Sunday Evening Open

I happened to catch a few bars of Mike Huckabee’s band playing “Twist and Shout” earlier on Fox News, and it robbed me of the will to live. But I took a bike ride, then a shower, and now I feel better. So here’s a Sunday night open thread on a slow news day, except for the financial foreboding and the whole “Return of the Clintons” thing.

I was in a cold-medication induced coma last night... and now I remember the "Fox" Huckabee "Twist and Shout" intruding into the feverish nightmare I was having.
It was a god-awful cover of T&S...

Yee-hawww!

My beloved Calgary Stampeders have beat the Montreal Alouettes for the Grey Cup. One of the most toughest, hard-fought games in the 96 years of CFL History and Montreal was a tough team to beat. 22-14.

My hat's off to Henry Burris, QB, for his extraordinary focus, punter DiAngelis and his magic tootsies and the offensive team for a job well done.

*applause*

G*d I love those guys.

Good evening.

Teh futures market is almost unmoved tonight, with the the DOW down 22 points, the S&P 500 up 1 point,a nd the NASDAQ down 1.5 points.

The Nikkei is up 207 points and the Hang Seng is down 419 points.

Also. it's starting to look a lot like Citigroup is going to get a gift from Santa.

Citigroup, Fed Said to Weigh Plan to Limit Losses

Nov. 23 (Bloomberg) -- Citigroup Inc. and U.S. regulators are in talks to limit the bank’s potential losses on more than $100 billion of toxic assets after the stock’s plunge last week sparked concerns about the company’s fate, four people familiar with the matter said.

The Federal Reserve and Treasury Department have been locked in discussions with Citigroup and other regulators throughout the weekend and a deal may be reached as soon as today, according to the people, who declined to be identified because the negotiations are confidential. The plan under consideration calls for the assets to remain at Citigroup, with the government agreeing to assume losses beyond a specified amount, two of the people said.

The holdings that may be guaranteed are a portion of the $400 billion pile of mortgages, bonds, auto loans and corporate loans that Chief Executive Officer Vikram Pandit pledged in May to shed within three years, the two people said. While the amount to be covered under the plan is under discussion, the talks are focused on about $100 billion to $200 billion of the assets, they said.

Don't believe this! Actually, once you set up an LGF account, you are required to spent at least six hours a day logged in, and you must post at least 20 comments per day. It's an enormous time commitment. A lot of people can't handle it. It has been known to ruin marriages and careers.

Blackeyed Pierce, I congratulate you on making the decision to terminate your account. Here's how you do it: First, submit a $200 donation to LGF, which will serve as your administrative fee. Then email Charles and ask him to terminate your account. Make sure you check back every hour or two, to see when you're no longer able to log in.

I saw that Twist and Shout bit, I was uncertain when he started introducing people from around the studio as members of the band. When they started playing I only could handle the first twist and shout stanza, the sound warble and camera shots added to the nausea and I had to leave, too (but this was last night and I shied away tonight for that very reason)

As for tonight, I thought watching the weird but true animal stories would be a better watch, but I was wrong there too - vapid, obvious, uneducational...

So, I come here and see we might have a gamey barbecue?

A Clintonian Mideast negotiator throws in the towel.

I've been a Palestinian firster for most of my professional life. I believe that the Palestinian issue is the core of the Arab-Israeli conflict, the key to regional peace, and the sine qua non for preserving Israel as a Jewish democratic state.

Surprisingly he doesn't blame Israel

The dysfunction and confusion in Palestine make a conflict-ending agreement almost impossible. The divisions between Hamas (itself divided) and Fatah (even more divided) are now geographic, political and hard to bridge. Until the Palestinian national movement finds a way to impose a monopoly over the forces of violence in Palestinian society, it cannot move to statehood.

Advice to Obama

I would, however, respectfully suggest to President-elect Barck Obama, in my capacity as an American who doesn't want to see America fail again, that he recognize there's no deal in this negotiation now.

[Link: www.jpost.com...]

Advice Obama will likely not take. Obama takes his advice from Israel haters who want Israel pressured.

WASHINGTON -- Many of the Republicans emerging as potential members of the Obama administration have professional and ideological ties to Brent Scowcroft, a former national-security adviser turned public critic of the Bush White House.

