This may sound silly but when it comes to enemy POWs and stolen Hummers, has anyone considered putting tracking devices on them? Drug them, implant beneath the skin, you know, like the stuff I see them do on the National Geographic channel.

At least we know that Guantanamo Bay will remain open, then.

My first post here as well so, gonna keep it simple. Treat the prisoners EXACTLY the way the Geneva Convention (that the left keeps insisting we follow) states we should treat enemy combatants who are captured out of uniform while engaged in acts of war.
Someone more familiar with the specifics please feel free to correct me but I believe it runs something along the lines of summary execution for espionage?
Failing that, I second DesertSage's idea.

That would be interesting. The Constitution forbids the housing of soldiers in peace time unless prescribed by law, so I'd love to see how the left would handle housing terrorists. I bet we'd see a dramatic, overnight shift in how the left views these men if they had to house them and there's no way they'd pass a law that they would be the providers.

Seriously? Go ahead and hold trials. Ask prospective jurors if they've contemplated suicide recently. Accept only those who indicate they're determined to go through with it. That way, but only in that way, you can get a jury that isn't intimidated.
Next, you need an 80 year old judge who isn't senile but who has terminal cancer and wants to move things right along.
Where you find the prosecutor I don't know.
And give them a William Kunstler for defense counsel. If he wins the case, he's lived up to his highest ideals. If he loses, he earns the undying gratitude of al Qaeda for a good effort. And I have a bridge in Brooklyn I could sell ya for cheap.

"When our forces used to enter houses in the past, before this campaign, the women would hide the weapons in their underclothes, and then they were automatically off limits," says Khitam Farraj, a female police officer with a PhD in psychology. "Before, women were part of the security apparatus, but we didn't have the capability or the training we needed, and we weren't well organized."
But now women are taking a leading role in many security operations in the West Bank. When police enter a house, the female officers immediately take the women aside, usually to a separate room, and search them in a respectful way, while the men go to work on the men.

People say, “You need these cocktail dresses for all the receptions” — except I don’t go, because we have no idea if we are going to be in session. But my husband has encouraged me to, shall we say, keep up with fashion.HB: We hear he shops for you.

re: #44 Sharmuta
That would be interesting. The Constitution forbids the housing of soldiers in peace time unless prescribed by law, so I'd love to see how the left would handle housing terrorists. I bet we'd see a dramatic, overnight shift in how the left views these men if they had to house them and there's no way they'd pass a law that they would be the providers.
Sharm, we have garden-variety homeless people (some just down on their luck, but most with alcohol, drug, and/or psychological problems) in tent cities here in the Seattle area, and I can tell you the Democrats who hoist them on the rest of us don't want them anywhere near their houses/kids. I think they should camp on the lawn of the King County Executive, Ron Sims, but I'm sure he'd never go for it.
I honestly wish there were some way to make these people feel the impact of their decisions. Terrorists on the White House lawn for closing Gitmo would be an excellent start.

Good evening, Lizards.
One thing I expected to happen that never did was various terrorist groups grabbing hostages and demanding the release of one or more Gits. As to why it didn't, my guesses are;
1. Airline hijacking is a thing of the past- if someone tries to commandeer an airliner today, the crew and passengers will kill them, accepting whatever casualties they take in the process as the price of doing business. The alternative, of course, being the possibility of another 9/11.
2. Taking U.S. military personnel hostage is a practical impossibility ( they are armed, and trained to fight) and counterproductive even if it could be done (it calls down the wrath of God on the hostage takers).
3. There is also the possibility that al-Qaeda, etc., simply don't give a rat's a$$ about their "brothers" in Club G, on the grounds that there are always more wannabee "martyrs" available at the neighborhood madrassa.
4. Or- they may simply have been waiting for a new Administration which they think they can intimidate into giving them all 250 or so for one or two hostages, the way Olmert's government in Israel did a couple of times.
If I'm correct on (4), it won't matter where we put them. As long as they're in our custody, and we have a President the jihadists think can be rolled (either because of his "philosophy", or just because they think he is a wimp they can bulldoze), the threat of hostage-taking is, once more, on the table.
The moral, of course, is- don't vote for a wimp or a starry-eyed pseudo-intellectual/borderline mystic for President. I'm sort of wondering if 52% of the electorate will be confronted, in no uncertain terms, with the magnitude of their error within the next six months.
/just a guess
cheers

