A samurai once asked Zen Master Hakuin where he would go after he died. Hakuin answered “How am I supposed to know?”

“How do you not know? You’re a Zen master!” exclaimed the samurai.

“Yes, but not a dead one,” Hakuin answered.

Hasn't it been customary in the past to wait until someone has died to offer this kind of honor? I know postage stamps, by law, can only honor dead people. Every time I go to the post office, I stand in line and point to the pictures of the stamps and say...

What in the world?!

In the past, foreclosed houses with FMy, FMk, HUD, VA backing, were serviced by multiple small "handy man" firms all across the nation. There was a list of how much the agency would pay for a boarding up or a grass cut or a lock change etc.

And of course, some of this work had to be done on an ongoing basis (such as lawn cutting or snow removal).

This doesn't make sense. I worked as a programmer for one of these firms that "jobbed" out the work to handy men all around the country. I can assure you this is going to cost the taxpayers MORE than it would have if they continued to toss the work to the small contractors and handy men.

WaPo editorial this morning about an honor accorded to Bilal Hussein by the CPJ.

Mr. Mwenda's courage is typical of CPJ award winners. Others being honored this year include photographer Bilal Hussein of the Associated Press, whom the U.S. military imprisoned in Iraq for two years without charges; Danish Karokhel and Farida Nekzad, who run a news agency in Afghanistan, one of the world's most dangerous places for reporters, and especially for female reporters such as Ms. Nekzad; Beatrice Mtetwa, a lawyer who has defended journalists against the vicious persecution of President Robert Mugabe in Zimbabwe; and Cuban journalist Héctor Maseda Gutiérrez.

(emphasis mine)
No mention about the killings on Haifa Street. No mention of the staged shots.

Is there a Committee to Protect Election Workers? The CPJ, by honoring Hussein is effectively acting as the Committee to Protect Terrorists.

American troops in Afghanistan through the eyes of a French OMLT infantryman

"But we live with them and got to know them, and we henceforth know that we have the honor to live with one of the most renowned units of the US Army...

Heavily built, fed at the earliest age with Gatorade, proteins and creatine - they are all heads and shoulders taller than us and their muscles remind us of Rambo. Our frames are amusingly skinny to them - we are wimps, even the strongest of us - and because of that they often mistake us for Afghans...

Honor, motherland - everything here reminds of that : the American flag floating in the wind above the outpost, just like the one on the post parcels. Even if recruits often originate from the hearth of American cities and gang territory, no one here has any goal other than to hold high and proud the star spangled banner...

And they are impressive warriors ! We have not come across bad ones, as strange at it may seem to you when you know how critical French people can be. ...the long hours of watch at the outpost never seem to annoy them in the slightest. On the one square meter wooden tower above the perimeter wall they stand the five consecutive hours in full battle rattle and night vision goggles on top, their sight unmoving in the directions of likely danger. No distractions, no pauses, they are like statues nights and days.

And combat ? If you have seen Rambo you have seen it all - always coming to the rescue when one of our teams gets in trouble, and always in the shortest delay. That is one of their tricks : they switch from T-shirt and sandals to combat ready in three minutes. Arriving in contact with the enemy, the way they fight is simple and disconcerting : they just charge ! They disembark and assault in stride, they bomb first and ask questions later - which cuts any pussyfooting short.

Never mind what the idiotic chattering classes of Europe say about America, the French soldiers who serve along side them have a far better opinion.

Suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress; but then I repeat myself. - Mark Twain

Afghanistan was not invaded

Idiot moonbat "professor" gets bitch slapped by the facts in a succinct letter-to-the-editor. Cut this one out and carry it with you for moonbat intervention. Use as necessary.

Dear Editor - Michael Keefer's letter to the editor ("We mustn't participate in 'criminal follies'," Nov. 19) says "the American invasion of Afghanistan was a direct violation of international law; the ensuing occupation is likewise illegal."

Keefer is, despite being a university professor, singularly ill-informed.

There was no "invasion" of Afghanistan.

Before the fall of Kabul to the insurgent Afghan Northern Alliance in November 2001, and the consequent collapse of the Taliban regime, there were no foreign regular combat formations in Afghanistan. The Northern Alliance did receive air support and assistance from special forces (both U.S. and British); that however is not an invasion.