Speaking of Huckabee's band butchering "Twist and Shout"...This is funny-
Noise violatiors in Fort Lupton sentenced to listen to Barry Manilow

FORT LUPTON — Barry Manilow's "I Write the Songs" may begin with the line, "I've been alive forever,'" but for noise ordinance violators, listening to Manilow may feel like forever.

Fort Lupton Municipal Judge Paul Sacco says his novel punishment of forcing noise violators to listen to music they don't like for one hour has cut down on the number of repeat offenders in this northwestern Colorado prairie town.

About four times a year, those guilty of noise ordinance violations are required to sit in a room and listen to music from the likes of Manilow, Barney the Dinosaur, and The Platters' crooning "Only You"

"These people should have to listen to music they don't like," said Judge Paul Sacco for a segment about the program that aired Friday on Denver's KUSA-TV.

Sacco began the program years ago when he noticed that many of the repeat offenders simply showed up at his courtroom to pay their fine with cash.

"Most kids don't want to hear somebody like Glenn Close trying to sing opera," he said.

Video of a recent class showed teenagers with long faces shifting in their seats or looking up at the ceiling.

"You can't fall asleep," said teenager Rueben Fuentes right before letting out a bit of a sigh.

Members of a garage band were at the class after playing music late at night in their backyard.

"The cop station was two blocks away," said band member Robert Mort. "People who were at the party loved it. I'm not sure the cops did."

"Too much music, too loud, too late," added band member Harrison DeRuiter.

So what does Sacco think of Barry Manilow?

"I actually don't think Manilow's too bad," he said.

I wouldn't go that far. Close, but not that far.

It certainly has among the worst homeless problems in the nation. Maybe not the worst. And elsewhere in the world, certain cities (Calcutta, etc.) actually have a much worse problem.

The reason they're so aggressive here is that they have the support of a huge network of nonprofits who defend them from any prosecution, as well as having sympathizers in the city government. As a result, some of the bums feel (correctly) that they can act with impunity.

Charles, I'm glad to hear you are riding your bike ... sad that there are no more bike posts. You must have needed privacy.

It was a gorgeous day in Arizona; sunny and warm, but not hot. Just enough to redden my nose and cheeks.

They have a disorder. It would be really interesting to see a good psychologist study internet behaviors and write a book about it. Sorry you're having to deal with these sickos.

Maybe a few posts about this disturbing behavior on someone's blog, if one has the time. A psych blog could take it up as it would be a very interesting diagnosis of their behavior.

Not totally Huck's fault. Band played once as a lark. Audience (people are tin-eared, or feel they need to be complimentary) response was positive, and got a lot of support from "tv land". So they brought it back.

As much as I dislike Rather, it was an interesting interview regarding the Kennedy assassination though.

I'm not an Eagles fan and I've been fed up with his periodic press conference whinings at times but I felt bad for him. Reid had been defending him up the kazoo and then turned around and benched him. Apparently, Reid had one of the assistant coaches tell him-couldn't do it himself.

There's a BIG problem in Philly I fear,
I doubt I can stomach another Eagles game this year.

Winning or losing, no matter the score,
My favorite team's coach says THROW IT SOME MORE!

Andy oh Andy your incompetence is complete,
As you keep letting number 5 throw at his receiver's feet.

But through it all you insist everything is ok,
As your horrible team keeps ruining my day.

Watching Eagles football drives me insane,
How about another run up the middle for no gain?

In my opinion the fans have a right to boo,
Reid calls his plays as if he's ordering at a drive-thru.

But have faith because this team can't continue to suck,
Because before long Lurie will fire the fat fuck.

These LGF2 stalker types always remind me of an old Adam Sandler SNL skit, in which he played a lonely teenage boy who's obsessed with his ex-girlfriend who dumped him. He has his own cable TV talk show, and he uses it to do things like call his ex-girlfriend and hang up when she answers. Sometimes he has guests on the show, like maybe his ex-girlfriend's best friend, whom he asks if maybe someday she might take him back again.

I guess zombie's kind of like the ex-girlfriend's best friend, in this case.

We already knew this about elected officials, but here it is in black & white. Notice the economics score. It would be funny if they weren't spending your money and my money by the billions.

