Mumbai Terrorism Updates

The latest word on the news networks is that eight hostages at that Chabad center in Mumbai have been released. Three terrorists were killed at the Taj Mahal Hotel, but one is still holed up inside. There may still be hostages inside the Oberoi Hotel. The death toll is now over 100.

The “Deccan Mujahideen” group claimed responsibility, but no one has ever heard of them before. This is probably a throwaway name for one of the Pakistani Islamist groups, such as Lashkar-e-Taiba.

Yeshiva WN On this:

UPDATE 1:05PM EST / 20:05PM IL: Once again, there is much confusion surrounding the latest report, this time attributed to the Israeli diplomatic sources. It appears up to 15 hostages have been released by terrorists in Mumbai, but not from the Chabad House as fist believed, but from near the Chabad House. Once again, there is no definitive source. There is no explanation accompanying the statement, which is ambiguous at best.

Foreign Ministry officials are reporting however that on Thursday afternoon, a female hostage in the Chabad House phone Israeli consular officials in New Delhi stating she has a gun pointed to her head and the terrorists are demanding the release of prisoners in India.

Near Chabad house? This is confusing

If there's hostages, then there must be demands. What are they?

Free the "Indian Mujahideen" meaning the SIMI leaders and other Jihadis captured over the past year, and other demands for a free Kashmir. etc.

Pakistan back to its old ways. Trying to destroy the Indian economy because it is seriously eclipsing that of Palistan, proving once again that Islam is the cause of economic stagnation, if not actual regression.

20 Macaroon  Thu, Nov 27, 2008 10:46:55am

Indian TV is reporting 125 dead.

They claim the Taj has been "cleared" by the army, and 6 hostages have been rescued.

It sounds like the attacks hit a number of targets in Mumbai, including the Taj, a railstation, and some random shootings.

On Indian TV they have a crawler at the bottom of the screen where people can "post". People here are REALLY angry and are demanding action.

(I happen to be in India at the moment, but far away from Mumbai. The only thing I have really been worrying about today is the water covered roads from the heavy rains.)

21 Kenneth  Thu, Nov 27, 2008 10:47:00am

Strategic expert Uday Bhaskar said the attacks could inflame tensions between Hindus and Muslims. "The fact that they were trying to segregate British and American passport holders definitely suggests Islamist fervour," he said.

"There are indications that the perpetrators of the crime, who arrived in Mumbai by boats, are Pakistani nationals," authoritative sources said.

#38 Victrola,

I heard an Indian man pleading with Michael Medved yesterday to please explain why it is that we Americans call Pakistan an "ally".

That's a really good question.

If Barak Obama is speaking the truth in his condemnation of Pakistan, then he might be a better President than we think.

That being said, I realize our relationship with Pakistan is built on practical reality. We can't fight with everyone all at once, and we do not want war with a nuclear-armed state, especially when they are willing to play ball with us to some extent.

That being said, Pakistan is a very dangerous country, and they are probably more dangerous to the world at large than Iran is at this time.

The “Deccan Mujahideen” group claimed responsibility, but no one has ever heard of them before. This is probably a throwaway name for one of the Pakistani Islamist groups, such as Lashkar-e-Taiba.

Considering that the terrorists appear to be barely more than children (most of them don't look over 15), the perps themselves appear to be "throwaways". Jihadi cannon fodder, in other words.

A suicide car bomber targeting a convoy of foreign troops exploded about 200 yards (meters) outside the U.S. Embassy in Kabul on Thursday, killing at least four Afghan bystanders as people entered the compound for a Thanksgiving Day race.

At least 18 others were wounded in the morning attack, said Abdullah Fahim, a health ministry spokesman. Police officer Abdul Manan said the explosion was set off by a suicide bomber in a Toyota Corolla.

OT, but I thought (like me) some might be interested in this for the holidays - Michael Medved is promoting the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews , a program that provides meals and medication for Jewish children, elderly, terror victims and Holocaust suvivors living abroad. Seems very cool, to me - medication for a year for one is only $56, and there are larger gifts, too.

