Math fascinates me, mostly because I'm a word person. Numbers are not my thing--I transpose them in equations and make other stupid mistakes. Whereas there are only 26 letters of the alphabet and a finite number of words, there is an infinite number of numbers.

no. not really.

I just saw them interview a guy from the U.S. that was a victim of the Terrorist attack in India, and I was exceptionally impressed with his statements. He also happened to be Jewish, so the host asked him what it felt like to hear about the Jews that were killed, and how it feels to be constantly targeted.

The guy gave a response to the point of: We are strong, These guys are terrorists that don't care if you vote Left or Right, their ideology is disgusting, we must do something, and Jews are resiliant, and are probably today buying tickets to go to Israel, won't be made to live in fear/change our lives, have always suffered these types of things, are resiliant, and won't back down.

Then a bit later Wolf Blitzer was hopeing "cooling heads would prevail". I am just wondering why we need "cooler heads" when people are attacking us.

Byting naughty bits, say no more, say no more!
From one of the posters:
"I ran between two occupied swings once as a kid and got knocked out cold when one boy's foot caught me in the jaw. Therefore I introduce the Swing Rule: No running between the swings."
Question, did you live in a swing state now?

It also appears that some Brits are worth more than others:
"Tory Shadow Immigration Minister Arrested by London Police for allegedly disclosing Security Ministry's hiring of illegal aliens and the hiring of an illegal alien by the Labor House of Commons. This has caused a fury in Parliament as the article below discloses:

Cross-party fury over MP's arrest

Cameron: In our democracy I do not think what has happened is right
The Lib Dems have called shadow immigration minister Damian Green's arrest a "mayday warning" for democracy amid cross-party anger over the move. Mr Green was arrested, held for nine hours and had his two homes and offices searched by police investigating alleged leaks from the Home Office. Tory leader David Cameron called the police operation "alarming" and said the government had questions to answer. But the Home Office said ministers were not informed until after the arrest.

'Democracy in danger'
Mr Cameron, London mayor Boris Johnson and Commons Speaker Michael Martin were all informed about the raids. But Downing Street insisted ministers had not been given advance warning and Prime Minister Gordon Brown said it was purely a police matter. The decision to make today's arrest was taken solely by the MPS without any ministerial knowledge or approval

"I had no prior knowledge, the home secretary had no prior knowledge, I know of no other minister who had any prior knowledge," he told Sky News, adding: "I knew about it only after it had happened." But the former Conservative Home Secretary and Tory leader, Michael Howard, said he would be "astonished" if he had not been told about the police investigation when in office. "I would have expected to be told. This was an investigation we know initiated by the Home Office. Are we to believe that nobody in the Home Office was told?" He added: "If nobody knew it tells you something about the way government is working at the present time, and about the relations between ministers and senior civil servants."

Mr Green was not charged with any offence but was released on bail until February, when he could face further questioning. The Ashford MP, the Tories' immigration spokesman since 2005, has denied any wrongdoing and said "opposition politicians have a duty to hold the government to account". Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg told the BBC that he was "really shocked" by Mr Green's arrest. Nick Clegg said the arrest was a "mayday warning" for democracy in Britain. "This is something you might expect from a tin-pot dictatorship, not in a modern democracy," he said.
Given the culture of "extraordinary secrecy" in Whitehall, it was getting harder to hold the government to account and opposition MPs had a constitutional duty to keep "ministers on their toes", he added. He called on Gordon Brown to "rule out any further use of anti-terrorism powers in cases that have nothing to do with terrorism," although the Metropolitan Police stressed the arrest was made under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act and not anti-terror legislation....

Islamic terrorism will end only when people start treating Islamic terrorists the way the people in Fallulujah treated the American contractors. When people don't run screaming from the gunmen, but overwhelm them and tear them into tiny ... bits.

The strategy should be to inflict on them what they fear most.
They tell us that they do not fear death & they demonstrate that.
What they fear is not gaining entry to heaven to be with Allah.
Assure them that we will deny them entry. They will be executed with bacon in their mouths & buried upside down. Black Jack Pershing knew that & it worked.

