Soldier: Quite a sight, wasn’t it Sir?

Col. Edwards: A sight I’d rather not be seeing.

Soldier: Are you worried about them, Sir?

Col. Edwards: Well, they must have a reason for their visits.

Soldier: Visits? Well that would indicate visitors! Are big guns the usual way of welcoming visitors?

Col. Edwards: We haven’t always fired at them.

Soldier: Oh?

Col. Edwards: For a time we tried to contact them by radio, but no response. Then they attacked a town. A small town, I’ll admit. But nevertheless a town of people. People who died.

Soldier: I never heard about that, Sir.

Col. Edwards: Well, it was covered up by the higher echelon. Take any fire, any earthquake, any major disaster, then wonder. Flying saucers, Captain, are still a rumour. Officially.

Nah. The only one near me is across the street from the MOA, so quality control is a secondary consideration.

I sometimes like to seek out that mom 'n' pop place that makes the perfect pancake, but Perkins never fails.

That being said, IHOP was the site of my last opportunity to buy a couple soldiers breakfast, back in July. Folks, it only cost me a few bucks, and the appreciation was priceless. I encourage you to give it a try - even if it's a cup of coffee.

Tell the staff, "I would like to pay for that/those soldier's/soldiers' [fill in the blank]."

Just missed a soldier at Subway yesterday - five minutes. I was so disappointed.

Change.gov Misuses Domain Intended for Government Bodies Only for Partisan Political Purposes

Blaster writes:

So the change.gov website is hosted by bluestatedigital.

From their website:

"We Are Your Online Partner. We'll help you use the BSD Online Tools to rally support for your cause, build a constituency, raise money online, or get your candidate elected."

This is a .gov website.

The Obama pre-administration is using this site to gather information for donors. These are the same guys who would have turned off the credit card validation rules.

All a bunch of Howard Dean campaign alumni.

I asked Blaster if .gov can only be used by government entities, or if there are exceptions. He writes back:

GSA is the registrar for .gov - here is the elgibility criteria:

"To preserve the integrity of the .gov name space, .gov domains are limited to United States government organizations at the federal, Native Sovereign Nation, state, and local level, and U.S. territories."

So, if change.gov is an offical government organization, we the taxpayers are paying Blue State Digital (which is explicitly partisan, and designed to raise funds and run campaigns) to run this site for us - was it sole sourced or competitlvely bid? I want to know, they are my tax dollars.

Alternatively, the campaign is paying for the site (this seems more likely to me) and thus they are misusing the .gov domain (of course, someone in government approved this), and they are using BSD to collect info - look all around the site, there are lots of "signup" forms all around. Lots of places where they are collecting addresses and demographic info - because that is what BSD is for.

As Instapundit might say, They told me if George Bush were elected the government would be turned into an expressly partisan campaigning organization to promote one party rule, and they were right!

That happened to me at the airport in Houston a few weeks ago. A bunch of soldiers hanging out and I went up and told the bartender to give me their tab. He told me I was the 3rd person to come up and tell him that. I feel good about this country when I see that kinda thing.

Actually, my brother is a cop. When he hears that he asks "How big were those 2 beers?". He busted one guy who was driving down the road with a can of Budweiser on the roof of his car. When he pulled him over, there were 4 other cans in the 12 pack in addition to the one between his legs. Another guy tried to get out of it by saying he was celebrating his birthday. He wrote "Happy Birthday" on the citation.

Looks like more strange events coming out from Ted Stevens trial. Too bad he lost the election. He might just win the appeal.

From the Anchorage Daily News:

"A key prosecution witness in the trial of Sen. Ted Stevens has told the trial judge that some of his testimony wasn't true and that he suspects prosecutors left him in a room with evidence and grand jury transcripts so he could surreptitiously refresh his memory about 6-year-old events.

The witness is David Anderson, a nephew and once-trusted employee of former Veco chief executive Bill Allen, the government's star witness and a convicted briber. Anderson made his comments to U.S. District Court Judge Emmet Sullivan of Washington, D.C., in a letter dated Nov. 15 and made public Friday, the latest twist in a case with no shortage of unusual events."