Substantial foreign ground combat forces -- including Canadian -- only entered the country after the Taliban had been deposed by indigenous Afghan forces.

now here is some really silly shite!
idiotic Al gore link of the week

new study suggests the Mayan civilization might have collapsed due to environmental disasters:
"'These models suggest that as ecosystems were destroyed by mismanagement or were transformed by global climatic shifts, the depletion of agricultural and wild foods eventually contributed to the failure of the Maya sociopolitical system,' writes environmental archaeologist Kitty Emery of the Florida Museum of Natural History in the current Human Ecology journal."

Un-freaking real!
and to think this guy was a few stolen votes from being the leader of the free world...
Wow!

Yea, I guess all that tourism and the spring breaks by the Spanish had nothing to do with it.

I don't share your disagreement with that French solder's point of view. He wrote about US troops who come from all over, even from "gang territories". Well, they do. Recruits come from farms cities & suburbs, but they all share a deep patriotism. That's what the writer was saying. He admired that.

As for the "bomb first... no pussyfooting" comment, I think he was envious of that, given the ROE his gov't puts on his comrades.

It rarely happens that a Secretary of State is fired. If Hilary takes the job it's hers to keep. Frankly, it would be an improvement over the current one.

I would rather have her as Sec State than Supreme Court Justice.

Then again, she's in her 60's and Obama could very well put in someone in their 40's. That would be a long painful tenure.

Sure. I've got no problem at all questioning the validity of the story itself. We do that here all the time. Keeps us honest! But that can certainly be accomplished without adding "This person doesn't post much, therefore (s)he's full of it." It's a trend I'm noticing more here (although admittedly still not a whole lot). CHANGE...it just keeps a comin'...

"Obama’s transition team is asking potential appointees detailed questions about gun ownership, and firearms advocates aren’t happy about it.

The National Rifle Association has denounced the move, which has already led one Republican senator to consider legislation aimed at ensuring a president can’t use an applicant’s gun ownership status to deny employment.

It’s just one question on a lengthy personnel form — No. 59 on a 63-question list — but the furor over the query is a vivid reminder of the intensity of support for Second Amendment rights and signals the scrutiny Obama is likely to receive from the ever-vigilant gun lobby.

Obama’s transition team declined to go into detail on why they included the question, suggesting only that it was done to ensure potential appointees were in line with gun laws.

“The intent of the gun question is to determine legal permitting,” said one transition aide.

But even some Democrats and transition experts are baffled by the inclusion of the question.

Tucked in at the end of the questionnaire and listed under “Miscellaneous,” it reads: “Do you or any members of your immediate family own a gun? If so, provide complete ownership and registration information. Has the registration ever lapsed? Please also describe how and by whom it is used and whether it has been the cause of any personal injuries or property damage.”

Paul Light, professor of public service at New York University, said there was no such question for potential appointees when President George W. Bush took office in 2000.

“It kind of sticks out there like a sore thumb,” Light said.

He expressed uncertainty over why it was included but surmised it was out of an abundance of caution, a desire to avoid the spectacle of a Cabinet-level or other high-ranking appointee who is discovered to have an unregistered handgun at home.

“It’s the kind of thing that, if dug out, could be an embarrassment to the president-elect,” Light said."

And we know how much The One hates to be embarrassed...

re: #228 buzzsawmonkey

The Indus Valley civilization centered around the cities of Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro supposedly collapsed because they had deforested the area around the cities to make the bricks the cities were built with.

But since little is known about that culture--if I recall correctly, their language has not yet been deciphered--that remains somewhat speculative.

Then, of course, there is that city in the Empty Quarter of Arabia, the name of which escapes me now, that was considered legendary until its location was revealed through satellite photos. Legends said that it had been punished by Allah for its wickedness, Sodom and Gomorrah-style, by collapsing in upon itself. Well, it turned out that the city, considered a fable, not only existed but had in fact collapsed in upon itself; it had been built on some form of vault supports which had given way and the entire town crumbled.

Was that near the camel caravan trails that were found from space?