US officials flunk test of American history, economics, civics

Asked about the electoral college, 20 percent of elected officials incorrectly said it was established to "supervise the first televised presidential debates."

In fact, the system of choosing the US president via an indirect electoral college vote dates back some 220 years, to the US Constitution.

The question that received the fewest correct responses, just 16 percent, tested respondents' basic understanding of economic principles, asking why "free markets typically secure more economic prosperity than government's centralized planning?"

I'm not an Eagles fan and I've been fed up with his periodic press conference whinings at times but I felt bad for him. Reid had been defending him up the kazoo and then turned around and benched him. Apparently, Reid had one of the assistant coaches tell him-couldn't do it himself.

Because to think otherwise would require them to hold themselves accountable. Self-accountability and being a liberal don't mix.

This liberal "troofer" chick I dated (very briefly), as part of her argument that 9/11 was a dastardly Bush/Cheney plot, pointed out that only 4 fighter jets were assigned to protect the northeast quarter of the United States that day. Her head nearly exploded when I said it was her boy Billy Clinton who scaled back national air defense and was the one who allocated only 4 fighters per quarter of US airpace.

Heh - Yesterday I was treated to a movie and a meal by my sister and nieces. When we passed by a "MiniMart" type gas station, I told them the story about your mishap with the gas pump and how you got sprayed with gasoline, and about your ultimate actions in stripping down and driving off.

My nieces had a couple of questions for you:

1. Was your outfit totally ruined?
2. Why didn't you beat up the guy behind the counter?
3. Were there others who saw what you had to do?
4. Do you think that if you were in the South, you'd have been "taken care of" more than what you had to do yourself? Maybe a nice older gent would have offered his shirt to you, or would have tried to find more clothes for you?

Heh - they were incensed for you, that the idiot behind the counter wouldn't help you.

Decrease taxes and Increse Spending is a classic Keynesian stimulus response. George got savaged for that in '02-'03. Trouble was, he couldn't, or wouldn't, rein it in...

I know. My response is one more Adam Smith, let the hidden hand adjust the markets. Gov't is a poor predictor of where and how to inject monetary stimulus. By decreasing spending that eases the inflationary, interest and other pressures. But that's me, and I'm not an economist.

I was listing to Haydn piano sonatas from his 1770's period on original instruments. Sometimes he sounds like CPE Bach but then he comes out with a Hungarian or Croatian leaping, kicking dance movement and blows your mind. The stuff has a better beat than a lot of Romantic music and is kinetic enough for exercise use.

Seems that a year ago, some Boeing employees on the field decided to steal a life raft from one of the 747s. They were successful in getting it out of the plane and home. When they took it for a float on the River, they were quite surprised by a Coast Guard helicopter coming towards them

It turned out that the the chopper was homing in on the emergency locator that is activated when the raft is inflated. They are no longer employed there.

Islamic fighters vow to rescue hijacked Saudi tanker

Somali militants vowed to rescue a Saudi supertanker that was hijacked by pirates a week ago, according to residents of a town where the pirates are believed to be based.

Five armored vehicles loaded with al-Shabab fighters arrived in the central Somali coastal town of Harardhere this weekend, near where pirates are holding the massive oil tanker Sirius Star, said Ahmed Mohamed, a resident of the town.

The fighters told residents they would battle the pirates because the tanker, which is loaded with 2 million barrels of oil, is owned by a Muslim country and should not have been taken, Mohamed said.

The original study was done by doctors studying the genetic markers of a breathing disorder.

This could never be done in the US, although plenty of people try to separate the Scotch-Irish regions, etc. Still, it seems that any genetic distinctions would be diluted except in the uppermost and lowermost social classes where inbreeding is the norm, and in religious groups that marry within the faith such as Mormons and Orthodox Jews.

451 Dolphin  Sun, Nov 23, 2008 7:28:01pm

Since this is an open thread - I am posting a letter to the editor to the Houston Chronicle from yesterday..

“Good Night, America”

Walter Cronkite once said, “ We must give up some of our sovereignty to the United Nations” (speech to the World Federalist Association, Oct.19,1999) and “We may have to find some marvelous middle ground between capitalism and communism” (Los Angeles Times Magazine, Jan 21, 1996)

His view on the media is “I think news people should be liberal,” not that news people should report events accurately.