Last summer I passed a cop on my way to work, roughly 6:45 am; gave him the up-nod on my way by. He nodded back.

About a mile down the road I realized that I just passed a cop at 10 mph over the speed limit. To this day I wonder if the cop, having given me the up-nod, was maybe just too embarrassed to then pull me over.

Yeah, well. Nobody believed the story, even though I didn't say a word about it. Word got around that I "made out" with... let's call her, "Olivia." In high school, every guy I knew worshiped her, including me - she was stunning. I just thought she needed an excuse to get away from the creepy, old musician. Next thing you know...

Pancakes!

Back in '04 and '05, I remember lizards recommending that if you need to mention that idiom, spell it differently, such is pron, or better yet, pr0n, just to keep the elicit hits to a minimum.

I'm sure as time has passed, that Charles has figured out a way to foil those search bots, but just the same, maybe lay off the pr0n references, huh?

Oh, no. The story I told originates back in the early 80s. I could have, and perhaps should have, told the story about John and I shooting the shit for quite a while about all sorts of things. I thought he was a genuinely wonderful guy.

Of course, the story of me waking up on the beach with the beautiful blond, who all my friends wanted to nail, sells papers, so I went with that one.

I wish him well. Didn't know you two were close to him. Please pardon the "creepy musician" reference. It was a color commentary that I felt helped tell the side of the girl.

re: #166 Killian Bundy

I've had such trouble with Amazon, lately. Orders getting screwed up; a contribution to Charles among them. This summer I had a horrible experience with a vendor who didn't refund my purchase. Plus the credit-card arrangement that was supposed to credit me $50 or so ended up costing me about $65 in fees. I wanted to give Charles a handsome, little bump earlier this year and ran into all kinds of trouble with it.

And the Paypal option is totally compromised for me, now, too.

I'm thinking of emailing a vintner in Cali to send a couple bucks to Charles for my mentions here. I tried that with a brewery in New Ulm and they turned their nose up at it.

Won't mention that beer again.

Hilarious email I received today

Happy Anniversary Australia,

Hello my loyal constituents,

Can I just say, thank you for celebrating with me the first anniversary of my Government.

And you know something? As I travel the world, I passionately believe you got it right when you voted for me, for an education revolution, for new directions, new leadership, fresh ideas, fresh thinking, and several of my other cliches.

What are some of my favourite achievements? The bottom line is this:

Hosting the 2020 Summit, starring Cate and 999 other "average" Australians – I found it so rewarding that I took decisive action and announced at least 168 more reviews, committees and inquiries.

On the question of taxpayer-funded travel, I'm lapping it up. In just 12 months I've spent the equivalent of almost two months overseas!

Fresh ideas like our unlimited bank guarantee, and telling those who consequently can't access their non-bank savings to "go to Centrelink".*

My challenge to you is this: visit my memorabilia website at [Link: www.RUDDSHOP.com...] (where the buck really does stop with me) and show your heart-felt appreciation for 12 long months of Labor.

Your Dear Leader,

Kevin

Patrick Roy- Even some people who don't follow the NHL could probably identify him as the Colorado goalie during their Stanley Cup runs in the late 90s, but not everyone seems to realize he started out with Montreal and was the netminder on the last Canadiens team to win the cup before a very acrimonious departure from Montreal a few years later.

G'day from Down Under to {everyone}

It's a cold Sunday evening here in Sydney, and Thredbo in the Snowy Mountains had 20cms of snow - In November!

Had a laugh about this article.....

Aussie blokes are Hollywood's new leading men

Turbulent times call for tough guys and Australian heroes are leading the charge in Hollywood, snapping up the parts requiring real men over their US counterparts.

With preview audiences clamouring to see Hugh Jackman playing the rugged Drover in Australia, Eric Bana, Russell Crowe, Sam Worthington, Anthony LaPaglia and the maddest and baddest of them all, Mel Gibson, are catching the attention of Hollywood executives all desperate to cast real Aussie blokes in their next big blockbuster

and

Their ascent comes at a time when Hollywood's once golden boys appear trapped in arrested development.