I love how liberals cite the Geneva Convention like they have a clue.
The Geneva Convention says they can be executed for being foreign fighters hiding among the population and not having some kind of uniform that deliniates them from the general population. Local Afghanis would not be included under this I believe but many of those fighting with the Taliban are from other countries. The bottom line is, at least per this body of law, they have a right to be executed.
I say give em their full rights under the Geneva Convention. Read it below.
spies
Combatant who are captured while spying do not have the right to prisoner of war status unless they were wearing their military uniforms. (Protocol I, Art. 46)
Art. 46. Spies
1. Notwithstanding any other provision of the Conventions or of this Protocol, any member of the armed forces of a Party to the conflict who falls into the power of an adverse Party while engaging in espionage shall not have the right to the status of prisoner of war and may be treated as a spy.
2. A member of the armed forces of a Party to the conflict who, on behalf of that Party and in territory controlled by an adverse Party, gathers or attempts to gather information shall not be considered as engaging in espionage if, while so acting, he is in the uniform of his armed forces.
3. A member of the armed forces of a Party to the conflict who is a resident of territory occupied by an adverse Party and who, on behalf of the Party on which he depends, gathers or attempts to gather information of military value within that territory shall not be considered as engaging in espionage unless he does so through an act of false pretences or deliberately in a clandestine manner. Moreover, such a resident shall not lose his right to the status of prisoner of war and may not be treated as a spy unless he is captured while engaging in espionage.
4. A member of the armed forces of a Party to the conflict who is not a resident of territory occupied by an adverse Party and who has engaged in espionage in that territory shall not lose his right to the status of prisoner of war and may not be treated as a spy unless he is captured before he has rejoined the armed forces to which he belongs.
I take that as: coming to Afghanistan, hiding among the population and blowing thing us and trying to meld back into the population = you're engaged in clandestine acts of a military nature and you get to be made dead. Correct me if I'm wrong.

re: #229 eon
I'm cross-posting the following from my blog because I think it's relevant to the situation at hand regarding defeating terrorism and terrorist ideology:
T
he left side of the political spectrum possesses a perverse fascination with the Golden Rule taught to every American child sometime between the ages of five and seven. While it's a fine and dandy guideline for dealing with most inhabitants of Planet Earth, homicidal maniacs bent on the creation of a global caliphate don't tend apply this rule to their dealings with infidels. If you are one to believe that all it will take for terrorism empowered by the global jihad movement to halt entirely is just a few more concessions and more "cultural awareness", you are simply unaware of the realities of the aforementioned movement. The concept of jihad itself as described by the best and brightest of the movement (Sayyid Qtub) is perpetual war in the name of Allah. Qutb believed that it was the duty of every Muslim to work towards the creation of an Islamic state governed by the laws of God. Another prominent jihadi made the purpose of the British jihad abundantly clear: "...The only other ideological belief around now, not a religion, Islam is not a religion... Let's make it clear: it's a political, ideological belief." The belief held by many within this community, which sounds absolutely ridiculous and untenable through the ears of a Westerner, is that God-given laws are superior to man-made laws. Islam is a religion defined by absolute submission to Allah. The greatest travesty one can commit in such a system is self-determination, and the basis of democracy is self-determination. In the words of the head of MI5, Jonathan Evans, "the violence directed against us is the product of a much wider extremist ideology, whose basic tenets are inimical to the tolerance and liberty which forms the basis of our democracy." Combine what you have read above into one concise idea, and you have the global jihad. Adherents would like to see liberty and democracy, both products of self-determination, replaced by submission and fear.
This begs a further question. Why not just let the "isolated whackjobs" wreak havoc in a small part of the world? Clearly, their dissatisfaction with Western civilization and values is caused by the relentless imperialism of the American and European powers. The fact of the matter is that the "isolated whackjobs" wish to remain whackjobs, but they have no desire to remain isolated. In fact, the extremist ideology dictated by radical Islamist theologians such as Qutb demands a global jihad for creation of an Islamic state. Muslims who do not share such a desire are declared apostates and can be summarily executed. As has been stated in the previous paragraph, this Islamic state demands as a condition of its existence the absence of self-determination and liberty. No amount of concessions will make any difference until the final concession is made. That final concession is the abandonment of self-determination and liberty in exchange for the absolute submission to Allah demanded by Sharia law. Even the smallest strain of radical Islamist political theology is fundamentally opposed to future freedom.
Our next president MUST realize that terrorism is much more an ideological problem than it is a physical problem. You've got to splatter the suicide bomber but give the lollipop to the kid behind him. Radical Islam will be an extremely resilient opponent. Please don't attack me for being bigoted or whatever; I'm just trying to identify the source of the terrorism issue.

