So, am I the only one who keeps tearing up when he sees the photos of poor little Moshe Holtzberg? When I see this sort of thing, all I can hope is that the beasts who do these things die in agony. And then weep again.

Pipeline
6-10 ft. - head high + to double overhead with occasional 12 ft. and good-epic conditions.
Epic offshore conditions with solid waves rolling in today. Get on it early because some giant surf is on the way. For now waves are in the solid head high to overhead range with some easy double overhead sets. Winds have shifted out of the south making for epic smooth and glassy conditions.

I'm crying again. When I'm with my kids, tucking them in, smelling their soft skin after their baths it's even worse. You know, my family has Holocaust survival and Palestinian terror affecting us personally and yet this-I'm just trying to stay composed. I keep getting the talks from my Dad about not letting them defeat us but I'm just so sad. I keep walking away from my desk but I keep seeing little Moishe's face and I just want to scoop him up and take him to my house and love him like one of my own. I'm losing it...

Fine, so we take action. Then what? We all know this sort of thing will keep happening, and happening, and happening, and, in the end, everybody will stand around feeling vaguely sad about it, but nothing will change.

As I grow older, I begin to think my grandfather wasn't paranoid, and that we have more enemies than we can ever imagine, and it's only because we don't see them and don't let ourselves think about them that we're able to get through the day.

In the breathless pursuit of appeasement, a new report calls for the US to directly engage in talks with Iran and for the US to encourage Palestinian unity.

Palestinians are already united. They want Israel wiped off the map and do not want a two-state solution. The difference between Hamas and Fatah is the timeframe for that goal.

Who was behind this half-baked pseduodiplomacy? The Saban Center, and includes comments by Richard N. Haass, president of the Council on Foreign Relations, and Martin Indyk, director of the Saban Center.

It is not out of the norm to actually call for a congressional committee to examine whether Islam can be considered a religion or a political theocracy.

Scientology has been challenged in a number of countries and legally banned. Jehovah's Witnesses have been banned legally in some countries.

In Scientology's case, it is because the organization is looked at as a multi-level marketing scheme and not a religion.

In the case of Jehovah's Witnesses, it is because of their refusal to support certain national activities (such as military service, swearing oaths, saluting a flag etc.).

So, it would not be impossible to consider looking at Islam in this country and making a legal decision as to it's status as a religion versus a political entity, a political entity with a desire to over take the governments of countries where it resides.

re: #65 WriterMom

Yes, totally.

My family was a direct beneficiary of the wonderful work of this group. Now, do not get all pissed off, but we had gone to some of the shuls in our area when we began to struggle when my dad lost his job- conservative and 2 reform. . .there was not a single open helping hand extended- one reform shul told us that in order to get help we should be members, otherwise, we should go to one of the mission groups for a daily meal.

We ended up at Chabad House, and for 3 months, they fed my family, all 8 of us, and asked for nothing in return save for help around the house and adherence of observance, which we did willingly and gladly. After my dad left the Corps, he was not able to make his way as well as he wanted- two tours in Vietnam took their toll- those at the Chabad House were mindful of his dignity, and also our struggle. They never judged us, and my life would have been so much different without their G-d sent love and concern.

Toward a Meaningful Life, by the Rebbe is one of the most life altering books I have ever read, and my resolve to help this group overcome this horrific crims and continue on is strong and my money is going right to them!

Since the Rebbe's death, I know there have been some internal conflicts. . .but that will never alter the acts of loving kindness that saved my family.

I personally would prefer discussing how we can all fight the evil, what we are going to do to fight the darkness. The Chabad call to action is for ACTION. It's the very least we can do.

Chabad, at least here in New York is holding memorial services for the Holtzbergs and the other victims on Saturday Night on the Westside and tonight on the Eastside of Manhattan

There is much wisdom in the old adage: "Talk softly, but carry a big stick"

There is no wisdom in this new one: "Talk alot and don't even have a stick"

Trying to figure out why my "Up Your Alley Fair" report still gets a constant massive stream of visitors five months after I posted it, I discovered why: it's now the third result on Google for the fair -- and the first, not counting the two results for the fair's own official Web page. (Results 3-5 are also links to my report.)

I've really started to learn just how powerful top Google placement really is.

In other news, Gathering of Eagles has just gotten permits for a real Victory in Iraq Day rally on the mall in Washington D.C., on April 4th, 2009. Order your t-shirts early!

Anyone in the D.C. area, mark your calendars for April 4!