Math fascinates me, mostly because I'm a word person. Numbers are not my thing--I transpose them in equations and make other stupid mistakes. Whereas there are only 26 letters of the alphabet and a finite number of words, there is an infinite number of numbers.

Afternoon, Lizards.

I'm just the opposite. I transpose letters, especially when I'm typing (for instance, I just now typed "Lizrads' and had to correct it.) No, I'm not dyslexic, just sort of dumb.

On the math side, I've always been the guy who finished the quiz in class before everybody else. And who gets fascinated by screwy facts, like the fact that back when I was in college, computers programmed in binary had trouble handling dates sequentially because there were 365 days in a non-leap year, and 365 is the product of two prime numbers, 5 and 73. Leap years with 366 days were no problem, because 366 is divisible by 2 or multiples thereof, which made the old IBM mainframes happy.

So if you ever wondered why, back in the day, your paycheck kept being late, this might just be one reason. I know mine often was.

/And yes, I do watch Numbers every Friday night. I love that show.

Good mom. I think those rules lead to bullying. I love the scene in a Christmas Story when Ralphie finally beats up the bully. He left them alone after that.

OK, a quick story and then off to cook.

In 5th Grade my oldest (Jon) had a teacher he could not take -- the man was always forcing him to follow all of his rules. For example, if you did not fold your homework in half and put you name in the upper right hand corner you got points taken off. It drove him nuts.

So one day he was doing something in class and for some reason, there was only one other kid with them. And this kid, the class bully, came over to my son's desk, and took a pencil. Well, Jon had enough, and he just hauled off and hit him. The bully stood there shocked, and Jon turned and saw that the teacher saw the whole thing. Jon's heart sunk -- the school has a zero tolerance policy. The teacher smiled at Jon, nodded and winked, and turned away.

The bully just gave Jon his pencil back and didn't say a word -- and never bothered him again.

Jon came home and told me the story and ended with, That Mr A, he's OK. And Jon never had a problem following his 'stupid' rules again.

If you want to stop or lessen bullying, whose behaviour are you more likely to be able to change? The bully, who has already shown a penchant for disobeying direction, or the victim?

A recent study (by NIH), quoted by AP this AM on the radio, says that bullies are bullies because (a) their brains are actually wired differently , so that they get a pleasure reaction from hurting people and (b) the emotional "circuit breaker" that most of us have that keeps us from doing wrong (like maybe a conscience?) doesn't exist in their makeup.

Which probably explains terrorists, gang-bangers, and maybe even a few politicians.

A Fatah terrorist in Gaza was killed during terrorist training in 2005, and more than three years later the cellphone video recording documenting the event is circulating in terrorist websites.

The Blue Eye website, which brings this information, calls the video "very rare."

It shows Fatah terrorist Khalid Hamid of Khan Younis trying to fire an RPG at a vehicle marked with a More..n Israeli flag. The rocket goes off prematurely and the other terrorists on the scene begin shouting 'Allahu Akbar' and crying after realizing Hamid is hurt.

Allahu Ackbar, indeed.

2,700-year-old marijuana found in Chinese tomb

Researchers say they have located the world's oldest stash of marijuana, in a tomb in a remote part of China.

The cache of cannabis is about 2,700 years old and was clearly ``cultivated for psychoactive purposes," rather than as fibre for clothing or as food, says a research paper in the Journal of Experimental Botany.

The 789 grams of dried cannabis was buried alongside a light-haired, blue-eyed Caucasian man, likely a shaman of the Gushi culture, near Turpan in northwestern China.

HOW TO STOP ISLAMIC TERRORISTS...... it worked once in our History...

Once in U.S. history an episode of Islamic terrorism was very quickly stopped. It happened in the Philippines about 1911, when Gen. John J. Pershing was in command of the garrison. There had been numerous Islamic terrorist attacks, so "Black Jack" told his boys to catch the perps and teach them a lesson.