This is not a very popular opinion with my husband, but I really don't think BHO should send his kids to public school. They aren't typical kids with their father in the White House. They have to be in a place where their safety will be least compromised. They should be in a small, out of the way school that is easy to secure. I'm not saying the D.C. school system is any more or less worthy of them than any other kid, I'm just saying that BO has to be realistic about their safety in general. They aren't going to be able to do a lot of things and go a lot of places that normal kids can.

In 1980, Castro loaded up prisoners and thugs into throngs that made up the Mariel Boat lift and deposited them on the United States without any warning or way of telling the good guys from the bad.
Well, payback is a bitch. President Bush should order the Marines at Git mo to see that the remaining enemy combatants be released on Cuba's side of the fence with nothing to identify them individually.
My guess is that while the Castro brothers sort all this out, they will all end up in worse prisons that Git mo. Since about half of them would probably rather cut the throat of any Cuban than look at him or her, this will probably take some time.
Eventually, Raul will squeeze some propaganda points out of this...maybe give some of them to Hugo for a parade or something. But, they will NOT be released in the United States. That's what will happen if the new President "closes Git mo" and transfers them to US prisons. ACLU attorneys will demand info that would if disclosed put sources, methods, and operatives at risk. When they don't get it, the terrorists will get released.
Only President Bush can stop this from happening.

re: #270 ClosetConservative
Our next president MUST realize that terrorism is much more an ideological problem than it is a physical problem. You've got to splatter the suicide bomber but give the lollipop to the kid behind him. Radical Islam will be an extremely resilient opponent. Please don't attack me for being bigoted or whatever; I'm just trying to identify the source of the terrorism issue.
You have identified it quite accurately, I believe. Radical fundamentalist Islam is as dangerous to Muslims in general as it is to non-Muslims, precisely for the reasons you stated. This is why John Kerry's dreamy idea of "returning terrorism to its proper place as a law-enforcement problem" was, and is, utter nonsense.
Kerry (and, I suspect, The Exalted One) have a view of terrorism based in the 1970s, specifically in Europe and the United States, when the terrorists were for the most part disaffected college-age pseudo-intellectual leftists who, not getting what they wanted at the ballot box, switched from protesting in the streets to blowing things up. They were quickly neutralized because while the USSR might have sympathized with their views, there was no direct support because there was nothing for the Soviets to gain by doing so. Once they had been taken out of play, it was known that their primary support pipeline led right back to the MidEast, where groups like Fatah and Black September gave them arms and training on the principle of causing chaos in the West at little or no risk to themselves. The Provos and INLA in Northern Ireland got similar support for the same reason.
The jihadists, going by Qutb's theories even then, saw the Euro-communist/anarchist radicals not as allies, but simply as a useful diversion. And it worked- in fact, it worked so well that we fell into the "habit of thought" of thinking terrorists were nothing but criminals with better armament than the the norm, created tactical teams to deal with the problem, and went to sleep for a quarter-century, confident that we had the problem in hand.
9/11 shows how wrong we were. The Euro-Reds may have wanted to seize control of our society (never mind their actual chances of success, which were nil), but the jihadists seek its total destruction. And even that is, in their minds, only a "waypoint" on their course to their objective- that being total domination of the world. No, that is no more achievable by them than the more limited goals of the Euro-terror groupies were, but in each case the terrorists believed they could win, in spite of all logic and evidence to the contrary.
A major difference is that the jihadists often have at least tacit approval and support in the Muslim world, while the leftists in Europe never gained the support of many outside of their own limited pseudo-intellectual circles. Which is why your point about the child standing behind the jihadist is well taken. If we do not convince the majority of Muslims, especially the younger generation who are now the main source of jihadist recruits, that they will find no answers in The Struggle, then this will be a very long war, indeed.
And at some point, it will inevitably escalate to WMDs of some kind. That is as certain as the rising of the sun. At which point, we will be right back to Wretchard's (in)famous Three Conjectures.
With the jihadis, unlike other previous "types", the difference is best summed up by a couple of famous lines from the movie Goldfinger, delivered when Goldfinger has 007 strapped down under the laser;
Bond; Do you expect me to talk?
Goldfinger; No, Mr. Bond- I expect you to die.
The difference is significant. And one I am fairly certain our soon-to-be leaders do not understand.
cheers

