False Positive YouTube Virus Warning?

Science | Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 5:45:31 pm PST

We’ve received several emails today about a PC antivirus program complaining about a virus called “Actns/Swif.T” when LGF was loaded. This warning message seems to be related to the embedded YouTube videos, and CrunchGear says it’s a false positive.

UPDATE: Spoke with Google/YouTube and apparently anti-spyware software from Computer Associates had been returning false positives, identifying certain files contained within YouTube embed codes as malware. The specific YouTube issue is apparently being corrected by Computer Associates and wasn’t actually harmful in the first place. If you’ve got CA software, you might want to check for any updates.

Wow, Computer Associates, that's a blast out of the past. I didn't even know they were still in business.

These guys ruined a xbase programming platform called Clipper (which was my primary programing platform in the 80's) when they purchased the product and turned it into Visual Clipper.

No Clipper programmer could even figure out how the new product related to the old product. It was like a horse of a different color. totally killed the whole platform.

Microsoft picked up the ball with Visual Foxpro, and other xbase platform, thank goodness. Kept me in business for another 5 years until I switched to Oracle.

Computer Associates, A1 assholes.

For a guy like me, reading this stuff is great - it's like finding a piece of polemic written during the heat of some obscure political dispute in some Central European nation that ceased to exist ca. WWI. There's something intensely interesting about the passion that can be stirred up by things most people have never heard of.

Charles, I've had this happen all day when I open LGF and my own homepage using IE on my work laptop. When opened them using Firefox within another application they were fine.

Since I have a happy handy help desk at my disposal they scoured everything for me and said there was no danger.

OT: The media is beginning to unload on Obama:

On Monday’s “No Bias, No Bull” program, CNN’s Campbell Brown lashed out at President-Elect Barack Obama for his flippant response to a reporter’s question: “Mr. President-Elect, reporters, we hope, are going to ask you a lot of annoying questions over the next four years. Get used to it. That is the job of the media, to hold you accountable. But this isn’t just about the media. It’s about the American people, many of whom voted for you because of what you said during the campaign, and they have a right to know which of those things you meant and which you didn’t. Apparently, as you made clear today, you didn't mean what you said about Hillary Clinton. So, what else didn’t you mean?”

All I'm saying is that these sort of things, when they come up, reveal a rich world the very existence of which I had not suspected. The odious use of YouTube by Islamist propagandists is finally getting some mainstream attention. Hopefully some pressure will be brought to bear on YouTube's editorial management, though Reuters reports that "YouTube, a unit of Google Inc., could not immediately be reached for comment..."

"Islamic extremists being coaxed toward YouTube"
[Link: www.reuters.com...]

WASHINGTON, Dec 2 (Reuters) - Islamic extremists are being instructed on how to use the popular video-sharing site YouTube as a way to disseminate propaganda videos, a U.S.-based terrorism monitor said on Tuesday.

Militants are being encouraged to use the online site through postings on other Islamic forums on the Internet, according to the SITE Intelligence Group.

Last week, an extremist authored step-by-step instructions on posting video to YouTube, which he described as "one of the most famous and biggest international sites that publish sections of videos from all over the world."

The posting encourages readers to post scenes of Western forces coming under attack to, it says, "shame the Crusaders by publishing clips of videos showing their losses, which they hid for a long time."

Islamic extremists have long used the Internet as a tool to communicate with supporters and distribute propaganda but the latest posting specifically coaxes militants towards YouTube and touts it as a user-friendly tool.

"I say that the YouTube site is one of the easiest sites to record and upload the clips," the posting states, pointing readers to the software they might need to publish on the Internet.

"I ask you, by Allah, as soon as you read this subject, to start recording on YouTube, and to start cutting and uploading and posting clips on the jihadist, Islamic, and general forums," the posting states.

YouTube, a unit of Google Inc. (GOOG.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), could not immediately be reached for comment on how it might respond to the types of postings described in the message.

The message author calls for a "YouTube Invasion" by militants and includes several screenshots showing step by step instructions on how to create a YouTube account and to upload material.

The video-sharing site has often been a chosen venue for users to post controversial clips and other material.

In March, Pakistani authorities ordered Internet service providers to block the website after it ran material deemed insulting to Islam.

We use CA software in my office to remote to PC's and for virus protection. The RC software is good when it works. The number of running processes it takes to keep the whole package running is often rather taxing on my system. I regularly have to wait for my HD to stop thrashing around before I can do anything without it hanging while some background process is running.

It's no surprise to me that their virus protection somehow thinks streaming video is a virus threat.

Charles, since this is a tech related thread.

One of the features of your site I like best is the top rated links. Any thoughts on something that does inbound links with click count? I think it might be interesting to see who is linking to LGF and how many people those links bring to you.

78 Dasher  Tue, Dec 2, 2008 7:45:29pm

A five or six years ago at work had a similar incident with PKZIP. Norton Anti-Virus software was tagging everything ZIPed with PKZIP as having a virus. Unfortunately I was the PKZIP user, and our IT dept went bananas. Took a day for Norton to figure it out, and they sent out an update the next day, but meanwhile a bunch of files were pulled from our servers, and some customers who had downloaded the files were also getting the virus notifications. Those false positives can create havoc.

cool youtube trick

[Link: www.lockergnome.com...]

this link tells how to link to a youtube video to jump to a specific time

it is a bit confusing but basically

just append

#t=1m45s

to the you tube link if you want to jump to the 1 minute and 45 second point in the video

so

instead of having to watch the whole britany spears video

here (note spaces added for full link display)