Forced to dig their own graves, the terrorists were all tied to posts, execution style. The U.S. soldiers then brought in pigs and slaughtered them, rubbing their bullets in the blood and fat. Thus, the terrorists were terrorized; they saw that they would be contaminated with hogs' blood. This would mean that they could not enter Heaven, even if they died as terrorist martyrs.

All but one was shot, their bodies dumped into the grave, and the hog guts dumped atop the bodies. The lone survivor was allowed to escape back to the terrorist camp and tell his brethren what happened to the others. This brought a stop to terrorism in the Philippines for the next 50 years.

Pointing a gun into the face of Islamic terrorists won't make them flinch.

They welcome the chance to die for Allah. Like Gen. Pershing, we must show them that they won't get to Muslim heaven (which they believe has an endless supply of virgins) but instead will die with the hated pigs of the devil.

Allahu achbar means god is greater. What is left out is what this Allah is greater than. It is merely assumed that he (she? it?) is greater than some other god—perhaps Allah is only greater than rancid milk curds. What is Allah greater than?

Historically, all pirate "outbreaks" have ended abruptly when the pirates succeeded in pissing off one or more major naval powers enough to do exactly that, and keep doing it until they ran out of targets.

Note to would-be pirates; screwing with vital commerce is a terrific way to piss off major naval powers. Ask the Cilicians, a German pirate named Stortebeker, Edward Teach aka "Blackbeard", Bartholomew Roberts, and/or the Barbary States.

Please note that making such inquiries requires either a Ouija board, a trance medium- or just the capacity to read and absorb the contents of any decent historical text on the subject.

/My guess is, most wannabee pirates around today flunked History.

This was in a suburban Michigan High School.

I was the smallest guy in my class (grad in 68), I was beat on all of the time by the Jocks. If I dared to strike back (or not) if the teacher saw I was sent home...the Jocks went back to class laughing....

Once when confronted with a bleeding skull by my parents, the comment by the Principal was "Well boys will be boys". They said I was just asking for it being so small.

A friend of mine had the same problem in a neighboring school. His problem was Polio at the age of 10 and crutches. The jocks of that school that it was great fun too. So one day he produced a baseball bat out his pack and took on the brave trio that wanted to punch him out. He had to finish High School in a different state and only avoided prosecution because the DA didn't want the spectacle of three 6 ft 200+ lb men calling out a small regular guy in crutches in court saying he was picking on them.

The fighting back thing hasn't always worked for a long time now.

re: #223 bellamags

I vote for natural selection to take them out.

Anyone who talks about how "dangerous" our society is today needs to realize that one reason we have a seemingly large number of incompetent, anti-social, or simply dysfunctional people around is that our society is in fact the safest in known history. Whether the person in question is an amoral troublemaker, a simply confused type who makes trouble as a way of "acting out", or (in another context) is simply someone who never bothers to think before they act and ends up making a mess purely inadvertently (see H. Beam Piper's short story, "Day of the Moron"), the question you have to ask is;

In an earlier age, would this person have survived to reach adulthood?

In most cases, the answer would be "no". Previous eras even in our own Western culture were far more brutally Darwinian than our modern world. Even if you disregard wars, pestilence, etc., the fact remains that in earlier ages, stupid behavior tended to be self-correcting- because the person behaving so rarely survived to repeat the behavior. Someone behaving like a modern-day bully would probably have been done in by somebody they irritated 400 years ago. And someone today who habitually drives like an idiot would probably have killed themselves rather quickly trying to operate a team of draft horses just a century or so back.

I've always assumed that there's a price for everything. The price of our extremely safe society, at least in part, is that stupidity is apparently no longer a self-correcting problem.

It worked for me early on- I was picked on for being overweight and getting straight A's. Eventually, when the school authorities decided that it was my fault for being such a tempting target (think- get beat up, end up in detention, bully gets a note sent home- which parents never bothered to read anyway, assuming they even saw it), I just stood there and let the would-be tough guys hit me.

