Tech Note: Live Comments, 2

I had to take down the front page live comment updates for a couple of days to figure out why MySQL was deadlocking. We all know how painful that can be.

Turns out that MyISAM tables suffer from an obscure problem related to concurrent reads and writes, that’s exacerbated when the SELECT query uses a GROUP BY clause. The comments at LGF need to be stored in MyISAM tables in order to allow the use of FULLTEXT indexing, which greatly helps with searching. But the Ajax DB query that periodically checked for new comments in each front page thread was causing that deadlock condition.

The solution was to use a separate table in InnoDB format (which doesn’t have the concurrent deadlocking problem) that is updated every time a comment is posted, with just the info needed to display the live comments on the front page. This ends up being much faster as well, which is a good thing since the code runs in every logged-in browser, every 15 seconds. It’s been running for over an hour with no sign of deadlocking, so I’m prepared to pronounce the bug dead.

If that made no sense to you, worry not. Hey, look! An open thread!

.

The last time MySQL deadlocked it took two fire crews, seven cops, a medical staff and three days to remedy the problem.

Hmmm...

Is this why my browser has a CPU usage spike every 15 seconds or so? I thought I had a virus or keylogger -- something trying to "call home" a few times a minute.

I've been trying to chase down that odd, rhythmic spike for months now... and its LGF talking to my browser? That's a relief -- I was thinking I had to wiping my HD and reinstall everything from scratch if I couldn't track down what was causing the spike!

Bad analogy.

With your fake murder analogy it is a rubber knife. Thus, the murder didn't actually happen.

In a love scene, the love might not be real, but the fondling, touching, nakedness, and kissing, etc. is. You might not "mean it", but you sure are actually touching, etc.

To jibe it with your analogy, it would have to be faked by lighting, angle, or some other manner where the real touching didn't take place.

Needless to say at this point I guess...I would very much so consider it Adultry/Cheating.

Wrath's Wonder of the Week:

If you're husband/wife was an actor would you consider on screen love scenes to be Adultry?

A LOVE scene - no. F**king, as in a porno? Hell, yes. On the other hand, I probably wouldn't marry an actor, and I think I can be pretty darn sure I would not marry a porno actor.

My ex did, in fact, commit adultery, and it was common knowledge - I was the last to know. Maryland is not a no-fault divorce state, and he was at fault, to the point where everyone thought he was a rotter - even his friends. HOWEVER, we were adults and got everything material straightened out without lawyers. He paid me the money he owed me for mutual expenses, and he filed (I paid zero for the divorce).

As a matter of fact, adultery is still a crime in Maryland, believe it or not. I used that to scare the crap out of my ex and his stupid gf, to keep their paws off my retirement money. I could easily have sued him on grounds of adultery.

The satanic evil fucks in Mumbai scoped out the Chabad House before making their hit. They probably sat at the Rabbi's table, ate his food and listened to his Torah lecture.

I know that it's wrong for me to use a word like "fuck" but I can't think of any other way to describe these satanic evil fucks.

I agree.

The real problem is this terror operation is easy to duplicated in most cities and was very successful. Ten to 12 people killed almost 200 people, wounded 350 more, and caused tremendous property damage and general economic damage.

I think this terror operation must be taken very seriously and probably punitive actions should be taken.

Technically, it's not 'auto-updating' the same way Weatherbug does, by reloading a whole page. It's just sending a small amount of data back and forth from the server. If it is a problem, let me know.

It could be a problem, as it would increase the number of site accesses. They track that kind of stuff. It's like a whack-a-mole popping up. They're bound to whack it.

When it updates, it's not logged in your history or anything as an additional access to the site. Also, the data transfer is probably so small that in an average company with many people accessing the internet at once it would most likely go unnoticed.

First, no sweat on the divorce. I got good advice from a counselor and several women friends, did what they advised, and got over it quickly. Consequently, I am much MUCH happier now than I was when I was married.

As for you daughter - O.M.G. I am glad that turned out well! Some young ladies might be intimidated into doing something stupid - glad she called her mom and dad.

