I am George Bush & I haven't been paying attention:

PRESIDENT BUSH: I am pleased to welcome my friend, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, back to the Oval Office. And I thank you for bringing your wife to have dinner tonight with Laura and me. I'm looking forward to it.

We've been through a lot together during our time in office. We strongly believe that Israel will benefit by having a Palestinian state, a democracy on her border that works for peace. And, Prime Minister, that vision is alive because of you. And I thank you for your steadfast support for peace.

And it's not easy. It's not easy to try to change the paradigm, and I understand that. But one thing is for certain -- you've kept your word. And in international politics, that's important. And I want to thank you for the friendship, and thank you for your vision. And I just want you to know that I believe that vision is alive and needs to be worked on.

And again, I welcome you. Appreciate you coming.

PRIME MINISTER OLMERT: Thank you very much, Mr. President. I'm delighted to have this opportunity to express again the deep gratitude we all have to you, personally, as a human being, as a friend, as a courageous leader who has helped Israel so much over the period since you were President of the United States of America.

I will never forget that you have removed one of the most threatening strategic dangers from Israel on the east side, in Iraq. And this is a great achievement that makes life much better for many people in our part of the world, particularly for us and for our neighbors, as well.

You have set forth in motion the Annapolis process, which I was very proud to take part in.

PRESIDENT BUSH: Yes, sir.

PRIME MINISTER OLMERT: It continues with your guidance and support and inspiration. And this is very important, because as you say, a two-state solution is the only possible way to resolve the conflict in the Middle East.

So, Mr. President, on behalf of the people of Israel, I want to thank you. The importance of your leadership is greatly appreciated in our country. And I'm sure that when the history books will be written, the contributions that you made to the safety and security of many people will be greatly appreciated.

Personally, I want to thank you for your friendship on behalf of my wife, Aliza, and myself. And I'm so happy and proud that I had an opportunity to speak of it to you before you leave this great place and before I leave my office. And I'm sure that we will continue our friendship for many years to come.

Thank you very much.

THE PRESIDENT: Thank you, sir. Thank you.

Obama's AG: 'Enemy Combatants Not Entitled To Geneva Protections'

One of the things we clearly want to do with these prisoners is to have an ability to interrogate them and find out what their future plans might be, where other cells are located; under the Geneva Convention that you are really limited in the amount of information that you can elicit from people.

It seems to me that given the way in which they have conducted themselves, however, that they are not, in fact, people entitled to the protection of the Geneva Convention. They are not prisoners of war. If, for instance, Mohamed Atta had survived the attack on the World Trade Center, would we now be calling him a prisoner of war? I think not. Should Zacarias Moussaoui be called a prisoner of war? Again, I think not.

Howdy Lizards. Well, I guess it's time to sell off the 401K and take the $35.73 that's left and spend it. You know, help the economy. I'm thinkin' bumper stickers. I'll put 'em on the old car, just in case someone with low tolerance wants to key it. How about "Impeach Obama". or "Barry lied, infants died", or maybe "Hey, Joe Biden, the village called and they want their Idiot back". I'm sure y'all can come up with more. I've seen this crap from the other side for 8 years, so I figure at least now it's my turn. If it shows no class and just pisses them off, that's ok with me.

Congratulations to Henry Burris for a very tough job masterfully done, dissed and snubbed by the media and the elites for the duration of the CFL season, winning the MVP and it could not have been done without Sandro DeAngelis, who won the Top Canadian Award, and his Magic Punting Tootsies, kicking 5 for 5, splitting the uprights with his amazing focus and talent, winning the game, and monster thanks to the Stampeder defense team - you did good, boys!

My beloved Calgary Stampeders won the Championship Grey Cup game, beating their tough opponents, the Montreal Alouettes on their home turf with a hostile crowd of over 60,000 voiciferously drowning out the plays called. Okay, not all of the 60,000 were Montreal fans but what a game!

From, of all places, the UK Daily Mail:

The night we waved goodbye to America... our last best hope on Earth

Excerpt:

Suspicious of welfare addiction, feeble justice and high taxes, totally committed to preserving its own national sovereignty, unabashedly Christian in a world part secular and part Muslim, suspicious of the Great Global Warming panic, it was unique.

These strengths had been fading for some time, mainly due to poorly controlled mass immigration and to the march of political correctness. They had also been weakened by the failure of America’s conservative party – the Republicans – to fight on the cultural and moral fronts.

They preferred to posture on the world stage. Scared of confronting Left-wing teachers and sexual revolutionaries at home, they could order soldiers to be brave on their behalf in far-off deserts. And now the US, like Britain before it, has begun the long slow descent into the Third World. How sad. Where now is our last best hope on Earth?

Nah. Mashed sweet potatoes. Cube 'em, boil 'em, mash 'em, add butter brown sugar, a touch (just a touch) of nutmeg, and a half a cup of orange juice (to taste)....put in a casserole, smother 'em bastids with marshmallows, bake 'em at 350 degrees (that would be Fahrenheit) til the marshmallows brown pretty.

Eat them bastids up!

And in his comments section:

Boston's latest disgraced politician....

