Terror Threat Against NY Train System

An alert has been put out for a possible terror plot targeting the Long Island Railroad.

Law enforcement officials tell ABCNews.com, the plot involved a “Madrid-like attack,” a reference to the synchronized bombing of the commuter rail system in Spain in March 2004 that killed 191 people. …

“There is nothing concrete to suggest this plot ever went beyond the aspirational or talking stage,” said a U.S. official familiar with the intelligence that led to the warning.

Law enforcement officials told ABCNews.com the information was based on an FBI source who has proved “reliable and knowledgeable in the past.” …

The FBI’s source reportedly told agents of an al Qaeda-connected group’s desire to place bombs or suicide bombers inside the first and last Long Island Rail Road commuter cars and detonate them as the train entered Pennsylvania Station in Manhattan, also used by the Washington-New York-Boston Amtrak system and the New York City subway.

Interesting that only now, after 7 years, are threats gaining in credibility.

Which is why Ben Hur never wears his IPod on the subway.

I want to hear the Allah hu-Akbar! so I can have a chance.

And I'm sure people think I'm an undercover cop on the subway, because I am ALWAYS suspiciously aware.

I've been trained to spot a terrorist trying not to look like a terrorist and I don't have confidence in the NYPD to spot a terrorist whose not in a kaffiya with a big sign.

But I'm not an idiot, I'm not taking the subway this weekend.

Wow. If pulled off, that would be truly horrible.

Every time I read something like this I thnk...

We have to be lucky all the time, they just have to lucky once.

Also, everytime they threaten, we have to respond or react and curtail our cherished freedoms and they win just a little bit. Thinking a double-tap to the head would work for any Al-Qeda found...

It will be interesting to see if the moonbats take these things seriously now. As many have said, their hatred of President Bush is stronger then their fear of Islmo-terrorism.

That's the irony. Michael Moore was right about one thing...that terrorists hitting big eastern urban areas are killing mostly Democrats (of course Moore said it in the context that he wished they would kill Republicans). So President Bush (and the VP, and the AG, etc)...has been saving the lives of a group of people (big city liberals) who have a hatred of him that is so intense, it's disturbing.

Police traced the suspect in a Monday burglary at a North Hero house because he abandoned his car at the scene while under fire from the homeowner, who said he could have killed the intruder but wanted only to force the man to surrender.

...Melanson came home -- he had been helping a friend dress a deer and was preparing to go out on his own hunt -- and noticed a strange car in his driveway at about 1:50 p.m. Monday. At first he thought the vehicle belonged to a town official such as a lister, but nobody was in sight. Melanson grew suspicious.

"I said, 'Nah, something's wrong,'" he recalled. "I parked right behind his bumper, so whoever it was couldn't leave without me knowing who it was."

Melanson kept a 9 mm handgun in his truck...

It's not all that different than prior threats. I'd be more concerned about the terrorists trying to go after Port Authority infrastructure. The jihadis have a hardon for Port Authority locations, including the WTC, PATH, Holland and Lincoln Tunnels, the GWB, and Newark, JFK, and LaGuardia airports.

At the same time, the Israeli military is reporting they are ready willing and able to take out the Iranian nuclear program and decapitate the regime leadership. This overture to diplomacy could be a way of shaking the solidarity of the Iranian regime. Some of them will be willing to tough it out while others are getting nervous and anxious that this might be their last chance to stay alive. Nobody in Iran doubts the Israelis can do it and nobody believes the bluffing from their generals that they can defeat the Zionists.

My guess is they are pressurizing the Iranian regime from all sides.

Dear Rick,

Iran has done the following:
spread out all the facilities
bury many of them underground
left unidentified others.

There is no certainty all the targets will be eliminated. Add to that shooting down a jet and capturing the pilot. Add to that Obama will not condone such action. The whole world is in trouble now, Israel is just a part of it.

Whoa, sorry, I turned into a democrat for a second there, I'm OK now.

Seriously, though, this is the kind of stuff that gets thwarted when you finance and empower your intelligence agencies, rather than hamstring and underfund them like the Clinton administration did in the years leading up to 9/11.

You don't have to hit all of the facilities to stop the program. It takes all the parts to in the chain to make the weapons. Hit the ones you know of & the ones you suspect. The bunker-busting munitions will take out any underground facilities they have. While you are at it, take out the regime leaders and the military headquarters. Iran will have 20 years to rebuild their destroyed economy and to think about the wisdom of their once vaunted nuclear program.

I'm reminded of the scene in Silence of the Lambs (the book more than the movie, in this case) when Starling realizes that Gumm is "Buffalo Bill", draws her weapon and orders him to show his hands, and he simply... turns around and walks out of the room. In the book, at least, it's mentioned that her training hadn't really prepared her for this; they had concentrated on suspects either complying, resisting, or running... but not just strolling out of the room.

