On Vlaams Belang

So where do the anti-Semitic, neo-Nazi charges comes from? Let’s start by acknowledging that Dutch is a Germanic language, and, in our age and culture, any Germanic-accented politicians decribed as “right-wing” may trigger an almost atavistic prejudice--although when these same right-wing, Germanic-style-accented politicians were born around the 1960s (or later) we need to think a little deeper.

Howdy bella. How are things?

OK. Mondays are usually ok but TODAY is totally lame. Just dealing with utility companies. They have a complete monopoly. You can't threaten them with the old "I'll take my business elsewhere" routine. I moved to a new location 3 months ago and they still have not disconnected the utilities at my previous location.

60 Athos  Mon, Dec 1, 2008 11:25:45am

Hmmm.....

It's Official - US in a Recession

Monday's declaration by the panel of the National Bureau of Economic Research confirms what many private economists, lawmakers and members of the general public already have assumed and puts an official date on it: A U.S. recession began in December 2007.

That was the same month employment peaked, and the economy began shrinking in a downturn that has been exacerbated by the financial crisis that took hold of markets beginning in September.

Perhaps I'm mistaken, and didn't get the memo on the new definition of recession, but I thought that a recession was when the GDP growth was negative two successive quarters. Now, while the GDP did grow at a substantially slower rate, starting the last quarter of 2007, I do not recall any of the quarters showing a negative growth - the closest was a .3% uptick.

Is this just another case of redefining a term to fit a political agenda - similar to calling a plan to not grow an entitlement at 8% annually but grow only 4% annually a cut in the entitlement?

I found these paragraphs very interesting. They give you a bit of insight into how the Arab countries see both Hamas and Fatah (ie: only as Palestinian Authority). Guess that whole playing them against each other thing the West and Israel are doing aint working so well.

In a sign of a widening rift with regional Arab countries, Egypt's Foreign Ministry said the ban damaged "the reputation of (the) Islamic movement."

Saudi Arabia also expressed its displeasure in indirect but rare criticism.
The Saudi news agency quoted an unnamed foreign ministry official who said he was "shocked that a member of the Palestinian parliament," — referring to Hamas — "said that Saudi Arabia did not give visas to Gaza pilgrims."

Obama pick for UN ambassador known for tough stance on genocide

To reinforce his intention to work more closely with the United Nations after the tensions of President George W. Bush's tenure, Obama plans to restore the ambassador's post to cabinet rank, as it was under President Bill Clinton, according to Democrats close to the transition.

While the cabinet consists of 15 department heads, a president can give other positions the same rank for the duration of his administration.

"She's obviously one of Obama's closest advisers, so it underscores how much of a priority he's making the position," said Nancy Soderberg, a senior U.S. diplomat at the United Nations under Bill Clinton. "If you look at the last eight years, we obviously need to be more engaged at the UN and realistic about what the UN can do."

The water bill is for Nov. - Feb. They pre-bill. The electric was only like $10 but they should have disconnected two months ago and they are trying to screw me with the deposit. I canceled the alarm monitoring at the end of Sept. written and verbal and they keep sending me bills. The phone company is trying to bill me for a line that was disconnected 3 months ago. I wonder how many larger businesses just pay these bills without asking. Happens a lot I am sure.

Chanukkah is nearly an entire week or so before the 25th this year.

I wonder if they came practically a full month apart (ie: Chanukkah in the beginning of December) if we would still be forced to say "happy holidays" instead of Happy Chanukkah in the beginning of the month, and Marry Xmas at the end.

The Moslems have a lunar calendar like Jews do except that, unlike the Jewish calendar, the calculations and adjustments weren't put in place so that holidays fall out at the same time each year so all Islamic holidays "travel" around the year falling out variously in summer, spring, winter or fall. So its not your imagination. The Haj, like any other observance, comes out at a different time each year.

Pakistan drops the other shoe...

US, India face Pak blackmail on terror

WASHINGTON: The United States and India face tactics bordering on blackmail from a militarized Pakistan - where civilian control is still very dodgy - as they coordinate efforts to eliminate terrorism in the region, according to analysts and officials on both sides.

In what is turning out to be an elaborate chess game in the region, Islamabad on Saturday made its "Afghan move" to counter the US-India pincer, telling Washington that it will have to withdraw some 100,000 Pakistani troops posted on its western borders to fight the al-Qaida-Taliban and move them east to the Indian front if New Delhi makes any aggressive moves.

It was all just waiting to happen. The Pakistani population, by and large, hates India, and wildly, fanatically supports Al Qaeda. Pakistan drops the other shoe...

