Germany Bans Al-Manar

The Hezbollah propaganda channel Al-Manar has finally been banned in Germany.

BERLIN – Germany’s Interior Ministry has banned Hezbollah’s television station on grounds that it violates the country’s constitution, a spokesman said Friday.

Interior Ministry spokesman Markus Beyer said Al-Manar television programming was forbidden under Article 9 of Germany’s constitution, which says that organizations cannot operate with the purpose of violating “international understanding.”

The Associated Press’ description of the bloodthirsty antisemitic content of Al-Manar is typically weak.

Beyer was not more specific on why the ban was instituted, but Hezbollah’s Al-Manar television is known to be staunchly anti-Israel and frequently broadcasts footage of Hezbollah fighters.

Here’s an example from MEMRI TV, featuring some “staunchly anti-Israel” Holocaust denial from Hezbollah’s “spiritual leader,” Ayatollah Muhammad Hussein Fadhlallah.

Germany's on a roll, although I know this will bring up freedom of speech issues.

But, then again, you can't yell "fire" in a theater. And channels like this may be instigating violence against Jews and others, and may actually be a danger to the German government.

Of course, this would never happen here, we have the ACLU to make sure of that.

4 debutaunt  Fri, Nov 21, 2008 9:42:28am

re: #7 buzzsawmonkey

You cannot falsely yell fire in a crowded theater.

Nobody cares what you yell if the theater is empty. And if the theater is truly on fire, calling the crowd's attention to that fact is a lifesaving act.

Er, I think you know what I meant, but thanks for that clarification Smokey. :)

Excuse me, Charles, but that is far from weak. Those are just the bare boned facts, and if I may say, facts are what they are. They are neither weak nor strong, just facts. The AP did it's job, I say.

that organizations cannot operate with the purpose of violating “international understanding.”

The bad news is that this is so vague a criteria that they could turn around and use it against good people and causes.

Ayatollah Muhammad Hussein Fadhlallah should stay out of Europe.
"Germany's parliament passed legislation in 1985, making it a crime to deny the extermination of the Jews. In 1994, the law was tightened. Now, anyone who publicly endorses, denies or plays down the genocide against the Jews faces a maximum penalty of five years in jail and no less than the imposition of a fine."

this is a giant step for Germany, taking a stand on the issue.
While official politics under Merkel is decidedly pro Israel, there are legions of moonbats in the population who believe that Israel is the oppressor in the region.

Just doing my bit for linguistic comprehension.

Oddly enough, Ebonics retains a variant of this old usage:

Romeo, Romeo, whuffo you Romeo?

Juliet:
O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?
Deny thy father and refuse thy name;
Or if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love
And I'll no longer be a Capulet.

Romeo:
[Aside] Shall I hear more, or shall I speak at this?

Juliet:
'Tis but thy name that is my enemy:
Thou art thyself, though not a Montague.
What's Montague? It is nor hand nor foot,
Nor arm nor face, nor any other part
Belonging to a man. O be some other name!
What's in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other word would smell as sweet;
So Romeo would, were he not Romeo call'd,
Retain that dear perfection which he owes
Without that title. Romeo, doff thy name,
and for thy name, which is no part of thee,
Take all myself.

Does it get any better?

After reading Thomas Sowell's Black Rednecks and White Liberals, I'm not suprised. What we call African-American culture is nothing more than the Borderer culture of the people who lived in the area between England and Scotland before the 1800s. It merely was transferred to Blacks.

This is from an article called "A Muslim Genius"
[Link: www.islam-watch.org...]

"The most famous of his discovery is that which is stated in the book named, “Evidence that the Earth is Standing Still.” This scientific research work was published by Islamic University of Medina, Saudi Arabia, during 1974. On page 23 of this academic research work he talked about his brilliant discovery and cited many references from Koran and Ahadith. He confidently challenged the age-old belief of earth’s rotation and quoted as follows,

If the earth is rotating as they claim, the countries, the mountains, the trees, the rivers, and the oceans will have no bottom and the people will see the eastern countries move to the west and the western countries move to the east."

re: #70 buzzsawmonkey

Thanks for posting the quote.

Note how essentially American that passage is, for it suggests something that was, in Shakespeare's time, near social heresy; that one can remove from one's self the tyranny of a name, a background, an inheritance, and not be bound by it--but rather that one can choose to be who one will be, unshackled by the inheritance or the expectations of the past.