Crowe and co simply bring a commanding gravitas to their roles, says Variety's leading columnist Anne Thompson.

"America seems to have boy-men movie stars that don't have the danger and sheer masculinity that Australian tough guys have,'' she says.

"The hottest, most in-demand actors right now are Russell Crowe and Hugh Jackman. They have what everyone is chasing.''

Showbiz bible Variety acts like a cultural Geiger counter for public tastes and according to Thompson it has gone off the grid for Australian-bred actors

As I glance over to the couch where my Aussie male is reclining, I can guarantee it's not Hugh or Russell there, just Mr Bald with hands resting on his well padded belly :-)

Speaking of precious metals....wait....were we just speaking of precious metals?

Anywhoo- I spent the better part of a whole afternoon meandering the central district of an unnamed Mexican metropolitan area this past week. I was searching for the silver Libertad series bullion coins (Mexico's answer to the Krugerrand or Maple Leaf coin). Factoring in the sell price and exchange rate I gleaned from a few different bank websites, they figured to be a very good deal. One slight problem. None of the banks I went to said they had any Libertad coins available (although one bank had one of these Mexican state coins available, but at a significant markup). Initially, I thought it might've been a case of 'Lets not sell this gringo anything', but that didn't quite jibe, since one branch informed me they actually had gold available (don't have enough $$$ to be purchasing gold bullion up front).

But after reading this translated article from October a little later in the week, my fruitless search seemed to make a little more sense in that context. Seems the Mexican treasury is fearing a run on the Peso and limiting production of these coins, plus some banks are willing to buy back silver bullion at a much higher price.

My little brother sings - not as well as I do, he'd be the first to admit ;-) - but now that he's married-with-kids it's what he does to get out of the house (as opposed to bar hopping...like in the good ole days). He lives in Manhattan so there's a lot of opportunity. He takes lessons and sings at little recital-type concerts. Last year year he was here practicing for one of those concerts, asking me to critique his version of Oh, What a Beautiful Morning, and told me he was shooting for the "Hugh Jackman sound".

Well, good luck with that! :-)

But that's when I "discovered" Jackman.

When, in truth, the Earth's resources are limitless as far as we humans are concerned... WE determine what is a resource. We determine when and how we'll recycle, rebuild, re-invent...

We are limited ONLY by our beliefs, and some of us believe Earth has limited resources... when they're, in fact, virtually infinite.

290 wahabicorridor  Sun, Nov 23, 2008 3:50:13am

good morning everyone! ah, Christmas recipes. Here's one for the beloved fruitcake.

Christmas Whiskey Cake

1 cup butter

2 cups sugar

6 large eggs

2 teaspoons baking powder

3 cups flour, sifted

1/2 t. salt

1 cup bourbon

1 pound pecans, chopped

3 cups white raisins (or use candied fruit)

1 t. nutmeg

AND

~ a very large bottle of bourbon whiskey ~

First, sample the whiskey to check for quality.

Assemble all of the ingredients. Check the whiskey again.

To be sure it is of the highest quality, pour one level cup and drink.

Repeat this step.

Turn on the electric mixer and beat one cup of butter in a large

fluffy bowl. Add one teaspoon of sugar and cream until beat.

Make sure the whiskey is still okay... try another cup.

Turn off the mixer. Beat six leggs and add to the bowl,

then chunk in the cup of dried flut. Mix on the tuner.

Throw in two quarts of flour. Gradually pour in the cow.

Add 2 dried anything.

If the fried druit gets struck in the beaters, pry it loose with

a drewscriver. Sample the whiskey and check it again for tonsistency.

Next, sift two cups of salt. Or something. Who cares?

Check the whiskey again.

Now sift the nutmeg and strain your nuts. Add one table.

And the spoon. Of whiskee. Or something. Whatever you find left.

Grease the oven.

Turn the crake pan to 350 degrees. Don't forget to beat off the turner.

Pour the oven into the batter. Throw the bowl out the window.

Lick the batter off the floor.

Bake 300 minutes at 50 degrees.

Finish the blobble of whishy and flow to bed.

