RetweetObama Quietly Reinstates Another Fired Adviser

Politics | Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 9:09:03 am PST

Yet another adviser that Barack Obama tossed under the bus during his campaign has been quietly reinstated: Adviser Who Insulted Clinton Has Role in Transition.

Samantha Power, the Harvard professor who was forced to resign from Barack Obama’s presidential campaign last spring after calling Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton “a monster,” is now advising the president-elect on transition matters relating to the State Department — which Clinton is slated to head.

Power is listed on Obama’s transition Web site as part of the team reviewing national security agencies. Her duties, according to the site, will be to “ensure that senior appointees have the information necessary to complete the confirmation process, lead their departments, and begin implementing signature policy initiatives immediately after they are sworn in.”

In short, she is part of a team that is likely to work directly with Clinton, a potentially awkward situation for the two women. Obama is expected to officially announce Clinton as his choice for secretary of state after the Thanksgiving holiday.

As we pointed out last March, this isn’t the only weird and disturbing statement Power has made; in a 2002 interview in Berkeley, she actually advocated for the US to invade Israel, in order to protect the Palestinians from “genocide.”

Posted on that on the overnight thread.

The stated / implied rationale is "expertise" around nuke/bio attacks. But the reality is that such forces would be used to contain and control a contaminated population. The force levels spoken of, and their composition have little to do with running decon stations and much to do with the unpleasant task of separating family members and groups based on who has lethal exposure and who doesn't. The walking ones with a lethal are placed in pens to die. The others still have to be kept from the surrounding populations. Then there are issues about food and water (can't eat/drink the dirty stuff) that get really ugly. It appears that local officials won't be trusted to make decisions due to likely sympathies for the victims. That is what this is about.

I remember, a few Presidential campaigns ago, one candidate running on the plank that ... it's not his lack of experience, it's the experience of the people he'll select to fill offices that counts. Who was the candidate? I can't quite remember.

Now it's happened; a man with an embarrassingly thin resume, for anyone over 40, has been elected President. It looks like the seeds of the failure of his presidency are being sown by the people whackjobs that he chooses.

On the bright side, Hillary gets to learn how Cabinet Members behave when talking to one of thier boss' lackeys. Watch for her to develop a tongue-biting flinch. It looks like the shoe fits the other foot. Good fun.

WBAI has been a hard-left radio station for decades.

It's one of the five Pacifica network stations. They've been in financial trouble for a long time because, well, selling communism isn't the best business model. There are endless power struggles at WBAI, which play out over the internet and provide for some amusing reading.

It'll be interesting as hell to see how long it takes for him to get down there with Carter on his favorables poll. I give him six months, but only if he does something about the atrocious picks that he has nominated to cabinet positions so far. He can't pander quickly enough to keep up. One of these times he's going to fall flat on his ass. After that, he's toast.

I hope you're right, but I fear you're wrong. The Media (who too many people still pay attention to) will have BO's back throughout his administration.

MPACUK blames the Jews of Mumbai terrorism...
Terrorism Vs Terrorism: We Need Change, Not Apologies

The militants it seems targeted hotels with a large numbers of foreigners and, most telling, a Jewish group (to Muslim militants, that says Israel), often stopping to ask ‘are you American?’

This seems to point to the face that it was insurgents are fighting an ongoing foreign policy that terrorises Muslims with its own terrorism.
...
There is an undeniable fact that no government or right wing media want to tell you: Western (often Zionist lobby driven) foreign policy is the root cause of why these young men are taking up arms against what is a brutal and extreme foreign policy.
...
The outrage by the pro-Israel media does not make the Mumbai massacre any worse than the massacre in Kashmir and Gujarat. In fact statistically it pales by comparison.
...
Thus Muslim young men are taking up terrorism in the face of state terrorism. It’s terrorism to fight terrorism; an evil reaction to an even more evil action.
...
Of course young Muslim men have been given no other option or route to bring about the freedom of their people.

I did military planning as an army officer during the cold war, so I got to know the decon sops pretty well. I will see what kind of FMs (field manuals) that might be public on it that I can link to.

But if you run scenarios through your head without giving way to emotion, you quickly realize that such a process is inevitable.

My problem is that the US Army should not do it, nor any other military. Aside from the aspects of who should run things in this country, think about the soldiers. Many will refuse to pull the duty when it comes down to it. When Gorbachev was deposed briefly at the end of the Soviet Union, one reason the coup failed was the unwillingness of Russians to shoot Russians. Thing was, the Russians were unable to have any other Soviet ethnicity garrisoned near Moscow for fear of an ethnic coup.

OT - The latest on Plaxico from CNN/SI:

Plaxico Burress arrived at a police station early Monday, where he was expected to be charged after accidentally shooting himself in the right thigh at a Manhattan nightclub.

The New York Giants star wide receiver arrived in a black Cadillac Escalade wearing jeans and a black coat. Burress, who was not visibly limping, did not speak to the media.

Burress plans to plead not guilty to a weapon possession charge during a Monday afternoon court appearance, his lawyer, Benjamin Brafman, said outside the police station. Conviction on the charge could result in at least 31/2 years in prison.

"He is standing tall. [Read: He is lying his ass off.] He is a mature adult," said Brafman. [Read: Not taking responsibility for your actions is the grown-up thing to do.] "I think any professional athlete in this situation would be concerned." [Read: But not as concerned as an ordinary citizen without a mob lawyer would have to be.]