It was that belief which drove the colonists to make a new beginning, free of the past, on the shores of the New World. And, interestingly, it is entirely antithetical to the postmodern, politically-correct belief so in ascendance now, that one is bound forever upon the rock of the group identity to which one is assigned at birth.

That people wear that identity like a warm cloak is no real surprise, unfortunately. It beats thinking, and deflects all accountability.

re: #74 fish

I was firmly behind this as a good idea until Walter brought up the free speech angle. That made me pause.

In thinking about it I have to say that the government is not telling Hizbollah that it can't share it's Death to Isreal agenda, They are just saying you cant use public airwaves to spread the hate.

So after my pause I am once again firmly behind this as a great idea.

yep it is,
and I appreciate the thoughts going into it from your side; but you have to understand, that Europe and in this case Germany doesn't work on the principles of free speech, like we do enjoy in this country. I believe that the US is the only country in the world which does allow it's citizens to say whatever they want. It's great, but it needs also a special cultural background, which Europeans at large do not have.
The rights of individuals are somewhat protected, but Europeans live largely by associations in society, may it be a party, social class, religion or profession, they somehow belong to a group. So, we shouldn't apply our standards there, it is a good thing, that the German Government tells it's citizens that it is not ok to spread hate through the airwaves.

Spencer is the run away winner for the "Best Infidel Blogger"

There you go.

Which means that they havwe given fully into the ideology of the jihadists, that of fascism. These fools think that you can fight fascism with fascism. When one wins though, all one is left with is a variant of fascism, not the freedom we so richly desire. And by allying with these fascists, all they do is give the socialist enablers more ammunition to claim the anti-jihad is a racist endeavor.

Spencer, Dymphna, Bodissey, I'm looking directly at you. You fools. You think that allying with these fascists is the right thing to do? Don't you remember what these folks' ideological ancestors did in Europe? You fools.

Now? Not so much.

I am not trying to comment on what LGF should allow, or be, but simply my inference from this that people just don't care anymore, or at least not as much as they used to. If you can't get people on LGF excited about Anti-Terrorism measures, then you can be sure that the rest of the Country/World are surely "past" that thing.

Medved had a guy on yesterday who did a nationwide survey with very basic softball questions about the government (How many branches of government are there, that kind of thing).

Our fellow citizens scored 48%.
The sampling of elected officials, however, was around 43%.

After a while the viewing with alarm gets somewhat repetitive. Maybe it shouldn't, but it does. And right now, we are in a sort of limbo, with the current administration dead in the water and the new one making appointments which, again, we can view with alarm or hope as we choose, but which will not reveal themselves by action for another two months at least.

Well maybe terrorists will become a hot topic again after Obama releases them and with sub prime rates still available out there, one moves in next to ya?

re: #190 buzzsawmonkey

I don't think that is it. I think the American public/World/West are actually "bored" of the W.O.T. Our attention span is too short for this type of War.

You've been around here, you know that this "boredom" is something that many here were warning would happen years ago. I am only pointing out that we are living in that time. We have become distracted by anything else, and are just "tired" of that whole War Against Islamists thing. This is exactly what has transpired in the past, and has allowed the Islamists to be so successful. They attack, we fight for a year or two, get bored, forget about them...they continue to march forward, make greater strides against us. Years go by. They attack again, we fight, get board...they sneak forward more...etc.

In my humble opinion, we can not make excuses for why we are ignoring the threat and are no longer concerned.

We got bored of a 7 year war, yet the enemy is fighting a hundreds, if not thousands year war.

No they don't. The liberal I know, the ones who voted for Obama, really think socialism is the best direction for our country. Not because of "free" stuff, because they think that the job of the government is to control more of it's populace's lives.

They believe that the government know better about healthcare, energy and resources and they are certain that more social programs are needed to make us a great nation OF THE WORLD.

I've come across this over and over for the last few years. Yes, of course, there are voters who voted for Obama without a good grasp on what his politics represents, but whether you like it our not, there are more people than you realize (or you want to admit) that are totally aware of his politics and what they mean.

That's the ones we should be concerned about. The are educated, have money, connections and the means to effect elections.

We have to stop thinking that it's all about a bunch of people who don't know better. It really about a large group of people who know too damn well, and they are on a roll, and winning.

