OK. Mondays are usually ok but TODAY is totally lame. Just dealing with utility companies. They have a complete monopoly. You can't threaten them with the old "I'll take my business elsewhere" routine. I moved to a new location 3 months ago and they still have not disconnected the utilities at my previous location.
Will she have any problem getting confirmed, seeing as last time she was in court regarding campaing funding, she couldn't remember much and many of the contributors left the country or pled the 5th?

Monday's declaration by the panel of the National Bureau of Economic Research confirms what many private economists, lawmakers and members of the general public already have assumed and puts an official date on it: A U.S. recession began in December 2007.
That was the same month employment peaked, and the economy began shrinking in a downturn that has been exacerbated by the financial crisis that took hold of markets beginning in September.
Perhaps I'm mistaken, and didn't get the memo on the new definition of recession, but I thought that a recession was when the GDP growth was negative two successive quarters. Now, while the GDP did grow at a substantially slower rate, starting the last quarter of 2007, I do not recall any of the quarters showing a negative growth - the closest was a .3% uptick.
Is this just another case of redefining a term to fit a political agenda - similar to calling a plan to not grow an entitlement at 8% annually but grow only 4% annually a cut in the entitlement?

The water bill is for Nov. - Feb. They pre-bill. The electric was only like $10 but they should have disconnected two months ago and they are trying to screw me with the deposit. I canceled the alarm monitoring at the end of Sept. written and verbal and they keep sending me bills. The phone company is trying to bill me for a line that was disconnected 3 months ago. I wonder how many larger businesses just pay these bills without asking. Happens a lot I am sure.

Happened to me when we moved. We got two months of power bills from the old residence even though we cancelled it three separate times. And don't even get me started with Comcast.

Yes. I agree Lars is not the best technically, but he was fun to watch. And I like the bass work he does. Neil is by far the best in my opinion, technically. Occasionally I will listen to the jazz station and some of the older music has some unbelievable drum and horn solos. I like it all.

Been going over this for the last day on Belmont threads, my take is to agree with the idea that India moves two Divisions and a support Brigade into the Jalalabad region, totaling about 35-40,000 men. Then make it perfectly clear that if Pakistan does not flood the tribal areas and garauntee the supply lines through the Khyber it means the existential elimination of Pakistan. Taliban are cut off and implode and the US can withdraw from what would have been a trap. Pakistan even gets a chance to reform and remain in the community of nations.

I mentioned the other day that since the Church will not allow full activity in the church (volunteer callings, temple attendance) for those who are actively practicing homosexuals there can be bad blood between Mormons and their homosexual children/family members. For the most part the Church avoids partisan political activity but the leaders felt strongly about this issue.
In the intermountain west people tend to think the LDS Church can do no wrong or is the source of all evil and those two extreme opinions are often in the same immediate family.
The whole combination of the Church acting politically (in a way it usually does not) and the issue of homosexuality and the church (which is a hot button in the first place) are probably behind the incidents. I would not be surprised of the protesters are close relatives or former members of the church.
That being said they are free to protest and disagree. I just hope they keep it peaceful and legal.

No moonbat relatives at the Casa de Quickredfox, just the foxcubs, who remain resolutely unmoonbattish despite attendance at educational institutions such as UC Berkeley and UC San Diego. Other immediate but more farflung relatives are more along the bitterclinger lines, although it probably wouldn't be too hard to find moonbats among the cousins.

This is rich, and it goes back to what we were discussing earlier about genocide and the choice of Susan Rice; the cries of genocide ignored.

I think that's a very poorly thought out idea, although bolstering the training and tactics of local law enforcement should be a priority - especially in light of the Mumbai attacks and the failure of the Mumbai police to contain the situation in the early stages. Still, local law enforcement is quite better here in the US than in Mumbai, where most major cities have SWAT/ESU teams capable of responding to terror attacks like what we saw.
The Pentagon plan would seriously augment that with National Guard deployments and active duty stationing.
If the additional security is in the form of additional Nat'l Guard, under state control, that avoids the posse comitatus problems, and that should be a consideration. Of course, training for Nat'l Guard and active duty should be focusing on killing terrorists and bad guys outside the US, rather than the law enforcement goal of dealing with the terrorists once they've entered the US.

I think the term 'liberal values' is even misleading. It implies that there is such a value set. In a vague way, I suppose there is, but in my experience, rules (value sets) only apply to non-liberals. That way liberals cannot be thought to be immoral or hypocrites...they just create nuanced arguments to justify whatever perversion or behavior they wish not to be condemned for regardless of its effect on others in society.

Replacing the ropes is a bitch, but, new windows would change the look of the house too much. It drives hubby bats. I do my clothes shopping online, as much as possible, L.L. Bean loves me. I make hubby do any store shopping that has to be done, but, if I must, I have to know which store, which aisle and which shelf the object is on before I go. 2 minutes, inside, max. Should have been a jewel thief.

All of the situations I have thought of to fit their concrete value system have been perfectly labeled in positive/good/acceptable terms like "rights" but in practice are not as non-threatening.
Their value systems uses positive terms to distort negative concepts. For example "forgiveness" to put the emphasis of Justice on the criminal (and their past) instead of the victim. It is forgiveness for the criminal over justice for the victim. (not the best example I could have given, but I think I make my point). The same scenario can be used for the Liberal perverted value of "non-Judgment". (who are we to judge the murderers, rapists, etc.)

I understand and largely agree on this. Except that the forgiveness to which you refer only applies to people who the left can make use of to further its agenda...never to a Richard Nixon or a Ramos or Campean (sp?). If you have 10 kids, you need an Australian Cattle Dog. They are the smartest breed, and are great babysitters. They will keep small kids in the yard, by herding them away from the road, just do not attempt to discipline a child in their presence, they will pull you by the pant leg away from the kid. They are amazingly simple to train, and never need a leash. They will not leave your side, hence the nickname "Velcro dog". I have a 9 year old female, and she is the best. I cannot recommend an ACD enough, to everyone.

