Certainly he knows MORE about public policy that the vast majority of the sheeple.

But that doesn't mean that he knows BETTER what's good for them. (And of course, even if that were demonstrably true, it's not in his job description to make those choices for them. The theory and grand lie of modern journalism is that it's supposed to present facts and information so that an informed citizenry can make its own informed choices.)

Let me get this straight: LGF is against the government abusing its authority to probing into the private affairs of every-day citizens?

Yes. And according to the New York Times, so is the Bush Administration: New York Police Fight With U.S. on Surveillance

By DAVID JOHNSTON and WILLIAM K. RASHBAUM
Published: November 19, 2008

WASHINGTON — An effort by the New York Police Department to get broader latitude to eavesdrop on terrorism suspects has run into sharp resistance from the Justice Department in a bitter struggle that has left the police commissioner and the attorney general accusing each other of putting the public at risk.

The Police Department, with the largest municipal counterterrorism operation in the country, wants the Justice Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation to loosen their approach to the federal law that governs electronic surveillance. But federal officials have refused to relax the standards, and have said requests submitted by the department could actually jeopardize surveillance efforts by casting doubt on their legality.

Under the law, the government must in most cases obtain a warrant from the special Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court before it can begin electronic monitoring of people suspected of spying or terrorism. The requests are subjected to sharp scrutiny, first by lawyers at the F.B.I., then by lawyers at the Justice Department, and finally by the court itself.

New York’s department, as a local police force, cannot apply directly, but must seek warrants through the F.B.I. and the Justice Department. The police want those agencies to expedite their requests, and say that the federal agencies unfairly blocked the city’s applications for surveillance warrants, first in June and then in September. The disagreement, in which the Bush Justice Department has taken a more cautious approach than police officials, is something of an unexpected twist for an administration that has more often seemed willing to stretch legal boundaries to fight terrorism.

So it means they're just not paying out 74% of owed dividends? Are they trying to lose business?

Dividends are a portion of a company's profit that are paid out to the stockholders in cash. When a company is losing money, they usually cannot keep paying a dividend very long, although companies are loath to cut their dividend. This is a public recognition by the NYT that they don't have the profits, and thus the available cash, to continue paying out as much to their shareholders. Don't know why they didn't completely eliminate their dividend, given the amount of their losses, and their poor financial condition.

Indeed. Why bother with this stupid $25 billion dollar loan/grant/bailout package, when Congress could simply mandate that all US taxpayers purchase a Detroit-made car this year? Give the taxpayers 60-month low-interest US Treasury financing (conveniently charged to their tax withholding) and a randomly-assigned delivery date at some point within that 60-month window (to avoid shortages by spreading out the production evenly over that time).

At least you couldn't say this Government program gives you nothing in return for your tax dollars...

Apologies? That should be at the minimum. Suspension? The entire thing is sham as evidenced by the 'we cannot tell if this was done for political purposes' canard. The motivation is immaterial - the offense was conducting the search without a proper basis.

then mentioned to her that the show and the producer had been contacted by the FCC and told to keep a log starting now of all "political" guests--like the local commissioners or state officials--that they have on the show and the amount of time they are on...

Guess what is coming?

No attacks since 9/11. And hopefully not anymore even with O in office.

One can hope. However, the history of Al Qaeda shows that their highest priority when a new Administration takes office in Washington is to test it with high-profile terror attacks. I HOPE that there are no such attacks, but I EXPECT that there will in fact be a series of them in a whole lot of places around the world -- Indonesia, East Africa, North Africa, South America, Western Europe, and yes, North America -- specifically including the USA. Al Qaeda will want to put Obama into such a panic that he won't be able to order any effective and coordinated action to counter them, and instead will want to draw in America's appendages of power like the head, legs and tail of a turtle.

I am a special kind of pissed off about this. Where is the ACLU?

Isn't this exactly the fuck what they are supposed to be protecting?

I am calling them and asking where they h3ll they are.

The looters are winning.

I have sent my state senators and the senators of Ohio the following:

Senator [],

I am writing to you because I want you to see the email I have
sent my own State senators, [blank] and [blank]. I urge you to
further stand for the cause of justice and civil rights by acting
on this disgusting abuse that has occurred in *your* state.