US, India face Pak blackmail on terror

Been going over this for the last day on Belmont threads, my take is to agree with the idea that India moves two Divisions and a support Brigade into the Jalalabad region, totaling about 35-40,000 men. Then make it perfectly clear that if Pakistan does not flood the tribal areas and garauntee the supply lines through the Khyber it means the existential elimination of Pakistan. Taliban are cut off and implode and the US can withdraw from what would have been a trap. Pakistan even gets a chance to reform and remain in the community of nations.

The low end knives cost upwards of $300, and their high dollar knives are (no shit) over $2000. I will submit to you that there is no folding knife, switchblade or manual, that is worth $2000.

I'm not going to pay even $300 for a knife that I can't carry (it is a felony crime to carry switchblades and double edged knives in Tennessee, and these knives are both). Wow.

I might. IIRC, Muslims don't follow the Christian calendar.

The Taliban will be encouraged to launch an offensive in Afghanistan to put pressure on the Americans, who in turn will be expected to pressure the Indians to back off. Meanwhile, the Army will stage a coup on the elected Pak gov't and the country goes further down the sh*t-hole. And if a shooting war starts between India & Pak, then things get really ugly.

According to West, the only reason VB has a fascist reputation is because some of the long-ago founding members were Nazi collaborators --and hey, everybody was a Nazi collaborator back then!

Obviously, there's so much more to it than that, but she just glosses right over everything else and labels it "deranged." Another pathetic attempt to pull the wool over people's eyes.

Interesting that she uses that line of "reasoning" which many post-modernists used to defend Paul de Mann after it was learned that he edited a Nazi sympathetic publication in occupied Belgium and then went on to become a prominent intellectual who would call out others for their inadvertent racism. His defenders would cite post-modern linguistics theory in his defense, essentially saying we are all wrapped in contradiction. Such serves as a theoretical platform for multi-culturalism.

Nice to see the Eurofascist community drawing on post-modernist rationale to justify themselves. Tidy little irony there.

I like switchblade knives. I've got, I don't know, five or six of them. I doubt I've got $300 in all of them combined. IIRC I paid about $75 for the nicest one. It's a Smith and Wesson, technically not legal for civillians to buy. When I bought it, the dealer sold it to a cop, who then sold it to me, so technically speaking, nobody broke the letter of the law.

I still can't carry it. If I'm going to risk getting charged with a felony, I'll just carry a gun and be done with it.

That's probably because many black churches are in neighborhoods the activists would tremble to visit in broad daylight, and because a demonstration which approached the rudeness of those visited on the Mormons would be followed by a beat-down of epic proportions.

Mormon (LDS) temple workers handed out umbrellas to Protestors in manhattan. The same protestors calling those temple workers hateful names.

Let 'em burn the Book of Mormon. We are really good at printing and distribution. We don't worship the book we worship the Jesus who it talks about.

I mentioned the other day that since the Church will not allow full activity in the church (volunteer callings, temple attendance) for those who are actively practicing homosexuals there can be bad blood between Mormons and their homosexual children/family members. For the most part the Church avoids partisan political activity but the leaders felt strongly about this issue.

In the intermountain west people tend to think the LDS Church can do no wrong or is the source of all evil and those two extreme opinions are often in the same immediate family.

The whole combination of the Church acting politically (in a way it usually does not) and the issue of homosexuality and the church (which is a hot button in the first place) are probably behind the incidents. I would not be surprised of the protesters are close relatives or former members of the church.

That being said they are free to protest and disagree. I just hope they keep it peaceful and legal.

Reloading is one of the issues I have with them. I find them to be uncomfortable.

Bushmaster used to make a bullpup that just plain sucked, and so did Valmet. I've heard nothing but bad about the one Britain is using. An AUG is the best of the lot, but it still wouldn't be my first choice as a rifle. Another problem with an AUG is that if the integral scope gets damaged, you are hosed. The new Microtech guns have a variant with a rail down the top instead of the permanently fixed optic that the Steyr comes with, which is some better. You could probably use some of the after-market iron sites like an M-4 uses on it. They also have a forward assist like on an AR, but if you have to use it you are pretty well screwed.

If I were buying a weapon primarily as an investment, I'd try to snap one of them up, but I can't say that I'd make it my number one goto gun. ARs have so much better ergonomics, and AKs are so much more indestructible.

Any lizards want to report on Thanksgiving day festivities with Moonbat relatives?

No moonbat relatives at the Casa de Quickredfox, just the foxcubs, who remain resolutely unmoonbattish despite attendance at educational institutions such as UC Berkeley and UC San Diego. Other immediate but more farflung relatives are more along the bitterclinger lines, although it probably wouldn't be too hard to find moonbats among the cousins.