~

Huck pardons Kieth Richards.

For example, what was once seen by humans as a stinking, sticky black CRAP that had to be scraped off one's feet or boots... is now a 'resource' we call petroleum.

Not only do we use it to find more of it, we use it to find more ways of finding it, distributing it and using it more frugally... a given amount today (one gallon) can do X work today and 1.2X tomorrow...

Or sand... beautiful beach, eh? But WE humans turn sand into wafers for chips, and those chips we use to ponder ways of ever-more efficiently using the other resources we have and will soon have...

Unlimited... or "Resources only limited by OUR creativity", Killian

Nah, just evil in french. If I know my Make Belief's Fans, they were probably cheering on the Bruins.

/sad really, can't do it themselves.

I remember when the new Boston Garden was named the Fleet Center, only to have the title sponsor, Fleet Bank, taken over by Bank of America, who wasn't interested in retaining the naming rights. So the Garden was one of those rare arenas that actually had no corporate name/sponsor for awhile. Apparently they had some deal where you could name the Garden for a day in exchange for a sizeable donation to charity. Seemed like a good idea until some wag from New York ponied up the money so it could be called The Derek Jeter Center for a day.

So now it's simply the TD Banknorth Center, which seems nondescript at first. However, I'm not sure how many people realize that the 'TD' stands for 'Toronto-Dominion', and considering that the Celtics and Bruins regularly host home games against the Raptors or Maple Leafs, I can't help but think of it as a sort of subtle, backhanded 'Jeter Center' redux.

A short little rant afores I go.

Note in the above link that Richards was pardoned, and his rights restored, excepting the right to keep and bear arms.

That right is denied convicted felons.

Now having yourself a little bit of pot is a misdemeanor. If you also have a rolling paper in which to roll said pot, that paper is an insturment of crime. Having an insturment of crime is a felony.

So that rolling paper can lose you your 2nd amendment right.

You oughta look at what all is a felony in today's America.

There's plenty of convicted felons wandering around stripped of their 2nd amendment rights for nonviolent offences. Like nonpayment of child support (not to be construed as support for those who don't pay child support).

I'm just saying, is all.

I wonder what will happen to The Source (formerly Radio Shack up here.)

At least here, Radio Shack has practically turned into a cell phone store, with some electronics parts, cables, and adapters in the back. They're doing all right, I'd think, since they're generally located in smaller shopping centers where their overhead costs are lower, and the margins on most of their little gizmos are enormous (e.g. $4.50 for an adapter that they get manufactured in China for probably $0.05).

But if you find you really need a 2 to 1 RCA phono jack F/F adapter, or a 25' HDMI cable all the sudden, without waiting on shipping, it's nice that you can get one, even at convenience store prices.

The one that I really miss is CompUSA.

I don't know exactly what killed them, except that they seemed to want to become "more than just a computer store," and were always rearranging their floor layout to where it was hard to find things.

Probably they lost to the Internet (Systemax, parent company of Tigerdirect.com bought them out), and the fact that unsold merchandise in the computer business rapidly depreciates.

True enough, but think about the size difference between Windows 3.1 and windows Vista. Windows 3.1 was what 5 M/B and Vista is what 2G/b? I have a version of Linux (Fedora 4) that's 4G/B.... That doesn't include any supplementary applications. We use Soildworks at work and I have files that are 10 G/B.............

It went really well, thanks! Friday I had some unpleasantness with a parent who thought I was being too hard on his child and called me a "selfish, self-centered asshole," but I know I did nothing more that insist that the kid behave himself, so it's all good now.

I envy you that. I want to learn to laugh at those who insult me, but my feelings do get easily hurt by unjust attacks.

The dad didn't let the kid come to the performance last night (he was one the tech crew), but we coped easily without him. The saddest thing is that it's the kid who's going to suffer because his dad won't let him work with me again.

No, they are 3D renderings of complex carbon composite structures. But these are single files that are 10G/B and we have hundreds of files like this. Fortunately our server has something like 1000 Terabytes of drive space, yes it's a IBM blade server with a massive RAID array. My home computer cant even think of displaying most of these files, and it's a dual core AMD 2.4Ghz with 2G/b of Ram and 120 G/B of HDD. With the economy in the dumps, the Bid 3 auto makers close to bankruptcy in part due to outrageous union contracts, and layoffs happening every day around the country, what does the screen actors guild decide to do?

