NASA TV is streaming live video of the Space Shuttle’s landing at Edwards Air Force Base in California, returning from a successful mission to the International Space Station.

Backdropped against Earth’s horizon and the blackness of space, Endeavour’s Canadian-built robot arm appears amidst elements of the International Space Station. Endeavour had been docked for almost two weeks during the STS-126 mission at the orbital outpost when this image was taken.

UPDATE at 11/30/08 1:52:30 pm:

A picture perfect landing, and the crew is safely home on Earth.

It's kind of hard to imagine that the space shuttle is just one huge, technologically advanced glider, making it a bit more interesting in landing the thing. NASA has some great pilots (and programmers) to fly the thing.

I was running in and out all day just being a kid. I didn't see what the big deal was . Heck they had been flying in space my whole life. My grandma made me sit and watch the actual landing. You never realize how physically violent shuttle re-entry is until you watch the heat waves coming off the landed shuttle's tail fin.

Those "heat waves" are from the Auxiliary Power Units [APUs] which burn hydrazine to power the three hydraulic pumps which control the elevons, body flap, rudder/speed brake, landing gear, and brakes.

The three APU exhaust ports are on either side of the base of the vertical stabilizer. On a night landing, you can actually see flames coming out of the ceramic exhaust ports.

Carrying a .45 at the small of my back is fine as long as I'm standing. The problem with any kind of shoulder bag rig is that you put your purse down, and you may bet on that being the moment you actually need the weapon.

This isn't too uncomfortable, barring the weight, which is a problem no matter what I'm using. It's a .45. I'm a woman of 5 feet, three inches.

re: #221 Dianna

Carrying a .45 at the small of my back is fine as long as I'm standing. The problem with any kind of shoulder bag rig is that you put your purse down, and you may bet on that being the moment you actually need the weapon.

This isn't too uncomfortable, barring the weight, which is a problem no matter what I'm using. It's a .45. I'm a woman of 5 feet, three inches.

If it is a full weight .45, not an alloy frame, the weight is the problem. It might sound silly but a reversed, butt first, holster over the strong side hip works sitting or standing. I use a left handed belt slide holster (I am right handed) or I slide it into my belt, butt forward and it will stay there unless I have to walk a long distance. Just a thought.

Dianna, why'd you decide on the .45? If you don't mind me askin'.

I started with .45s when I was a kid (knocked myself on the forehead the first time I fired one, too). I've used a .38 revolver, but didn't like it much, probably because it was a "woman's gun", 5 shots, and much too light. I don't like 9 mm - the recoil's not straight, but twists, so it takes a fraction of a second longer to come back on target.

The .45, while it's heavy and loud and does have a recoil - less, of course, with my Kimber and its long barrel - is a straight recoil: my hand comes up, a bit, then I'm back on target and front-sighted again. If I use both hands, I don't actually lose the target at all.

Second, with a .45, at the very least, when you hit a target, it tends to go down and stay down.

Well, I'm having a new experience.

My male brought home a shoulder rig for me. I'm not adjusting to wearing it.

Currently, the .45 is unloaded, because I'm a safety fanatic, and I'm not carrying a loaded weapon around with me until I'm more confident about drawing and so on. But man, this thing is heavy!

A wonderful training class for carrying, with 14 hours (class and range time) which helped me learn some extremely important information for carrying.

It seems, imho, that anyone who carries and hasn't had this type of training should definitely take it.

It was offered at my local shooting range - drawing and firing from concealment was incredibly educational.

Wow, I didn't know that, I always assumed it was re-entry heat, thanks for the info.

re: #274 David IV of Georgia
from this site: [Link: www.aviationexplorer.com...]

"There are several factors that can influence sonic booms -- weight, size, and shape of the aircraft or vehicle, plus its altitude, attitude and flight path, and weather or atmospheric conditions.

A larger and heavier aircraft must displace more air and create more lift to sustain flight, compared with small, light aircraft. Therefore, they will create sonic booms stronger and louder than those of smaller, lighter aircraft. The larger and heavier the aircraft, the stronger the shock waves will be.

Altitude determines the distance shock waves travel before reaching the ground, and this has the most significant effect on intensity. As the shock cone gets wider, and it moves outward and downward, its strength is reduced. Generally, the higher the aircraft, the greater the distance the shock wave must travel, reducing the intensity of the sonic boom. Of all the factors influencing sonic booms, increasing altitude is the most effective method of reducing sonic boom intensity. "

My Male has the S&W 915; I don't much care for it, though I do like its capacity. The Berettas I've fired have all had nice action, though I thought their triggers were a bit stiff. I am, of course, a ranting, raving fan of the Kimber, so I'm probably not a reliable person on that score.

The advantage of a revolver is lack of jamming, of course. I've not cared for most that I've handled, though.

They talked back and forth a bit until one of the Air Force people remembered that they had an empty B-1 returning from a mission flying near the soldiers. They told the soldiers to get as low as they could and hold their ears. They flew the B-1 over the enemy transonic close to the ground. Deaf and dazed soldiers are much easier to fight. I understand they surrendered.

Nice.

Huh. My experience of 9's is recoil. Lots and lots of recoil.

I spent a good bit of time tuning a custom load for my 9mm (Beretta and Ruger) to have minimal recoil; standard 124 grain and 115 grain bullets tend to kick more so I use 147 grain with a ~70% max recommended charge behind it. Hardly feel any recoil with it now.