Reality is so much stranger than fiction, and all legends have a beginning somewhere.

Hi folks. Got a question for the Lizard Nation. I'm looking into how Iraq has improved since the Surge/Awakening. Anbody know any good sites/books/anything about:

*pre/post Surge Iraq violence statistics

*Who exactly came up with the Surge idea? Gen. Petraeus, some other officer, the Iraqis?

*Did the Iraqis come to us with the 'Awakening' concept, or did we go to them?

*any good sources on counter-insurgency warfare and how to fight it?

*any historical precedents for something like the Surge happening before?

*some good basic Biography type info on General Petraeus?

granted, this is a pretty big and diverse request, but any ideas and thoughts will be welcome. thanks

It's just like the "mystery" of the Anasazi. Where did they go? They just disappeared.

No they didn't. They moved out of their cliff dwellings due to social conditions and migrated in many directions and now a days we call them Navajo and Pueblo.

There are still Mayans in Central America.

What about a Jolly Rogering?

Adam ant/marco pirroni

In days of old, when ships were bold
Just like the men who sailed them
And if they showed us disrespect
Wed tie them up and flail them
Often men of low degree
And often men of steel
Whod make you walk the plank alone
Or haul you round the keel

Hoist the jolly roger!
Hoist the jolly roger!
Hoist the jolly roger!
Its your money that we want
And your money we shall have!

Of all the pirates on the seas
The worst of them was blackbeard
So damnable a fiend from hell
He was the one they most feared
Any man who sailed with him
Was taking quite a chance
Hed hang them from the gallows
Just to see if they could dance (ha! ha!)

Didn't the Iraq Study Group report of 2006 advise that victory in Iraq would not be possible until the so-called "Palestinian problem" was solved? And that to solve that problem Israel would have to be pushed to make peace with Syria, and that making peace with Syria meant giving the Golan Heights back to Assad and his goons?

It seems peace broke out in Iraq while the Palis were still looking for new and innovative ways to kill Jews and sabotage any hope for a state of their own.

Kind of ironic isn't it?

Remember this next time any idiot diplomat says such-and-such a problem can't be solved until we solve the "Palestinian problem".

Has anyone heard of so-called "neo-liberalism"?

I had a discussion with a friend taking political sciences. She just wrote a paper using "neo-liberal" approaches to solve some third world countries problems.

I asked her what "neo-liberalism" is, and she basically described what I understood to be traditional conservatism, and told her so, and she agreed with me.

Apparently, nobody talks about conservatism in her class. Or if they do, it is termed "neo-liberal" rather than "conservative".

I'm curious to both hear some opinions on this, as well as getting a good source or if someone can give me a quick primer on the differences between traditional liberal/traditional conservative/neocon/neolib/libertarianism, etc.

Thanks!

Black and White
(Under age 40? You won't understand.)
You could hardly see for all the snow, Spread the rabbit ears as far as they go.
Pull a chair up to the TV set,&nb sp;
'G ood Night, David. Good Night, Chet.'

My Mom used to cut chicken, chop eggs and spread mayo on the same cutting board with the same knife and no bleach, but we didn't seem to get food poisoning.

My Mom used to defrost hamburger on the counter AND I used to eat it raw sometimes, too. Our school sandwiches were wrapped in wax paper in a brown paper bag, not in ice-pack coolers, but I can't remember getting e-coli.

Almost all of us would have rather gone swimming in the lake instead of a pr istine p ool (talk about boring), no beach closures then.

The term cell phone would have conjured up a phone in a jail cell, and a pager was the school PA system.

We all took gym, not PE.. and risked permanent injury with a pair of high top Ked's (only worn in gym) instead of having cross-training athletic shoes with air cushion soles and built in light reflectors. I can't recall any injuries but they must have happened because they tell us how much safer we are now.

Flunking gym was not an option even for stupid kids! I guess PE must be much harder than gym.

Speaking of school, we all said prayers and sang the national anthem, and staying in detention after school caught all sorts of negative attention.

We must have had horribly damaged psyches. What an archaic health system we had then. Remember school nurses? Ours wore a hat and everything.

I though t that I was supposed to accomplish something before I was allowed to be proud of myself.