These things can turn out very badly. As a teen, actress Darryl Hannah narrowly avoided being sold as a sex slave in Las Vegas. She was a student in L.A. when she accepted an offer to model for an album cover in Las Vegas. Once there, she realized the modeling trip was a scam and that she was about to be forced into a sex slave ring. She and another girl escaped out a window and fled.

Consequently, Ms. Hannah has made it her personal mission to do everything she can to stop sexual slavery: Daryl Hannah on Her Fight to Save Women and Children Forced Into a Life of Prostitution

re: #131 buzzdroid

totally agree - when you are dealing with utter and total EVIL, then its perfectly ok to swear a bit.

these islamist terrorists are evil fuckers - and i would rank them alongside the S.S. and Pol Pot in the evilness stakes..

The rabidity that these fucksticks are infected with comes from Islam - Religion of Peace apologists aside. I lived in that region for 5 years in the 90's and saw the root of evil that is it's core message. They either need to fix themselves (i.e., Islam) or we need to fix it for them...and if we do it, it won't be pretty...Just a question of how much of a price they exact before we say we've had enough...

I was thinking about this myself. What are your thoughts on PostGreSQL?

i had a play with it - its a bitch to get into and configure...

not ideal when you dont have a lot of time on your hands. mysql fits that aspect perfectly..

apt-get install mysql5

and bam - you have a database up and running. in about 10 minutes.. thats a HUGE aspect to why its popular. plus its tight integration to PHP.

of course, Sun might fuck it up, and i think its very dangerous that Sun owns it - MySQL should have been bought by somebody like Wikipedia - a non-profit, because so many websites depend on it.

As Taboos Ease, Saudi Girl Group Dares to Rock

They cannot perform in public. They cannot pose for album cover photographs. Even their jam sessions are secret, for fear of offending the religious authorities in this ultraconservative kingdom.

But the members of Saudi Arabia’s first all-girl rock band, the Accolade, are clearly not afraid of taboos.

The band’s first single, “Pinocchio,” has become an underground hit here, with hundreds of young Saudis downloading the song from the group’s MySpace page. Now, the pioneering foursome, all of them college students, want to start playing regular gigs — inside private compounds, of course — and recording an album.

“In Saudi, yes, it’s a challenge,” said the group’s lead singer, Lamia, who has piercings on her left eyebrow and beneath her bottom lip. (Like other band members, she gave only her first name.) “Maybe we’re crazy. But we wanted to do something different.”

oh its alright, it just seems weird that after all that, why not just give you a brand new computer. Computers have become so cheap nowadays that if you're not a "power user", replacing the components just isn't worth it.

Power users are people who literally purchase the best of EVERYTHING and go for the most expensive/newest/upgraded piece of equipment.

Electronics is finicky. We've been having this problem with our main engine control console, where the alarm system would go off randomly and repeatedly (but the plant would be fine). The ship's ET and Chief Engineer worked solid for a week replacing literally every single computer card in there (that dealt with all the I/O's and alarm indicators) and nothing worked. In the end the TANO tech rep finally found a power wire had been stuck up against a bit and the insulation on the wire had been "chewed" through by a little metal "spike" (so to speak) with the ship's vibration, and the 24v power supply had been leeching to ground and directly to the circuit boards.

Perhaps one of the most interesting and colorful words in the English language today is the word "fuck".

It is a magical word which, just by its sound can describe pain, pleasure, love, and hate. In language, "fuck" falls into many grammatical categories.

It can be used as a verb both transitive (John fucked Mary) and intransitive (Mary was fucked by John).

It can be an action verb (John really gives a fuck),

a passive verb (Mary really doesn't give a fuck),

and adverb (Mary is fucking interested in John),

or as a noun (Mary is a terrific fuck).

It can also be used as an interjection (Fuck! I'm late for my date with Mary).

It can even be used as a conjunction (Mary is easy, fuck she's also stupid).

As you can see there are very few words with the overall versatility of the word fuck.