Interesting that only now, after 7 years, are threats gaining in credibility.

I think this particular threat is a poor example of that, seeing as how this one never "went beyond the aspirational or talking stage".

I mean, seriously, the bar for aspiring to something big isn't very high. Gloria La Riva aspires to be president, for instance.

I'd like to thank the government for treating us like adults and letting us know.

I'm sure the Kos crowd will whine that it's a hoax, or at the least, a non-credible threat just to scare us. Others will complain that too many warnings make us jaded and less likely to react in a more credible threat. Still others would complain if they didn't let us know.

In the end, I DON'T want some committee sitting around weighing the pros and cons of letting the public know vis-a-vie our reactions. Just give us the info and let us decide. Trust us to be adults.

At some level I have to agree with you and perhaps Israel is reaching out to more "moderate" elements now that they realize that they won't have an ally in the WH. There's no question in my mind that if the Iranians gain nuclear capability they won't hesitate to use it. While M.A.D. worked wih the Soviets, the Iranians who are truly mad wouldn't blink at the notion of sacrificing their own to kill millions of Joos.

Dear Rick,

Iran has done the following:
spread out all the facilities
bury many of them underground
left unidentified others.

There is no certainty all the targets will be eliminated. Add to that shooting down a jet and capturing the pilot. Add to that Obama will not condone such action. The whole world is in trouble now, Israel is just a part of it.

an al Qaeda-connected group’s desire to place bombs or suicide bombers inside the first and last Long Island Rail Road commuter cars and detonate them as the train entered Pennsylvania Station in Manhattan, also used by the Washington-New York-Boston Amtrak system and the New York City subway.

Sheesh, so NJ Transit is chopped livah?!

(I only bring up NJ Transit because a couple months ago, I had occasion to spend the night "camping out" in Penn Station -- plans to stay overnight at a friend's house had fallen through when that friend had to fly to Texas at the last minute for a family emergency, and I didn't have money for a hotel. I ended up hanging out in the NJ Transit area for most of the night, as it's the only part of Penn Station with publicly-accessible wall outlets where I could plug in my laptop. In fact, it's awash with electric outlets, like every 15 feet or so! The NJ Transit section is also the most attractive area of Penn Station; obviously the state of New Jersey must've done a very extensive renovation within the past five or ten years.)

In short, lizards, if you're ever forced to do the hobo thing in NYC, "make tracks" [hyuck-hyuck!] for Penn Station and follow the NJ Transit signs!

You worry that if you lose the fight if he will take the gun and kill you. That's why we have clubs and peper spray and (now) tazers.

At least four simultaneous attacks in Mumbai, 2 dead, 10+ wounded. Bombs and gunfights reported:

Armed with AK-47 rifles and grenades, a couple of terrorists entered the passenger hall of crowded Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminal (CST) railway station and opened fire and threw a grenade killing two to three persons, Mumbai General Railway Police Commissioner A K Sharma said. He did not give details.

He, however, said 10 persons, including a policeman, were injured in the CST incident.

Eyewitnesses said some people suspected to be terrorists entered the CST building from outside the reservation counter and opened fire indiscriminately.

Two explosions also went off outside CST and eyewitnesses reported they heard gunshots outside the railway station building.

Firing was reported at Colaba, Nariman Point and near Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminal, formerly Victoria Terminus, and it was still continuing.

This one sounds to me like a disruption operation. If you can get people to not take the trains just by talking about hitting them, you've disrupted traffic, and you don't even have to wear the whammo vest and go whammo.

As to Buffalo Bill and posts 104, 94, and 80, my theory is civilians shouldn't pull a gun except for the purpose of shooting. If you're not going to shoot, don't draw. If you have to draw because you have to shoot, shoot.

Understand ahead of time that when it comes right down to it, you can't make somebody do what you say because you have a gun on them. If you're a good shot, you can make them die. Be clear on whether that's what it has to be, and whether you would be in the right if you did kill, before you draw.

I know what it is its all the Transportation workers pissed off at the fiasco the TWIC-card has become, especially us Merchant Mariners who already have background checks before applying for our Z-Card (Merchant Mariner's Document) from the Coast Guard, let alone the Civilian Mariners who work for the Department of Defense (I already have a DoD Common Access Card).

We do use hotel bathrooms on trips. The bathroom at McDonalds usually isn't much better than the one at the gas station, but at the Courtyard next door, the lobby bathroom is almost never used (everyone has their own in their room) and the place employs 50 full time maids. It is C.L.E.A.N.

I find the fancier the hotel, the easier it is to score a bathroom break. (Plus the bathrooms are nicer.) Just walk into the lobby like you own the place, smile and say "hi" to any staff. If asked, you're looking for the gift shop, or the bar.