Screen Actors Guild to seek to authorize strike

TEL AVIV (MarketWatch) - The Screen Actors Guild, representing some 120,000 actors in movies, TV, the Internet, commercials, new media and more, said on Saturday that it would ask its members to authorize a strike after a federal mediator failed to bring the union and management to terms.
The guild said that it had been optimistic that a mediator's intervention would move the talks along but that after two days of mediated talks, management "continues to insist on terms we cannot responsibly accept on behalf of our members."
The statement said the 75-year-old guild hasn't set a timetable during which it would mail and members would return the strike-authorization ballots.
The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which represents more than 350 production companies and studios, said in a statement that "SAG is the only major Hollywood guild that has failed to negotiate a labor deal in 2008.
"Now, SAG is bizarrely asking its members to bail out the failed negotiating strategy with a strike vote -- at a time of historic economic crisis. The tone deafness of SAG is stunning."
Doug Allen, the guild's national executive director and chief negotiator, told The Wall Street Journal that the sticking point in the talks is management's desire to create productions for new media, like the Internet, with nonunion actors and without paying residuals. These are payments that actors receive each time one of their performances is rerun.

Please. Go on strike.

Periodically in my market commentaries I have referred to the "TED spread" and some folks have asked what that is.

The TED SPread simply is the interest rate difference (or "spread") between 3 month Treasuries (which are seen as essentially risk-free investments) and the 3 month LIBOR which is seen as reflecting the risk of lending to commercial banks. As the market gets more skittish and credit dries up, you see th TED Spread increasing. An elevated TED Spread is an indicator of anticipated defaults in the banking system.

Historically, the TED Spread in good times has been about 10 to 50 basis points. A year ago it jumped up to about 100 basis points. On October 10, 2008 it reached 465 basis points. Very clearly the credit markets had locked up and the bank system was on the verge of collapse.

While I understand that some folks disagree with the assessment that the banking system was on the verge of collapse, it just does not reflect reality.

On 11/21 the TED Spread closed at 215 basis points, still dangerously elevated but over 50% lower than the worst in October. I think that shows that the bail out of the banking system is working and the credit situation is easing. Not fast, but there is progress regardless.

You have to remember that the credit system started slowing to a halt a year ago. It is going to take some time to recover from this, even with The Messiah elected.

This will make your Sunday morning. From the Denver Post (paper of record for the socialist party)...

Giving up on the American dream- With its faltering economy, the U.S. is no longer the land of opportunity it once was for Mexican immigrants.

Seven years after an illegal crossing that led to abundant work cooking and cleaning, Lopez, his wife and their 6-year-old, Denver-born son plan to chase their dream of opening a tortilla factory in Mexico. They say their $1,000-a- week combined earnings here plummeted in recent months to around $300. They're moving from a $700-a-month rented house in Wheat Ridge to a cheaper two-room apartment until they head home to Veracruz next year, Lopez said.

Negative remarks and lower wages for Latino workers "hurt you," he said, citing social climate as a factor in his family's decision.
"Mexico's a better place to raise a child. . . . If we stay longer, we'll lose money, because there won't be enough work."

As Charles says... read it all.

re: #415 unclassifiable

I do not have any problem supporting banks but TARP was a mistake. Why not just fund the FDIC and expand it's powers a bit?

The ripple effects of these deals was immense.

For example, if AIG had folded, you would have had hundreds of billions if not trillions of dollars of public bond issues out there that would have been in default. School districts, counties, Library districts, municipalities all would have have large bond issues that they would have had to immediately pay off. They simply do not have that kind of ready cash, so they would have had to default and declare bankruptcy. You would have had local area governments all over the country going bankrupt.

It's a two prong situation at least. First, you had to keep the collapse from happening (which I think we did) . Second, you have to fix how the system operates to keep this from happening again.