“Chuck Turner is not going to take this lying down,” he barked during a rowdy press conference on the steps of City Hall attended by dozens of sign-waving Turner supporters, who chanted “We Love Chuck” and “Chuck Stays.”

Turner called the media “criminals” for camping out at his Roxbury home and claimed that his reputation had been “ripped to shreds.”

He also explained to the assembled press why his pants were unzipped this morning as he walked out of his home, claiming he was so shaken by the pre-dawn TV news crew at his house that he forgot to zip up his fly.

Well, I'm glad you like him... you can keep him. You ain't winning it all until he's gone.

T.O. began the decline of the Eagles. Its continued since he left, but saying he was right is ridiculous. T.O. split the offense into two parts -- the T.O. faction, and the McNabb faction... a divide that hasn't healed to this day.

Reid and McNabb have continued the decline all on their own since then... Reid is almost as predictable as Herman Edwards, and Donovan just doesn't care anymore -- he's just sick of the boos and wants out.

They can still manufacture short-barrel shotguns for civillian purchase. Some of them even transfer on an AOW transfer, which is a $5 tax instead of a $200 tax. I've never seen one of the Saigas done up like this. It's almost like a custom built gun they've done so much modification to it.

Maybe we'll get lucky, and the Courts will toss the NFA in the next few years. It could happen. Heller left a lot of territory unanswered. If (if) the Court rules that the Second Amendment deserves strict scrutney, then nearly all Federal gun control laws are toast. Heller defined self-defense as a valid constitutional objection to gun control.

You'd have to go a far piece not to think that a short-barreled shotgun is a perfect weapon for self-defense. It'll be interesting to see what happens over the next few years. Obama may try to pass more restrictive gun control only to have the Supreme Court shoot him down.

That would be nice.

Cash to name babies for Mussolini

A far-right Italian party is offering 1,500 euros ($1,900) to parents who name their children after the fascist dictator Mussolini or his wife.

The small Movimento Sociale-Fiamma Tricolore (MS-FT) party denies its gesture is racist and says the names Benito and Rachele are merely "nice".

The party also wants parents to buy cribs, clothes and food with the money.

The cash incentive is available in five areas of southern Italy and is designed to help the region's low birth rate.

John Sayles is a great filmmaker--redder than the rose, but a great filmmaker. His "City of Hope" is fantastic.

And his short story "The Anarchists' Convention" is funny as hell. Jerry Stiller does a superb reading of it on one of the "Selected Shorts" collections.

In Lonestar, you can tell the moonbat undercurrent, but then, the conservative point of view is also told. And told well.

Sayles also did a movie about coal miners, also with Chris Cooper - can't for the life of me remember the name. Very well done.

Lonestar as Best Screenplay was up against Sling Blade for the Oscar, Sling Blade but I was rooting for Lonestar (even though I LOVE Sling Blade).

Investigations Launched Into Rangel's Latest Tax Questions

Inquiries are being made both internally and externally following yesterday's report of Charles Rangel's latest tax headache--this time surrounding questions of Rangel taking an "homestead" tax break on his D.C. home by claiming it was his primary residence--while primarily residing in Harlem at the time. The Post reports that watchdog group National Legal and Policy Center is filing a House Ethics Committee complaint against the congressman. And Rangel's own lawyer announced that his (in)famous accountant will review the situation, telling the Times, “The New York Post has raised a question about the tax treatment of a property the Rangels once owned. The property was sold more than eight years ago and we have asked Congressman Rangel’s accountant to retrieve the records about it.”

Vista does eat memory. I'd get as much RAM as possible on it. Fortunately RAM isn't very expensive any more. Most of the problems I've encountered on Vista aren't going to matter to you. It's a pain-in-the-ass OS for doing development on, mostly from security issues. Little stuff like you basically have to be logged in as Administrator in order to do any real work on the machine.

It kind of defeats the purpose of security if you have to be logged in as Admin to do anything.

No, thanks. Been using PC's for going on 14 years now and am waay too used to them to change; plus I've tried Mac's and since I only use puter for word processing, listening to music, e-mail and internet, most of Mac's artistic capabilities would be lost on me!

I use both PC and Mac--but I only use my MAC for school (I teach in college) and the internet. I have to continually help my students with Vista and all the problems with PCs. I'm used to them, but boy are they a pain in the lower posterior. I've used both kinds since 1988. I like not having a tower now...just this beautiful thin screen which is also the computer. Very elegant and even the keyboard is elegant. I have blu tooth...so my HP printer, mouse, keyboard have no wires. Ahhh. No wires--that's what I DON'T miss about my old Dell--in my little grandson's hands now--even the rat's nest of cords.

re: #322 Iron Fist

Vista does eat memory. I'd get as much RAM as possible on it. Fortunately RAM isn't very expensive any more. Most of the problems I've encountered on Vista aren't going to matter to you. It's a pain-in-the-ass OS for doing development on, mostly from security issues. Little stuff like you basically have to be logged in as Administrator in order to do any real work on the machine.

It kind of defeats the purpose of security if you have to be logged in as Admin to do anything.