re: #287 eon
You encapsulate the problem quite well, in my view. The United States and the rest of the world absolutely must realize that radical Islam is not a religious movement, but rather a political movement that pulls its inspiration from religion. I also concur that the Islamist political movement has had tacit approval from from the Islamic religious body. In my view, the biggest threat to the political movement is the religious body. We hash this out in the Lounge often, and the consensus that is often arrived at is that defeating the Islamist political movement can be done best by cultural project. Figuratively, I would like to see every radical mosque flanked by a Best Buy and a Burger King. Some might call that cultural imperialism, but the one truth that I hold to be self-evident in this situation is that our free-market capitalistic society with democratic values is a better Band-Aid to the human condition than Sharia law, and, in holding such a belief, I also hold it to be true that the majority (or at least a large plurality) of Muslims will choose the way of freedom and liberty rather than subjugation and submission because they, like everyone else, are reasonably intelligent.

Democrats in Congress, Supreme Court justices, and other high profile critics should be allowed to participate in the Adopt A Detainee Program where members choose to house, clothe, feed, provide health care and spiritual guidance to the poor, wretched denizens of Gitmo. High ranking members would get first crack at the high value detainees, ie, Blinky Pelosi and Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, Dingy Harry and Ramzi Binalshibh, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Walid Bin Attash, etc., and on down the food chain until all are taken care of. They could move in with the family, come back to the district, lick envelopes at the office, etc until they have regained their fragile health and self esteem when they would be repatriated back to their home countries where they could then be free to rejoin the Jihad.

Charles, as has been said this will become a horrible media and judicial mess if we try these bilge-rats in American courts. Send them back to their country of origin with lots of plastered to the merchandise proclaiming "toxic material", handle accordingly!
I agree. There is absolutely no reason not to send all these prisoners back to their county of origin--or shoot them, if one actually follows the Geneve Conventions. The Uighurs, who were supposed to be let go into American society, should be returned to their country of origin, China. Why not? It would be a good lesson to all who think that the Geneva Conventions means peace, love, rainbows, and unicorns.
Most people who want to protect inhabitants of Guantanamo have never actually bothered to study the tiniest bit of international law.
I was listening to some weepy interview on NPR yesterday about the poor Algerians picked up in Bosnia. My question was: why weren't they sent back to Algeria? If they were such nice people, they could buy another ticket for Bosnia. Why not? This question was never asked on weepy NPR. Boohoo.

Handle it the way the Geneva Convention says to handle it. Combatants who are bearing arms but not wearing uniforms are subject to summary execution. Maybe even use the methods Pershing used in the Philippines back around the turn of the last century. Creative and effective.

What if we treated these Gitmo detainees like some babies are treated during partial birth abortions? You know, the "scissors" procedure to the base of the skull and behind closed doors without any fanfare or television cameras...
Liberal judges granted women the "right" to kill their unwanted baby in their womb with Roe v. Wade. So why not push for a "Roe v. Wade" type of "rights" to Americans that would allow the elimination of unwanted terrorists in our society?
Oh wait, I just remembered, liberal judges want these terrorists to be released as free men into our society...they have "rights" you know... (unlike the millions of innocent babies that are denied life, who have no "rights", and some who are executed merely seconds from being able to take their first breath).

True many naive or idealistic eyes will be opened, but will this be enough, along with the 10-12 million registered Republicans who sat this one out or went third party, to offset Barry's legalization of 20 million illegals, importation of another 10 million, dem redistricting for upcoming census, assault on free airwaves?