For example, AIG is selling bond insurance very cheaply, and then only reserving 3 or 4 cents on the dollar of it's exposure and pocketing the rest as profit. They should have been reserving 30% to 50%. That has to change going forward.

So first you have to stop the bleeding, then you have to fix the cause.

We've recorded 2 CD's in our home and are working on a 3rd. I produced the first one all by myself. For the second we hired a pro and for about $3,000 he took our master cuts, remixed and cleaned up the sound, did all the cover and label art work and got 1,000 copies factory produced.

good morning, everyone, I see coffee has been poured!

Can blogging be lobbying?

the first couple of paragraphs:

Blogger beware? State regulators are wondering whether online political activism amounts to lobbying, which could force Web-based activists to file public reports detailing their finances.

In a collision of 21st century media and 1970s political reforms, the inquiry hints at a showdown over press freedoms for bloggers, whose self-published journals can shift between news reporting, opinion writing, political organizing and campaign fundraising.

Since then, Gun N' Roses has announced the album would be released on November 23rd. Back in the 70's in Dallas, I co-hosted a radio program, once a month on KRLD, the last Sat. night of every month, from midnight to 5:00am (yes, pre Coast to Coast, Art Bell, you own me some royalties). KRLD was a 50 thousand watt station, so we hit most of the west and southwest.

Let me tell you kiddies, they do exist. The nuts that is. I was an armchair UFOlogist, had over 1000 books on the subject, and no where, not anywhere, was any iron-clad scientific proof.

In that day, I preferred to use the term Unidentified Aerial Object, since there was object flitting around up there that we could not identify. But any proof that they were manned or controlled by aliens from another planet was totally lacking.

My two sense.

You ought to read the Victory in Iraq day thread from yesterday if you enjoy reading about honoring our troops.
And if a group named "Soldiers Angels" ever asks for a donation and you can afford to, giving to them seems like a really good bet. LGFer Logboy lost the use of one of his arms in Iraq and they provided him with much needed help, a laptop with voice recongition built in and still call from time to time to see how he (and his family) are doing!
And yes, I am VERY PROUD of my Dad and Grandfather's contributions as "Troops" - Dad (rip) lost his right eye flying a P-38 somewhere over Guadilcanal and my Granddad started his career riding (literally, on horseback!) with Gen Black Jack Pershing after Poncho Villa, fought in WWI (where he was subjected to a gas attack) WWII in the Pacific and commanded a military base in Japan during Korea. Regrettably he passed about 30 years ago.
But the line ends with me; no children I'm afraid.

Now, give me the grass roots answer to my question. They are giving all this money away, but, have they set up anything to make sure this will not happen this way again.

And why haven't they even set up the oversight committee to over sight the money they are giving away. It was mandated by law. How can they give money away and have no one keeping track of how the money is really being used.

Ok, make believe that I am economic theory challenged, because I am. Make believe I know enough on how to manage my money, not overload myself with abusive debt, because I do.

The federal program to insure? Same sub-prime dicks are now scamming that too?

If you want to see the epitome of irony you should read this. Employees of a labor union in the Houston area had to ORGANIZE themselves to be treated decently. That's right, these were paid employees of a Union and they had to unionize themselves to be treated right by their employer which was a labor union. Furthermore, the union/employer FOUGHT AGAINST their paid staff organizing and had to file a Labor Board complaint! When Employees of a Union Organize

That makes me feel all warm and tingly. SEIU is the union that I've had to deal with. after I was hired my employer went all union, when I started it was voluntary. I was exempt because I was already an employee. Then the jerk offs got un"fairshare" through. I researched what would work as a religious exemption and went with it and they granted it. Probably because they were spending a lot of time fighting with the non union people that didn't want to be forced to support them. I may have mentioned this before.....I HATE unions.

HUH! Don't know if this has been mentioned out here yet so:

Engineers sentenced to 1 year for espionage case

SAN JOSE, California - Two engineers from China were sentenced to a year in prison Friday for stealing computer chip designs from their Silicon Valley employers and trying to smuggle the secrets to their homeland to launch a government-backed startup there.