That's what made the Sopranos so good. He had all the regular wife and kids problems that every guy has. It's also what I like about Big Love. Regular marital problems X 3 wives.

Exactly, Tony was a feared & respected mob kingpin. He was not a man to be trifled with in his "Business"
His personal life was a different story. he had all of the issues and concerns that a CPA or anybody esle would have.

I think this particular threat is a poor example of that, seeing as how this one never "went beyond the aspirational or talking stage".

I mean, seriously, the bar for aspiring to something big isn't very high. Gloria La Riva aspires to be president, for instance.

The simple fact that this is being reported at all makes this threat to be something a lot more credible than just some Jihadi musings. And the pooh-poohing by a single un-named government insider source just gilds the gold bar.

Yep. She's allergic to Flonase.

re: #211 bosforus

I heard a thought the other day that maybe some smart lizards can help me figure out. Maybe I'm just an idiot and the answer isn't too hard to deduce but...Why does it make sense to suppress the symptoms of an illness? If you have a fever, and the fever is the result of your body fighting an illness, why would you want to reduce that symptom? Simply for comfort's sake?

[And now for today's Medical Corner...]

It's often just for comfort's sake, and sometimes treating the symptoms of an infection makes it harder for your body to fight it. But sometimes the symptoms themselves cause additional problems.

For example, fever can cause dehydration by increasing your body's fluid losses, while simultaneously decreasing your appetite and making it less comfortable to keep yourself hydrated. A runny nose helps to flush viruses out of your nose and sinuses, but if you don't stay well hydrated, mucus can become stuck in your sinuses and get a bacterial superinfection. Diarrhea helps to get rid of stomach bugs that are making you sick, and taking pills to stop it can make you sick longer. However, excessive diarrhea can make you extremely dehydrated and cause more severe problems.

Yeah, it's kind of Ironic. Bush has protected us so well that people are able to convince themselves that the threat wasn't really ever there. While damning Bush, and, indeed, America for doing what is necessary for that defense to work.

You know that the tattered remnants of al Qaeda are counting the days until Barry O. takes office. Happy Days are here Again, Jihadi style.

It works out OK, because each person has, I think its 48 hours to play.

Since we use the dictionary and we can take our time to look over our next batch of letters before the next person plays, I actually find it a relaxing way to play, unlike when I play at home with hubby which is positively cut-throat!

Also, we're using the "super-scrabble" board, which is a bigger board, there are more letters and there are quad-point letter and quad-point word blocks, and up to six can play

If you're interested in a game in the future, e-mail me. I contact everyone before setting up a game so you won't be included in the next game unless you want.

re: #116 Throbert McGee

If you do that, make sure you have a ticket to somewhere on NJT. The police check for homeless quite often and will kick you out if you don't have a ticket - this is why the NJT waiting area stays nice compared to the LIRR section. By the way, Amtrak has a really nice private waiting area if you have Acela or first class (sleeping car - yes, welcome to 1950!) tickets.

If you ride NJT often you get to tell who is going where. The Northeast Corridor passengers look a lot different than the Jersey Coast Line ones and the Morris & Essex (Midtown Distress) and Montclair Line are also different. Quite a party!

UN agency approves Syria nuclear aid

The UN nuclear agency on Wednesday overrode US concerns and approved sensitive technical aid for Syria, despite allegations the country has a secret atomic program that could be used to make weapons.

In the end, Washington and its allies agreed to the deal, which provides IAEA expertise and equipment to help Syria build a power-producing reactor.

But they did so only after three days of deadlock at a closed meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency. The dispute pitted Western nations against backers of Syria, which included Iran, Russia and China.

Agreeing to approval appeared to have been a painful concession for the US, Canada, Australia, France and Britain - the nations that at the start of the meeting spearheaded the effort to deny Syria the aid.

Syria portrayed the decision as vindication. Approval by the 35-nation board of the International Atomic Energy Agency showed an "understanding of the position of Syria," Ibrahim Othman, head of Syria's nuclear agency, told The Associated Press.

An IAEA report last week said satellite imagery and other information suggested a site allegedly bombed last year by Israel was a nuclear reactor, adding that agency inspectors had found traces of processed uranium on location. The US said the target was a nearly completed reactor that would have produced plutonium, a possible fissile warhead component.

But Syria denies running a secret nuclear program. And on Wednesday, Othman dismissed Western assertions that a country being probed by the IAEA should not be privy to sensitive nuclear technological aid - and even denied his country was being probed.

"We are not under investigation," he said, calling the case against his country "accusations without any proof."

Reluctant Western acceptance of the aid project came only after a spirited endorsement by IAEA chief Mohamed ElBaradei earlier in the week that appeared strengthen pro-Syria sentiment.

The US and its allies could have forced a vote.