The news people of today want to be little “Cronks.” They do not want the fact to get tin the way of their liberalism. They constantly criticize American and the rarely say anything good about this nation. They are negative about the military, family values and twist the Judeo-Christian history of this great America.

In October 2008 one of the little “Cronks” moderated the debate between the presidential candidates. He said that he had received 6,000 questions from the Internet, yet he asked the same mundane questions and got the same canned answers.

Out of those 6,000 questions he must have had someone who wanted to know, if elected, who would you appoint to the Supreme Court? Do you support partial birth abortion? Do you support same-sex marriage? Do you support the Second Amendment as ruled on by the Supreme Court? What is your stand on immigration? These are extremely important questions to millions of Americans, but the mediator made sure they were no going to be asked.

Thanks, Mr. Cronkite. The rest of the world is turning from socialism to capitalism, but you and your little “Cronks” want America to turn to socialism. Good night, America.

Social conservatism is taking a beating lately. Not only did it lose in the recent elections, it is being blamed for the Republican losses.

We lost because of the economy. Had as many Republicans voted for McCain as voted for Bush we would have won despite most Americans voting their pocketbook. Had we abandoned the social conservetives McCains lose would have been far greater.

They're protecting their revenue stream. Islamist organizations ultimately derive a great of their revenues from oil production. They have do not want to see those supplies disrupted by pirates. Its not a good shake for them.

re: #239 Dasher

Article on the cause of the consumer melt down.

OIL PRICE, NOT SUPRIME LOANS, BROKE US CONSUMERS

History Network News: [Link: hnn.us...]

What jumped out were these two statements:

"Indeed, when Oil rich nations decided to squeeze the American consumer by not only raising oil prices but also by ending or lowering their investment in the American financial markets, they assumed that there were enough new consumers in Asia to replace the American ones. In other word, they assumed that the collapse of the US economy would not lead to the collapse of the global economy, most especially, the Asian one. They were wrong.
... So where are we now? OPEC got the American president it wanted but at an exorbitant price.

I'd heard one news commenter make a short reference to another version of the same idea.. but, there hasn't been much discussion from her viewpoint. Very interesting.

Change of topic?

I was reading this blog post on GNXP yesterday, and didn't quite understand it. It appears that national boundaries in Europe correspond to genetic differences, thus, one could say that nations are races, but races writ very small, as in insignificant. Is this right?

Any geneticists here?

[Link: www.gnxp.com...]

I'm not a geneticist but I do wear jeans, so I'll ask, what is that supposed to be a chart of?

People tend to speak French in France, too, does that call for an explanation? I expect if that chart shows anything at all, it shows less geographic mixing than one might guess, but that's anthropology or something, not genetics.

Mr Songbird and I thought so too. Hover's arguments are pretty reasonable. We looked into his background and found he is an engineer - not just a talking head.

The article makes perfect sense. I think a lot of liberals loathe religion and the "values" of religious people and that's why they hate conservatism. My father in law for example is a far left lib. He constantly criticizes religion and its values. He is a miserable human being. He blames everything bad that has happened in the entire frikin universe on religion so he can't look past it to see the true meaning of conservatism. Liberals who do not have such a disdain for religion and God can figure out that the religious right doesn't want to control everything, they just want the freedom to do what they want with their lives.

:-)

Hey Mandy - now that you're back...

Wait, somehow that didn't turn out right...

Friend of mine loves telling this story about his friend who can't tell a joke (may have told it here before)...

His friend hears this joke...

Guy goes to psychiatrist says, "Doc, I don't know what's going on. Sometimes I dream I'm a tepee and sometimes I dream I'm a wigwam.

Dr. says, "Sounds like you're just too tense (two tents)".

Guy tells the joke to his wife with this punchline...

"Dr. says, "Sounds like you're just a couple of tents."

Ooooh, forgot about flying on a French airliner! Between the perfume and the BHO...oops, BO, the smell was overpowering!

Ok, most Lizards know that I am the resident Francophile, and I will chime in on this.

I love France, the people and everything about the country, and I have no problems with any of the anti-Americanism that some people talk about.

And yes, I do notice a body oder, mainly in the summer, among the French people.

Now, I have not science on this, but, I've also noticed something else. They don't tend to sweat as much. I have been on the Metro, on an crowded non air conditioned carriage, and I am dripping away, yet there is little sweat to be seen on the native Parisians.