Doctors shocked at hostages's torture

"Bombay has a long history of terror. I have seen bodies of riot victims, gang war and previous terror attacks like bomb blasts. But this was entirely different. It was shocking and disturbing," a doctor said.

Asked what was different about the victims of the incident, another doctor said: "It was very strange. I have seen so many dead bodies in my life, and was yet traumatised. A bomb blast victim's body might have been torn apart and could be a very disturbing sight. But the bodies of the victims in this attack bore such signs about the kind of violence of urban warfare that I am still unable to put my thoughts to words," he said.

Asked specifically if he was talking of torture marks, he said: "It was apparent that most of the dead were tortured. What shocked me were the telltale signs showing clearly how the hostages were executed in cold blood," one doctor said.

The other doctor, who had also conducted the post-mortem of the victims, said: "Of all the bodies, the Israeli victims bore the maximum torture marks. It was clear that they were killed on the 26th itself. It was obvious that they were tied up and tortured before they were killed. It was so bad that I do not want to go over the details even in my head again," he said.

Anyone surprised?

'Our Culture Is Better'

Having his own party liberates Mr. Wilders to speak his mind. As he sees it, the West suffers from an excess of toleration for those who do not share its tradition of tolerance. "We believe that -- 'we' means the political elite -- that all cultures are equal," he says. "I believe this is the biggest disease today facing Europe. . . . We should wake up and tell ourselves: You're not a xenophobe, you're not a racist, you're not a crazy guy if you say, 'My culture is better than yours.' A culture based on Christianity, Judaism, humanism is better. Look at how we treat women, look at how we treat apostates, look at how we go with the separation of church and state. I can give you 500 examples why our culture is better."

Top THIS One For A Speeding Ticket

Two California Highway Patrol Officers were conducting speeding enforcement on I-15, just north of the Marine Corps Air Station at Miramar. One of the officers was using a hand held radar device to check speeding vehicles approaching the crest of a hill. The officers were suddenly surprised when the radar gun began reading 300 miles per hour. The officer attempted to reset the radar gun, but it would not reset and then turned off.

Just then a deafening roar over the treetops revealed that the radar had in fact locked on to a USMC F/A-18 Hornet which was engaged in a low flying exercise near the location.

Back at the CHP Headquarters the Patrol Captain fired off a complaint to the USMC Base Commander. The reply came back in true USMC style: Thank you for your letter. We can now complete the file on this incident.

You may be interested to know that the tactical computer in the Hornet had detected the presence of, and subsequently locked on to your hostile radar equipment and automatically sent a jamming signal back to it, which is why it shut down.

Furthermore, an Air-to-Ground missile aboard the fully armed aircraft had also automatically locked on to your equipment location. Fortunately, the Marine Pilot flying the Hornet recognized the situation for what it was, quickly responded to the missile system alert status and was able to override the automated defense system before the missile was launched to destroy the hostile radar position.

The pilot also suggests you cover your mouths when cussing at them, since the video systems on these jets are very high tech. Sergeant Johnson, the officer holding the radar gun, should get his dentist to check his left rear molar. It appears the filling is loose. Also, the snap is broken on his holster.

Sure enough. Behavior is firstly instilled into the child by it's parents in it's youth by the associates, friends and wider family. And all of the above derive their behavior from the culture, mentality and it's underlying morality-giving body that is the cultures/nations religion.

Sergeant Johnson, the officer holding the radar gun, should get his dentist to check his left rear molar. It appears the filling is loose. Also, the snap is broken on his holster.

Thank you for your concern. Semper Fi

I call BS on the HARM missile being armed, they don't do that sort of thing during training - i.e., having the missile ready to launch. They have the sets warmed up and listening/radiating, but nothing is ARMED.

As far as the video systems? Oh my, yes.

The Light Colonel was having very much fun with the troopers, obviously!

Stick it in their eye, Colonel! Heh.

(In'73 we had an LE (Law Enforcement) on Minot AFB that kept taking his radar gun back to the Comm Repair Shop - after the third trip they finally got it out of him what he was doing before the unit got fried... He was taking the speed of a landing B-52 because he was bored and wanted to see how fast it was going. Two things resulted from this, the LE's were told NEVER to point an operational radar at a military aircraft, and the flight crews were briefed to turn off their ECM before landing.)

Lizards, NEVER point a laser or radar at an operational military aircraft unless you have the IFF/SIF code of the day. If you don't know what I'm talking about, just DON'T, okay? You *may* live to regret it, you may not...

Well, as a sign of goodwill he could start getting rid of those training camps...-I4e

There are plenty of identified training camps. The Indians could mine them. It would get a few of the perps and send fear through the rest. Heck, with help from the US those camps could be mined from the air at night - which would provide a nice surprise for them.

Made me think of this "Oops.. I forgot to mention the recoil" YouTube video.

I fired one of those once. Once was enough. It left me with a stinging pain in both wrists that took an hour to go away.

re: #316 CynicalConservative

I spent a good bit of time tuning a custom load for my 9mm (Beretta and Ruger) to have minimal recoil; standard 124 grain and 115 grain bullets tend to kick more so I use 147 grain with a ~70% max recommended charge behind it. Hardly feel any recoil with it now.

I once made a batch of 9mm for my Browning Hi-Power with (IIRC) 2.5 gr of Bullseye and a Linotype metal bullet cast in a Lee mold intended to make 105 gr. bullets. The bullets came out at 101 gr. with the Linotype metal. The Browning was 100% reliable with this load and would drop the empties on the ground directly under the gun.