Obama's win helped me to realize how much I love this country -- I truly hope he is successful in governing -- and that he quickly learns the errors of socialism (hopefully not through trial and error). I am pulling for him, though with highly guarded expectations.

True to a point. My problem, however, is that Obama in particular - and the democrats in general - won by demagogueing serious issues with foolish solutions.

You are suggesting that they all will have an faked epiphany and govern as conservatives. I highly doubt it, but even if that does happen that means that they came to power by selling lies. Do we really want such skilled liars as elected officials?

re: #75 WriterMom

Mandy-I just don't feel like myself. I keep having to take deep breaths and try to forget about it and then I see his face and I think about the Rabbi covering his wife with a tallis.

Deep breaths, it is your humanity that causes such empathy, do not worry about losing it- it is what keeps you strong.

The tenderness shown in that situation, yes, those acts of tenderness that would not be silenced, cuts to the core of our humanity, and is our greatest strength and weakness.

I will not go one about tests of will and resolve, you know all of that, from the knee like me, I am sure. We have to kep doing what we are doing, only more so, and we have to mourn- to forget is to make the memory worthless, it will Happen Again, if we do not continue to fight for Never Again- and this is part of it- embracing these evil acts, remembering them and honoring those killed by remembering them, and by helping those in danger-

Allow yourself to grieve, to mourn, and when ready, take up the fight once again. . .

So far, he appears to be Bill Clinton Jr. He might try to govern from the middle. The difference here is Clinton had a Republican congress to deal with (after 1994). Obama will be coming in with an almost veto-proof Senate and a nice majority in the House. If he so desires, he could pass through all sorts of garbage in his first two years. Maybe he is going to resist that and not listen to the foaming at the mouth psychos on his left. I hope he is actually concerned with the well being of the USA and not scoring points with the Looney Left.

But what will it take for the majority of the people to be willing to fight the good fight? You would think after 9-11 that would have done it, but it was short lived. I had read that one reason Marshall wanted to use the bomb was because he saw that America was starting to tire of the war, and as a democracy, it would be too difficult to keep the country engaged in doing what it took for the next two or three years to defeat Japan. So, it may be that the very things that give us strength in the end make us week. Freedom is blessed and expensive, but after a while, I guess many just want to sit back and enjoy it, no matter the long term costs of ignoring the obvious threats.

Nuclear Option: Franken Laying Predicate for Senate to Vote Him Into Office Even if He Loses the Vote?

Franken's behind by 340 and almost guaranteed to lose the recount. He's going to be behind by enough that even his demands that dubious absentee votes be counted won't save him.

A reader explains why the secretary of state's site shows Franken behind: Simply because the recount isn't finished yet, and many of the uncounted precincts went big for Coleman. So the current tally is not reflective of the likely final tally.

So is that it for Franken? No. The Senate can simply vote him into office if they so choose, and Franken's spurious arguments about "uncounted votes" may be an effort to give them the pretext to do just that.

In 1975 the Senate refused to certify the victory of a Republican who'd won in New Hampshire by two votes. Ultimately a compromise was reached -- a new election-- which the Democrat won.

The only thing that can prevent this is a filibuster... which may or may not be available to us, depending on today's vote in Georgia. And even a filibuster would only block the Democrats' attempts to seat Franken -- it would not get Coleman certified as the winner.

Similar: Powerline agrees Franken is lobbying Reid for just this scheme.

Another 171 Ballots Suddenly Discovered: Oy. They're from a swing district, so ought not to break heavily for Franken (Captain Ed guesses an 11 vote pickup based on district breakdown).

I'm less sanguine. I kinda assume all batches of "suddenly discovered uncounted ballots" will go heavily for Franken, because, um, they're filling them out in their basements this week.

Dear Lord, I pray that my fair city is not forever defined by the most licentious among us.

Well honestly, I rarely hear a comment about your city, from any political direction, from any flavor of people that doesn't stress the licentious nature of SanFran.

It's a hard reputation to shake. (no, that wasn't meant as a pun).

Sorry folks but I don’t know where else to post this. I spent 20 years in Naval Special Warfare (SWCC) and I still work for them as a civilian. I have been to over 40 countries and have seen a lot of bad things (and even more good). I have also (like most people in the US) had a steep learning curve in regards to Islam over the past few years but now something in me has broken. It was the picture of the 2 year old baby smuggled out of the Jewish center in Mumbai crying at his parents funereal. This was the breaking point, the straw that broke the camel’s back. Up until this time I could separate Islam from Muslims, the acts of terrorist from the average follower of this so called religion. I can’t do that anymore. I now know exactly what Thomas Mann was saying when he said “Tolerance becomes a crime when applied to evil”. My words can’t convey the depth of what I feel and this is a problem. I work at a military schoolhouse that has many students from Islamic lands. Whereas before I would steer away from discussions of Islam, now I want to confront them. I want to ask them how they can be apart of these horrific acts, and by declaring themselves believers I now feel they are a part of these acts. They will of course side step or say the usual deflecting comments but this will only enhance this feeling of anger (I don’t even know if you can call it that). I hate that I hate but that is what it has come to. Again sorry to dump on everyone here but I can’t very well express this at work and I don’t want to bring this hate into my home, so what to do?