I wonder if there is a correlation between retaining sweat and excessive body odor.

I also know that they do not bathe as often as we do, mainly because they are charge a very high price for water services.

All these things combined would cause a bit of an oder problem. But just like a lot of things, the smell seems to disappear after a while, or you just stop noticing it.

It is a map of one or two particular traits relating to lung disease. Sorry.

I didn't see any explanation attached to the map, so I googled:

[Link: www.google.com...]

[Link: www.nytimes.com...]

I suppose the value here is in putting a quantitative measure on things, however tiny or vague the findings. I'm (obviously) very dubious about the strength and validity of such work, not that I doubt the underlying facts, so much as I fear the actual methodology won't nearlly support the claims. It's too easy to get this backwards: say, take the French average, color that yellow, and mark everything yellow if it's within sigma of that average. Do the same in Germany, using blue. IGNORE the fact that the French and German exemplars, are virtually indistinguishable. Voila, bad science, or at least, easy to misrepresent, science.

Well, as I said in an above post, they do not bathe as regularly as we do. The cost of water is very high, they tend to conserve resources in ways we don't and so a body oder in public is not considered offensive.

Sigh.

Certain banned LGFers are now dropping by my VI Day post at zomblog, continuing to act like obsessed stalkers, in addition to spinning the usual leftist stupidity.

I don't have time for this.

What makes a stalker? What mental dysfunction could cause someone to glom on to an idol in a grotesque love/hate parasitic relationship, like a noxious limpet? (I'm talking about their Charles-centric dementia; I'm only being harrassed because I'm serving as a stand-in, someone who still has mana from the great despised/worshipped leader.)

Very disturbing.

What makes a healthy brain work, setting priorities sensibly, and letting go when the time comes? It's insanely difficult to understand normal mental function. There are all those layers from synapses firing to edge perception to gestalt perception to wisdom.

We're all a little daft...else why would anyone ever put down a dollar on a lottery? Some people just go over the edge into a twilight of not-quite-certifiable mental illness. A few of them can be dangerous, but mostly they don't tip over into Charles Manson territory.

Well, as I said in an above post, they do not bathe as regularly as we do. The cost of water is very high, they tend to conserve resources in ways we don't and so a body oder in public is not considered offensive.

I only brought up the sweating (or lack of it) because it is something I have notice and I wondered if it contributes to the situation.

The odor probably has more to do with their diet than anything else. The sweating thing - don't know. Could be genetic.

Wrong? I was under the impression that the people who got banned and blocked were banned and blocked due to acting like spoiled brats and asshats on here. Basically, they were given drinks, snacks, and then proceeded to shit on the host's rug. Charles was more than patient with them, and Stinky even deleted some of their comment from time to time. After a while, it gets exhausting deleting their asinine comments, and they just need to be banned.

If that's wrong, then what's right? Letting the place turn into a sewer of hate like Daily Kos? Letting the inmates run the asylum as LGF2? Following the lead of the fascist-leaning Gates of Vienna? Or going off the edge of the Earth as has Gaghdad Bob? Please advise.

I want to agree, but. . .

I fear that there is no easy solution. If we bar foreigners from being shareholders, that would cause tremendous damage. Almost as much as Sharia banking.

The future sure ain’t what it used to be.

I don't want to ban investment by foreigners, just investment by hostile foreigners. Bin Talal's actions are a threat to our way of life. A non-violent threat to be sure (and thus necessitating a non-violent response), but a threat nonetheless. He he should be kept away from our economy as much as possible.

I watched Huckabee tonight. I know I am probably a lemming for admitting this but I like the guy. I know he served softballs to Dan Rather and I know that that is a sensitive topic (as it should be ) here. And yes, his band was woefully bad. I thought YES was bad! Aghhh this was much worse. But Huckabee treats people with dignity. Call me sentimental but I appreciate that.

As for the intra-squad debate tonight with Sharmuta, having watched the site for years, she has earned her stripes. I do not agree with some of her positions but she has earned her respect for being a sound debater. There are a couple of bloggers that are consistent in making rational arguments - she is one of them. If you are gonna take her on - you should have a cogent argument to make. The same is true for Charles, don't waste his time with capricious and arbitrary -comments. That said, I hope those that are in intellectually and honestly in disagreement do not shy - away else this will get boring quickly...