I don't intend to solicit, just inform - if this is against guidelines in some way (I don't see anything like that, but I could miss it if it's buried on the site), I apologize in advance and expect this will be pulled.

Look, India has been targeted by the Islamists for years - well before Bush became President and declared a war on terror (and those are just the major attacks - and doesn't count the three wars between Pakistan and India and the ongoing skirmishes over Jammu-Kashmir). To claim that this is somehow connected to the GWOT is asinine. It shows a stunning lack of historical knowledge or even rational thought. It does show that BDS is alive and well as is appeasement.

What would you expect the Pakistanis to say, knowing full well that if India believed Pakistan's government were behind the attacks it could spell the start of a major conflict. It's in their interest to either show that it was some Islamist group operating inside India or operating in Pakistan that went undetected by Pakistan or other intel services but that the Pakistanis were going to be cracking down in a hard way.

I suspect that with the focus being on HuJI, it may mean closer coordination between Pakistan and India and a bigger crackdown on Islamists, the opposite of what the Islamists were hoping for.

They went after Americans and Brits, but I wouldn't think to call this an attack on America, or on Americans in general.

I see this as an attack on India.

Muslims hate all sorts of people all over the world, and little of their hatred has to do with Jews or Israel. That's my point.

re: #81 lawhawk

Look, India has been targeted by the Islamists for years - well before Bush became President and declared a war on terror (and those are just the major attacks - and doesn't count the three wars between Pakistan and India and the ongoing skirmishes over Jammu-Kashmir). To claim that this is somehow connected to the GWOT is asinine. It shows a stunning lack of historical knowledge or even rational thought. It does show that BDS is alive and well as is appeasement.

It also shows that media types think that what little bit they have learned in school about history is quite sufficient, thank you very much, and that they see no need to inform themselves (or even study!) any further.

They probably have no idea about how India and Pakistan came into being in 1947 ...

Because these are Pakistani groups that have direct and proclaimed alliance with Al Qaeda, that happened Sept. 2007

Someone on TV (I can't remember who, or where - Fox News maybe) suggested these attacks may be in retaliation for cross-border raids into North Waziristan by the US (and British?) military against AQ hideouts, with India just being the place AQ could get to.

Wonder if the Indians allow waterboarding?

I somehow doubt that the Indians, be it the people in the streets or the police and armed forces, are particularly interested in what AI and other 'human right' proponents have to say on how to run their investigations or how to treat the caught terrorists ...

Useless rubbish, of the same caliber as saying the 9/11 attacks were a response to the war in Iraq ...

This was well planned, the terrorists were well drilled, the Indian Government had early warnings in the summer, and if this was 'just' against Brits and Americans, then why would they also attack a Jewish centre, a local airport, and the railway station?

I suspect that with the focus being on HuJI, it may mean closer coordination between Pakistan and India and a bigger crackdown on Islamists, the opposite of what the Islamists were hoping for.

That would be nice but I don't think Pakistan has the will to crack down. I'm hoping that pressure from India, Afghanistan and the US will force them to change but I just don't see them controlling their terrorism anytime soon.

Agree.
They've not been able to control their terrorists in the past, they are incapable of doing it now, and they seem to lack the will of even trying it.

The "world" does not give a shit about "world opinion". The fricken' French and Belgians complained about the use of waterboarding on 3 terrorists by the CIA. These are the same two countries which aided & abetted the Rwanda genocide. And don't talk to me about the Germans, the Russians, the Chinese or any Arab country. My guess is that the “the Deccan Mujahideen” is one of those Saturday-night special terrorist groups, good for one or two operations only before it too fades into the mists of deniability. Now maybe if Israel just withdrew from Gaza, the West Bank or simply vanished from the face of the earth, none of this would happen. Or maybe if the West apologized for something, anything, name it … then none of this would happen. Try anything, because the alternative is to resist. And that will never do.
112 Kosh's Shadow  Thu, Nov 27, 2008 12:11:41pm

If I were running India, I'd execute all Islamic terrorists held in prison, saying "We want to make sure that no more hostages are taken to get these scumbags released."
And I'd make comments about annexing Kashmir should attacks continue.