Yes, part of grandfather's life was spent helping to blast those two off the map. And it was what he saw there that convinced him that this evil would be with us until the end.

Of course, we should be righteous, and strive to be what we were made to be - this would be true even if people did not seek our death. But people do seek our death - a lot of them, and they seek it very actively, indeed. Survival is our first priority - choose therefore life.

With all of this said, so we fight the beast at every level. In ourselves, a constant struggle; in others? I see no way, short of some sort of unimaginable blood-letting - again. Yes, I'm pessimistic, but not defeatist.

British Imam praises Mumbai terrorists, killing infidels...
TERROR COPS FEAR 'MUMBAI ATTACK' IN UK

RANTING Anjem Choudary launched an astonishing anti-British tirade as terror experts warned yesterday of a Mumbai-style massacre in Britain.

The hate preacher called for apartheid in the UK just days after backing the killers in India. And his supporters threatened to unleash “blood on the streets”.
...
Choudary, 41, spoke at a packed public meeting called “Not So Great Britain”.

It was held at a council-owned arts centre in Southall, Middlesex, by Islam4UK.com – a website he founded with banned hate preacher Omar Bakri Mohammad.

Filthy

He branded Britain “filthy”, accused children of being “prostitutes” and demanded non-Muslims wear signs like the Nazis forced on the Jews in WWII.

Crazed Choudary said: “In Britain there are 230 rapes every day, that’s 10 per hour. Supermarkets are selling poles for little children so they can become prostitutes when they grow up. There’s no comparison between our way of life and theirs.

“In an Islamic state, non-Muslims will have to wear a sign to show what they are – it should say Kaffir. We won’t discriminate on height, race or appearance but we will discriminate on faith.” Earlier, Bakri spoke via videophone from Lebanon.

Meanwhile, one of Choudary’s henchmen at Islam4UK, which has close links to banned group al-Muhajiroun, warned: “You will know when the Muslims have ignited an insurrection when there is blood on the streets of London and New York like there is blood on the streets of Fallujah and Mumbai.”

Fake, liberal Christians are making me ill today...

SEVENTH INTERNATIONAL SABEEL CONFERENCE
NAZARETH AND JERUSALEM
NOVEMBER 12-19, 2008

THE NAKBA: MEMORY, REALITY AND BEYOND

We are more than 200 Christians from five continents who have come together to commemorate the tragic events that occurred 60 years ago in the lives of the people of Palestine. While we have come to hear from and to offer our solidarity and support to the indigenous Palestinian community in both Palestine and Israel, we have also heard from brothers and sisters in the Muslim and Jewish communities as they too have borne witness to the injustices visited upon the Palestinian population of this land. They have seen more than 531 villages depopulated and destroyed, and the creation of more than 750,000 refugees who have not been allowed to return to their homes since 1948.

We recognize the irony in the coincidence that this year also marks the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The establishment of peace with justice requires that the full truth be told about the events of 1948 and the subsequent displacement of hundreds of thousands more Palestinian citizens in 1967, a process which has continued to the present day. The human rights of the Palestinian people continue to be crushed under a military occupation that dehumanizes both oppressed and oppressor. We share our conviction that it is only an acknowledgement of the full truth behind and within this current state of oppression that will lead to true freedom for all parties in the conflict.

Terrorism by it's very nature is cowardly. Hit unsuspecting innocent people and then slither off. I suspect that the Muslims you will confront about this will share in your anger. I am still convinced that the ones doing this sort of thing are the minority. However, I am still waiting for this "silent majority" of Muslims to rise up and say enough is enough. So far, it's nothing but silence and that bothers me as well. If we had a bunch of Christians going around doing this sort of thing all over the world, there would be a huge reaction from the Christian community and that sort of thing would be stamped out. It appears they endorse this sort of thing by the lack of reaction, doesn't it?

It is no wonder that you feel the way you do. I have waited 7 years now to hear Muslims public denounce the hate element in their religion from the "moderate" followers.