I suppose we could have fun with it and "Nationalize" his and every other Saudi's money and holding is the US, with an option to reinstate their assets if and when they were to reinstate our full ownership of Aramco. An amusing thought, not that it would ever happen, but amusing all the same.

Absolutely! That is why I still watch the nfl. I no longer watch basketball and never got into baseball. I love football. The Texans fans all laugh at my "hatred" of the Mannings, but the reality is, "you too, will learn to hate them!” – when you have to play them in the play offs. I am a NE fan and live in Texas. Did you see the punches thrown between NE and Miami today. Both were ejected? I loved it. Great football. Miami fell apart shortly there after.

And the Colts just won it by "my" kicker. It sucks. I hate the Mannings. - again, my apologies to Real!

I would agree with you. I was only stating fact, not whether they should change something in their culture.

Well, I'll tell you a story about when I took a team of Japanese kids to Europe for a Christian Youth Congress in Spain in July of 1992. We flew into De Galle airport and none of us spoke French, but as we got our luggage out, I went out to the taxi stand to try and get us some taxis to take us to our hotel.

None of them seemed to speak English, and I used my "je regret - je ne parle par francais" sentence, while looking down. One man came over to us and said in English "Where to do want to go?", and I gave him the address of our hotel, which was a very modest one. He looked over and saw all the Japanese kids, and quickly organized us into groups of 3, and we bundled everyone and their luggage into the taxis.

And we went flying across Paris. It was an exhilarating experience.

We arrived and checked in to our hotel. The next day we had several hours to kill before we had to be at the train station, so we went and checked out some tourist spots. The hotel folks could not have been more helpful to us, even though we didn't speak French.

We made our way to the Eiffle Tower and performed one of our songs (we were a performing arts groups) there at the base. We walked from there to the Champs Elysees, and ordered cokes at the McDonalds there.

We went to Notre Dam and lit candles and prayed for the orphans in Romania, who we were going to serve. Then it was time for lunch.

We went to an outside cafe - the manager was extremely polite (he even flirted with me!) to all of us, and we were served quickly and with a great deal of of fun from the waiter. Then we made our way to the train station to catch our train to Spain.

In all my time I was in France, I was treated with the utmost of respect and the kindest of intentions. No one (well, the desk girl at the hotel was a bit huffy) looked down upon us because we didn't speak French.

So my experience with France was pretty much positive. Well, except for the fact that we had to get out of the train at 4 am because there was a strike...

So my experience with France was pretty much positive. Well, except for the fact that we had to get out of the train at 4 am because there was a strike...

Wonderful story. My last trip there was Jan. 2007. I was still making a little good money then. I've been three 6 times in 8 years. But I don't see going back anytime soon. My employment situation has changed, making much less money now.

I think your reply was meant for Intrepid.

But anyway. You may have heard it but it is only true if an American goes over their and acts like a pushy asshole.

If you worked in the "big city" and you were running around trying to get to your job, how would you like it if some French person came up to you and asked you where something was, in French. And he gets put off because you don't understand him

Well, that's what a lot of Americans do when they travel to other countries. Instead of spending a little time trying to learn some of the language and customs, they barrel into a country expecting everyone to treat them like royalty.

Sorry, it don't work that way.

874 Steffan  Sun, Nov 23, 2008 8:47:16pm

If you haven't seen it, I found this on Strategypage:

In an unusual event in Afghan history, many Afghans want to work with the foreign soldiers, not kill and rob them. The ROE (Rules of Engagement) and reconstruction efforts have impressed Afghans. The former spares the lives of Afghan civilians, and the latter makes their lives better. Despite the Taliban skill at playing the media whenever an Afghan civilian is killed by foreign troops (usually while being used as a human shield by bandits or Taliban), most Afghans want peace and prosperity and to be left alone. While peace and prosperity are nice, they have been rare events in Afghan history. Being left alone is a more immediate survival skill. This is why, out in the hills, so many people appear to live in little fortresses, carry weapons, and be quick to use them against outsiders (anyone from outside the valley or tribe).

We appear to be doing something right.