I hope the military is thinking long term. But in America you need more than that. As Vietnam, and more increasingly O.I.F. has shown, the best way to defeat the U.S. is to get the U.S. population to require their military to quit.

If we get tired, or bored, or no longer care - and thus no longer have the will to fight - it doesn't matter what our Military is capable of doing.

Well of course they don't. It's not a matter that it doesn't work as well in some other country, they feel that it can be made to work better here.

Read some of the stuff in The Nation magazine. These folks are educated. They can argue with the best conservative, like a conservative, that socialism has had problems in the past.

But they can also lay out an argument of how well it could work in the future if we ingrain it in our country.

Trying to tell show them that it hasn't worked well in the pass is stepping right into their own trap, because they will agree with you and then tell you how the new socialism will work here.

re: #250 Nevergiveup

And exactly what example of socialism do they point to that has done so well?

Progressivism should be the definition of insanity. They keep trying the same thing over and over again, and yet it fails every time they try it.
Examples:
1930s Germany.
1920-30s Italy.
The New Deal.
The USSR.
The softer socialism in Britian, France, Germany, Sweeden, etc over the past 50 years.

None of these have been successful. Two went to war, one was highly genocidal, and another killed millions who it wanted to. Another made an attempt to end a depression, which was only ended by a major war against two of the examples. One of them practically killed most of the major manufacturing in a country while another taxed the living crap out of everyone.

Face it, socialism, whether international (USSR) or national (Italy), never works.

In my experience there are 'R's in the alphabet, they are just put where they don't belong. Like idear. That just makes my skin crawl.

Yipes! In my day, idea was 'ideah'! Where in greater Bahstahn are you? Seriously, just like any state, Taxachusetts has different variations of accents wherever you live. When I talk to any of my relatives (a few still live there) and friends? I almost need a translator!

I imagine that the accents there have been altered somewhat over the years. In NYC, the Brooklyn accent has evolved, and my husband does not have as Brooklyn an accent as he did decades ago. We live right near the CT border, and the accent here is less hard-core NYC. Our 4 kids still have the accent as they did growing up, even though they live in different areas in the greater NY-NJ area...yes, the Joisey accent has affected my 6 year old granddaughter, and the 8 year old sounds like she is from LongEyeland, as my daughter in law is from there, and the kids live there. My daughter is in Brooklyn, and my son in law is from the part of NJ that is near Philly...and my youngest son lives in Queens, in an area where a dozen or more accents are heard..he still sounds like he did when he lived here..seriously, I think the enormous influx of immigrants, legal and illegal has also had impact...but the bulk of illegals do not bother to learn English.

They are what freak me out.

And of course I am sure none of them intend to eat any Turkey on Thanksgiving?

Though I generally like Palin, the fact that she is careless enough to allow herself repeatedly to come across badly in the media does not speak well of her insight into how media impressions are made. I mean, sure, we all know somebody slaughters the turkeys we eat, but shouldn't she have realized that it would be a rather unappetizing juxtaposition for that interview? Hopefully, if she has a political future, she has some time to live these things down, but I would like to see some evidence that she is learning not to fall for this kind of not-so-subtle media game.

I know one who just hates rich people and thinks they should be the ones to pay for everything. And it's not because of study and thought on economic theories, it's based off personal experience with rich people.

Of course you have that faction too. But really, it's the educated socialist and progressives that are leading the parade. Those are the ones who create the campaigns, write the articles, develop the media, publish the magazines.

And the sheep, like you mention above, have all the support they need from these educated sources.

Obama did not get where is he is because of a bunch of sheep.

re: #267 Walter L. Newton

I agree. I think more hard hitting arguments should be made explaining the economic, philosophical and moral corruption of socialism. More is needed than a talking point.

Exactly. With liberals it always comes down to emotion. They cannot separate the rich guy they hate from the "ability to get rich" which drives our economy and gives us things like computers, cell phones, etc. etc. No matter how many Phd.s and degrees someone has, you can never forget that there is a little child inside all of them.

"What Can We Do"

Well 1st, I would say that one needed to point it out. Thus my mere complaining about others was not useless. I would like to believe that in a way I steered at least a few posters back to the topic at hand.