But you have to be admin on any machine since 2000 to do anything..install or configure..
I think the main bitch with that was as a user you get too many nags and dialog boxes warning you of crap we don't care about ( or shouldn't have too)

'US warns Israel against large IDF ops'

The US has requested that Israel refrain from embarking on any large-scale operations during the last weeks of the George W. Bush administration, Time magazine reported Monday evening.

The magazine quotes an unnamed Israeli source at the Defense Ministry as saying, "We have been warned off."

IDF officials hinted in the past that a preemptive attack on Iran's nuclear installations might be timed to take place before the inauguration of US President-elect Barack Obama. Obama is slated to take office on January 20.

The call for restraint, according to Time, also included a request to avoid a large incursion into the Gaza Strip -

Haringey's child-care authorities, it emerged, had overruled police advice that Baby P be removed from home, instead sending the mother to parenting classes. One social worker on a home visit only a week before the child's death was fooled by the chocolate the mother had hurriedly smeared all over his wounds, to hide them during the visit.

Dear God. That goes way, way beyond mere incompetence, makes a foray into indifference and considers toeing it's way across the line into negligence.

re: #369 HoosierHoops

Yeah, you can change the nagging somewhat with a registry hack, but I don't remember it off the top of my head. Otherwise, it'll bitch at you for even opening an IDE like Visual Studio or Visual Basic. You can't compile, can't run. I only had Vista for about a week back earlier this year. We pulled it off and put me back on XP.

383 Fat Jolly Penguin  Mon, Nov 24, 2008 4:56:40pm

re: #289 realwest

I've had Vista for a year and a half now, and to be honest I had more problems with XP Media Center, using it about like you do. It looks like it takes about 1 GB of RAM to keep everything going, so I'd say get at least 2 GB, preferably more. As for hard drive space, the OS itself takes up about 15 GB -- you'll be more than fine with a 400 GB drive, but based on reading a bit farther down thread, you may not need one that big. I wouldn't go any smaller than 150 or 200 GB, though. As for video, you do not want an integrated graphics card if you want full functionality (personal experience); a top-of-the-line card sounds like more than you'll ever need, but a dedicated video card is your best bet. Hope that helps!

My best friend's daughter is getting married. His wife is an amazingly dramatic with a flair for the BIG! He is trying to find a way to do the wedding for under 10K.

I'll have a front seat for the whole thing. The other night, he floated the ten grand idea. She said, "Well, the photographer is only going to be 5,200.00."

This'll be swell.

Word of advice. . .do not tell them it is for a wedding and SAVE. Nightline did a story about this- they had 2 women go to the same shops, one for a party, one for a wedding. The cakes, flowers and tuxes were quoted with prices higher for the wedding , on the exact same day, the exact same items!

re: #392 AceR

Depends on what you want to spend. The best out there would be Glazers, but they are really pricey. Hydroshocks are also good. While I personally liked the ammo, I'd stay away from Black Talons. They don't make it anymore (IIRC, Winchester has nearly the exact same ammo only without the scary name), but it would be foolish to use them for home defense, anyway. A prosecutor would eat you up in front of a jury if you had to use it.

Of course, there's nothing wrong with 115gr. JHPs. They'll get the job done almost as well as any of the speciality ammo, and you will have less of a hassel if you have to use it.

I have never owned a 9mm, and only shot one a few times, but I liked it a lot.

I plan to practice a bit using the home protection ammo, just so that I won't be surprised by the kick, if I ever have to use it, but also want to use something with less of a kick for target shooting.

It is fine for target shooting, but it is cheaper to use full metal jacketed rounds. Considerably so if you buy in quantities. I do recommend that you buy a box of whatever you choose and make sure it runs through your gun well. It's not so much of an issue with a Glock, but some 1911s are really pickey when using hollowpoints.

I think the VDH column referenced above (the gay-ization of the American male) is stupid. We're a post-industrial society. Men are not becoming gay just because -- because they have white collar jobs -- they don't dress like lumberjacks and swear like construction workers. I'm a lawyer who can cook rack of lamb with cinnamon-rum marinade, clean, put the toilet seat down (why do I want to enter my bathroom and see the inside of a toilet?), do my own laundry, and look fucking great in a 19th century gentleman's outfit (complete with spiffy top hat). Hell, VDH would think Rhett Butler was gay because he was a self-sufficient gentleman who dressed quite well and had manners. Big thumbs down to this nonsense.

There is one glaring injustice that remains a stain upon the fabric of our country. United States Border Patrol agents Ramos and Compean have been more than sufficiently punished for the accusations of Johnny Sutton and the serial criminal illegal alien drug dealer.

I understand your outrage, but these guys lied through the teeth and attempted to cover up their actions. We has something even worse when a bunch of narcs raided a 92 year old grandmother house. I agree. And the police fuck these things up on a fairly regular basis. Oops, we got the wrong house ain't going to cut it when there's two or three people dead as a result. Frankly, I think it's time to re-visit the whole "war on drugs" issue. It's not like it has been wildly successful. Since they started it, the South American drug cartels have expanded their business to include heroin in addition to coke. And then, of course, there is the Afghan question.
