Tech Note: Live Comment Updates

Science | Thu, Nov 27, 2008 at 11:43:17 am PST

We have a new feature on the LGF front page: if you’re registered and logged in, the last comment information that shows at the bottom right of each article is now live.

Every 15 seconds an Ajax routine checks the last comment for each article on the front page, and if there’s a new comment the information is updated with the new total number of comments, and the username of the last commenter. With a fade-in effect, of course. And as always, hovering over the username shows a small excerpt of the comment.

Lets not forget that some of those 'Ticks" are US companies, with US stockholders, and US workers. Don't get me wrong! The $4.25 a gallon we were paying less than 2 months ago was ridiculous, but I think where it's at (or perhaps just a little lower) is resonable. Any lower than that and jobs/ investments/ companies could start hurting

Happy thanks giving to all lizards who celebrate.

I am giving thanks this morning, that my cousin's husband was not the pilot of the Air NZ a320 that crashed in the mediterranean. It was a training flight and all 7 died. I phoned the family home and he knew them all so he is upset at this loss. My prayers for the families of those who have perished.

You just never know.

The price got way too high. All the countries that have oil as their only means of support are hurting bad now. I remember OPEC spouting off that $140 was fair price for a barrel. Hey Sheik, I think $40 is a good price!

36 Slumbering Behemoth  Thu, Nov 27, 2008 12:23:10pm

This one time, on Thanksgiving....

...I went to the local 7-11 for some beer. It was dead, no one anywhere. No cars, no nothing. Well, there was one car in the parking lot. Four guys were getting geared up for a raid. I can't remember what agency, but they were official. They were having a good laugh about catching some perp off guard on an early Thanksgiving morning.

I spent that day being thankful I wasn't the perp, nor one of the agents. What a way to spend the holidays.

I happened to be in a place last night with the TV on to the NBC nightly news with Brian Williams. Mumbai was top story, with extensive coverage. Nowhere in the lengthy report was the words 'Muslim' or 'Islamic' used. By that time, Islamists were known to be behind the attacks for several hours. The phony group “Deccan Mujahideen” was already known to be the name associated with the attackers, but nowhere in the NBC report was that name used. Instead, Williams' reporter said a 'previously unnamed' group had claimed responsibility. NBC did not identify them by the name “Deccan Mujahideen”. In my opinion -- too Islamic.

The majors are carrying forward the Obama Rules they imposed on themselves during the election into a permanent state of self-censorship informed, I suppose, by the calculus of self-hatred.

I think these Mumbai attacks are designed to shift the battlefield away from the US and allied pursuit of AQ into the Afgh/Pak border. I think AQ wants to raise the India/Pak conflict now. Putting Pakistan on tenterhooks vis a vis the nuclear charged Indian border will politically dis-enable Pakistan from cooperating with Western allies on their Afgh. border.

IAEA Cheif "Baffled" Over Lack Of Satellite Photos Of Syrian Nuclear Facility Supposedly Bombed By Israel

Some choice quotes:

While the agency was unable to find satellite images immediately after the bombing, it acquired photos showing the building at other stages. An IAEA report said those images and other information showed the bombed building had the features of a reactor, adding that agency inspectors had found traces of processed uranium on location.

On Iran, ElBaradei told the meeting that he "cannot exclude the existence of possible military dimensions to Iran's nuclear program."

International Atomic Energy Agency chief Mohamed ElBaradei did not point any fingers in the "baffling" failure of his agency's efforts to obtain the images of the Syrian site immediately after it was bombed by Israel last year.

But diplomats familiar with the IAEA's Syria investigation said agency officials were considering several scenarios, including the possibility that Syria or other nations with an interest in a cover-up had bought the photos and all rights to them from commercial satellite companies.

Besides the rediculously mispronounced names for Chabad, and Rabbi, by the FOX News woman, I noticed that they were speaking to the Ambassador from Israel to the United States. What bothers/confuses me about this is why they weren't speaking to the Ambassadors, or the representatives of the Countries these Chabad employees were from?

OR were the Chabad members actually from Israel? Does anyone know?

One weird side effect of the new feature. I posted on the Open thread, so it said I posted 9 seconds ago on the front page. And it stayed that way as posts on this new thread updated over and over. The time only updated if I reloaded the page.

But then, it would be distracting to have that time updating every 15 seconds when there's no activity.

Obama identified a couple of easy, everyday ways people can help make their home a greener place -- turning off lights, unplugging chargers for electrical devices when not in use.

There is no good thing that can happen in an economy without it hurting someone. If we don't have enough hurricanes, demand for plywood can fall and workers at the plywood factory may face layoffs. That's why we have an unemployment insurance system. We don't have to wish for hurricanes so they can have more work.

But not to worry. When it comes to the price of oil, we'll get our hurricanes. Oil demand will rise at the current price, and then the price will drift back up. The average price of a barrel of oil over the next 5-10 years will probably be well above $80, and perhaps over $100. Gasoline prices will go back up to over $3 per gallon. Maybe more. Oil is more valuable than it used to be, because it can power a motor vehicle further, it can be feedstock to more advanced plastics, and so on. Also, there are more people in the market for it. India and China have become industrial societies. They're not full blown industrial, but they've come far enough to hugely affect the demand for oil. Supply cannot keep up. Search as we might, there's just not that much yet to be discovered and easily extracted.

Maybe this explains my godlessness......
Vatican warns mobile phones are bad for the soul

Father Federico Lombardi, the Pope’s spokesman, said that without a spiritual life, people risked losing their souls.

“In the age of the cell phone and the internet it is probably more difficult than before to protect silence and to nourish the interior dimension of life,” Father Lombardi told the Vatican television show Octavia Dies. “It is difficult but necessary.”
.....
The Vatican has long counselled against the excesses of modern life. Last month, Pope Benedict XVI said that the current global financial crisis was proof that the pursuit of money and success is pointless, and that wealth meant nothing.

“Nations once rich in faith and vocations are losing their own identity under the harmful and destructive influence of a certain modern culture,” he told a recent assembly of the Synod.