113 miguelj  Thu, Nov 27, 2008 12:24:35pm

How definite is that the hostages in Chabad House (Indian TV calls it "Tchabad") are free? The Debka site makes no mention of it yet. Let's hope.
Anyone have a link to a definitive word?

BTW, the TV quotes Indians who were there as saying that the terrorists spoke an "unknown" language, and others that they sometimes spoke Hindi, but with a Punjabi accent. That points to Kashmir and Pakistan.

For something this big, elements of the Pakistani govt (ISI?) have to be involved, seems like. We have a saying in Spanish: "Tira la piedra y esconde la mano."

A General (speaking to Indian television) -- General Hooda -- stated that the terrorists inside the hotels were communicating with each other in Punjabi.

There are also reports that the terrorists were inside the hotels (possibly) months in advance...they operated "advanced control centers"...in other words, the terrorists in the hotel rooms may have been coordinating the terrorists outside and directing them...

The “Deccan Mujahideen” group claimed responsibility, but no one has ever heard of them before. This is probably a throwaway name for one of the Pakistani Islamist groups, such as Lashkar-e-Taiba.

Imagine that--a terrorist sock puppet.

Mumbai attackers may be Pakistani nationals

"There are indications that the perpetrators of the crime, who arrived in Mumbai by boats, are Pakistani nationals," authoritative sources said.

The indications are based on information gathered from captured terrorists, the sources said.

This goes a long way in explaining why the Indian government didn't have any Intel on this. Planing and staging area in another country.

That's good news. It means Muslims in India, even Islamists, had no clue this was going on. It means (God willing) no pogroms against non-Islamist, innocent Muslim civilians.

The Pakistan Connection
Evidence is still sketchy, but tensions are already rising between India and its nuclear-armed neighbor.

NEWSWEEK WEB EXCLUSIVE
Nov 27, 2008 %P% Updated: 2:25 p.m. ET Nov 27, 2008
Around 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, a band of 10 young armed militants zoomed up to a fishermen's colony in Colaba, on the Mumbai waterfront, in inflatable Zodiac speedboats. Locals confronted them: unlike the dark-skinned Mumbai fishermen, who speak only Marathi, the regional dialect, the intruders were young, tall and fair-skinned and spoke Urdu with a northern accent. According to local press, the gunmen reportedly told them to mind their business, then gave a raised-thumb gesture, and splitting into small groups, walked off into two different directions. The fishermen reported the suspicious men to a police post nearby, but the tip-off failed to rouse the cops to action.

Maybe they thought they could push their luck. I hope to hell GW Bush tells our guys in Afghanistan to go all out, at least until Jan 19.

We've got Predators and Reapers over there that could clean out a whole lot of Paki terrorist dens if the commander in chief will give them the green light.

Hello? It's not India vs. Pakistan. It's Islamic terrorists vs. unarmed innocent people.

128 DocDale  Thu, Nov 27, 2008 4:00:35pm

One thing is standing out in all this, although it may not be obvious to people from outside the British Commonwealth: the effect on India's national sport, cricket. Tours to Pakistan have routinely been cancelled in the past thanks to Islamist terrorism, and India and Pakistan went through a long patch where they didn't play any tests against each other.

However, to my knowledge, terror attacks in India proper have never resulted in the cancellation of a single cricket match. By contrast, these attacks have scuppered the current England tour, the Champions league and the ICL 20/20 tournament. That's three MAJOR tournaments, at the top of the season. It's like has never been seen before.

This may sound trivial and weird, but in many ways cricket is India's national religion, not Hinduism. Traditionally it has always brought the country together; this sort of disruption is genuinely something new.