I have the Verizon vx6800 = HTC Mogul phone. I love it and access LGF with it, except that the comments don't quite work like they do on a full browser.
And Arnie just declared a financial emergency (more of a publicity stunt in this case IMO) here in CA... Since the GOP in the state assembly are holding fast to no tax increases, the only option are budget cuts. This is going to get ugly, because CA has to cut billions of dollars from the annual budget, and nobody wants to budge. Sometime in Feb CA will begin to write checks that bounce, if something isn't done.

It also doesn't work with a stylus. The touchpad needs to feel your finger, for some reason (heat? moisture?).
That's strange...I don't have an iPhone, but I do have a Samsung Instinct with a touch screen. It will respond to a touch from just about anything (Pen, finger, stylus, pointy thingies)

No. The read hardware (off the imager) determines how many frames/sec can be acquired. Also, issues exist wrt electronic "shutters".

The newest Crackberry dispensed with buttons and keyboard, though. Everything is virtual. It clicks when you press a "button," however, as if it had a keyboard.

That was pretty much the case until around the early 60's then the Fed's wised-up. Today you need what amounts to almost entirely different uppers & in most cases a number of changes to the lowers(and I don't mean teeth). The designs, even in such small things as the ammunition ramping, are different(the bastids).
That's not to say some smithies(experts) couldn't achieve the desired result but it would depend entirely on the make, model & year the weapon was manufactured.

No it was not. The Lost in Space robot was not Robbie, from Forbidden Planet.
Robbie did appear in a number of Lost in Space episodes, much as it had in a number of other movies and even an episode of Twilight Zone.
It cost Paramount 50,000 dollars to build that prop in 1956 for the movie Forbidden Planet and they managed to get there monies worth out of it.
The Robot: The Robot is a Model B-9, Class M-3 General Utility Non-Theorizing Environmental Control Robot, which had no given name (Harris once jokingly suggested the robot be named "Clawed"). Although a machine endowed with superhuman strength and futuristic weaponry, he often displayed human characteristics such as laughter (usually at Smith, thus provoking the latter's rage), sadness, and mockery. The Robot was designed by Robert Kinoshita (whose other cybernetic claim to fame is as the designer of Forbidden Planet's Robby the Robot) and was performed by Bob May in a prop costume built by Bob Stewart. The voice was dubbed by Dick Tufeld, who was also the series' narrator.

As background I spent the last 15 years of my life working in an investment firm. I was at a loss to understand why oil was ever trading above 60 except for the commodity funds playing games and the institutions doing "alternative asset classes". This will kill a lot of deep water drilling projects. They will complete the ones they have started, but not do any more. Its not profitable to lift oil from those for less than around 75-80 bucks a bbl when you add in the drilling costs. Of course if those are sunk costs, you might as well finish and perhaps cap the well till the price comes back.

It's true. I know the reference came from Wiki, but there are so many die hard fans of the movie, that the Wiki entry is probably as accurate as any source.
The movie itself was budgeted at 2 million, the most ever spent on a sci-fi movie up to that time.

It wasn't just the "suit," I imagine it may also have been the price of building the technology to build the thing, or all the man-hours to make all the molds and stuff and to assemble the thing together. At union wages. And maybe having to throw out parts that didn't quite work as expected, say, if the rubberized parts for the legs and arms came out to stiff and had to be reformulated. Remember, this sort of thing had never been done before. Most of the robots in sci-fi movies before this were just Tin Man-style sheet-metal suits of armor.

What do you think union wages were back in 1956? Not much; back then, $5000 was still a decent annual salary. Hell, back in the mid-late '70s--i.e., 20 years later--the starting annual salary for a law associate at a good firm was only $15,000; today it has increased by a factor of 10. In 1956, $125,000 was practically independent wealth.
Just ticking off a list of everything I could think of that might have driven up the price of this thing. Actually, one thing I have heard, though, is that, at a place that designs new plastic household items like trashcans and tape dispensers, that it can be VERY expensive to make, say, a prototype garbage can... That one can could cost tens of thousands, largely because it's a one-off. Or, to be more technical, it is the cost of the industrial MOLDS they made to produce that can. They're trying to get the design right, by trial and error, and by making and striking mold after mold until the design of that waste-paper-basket finally comes out right. I imagine something similar may have happened with Robby: There were ALOT of specialized shapes in that thing. Now, that doesn't necessarily mean they made industrial-class molds for all those Robby body parts, but I bet it wasn't peanuts to build all those special molds, either.
Besides, Hollywood unions have an annoying tendency of coming up with cockamamy reasons to garner more money out of TV and movie production. I heard recently that in the original Star Trek, Roddenberry had intended for every screen around the Enterprise bridge set to have rear-projected motion-picture screens, so there'd always be moving images on all of them. Then he discovered that the union rules were that every double-damned screen had to have a separate projector-operator on staff to run it, each one at union wages! That is why the bridge instead sported still images on all those screens! There are probably all sorts of other cases like that out there.

Well, whatever the story, there seems to have been SOME reason or other that this thing cost such a gawdawful amount to make. Anyone know of a book or article somewhere that details what went into the making of this movie, and of the sets, props, vehicles (like that car Robby slotted into), and stuff? Maybe that might illuminate what it was that drove the price so sky high...

This did not prove to be an amusing act and Franks mood hardened. - It was, however, an evening of excellent, serious musicianship around the release of 'Shut up and play your guitar'