I just can't recall how bored we were without computers, Play Station, Nintendo, X-box or 270 digital TV cable stations.

Oh yeah .. and where was the Benadryl and sterilization kit when I got that bee sting? I could have been killed!

We played 'king of the hill' on piles of gravel left on vacant construction sites, and when we got hurt, Mom pulled out the 48-cent bottle of Mercurochrome (kids liked it better because it didn't sting like iodine did) and then we got our butt spanked.

Now it's a trip to the emergency room, followed by a 10-day dose of a $49 bottle of antibiotics, and then Mom calls the attorney to sue the contractor for leaving a horribly vicious pile of gravel where it was such a threat.

We didn't act up at the neighbor's house either because if we did, we got our butt spanked there and then we got our butt spanked again when we got home.

I recal l Donny Reynolds from next door coming over and doing his tricks on the front stoop, just before he fell off. Little did his Mom know that she could have owned our house. Instead, she picked him up and swatted him for being such a goof. It was a neighborhood run amuck.

To top it off, not a single person I knew had ever been told that they were from a dysfunctional family. How could we possibly have known that?

We needed to get into group therapy and anger management classes? We were obviously so duped by so many societal ills that we didn't even notice that the entire country wasn't taking Prozac! How did we ever survive?

LOVE TO ALL OF US WHO SHARED THIS ERA, AND TO ALL WHO DIDN'T; SORRY FOR WHAT YOU MISSED. I WOULDN'T TRADE IT FOR ANYTHING.

I'm hoping it's that good. arg

Who's Timothy Geithner and why did CBBHO choose him to be Sec. of the Treasury?

He's the president of the NY Fed. He's qualified from the perspective of having an awareness of how Treasury and Wall Street operate. It's a solid pick.

I think the European anti-US thing is mostly (but not entirely) a media & political elite thing. Just like in America!

Also, it depends in which country: Eastern Europeans are openly pro-American.

I was going to say that that made sense because the media is where I was getting my info. Yes the Eastern Europeans are really stepping up to support the US on the war on terror with there help in the coalition.

I think it depends on how he's used...looks like he is sharp, but not sure where his alliances lie, you know? Seems somewhat naive to me, but has quite a bit of financial focus. I am more concerned because he has not had the high-powered nuance experience that should be strong to go with the power of this position. I worry, a lot...

I do lurk, and I'm at work. Sorry I dropped off, but duty called.

I posted it is as a rant, not a fact, after a phone conversation with a person at the loan company. I have asked the person for written details and will provide it when I get it. So far, I can't find anything specific on the Fannie web site.

If it is true, it is not fair to smaller companies, and I intend to write my congressional representative.

Charles's move to allow rating comments spurred me to actually want to venture forth and post a bit more. Thanks for the encouragement. I have enjoyed this blog for years, and it is my main source for finding news. Thank you, Charles for all the improvements/features. This is truly one-of-a-kind, one-stop-shopping EXCELLENT blog.

Good post. I remember feeling the same way the first time I attended the mandatory meetings. Over the years I have become numb.

Where do I begin?

Well, first of all, I find it deeply offensive to my personal sense of honor and integrity to be punished or otherwise lectured on something I did not do. Period. And to be subjected to two hours of second-grade style, “who can tell me what Johnny did wrong by telling Sarah she has a hot body” lecturing infuriates me on many levels.

Time will tell. The position is very powerful and the person should be strong enough to stand their ground to do what is right against the pushing of the committee or others...hopefully he has what it takes, but he seems a lot like 0 in that he has not had a long trail of evidence and he seems loyal to democrats, but the jury is definitely going to be out for awhile on this one.

Good afternoon, from the East Coast.

/Warning: Rant

According to a Wells Fargo representative, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have, as of 2 weeks ago, made a deal that forces most rehabbers to work with construction crews from Home Depot and Lowe's. No private contractors, no local hardware stores allowed.

Correction: This is true for THAT ONE mortgage company. Not a Freddie/Fanny policy. I was told by the loan officer that since it was a company policy, it wouldn't be on the net. I apologize. That was not the way it was described. I guess she didn't want us looking at other companies.