Fei Ye, a U.S. citizen, and Ming Zhong, a permanent resident of the U.S., had pleaded guilty in 2006, becoming the first people convicted of the most serious crime under the Economic Espionage Act of 1996. They were accused of trying to benefit China with their stolen chip designs, though prosecutors did not allege that the Chinese government knew of their illegal activities.

Ye and Zhong could have gotten 30 years, but prosecutors asked for less because the men cooperated with investigators. Both engineers apologized in court Friday.

Only a handful of cases have been filed under the Economic Espionage law, mostly because it's difficult to prove someone was trying to benefit a foreign nation, even if investigators suspect it. Prosecutors say the trail of evidence often goes cold because of a lack of cooperation by other countries in investigations.

The case against Ye and Zhong stretches back seven years, when they were arrested at the San Francisco airport trying to board a flight to China. Their luggage was allegedly stuffed with sensitive documents on chip designs stolen from four tech companies they had worked for.

Other papers seized from the men allegedly showed they were trying to solicit funding from Chinese government agencies to help get their startup going. Prosecutors say the documents showed that Ye and Zhong were promoting the startup as something that would elevate China's chip-making smarts and help China compete better against other countries in microelectronics.

And as I've said before, regardless of who the President is or from what party, his ability to affect the economy here is somewhat limited and I've always thought that Presidents get too much CREDIT when things are going well and too much CRITICISM when things aren't going well economically.

I don't know about that. both Bush presidents did a number on our freedoms. the first violated our rights in the name of fighting the war on drugs. you know the one where the govt can't seize your property without due process...well now they can. the second curtailed our freedome of speech by signing the mccain/feingold abomination. He even said he thought it was unconstitutional but would let the supreme court deal with it. He did take an oath to protect the constitution and he violated it instead.

Charles - any way to have a in-between ding down? One for stupid comments. I hesitate to ding anyone down unless it is over the line. Freedom of speech and all that.
If not I will just go back and ding this down.

Come on bbuddha - back at me.

No one lost their rights - they can't seize your assets without a warrant which must lay out sufficient facts for a judge to conclude that a) you May Very Well be involved in the Drug Trade b) that those assets were either used in the Drug Trade or c) were acquired with proceeds from the illegal drug trade (Yachts or high speed powerboats or houses or small planes mostly) or d) will become out of reach before they can nail your ass in court.

re: #535 JCM

In '94 Gingrich nationalized the congressional elections with the Contract with America. We need to do the same thing in '10 but the number one item would be no new legislation, number two roll back legislation and spending.

What I would like to see is 50 Contracts. Each state GOP should come up with a contract for their respective electorates that the state republicans can join and start taking back legislative bodies from coast to coast. This would increase the number of elected officials in the pool to groom for higher, national offices.

A new contract for America might be difficult as the republicans have made their word on spending worthless. A contract might help, but other than controlling spending, what else could they pledge?

I actually play some pretty acceptable drums. I have a drum set, pre-miked set up in the studio permanently. Generally I get some good drummers to come over and play them in exchange for me going over to their place and playing some tracks for them.

But, for synthesized tracks, I use a Korg whatever and lay down some "place holder" drum tracks that are later muted when the real drummer comes over. I never use a click anymore.

re: #623 rawmuse

I actually play some pretty acceptable drums. I have a drum set, pre-miked set up in the studio permanently. Generally I get some good drummers to come over and play them in exchange for me going over to their place and playing some tracks for them.

But, for synthesized tracks, I use a Korg whatever and lay down some "place holder" drum tracks that are later muted when the real drummer comes over. I never use a click anymore.

Sigh.... I dont have any of that fancy midi gear.... Cant afford it.... And my main computer is down, cant seem to find the enthusiasm to fix it.....

Good moring my friend - one correction - the IRS, after selling an asset and getting paid in full (which is usually DOUBLE the amount owed) MUST give the taxpayer any money left over - but they get to tax it again as income!