I do have some good moonbat friends, but as they are in fact good friends and put that above being moonbats, they respect my contrary views (or at least know where not to go with me).

It opens with a couple of skaters filmed by a friend. You hear a screech and honking and it pans over to a stop sign where a little old lady (with a big purse) seems to have dozed off crossing the street. The young shmuck in the Mercedes is gunning the engine and honking while the lady wakes with a start and begins to amble across the street. As she passes his car, she gives it a whack with her purse and the airbag goes off. It is truly priceless. You can hear the skater guys laughing their asses off at the whole scene.

I couldn't see it. I remember seeing some video somewhere of a church lady beatin' the crap out of somebody with her Bible, though.

A preacher always carried a 22 caliber bullet in his suit coat over his heart. An angry church lady got so carried away one Sunday that she threw her Bible at him and him right in the chest. If it hadn't been for that bullet, the Bible would have gone right through his heart. old one, i know.

This is rich, and it goes back to what we were discussing earlier about genocide and the choice of Susan Rice; the cries of genocide ignored.

I can tell you one place where the cries weren't ignored - albeit the response was delayed because of the need to go through the UN.

Iraq.

Saddam paid for his genocide of the Marsh Arabs, the Kurds, and Shiites who opposed his thuggish and iron fisted rule. Contrary to what President Bush is saying (or reported to have said in his GMA interview), there's nothing to be ashamed of in going and getting rid of Saddam. Everyone thought that Iraq had WMD (and they were used in the course of Saddam's genocide). That it turned out not to be the case was a situation that we could not tolerate in the aftermath of 9/11. We could not live with the uncertainty surrounding his weapons program, not with the evidence of his ties to worldwide terror groups and sponsorship of terrorism.

So, now we're hearing about how there's going to be a renewed focus on thwarting genocide. How long will it be before someone steps forward to stop the genocide in Sudan? Congo? Or emerging threats in Africa, the Middle East, or South Asia? Talking about stopping genocide, and putting down the regime that sponsors and carries out genocide are two different things.

President Bush ended a genocidal regime. And for that, I give him tremendous credit.

What gets me is that if you distill their argument, they are pretty much saying: "Get over your values, and come up with my opinion". Whey they ask a religious to "get over it" (ex: when discussing social conservatism, or the dreaded abortion) they are suggesting that they instead form an opinion devoid of their actual values.

I'd like a secularist to "get over their" secular values before coming up with their opinion on something. My point being of course, that it is impossible.

re: #665 96RoadKing

I think that's a very poorly thought out idea, although bolstering the training and tactics of local law enforcement should be a priority - especially in light of the Mumbai attacks and the failure of the Mumbai police to contain the situation in the early stages. Still, local law enforcement is quite better here in the US than in Mumbai, where most major cities have SWAT/ESU teams capable of responding to terror attacks like what we saw.

The Pentagon plan would seriously augment that with National Guard deployments and active duty stationing.

If the additional security is in the form of additional Nat'l Guard, under state control, that avoids the posse comitatus problems, and that should be a consideration. Of course, training for Nat'l Guard and active duty should be focusing on killing terrorists and bad guys outside the US, rather than the law enforcement goal of dealing with the terrorists once they've entered the US.

re: #687 WrathofG-d

Exactly the point I was trying to make. In a way it seems like a covert way of making religious values illegal (for lack of a better term) in society. Thus leaving only one option (the immoral secular Liberal point of view). Interesting how it seems that all but Liberal values have been made "off limits" to governance.

I think the term 'liberal values' is even misleading. It implies that there is such a value set. In a vague way, I suppose there is, but in my experience, rules (value sets) only apply to non-liberals. That way liberals cannot be thought to be immoral or hypocrites.....they just create nuanced arguments to justify whatever perversion or behavior they wish not to be condemned for regardless of its effect on others in society.

Liberal values are actually very much concrete. They can be seen in illogical "equality", misused "non-Judgment", etc.

All of the situations I have thought of to fit their concrete value system have been perfectly labeled in positive/good/acceptable terms like "rights" but in practice are not as non-threatening.

Their value systems uses positive terms to distort negative concepts. For example "forgiveness" to put the emphasis of Justice on the criminal (and their past) instead of the victim. It is forgiveness for the criminal over justice for the victim. (not the best example I could have given, but I think I make my point). The same scenario can be used for the Liberal perverted value of "non-Judgment". (who are we to judge the murderers, rapists, etc.)

Where a religious person would advocate/need Justice, the Liberal advocates/needs "forgiveness", or "understanding".