After they wore themselves out and got bruised knuckles without making me yell, cry, fall down or even breathe hard, they decided that I wasn't entertaining any more.

cheers

We used to get ours every year from a tree farm about a mile from my old home. It's closed now, though, as the people who ran it passed away. A six-footer was about $10.

Biggest problem? Multiple kittens and cats see Christmas tree, lots of pretty lights, shiny stuff, tinkling things, etc., and immediately think, "Instant Kitty Jungle Gym!"

Yeah. I couldn't believe it. There were quite a few at that price, so maybe as the season goes on, the prices will come down. However, there were quite a few people buying them. Guess the economy for some isn't too bad.

Christmas trees are 'sustainable', because you can plant more. And the industry causes there to be Christmas tree farms, full of trees that would otherwise not be planted. The Christmas tree you buy has been cleaning the atmosphere and eating up carbon for years and years, and because you buy it, more will be planted to continue the work.

And it is totally biodegradable.

Friend of mine (who has since passed) took another friend of mine to "find their own tree". Harold took Carol out into the woods and found the most perfectly shaped and sized Christmas tree in the history of the world.

He cut it down. They heard a voice shouting, he said "Run" and they ran away dragging the tree behind him. They got away. Harold had taken her to a Christmas tree farm as a prank.

Making the story better? Carol is a minister. She told the story at his eulogy.

re: #252 WrathofG-d My opinion, so take it for it's worth- I suspect that "Ultra=Orthodox" is a designation on the same lines as "Christian fundamentalist". By that I mean the term is used to imply some extreme committment to the religion, much as we use "radical Islam". It is a form of equivocation, with no understanding of the doctrinal or theological bases for differentiation from "Reformed Jews" or the even more confusing "Messianic Jews". I believe that to most (journalists) who use these terms all these names denote some degree of fanaticism and thus are comparable in expected behavior. /We're all just waitin on the Hasidic assault on Mecca, and the Holy Meteor!

I've never considered myself a greenie. I purchase a burlap balled cedar every year and decorate it for our front porch which faces an outside full glass door so I can see it and it has a protective overhang. The cats, 4 of them, have had gastric problems from eating our live fresh cut trees that were brought into the house.
I do love the smell of cedar when you brush it.
The trees then go into the ground in the spring. I now have a great privacy hedge next to my car garage. And the smell all year round.

Anyone here an audiophile, AV expert, etc? Trying to get answers relating to HDMI. Specifically, are there any receivers where you can use HDMI control through the receiver and still get overlay/osd on the screen?

Replaced my Denon AVR-2803 with a Pioneer VSX-03THX and this is my first dance with HDMI anything. Everything is working really well (except for the above mentioned gripe and the handshake delay with HDMI) with a universal remote.

I'm wondering what the advantages are (except for better sound from the new receiver) by going with all HDMI through the receiver instead of just connecting the components directly to the TV for video via HDMI and using optical for the audio to the receiver.

Thanks.

re: #298 yah

Two days before Christmas, many years ago when I was really really poor, my 4 year old begged and begged me for a real Christmas Tree. All we had was a little ceramic tree.
I went to Piggly Wiggly for groceries. They had one pitiful tree left out side. I asked how much money it was. The bagger told me I could have it for free. By the time I got it home and inside, there was hardly a needle left on the tree. I decorated it and my four year old was was happy. So was I.
I

We once did that. My husband had been out of town on business for most of the month, so when he got home we went looking for a tree. Found one that was so sad, we called it our "Charlie Brown" tree. Got it cheap and most of it's needles were gone too by the time we got home.
We remember it fondly as our favorite real tree.

One year when I first met my future wife I decided not to go home for Christmas because she was in the States from England and couldn't go home to see her family. I lived in a small apartment in Chicago and couldn't think of fitting a tree in there, not to mention hauling it up 4 flights of stairs. We drank some wine on Christmas Eve and last minute decided we HAD to have a Christmas tree. About 8pm we went searching. Finally found one lot still open on the west side, hardly a tree to be found in it, and I talked the attendant into looking the other way while we "borrowed" the tree since it didn't have a home this late on Christmas Eve.