However, as to the second and larger question of how can we ensure that the public on a larger scale is aware of the actual threat against us, I suggest that we simply do what has worked and copy pages from the Left. That can be summed up as "Obsess". We first need not to be afraid to voice our opinions. The left is more than happy to tell you exactly what they think at any time, yet the Conservatives tend to be shy. We also should be prepared and not back down. It is ok to politely show the ignorant that Truth of the enemy we face. We should also contact our elected officials. The left does this en masse. We need to ORGANIZE.

How is that for a start?

The bias has been pervasive since at least the 60's and Uncle Walter that I have noticed. My parents and grandparents have talked about it before then. It only has been the last few years, though, that the bias has been recognizable to a wider audience because of the rise of multiple and credible alternative sources.

Partisan media has been part and parcel of our Republic since the inception, this supposed impartiality is a relatively new phenomenon.

I would posit that if the Fairness Doctrine does get resurrected, as seems likely, that should not be viewed merely with wailing and gnashing of teeth, but viewed as an opportunity to insist that liberal media bastions be forced to accept more conservative voices. That would be a start.

Expecting the Fairness Doctrine to be applied fairly and sensibly is quite a stretch and leap of faith. Just like with the history of Socialism the history of the Fairness Doctrine does not inspire confidence of a new FD not being used to suppress and censor differing opinion and speech.

It is better to try and fail than roll over and give up. And I would point out to you that there are more conservative judges on the bench now than there will be several years into an Obama administration.

No matter what there is a fight ahead and it won't be pretty.

OT -- it's unbelievable how everyone is all up in arms about the Palin/turkey video.

exactly, i remember as a kid gramma grabbing a chicken in the yard and wringing it's neck, then off it goes, whack w/ a hatchet. we saw so many chickens running around w/out their heads. scalding water bath and then plucking feathers.
we knew where our supper came from.
all the gourmet fools who shop for organic beef and fowl at whole foods should talk to their grandparents or some elderly people abt. the depression.
life was abt. staying alive. animals were killed. if you had domestic animals or could hunt.
and now these pampered elitists want to pretend that their food on the grocery store shelf comes from where? they, somehow, don't think abt. that.
just cast aspersions on those who deliver it to them.
these assholes won't make it if we end up like americans did in l929.

re: #347 FurryOldGuyJeans

The bias has been pervasive since at least the 60's and Uncle Walter that I have noticed. My parents and grandparents have talked about it before then. It only has been the last few years, though, that the bias has been recognizable to a wider audience because of the rise of multiple and credible alternative sources.

Partisan media has been part and parcel of our Republic since the inception, this supposed impartiality is a relatively new phenomenon.

Read the John Adams biography (McCullough). The "biased" (aka lying!) press has been on the edge of collapsing this country from the beginning. Reading about that made me actually feel better during the election because we seem to get past it somehow.

re: #349 buzzsawmonkey

Your comments about how the Liberal viewpoint has bleed into everything is spot on!

It is as clear as reporting anything bad as "Right" and anything good as "left", even when it makes no logical sense such as discussing National Socialism, or North Korea's Socialist Government.

Leftist ideals have found a way to corrupt our ability to think logically in almost all respects. It is getting close to a point where if you stray off the leftist thinking plantation, you no longer share a different yet equal opinion, but instead you are an "evil" person. You HAVE to think that Homosexuality is ok. You HAVE to think that giving to poor people is a RIGHT.

Laslty, it seems that every Leftist Value is being rewritten from a mere opposing view, into actual RIGHTS.

I'm wondering if some of the religious organizations doing this might lose their tax exempt status if they go on being PACs...

If anyone is interested in the justification for the ban: WELT Online reports that Al-Manar content was deemed to violate the concept of international understanding ("Völkerverständigung") which is a reason to ban it under article 9 section 2 of the Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany.

I am not sure how effective this ban will be since there are no german representatives or owners of Al-Manar and it's satelite TV anyway...

369 dbe928  Fri, Nov 21, 2008 5:41:00pm

I, for one, am glad Al-Manar got taken off the air in Germany, though I wonder, with satellite, internet, direct-tv and other delivery options, how effective that really is. I am also grateful to MEMRI, because without that organization we would have no idea what some of these crazy stations are saying. The teaching of hate is so prevalent in many Arab countries, it makes me wonder how long it will take to raise a generation of "normal" kids who aren't taught that the Jews must be killed.

370 spud  Fri, Nov 21, 2008 9:45:39pm

Me thinks making this required viewing would've been better than banning.

Know your enemy.