But the outcome would have been uncertain. And it would have further charged the tense atmosphere of a meeting that normally decides by consensus and without controversy on projects to IAEA members meant to help them master civilian nuclear projects.

Nations opposed instead settled for language allowing to express their concerns in the text approving the deal.

That text, made available to The Associated Press, noted that "a number of states expressed strong reservations" and committed the IAEA to "monitor the project closely ... and ensure that any equipment provided is used only for the purposes intended."

re: #345 bosforus

I thought that was good. You mean it can be too clear?

[Link: www.urinecolors.com...]

Typically, the healthier you are, the lighter your urine color. While you would think that clear urine would mean a well hydrated, healthy body, it may actually be a symptom of some other issues. The ideal healthy urine color is actually a straw yellow color. Clear urine that does not appear to have any color can mean that you are healthy and have a well-hydrated body, but it could also mean that you are over hydrated and risk water intoxication (water poisoning) or you may even have diabetes.

[Link: www.webmd.com...]

Too Much of a Good Thing

We know we need to drink fluids to maintain a healthy body, but is there such as a thing as too much?

There is a lot of information out there now about hyponatremia (low sodium levels), which is much rarer than dehydration problems, but it can still be a concern, says Kenney.

According to the ACSM web site, "While hyponatremia is a rare occurrence, it is a dangerous condition that may arise when athletes drink too much water, diluting the body's sodium levels. It is most often seen in prolonged endurance athletes, such as those participating in marathons and triathlons."

To strike a balance between too much and too little fluid intake, Kenney recommends weighing yourself before and after exercise, and drinking enough to replace the amount of weight you lose. If you're gaining weight, you know you're drinking too many fluids, and if you're losing weight, you know you need to drink more.

I guess the ideal urine color is a light yellow, and it DOES have to do with desalination.

You buy your ticket, and you get on, and that's it. Just like the subways and buses. And now that winter is here, heavy coats will not attract anyone's attention.

re: #432 debutaunt

After the past eight years of semantic violence from the office of President, should we be commenting AT ALL about the articulateness of ANY politician? McCain could hardly breathe without a TelePrompTer. Palin makes Bush look like an idiot, and she's not what anyone would confuse with being a smooth public speaker. Doesn't SHE even say "nu-q-lur" correctly?

Obama overspeaks. That's his problem.

WTF?

436 So?  Wed, Nov 26, 2008 4:20:02pm

Dear HomeLand Security et al,

Want to reduce the terrorist threat substantially across the Continental USA? Deport all Muslims currently under surveillance by the FBI, CIA & other national security groups. If you suspect them, deport them. Also should deny entry of any Muslims for the next 5 years from terrorist flagged countries, no need to name them, they are in your little black book. Especially Saudi Arabia. You will save billions of dollars which can then be directed towards solving the economic crisis. With 95% of the internal threat eliminated, you could focus your resources on the more serious threats that may occur.

Sincerely,
So?

Interesting that only now, after 7 years, are threats gaining in credibility.

Interesting that now, after 7 years, the people who supposedly will carry out these threats are still living in this country!

re: #51 Peacekeeper

one of the bullets went through a wall and traveled about 70 yards, until it struck his tractor and destroyed a tire

You know what a tractor tire costs these days?

Well, I think the tire can be salvaged. Demount it, plug the hole, and vulcanize a boot on the inner surface.

Tractors move very slowly, and the consequence of a tire failure is most likely going to be inconvenience, not sudden death, like it could be in an automobile if a mended tire blew at high speed on the freeway.

I've got a tire repair job to look forward to on my own little tractor; the rim of one the rear wheels has developed a pinhole leak from rust caused by the calcium chloride solution used inside the (tubeless) tire for weight. Probable solution: put a tube in it, unless the rim has rusted to the point of no return. No fun, either way.

You really can't have a bomb, until you test it. The reality is that these things are not easy to build, and seriously may not work the first time.

When Iran has it, they will test it.

And you can bet that Dinnerjacket and the mullahs will be in a bunker, a safe distance away to watch and celebrate. Can you say "target-rich environment?" This would be a perfect opportunity to take them out with a tactical nuke on a cruise missile, and then bafflegab the news media that the EMP from the test shot triggered their backup model back at the assembly shop. Plausible deniability, in other words.

re: #420 Hengineer

Was that one sentence or a paragraph or both?

Both, with intent to illustrate frustration, absurdity as well as futility we face today and in the future in America 'under' our 'chosen' (albeit force-fed) leadership...or lack thereof.
We are in dire run-on sentence and never-ending paragraph times as America falls victim to a new disease, a malaise called political euthanasia. Our soon-to-be CIC and his Dem cronies have power of attorney over us. The needle has been inserted and the lethal drip flows at their leave.
If this great nation is to die in increments at the gloveless, bacteria-infested hands of elected buffoons, I need my run-ons for pain on occasion.