Senator [],

I urge you to stand up for the cause of freedom and civil rights
that your party purports themselves to be the champions of. The
investigation and subsequent trashing of Joe Wurzelbacher (Joe
the plumber) after the incident of him questioning Barack Obama
is something I find disgusting and un-American in every way.

Not only was he hounded and his private life intruded upon by the
media in a very distasteful manner, but it is also coming to
light that in the form of a police state he has been unlawfully
investigated by officials of the state of Ohio. Please refer to this article:

[Link: [Link: www.columbusdispatch.com...]...]

A quote:

"Vanessa Niekamp said that when she was asked to run a
child-support check on Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher on Oct. 16, she
thought it routine. A supervisor told her the man had contacted
the state agency about his case.

Niekamp didn’t know she just had checked on “Joe the Plumber,”
who was elevated the night before to presidential politics
prominence as Republican John McCain’s example in a debate of an
average American.

The senior manager would not learn about “Joe” for another
week, when she said her boss informed her and directed her to
write an e-mail stating her computer check was a legitimate
inquiry.

The reason Niekamp said she was given for checking if there was a
child-support case on Wurzelbacher does not match the reason
given by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services."

Quite frankly Senator [] this stinks to high heaven.

You and your party have always said that you stand for the little
guy, this is your chance to prove it so. I demand that an
official investigation of the abuse of state and official power be
undertaken and that those found responsible for this gross and
outrageous abuse of power be appropriately punished. Please do
the right thing here!

America is not a third world police state, the constitution is a
document that protects the rights of the citizen against
unchecked abuse by our government, and that is the root of
what is happening to Joe Wurzelbacher! This cannot stand and I
call upon you to do whatever you can to bring this matter to
justice.

Thank you for your service,
ht

In fact, in addition to the apparent rush to return to the Clinton years, there is the hope and change of surrender via the effort to appease our enemies so they like us more.

The only threat the incoming administration apparently will act on is the threat of dissenting points of view and criticism of the administration.

222 jamgarr  Fri, Nov 21, 2008 9:28:54am

Motivation Schmotivation!

Aside from VERY limited inquiry into an accused's mental capacity and determination of intent to do the act we should never try to "get inside the head" of the accused in determining guilt or innocence. That's the problem with "hate" crimes. If society determines that the intentional doing of an act is a crime we should leave it at that. We should recognize the tragedy of a murderer having a brutal childhood or the anti-social consequences of a child being raised to hate a particular group of people but those kinds of things should not be considerations in reagrd to conviction or punishment - life's a bitch - just ask the guy you murdered!

1975 J.C. Penney catalog. I kid you not.

To understand how mindbendingly craptactular the 70's were, consider that you could purchase a fully stocked gay pimp wardrobe from mainstream middlebrow department stores.

In the mid 70s Sears and Penneys catalogs both featured sections on "smoking supplies." Basically bongs and hookahs.

Holy Cow! You're right! I remember "smoking" stores the family malls all across the country. They were a mixture of "smoking" supplies and sex "toys."

I hadn't really even noticed that those stores have looong since disappeared! In fact, I don't even remember any particular event that created the backlash to oust them.

I DO remember that casual drug use was so common it was even part of the comical themes in TV shows of the time. As was drinking...

Perhaps drugs just got caught up in the backlash against drinking that occured in the 80's...?

Renee Magritte's 110th birthday (just put cursor over the logo).
No I don't know who Renee Magritte is.

René François Ghislain Magritte (21 November 1898 - 15 August 1967) was a Belgian surrealist artist. He became well-known for a number of witty and thought-provoking images.

Investigators weren’t able to determine whether the searches were politically motivated, the report said.

In a related story, several investigators with the office of Ohio Inspector General Tom Charles were seen attempting to locate their backsides with both of their hands, an unnamed source informed LGF Reports.

"There they were, reaching around first with one hand, but that didn't work. Then they tried both hands, and that failed too", the source said.

Additional questions regarding these investigators' abilities to differentiate between their previously mentioned backsides and generic holes in the ground have yet to be answered.

You sound like my kids. They went to Target and bought long gym shorts for my husband (their dad) because he was caught in the time warp and they were mortified. They weren't even the shorty shorts, but those kids couldn't take it!

Investigators weren’t able to determine whether the searches were politically motivated, the report said.

Uh huh. Yeah right

re: #352 Dave the...