For whatever reasons, they have refused to do that in any meaningful way.

That leads me to only one conclusion at this time. I cannot trust any Muslim. I can be friendly to them, I can give them the benefit of the doubt for normal everyday interactions if I have to interact with them, but, I will not trust that person.

I don't wish death or destruction on any of them, unless they deserve it, but I will not cry if they are killed or hurt.

The ball is TOTALLY in their court. They have to prove to the rest of the world that they can live in peace with us. Until that time, otherwise, I will not consider them as a fellow traveller and I feel no compunction to extend any helping hand to them.

I don't want to see them mistreated unfairly, but I will not support any treatment that gives them special considerations in this world.

I dont think it matters what ethnic, racial or national group they are from, Romans 11 13-18 tells us plain and simple;

For I speak to you Gentiles (thats us non-Jews); inasmuch as I am an apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry, if by any means I may provoke to jealousy those who are my flesh and save some of them. For if their being cast away is the reconciling of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead?
For if the firstfruit is holy, the lump is also holy; and if the root is holy, so are the branches. And if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive tree, were grafted in among them, and with them became a partaker of the root and fatness of the olive tree, do not boast against the branches. But if you do boast, remember that you do not support the root, but the root supports you.

My rabbi's son, who had met one of the slain in Beijing during the Olympics, discussed the killings this past Shabbos in terms of the week's parsha. He pointed out that Isaac dug three wells, in the same place; the first two were causes of strife, and the third, not; the point being that the Philistines opposed him the first two times, then realized that even if they fought him over the well he was not going to go away--so in the end, they backed off.

Apparently they don't make philistines as smart as they used to.

What Mideast peace (and $Billions of US aid to Egypt) looks like:

Egypt's Grand Sheik Mohammed Sayed Tantawi, considered the most senior institutional religious authority in Egypt, announced Tuesday that he had shaken the hand of Israel's President, Shimon Peres, at a conference several weeks ago, because he did not recognize him and did not know who he was.

The handshake, which took place at a United Nations-hosted interfaith meeting in New York last month, sparked harsh criticism among the Egyptian opposition, who went as far as to demand Tantawi's resignation.

Tantawi condemned anyone who publicized the picture of him shaking hands with Peres, saying it had been a "group of lunatics."

Good. Maybe the terrorists will "inherit Gehenna" in the old-fashioned sense.

The Valley of Gehinnom (Gehenna) was the area used by the city of Jerusalem in ancient times as a garbage dump; it was the Fresh Kills of Jerusalem. Today, we take Gehenna as a synonym for Hell, i.e., an unpleasant rather than pleasant form of the afterlife, but originally when the text says that someone who would transgress would "inherit Gehenna," it meant in literal sense that one would not be entitled to decent burial, but would instead be tossed on the communal rubbish heap like garbage.

Interesting...thanks!

Thank you all. Its nice to know I’m not alone in this anger (or what ever the hell it is). I can tell you that the Muslims I have met here at the schoolhouse and overseas are filled with lies and half truths about the West, Christians, and 911, BUT that’s no excuse! There is no excuse for killing non-combatants. It is the constant attacking by Islam that I am fed up with. I was in Bangladesh and I befriended a Christian there. He told me how he had opened a grocery store with his life savings. He had to close after less then 6 month at a great loss because the Muslims would come to him and demand jizya or free food. If he refused they would lay a false accusation of insulting Islam on him. The police were no help; in fact they were in on it. He now is the night assistant manager for the hotel I stayed at in Chittagong. All this despite be college educated. His life will never be easy or even secure because of Islam. I have a million stories like this. That picture of the baby was the finial straw. I want to lash out but that won’t do anyone any good. At least at Blackwater I might get some of this out (again that won’t do anyone any good)

Not too many of them about these days, near as I can tell. A testament, perhaps, to his success, that those who really listened, made the move.

Why we didn't was explained like this: We didn't go through what we went through, our men didn't fight in two World Wars, to pack up and let ourselves be surrounded on all sides by our enemies. This is the golden land for us; we will move back when we are called.

My dad was very patriotic and felt paternal to Israel- he was not ever going to make aalliya but he loved Israel and felt it was important to be there, at that spot, not in Uganda or any place else. .

Miss that man so much, my dad

True to a point. My problem, however, is that Obama in particular - and the democrats in general - won by demagogueing serious issues with foolish solutions.

You are suggesting that they all will have an faked epiphany and govern as conservatives. I highly doubt it, but even if that does happen that means that they came to power by selling lies. Do we really want such skilled liars as elected officials?