I'm somewhat looking forward to having a similar discussion at Thanksgiving with my in-laws. For years now, they've been consumed with anti-Bush hysteria. I can't wait to ask them how many times their Rights have been violated in the 8 years he's been in Office. Bush has done pretty much NOTHING that all the hysterics claimed he would do regarding everything from homosexuals and abortion to padding the wallets of his "cronies" in big oil. I can't wait to point out how imaginary all of their fears are/were.

Hush - be cool - wait a year. There is no Obama history yet.

Cheerleaders' parents sue in nude photos incident

Parents of two Bothell High School cheerleaders have sued the Northshore School District, alleging school officials erred when they suspended the girls from the team this year after nude photos of them circulated throughout the student body via text message.

Sounds good to me- when (or where?) do we start?

Good Morning, Sharmuta! May I recommend the GOP develop an interest in the education system?

Were I head of the Republican Party, that is what I would be doing now. Not being in any way a party functionary, I have no idea where to shove my one little oar, but I am open to suggestions.

Well I am sure you can guess where the democrat/socialists will suggest you shove it..... lol...lol...lol... :O

Now I'm just all bummed out. Called my favorite Great-Aunt to wish her a happy 13th return of her 71st birthday.

She was all depressed that her health was failing. Seems the doctor told her she was going to have to start taking medicine every day.

He's recommended that she start taking a baby aspirin daily.

One never knows, do one?

You really can't go wrong linking to a Bill Whittle essay!
And it's SO SPOT ON. And afaik, sexual harassment laws are the ONLY laws in our country where you are guilty until you can prove you're innocent!

Ever had a chat with the IRS?

Y'know buzz, lately I've come to think of LGF as Lizardia University...offering degree programs in anti-idiotarianism. I view most of you thick-skin lizards as my professors and nearly have my GED which is why I try to keep quiet in the college level classes except for the occasional intellectual spitball.

Your posts today remind why I value this Blog SOOOOO much. To you and the other Big Lizards *salute*

One of my favorite Proverbs is 27:17 (paraphrased-ish) As iron sharpens iron so one man (lizard) sharpens another

I am always sharper for being here!

re: #715 buzzsawmonkey

One baby aspirin? Considering that many people her age practically rattle like maraccas from the quantity of pills they have to take--most of them more invasive, and more expensive, than a baby aspirin, I'd say she's doing pretty well.

Hell, I rattle like a Chevette going down a gravel road, myself. And I'm 30 years younger than she.

But, as she pointed out, she's outlived all of her close family. All of her brothers and sisters gone. So it's not all been skittles and beer.

Time for Brett's Jets to see if the Titans really are going to be undefeated.

See y'all later.

re: #720 razorbacker
Won't really matter if the Titans go undefeated for the season - they'll just run into that CRUNCHING machine known as BIG BLUE or the World Champion New York Giants.
We LOVE playing undefeated teams in the Superbowl!

This guy (Newton) gets it. I saw the original post (Lan 9) as a great way to jump out and join the Space Cadets who HOPE Barack is the 'disclosure president' and see some GREAT thing in this
doriangrey has GOT to lighten up and not take things so seriously ...
As for hoosierhoops, if an anal probe might help you catch some satire, go get yourself one, from a Space Cadet or otherwise

... but I am open to suggestions.

I honestly believe that so long as the liberals are allowed to refuse liberty to our children, failing to teach them the purpose of responsibility and accountability, while attaching themselves like leeches to the umbilical cord of federal funding to the schools, then the future is bleak.

Our children in public schooling will never be able to tell if their rights as adults are being eroded because they have been so thoroughly indoctrinated by a system which denies them basic liberty. If the party has a future, it must focus more on the future members. And not in a counter-indoctrination way, but just by removing some of the parasites and returning to the true purpose of education.

/rant off

Or perhaps you should have lurked longer before posting and you know, learned some of the intricacies of posting here before posting something that might not have reflected well on you.

dorian -- if this (below) is "intricacies", I don't want to know about "lurking". Don't blame me for anything you might not get ... perhaps you need to go get a probe from hoosierhoops

(Oh please.... What the fuck is there to disclose? Fuck the conspiracy theories, if UFO's were real there would be indisputable evidence that no government or the MSM could possible cover up... Grow a fucking brain already and USE IT...........)