Aside from its sexual connotations, this word can be used to describe many situations:

1. Greetings..."How the fuck are ya?"

2. Fraud..."I got fucked by the car dealer."

3. Resignation..."Oh, fuck it!"

4. Trouble..."I guess I'm fucked now."

5. Aggression..."Fuck you!"

6. Disgust..."Fuck me."

7. Confusion..." What the fuck...?"

8. Displeasure..."Fucking shit man..."

9. Lost..."Where the fuck are we?"

10.Disbelief..."Unfuckingbelievable!"

11.Retaliation..."Up your fucking ass!"

12. Apathy..."Who really gives a fuck?"

13. Suspicion..."Who the fuck are you?"

14. Directions..."Fuck off."

It can be maternal..."Motherfucker!"

It can be used to tell time..."It's four fucking twenty!"

It can be used as an anatomical description..."He's a fucking asshole."

Lastly, it has been used by many notable people throughout history:

"What the fuck was that?" -Mayor of Hiroshima

"That's not a real fucking gun." -John Lennon

"Where the fuck is all this water coming from?" -Captain of the Titanic

"Who the fuck is gonna find out?" -Richard Nixon

"Heads are gonna fucking roll." -Anne Boleyn

"Any fucking idiot could answer that." -Albert Einstein

"It does so fucking look like her!" -Picasso

"You want what on the fucking ceiling?" -Michaelangelo

"Fuck a duck." -Walt Disney

"Houston, we have a big fucking problem." - The crew of Apollo 13

Early data shows strong Black Friday

Sales during the day after Thanksgiving rose 3 percent to $10.6 billion, according to preliminary figures released Saturday by ShopperTrak RCT Corp., a Chicago-based research firm that tracks sales at more than 50,000 retail outlets. Last year, shoppers spent about $10.3 billion on the day after Thanksgiving, dubbed Black Friday because it was historically the sales-packed day when retailers would become profitable for the year.

Good for you, I'm sure mine could run those simultaneously. I also have a Blu-Ray 2x burner as well. I went with the Core 2 Extreme (2.91Ghz) option mainly because I don't multi-task when I'm doing my whole "gaming" bit. This machine can run 98% of Crysis and about 94% of Far Cry 2. I say that because in Crysis I can actually run with all but 1 setting on high, and with anti-aliasing off.

I don't use iTunes. My mp3 players have either been a Cowon or a Creative.
I despise iTunes and the iPod.

My current one is a Creative Zen with 16GB of Flash memory (purchased it in a Duty Free shop in the port of Fujairah. Its sad that at any store in the US the highest I've seen the Zen go is 4 GB, and I know Creative makes them up to 32 GB!)

I bought my wife an 8 gig through their website. It is a refurbished model, but has worked fine for over a year.

dummy me, there's a save link on the map!

The above link is my old high school but the address is wrong.
School

This gets the map and click on the street view and spin it left twice to see the school.

This is Canal Street with the streetcar tracks in the center.

Every street scene on Google that I have checked has had the wrong address and that's fine with me.

---

I done did - hate folks who brag about quitting smoking! LOL!
Didja do it cold turkey?

Not bragging. Diagnosed with emphysema. Don't really care if anyone hates me for quitting.

Cold turkey, yes. With Chantix.

Still hard... every fuckin' day!

re: #358 Flying Dutchman

One of these next days I'll write a French to English (and vice versa) "rude words dictionary" ;-)

I used to have a multilingual "Insult Dictionary."

Subtitled, "How To Be Abusive in Five Languages."

English, French, German, Italian and Spanish.

The one I remember best was "In The Butcher's Shop."

"Das Haninchen miaut ja noch": That rabbit is still meowing.

re: #406 Flying Dutchman

Cause you probably never tried a Mac and don't know what "no problems with a computer" means'

Actually I do, the only problem I've had so far is that my PC got shipped with one of my three HDD's loose (screw came loose, even with them applying LOC-TITE?). After I reinstalled it, no problems at all.

Runs Crysis (crazy graphics game) with no problems at all.