I understand and largely agree on this. Except that the forgiveness to which you refer only applies to people who the left can make use of to further its agenda......never to a Richard Nixon or a Ramos or Campean (sp?). The 'forgiveness' rule is applied selectively based on the agenda....not based on forgiveness as a generally applied principle.

Pentagon plans to deploy troops in US by 2012
Don't really have a problem with this, Posse Comitatus Act notwithstanding. 130 yr. old federal law which may need to be revisited.

Military preparations for a domestic weapon-of-mass-destruction attack have been underway since at least 1996, when the Marine Corps activated a 350-member chemical and biological incident response force and later based it in Indian Head, Md., a Washington suburb. Such efforts accelerated after the Sept. 11 attacks, and at the time Iraq was invaded in 2003, a Pentagon joint task force drew on 3,000 civil support personnel across the United States.

Birmingham Mayor Arrested on Federal Charges

The mayor of Alabama's largest city, a player in a multibillion dollar sewer bond deal that drove the surrounding county to the brink of bankruptcy, was arrested on Monday on federal criminal charges, an FBI spokesman said.

He was accused in a Securities and Exchange Commission lawsuit of taking more than $156,000 from a friend whose firm made millions on risky bond transactions with the county for a new sewer system.

Langford has said the investigation was politically motivated. He contends Martin, who was appointed by President Bush, has targeted Democrats.

Blame Bush, who would guessed....how convenient.

If you have 10 kids, you need an Australian Cattle Dog. They are the smartest breed, and are great babysitters. They will keep small kids in the yard, by herding them away from the road, just do not attempt to discipline a child in their presence, they will pull you by the pant leg away from the kid. They are amazingly simple to train, and never need a leash. They will not leave your side, hence the nickname "Velcro dog". I have a 9 year old female, and she is the best. I cannot recommend an ACD enough, to everyone.

Since the GOP in the state assembly are holding fast to no tax increases, the only option are budget cuts. It also doesn't work with a stylus. The touchpad needs to feel your finger, for some reason (heat? moisture?).

That's strange.....I don't have an iPhone, but I do have a Samsung Instinct with a touch screen. It will respond to a touch from just about anything (Pen, finger, stylus, pointy thingies)

What isn't Bush's fault? Receding hairline claims increased in the last eight years. Must be Bush's fault too.

A lens is a lens is a lens. If the iPhone doesn't have video, its all software. Any device that can take still pictures can take video, it just needs the processing software to capture it.

No. The read hardware (off the imager) determines how many frames/sec can be acquired. Also, issues exist wrt electronic "shutters".

That handsome boy is Finnbar. Saved by me from the name Parker, which is what my daughter envisioned for a name when she bought the pup for us. I just laughed at her and told her he needed a real man's name.

Maybe, but Blue is good stuff. Also sentimental to me. By deceased best friend used to bring it on hikes when we climbed the Presidentials in New Hampshire. It is really the only time I ever drink anything. Great way to relax after climbing 4 miles of trail at a 12-14% grade.

(woosh) over head.

Most semiauto firearms can be converted to full auto by filing the sear off. (Quite illegal, without a Class III license, so don't you kids try this at home.)

So, a gun nut metaphor for what you described re: still vs. video.

L.A. Times' Opinion Writer Blames India For the Terrorist Attacks

"Indeed, the government report I read about in the newspapers two years ago acknowledged that Muslims in India had become "backward." "Fearing for their security," the report said, "Muslims are increasingly resorting to living in ghettos around the country." Branding of Muslims as anti-national, terrorists and agents of Pakistan "has a depressing effect on their psyche," the report said, noting Muslims live in "a sense of despair and suspicion."

According to the report, produced by a committee led by a former Indian chief justice, Rajender Sachar, Muslims were now worse off than the Dalit caste, or those called untouchables. Some 52% of Muslim men were unemployed, compared with 47% of Dalit men. Among Muslim women, 91% were unemployed, compared with 77% of Dalit women. Almost half of Muslims over the age of 46 couldn't read or write. While making up 11% of the population, Muslims accounted for 40% of India's prison population. Meanwhile, they held less than 5% of government jobs."

So the willingly withdraw into an insular backwards lifestyle, they do nothing to argue against terrorists, usually praising any attack that doesnt effect them personally, yet its India's fault they didn't reach out enough to them?

Fuck em.

The newest Crackberry dispensed with buttons and keyboard, though. Everything is virtual. It clicks when you press a "button," however, as if it had a keyboard.

I hear it has some interface issues, though, and people are recommending to wait for the second-generation version of it.