OK, maybe not the original Christmas story of goodwill to all mankind, but damn that was a great tree, bare branches be damned.

By the way, we ended up the night at a bar on West Grand Ave. near Damen called The Alcohol Abuse Center. Fitting name for the crew holed up there that night. Best Christmas Ever!

re: #340 Soona'

Actually, it's pagen. That should turn the libs on.

It very well may be - but that's not how it's looked upon:

Christmas Day (December 25)

"Most Protestants and Roman Catholics and some Orthodox Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus on December 25. Before the 19th century, many Americans worked on Christmas, but in the industrial era the holiday began also to honor universal values, such as home, children and family life, and to incorporate secular customs like exchanging gifts and cards, and the decoration and display of evergreen "Christmas Trees." Congress proclaimed Christmas a federal holiday in 1870. In 1999, a federal court acknowledged these secular aspects in rejecting a claim that the holiday impermissibly endorsed and furthered a particular religious belief."

Which is why Santa Claus is the mascot of Christmas - and not the baby Jesus, who's birthday it is. This way everybody can join in the fun.

At least, that was how it was originally intended.

I do not mean to be divisive or mean, but the filioque is heresy—depending on which extreme you wish to pursue, the Trinity is made to be a Sabellian Monad, or three gods, or a Duality by the addition of the filioque "and from the Son" into the Nicene Creed by the Latin church.

Subject: Talking/Praying

A female CNN journalist heard about a very old Jewish man who had been going to the Wailing Wall to pray, twice a day, every day, for a long, long time.

So she went to check it out. She went to the Wailing Wall and there he was, walking slowly up to the holy site.

She watched him pray and after about 45 minutes, when he turned to leave, using a cane and moving very slowly,
she approached him for an interview.

"Pardon me, sir, I'm Rebecca Smith from CNN. What's your name?

"Morris Fishbienstein," he replied.

"Sir, how long have you been coming to the Wailing Wall and praying?"

"For about 60 years."

"60 years! That's amazing! What do you pray for?"

"I pray for peace between the Christians, Jews and the Muslims."

"I pray for all the wars and all the hatred to stop. "

"I pray for all our children to grow up safely as responsible adults, and to love their fellow man."

"How do you feel after doing this for 60 years?"

"Like I'm talking to a wall!"

Mebbe. It's a tricky thing to prove.

I used to lie awake nights as a child pondering things like that.

That's a cute story, but IIRC there was no 91 fwy when there were White Front stores in SoCal.

Zodys was even chincier than KMart. They also went belly up when I was a kid. How about Gemco? Fedco? At lease White Front had a section where they sold donuts.

Can't drink Guiness. Does that make me a "girly man"?

Means you could be fatter.

re: #382 vapig

Real Christmas trees, everyone walking around with a smile on their face and nice words to say to each other. Church Christmas pageants, children singing caroles in and out of school. Absolutely no one afraid to say "Merry Christmas". My parents glowing on Christmas mornings when we kids would start unwrapping our presents. Good memories.

If I lived in the desert, I'd have a cactus garden. They're attractive, use very little water, and keep the neighborhood kids out of your yard! :-)

Exactly!

Evening Lizards. I'm happy to announce a new addition to the x-wing household today. Seven pounds and twenty-seven inches. Very aggressive even.

Fedco lasted a long time but was pretty funky, out there in Lakewood, back in the day.

How about Big A?

You may be right- Lakewood Blvd at Artesia, 1973. Long time ago and many brain cells dead in intervening time. Still, seeing a 7 ft pine tree whistling down the 91 at 60 mph must have been almost as fun to see as it was to do!

Interesting observation from Palm Springs- there is a Braille Institute campus there. All the landscaping is the low-moisture (xenographic?) stuff, which in that area means mostly cacti. When I saw that, I had this mental picture of visually impaired people learning their way around (and all the walkways are 'artistically' curved) and exercising their vocabularies of profanity and obscenity!