I agree with you too. I'm not suggesting that they will govern as conservatives or libertarians. I prefer a pragmatist to a leftist ideologue and I'm hoping Obama is a of the weak pragmatist variety (and there is reason for optimism in this regard).

I also believe that the American dream of growing prosperity and freedom exists always in spite of government, not because of it. My hope (not my faith or even expectations) in an Obama administration is that they are not going to veer too far down socialist lane and America's footing here and abroad is still firm four years from now.

Since we're starting with Christmas Carols, such as DaddyG's in message #310, how about a Christmas story?

It seems a few years back, testing some English language software, the programmers put the story "'Twas The Night Before Christmas" into the program as input. The computer program did, as it was created to do, broke all the words down into their component sounds successfully.

Out of curiosity, they ask the program to reassemble the sounds (in the same order) back into words, figuring they'd get something close to the original poem. The computer then output the words you see below.

If you read this out loud, you'll see it sounds almost exactly like "'Twas The Night Before Christmas", even though it looks nothing like it on paper. For example, "Tweeze denied beef worker isthmus" comes out as "'Twas The Night Before Christmas" when said out loud:

Don't know about that, but it is not something that matters. She may have been a housekeeper or just a general helper. Blessed be the peace makers for they will be called the children of G_d.

Of course revenge is no answer. That's what makes it so awful, and that's what makes one want it all the more: the fact that revenge does no good makes it all the more necessary to take revenge.

Heard a fellow, WWII vet, talk about fighting the Japanese. Said he hated them, hated them passionately. Why did he hate them? Because they made him have to fight them, and because he had to fight them, he had to kill them, and he hated anyone who would force him to kill. And so he fought them ruthlessly, hating as only a fundamentally decent man can hate.

Same thing with revenge. Precisely because it is futile, and yet the only outlet available, it is to be hated, and yet it is necessary.

Genocide? I don't think it will come to that. If it does, it will be on my people, anyway, not on theirs.

True, but even when that isn't enough, we get the magical "found ballots" that all go for the Dem candidate, like we see now in Minnesota, and what we saw in Washington state in 2004.

Shred all unused ballots at the close of the polls. Audit the number of ballots distributed so that every last one is accounted for. Print a serial number on them is we need to. Enough with this blatant fraud.

re: #390 Spiny Norman

True, but even when that isn't enough, we get the magical "found ballots" that all go for the Dem candidate, like we see now in Minnesota, and what we saw in Washington state in 2004.

Shred all unused ballots at the close of the polls. Audit the number of ballots distributed so that every last one is accounted for. Print a serial number on them is we need to. Enough with this blatant fraud.

Ssh. Such sense will prevent Democrats from winning.

See, that's what I mean - we can console ourselves with thoughts of denying them the pleasures of their after-life by thwarting the magic of their twisted thinking, but, in the end, by the rules of their own game, they won. If they were to have fallen off the side of the boat on their way in, they'd have won, too. Burying them or not makes no difference

Just in case anyone wanted to know the type of people who attend Chabad, and what Judaism is about, this is what abbi Moshe Kotlarsky, director of Chabad’s Jewish outreach worldwide said at the funeral for the murdered couple.

These folk are some of the most deeply decent people I know; my family, none of us were so pious as this, so noble as this, so human as this, but we at least had the courage to admit they were better people than we were, and we admired them.

Of course, all that is negated by the fact that they were Jews; their enemies hated them for it, and the press and news agencies hold them in disdain. They were Israelis, after all, so even if there was evidence conclusively demonstrating that they had not cut down an Arab's olive trees on their way to shooting unarmed children at a checkpoint intended to keep fuel and food out of a refugee camp for blind, crippled widows and other victimized Arabs, they'd still be guilty.

GA SENATE VOTE Update:

I vote in a downtown Atlanta (Fulton Co.) precinct that is one of the most heavily Democrat areas of this fine state and I would like to report that on Election day I had a 1.5 hr wait in line with some hard-core, voting Democrats. The line was 2.5 hrs long at its height on that day at that polling station.

I voted at the same time today as I did then (roughly 9am).

No one was there except the poll workers.

I asked if there was a morning rush? She replied: "You're ARE the morning rush."

I'm not going to predict a Martin (D) win today in Georgia.

Great! I hope Cham wins big. If he does it will just be another example that the large dem turnout was for all the obvious reasons in the general. Many who turned out to vote were only doing it for "The Obama Factor" ...there has to be a way to stop the dems and I pray Cham and Coleman are it ...wish I could have voted in Georgia today ...