While the drug gangs are doing well (it's a high profit business, so you can absorb a lot of setbacks), the Taliban are taking a beating. NATO and U.S. forces are getting better at finding Taliban gunmen, and leaders, and killing or capturing them. As usual, the foreign troops, with their helicopters and warm clothes, are operating in the Winter. This is the time when Afghans like to hunker down. Poverty, poor diet, lack of adequate clothing and little medical care makes being outside in the Winter a dangerous proposition. Even though the Taliban is trying to supply it fighters with some modern winter gear and antibiotics, most of these guys head for the hills reluctantly, ill equipped, and with much foreboding. Nothing glorious about dying, shivering, of pneumonia in a cave, while NATO troops search for you (and often find you, even in caves.) What the foreign troops are searching for in Winter are weapons and terrorism gear (bomb materials, commo gear and laptops). With so many cell phone equipped civilians ready to give you up, it's hard to find somewhere to hide out in the Winter. Most of the Taliban can just hide their gun and go home for the Winter. But your key people have to watch over things, and equipment. These are the Winter targets for NATO operations, and the pickings are richer in the cold weather.

So far this year, there have been 25 attacks on food relief convoys, resulting in nearly a million dollars worth of food being lost. The UN, which administers most of the aid, is not sure how many of the attacks are from bandits, or Taliban. Sometimes the same armed gangs are both. The Taliban are also active in preventing farmers from rebuilding irrigation systems and roads, believing this sort of thing will make the rural farmers more likely to support the government.

Somebody ought to tell the MSM about this -- it's just the sort of thing they should be interested in.

On second thought, naaah. They're too preoccupied with Madonna's divorce and Gov. Palin's wardrobe.

That is one of my pet peeves with law-enforcement. The "safety" road blocks that go up every Memorial day weekend, July 4th and Labor day. The locals use it as an excuse to up their revenue. Really sux mate! When I was a kid the only time you ever saw a roadblock was if they had escaped prisoners. Now its every weekend night and sometimes on the weekdays. Yep, and they really go after the kids! The first thing they want to do is search the car looking for drugs, and the kids are too timid to stand up for their legal rights. They even have consent forms for the kids to sign that gives up their right for unreasonable search and seizure! Arrr!

Yep, and the cops get their orders from the local pols interested in revenue enhancement. I go through a roadblock and five cars are pulled over with the drivers desperately searching for insurance papers and drivers licenses. What a cash-cow! What really burns me is up the damn seatbelt laws and how they came into play in Georgia. Our legislature produces a law that made seatbelts a secondary law, "you will never be pulled over for no seatbelt but if you are doing another violation then they can give you a ticket for no seatbelt" Two years later they made it a primary law and the first seatbelt roadblocks appeared. In two years it went from "we will never pull you over" to fracken' road blocks looking for no seatbelts!

I think your response was meant for me, and not for Walter. I'll answer your questions, though.

First, we made our travel arrangements so that we could fly into France because of the cost - it was much cheaper to fly into Charles DeThatGalle airport, stay overnight, and take a train down than it was to fly directly into Barcelona.

That's just the way it happened. Yes, we experienced a train strike in Southern France, but it also afforded us to have a very teachable moment with our kids. And they rose to the occasion.

And I'll tell you straight out - the French people I dealt with were never rude, never dismissive of us.

I'm sorry if that bursts your bubble of belief about french folks. But the ones I dealt with were very kind and very helpful.

Sent to me at by a good mate so I thought I would share it.

Two women were playing golf One teed off and watched in horror
as her ball headed directly toward a foursome of men playing the
next hole.
The ball hit one of the men.
He immediately clasped his hands together at his groin, fell to
the ground and proceeded to roll around in agony.
The woman rushed down to the man, and immediately began to
apologize. 'Please allow me to help. I'm a Physical Therapist and
I know I could relieve your pain if you'd allow me, she told him.
'Oh, no, I'll be all right. I'll be fine in a few minutes,' the
man replied. He was in obvious agony, lying in the fetal
position, still clasping his hands there at his groin.
At her persistence, however, he finally allowed her to help. She
gently took his hands away and laid them to the side, loosened
his pants and put her hands inside.
She administered tender and artful massage for several long
moments and asked, 'How does that feel'?
He replied: It feels great, but I think my thumb's still broken!