And this is why those who really know about computers are Mac users, Mac OS X (Leopard) is a certified UNIX

You seem to be a Mac power user. I'm referring to the average Mac user.

Thing is... average Mac users become Mac power users! ! !

re: #415 Iron Fist

That can't really happen too fast. We're still fucked for at least the next two years.

The next 4 years. A president's term is 4 years. :)

/And don't even get me started about the possibility of Obama's re-election.

The Duel...

I'd forgotten how good that film was.
Sucked me right in, ya did. Once I watched part 1 (your link) - I had to find parts 2, 3 & 4.
Speilberg really did it up good . . . real good.

re: #420 Iron Fist

2010 is our first oppertunity to kick the Democrats out of control of the House and Senate. It's really to early to tell whether or not we'll have a good shot at it. A lot of that will depend on how Obama does over the next two years. If we are in the middle of another Iranian Hostage Crisis on the foreign front and fighting gun control on the domestic front, then we'll probably stand a good chance of doing to Obama what we did to Clinton in 1994.

If everything is (at least on the surface) running smoothly then we are going to have a tough row to hoe. Nevertheless, I'm clinging bitterly to the hope that we can do well in the mid-term elections.

Good point. But if we do manage to squeeze in a Republican majority in '10, Obama will still have veto power. We would need to get more than 2/3 majority in order to have the ability to override, and I don't know if I can envision that in two years, unless Barack royally screws up and triggers a mass exodus to the Republican party.

Yeah, isn't Charles (easy exemple) doing that all day long ...

PS : I dinged you down by mistake, sorry.

Dinged him down on purpose!
Typical Windoze-user asshole remark. Can't play long without playing dirty. It's what happens when they run out of logical arguments.

re: #306 Hengineer

Like I said, for those who don't know how to use computers.
Most people who have trouble with PCs are people who really don't know what their doing and either end up with viruses, spyware or an overloaded PC.

Quite true. A well-set-up PC is a breeze to use, and quite reliable. There's a good variety of utilities available to keep it that way, too.

A Mac has too much of a firewall between the user and the nuts-and-bolts of the thing, for my liking.

Pop the hood on a new Mercedes today and all you see is a big plastic shield that's hiding the engine. Try to remove the shield, and your warranty is toast. That's a lot like a Mac.

Those of us who once had a lot of fun tweaking our own carburetors, timing, spark plugs, and so forth, must be a dying breed. At any rate, I'd much rather use a PC (WITH XP, NOT VISTA), just for that reason.

Not putting down anyone with a Mac, you understand. Just my take, from a lot of years of being interested in what's going on under the hood of whatever I'm driving. I don't want a bothersome OS shield between myself and my PC, because it's so much fun exercising the wide variety of hardware, software and connection options available.

I prefer hands-on only whenever I want to exercise that option, but not necessarily all the time. I certainly do understand those like LeePro who couldn't care less about what's going on under the hood, but just want the damn car to go from point A to point B without a hassle.

There's obviously plenty of room for both viewpoints, and no need to make a big deal of either one.

427 KrsnaDas  Sun, Nov 30, 2008 5:06:50am

Charles:

1. Switch to InnoDB
2. Get rid of FULLTEXT - use Sphinx - check out my post at [Link: capttofu.livejournal.com...]

Then you get row-level locking + a super fast search engine with _far_ more capability than FULLTEXT. Also, you don't have to ever stress again about MyISAM being corrupted and waiting for hours for huge tables to be repaired.

Also use : innodb_file_per_table

Feel free to ask me questions.

428 Charles Johnson  Sun, Nov 30, 2008 9:56:58am

Thanks, I will look into that. At this point, changing the comments table to InnoDB would probably take a couple of days, though.

Do you have a link to the Sphinx project?

429 johnkwon  Sun, Nov 30, 2008 10:37:22am

Made sense to me. Good call on the fix.

re: #428 Charles

Charles,

[Link: www.sphinxsearch.com...]

It's pretty easy to set up. I can answer any questions you have as well.

Also, updates to your table will be *way* faster getting rid of FT.

FT kind of sucks ;)