Note: I am in favor of gun rights, but the law is the law. In New York you can't carry a concealed weapon without a permit.

This man will get off because he's a so-called superstar, just like sticky-fingered Hollywood starlets like Winona Ryder get off with a slap on the wrist because they're "special people".

I am so sick of the double standards in our legal system. Someone once put the situation this way: "If money can't buy justice, what is it good for?" In other words, big bucks and a big name get you off the hook.

Justice indeed.

Do you have a link to back up that assertion? That sort of thing would get very ugly very quickly.

Here you go - FM 3-11.

It is quite general and much has to do with decontamination of personnel while engaged in combat operations, where evacuation is important because you don't want the decon station / medical facility in the way of an operation. The FM discusses Homeland Security operations including coordination with civilian authorities (and it is quite careful to point out that the civilians are in charge, but that decon stations and contaminated areas fall under control of unit commanders until relieved).

Anyways - dry reading with lots of acronyms, but the table of contents will walk you to the relevant parts.

It doesn't lay out specific scenarios for domestic response - "National Response Plans" don't get published.

On the one hand, I don't see the economy improving that quickly under Obama's anti-growth strategies. That said, you could be right. It depends on how bad they F-up foreign policy.

Actually oil prices may be the one bright spot of the BO presidency since an economy in recession uses less oil and hence there will be decreased demand and lower prices.

Until OPEC closes down on the spigot...

Mumbai attacks - city fears five terrorists are 'missing'

As the city slowly moved towards normality, Indian security forces claimed that just ten militants – nine of whom were killed and one caught alive – were behind the series of co-ordinated attacks that claimed nearly 200 lives. Rakesh Maria, joint commissioner of police, crime branch, said: "Their plan was just to cause maximum damage and return with hostages protecting themselves."

However, a hijacked Indian fishing boat used by the gunmen had equipment for 15 men on board when it was discovered adrift off the city shore – suggesting that several gunmen could still be at large.

Also:

Muslim graveyard refuses to bury terrorists in Mumbai

A Muslim graveyard in the heart of Mumbai has broken with Islamic tradition and refused to bury the bodies of nine terrorists who were killed during the attack on India's financial capital.

The influential Muslim Jama Masjid Trust, which runs the 7.5-acre Badakabrastan graveyard, said it would not bury the gunmen because they were not true followers of Islam.

Hanif Nalkhande, a spokesman for the trust, said: "People who committed this heinous crime cannot be called Muslim. Islam does not permit this sort of barbaric crime."
...
Unclaimed bodies thought to be Muslim are traditionally given to the nearest Islamic graveyard for burial after three days but that now looks impossible in Mumbai.

There are seven other Muslim graveyards in Mumbai, but the Jama Masjid's influence means none of the others are likely to accept the bodies.

He could do that, just as he could try to pack the Court al la FDR. I don't believe that he would be able to succeed in doing so. At this particular juncture there is too much disagreement between the Parties. Neither side really trusts the Government much. The only way I see him getting around posse comitatus is if there is another big, nasty terrorist attack, like, we get nuked, or someone releases some smallpox.

While we're all still pissed about 9-11, most of the Country has forgotten what happened, or why it is important that we fight. Who was it who said there was no terrorist threat? Harry Reid? Dick Durbin (D- al Qaeda)? It was one of the top Democrats, but I don't remember the exact one who said it.

Yes but it's extremely rare for a Secretary of State to be a person of Hillary's status - particularly in the Democratic party - please don't forget that she beat Obama in all the major electoral states (except, of course, for Illinois and Michigan where Obama wasn't even on the ballot) and actually squeeked out a win over Obama in the Dem popular vote). If nothing else, the last 8 years should have educated us that the bureaucracy at Foggy Bottom operates at its own pace and own direction when it prefers to even if such direction undermines or works against the Administration or SecState. It is entirely possible that Power will be the real force of policy while Clinton is the public face for Foggy Bottom regardless of the promises made to Clinton regarding access and decision making authority. I wonder if Hillary knew about Power being appointed. (Combined with Susan Rice being named as UN Ambassador - the Messiah's Foreign Policy team is pretty much looking like a real disaster in the making.)

Also, Hillary isn't entirely trustworthy when it comes to policies respecting the rights of Israel to exist either. She, and her husband, have no problem embracing (literally) the terrorists or strong arming the Israelis.

Why is Congress allowed to continue making the same mistakes over and over again?

1. No one talks about or exposes their pathetic approval ratings...and besides, according to the polls, it's everyone else's representatives who are the problems - not their representative. So the locals keep sending the same faces back there.
2. Leadership is corrupt and inept - with major failings on both sides of the aisle.
3. No one is held accountable or responsible.

You forgot the /sarc tag - I hope.
What worries me is that Power and Jones might actually have The O to go over Congress' head and get US or NATO troops to invade Israel, or at least to put some kind of international force in place to prevent Israel from carrying out measures to protect its citizens from Palithug attack.

I am also convinced that the "new order of things" will have the US missle detection system now in place in the Negev and manned only by US troops used to spy on Israel's military and prevent it from taking offensive, or even defensive, action - or worse - to tip off Israel's enemies.

Clinton will act as a nice fig leaf for the anti-Israel actions of Jones, Power, Gates. Malley and, of course, Obama. Remember how she hugged Suha Arafat and didn't utter even a word of protest after Suha made egregious accusations against Israel about depleted uranium or poisoning the wells or some other morsel of Nazi/Islamist/fascist antisemitic propaganda.