My daughters found an old picture of their long haired daddy wearing nothing but a pair of short blue jean cutoffs.
They like to have died of embarrassment!
I told them to look on the bright side. At least the picture wasn't taken of him sitting down!
;-)

I'm fairly sure Joe the Plumber's personal records were not searched before he showed Obama to be the socialist he is. But after the infamous "spread the wealth" incident, Joe's records were searched multiple times, yet it could not be determined if the searches were politically motivated? At what point does common sense take over? How effing stupid do these investigators believe we are?

Can you imagine the outcry if the person investigated had been someone confronting McCain on HIS tax policies? Can you fathom that the story would have included a reference to the finding regarding political motivation? Can you conceive that the person leaking the investigation wouldn't be fired? Instead, the leaker gets a slap on the wrist and this story will get buried in the pages of your local paper and ignored on the nightly news. Can't have anything tarnishing the Chosen One.

The best "Funkytown" clip is Brian Cranston in "Malcolm in the Middle" doing his skating number to that song in a spangly powder-blue roller-disco outfit.

I'll have to see if I can find that and watch it with the sound muted. That tune makes me want to jam freshly-sharpened pencils in my eardrums.

That would be it! It could have been worse. You could have mentioned "Got To Be Real" or "Funkytown".

Be right back. I've gotta put something on these hives.

Oh come on now! You have to admit that some of the arrangements on old disco songs were pretty elaborate.

From the article:

The report looked into 18 background checks into Samuel J. Wurzelbacher...Eight of the checks were done without any legitimate business purpose...

Hold on; they found a legitimate reason for ten background checks on this man? The article doesn't list a time period, but even if it was spread over a year--ten background checks? WTF? Is he applying for a job at NSC, FBI, and CIA simultaneously? Or are those "legimate business purposes" given for the searches fraudulent? The investigation doesn't seem to have reached deeply enough.

Joe the Plumber should sue and embarrass these officials publicly. When I was in government work this type of behavior if caught would result in a firing or a demotion, and no access to sensitive records anymore. Loss of public trust.

To not sanction this public servant sends a chilling free speech effect to normal people who saw Joe the Plumber on TV.

This is much worse than lying before a grand jury. This on the order of a Nifong type of misbehavior.

There are public officials though with a lack of character with regards to their responsiblities. They think their access to property records, jail records, voting information, tax information is a type of private entertainment for themselves and their friends. And you get the occasional evil one that enjoys shipping the information overseas so that it comes back untraceable to them.

380 gray skies  Fri, Nov 21, 2008 12:02:01pm

Wait a minute, someone in the great state of Ohio must be in a "State of Denial" if they think for one nanosecond that this wasn't politically motivated! In most companies, any type of 'unauthorized access' is cause for dismissal- period. Perhaps Ohio is testing out ' the new rules' that are coming in the Obama-nation starting January 20.

All Joe the plumber did was ask Obama a question that Obama answered honestly... And Obama has not condemned this invasion of Joe's personal business.

Heck, Obama actually seemed to be mocking Joe in clips I saw in the days following the debate.

Aww, c'mon, he wasn't really hacking. He was just goofing around, guessing at passwords, like trying to solve a puzzle. These inquiring young minds. Sheesh, these politicians' kids. What are we gonna do with 'em?

Silvergirl, who is still livid over the hacking incident, along with the "improper" searches on Joe the Plumber, and as sattv4u2 put it, the "unbecoming" Charles Manson massacres, the "ill advised" Hitler final solution, and the "immodest" Pol Pot regime.

Can anyone imagine the sort of invasion of privacy that would have occurred if they had access to his "centralized health records" in our soon to be coming government Hillary Care? A case of clap at the age of 17 would be broadcast on the same page as Palin's wardrobe.

Ms Prim and Ms Proper would like to invite Ms Jones Kelley for tea and crumpets this noon.
We should like to discuss the Ms Behavior as well as the Ms Management of Ms Jones Kelley and the rest of those Ms Fits at the state level in Ohio. Perhaps with some reason, we would enable Ms Jones Kelley to see her own Ms Understanding of the proper use of personal information belonging to one, Joe the Plumber and thereby convince Ms Jones Kelley to admit to her Ms Step. Perhaps Ms Prim and Ms proper could enjoin Ms Jones Kelley to move to Ms souri so as to avoid inevitable Ms ery in the state of Ohio.
